Maria Rodale is an explorer in search of the mysteries of the universe. She is the author of Love Nature Magic, Shamanic Journeys into the Heart of My Garden, Organic Manifesto and Scratch. She is also the recovering CEO and Chairman of Rodale Inc, and also published the magazines Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Prevention, Runner’s World, Bicycling and Organic Gardening, among others. Maria is a mother, grandmother, artist, and crazy gardener who lives in Pennsylvania, right near where she was born. Maria was born into her family’s global media business. After the death of her father, Maria helped her mother manage the business and later became CEO of the entire company. During this dynamic and stressful time, gardening and landscaping were Maria's solace and refuge. In her new book, LOVE NATURE MAGIC, she talks about her experience with shamanic journeying. She says “…shamanic journeying is a tool for speaking directly with my garden and all of nature.” To embark on a shamanic journey, Maria meditates on a rhythmic sound like a drum or a rattle. From these journeys, she talks about a major awakening that happened in her garden. As she explains, it all started with Mugwort: “One day after a particularly frustrating bout trying to ‘control’ an ‘invasion’ of mugwort, I decided to see if I could do a shamanic journey to understand what, if anything, this plant was trying to communicate to me.” Ultimately, shamanic journeying has given Maria a much deeper understanding into the soul of these plants and animals. Later in the episode, Maria says that life is not really about survival of the fittest, but rather survival of the happiest. In fact, she’s found that when her plants are really happy, they grow and thrive like nothing she's ever seen before. Let's dive in and get started! In this latest solo-cast episode, Drew speaks about a powerful yet often under appreciated spiritual concept called the Art of Allowing. He begins by sharing these words by the Persian poet Rumi: "Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” Drew explains that there are two sides to manifesting outcomes, desires and goals. The first part is to know exactly what you want. However the other side is to allow it into your life. If you are struggling to achieve some goal or manifest a particular outcome, it may be because you are stopping yourself. This is the result of limiting beliefs acquired during the first seven years of life, or perhaps they have been handed down for generations. Instead of doing more and working harder, we need to utilize practices that help us UNDO these inner walls and barriers. Drew shares some of his favorites in this episode. So without further ado, let's dive in and get started!

Bob Soulliere is an Advanced or Level 2 Certified Wim Hof Method Instructor, Oxygen Advantage Instructor, Buteyko Educator, a dad, a husband, a Crossfitter, a novice open water swimmer, a cybersecurity process person, and a planking savant. He is also an explorer of life. Bob thrives on connecting people to their power, to resources and to each other. Bob began his healing journey with breath because he saw so much pain and suffering in the world. He wanted to give people a way to take greater control over their health and life. In his breathing training, Bob's game is to put people in the driver’s seat of their life with breathing and mindset. He works on the foundational components of health and helps people rediscover their personal power. For Bob, your nervous system is your entire experience of life. While it is often considered to be automatic, Bob explains that the breath is the remote control over the nervous system. It is the most innate control that we have. Bob says that we are all really good at grinding and working hard, but not so great at resting and relaxing. These are skills that can be developed and are truly life changing. Bob utilizes various tools like the Wim Hof method, Cadence Breathing, Heart Rate Variability biofeedback, and Breath Holding; however, his baseline is that he is a nasal breather 100% of the time. Why nasal breathing? Bob says nasal breathing is much more efficient and calming. Breathing through the mouth triggers the chest while nose breathing connects with your diaphragm, so it’s a much deeper breath. Bob says that it's critical to decide how you want to feel and then breathe that way. For instance, if you want to be focused and calm, then you should breathe that way. Or if you want to slow down and sleep, then you want to breathe that way. Hilary Boynton is a mother of five who refused to accept the quality of food her children were being served during school lunch. She began a relentless mission to change the status quo, and eventually took over the lunch program at her local school in Topanga CA. She worked with local farmers and food producers to create an affordable nutrient dense meal program that was based on the foundation of ancestral ways of eating and the results were astounding. Hilary went on to start her company School of Lunch with the goal of making real food accessible to everyone. In the beginning of our conversation, Hilary talks about her health challenges during her early years when she was a high-level athlete eating a highly processed & fat free diet. Although she looked healthy on the outside, her body was breaking down. Years later, when her 4th child suffered from eczema, she came across the work of Jamie Oliver and Alice Waters. A diet of raw milk and cod liver oil healed her son after a few months. This opened her eyes to the power and potential of food as real medicine. During this time, Hilary learned about ancestral ways of eating and healing from Sally Fallon and later Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride. Ultimately, Hilary took over the lunch program at a nature based school in Topanga California that her children were attending. She overhauled the menu to focus on farm fresh, seasonal and incredibly nutrient dense foods like bone broth, fermented foods, raw dairy and much much more. This led to the creation of Hilary's company called School of Lunch. Her mission is to share this ancestral way of eating with schools, communities, families and people all over the world. Hilary explains that if you lose your health, you really have nothing. That is why she prioritizes nutrient dense food as medicine to help prevent disease in the first place. For Hilary, making a change in your diet is really a mindset shift. Once you make the decision to make a change, you can draw power from stepping into the work and getting started... one step and one meal at a time. Dr. Henning Saupe completed his medical studies at the University of Ulm, Germany. After completing his doctorate in the field of psychotherapy, he was also awarded the title of Doctor of Medicine. Dr. Saupe worked in Stockholm for ten years as a general practitioner with a focus on naturopathy, anthroposophical medicine, and holistic cancer therapy. He founded the Arcadia practice in Kassel in 2006 and in Bad Emstal in 2014 where he currently serves as medical director. The father of three sons, Dr. Saupe lives in Bad Emstal, near Kassel, Germany. And he has a new book called Holistic Cancer Medicine that was released on Nov. 1, 2022 by Chelsea Green Publishing. Henning talks about his holistic approach to medicine. He says medicine needs to include body and spirit, otherwise it is incomplete. For Henning, most chronic diseases – like cancer – are very complex and need to be looked at from various sides. He says modern material medicine like drugs or surgery aren’t enough to cure these complex diseases. For this reason, Henning says we need to "widen" our spectrum of treatments. While western medicine cancer treatment is a tumor focused approach, Henning says it’s critical to look at the entire biological, psychological and emotional terrain around the tumor. He explores the fascinating science of Psychoneuroimmunology. It brings the nervous system, emotions and immune system together, since they always work together. This speaks to the power of the Mind Body connection. Henning explains that our thoughts and emotions have a real time and immediate impact on the immune system. Henning shares some disturbing statistics: the USA has more than one million new cancer cases each year, while Germany has about 400,000 new cases each year. The trend is going up by 2.5% every year. Henning writes in his new book: “When cancer presents itself as a disease, it is not the cancer cell itself that has a problem, but rather the human being, whose physical – as well as mental-spiritual – existence is threatened and endangered to the highest degree.” Later, Henning contrasts the vital field with the cancer attracting field. The vital field shows twelve measurable aspects that go into vitality. He says these 12 aspects of vitality can help us learn what the problems are and what can be done to solve them. Henning talks about his morning routine that includes meditation, gratitude and some breathing exercises. He also starts the day with a large glass of fresh, filtered water. In the evening, he looks back and reflects on his day. In the end Henning offers this advice to his younger self: “worry less and enjoy the ride more.” You can learn more about Henning and his Arcadia clinic for integrative medicine and cancer therapy here You can also order his new book released by Chelsea Green here. Dr. Amy Rothenberg has practiced naturopathic medicine since 1986 and is the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, 2017 Physician of the Year. When diagnosed with cancer in 2014, Dr. Rothenberg sought care at a renowned teaching hospital and also added naturopathic doctors who specialize in integrative oncology to create her medical dream team. Her book, You Finished Treatment, Now What? A Field Guide for Cancer Survivors is a roadmap for lifestyle and natural medicine to address health challenges that persist after care, and to reduce risk of recurrence. She enjoys the good life in Western Massachusetts with longtime husband and collaborator, Dr. Paul Herscu. Amy grew up as a kid who wanted to be a doctor, however during her early years, she became disillusioned with conventional medicine and how it failed to help her parents. She talks about what ultimately drew her into the world of Naturopathic medicine. It integrated all of her natural interests in one modality. Besides being a doctor, Amy is a three time cancer survivor. She completed all of her treatments and is feeling healthy and strong; in fact, she just completed a triathlon. As both a patient and a doctor, Amy recognizes that conventional cancer care is lacking in certain important areas. This lead her to write her new book: You Finished Treatment, Now What? A Field Guide for Cancer Survivors. She describes it as a “love song” to naturopathic medicine. For years, the American Cancer Society said that one in four people would get cancer. Now, they say it’s one in three and moving toward one in two! A recent study came out that 80% of cancer, diabetes and heart disease is lifestyle preventable. Amy wants people to feel empowered that they do have power, control and influence over their medical outcomes. She also wants to help people navigate what to do after they finish their treatment. Amy tells us some of the most powerful lifestyle interventions: exercise; anti-inflammatory diet; stop or minimize alcohol; stop smoking and vaping; manage stress; sleep; community and connection with other people; plus botanical medicines and nutritional supplements. Amy talks about why nature is such good medicine in her life. She loves spending time in the garden picking flowers and giving away flower bouquets. She finds it incredibly peaceful and healing. In the end, Amy shares advice from her current self to her younger self and gives the prescription for living a beautiful life! Don Jose Ruiz is a Toltec Master of Transformation and modern-day Shaman. He is a direct descendant of the Toltecs of the Eagle Night lineage and is the son of don Miguel Ruiz. He is the author of The Fifth Agreement, Ripples of Wisdom, and My Good Friend the Rattlesnake. Along with his family, he teaches workshops and offers transformational journeys around the world. Jose starts by talking about the underworld as a metaphor for personal growth. He says that when we face our demons, we are facing our fears and how we use the word against ourselves. When we experience emotional pain, we enter the underworld. But when we find our medicine and learn to heal our heartbreak, we grow in spirit, wisdom, and maturity. In this way, we start to believe in ourselves, and we bring our light into the world. The most important thing Jose took away from the underworld is faith in himself. He discovered his greatest ally – and that ally is himself. And the key to this is gratitude for life. Jose says that in the darkness, seeds are being planted. In this way, we must live our light and live our peace. It’s easy to blame others. However when we play the blame game, we suppress ourselves and give up our power. But, there comes a time when we find our divinity. Jose says that true spirituality is when we support the love of our life that is ourselves. Jose also reminds us that inspiration creates the artist. And when we share our wisdom, it creates ripples that travel endlessly and eternally throughout the universe. Jose shares how he practices gratitude. He says sometimes when his body feels anxious or fearful, he stops replaying the patterns from the past and instead returns to the gratitude for being alive. And he says gratitude leads us to self-forgiveness. Simply put, Jose says, “I’m not a guru, I’m not a teacher, I’m just someone who is grateful to be alive.” In the end, Jose and I have a little surprise - we join our voices together and sing "LET IT BE" by the Beatles. if you want to learn more about Jose, his books as well as his upcoming series of live events, you can find him here: https://www.miguelruiz.com/don-jose-ruiz Today’s episode’s sponsor is Microbiome Labs. Neema Avashia was born and raised in southern West Virginia to parents who immigrated to the United States. She has been a civics and history teacher in the Boston Public Schools since 2003. Her first book, "Another Appalachia: Coming Up Queer and Indian in a Mountain Place," was recently published this past March 2022. Neema begins by talking about how how her book Another Appalachia came together. Initially, her book was a collection of essays mapping her experience growing up in Appalachia to her Indian immigrant parents. One important theme in the book is nostalgia. She describes it as “a sense of missingness, of lost lovers or homes. The love that remains, even after objects of that love are gone.” Although she certainly doesn’t sugarcoat the racism and discrimination she experienced, for her, the hard parts were outweighed by the good. So much has changed about her hometown on Pamela Circle in West Virginia. When she was growing up, her hometown was healthy and people had work and there was civic engagement, However, today she says there is a level of pain that has left the people in really rough shape. Another powerful part of the book focuses on the role of community. Her understanding of community was shaped by the intersection of the Appalachian and Indian communities. She says both communities understand love in a very similar way. She writes: “We don’t say ‘I love you’ in my community. We cook for you. We host you in our houses. We accept your loved ones as our own.” Although her experience of community is different in Boston than in West Virginia, she says there are certain people in Boston that feel like home. She says the pace of life here in Boston is a lot faster and people don’t slow down easily. It’s very different than her life growing up on Pamela Circle. She says she feels like she’s chasing that "feeling" from growing up on Pamela circle. Neema speaks about the tension that she faces in her writing life. It raises some questions: how do you write non-fiction in a way that doesn’t make everyone mad? And what is the price of not expressing oneself and staying silent? Who does that silence serve? One of her writing professors encouraged her to “write with a clearer heart.” Neema tells the story of playing Pandemic Santa with her partner Laura at the beginning of the pandemic. They would cook lots of food, randomly drop it off and offer joy to others. This is one way to make the world feel smaller and find your power. In the end, Neema explains that her book has been medicine for many young people in Appalachia and elsewhere who might otherwise feel alone and disconnected. It’s a beautiful gift she can give her readers. You can learn more about Neema and her book Another Appalachia right here on her website: https://www.neemaavashia.com/ Today’s episode’s sponsor is Microbiome Labs. Dr. Chris Chlebowski is a naturopath, chiropractor, clinical herbalist, and homeopath with a medical practice, Ashland Natural Medicine in southern Oregon. At the clinic, Dr. Chlebowski and his staff use cutting-edge technology blended with traditional therapies, with a particular specialty in the treatment of chronic Lyme disease, mold illness, cancer, neurological disorders, and – most commonly – “mystery” diseases that other doctors have been unable to diagnose. When he isn’t working up a difficult case, staring into his microscope, or spending time with his wife and their two children, you can find Dr. Chlebowski climbing up the rocks or skiing down the mountains of Southern Oregon and northern California. In addition, he has written a fascinating, new book called The Virus and the Host available right here at Chelsea Green Publishing. Chris starts by talking about his background in various healing modalities, from Chiropractic to Homeopathy and Naturopathy. Given the complexity and prevalence of the illness on the planet today, he realized he needed more tools in his healing toolbox. As he says, "people on the planet are getting sicker and sicker, and the old things aren't necessarily working any more." Chris says that he's always been interested in pandemics. Back in December 2019, Chris reflects on how he started to read reports about this new virus in China and he felt terrified. He felt it in his bones that this was the big one. He began to do lots of research and make preparations even before it was widely reported in the media. At the onset of the pandemic in the US, he started treating patients and he began to realize what was working effectively. He followed three key principles: make sure bowels and kidneys are moving; avoid suppressing the fever; and bring down inflammation. Chris explains that people are exposed to more toxicity than ever before: “Fundamentally we have more toxicity in our body than we have ever had in the history of the planet.” This toxicity creates inflammation, suppresses the immune system function, makes us more susceptible to virus infections and directly leads to cardiovascular disease and cancer. For Chris, the reason he wrote the book is because he's afraid that we won't learn the lessons from the pandemic: “I wanted people to have a tool in their hand that if they read my book, they could be more prepared and less scared the next time." Chris also says that it’s not a matter of if the next pandemic shows up, but rather when. The 2nd half of the book is a guide book to get healthy and survive anything that’s coming along. Chris explains some keys for rebooting our health: Eat good clean organic food; Move the body; Drink clean water; Be fulfilled spiritually, emotionally and in our work; Create balance within our microbial inner world. As an herbalist, if Chris had to choose one herb that stands out above the rest, he chooses Dandelion. He says that dandelion is the archetypal most important plant because it’s perceived as a weed and grows everywhere, yet it’s a gentle and powerful detoxifier for the blood, liver and lymph. You can find Dr. Chris on his website right here. And you can order his book The Virus and the Host here. Today’s episode’s sponsor is Microbiome Labs. David begins by talking about his spiritual journey. He says that he was always interested in the “alternative” of everything. He was also deeply introspective, and his inner world was filled with extremes. David talks honestly and openly about his dark path that led to alcohol and drug addiction. He said that he felt like he had no guidance or path forward. It was this fear that drove him into drugs and alcohol. Finally, he was able to get sober and he attributes his sobriety to the power of visualization. After relapsing several times, he talks about having this transformative “emotional vision” on a bed at a sober house. Something clicked and a light in his head turned on and he’s never used drugs since. David explains that when you use visualization, you are creating new neural pathways in the brain. To this very day, David utilizes a healing toolbox of practices that have truly transformed his life. These tools include sound, breath, visualization and moving the body. It's a slow process but if practiced over time, they can produce big changes. At the beginning of the pandemic, David talks about the stress of losing his job. It was overwhelming and he wasn’t sure what to do with himself. However, as one door close, another opened. He dove deeper into his spiritual practices. During this time, David discovered the audio healing technology called Hemi-Sync. It works by integrating the two hemispheres of the brain. He says this was the catalyst for his growth and visionary experiences. He then dove even deeper into other healing modalities such as Biofield Tuning. David says that when we feel stuck, it’s often a sign that the inner landscape is not in alignment with what we want the outer landscape to look like. However, when we let go of old paths and embrace our true path, we open a space for synchronicities and opportunities to come into our life. Language of Light Wellness offers a path forward from a spiritual perspective for anyone feeling stuck. For the last 9 years, Microbiome Labs has been committed to advancing understanding of the human microbiome. They are at the helm of innovation, putting new formulations and technology in the hands of healthcare practitioners and patients. Among many other novel innovations, MBL can now help improve the gut-brain connection with their ZenBiome Cope and ZenBiome Sleep products. Maybe it has been a while since you’ve re-examined your probiotic choices, the science around the microbiome, or novel solutions that are coming out every day. Microbiome Labs will be here, at the forefront of science, continuing to pioneer health in this space. For more about this strain and other gut microbiome products, visit microbiomelabs.com. In this episode, Kiran talks about the relationship between the gut microbiome and the brain as well as the emotions. He explains that the gut is really the “other brain.” In fact, he says the gut and the brain are two parts of the same system. He says that the microbes in the gut feed the brain. In addition, virtually every neurotransmitter in the brain is also produced in the gut. If there is an imbalance in the gut, it is likely to be the same with the brain as they go hand in hand. Interestingly, there’s more information going from gut to brain than brain to gut. When there is an imbalance in the gut, this can drive mood, cognitive and even sleep issues. He says a dysfunctional gut is also the most destructive and toxic thing for the brain. It begins with a leaky gut as toxic substances escape the GI tract and cause damage to the brain. Furthermore, Kiran says that the same pathology that causes mood and sleep issues can over time cause other brain issues like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Dementia. Kiran offers some suggestions for creating more diversity in the gut: consume a probiotic, diversify the diet and spend more time in nature. Just these three steps alone can make a big impact. Kiran also talks about the power of Psychobiotics. He explains that psychobiotics are a category of probiotic bacteria that have a direct impact on the brain. He says “the perception of stress when you are on the probiotic [psychobiotic] is dramatically reduced.” Kiran also sees a reduction in inflammation and even changes in brain waves. When it comes to finding your purpose and passion, Kiran offers this important question: what is that thing you do that can enlighten, benefit or enhance the lives of others? You can connect with Kiran on social media such as Instagram. And you can also learn more about psychobiotics and other products at Microbiome Labs.

Nicolette Hahn Niman is a rancher, attorney and writer. Much of her time is spent speaking and writing about the problems resulting from industrialized livestock production. She’s the author of the books Righteous Porkchop and Defending Beef. Nicolette has written for numerous publications including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post and The Atlantic Online. She lives on a ranch with her husband and sons. Nicolette began her career as an environmental lawyer working with Bobby Kennedy Jr. Initially, in 2000, she worked as the senior lawyer for the Waterkeeper Alliance, but later transitioned to working full time on issues related to livestock production. During this time, Nicolette had been a vegetarian for over 10 years. At first, she believed that meat production was the problem, but after visiting farms and ranches across the country, she began to realize that the issue was much more complicated. She came to realize that the real problem wasn’t meat production, but rather the factory farm industrial system. In the media, there’s a perception that to save the planet, feed the world, and live healthier lives, we must avoid eating meat. The meat industry has been blamed for so many problems including the climate issue. But she says this “radically oversimplifies it.” Nicolette has been working on this issue for over 20 years, starting as an environmental lawyer and now as a rancher with her husband Bill Niman. She recognizes that everything depends on "how" you are doing something. As she says: “It’s not the cow, it’s the how.” Fascinatingly, when cattle are raised well, they are not just environmentally neutral, they are actually environmentally beneficial for the planet. Nicolette reminds us that we need animals to have a regenerative food system. In the end, she says that she’s learned that the path isn’t always straight, but rather it has twists and turns. Her words of wisdom: follow the path where it leads you & don’t be set in a particular pathway. You can learn more about Nicolette and her work on social media such as Twitter and Facebook as well as on the Chelsea Green Publishing website. Bruce H. Lipton, PhD is an internationally recognized leader in bridging science and spirit. Stem cell biologist, bestselling author of The Biology of Belief and recipient of the 2009 Goi Peace Award, he has been a guest speaker on hundreds of TV and radio shows, as well as keynote presenter for national and international conferences. Bruce says that over the years, we’ve lost touched with our feelings. To find our inner compass during this time of great chaos, we need to tune into our feelings because they are giving us an energy readout of our world. Our life is energy. If we are in harmony with that energy, it’s called good vibes. But if we are not in harmony, it’s called bad vibes. If you stop feeling, you start losing your life. Bruce explains that consciousness is creating our lives. While the creative conscious mind is operating 5% of the time, the subconscious programs - installed during the first seven years of life - are operating 95% of the time. According to psychologists, 60% of these downloaded programs are disempowering, self-sabotaging and limiting beliefs. So here’s the big question: how do we know our programs? Bruce explains: “your life is a printout of your programs.” Some of these programs support and enhance our lives, while others cause us to struggle and work hard. If we are struggling in some area of our life – health, wealth, relationships - it’s a sign that we have programs that don't support our conscious wishes and desires. Bruce also explains the power of energy psychology to help us change and rewrite our programs. In fact, he talks about reprograming his own self-sabotaging programs with more loving ones utilizing the energy psychology program called Psych-K. Many young people are dealing with mental health issues these days. The reason is that children have been growing up in a world of fear. If we are sending out fear thoughts & vibrations into the universe, then we will surely manifest something to fear. The reason is that our thoughts are not simply in our heads, they are being broadcast outward into the field and creating our world. Bruce asks this critical question: are you creating Heaven on Earth or a world of fear that you don’t really want? In the end, Bruce talks about ending this cycle of fear and negativity by becoming conscious parents to our children. He says we have the power to change the world if we install empowering programs in our kids. You can learn more about Bruce and his work right here: https://www.brucelipton.com/

"Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards" ~ Soren Kierkegaard In this wrap up show, host Drew Pearlman takes a look back at a few big ideas and themes from some recent episodes. The first big idea comes from the episode "The Superpower of Optimism" with Steve Gross. In particular, Drew focuses on Steve's hugely empowering Playmaker's Practice. Drew walks us through the practice by asking a series of questions.
Steve says this practice is not selfish at all, rather it is the conditioning needed to bring your best self to others. Another big idea came from the the Hugh Hendry episode called "License to Thrill." Hugh was a legend in the world of finance, but ultimately he gave it all up and moved to the island of St. Barts. He now roams the beaches, embraces nature and moves his body every day. He says that he feels as though he's getting younger. This raised some questions in Drew's mind: is it possible to actually age in reverse? Is it possible to get younger every day? And if so, what does one need to do? Does it require changing our diet, moving our bodies or even moving to an Island? Drew explains that the 1st step to live in reverse is this: it's about having a vision or an intention. He says: start with the end in mind and then reverse engineer the practices needed to get there. However, Drew makes a key distinction about our vision/ intention. He says that it isn't a thing, it's a feeling. When you really get specific, you recognize that what you are really seeking is a feeling. Consider these words by spiritual teacher Esther Hicks: “Everything that I think that I need to do is all only in order to propel me to some place that when I get there, I think I will be happier. So, everything that I am doing, no matter what it is, all of my lists of rights and wrongs… are all about me getting to a manifestation that I believe I will then be happier… So, why don’t I take a short cut and just go get happy?” In other words, if many of our life plans, action steps and goals are about feeling happy, then why not take the "short cut" and just go get happy right NOW! In the episode, Drew shares his own vision for radiant health and longevity. He explains that his vision is to run on the beach at 107 years young. This vision encapsulates a deep sense of freedom, joy, gratitude and an overall love of life. From this compelling vision, Drew has created various healthy living practices and he shares most of them in the episode. He also refers back to what Dr. Stephen Hussey refers to as establishing a “philosophy of health.” This requires doing some research, reading, watching videos, learning… and ultimately it requires some trial and error! In the end, you are the experiment. Or better yet, you are a work of art - a true Masterpiece!

Jason Mazar-Kelly (YogiJay) is a man of many stories. A Kripalu Yoga instructor, meditation teacher, breath-work specialist, mindfulness coach, CPA/accountant, consultant, husband, son, brother, friend, person. Jason is one of the Co-Founders of WholesomeMV and leads the Wholesome Yoga dimension which focuses on providing mindfulness-based practices through community collaboration and cooperation. He has been practicing yoga since 2011 and teaching yoga and meditation since 2014. Jason specializes in intuitive movement, meditation, breath-work, yoga philosophy and the subtle anatomies of yoga. Although Jason started as a certified public accountant and financial auditor by day and teaching yoga by night, he always knew that he wanted to give the gifts of yoga and mindfulness to others. It was always there in the back of his mind. Jason talks about his background of growing up with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) during his adolescence. He says he found yoga early on in college and it was transformative. When he first entered the resting and relaxation pose of Savasana, he noticed that his mind was still and calm, when normally with OCD it was a constant stream of thoughts and compulsions. Jason talks about his mission of bringing yoga and mindfulness practices into the school system on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. As a teen growing up with anxiety and depression, these practices changed the direction of his life. He now wants to share these practices with other young people. In his work with high school students, Jason talks about offering these young people a way to figure out how to be themselves and how to reduce stress in a safe and supportive space. In the middle of the episode, Jason guides us through a mindful breathing exercise. Enjoy and appreciate this beautiful opportunity to slow down and breathe with Jason. Jason talks about why breathing is so powerful and transformative. From an OCD perspective, the breath practice allowed him to create space around the sensations, thoughts and compulsions. He says although there will be ups and downs, if you can just keep showing up and doing the work, over time you can make big changes for the better. Jason speaks about the importance of not underestimating taking a pause and asking these inquiries during moments of anxiety, stress, difficulty or conflict: Am I still breathing? Am I still thinking? Am I still feeling? Am I still here? In this way, you give yourself a chance to take a step back and ask these four questions. This allows you to keep experimenting and trying new things. You can learn more about Jason and his work right here: https://www.wholesomemv.com/

Keith Van Sickle and his wife Val made their first trip to Provence decades ago, and it was love at first sight. After that, they came back every year until 2008, when they began a part-time life there, splitting their time between Provence and California. Keith has published two books about the couple's experiences in Provence: One Sip at a Time: Learning to Live in Provence and Are We French Yet? He also shares his local knowledge in a 3rd book called An Insider’s Guide to Provence. Keith starts by talking about his journey from working in finance in California to living part of the year in France. What started out as an expat business assignment in Switzerland led ultimately to a love affair with Provence. He describes life in Europe as living in color and life in California as black and white. Keith talks about some of the lifestyle differences between the US and Europe. Often times in Silicon Valley California, people live to work while in Provence, people work to live. He says life in Europe is much more balanced and includes a deep appreciation for the little things. There’s also a slowness to the lifestyle in Provence. In fact, he explains what it’s like to have a six-hour lunch! During these lengthy lunches, you are simply enjoying one another’s company and you’re not in a rush. Keith talks about how his travel blog in Europe evolved into a series of books. His first book includes a collection of funny and embarrassing stories from his experiences in Europe. He says he never set out to become an author, but the books have turned out to be very popular. For anyone with a dream to live outside their home country, Keith offers two pieces of advice: be open-minded and be patient. Since he is now retired, he has the happy opportunity to do what he wants a lot of the time. In this way, he says he follows his energy. He does the things that bring him the most joy today. One of my favorite parts of the interview is when Keith brings up the words of wisdom from his wife’s late aunt Ruth. At the time, Ruth was in her mid to late 90’s and she shared this advice with Keith and his wife. She said: “first do what you have to do, then do what you love to do.” To read Keith’s blog or find out more about his books, you can go right here: https://keithvansickle.com/

Marjan Kamali is the award-winning author of The Stationery Shop, a national bestseller, and Together Tea, a Massachusetts Book Award finalist. She is a 2022 recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship. Kamali’s novels are published in translation in more than 20 languages and The Stationery Shop was awarded the Prix Attitude in France. Her essays have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Literary Hub, and the Los Angeles Review of Books. Marjan begins our conversation by talking about her best-selling book The Stationary Shop. It's a love story that spans 60 years, going back to Iran in 1953 just before the coup that brought the Shah into power. So much of her research came from her father who shared memories of his adolescence. Marjan explains that she was born in Turkey to Iranian parents. She's lived in seven countries on five continents. Even though she hasn’t lived for that long in Iran, she’s always been curious about the country that was described so differently by her parents than how it is portrayed on the news. She and her family moved back to Iran in the summer of 1980 after the revolution. It was a very volatile time where things began to change drastically. She said at the time of the revolution “it seemed impossible” that things could go so far to the religious right. During her childhood, she explains that her sister encouraged her to read and write during the war with Iraq while taking shelter in the basement as bombs fell on Tehran. She says writing has saved her and continues to save her. She calls it therapeutic. For Marjan, war is chaotic and nothing makes sense; however, writing gives her a sense of control and she can bring order to the world of her characters. She calls this art form incredibly empowering. When it comes to offering advice to other writers and artists, she says “throw away the clock.” Pretend that the writing is just for you and your growth. Focus on the art, the craft, and don’t worry about the audience in the beginning. Do your art for art’s sake. She says: “As long as you know what it is you want, just stop worrying about how you are going to get there because the how will take care of itself.” Just do what you can in the present moment.
