Familiarize yourself with brand touchpointsThe touchpoints of your brand are the places where clients will come into contact with you. These include your:

  • Service
  • Website
  • Employees and client service
  • Marketing
  • Social media channels
  • Word of mouth

These are just some of the areas that will help clients decide whether or not they relate to your brand. When revisiting your strategy to improve your brand, your first port of call should be checking in on these touchpoints.

Sam Carvalho

Evaluate how well your touchpoints are working. Make sure they’re perfectly aligned and cohesive so anyone would understand who your brand is from interacting with just one of the touchpoints.

Remember that each touch point is a chance to build loyalty with your clients.

Check your values

Values are one of the main factors that help clients decide whether or not a brand is a right fit for them. Whether those values are sustainability, quality, expertise, or something else entirely, you know it’s what makes your brand stand out to your target audience.

Sam Carvalho

Make sure all the messaging and communications on your website, socials, and other marketing materials are completely in line with your brand’s values.

Take a look at your brand guidelines and align them with the image you want to present to the world, and consider new ways for your values to filter through everything you do.

Your client should understand how your values apply to your services, and therefore, fulfill their needs.

Define your niche

When you started your business, you probably spent a lot of time looking at competitors and carving out your own niche that filled gaps they weren’t hitting. But, over time, all brands adapt and change to client needs, which is why you’ll need to stay on top of whether or not your niche really is still a niche.

Sam Carvalho

Keeping your market narrow, appealing to a specific demographic, and finding ways to fit their needs, is the best way to keep your brand refined.

Look at what your client needs now and ask yourself, “Am I still serving them, or could I be doing better?”

Align your brandFor help in aligning your brand, seek outside perspectives.

It can be difficult to truly understand how your brand appears to outside viewpoints without asking, so speak to stakeholders, employees, and clients to get their opinions.

If all of them have a different idea of what your brand is about, then your alignment needs some work.

Reconnect with your client

There are probably social platforms and networks that didn’t even exist when you launched your brand and created your marketing plan, so, as you seek to improve your brand, you should also be looking to improve your awareness of your client’s habits.

Sam Carvalho

Insights into different channels can help you understand how your followers are using different platforms. Then, you can appeal to the different algorithms of the various channels your clients use the most.

Set up your deviceWhen it comes to securing a good relationship with clients, your client service is one of the most important factors.

Negative experiences are more likely to inspire reviews than positive ones. Therefore, if your client service isn’t on point, your clients will remember and will be likely to share their bad experiences with their friends and family.

Up your aestheticFrom logos to brand colors to slogans, brands are always updating how they look.

Though this goes against the first marketing lesson of making your brand instantly recognizable, once your original brand is well established enough, your clients will have no trouble adapting to your new look.

Embrace social media

If you set your social media strategy last year, there are probably at least two new features on every channel that you use by now. Do you know how to use them to your advantage?

Sam Carvalho

With social media users taking to new features almost as soon as they’re released, there’s no excuse for brands to be seen lagging.

But, with that said, don’t force anything that doesn’t feel authentic to you and your brand. Gen Z TikTok isn’t the place for everyone after all!

In This Podcast* Apply grid systems * Layer it up * Back to basics * Play with borders * Use a pattern * Invert it * Brand consistency * Change directions * Basic graphics go a long way * Use high-quality images

Apply grid systems

Whether you are designing one or hundreds of pages, a grid system is essential in developing a layout. Grids can help you position text and images so that the page will look polished and clean.

Sam Carvalho

The structure is made up of intersecting horizontal and vertical lines.

If you want to add complexity to your page, try adding angular or curved lines. There are no strict rules as to what is and what isn’t a grid: that’s the beauty of design.

As a designer, you can create your own grid. As long as you follow it throughout a project, you will create clean pages.

Sam Carvalho

Layer it up

Print design has come a long way and, with the help of grids, we’ve started creating multi-layered layouts. This includes images over colored backgrounds, type-over images, graphics over type, and so on.

Sam Carvalho

If you happen to be working with heavy content, check if it’s legible, because it all comes down to legibility. So, if the copy is difficult to read, you might try choosing a lighter background for example.

  • Type-over imagery is one of the easiest ways to apply multiple layers.
  • Make sure the colors on the content and the colors of the image aren’t mixing to the point of illegibility.
  • Does it make sense for the medium you are working in?

Back to basics

Minimalism never goes out of style. You can’t go wrong with crisp, clean, and organized.

Sam Carvalho

Create visual harmony with a few elements, select high-quality fonts and images, a muted color palette, and a basic grid.

Minimalism can seem stark due to the lack of color, but use the content and images as elements to add contrast. You can also use a mix of different font sizes to add visual interest to the page without creating clutter.

Play with borders This decorative element on the paper’s edge is not just an adornment – it can help reinforce the theme of your project by stylizing it.

Borders can help frame the page and create a strong delivery.

Borders can also be colorful and help unify the theme of the design by complementing it. However, if it becomes too crowded, try using fewer colors and a simpler design.

Sam Carvalho

Use a patternPatterns are extremely versatile and perfect for filling up empty space because they are flexible, functional, and visually effective.

For example, including a pattern on the back of a business card is a discreet way to add something special.

Invert itColors evoke different feelings in design.

While we see logos and printed materials in many different colors, black still holds strong. Black translates into high-end, luxury, and elegance. This mysterious color is the new white canvas.

Sam Carvalho

Paired with other colors, black brings out a contrast that isn’t comparable to white. The play of light and dark lends a sharp contrast to the page.

Brand consistencyA professionally designed brand identity needs to be visually attractive and fresh. Aside from marketing, clients will be looking at your branding to make sure you have a credible company.

In case you’re wondering, an identity package essentially consists of business cards, letterheads, invoices, envelopes, and creative folders. These elements need to work together cohesively … if you’re applying a pattern to a business card, this needs to extend to the rest of the stationary as well.

Sam Carvalho

This graphic translation will help you create a quality brand that will stand out from the crowd.

Change directionsThere are many ways to add emphasis and movement to your project.

Colors and shapes are a couple, and rotating text from horizontal to vertical is a different way of adding movement and direction to your design.

Basic graphics go a long wayWant to spice up your minimalist layout? Use basic graphics that vary in size and color. They will add visual weight and help with direction by emphasizing content.

Consider: if you open a brochure and are not quite sure what to read first and how to follow the content, you usually lean on the graphics included to help guide you.

Use high-quality imagesUsing full-page, bleed-to-bleed images creates a major impact.

You need to find high-quality images that you can enlarge to a full page because if you use low-quality images stretched over the page, it will result in pixelation which is a bad reflection on your brand.

In This Podcast* Limit your typefaces * Don’t be afraid of scale * Respect the space of other elements * Use a small color scheme * Create clean, crisp, clear imagery * Use fonts to help inform the mood of your design * Create order with alignment * Keep your designs simple * Use hierarchy to order your content * Keep your font in the same family * Use white space * Contrast is key

Limit your typefacesWhen selecting a typeface or font for headings, subtitles, or body text, be sure to use easy-to-read fonts to create a simple and effective design.

Remember that the eye finds it hard to scan multiple typefaces, so try to stick to a simple collection of fonts.

Sam Carvalho

Don’t be afraid of scaleTo acquire the appropriate emphasis, you can apply scale to:

  • type
  • shapes
  • compositional features

Additionally, use appropriate colors to enhance this technique while making sure to use suitable typefaces that look good when increased in size.

Sam’s design tip: sans serifs fonts are great for this

Respect the space of other elementsUse letter spacing to fill dead space, align text, or condense words that take up too much space.

However, be careful not to reduce letter spacing so much that it can’t be read, or increase it so much that the letters become detached from one another.

Sam Carvalho

Use a small color schemeChoose a color scheme that has one to three primary colors and an additional one to three secondary colors that contrast and complement each other.

Try using different tones of the same color for consistency by adjusting the brightness for contrast.

Sam’s design tip: Keep in mind that finer typefaces will need stronger distinction against a color’s background.

Create clean, crisp, clear imageryPump up the contrast by adjusting the brightness of the background image so that it offsets the text color, making the design clear and easy to read.

This is a great way to apply white or black text over an image to create a strong ‘cut-out’ effect.

Sam Carvalho

Use fonts to help inform the mood of your designChoose a typeface that sings the song of your content.

For example, typefaces with rounded edges usually give off a friendlier note, while hard-edged, geometric fonts are more solid and strong.

Alternatively, serifs can convey an elegant and sophisticated look.

Create order with alignmentApply a line or an embellishment to a design for balance and composition.

Use horizontal and vertical lines to correspond with other design elements.

In a multi-page document, keep this alignment consistent across all pages to create a cohesive overall design.

Keep your designs simple

Keep [your design] simple, but don’t forget your basics. Make sure every element has a reason to be in the design and keep the number of fonts, colors, shapes, and frames to a minimum.

Sam Carvalho

Use contrasting tonal color combinations so that your text is sharp and easy to read. Apply a solid frame containing your to enhance the compositional structure of a design.

Use hierarchy to order your content

The most visually dominant feature in a design should be the most important part of the message.

Sam Carvalho

Apply color or scale to a graphic to see how it changes the hierarchy of elements and what grabs attention first.

Keep your font in the same familyCreate visual uniformity by applying one typeface or font family to the text. Use a typeface or font family that has a selection of variants, such as italic, bold, and condensed, to keep options open.

Use white spaceCreate a fluid design by surrounding words with white space to let elements breathe. The application of space around text boxes, images, and other graphic elements makes a design easier to read and reduces visual clutter.

Contrast is keyContrast is one of the most imperative parts of the design for mood, legibility, and to make it stand out:

  • Use a contrasting color palette background, fonts, and graphics.
  • Use photo filters to enhance the positive/negative space in an image
  • Apply black or white copy to create optimum contrast against a background image

A good rule of thumb is if you have a light-colored background, then you should use a dark font and vice versa.

In This Podcast* Start with a great brand story * Use logo guidelines to create a recognizable brand signature * Include your brand’s core color palette * Choose typography that matches your visual style * Find your brand voice * Include image and data visualization guidelines

Start with a great brand story

A brand story defines and describes the things that a company cares about the most. It’s used to communicate a company’s values to the public, and can also help guide major decision-making within an organization.

Sam Carvalho

Brand stories wrap up a company’s vision, mission, and core values in one package, so the brand story should always come first in the brand style guide.

If you’re feeling stuck, feel free to Google some brand stories for inspiration. Trello, Skype, and Facebook all have great ones!

Use logo guidelines to create a recognizable brand signatureBrand story aside, your logo is the most important part of your brand.

It’s the one thing that everyone should immediately recognize as belonging to you, and only you. To make your logo instantly recognizable, it has to be used consistently.

All of the top brand style guides outline rules for exactly how to use their logos, to make sure nobody sends the wrong message with their brand. That even includes specifications on how much space to leave around logos, acceptable color variations of the logo, as well as minimum logo sizes.

Sam Carvalho

Include your brand’s core color paletteTo keep brand recognition intact, it’s important to make core brand colors consistent.

In your brand style guide, clearly define your brand’s color palette. This usually includes one primary color and some secondary shades.

Include the necessary hex codes, RGB values, and CMYK color codes to make sure your colors are presented consistently across all media.

Choose typography that matches your visual style

Typography is one of those things that go unnoticed if it’s done well but sticks out like a sore thumb if it’s not. Allowing font choices to slip under your radar can cheapen your brand.

Sam Carvalho

For consistent typography, outline which fonts are used for what purposes – in print and on the web – in your brand style guide.

You can even design a hierarchy of font styles and sizes, text colors, and styles for lists and paragraphs. Or, just focus on your most used fonts which are usually not more than one or two.

Find your brand voiceSpend time finding the style that resonates with your audience and aligns with the personality of your brand.

Once you have it figured out, ensure it’s replicated across your channels by spelling it out in your brand style guide.

Sam Carvalho

Do this by including a writing sample (or two) that heroes your company’s brand voice.

Include image and data visualization guidelinesEverything about your imagery, including style, color, and content, contributes to the perception of your brand.

Therefore, it’s important to create some guidelines for imagery like photos, illustrations, charts, infographics, and so forth to include in your brand style guide. Include where to position them and for which purposes they are used in your messaging.

Photographic style is as important as illustrative style. If you use photographs frequently in your branding, your style guide should specify the level of complexity, compositions, color schemes, and technical specs that make photographs fit within your brand.

Sam Carvalho

Additionally, if your branding features infographics or data visualizations, include some stylistic guidelines for them as well. Specify when and where to use infographics and data visualizations and include style preferences and technical conventions.

These sorts of guidelines are easy to overlook, but when used properly, go a long way toward fostering a cohesive brand presence.

In This Podcast* A picture paints a thousand words * Use empty space to keep your logo space clean * Use shapes to think outside of the box * Imagine your logo in use * Color is the key to good logo design * Be literal with your logo * Be authoritative with your logo * Create visual salience with a pop of color * Don’t reinvent the wheel * Don’t be afraid to rejig the wheel

A picture paints a thousand words

A logo is a visual representation of your brand, so why tell people what you do if you can just show them?

Sam Carvalho

Use simple icons to communicate who you are. Hire a professional to design your logo because it can make all the difference to get creative as opposed to going with the obvious choice.

Use empty space to keep your logo space cleanYou want to make sure that people can read your logo from a distance, or when it’s small, and including blank space will help achieve this.

At times, you could even find a really great font, increase the spacing between the letters, and you have yourself a minimalistic, sophisticated logo.

Sam Carvalho

Using blank space in your design makes your logo easier to integrate seamlessly into different designs and formats.

Use shapes to think outside of the boxShapes are a great way to make your logo stand out. Consider using a simple square around your logo, which also works well with other designs and formats that your logo may appear in.

If you want to explore further, you could look into including gradients or textures which can push your design to the next level.

Imagine your logo in useWhen designing your logo, make sure you think about its intended uses:

  • Are you looking to use it on a uniform?
  • Is it going to be printed on flyers?
  • Will it just be for your website?

You can always use a Mock Up Generator to see how your logo will look in use.

It’s also good to think about how you’re going to promote yourself when creating a logo. If you’re going to be doing a lot of networking … create a logo that will look good on business cards.

Sam Carvalho

Color is the key to good logo designUse various shades of the same color to create subtle contrasts within your logo, instead of always opting for black and white.

Consider the PayPal logo, as they have used different shades of blue to create elements of contrast, but have still maintained a simple, powerful design.

Be literal with your logoIf your name is an object, include that object in your logo design.

Don’t be afraid to lean into the obvious. There’s a reason that Apple’s logo is, well, an apple. It’s simple, it’s obvious, but it’s one of the most renowned logo designs in the world.

Sam Carvalho

Be authoritative with your logoBe literal while making sure it fits your organization.

Ask yourself: If I saw this logo for the first time, would I trust this company?

Keep in mind that a font can go a long way to helping you create the right logo.

Serif fonts help to create a more classic, professional feel.

Create visual salience with a pop of colorWhile it’s recommended to first design a logo in black and add color last, it is without a doubt the color that adds the finishing touch and brings the design to life.

This is called visual salience.

Salience is a quality that makes an object stand out against its surroundings. One easy way to do this is with a pop of color.

Sam Carvalho

Don’t reinvent the wheelIf it feels right, then go ahead and use it.

Have a look at your competitors and see what their logos look like. Are there any common themes or colors?

Take note of this, but be sure not to directly copy anybody else’s design.

Don’t be afraid to rejig the wheelTransformation is necessary but gradual. Build your design over time on your established brand, so don’t trade the old for the new, and rather redesign the old.

Be bold and try new things.Use patterns, overlapping shapes, and contrasting colors to create a modern logo while remembering that modernization doesn’t have to be outright to work.

Meet clients where they are at If your ideal clients are currently at a critical point in their lives, or if they’re experiencing a high-stress situation, or they are having some kind of episodic issue, you would treat them differently at that moment.

You would meet them with whatever language [or] whatever tone they require at that moment because your goal is to help them.

Mark Drager

Bring the awareness and sensitivity that you share with clients in session online into your marketing because that is how you show new clients that you understand them.

The formula for creating an unstoppable brandThese are Mark’s best tips:

1 – Start with you: who are you? What are your experiences, apart from what you studied? What are your goals?

2 – Who are you speaking to? They can be your customers, your clients, or your audience.

When [you’re] generic in what you say, then there’s no flavor, there’s no personality, there’s no hook. There’s nothing to draw people in.

Mark Drager

Give people first what they want before you offer them what they need because you need to show them that you understand where they are at right now.

3 – What is your competition, or what is distracting your targets from your message?

You need to control how you look (your credibility), what you say (your message), and how you can make people feel. This is what will set you apart from the other businesses in your niche.

Your competition is not just the competition. Your competition is probably the status quo maybe, right?

Mark Drager

At the center of these three pieces is your unique brand.

Mark’s advice to private practitionersYou must communicate and market effectively as a business owner.

His current company, Fusion Photography, is an international photo, video, and content creation studio, based in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In This Podcast* What is digital storytelling? * Deevo’s tips on improving your branding * Bootstrap strategies * Using your intuition in marketing * How to get comfortable with video * Deevo’s advice to private practitioners

What is digital storytelling? The heart of humanity lies in telling stories to share wisdom, and experience, and to make ourselves understood and be seen by one another.

Digital storytelling and digital marketing go hand-in-hand … it’s how brands tell their stories so that you’ll buy their products.

Deevo

Deevo’s tips on improving your branding* What is the problem that you are solving? * What is the value that you are bringing as the solution to the problem? * How can you characterize the story of how you solve the problem into a story that resonates with your ideal clients?

What does your brand represent? Once you’re clear on that, then strategically set out to tell stories about [your] brand so that you can connect with your ideal buyer.

Deevo

  • Speak exclusively to your ideal clients

Bootstrap strategiesBusiness can be expensive, so it’s a good idea to try to save some cash where you can to put it forward where it will matter the most.

What I would initially suggest is to make sure that you have some sort of a problem-solving mechanism in place where you can make revenue doing that.

Deevo

One tip is to not quit your day job until you know where your side hustle is going (mostly) and it’s strong enough to support you until it starts to take shape into your main business.

Next is to build relationships and network! Give people value and a bite to use your services and then refer you back out to paying customers. You’re not necessarily giving freebies, but you are getting your name into the circles.

Using your intuition in marketing

You have to be able to meet people where they are, and [a] part of that is being intuitive and reading the room.

Deevo

Your intuition in business can be hugely helpful when you use it to meet your clients where they are and to make adjustments accordingly.

Be curious, be open, and let your intuition guide you in how to best connect with your ideal clients as opposed to treating everyone the same way.

How to get comfortable with video* Be purposeful with what you want to talk about * Practice talking in front of the mirror or with a recorder to get used to hearing your voice * Get accustomed to documenting instead of feeling like you always have to create

[If you’re] documenting stuff, you habitually become more comfortable doing it and more comfortable with hearing [and] seeing yourself as opposed to setting up all the cameras … if you’re putting too much into the context of it, the delivery can be a little overwhelming for you. Deevo

Deevo’s advice to private practitionersIt’s okay to make mistakes. There will always be an opportunity to climb a second mountain, so don’t worry if you need to start over. This is your life, and you get to decide how it turns out!

In This Podcast* How to have a healthy media mix * Work on visibility to get in front of new leads * Try these ideas to get free exposure * The ABCs of visibility and exposure * Lisa’s advice to private practitioners

How to have a healthy media mix

What healthy media mix is about is thinking about where [your] clients are paying attention and how they are consuming information.

Lisa Simone Richards

Where do you consume media? How frequently do you go to those digital places, and what catches your eye each time you go onto those platforms?

Ask yourself these questions as well, because your clients are also everyday people, just like you!

People have preferred ways of interacting with content, such as reading it, listening to it, or watching it.

It’s important as a business owner that you’re showing up in all three ways … written content, audio content, and video content so that no matter how your ideal client likes to consume information, you’re showing up in that way.

Lisa Simone Richards

Work on visibility to get in front of new leadsMany people market to the same followers over and over again, which can be helpful to build a relationship, but you also do need to be bringing in new clients and customers.

What I want [business owners] to do is to reach new people. So how can you maybe, instead of writing a blog post for your own site for example, can you write a guest blog post for somebody else’s site?

Lisa Simone Richards

Some ideas include:

  • Submitting articles and blog posts on new media outlets and publications
  • Being a guest on a podcast
  • Going live with a fellow practitioner on their site

Try these ideas to get free exposure

As you’re listening to this list, think to yourself; “Where do my strengths lie, what am I good at, and where am I comfortable?” … Get started there and then you can grow to other platforms.

Lisa Simone Richards

1 – Written content: a guest blog posts, write for another site, or be interviewed

2 – Audio content: being a podcast guest, joining a Clubhouse event, getting a shift on your local radio station

3 – Video content: get on a morning show in your local city, go live on somebody else’s Facebook or Instagram pages, go live on LinkedIn

The ABCs of visibility and exposure

When it comes to visibility and publicity, the first thing I want to know from a client is what is the purpose of getting visibility? … is there a business decision behind why you’re doing this?

Lisa Simone Richards

A: Awareness

  • Get in front of people that have the potential and power of hiring you

B: Buzz

  • Build multiple touchpoints to encourage people to take action

C: Credibility

  • Establish yourself by having your name come up with the peers that you admire and look up to

Lisa’s advice to private practitionersPick the thing that lands with you and take action with it!

In This Podcast* Common fears for entrepreneurial women * Get clear on your fear * Get clear on your brilliance * Ryane’s advice to private practitioners

Common fears for entrepreneurial women

We’re not taught about our nervous system, so we’re not in tune with them, and yet they run the show.

Ryane LeCesne

Human beings are instinctually fear-based, and to overcome those instincts, we need to learn how to work with our nervous systems which control our subconscious response to stimuli around us.

If we’re not mindful enough, and wedded enough to that goal, it’s very easy to close the laptop and say, “I’m going to do this tomorrow”.

Ryane LeCesne

Putting things off to the next day is not necessarily “easy”, but it is “easily painful”, which jump-starts our nervous system to try to run away from it.

Get clear on your fearSitting in your fear is scary and overwhelming, so one of the first things to do as an entrepreneur is to get clear on what the fear that you are experiencing is about because you are then better equipped to help yourself through it.

What is the fear about? What’s happening? What’s the fear saying? Because those words are the sweet nothings that your mind is telling you that you need to hear.

Ryane LeCesne

What your mind tells you about why you shouldn’t do something, or why you should put it off, can give you clues as to where you may need to spend some conscious time healing your thoughts and beliefs.

Get clear on your brillianceWhat is it that you do that you love, that helps or supports other people, and that brings you excitement to work on and do?

Can you build confidence in yourself and be your best friend and supporter – as well as surrounding yourself with people that also support you?

Being a woman and an entrepreneur brings unique challenges because women experience slightly different aspects of life than men do.

If we have a life of socialization where we’re taught to feel like impostors, we’re now bringing that mindset into our business. We don’t just “voila” change because we have the title of “entrepreneur” … those are breeding grounds for impostor syndrome and perfectionism.

Ryane LeCesne

Your confidence and sense of brilliance can carry you through the uncertainties, so get clear on them and hold them close, because they will support you as you overcome impostor syndrome.

Ryane’s advice to private practitionersYou are not alone, and you have support. Find a coach, and invest in yourself and your business by seeking and accepting help.
