It's Topsy Turvy week here at GCR and the show starts with some unfamiliar voices - It's the guys from After The Whistle on The Other Room (1:00)!
The guys introduce themselves (2:00) and give their personal definitions of Feminism. Donald goes first (3:00), Eames goes next (4:25) and reminds us of an old TV commercial to prove his point. It's then Cyril's turn (6:23) and Moos rounds it off by trying to poke a few holes in Cyril's definition (7:35).
Moos asks Donald (8:15), Eames (11:25), and Cyril (17:10) to give examples of gender based inequalities they have experienced. Donald and Eames stay close to home and Cyril reaches out to one of his favourite Superhero franchises for help.
The show moves on to oppressive centering of the discussion (19:10) and Eames takes us down a much darker side to gender based prejudices in Ghana. Moos introduces the Ally Continuum and asks the guys to tell us about where they fall on this spectrum (25:30) and and how that has affected their lives. Kess updates the ladies on the release of 82 Chibok girls, three years after their kidnapping. “We do not negotiate with terrorists” -- or do we (9:00)? After a week away, the Roomies catch up on What's Poppin' (1:25). Cel swoons about Zimbabwe's community Friendship Benches, where grannies offer a little more than just cookies and warm milk. For What’s Poppin’, the roomies talk personal style. AJ highlights our 2nd lady Mrs Samira Bawumia, Ghana’s latest style icon(1:35). Kess sees nothing wrong with her choice of attire during last week’s Independence Day festivities (2:50), Vee feels her personal stylist deserves most of the props (3:17) but Cel disagrees, shouting out Mrs B. for her taste in stylist (4:34) & proclaims her #styleGoals (6:27).AJ states a fact (7:09). Cel brings up a suicide case in recent news (9:54) & suggests change in how mental health is handled.AJ points out that mental health issues are nothing new (10:42) & looks forward to policies reflecting this (12:29). Kess talks about the stigma associated with mental health services (12:46) & Vee offers condolences to those affected. Cel feels hearing people’s stories on depression will have a positive impact(15:44). The atmosphere is heavy.

For What’s Popping, AJ brings up Viola Davis’ big win at the Oscars (1.48) and the whole Moonlight-La La Land mix up saga. Lara thinks Viola’s speech to cast members was more emotional than to her hubby! ooh?! (2.20). AJ is mad at the aftermath of the Oscars blunder — Moonlight having to share the spotlight with La La Land on news, headlines, etc. (4.15) Can’t Black people ever win?! Vee doesn’t understand why Warren Beatty didn’t get as much backlash for the Oscars as Steve Harvey did for Miss Universe 2015 (5.09) Could it be a race issue? Cel highlights the academic achievement of Dr. Ellen Boakye, who swept 10! awards from the University of Ghana Medical School (5.45), and the efforts of Dr. Ayorkor Korsah who was featured on the cover of Forbes Woman Africa talking about Robotics and its future in Ghana (7.35). Vee applauds the increasing number of women in government in Ghana (9.05), while AJ wonders if there’s more to it than just female representation (10.30), but Lara believes people are starting to understand the role of women in decision-making and acknowledges women in leadership roles in the corporate world (10.59).
Vee’s love for African movies though! Cel urges Ghanaians excelling to actively mentor young ones in the society, schools, etc (14.07). Vee wonders what we have to show for 60 Years of Independence (19.26); Cel thinks we don’t highlight enough all the women who contributed to Ghana’s Independence (20.31) and AJ believes we should tell their story (21.29).

What’s popping? (1.24) Vee brings Hunter queen, Aisha Bakari into the limelight and the roomies gush about her bravery in the face of terrorist threats in Northern Nigeria. Cel introduces benevolent sexism with mixed responses from the roomies. AJ agrees it exists (5.46) but Kess doesn’t see the problem with it (7.47) Moos suggests that everyone is sexist (8.39) Cel jokes that women can’t be sexist (13.53) but Kess disagrees (14.05). AJ questions Moos’ stance (16.27). Cel thinks benevolent sexism acts are self-seeking (17.45) The roomies have veered off and Vee tries to bring them back on topic (22.43). Vee thinks there are more extreme forms of sexism than opening doors (23.45). Moos answers a hypothetical creepily and gets Cel questioning life (29.15). Moos judges AJ (30.18). Moos and AJ decide to take it outside - so much drama! (31.24).
