Megachurch pastor, Creflo Dollar of World Changers church in College Park, GA just outside of Atlanta was charged with battery for assaulting his 15 year old daughter. He is alleged to have choked, thrown to the ground, kicked and beaten his daughter with his shoe. This incident is disturbing on multiple levels.
It is clear that Creflo Dollar is suffering from severe anger/rage issues and possibly is dealing with unresolved issues within his personal life. On Dec. 31, 2011, an estimated 61,000 people crammed foggy downtown Mobile just a few feet away from the Mobile River to see a 350 pound Moon Pie drop from the city's second tallest building. When the personal collides with the professional against the backdrop of technology what are the rules? This is the heart of the issue of the Weiner scandal when the married US congressman finally admitted to sending graphic pictures of his body to several women.
If you’re a poor city with dwindling residents, virtually no tax base with staggering debt and feeble ineffective leadership, should the state government be allowed to dismiss the input, vote and will of the people and their elected officials by stepping in to takeover, deed transfer and privatize the entire town?
Across America and the world a growing number of court cases dealing with the legality of videotaping and photographing the police are slowly forcing laws to catch up with rapidly evolving multimedia advancements. In the meantime innocent people are being charged with an array of felony and misdemeanor counts ranging from wiretapping, obstruction of a police investigation/justice, resisting arrest and videotaping of police.
The implication is that Schwarzenegger’s media coverage has been far less chaotic and much less venomous because he is white while Tiger Wood’s media coverage was not only hyper-sensationalized but salaciously and viciously reported because he is of African American descent.
In sharing this with the world Leonard joins other high profile male sexual abuse victims such as CNN’s Don Lemon and filmmaker, Tyler Perry in shedding much need light upon a very dark issue across American and the world.
The shocking revelation that former California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger fathered a “love child” with a member of his household staff while married to his now separated wife Maria only highlights the increased need for stronger morality litmus tests for politicians.
As shocking as these alleged events might be, I believe that the biggest takeaway from this is that the potential face and background of a rapist can be just as varied as society itself.

If America took the precious time to get to know and to understand the lives of millions of individuals directly impacted by the passage of the Dream Act, then this pending piece of legislation would overwhelming be approved by the US Congress.
Last week Christina Norman, was dismissed from her duties as CEO of Oprah Winfrey-Discovery Channel Communications reportedly for managing the four month OWN network with ratings weaker than the network it replaced. Although dramatic in fashion, the public firing of Ms. Norman still won’t solve the problems plaguing the fledgling network.
Contrary to mainstream beliefs, the escalating prices at the gas pump aren't being driven solely by supply and demand or unrest in the Middle East. Additionally, both Pres. Obama and the US Congress each have the power to curb rising fuel costs that doesn’t involve expanding oil reserves in the US.
So how can a nation, proudly steeped in religion and religious freedom with a sometimes overbearing degree of piety, conservatism and moralism boldly justify publicly cheering and waving American flags and popping bottles of champagne over the death of another human being?
It’s time for Black America to man up and grow a tougher layer of political skin against the attacks of the Birthers, Teabaggers and a growing chorus of fringe detractors who are racially motivated to tear down President Obama’s presidency.

Today I was working in the yard trying my best to yank up weeds from their roots versus chopping them at the surface. With every weed I pulled up it only reinforced for me just how we as humans must also pull the weeds of negative thoughts and people out of our lives by their roots.

Last week several white political pundits tore into President Obama’s pick for Supreme Court Justice, Judge Sonia Sotomayor. She was called a reverse racist by Rush Limbaugh, an affirmative action pick by Pat Roberson, and was falsely accused by former US Congressman Tom Tranredo of being a member of a Latino KKK organization. In actuality La Raza is the country’s largest Hispanic national civil rights organization similar in nature to what the NAACP has been for black people.

A 19 year old African American son, brother and friend is dead. Abraham Biggs Jr. committed suicide on Nov. 19 by taking an overdose of pills during a live streaming webcast before an internet audience of strangers. Mental illness among African Americans, once kept in the “closet” of black families is gradually being more openly discussed but not quickly enough as alarming statistics reveal.

As an advocate, activist and now a consultant within the LGBT arena, I can tell you from personal experience, there is a deep arrogance and belief among many within the LGBT community that Black communities should instantly whip onto the civil rights bus for the LGBT community just because we too are a minority.

The White Attire Affair is an annual social event held in Washington, DC attracting thousands of men and women from across the country. Sponsored by the UMMAH Endowment Fund, the event is a HIV/AIDS social marketing awareness and fundraising event focused on African-American communities.
Lavish in presentation and entertainment, nearly 100% of the attendees are black. In addition, attendees wear white as a symbol of unity in the mission to ending HIV/AIDS.
From time to time I find myself in need of inspiration and/or motivation in order to get through the rough patches of my life. In fact there have been plenty of times where situations have gotten so bad that I desperately wanted to give up and give in. But thank God that didn’t happen.

Despite last week’s increasingly louder calls for Senator Hillary Clinton to bow out of the presidential race by media pundits and politicians alike, it is best for America that Mrs. Clinton remain in the race, push forward and win the nomination over Senator Barack Obama
Mrs. Coretta Scott King, widow of slain civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated the remainder of her life to keeping Dr. King’s dream and legacy alive. In fact she became the world’s foremost human rights leader by championing the voices of the underrepresented, mistreated and the downtrodden.
But there was another man in Mrs. King’s life who wielded enormous power and influence but from behind the scenes as her personal assistant. This man was Lynn Cothren, a white and openly gay then teenager from Tennessee who for over 23 years worked at the foot of Mrs. King learning and applying the principles of Kingian Nonviolence.

In the hilariously funny 2007 movie, Hairspray starring John Travolta, I was struck by a phrase towards the end of the film that was uttered by actor, Christopher Walken. Walken’s character looked towards his onscreen wife and said “Do it now or forever wish you had.”
Those eight simple words jolted me as it made me think of how scores of people have lived and continue to live their sad lives of “woulda, coulda shouldas.” This is such a miserable and crippling mental state of existence because it haunts its victims for the remainder of their lives. Become The Change That You Want

One of the most profound statements ever uttered was by Mahatma Gandhi who stated “Changing the world begins with changing yourself; you have to become the change you want to see in the world.”
I recently finished reading powerful two books targeted towards empowering urban communities that are often shut out of the American dream. The books were “Come On People” by Bill Cosby and Dr. Alvin Poussaint and “Do You” by Russell Simmons. Both books take on victim-hood issues and challenges its readers to rise abover their socioeconomic conditions in order to become victors and captains of their fate.
One particular sticking point in both books dealt with the culture of media, specifically the culture of hip hop and rap as expressed through its music and imagery. READ MORE HERE

In my opinion a person who lives a life of integrity does so simply by living out their lives as spiritual beings. It does not require an announcement to the world of their internal worth, but instead we are able to see it and feel it whenever we’re in their presence.
The following are 10 ways, laws, pathways and directions that I have observed of people who live a life of integrity:
#1. -They live by Values and not by Volume.
Whatever a person values in life is what they will direct their energies towards and pay more attention to. So instead of saying “I love my spouse” which is volume, one can see the love in the way one spouse treats the other and vice versa. Thus people with integrity live by their values and not by the volume of their words.
So instead of shouting in church, “I Love the Lord,” one can see the love in the way they treat others; take time to mentor young people; give an encouraging word or a friendly smile to those who society has deemed to be the least of these.

Senator Hillary Clinton was much more engaged but much less poised. She was clearly on the defensive against her onstage rivals. She spoke louder and faster but at the same time quickly rattled off in clear tight sentences her plans for the future thus distinguishing herself and her proposed polices.
Her sound bites were powerful, repeated and took root. If I didn’t remember anything else, I know that she is for ending the war; diplomacy in Iran starting with economic sanctions; taking $10 billion dollars back from industries such as the HMOs and against fixing social security on the backs of the middle class.

A sermon preached a few weeks ago by my pastor and spiritual mentor, the Rev. Michael Bernard Beckwith of Agape International Spiritual center reminded me of the awesome power and ability that we all have in our lives to move it in the direction that we desire versus being a just a product of our lives.
Beckwith referenced Dr. Martin Luther King’s 1963 “Letter From A Birmingham Jail” where MLK wrote that “The church was not merely a thermometer that recorded the ideas and principles of popular opinion; it was a thermostat that transformed the mores of society.”

But for Yarone Fishman, peace is already a reality waiting for us to recognize and to embrace as the embodiment of our highest calling. As undefined as visual art can sometimes be there is still a measured structure to it which can resonate with a viewer so much so that it “pops” from the canvass into the psyche of a mesmerized admirer.
Termed as pop impressionism, this style of artistic expression has been perfected by San Francisco artist, David Derosa, whose recent “Catachismic” series takes on a distinctly spiritual theme while using opposing shades of light and dark, positive and negative shapes with text that contain dual meanings of his subjects in everyday poses.

I was recently inspired on a trip to Detroit, MI, by Rev. Renee McCoy, minister at MCC Detroit, and Rev. Darlene Franklin, pastor of Full Truth Fellowship, during a praise service where both ministers uttered the phrase “Go in God’s peace, power and passion.”
The mere alliteration of these three words was powerful enough but the substance behind them evoked a monumental force of thought, a creative sense of inspiration, and an enlightened spiritual re-awakening in me that I felt urgently compelled to share with you. I truly hope that you gain the same spiritual resurgence that I have from it.

I've chosen six diverse books for my personal reading pleasure for the summer. A few weeks ago I hopped a plane to fly down to my former home, Atlanta to speak at a Men’s Conference at the progressive, Tabernacle Church.
I moved away 3 years ago so this was a treat to be able to visit and see friends again.
Friday 4/20/2007: Once I got into Atlanta and found my way to my hotel, I spent Friday evening putting the finishing touches on my presentation. I stayed in mid-town Atlanta at the Courtyard Marriott in absolute peace and quiet.
Another major problem that I see in relation to poverty and the rising rates of homelessness is panhandling. They’re the street beggars who stand on the corners, at traffic intersections, in front of stores and near churches and badger those who pass by for change or food.
Dealing with street beggars truly tests the Christ in me. Am I a bad person if I don’t give? What would Jesus do at this exact moment?

God speaks to us in an untold number of ways, methods and instances. It could be through a baby’s laughter, the roar of an ocean, and through the words of a bumper sticker.
Regardless of how it is done, we must always be open to receiving the Creator’s message despite the conduit or person that it might travel through. This means that we must continously keep our spiritual eyes and ears opened so that we might receive downloaded instructions straight from heaven as to what we must do and how we must do it.

So why such a big debate over whether a federal Hate Crimes bill should be created and passed? Well conservative and fundamentalist pastors are nervous because they would like to continue to preach hate towards gays/lesbians but are now afraid that the new law may be used against them from preaching the gospel of intolerance which they call love.

The upcoming two week siesta that talk show host, Don Imus will be taking from his radio show in the name of what CBS Radio and MSNBC are calling a “punishment” does not go far enough to punish the cankerous Imus. Further, Imus’ two week suspension gives just a lukewarm warning to those currently in the media along with those emerging into it about the power, responsibility, and accountability of their words.

The media must finally take a stand against its own on issues dealing with intolerance. It simply amazes me to hear epithets being uttered by high profile media individuals who later grudgingly seek cover behind a standard, insincere apology. Well it has happened again, this time with radio host, Imus and his show producer Benard McGuirk.
Although the Imus’ show originates from WFAN Radio in New York city, it is simulcast to millions on MSNBC radio.
Sen. Barack Obama’s $25 million dollar fundraising fete was impressive but maintaining and growing his vast supporter base will be difficult and most likely will fizzle by the start of next year’s primaries for two reasons.
First, Obama’s greatest strengths which are his relative youth, fierce utilization of technology, and his charismatic style will eventually begin to plateau by the end of the third quarter going into 2008. Similar to a bell shape curve from a college statistics course, Obama’s fundraising prowess and novelty will see a slow but steady decline, putting him on par with Clinton and Edwards, popularity wise.
Despite the wealth of her political connections evident by $26 million dollars raised during the first quarter of the year, Senator Hillary Clinton still seemingly lacks the passionate charisma of Barack Obama and the energetic earnest of John Edwards, her two closest competitors.
To be honest Senator Clinton simply cannot give a speech, at least one that rouses people to their middle-American core; and this may actually be her unexpected downfall.
Well the ground didn’t exactly shake when Rev. Jesse Jackson Jr., a two-time presidential candidate backed Sen. Barack Obama over the weekend. Although several civil rights leaders of yester-year, (i.e. Sharpton, Jackson, Belafonte and others) have been reluctant to openly support the rising young senator, Rev. Jackson’s endorsement represents a symbolic passing of the torch to an upwardly mobile generation of blacks who are less motivated by racial politics.
Often just as soon as we get used to who we are, what we do and settled into both the routine and the stability of our lives, there comes an inkling, a desire and often a pressing if not urgent situation that forces our hand and moves us into a whole new dimension, a vibrantly different quadrant and a quirky divergent plane of life.
If you have ever taken the time to notice it, you will understand that life happens, occurs, unfolds and reveals itself in cycles or in seasons. After you’ve been through a few of these cycles you will begin to recognize and react faster than you did before and if you’ve really learned your lesson; you will become proactive in facilitating the changes of your life.

Church this past Sunday was phenomenal. Dr. Benard Beckwith preached from his theme for the month of January, The Eternally New You. He stressed that our lives are constantly unfolding but many of us are actually preventing the process by occurring due to our limited point of view and understanding.
His sermon was titled “The Way and the Means.” He encouraged us to do the following 3 things in order to realize the fulfillment of peace, joy and abundance within our lives:

The Black Gay Man: who is he, what does he think, and why? What are his personal challenges and how does he seek to overcome them? And does anyone really care about the plight of Black Gay Men?
If so, who are they and what are they doing to uplift America’s seemingly most downtrodden minority? From HIV/AIDS, racism, homophobia, hate crime violence, depression and spiritual isolation, the life of a Black Gay Man can often be challenged resulting in emotional insecurities that accompany him throughout life. From the very wealthy to the poverty stricken, Black Gay Men still face many of the same issues of life.
The Alchemist was written by Paulo Cohelo and orginally published in 1987. This simple narrative tale is a blend of the spiritual and the inspirational as it tells the story of a boy who seeks the treasure in his life by pursuing his destiny despite the tremendous odds that repeatedly descend upon him.
Back in October 2007 there was an assassination attempt on the life of former Pakistani Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto as she returned back to her native country after an eight year exile.
Although a suicide bomber killed 140 people during her homecoming procession near Karachi, she still engaged herself in a three-way race for prime minister. However something very deep inside of me knew that she eventually would be martyred. READ MORE HERE!!
What was once thought to be a sexual taboo a generation ago is now a commonly accepted sexual thought. However, this evolving change did not occur because of a declining moral society but instead it has been ignited by a more mature, studied, researched and dialogued society.
Hence, this is the premise of Zumanity, a Cirque du Soleil production created three years ago that’s still playing at the New York-New York Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. From corny penis-banana jokes to an erotic lesbian swim sequence, to an intense African Seductress dance, to a Cuban male stripper; this unique production brings conservative middle-Americans far closer to embracing their hidden inhibitions and curiosities about sexuality than ever before.
