The next phrase in the Lord's Prayer is one that kind of flies by half the time, but it should make us pause and consider. It goes, “lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from Evil.” Some translations say, deliver or save us from the Evil one. This topic is going to take us two messages to get through, and we have a little bit of background to set the stage on how this part of the prayer is also related to the Lord’s Supper. Forgiving others. Wow, could we talk about something else? This one is a little too much to deal with. John is no stranger to living out what it means to forgive others. If you want to hear that story, go back and listen to the last episode – it was pretty shocking story of what happened to John in high school. Anyway, forgiving others is a tall order, but it also comes from a God who has forgiven a lot. And that’s what we want to tap into today. Passing on that forgiveness, but taking into account, it’s going to be a struggle and imperfect. We are in the Lord’s Prayer study, and this message is titled: Righteous Prayer Focuses on the Forgiveness of Others.

We have a loving and forgiving God who is slow to anger. Doesn’t that powerful fact make you just want to pray more? In the Lord’s prayer we ask the father to please forgive us our debts. You see, our sin stacks up pretty quick, and God’s one way for us to be delivered from the debt is to seek His forgiveness. In other words, We have a powerful debt that only a powerful, eternal God could offer us. Let’s hear more about God’s love for us now. In the Lord’s prayer we encounter this phrase, "Give us this day our daily bread." This is a very clever part of the prayer. It acknowledges the daily gift of food from God and it shows us that God is very interested in meeting all our daily needs, not just physical food. And, in His generosity, he’s very much interested in meeting the needs of others around you. We are going to see how all this works in the message today called righteous prayer focuses on the provision of the Father.

In the Lord’s Prayer it reads, Your Will Be Done on Earth as it is in Heaven. That’s a powerful thing to pray, isn’t it? I have some big questions about Gods will. For starters, what is God’s will? Does he have a hidden will? Do I need to worry or be anxious about trying to figure out what’s God’s will for me? If God is going to accomplish his will on heaven and earth? What does He need me to pray about anyway? John has some solid answers that address all those questions. What do you think the phrase, “Give us this Day, our Daily Bread” in the Lord’s Prayer. Other than daily provision for food, is there more behind this phrase? Absolutely! What is the Kingdom of God? Is that something that we can build and bring into the world? Jesus taught us in the sermon on the mount and the Lord’s prayer, that the Kingdom of God is HIS GIFT TO US. Why? Because, it’s simply impossible to get into God’s Kingdom apart from Jesus. The Kingdom of God is God is a gift, not a wage that someone can earn. Such good news!

When Jesus was giving the Sermon on the Mount, he was also calling out the self-righteous and hypocritical scribes and pharisees. Their bad theology painted negative picture of God. They made him feel unapproachable, angry & capricious. But, Christ gave his followers that Lord’s Prayer, which showed us that God is gracious and forgiving of those who broke his law. Jesus called out scribes and pharisees back in the day for much of their distorted religious ways. One example is they would use prayer as a platform and try to bring glory to themselves. That’s not what prayer is for. Instead, if you have your theology right, you’ll see that righteous prayer gives glory to the name God the Father. That’s what Hallowed be your name is all about.

Lesson #2 in this prayer set is called Jesus Honors Righteous Prayer. In contrast, he calls out and condemns unrighteous prayer. The good news is Jesus wants to make a way for us to be with the Father. He not only gave us a model of how to pray -- as the adopted sons and daughters that we are -- but he also takes to task things like “showy” or “religious” activities that are antithetical to the true relationship and closeness we can have with our Father in Heaven.

Who doesn't love a well cared for garden right? Gardens are incredibly therapeutic. They are incredibly therapeutic. As we look to scripture, we see there is a theme of at least 4 fascinating garden scenes. John has studied these 4 places of beauty, and has pulled out the Gospel good news from each of them. For instance, we have the iconic Garden of Eden that was meant to be a place of sweet fellowship with God, and in the New Testament, we have to the Garden of Gethsamane where Jesus pleaded with his Father. There’s so much to these significant places of cultivation and growth.

What would we do every day with out some reminders on our calendar or phone, right? Sometimes reminders are exciting, and sometimes reminders …. Well, they are a little bit of burden and have a way of making us feel inadequate because we need to change some habits or don’t have time, capacity or resources. Well, our hope today is that this message will fall into the former category for you and be a fresh gospel reminder: Our bodies are sacred. What is the practical advantage to baptizing children of believers? Christian baptism sets someone apart. Baptism for infants, children or adults, means that the name of the Triune God (The Father, The Son, The Holy Spirit), has been placed on them, and that they are part of the trinitarian faith. It’s a powerful, countercultural declaration to the world that God is the one true God, and that we identify with Him and are trusting in Him for our salvation.

welcome to Season 2 of the Him We Proclaim Podcast with John Fonville. Just like in Season 1, we are continuing to play our favorite Christmas-themed messages for you. Season 2 is called Five Songs of the Nativity. We are going to hear from some classic Bible characters in this set. From Elisabeth and Zachariah, to Mary, the Angels, and Simeon. When the Angel came to Mary to tell her she was pregnant with Jesus, she learned that the Lord God would give Jesus the throne of his father David. This was the beginning of many promises God was fulfilling through the birth of Jesus. This is Him We Proclaim with John Fonville and we are in the advent message called “The Offspring of David”. It’s originally from a series called O Come O Come Emmanuel. We have a lot in store today on this topic of God’s Promises to David.

Advent is a season of anticipation, right? Believers in Christ are anticipating the Second Coming of Christ. This is the second Advent Message called The Offspring of Abraham. It’s not only about the prophetic genealogy of Abraham to Christ, it’s about the great promise from God called the Abrahamic covenant. Which means the Gospel is for All peoples and all nations. It’s such an exciting and encouraging message for our faith.

According to John, preaching has gone through several significant cycles throughout history and we’re going to learn more about that. Well, on one side, to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions – this was the message of Titus to the Cretan believers at the time. On the other side, Grace is also teaching us to live self-controlled and godly lives in the present age. John is also going to be sharing a passage about the second coming of Jesus.
