Hello Growth Minded Marriage Community! Kevin and I are still over here living our dream life, only much much slower and intentionally. We are loving our summer slow down and reset. Thanks for being patient while we take this break and gather ourselves for Season 2 coming September 2021.
Meanwhile, I had a burst of creative energy that I channeled into taking one step forward with a project that feels like something, just not exactly sure what yet. Thanks for being a safe and supportive place for me to leave this for the moment. Certainly feedback would be appreciated if you feel so inclined.

And, yes, we are still working on a summer newsletter to our Growing Together email subscribers. Sign up HERE. Turns out that while we are honoring our commitment to truly slowing down, projects are moving slower than anticipated. We simply have to trust they will eventually get done. Ex. We have finally installed a new microwave that has been in our garage since June 2020. We haven't had a microwave for 9 1/2 years. This is big stuff.

Whether you believe burnout, adrenal fatigue or HPA axis disruption are real medical conditions or not, it is undeniable that stress has a negative impact on the body. We all have different sources of stress and different tolerance levels for that stress. This is not about comparison, who has it worse or who can suck it up and keep going longest. This is an honest conversation where Kevin and I realize that we just don't feel good. We want to own that and move forward with a more gentle approach to our life. We know we have to say no to some things, even exciting things, in order to protect the life we already cherish.
With that awareness, we share our main takeaways from Season 1 and how we plan to move forward. Join us for our final episode, and thank you for being a part of our journey. Let's grow!

We have had to take some really hard and honest looks at our careers over the years. I was a full time working mom with 1, 2 and then 3 kids. Kevin was a work from home dad and also our primary caretaker. Life looks differently now. We both are working part time, and sharing the kid duties more evenly. After all the changes, we both have come out the other side with a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction with our careers. Join us as we explore how a sense of control, mastery and autonomy have kept us feeling good at work, and how you can use these same concepts to bring more fulfillment into your own career. Ready, let's grow!

A few months ago, Kevin read Adam Grant's latest book Think Again, and loved it. On Kevin's suggestion, I went searching for Adam on my favorite media, podcasts. I was in luck! I found his podcast by TED called Work Life, and downloaded an old episode from May 2019 called The Perils of Following Your Career Passion. Needless to say, I was very intrigued. I knew from Kevin that Adam has a contrarian perspective, but I had never heard someone say to NOT follow your passion. Of course I had to listen. After 3 years of searching, worrying and dreaming, I have found my own understanding of what it means to have "work life balance" or a "dream job". Kevin has figured out his magic formula over the past 3 years as well. We both agree with Adam's take on why your dream job should not be solely based on feeling passionate every day. Kevin and I know that our dream jobs are tools to allow for a life where we can follow our curiosity; free from the notion that they have to make us money. Listen along with us and see what you think about Adam's unique perspective.

“Most of life is choosing what you already chose.... Our lives are stories of recommitment. ~David Brooks
Kevin and I come full circle in this episode. We are recommiting to our dream life. Our lives will be a balance between a satisfaction with who we are now, and an openness towards who we could become. We are focused on making the ordinary feel extraordinary. Our lives are about staying true to what we have already chosen, and exploring the expansive world our focus now allows us to see. Plus, we continue to re-establish intimacy between the newest versions of ourselves.
*Editors note: After numerous listens it was determined that Kevin was in fact correct in his early assessment @ 3:10. Mary was possibly a tad defensive in the moment. #youwereright

As a recap (in case this is your first episode, hello there!):
Kevin and I have been tracking our downloads since March 11th, 2021. At the end of 30 days, we made a $1/download donation to Count The Kicks in honor of our good friends' son, JP. Count The Kicks is a nonprofit dedicated to empowering and educating mothers to track their baby's movements while still in the womb. Tracking baby's movements for 30 minutes every day can alert you to changes which may be a sign something is going wrong with your baby. Count The Kicks then urges women to take those concerns to their healthcare professional.
Kevin and I chose to donate to this nonprofit after interviewing Kelli and Pat in episode 15, Growing Through Grief. Kelli and Pat courageously share their story of life after infant loss and they hope it is a resource to others struggling with grief. Thank you Kelli and Pat for allowing us to show up for JP in this way. It was our honor.
And now, our total is in and it’s big! pssst We had an anonymous donor!

Kevin and I want the holidays to be filled with magic and wonder. We want our 7, 5 and 3 year old to look back on their childhood with warm happy memories. And, we decided early on to be honest with our kids, and let them in on the big secret. Over the years, we have been building our family's Easter traditions incorporating the idea that Mommy and Daddy are the Easter Bunny. Sure they ask questions and are sometimes confused by all the outside information, but we have a simple message that allows us to communicate openly and honestly with our kids. If you have been feeling a little uneasy about how to approach "The Bunny" in your own home then this episode can offer some reassurance. Your kids can still have a truly magical experience even if they know the bunny isn't real. Happy Easter everyone! We hope you get to spend it with the ones you love. -Mary & Kevin

Our long time friends, Kelli and Pat, courageously share their story of growing through grief after losing their son, Joseph Patrick (JP). The trauma of JP's death and life's journey after such a devastating loss could have easily been a story that ended in separation for Kelli and Pat. Instead, they grew to recognize that the most loving thing they could do was to support each other as they healed in their own individual way. They exemplify the value of prioritizing your own mental health and healing before you can show up for another; even if its the person closest to you. Now, after 5 years, they look back on their journey and share how they have grown together through the devastating loss of JP.
This episode is dedicated to Joseph Patrick Stewart, born still March 15th, 2016. Thank you for teaching me the superpower of empathy. Love, Ocrew Aunt MJ

Our two part parenting series now becomes a trilogy. Listen, we are recording and releasing episodes in real time so we didn't know life would create another episode. We are thrilled to announce that parenting is a tad less draining these days and we want to share what has been working. February 2021 brought cold weather, power outages and chaos over much of the U.S. All our time indoors and the hell that can be an unanticipated snow day (am I right?) pushed us to our final limits. And, you know what we found there? A creative solution. Things are looking up, kids are sleeping better and, most importantly, Kevin and I are dwelling in feelings of hopefulness and some dang peace!

This is the second episode of our 2 part series on parenting. Check out Ep. 12 to start from the beginning. Kerri Gray is a mother of 4 and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has spent the bulk of her career teaching positive parenting classes to families in the greater Kansas City area. Now, due to the pandemic, her classes have been moved online and made accessible to everyone. She works in conjunction with a non profit organization in the Kansas City area called, Lee's Summit CARES. I found Kerri after hearing that Lee's Summit CARES offers positive parenting classes near our home. They referred me on to Kerri and she graciously accepted our request to be interviewed. We were humbled by her patience with us, generous spirit and passion for helping parents gain resilience, reduce stress and find community.

With a bit of nerves we offer this honest conversation about our parenting journey thus far. In the first half of this episode, we bring you up to speed quickly on the past 7 years of parenting. Some of our listeners may not even know we have kids! We have a son who is nearly 7, and two girls ages 5 and 3. But, this episode really is about the struggles we have been facing in parenting since the pandemic. We just aren't exactly sure what we are doing wrong, or if it is supposed to be this hard? All we know is that we have to keep going even when we don't want to, keep seeking advice and keep communicating with each other.
This conversation is the first of a two part series. In two weeks we look forward to sharing a conversation with Kerri Gray, LMFT M.S. Kerri is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She works with ReDiscover and Lee's Summit CARES, nonprofits in our local Kansas City area, to bring education to parents, kids and teens using the positive parenting approach. Kevin and I are anxious to talk through some of our struggles with her and receive guidance from her positive approach to parenting. Along with her expertise she will be sharing some free resources to help us all be happier parents raising happier kids. Amen!

Kevin and I have been on a quest to find "our people". We know that our friends can influence our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Which is great, but Mary was always left wondering, "How are we supposed to meet these magical people?!" Well, now we have some answers!
Kathy Gottberg is an author, blogger, and free thinker. She has been a writer for nearly 40 years; publishing 7 books and blogging at SMARTLiving365.com since 2011. Her husband, Thom, is a commercial real estate broker who has been committed to living his motto "You get to make it up". They are a true team, supporting and pushing each other forward in all their endeavors. After a fluke encounter with Kathy's powerful message about Rightsizing, Mary mailed her a very excited handwritten Thank You card, and asked Kathy to be her mentor. This conversation followed a Zoom call the week before and many emails back and forth. We are so grateful, truly, that we can look to Kathy and Thom as role models, examples of what this journey may look like, and a glimpse into all the possibilities that still lie ahead.

Kevin and I were thrilled when Kristen Young, Executive Director of Leadershape, accepted our interview request. In doing so, she took a big leap of faith. She exemplifies someone who is willing to take a risk and open herself up to new experiences, something Kevin and I deeply value. Kristen believes in the mission of Leadershape, "To transform the world by increasing the number of people who lead with integrity and a healthy disregard for the impossible." The last 16+ years of Kristen's life have been dedicated to helping others see their own innate greatness and become agents for positive change. Two of those people were Kevin and I when we attended Leadershape's flagship program, The Leadershape Institute. Our conversation with Kristen clarified how the values and ideas planted in us at Leadershape have continued to guide us. A lot of pieces fell together for Kevin and I, and a lot of questions were answered as to where we got this desire to align our lives with our passions and values. We hope this conversation inspires you to ask some questions about your own purpose and passions. Let's Grow!

Finding the right path as an individual as well as one half of a partnership, is well, tricky. We have found that our only answer is more open and clear communication. But how does someone communicate calmly and clearly when there are kids and cleaning and work and noise? So much noise. You would think hosting a podcast with your partner would help, but it only highlighted the ways that we were missing the mark. Trusting that each of us wants to grow together can feel like a risk. What if you bear your truth and the other person just can't accept it? This is the risk we must be willing to take if we want our most true and authentic life, together. And we discuss how we are finding the time and the QUIET to have a damn conversation.

We hope you enjoy this episode's fresh perspective. We want to share what gratitude actually looks like in a marriage and in life. It is one thing to be told that "you should start a gratitude practice," and quite another to hear how it has shaped our daily lives. For both Kevin and I, gratitude is ingrained in the way we see the world and how we communicate. It is certainly a lighter way to live and a happier perspective, but we don't want to mislead you that it solves all our problems. We use it as a tool towards happiness and hope you will as well.

I feel truly inspired to share my new self-compassion practice. You know when something just hits you on the right day at the right time and it feels like you just stumbled in to your future??? As I continue on my personal growth and healing journey I have become more and more open to new ways of approaching the same problems and finding a lot of creative solutions. Self compassion feels like the next creative (yet logical and rooted in science) addition to my journey. I release the feelings of foolishness or vulnerability when I tell people "every morning I look in the mirror and tell myself that I am my own best friend". Nobody judges me more than me, and now I say enough. I deserve better.
Resources I mention:
This is NOT a comprehensive list, but truly where I started. These three researchers (Germer, Neff and Shapiro) appear to be the biggest names in the field. So I definitely stumbled into the best place to start.
I am honored you are joining me on this journey, and I want to hear from you. Seriously!

Kevin and Mary look back on their childhood to explain how they developed their own growth mindsets aka their secret to happiness. They discuss how their different coping strategies to Kevin's childhood bullying and Mary's childhood trauma and subsequent shame gave them the capacity to one day fully embrace the power of the growth mindset. Their early lives led them on a twisty path to a magical place called Leadershape when they were in their early 20s, which is where they first met. Leadershape is where Kevin was able to unlock the power of Mary's growth mindset. Kevin is happy to take full credit.

Mary candidly describes her desire to have a career that is aligned with her whole self. She discusses her current career and how she is exploring the pieces of her authentic self that seem to lie outside the parameters of her work as a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant. This conversation between Kevin and Mary was impromptu and is a great peak in to what their many "off air" conversations sound like.
