Following Jesus doesn’t happen accidentally. In 2 Timothy 2:1–7, Pastor Amber Hicks looks at Paul’s pictures of a soldier, an athlete, and a farmer to show us how to resist spiritual drift—removing distractions, practicing the way of Jesus, and cultivating habits that produce fruit over time. And underneath it all is grace: we aren’t working to earn God’s love; His grace strengthens us to become more like Jesus.

What happens when following Jesus feels awkward, unpopular, or costly? In this message from 2 Timothy 1:3–10, Pastor Amber Hicks explores Paul’s call not to be ashamed of Jesus, the courage the Holy Spirit gives us, and why the cross—once a symbol of shame—has become the greatest sign of grace and victory. Through everyday examples, we are challenged to stop shrinking back and joyfully identify with the Savior who conquered death.

What does Jesus have to do with our finances? In this message, Dave Nelson teaches from 1 Timothy 6 and 1 Chronicles 29, showing us that our money belongs to God, comes from God, and becomes a place where we can experience the life of Jesus. When Christ becomes Lord of our finances, our hearts are set free, others are blessed, and God is glorified.

What does greatness look like in the kingdom of God? In this message, Dave Nelson teaches from John 13 and shows us that Jesus did not come to be served, but to serve. If eternal life is knowing Jesus, then following Jesus means receiving his love, trusting his power, and joining him in a life of humble, practical service.

What is eternal life? Jesus defines it in John 17: eternal life is knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom he has sent. In this message, Dave Nelson helps us see that following Jesus is more than knowing about God, attending church, or trying harder. It is receiving Jesus, letting him into every part of our lives, and following him into his life.

In Luke 7, Jesus is invited to dinner by Simon the Pharisee when an uninvited woman enters the room in tears. Simon sees her shame. Jesus sees her faith. In this message from The Front Church, Nate Ray explores our “How did I get here?” moments, the human tendency to mess things up, and the difference between shame-based change and the forgiveness Jesus offers. Jesus does not tell us to clean ourselves up before coming to him. He meets us with grace, speaks forgiveness over us, and invites us into new life.

What do you do when your faith feels weak, mixed, or uncertain? In “We Don’t Need Tissues. We Need Rescue,” Pastor Nate Ray looks at Jesus’ words in Matthew 19: “Let the little children come to me.” As The Front Church prepares for Kids Camp, this message explores why children are not interruptions to the kingdom of God — they reveal the kingdom. Through Matthew 19, Matthew 18, Matthew 16, and Luke 23, we see that every one of us does not ultimately need more self-improvement, distraction, or religious performance. We need rescue — and Jesus has come to rescue us.

In “What Is This Babbler Trying to Say?” we look at Acts 17 and Paul’s conversation at the Areopagus to explore why talking about Jesus can feel so intimidating — and why the response is ultimately not ours to control.
Paul felt the ache, found the space, spoke of Jesus, and trusted Jesus with the response. In this message, we also share why The Front Church is launching Alpha: a space for honest conversations about life, faith, questions, doubts, and Jesus.

Many wonder why the God of the Old Testament seems so different from Jesus in the New. But the Old Testament law was a shadow pointing to Christ, meeting ancient cultures where they were while guiding them toward God’s ideal. God’s holiness is like the sun—essential for life but dangerous to approach unprepared—so His laws protected, not punished. Through Jesus’ sacrifice, we’re made holy and can draw near to God. The cross reveals the perfect harmony of His love and justice, proving His character has never changed.

“Jesus Christ is perfect theology.” The sermon explains that difficult Old Testament passages, like the conquest narratives in Joshua, must be understood in their historical and literary context, including ancient warfare rhetoric and cultural practices. God revealed Himself progressively throughout history, and Jesus is God fully revealed. Therefore, Christians should interpret all Scripture through the lens of Jesus, who demonstrated God’s true character by dying for His enemies and teaching love rather than vengeance.

A NOTE FROM PASTOR NATE: The very first part of the message didn’t get recorded, but I felt it was important to share here: we were going to continue our teaching series, ‘Uh… I Have a Question.’ But then Wednesday happened, with Charlie Kirk murdered, in our own backyard. It became necessary that we create a space to process this, together, and pray. I also shared, if at anytime, you attend The Front Church, and it feels more like a political pep rally than church, go find another church, because we have lost the plot. This is bigger than politics – it’s us learning to go to God and grab one another in our grief, sadness, anger, fear, indifference, vulnerability, and numbness.

If you missed yesterday, we wish you were in the room for moments like these. We’re made to work through them together; not alone.

Pastor Nate makes our first stop in our new mini-series, Summer Road Trip. For Jesus’ people, baptism is not a suggested stop; it’s a must stop. It follows our decision to trust Jesus—it doesn’t save us, but it publicly announces our life with Him, and connects us to a 2,000-year tradition, initiated by Jesus for His people. It unites us with the global church across all nations and backgrounds. Going under the water represents our old self being buried, while coming up represents our new life in Christ. The only requirement for baptism? Confessing our need for Jesus. Curious about baptism and what we believe about baptism? This message is for you.

Discover the profound message of grace in Pastor Nate’s reflection on the parable of the workers in the vineyard from Matthew 20. This parable challenges our understanding of God and reveals the nature of God’s kingdom—a kingdom marked by grace. The landowner’s act of paying all workers the same wage, regardless of their hours, reveals God’s grace to be an undeserved gift, freely given. Grace initiates a relationship with God and transforms us, empowering us to live generously and lovingly. [June 9, 2024] It’s a wrap! Our Lead Pastor Nate Ray finishes our teaching series, “What is Church: More than Four Walls.” If no building contains the presence of God, and we, as Jesus’ people, are the “building” God is building, what’s the point of a building? Where did the first church buildings come from? When we think church is the building, it’s dangerous – we lose sight of the life God has called us to. But when we remember church is not the building, the building can actually become an incredible tool for good in the community and for us. You won’t want to miss this.

[May 26, 2024] Our Lead Pastor Nate Ray continues our teaching series, “What is Church: More than Four Walls” with the message, “Motivated by the Mission.” When the way we do church becomes more important than the why we do church, we’re in trouble. The New Testament doesn’t give us a playbook for Sundays, but does give us a playbook for life together. [April 14, 2024] “What is Church? More than four walls.” Our Lead Pastor Nate Ray kicks off our new teaching series around this foundational question. In Matthew 16, Jesus defines church, clarifies the messiah he will be, and clarifies the mission his people will be about. As we dive in, we’ll discover buried treasure. We’ll find our definitions challenged and expanded; we’ll remember whose church this is, and what Jesus promises: not even death can overcome what he’s up to in the world.

[April 7, 2024] This week, Amber Hicks shares from the Exodus story. Throughout the Bible God shows himself to be just, but also loving, merciful, patient and slow to anger. These qualities are highlighted through the Exodus story and God’s interactions with Pharaoh. Have you ever wondered why God hardens Pharaoh’s heart? Asking questions about the Bible helps to challenge and grow our faith. The story of the Exodus and the 10 plagues, when God delivered His people from slavery in Egypt, climaxes in the event of the Passover. This foreshadows Jesus Christ, who becomes “the Passover Lamb.”

[March 31, 2024] You don’t want to miss Pastor Nate’s powerful Easter message. The Christian story is not a story of escape to heaven, but of the invasion of heaven, into our broken lives and into our broken world. Easter invites us into living hope – our God hasn’t abandoned the world, but is at work in the world; our God hasn’t abandoned us, but is at work in us. Brokenness doesn’t have the last word; death doesn’t have the last word. Restoration has the final word; life has the final word; God has the final word.

Could it be, in our exhaustion – in our daily and nightly routines of screens and scrolling and our weekly rhythms that leave us drained, distracted, and uncentered – God’s voice is what we need to recharge, refocus, and recenter? This is what we’ll be exploring over the next few weeks in our new teaching series, “Noise: God is Speaking… Can You Hear Him?” Join us as we grow in learning how to hear and recognize God’s voice.

“How long, Lord?” This question fills our minds: another mass shooting; a relationship gone sour; the darkness of depression; the struggle no one else knows about; recently hearing the dreaded word, ‘cancer.’ How long, Lord? It’s a question voiced in Psalm 13; it’s the question the Jews of Jesus’ day were asking under the tyranny of Rome. Easter is God’s answer to the question, “How long, Lord?” New to Jesus’ story? Not so sure about this Jesus stuff? Whether you’re new, not particularly religious, or from another tradition, this message is for you.

Have you ever hoped God would do something, and He doesn’t answer you the way you wanted Him to? That is exactly where people find themselves in the story of Luke 19:28-44; this crowd is HYPED, and they’re hyped because they’re expecting a king like their kings of the past. But they’ll soon be disappointed, because Jesus is not the type of king they want (but He’s the type of king they need). Listen as our Lead Pastor Nate Ray teaches on Palm Sunday.

Jesus flipped tables because he is committed to removing whatever obstacles stand between people and a relationship with God. In Jesus’ day, Israel forgot they were supposed to prepare for company – that God’s intended purpose for putting them together was to bring blessing to the whole world. In this Jesus-table-flipping story from Matthew 21, Jesus symbolically enacts the way things were always meant to be. At The Front Church, we are committed to removing any obstacle that stands in the way of people experiencing a relationship with God. Take a listen.

“Who am I?” In his letter, Paul is inviting his readers to remember their true identity. True identity remembers who God is (Jesus!), who we are, and who He says we are. All sin, on the other hand, results from mistaken identity and leads to inner brokenness and outer brokenness. Paul himself was learning what it meant to live out of his true identity. Our Lead Pastor Nate Ray continues our teaching series, “Christmas Interrupted.” This Sunday, we take a look at the shepherds. The shepherds needed the lies they believed about themselves interrupted by a word from God. They thought they weren’t worth God’s love; they thought God was far away; they thought God didn’t notice; they thought because of their mistakes, they had to earn God’s love. In their own eyes, they thought very little of themselves. In the eyes of society, they were outcasts. In the eyes of religious society, they were religious outcasts. But God chose these shepherds to announce the good news of His Son. We invite you to look at this story with us with fresh eyes.
