The first session of the Pearson Centre's 2021 annual conference. This year the change conference is being held virtually across the next few weeks. Our first session featured Hon. Jim Carr and a discussion about the Prarie Provinces and western Canada. The session was moderated by JP Gladu and Iris Evans.
In the latter part of the 1900s, we were succeeding in building a more cohesive accepting society with many policies and laws which seemed to have growing support. What's been different since 2000? As diversity in Canada, the US and many other countries increase and as the voices of human rights grow louder, is there an increasing push back, a backlash, a "whitelash"?

National childcare has been discussed in Canada for decades, but COVID-19 has highlighted that it is not only a social policy or early childhood education issue but an economic policy imperative. The American election demonstrated a deepening of the polarization that is taking place south of the border. There is a growing sense of nostalgic depravation on one side and a growing determination to end inequality and racism on the other, with little room in between.
Former Premier of Ontario Dalton McGuinty speaks with Prof. Justin Gest who has written extensively on the growing sense of marginalization that is driving people to the extremes while the middle is getting hollowed out, or at least is getting squeezed out of the political discourse. Since being first elected as an Manitoba MLA in 1973, Hon. Lloyd Axworthy has made a name for himself in Canadian politics. Axworthy served in 4 federal ministerial portfolios, and was elected at both the provincial and federal level. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997 for his internationally recognized leadership in the Ottawa Treaty on Landmines. Today he is Chair of the World Refugee & Migration Council, working to build international cooperation to respond to the refugee crisis. Axworthy is best know for his work on economic and international portfolios, most notably as Canada Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1996 to 2000.
The implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for migrants and refugees are real and urgent. As an already increasing challenge across the globe, the pandemic has only exacerbated the challenges faced by refugees. Coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic and the largest workforce lockdown in a generation, governments are seeing how women have been disproportionately affected. With high rates of job loss, many women and are less able to return to the workplace compared to their male counterparts, and at a slower rate. The lack of adequate, safe, and affordable child care is one of the key hurdles for many women. As such, some economists are advocating for a national childcare program. Without this, some are saying we run the risk of setting back the advancement of women in the workforce by decades. Supportive private and public sector employers say they need their female employees on board in order to re-build.
