All Hail Computer Overlord! Our casual adventurers have been tasked by the benevolent Computer Overlord to watch three episodes of Star Trek featuring societies run by computers to make sure Computer Overlord isn’t offended.
In ‘Return of the Archons’, Kirk and the Gang are here for the Festival and for the first time, we get to see Captain Kirk talk a computer to death, then we return YET AGAIN to season One of TNG as Wesley and some of the Enterprise kids get kidnapped by an ancient civilisation led by Deep Throat from The X-Files to be given some new parents in ‘When the Bough Breaks,’ and finally Boimler discovers if he’s going to be a good boss or a bad boss when he’s tasked to lead a repair team ‘In the Cradle of Vexilon.’ All Hail Computer Overlord, the cake is a lie!

T’lyn is here to eff with Boimler, would people in the 24th Century haze others?

Prepare your magical runes and put on your pointiest hat because we’re going to be talking about Magic (without a ‘k’) and three different episodes where Magic is believed to be involved. Of course, unlike ‘The Magicks of Magus-Tu,’ we’re not delving into ‘so magic is actually real’ territory and instead, magic is more inferred.
In ‘Spirit Folk,’ Tom Paris’ weird obsession with making Harry kiss a cow gets the crew of the Voyager into trouble on the holodeck while in New Eden, Pike, Michael Burnham discover a planet of people descended from survivors from World War III who have renounced all technology and Owosekun was there as well and then, in ‘The Elysian Kingdom’, M’Benga gets to play out his daughter’s favourite fantasy novel while in the real world, Anson Mount has way too much fun playing a cowardly cad! Are we sure this nebula isn’t evil? Alakazam!

Our brave casual explorers watch three Ferengi-based episodes of Star Trek without any Quark-based antics, first up is probably TNG’s most successful attempt to try and sell these guys as the Big Bad as Captain Picard is forced to face his past as a revenge attempt leads him to relieve ‘The Battle,’ after that, Trip gets to do a Home Alone/Die Hard as the worst trio of Ferengi try to pull an ‘Acquisition’ on the Enterprise NX-01 and finally, the Lower Decks get to see what Ferengi TV and Miles’ AO3 account is like as ‘Parth Ferengi’s Heartplace’ makes us ask… do Rutherford and Tendi like each other… in a sexy way? Happy Monday, everyone! To celebrate the start of the working week, we’re looking at Star Trek episodes where people mess with the memories of our cast and put them through menial, awful work.
O’Brien must continue to suffer in Hard Time, where he’s lived through decades of prison time just for being a bit nosey. Can he deal with the mind-shattering prison sentence, or will he still be traumatised and we’ll never speak of this after the episode’s end?
Then our main feature is a two-parter where the crew of Voyager are brainwashed into factory jobs (apart from Paris who couldn’t even manage that). Watch the rivalry between the Emergency Command Hologram and Harry Kim! Janeway has a romance plot and there’s some bad CGI!

It is, unsurprisingly, a book on Chaos Magic – a topic it turns out I knew more about than I realized. And while overall I liked this book a lot, it does have one glaring issue for me… but only because I’m a pedantic nerd.

Insert all your tired 2025 jokes here because after the last nine months, we’re pretty much out as this episode, we go “All-Voyager, All the Time” with a slate of episodes concerning “The Year of Hell,” one of Voyager’s more infamous wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey moments.
In “Before and After,” we see the writers try and tease out what never comes to pass, as a time-displaced Kes discovers something horrifying: Harry Kim married her two-year old daughter! Then we go into two-part territory as we enter “The Year of Hell” and a lot of bad things happen to Voyager while Kurtwood Smith makes us ask “Is Annorax Star Trek’s best villain?” But seriously… Harry Kim married a two year old and I don’t care if she’s a short lived alien race, that’s real weird, especially considering who the father is!

Put on your best private detective hat and prepare to get into character as we talk step into the Holodeck and prepare ourselves for inevitable disappointment. In ‘The Practical Joker,’ the Enterprise computer gets wacky while Bones, Sulu and Uhura fail to enjoy a primitive Holodeck. In ‘My Way,’ Odo uses AI to make girls like him and we get a lot of song and dance numbers (and the best IDW comics pitch) as we meet Vic Fontaine. And in Strange New Worlds’s Space Adventure Hour, La’an gets to beta-test the Holodeck and nearly kills everyone on the Enterprise doing so. Typical. Bloody Typical.

Welcome to Neelix’s Kitchen Nightmares you doughnuts!
I’m Gordon Ramsey and we’ve got three meals for you to shove in your face from three questionable kitchens.
Neelix’s kitchen’s covered in fluff and filth and seems to have been made in a large office meeting room. Will his food help Seven of Nine in “The Raven” or will it bring back dire flashbacks? I think we all know how it’s going to go.
Next up is the unnamed chef of the Enterprise who actually has a full kitchen. Hoshi Sato comes in and takes over, does she think she’s me or something? She gets the job done, possibly a bit too much in “Singularity”. Also there’s some delightful nonsense with a chair.
Finally William T Riker’s got the midlife crisis giant pizza oven out for a visit from his space dad, JL Picard in “Nepenthe”. Has he got what it takes, or will this episode and pizza both be undercooked? Whatever it is, it’s better than the replicated cake that gets thrown up all over La Sirena!
This is actually Charlie, I’ve no idea what Gordon Ramsey sounds like, I hope you enjoy the show!

In ‘Arena,’ Kirk fights a string vest wearing space lizard while Spock watches and provides inane commentary (hey Spock-o, that’s OUR job) and then in the Strange New Worlds Season 2 finale and Season 3 opener ‘Hegemony Parts 1 and 2’ Pike spends more time hiding and less time building rudimentary cannons, Spock and Chapel play a little Alien Isolation and Ortegas loses herself in the job… Bogus. In Enterprise’s ‘Observer Effect,’ Trip and Hoshi get sick off Klingon rubbish while Travis and Reed get possessed by one very eager energy being and one who is basically #quietquitting, in Deep Space Nine’s ‘The Assignment,’ O’Brien’s life is once more a living hell when his wife gets taken over by the Pah’Wraiths and Rom struggles to make friends at work and finally, we round it off with our main event, Dr. Beverly Crusher’s adventures with sex-ghosts who live in candles ‘Sub Rosa’ and Charlie and Miles find themselves watching one of Star Trek’s worst-ranked episodes and ask the most important question, ’Do the Scottish know there’s a Scotland in Space?’ Honestly, it’s much more fun to watch Troi get heavily involved in talking about Crusher’s sex dreams than it ever is to have to engage in discussions on the ethics of terrorism as we did last episode. Dust off your illegal VHS tapes and be prepared to write a strongly worded letter to Points of View because we’re back with the second part of our ‘Banned by the Beeb’ two-parter looking at three more episodes of Star Trek that suffered the wrath of British censorship. We’re back with three episodes, the final two banned TOS episodes, starting with ‘The Empath’ where William Shatner has to do some Dark Place style slow-motion running and McCoy definitely violates some medical practices as our latest butt-headed aliens the Vians pull out the chains and then with ‘Whom Gods Destroy’ where Kirk and Spock are repeatedly taken in and out of rooms and forced to ask chess questions by a mad-man in mismatched boots. Which episode is more controversial- SHOOT THEM BOTH, SPOCK! But after that, the fun and hijinks go away with ‘The High Ground,’ a TNG episode banned due to a line about Irish Reunification and Miles and Charlie find themselves having to ponder the age old question, can a show written, produced and made by Americans talk about how fighting for independence against oppressive colonialist Imperialism and somehow seem to conclude that it’s a bad thing, actually. Or, as Miles’ wife Reanna said as she watched the episode with him ‘Gosh, this has aged well.’ There are some things we can try to make fun, not everything.

Show Notes: Despite what Americans may think, moral panics about TV exist everywhere and today, we begin the exploration of a doozy. The start of a two-part look into four episodes of Star Trek that came a cropper at the hands of Auntie Beeb (a not-so affectionate term for the BBC) that of course allows Miles to indulge in one of his favourite talking points about British movie culture – Video Nasties!
Because of this, we’re only looking at two episodes per part. In ‘Miri,’ we see some very familiar style backlots and some very 1960s ways of talking to young women which definately makes our casual explorers think Auntie may have a point! Then, we jump straight to the third season of The Original Trek as our heroes endure ten minutes of plot and forty minutes of bloody nonsence in ‘Plato’s Stepchildren,’ possibly one of the most famous episodes of Star Trek (unless you’re from the Deep South) but is consent more important than controversy? Whatever we decide, the Big List will change forever!

Talking Points: Video Nasties, why were these episodes banned from broadcast until the 90s, Miles’s first choice for his Non-Trek thing indicates some wider issues, Alien Romulus, Miles misses Stupid Drunk British Lads smashing stuff with pipes, Astro’s Playroom, Miles and Charlie have different views towards achieving Platinum on games, Miri, Miles only wants to talk about lists, not get put on one himself, the always creepy ‘she looks 14 but she’s actually 300 trope,’ Kirk’s charm here does not read well in 2024, exact replicas of Earth are a little silly, how many SF societies wipe themselves out looking for immortality (and Miles pulls out a bit of ‘meanwhile in the UK, Doctor Who was doing this’ coincidence), we briefly touch on the rather triggering experiences of Grace Whitney (Yeoman Rand) shortly after this episode and her leaving the series, the oddly faced Steven Jay Pollard, Droogs in waiting, Shatner clearly trying not to punch a child, did the BBC have a point with Miri? Violence from children, inferred child-death, Hey Jude, the majesty of the theme for ‘The Good, The Bad and the Ugly,’ whenever people bring up eugenics, just turn around and run, we’ve started to incorporate our experiences with Space 1999 into watching Star Trek, nonsense starts and just generally never stops, Charlie gets slap-happy, Mary Whitehouse would not approve which is fine because we don’t approve of Mary Whitehouse. The nonsense gets creepy when Spock starts singing and it gets REALLY creepy when Kirk and Uhura is made to smooch, Charlie really wants to make a Dragonball Z joke here, when it’s done, Miles is pulling off the band-aid, some real shame on our heroes her, is this our first mention of slash-fics? This episode doesn’t go full-Hellraiser, No Gods No Philosopher Kings, sorry Parmon, one day Miles will go on a long tirade on how people misuse the term ‘Lynchian,’how much truth is there in the legend, would you show this to your partner and we can’t escape Shatner’s disturbingly pointy nipple, Miles has watched some wank in his life and that definately reflects his opinion of the episode, Miles poses Charlie a very important question.

It’s the fiftieth numbered episode (Network note: We’d numbered it as 55, but Miles and Charlie don’t always tell us ahead of time when an episode is getting a number or not), but! Do our brave and casual explorers want to do something special? Do they want to drastically alter the podcast’s format and mission statement (Miles is still holding out for #blakesboys), not particually, but they’re interested in when Star Trek’s done it! Join them as they finally talk about Star Trek The Original Series’ second attempt at securing a series as we meet Captain James “R.” Kirk as he goes ‘Where No Man Has Gone Before’ and proceeds to meet our first Godlike being who needs a swift beating. Then, in Discovery’s ‘That Hope is You Part 1’ we heard into the 32nd Century, but discover that Star Wars-style wretched hives of scum and villainy still exist, but we finally get a chance to make the Ship’s Cat actually pull his weight around here. Finally to round it all off, we watch ‘Star Trek: Picard’s’ second season opener ‘The Stargazer’, and even technical problems with the call can’t stop us from realising that the show has some problems with repeating itself. Will there be drastic podcast changes in the future? If Miles doesn’t stop trying to make #blakesboys a thing, possibly!

That’s right, we’ve got not one, not two but three Enterprise episodes as we watch all of the Augment trilogy in one go. Should they be ranked as one episode or three? How much does this want to be Wrath of Khan? Have they stopped with the whole ‘Space War on Terror’ and does Earth look less like a poor Xbox game background?
In Borderland, the mission’s off to a bad start as Orion slavers abduct a lot of the crew. Then in Cold Station 12 we get one of those TOS-style space stations dedicated to science and a ton of deadly viruses. Finally in The Augments, the CW version of Wrath of Khan plays out as petulant augments try to incite a war between the Federation and Klingons!

Star Trek’s universe is bizarre and horrifying at times. Cosmic beings summon orcs to stab you in the back, alternate versions of your flagship get stuck in a wormhole, nonlinear entities get taught about time through memories of baseball, love and death. It’s all a bit weird and we’re going to revel in it today by talking about cosmic horror.
Ships full of Vulcans get a rough time today, starting with The Immunity Syndrome where a space amoeba kills them and the rest of a solar system. Can the crew discover a solution when their energy and the ship’s are rapidly dwindling?
The next cosmic entity is Nagilum, who is self-aware, godlike and a real jerk! The Enterprise has to work out a solution to get this bastard off their back, but it might mean their own deaths! Wesley picks the best time to take a break from the Conn and we get some camera experiments to distract from this being a bottle episode.
Finally we’re back to tormenting a ship of Vulcans in Impulse, where they’re driven into a mad, zombie-like rage! Not only are these T’Pol’s old colleagues, but she’s also infected. Can the crew survive until help comes? Also Trip & Mayweather get their fanciest gold spacesuits on to go all Minecraft on some asteroids.

We’re excited to announce the release of the fourth season of our horror anthology let’s play series The Meatgrinder! While past seasons were released monthly, we’re trying something new this time around — and that’s releasing the nine episodes weekly starting Tuesday June 4th! Every Tuesday after, a new episode will come out.
That’s right, we’re starting the summer of meat!
And this is probably our darkest season yet, as Gen Prock takes a turn in the GM seat (while Trae gets to finally be a player in the game). The cast is a little different this year too. Gen Prock, Trae Dorn, Crysta C, and Becca Johnson all return, while newcomer Amy Quinlan fills in for the players who couldn’t make it this time around.
Here’s your brief for season four:
Strangers awaken in a jungle complex with no memory of how they arrived, or what horrors lie in front of them. Someone has laid a series of deadly challenges in front of them, and there is no hope for escape. Will anyone survive this truly nightmarish meatgrinder?

It’s time to draw some dots all over yourselves as Casual Trek’s discussing Dax! This one’s a Ko-Fi donor episode, so thanks Ben for the opportunity to talk about some more Trill shenanigans. We normally talk about three different shows but here we’re looking at three different Dax hosts. There’s also a weird sub-theme of muuuurder.
In “Dax”, Jadzia’s on trial for a murder that one of Dax’s previous hosts may have done. We’ve got Odo in detective mode, a trial in Quark’s bar and a gloriously disinterested judge. In “Equilibrium”, we delve into the dark past of Dax as Jadzia starts remembering things which none of her hosts have done. Oh no, she’s got a Dark Passenger! It’s Joran Dax! In “Field of Fire”, Ezri Dax investigates a murderer on DS9 and has to enlist Joran Dax to help her hunt them down. Joran takes the opportunity to oversell how much of a murderer he was, but we all have a fun time. Unless you’re a murder victim, I guess.
Just as a warning, there’s some beeping on the audio as there was some building work going on. We also go on way too long about Davy Crockett and how little we know or care about him. It’ll make sense when you get there.

But, we have a little B-Feature before we hit our A-Picture and so we’re also covering the other time a member of the Enterprise stole the Enterprise because the needs of the one, outweighed the needs of the many: The Menagerie. Was it a clever way to reuse the unaired pilot of Star Trek- ‘The Cage’ (See Episode 1 of this show) or a clever way to scrimp on some gold-pressed latinum for a series that was more expensive than it looked.
Then, we go all in on The Search for Spock, as the Casual Trek crew won’t stop raving about Christopher Lloyd’s turn as a baddie. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, but sometimes, the needs of the few is to be rated and reviewed on all good podcatchers and apps!

It would finally be time to rank the most infamous episode of Star Trek: Voyager! That’s right, it’s Threshold! While we could fill an hour and a forty minutes talking about one episode, but rather than doing that we’ve decided to have some Trekxtra Curricular studies. As well as being the bestselling author of TekWars, William Shatner also released multiple albums. We decided to put ourselves through his first album, The Transformed Man. It was… quite an experience. Look out, the Holodeck’s malfunctioning and we’re all trapped inside! And the safety protocols have been disabled! And the holograms are self aware! Today we’re looking at the Holodeck in three different shows and all the horrors it can cause.

Miles loves ‘The Mutants’ (although it turns out Charlie was actually going to be watching ‘The Sea Devils.’ Biggs Darklighter sans Porn Stache.

An attempt to talk about the book seriously briefly occurs before it devolves into the pleasures of saying the name ‘Fatty Bolger,’ Miles’ school having a Tolkien Society (although as he’s older, Miles is starting to think that was a ploy by his parents so he didn’t want to go to the ‘Common’ school all his friends were going to), Charlie’s adventures in both boardgame and RPG games in the Tolkien world and Miles revisiting childhood trauma with the SNES Attempt to translate the books.

Nerd & Tie is excited to announce that the first episode of Season 3 of The Meatgrinder, our anthology role playing game Actual Play podcast, is coming to earbuds near you on February 15th 2023! Subsequent episodes will be released monthly following that.
The Meatgrinder is an anthology role playing game actual play series where no one survives for long. As characters die, new players cycle into the table, and the cycle continues until the story reaches its end. Every season promises new settings, new characters, and new horrors. But, like, in a fun way? In a fun way. It’s a funny show to listen to — trust us.
Season 3 of The Meatgrinder brings us to the future year of 2249, as the sentient races of earth have reach for the stars. The ISF Bellerophon with its count of 10,000 passengers is headed to the colony world of Praxion 7. Even at faster than light speed, the journey will take ten years, and with the exception of three crew at a time taking month long shifts to run the ship, the colonists all sleep in their stasis pods.
Unaware that five years into this journey something has gone very, very wrong.
The morning after a very eventful evening, where Liz danced with her “fiance,” D played poker with her alternate egg self, and Amy almost burned down a bar and got challenged to a duel… things seem almost quiet when Moira, the servant of the “real” Elizabeth Stormwood, stumbles into the manor. Things won’t stay quiet for long, and the chaos continues.

We did our best to keep it light and not get too far into the more gruesome elements, but it was a very grim series of events that still echo in the history of Scotland to this day.

In this special hiatus presentation of my Patreon series “Stardust Sessions with Lozzie Stardust and Bree NicGarran,” we’re fulfilling a promise made in our inaugural episode and having a go at King James the Sixth of Scotland and the First of England. A hundred years ago the Wizard Gallfus failed in overthrowing the rule of the evil Necromancer Kallofrax. As he lost his powers, he prophesied that a chosen one would rise up on the eighth day of Balmond to defeat him. Gallfus was, frankly, lying. Losing his powers (but retaining his immortality), the wizard traveled the would, eventually telling dozens and dozens of kids that they were secretly the chosen one.
Because again, he was lying… but if you toss enough “chosen ones” at a problem, maybe it will fix itself?

They’re off to the north side of a city whose name they don’t know in the hopes of locating an Elven wizard who could potentially repair the magical stone so they could get home.

Nerd & Tie is excited to announce that the first episode of Season 2 of The Meatgrinder, our anthology roleplaying game Actual Play podcast, is coming to earbuds near you on February 15th 2022! Subsequent episodes will be released monthly following that.
Unlike season one, which took place in a modern setting, season two takes place in a long time ago in a distant fantasy world. A hundred years ago the Wizard Gallfus failed in overthrowing the rule of the evil Necromancer Kallofrax. As he lost his powers, he prophesied that a chosen one would rise up on the eighth day of Balmond to defeat him. Gallfus was, frankly, lying. Losing his powers (but retaining his immortality), the wizard traveled the would, eventually telling dozens and dozens of kids that they were secretly the chosen one.
Because again, he was lying… but if you toss enough “chosen ones” at a problem, maybe it will fix itself?

On this episode of Nerd & Tie, we’re reviewing the first half of the seasons for both HBO Max’s Peacemaker and Disney+’s Book of Boba Fett. Also Trae keeps talking about Beforeigners. After that, we discuss ColossalCon’s announcement of “ColossalCon North” this November in the Wisconsin Dells — and how complicated our feelings are about it.
And then we talk about anime for some reason. Like Devilman and Urusei Yatsura.
As long as I can remember, people have been debating whether or not it’s okay for non-Jewish witches to incorporate Lilith into their practices. Is Lilith closed? Is it cultural appropriation? There’s so much misinformation in new age and poorly written witchcraft books on Lilith, it’s hard for some witches to get a clear picture. Like I’ve run into folks on social media talking about Lilith as a “Goddess,” which she very much isn’t. Let’s dive into the origins of the folklore surrounding this figure, and I’ll let you decide whether or not it’s okay to work with Lilith.
But, uh, spoiler – I don’t think you should.

Today, Maximo is a wealthy multi-billionaire who owns scores of companies across the globe, but in 1984 he was a poor kid who lived near the Las Colinas resort in Acapulco, Mexico, who dreamed of one day having a job at the resort like his hero Don Pablo. Maximo tells the story of this transformation as a birthday present to his nephew Hugo, who is also starting to come of age, humorously embellishing the retelling, and occasionally forgetting the names of some of the figures from his past.
Vinnk and Sean compare this show relentlessly to movies and shows past with similar plot framing, where it excels and where it may fall short of its predecessors, but mostly we really want to you watch it so it gets a second season in 2022.

So Stormwood & Associates field operations team 623 traveled through a tear between worlds, and find themselves in a new world. That’s… that’s pretty much what happened. I mean, a guy disguised as a janitor stole the Staff of Trancurra, opened a tear between worlds, and the team ended up going through after him. That’s it.
Now they need to figure out what to do next.

The video game market can be unpredictable, and the last year has proven that even well-founded leaks are unreliable in the face of global chip shortages. Even so, we try to read the tea leaves about what’s coming in 2022. Five years into the Nintendo Switch, will there be a successor? How will NFTs impact gaming, if at all? Will Sean finally beat Bart vs. the Space Mutants, and stop making us all suffer with live streams?
Vinnk and Sean try to use their powers of anti-prognostication for good for the coming year, which apparently includes Sean finding an Xbox Series X less than a week after recording this episode.
