Anything Goes is a sermon series based on hard questions about God, faith, the Bible, and life. These are real questions submitted by real people. In the first week, we answer the question "why does God allow his children to suffer?"
This week, we are diving into the parable of the four soils to learn more about Jesus' command to "make disciples!"

We were made to make a difference in this world, to not just exist but to transform this world to reflect God’s goodness. When we align our lives with God’s mission, we become an unstoppable force for Him.
We were made for community, but community is hard. God has given us direction about how to thrive in community and find the freedom that he designed us for.
The world tells us that we need to earn what we get or fit the part to belong. But Jesus flipped that script on its head. In God’s Kingdom, those who don’t belong are the ones who find their place.
Jesus teaches us that the Holy Spirit is part of fighting back against the world. But he does it in a very particular way.
Both moments and process are important to create a meanginful life. In order for us to experience transformation, we need moments of the Holy Spirit filling us. Only through the Holy Spirit's presence can we experience the life that God wants for us.
The Holy Spirit was directly involved in Jesus, from his conception and throughout his life. What we learn when we look at the Holy Spirit in Jesus' life can change how we experience the Holy Spirit in our own lives.
Since the beginning, mankind has lost the battle to sin over and over again. Until Jesus. Jesus triumphs over sin & death - and invites us to share in the spoil.

In order to embrace what God has in store for us, we have to give up an individualistic plan for our lives. God’s purpose for each one of us is found in the massive mission he has initiated to transform the world.

We don't just commit sins. Every human is born with a nature that is corrupted by sin. Because of this corruption, we are all inclined to sin. But in the middle of our sinfulness, Jesus makes a way for us to find freedom.

It’s so easy to justify unforgiveness. Holding someone else’s sin against them seems far less significant than what they did to hurt us. But Jesus is clear: we don’t receive forgiveness from God unless we first forgive other people.

Sin is spiritual death, but we justify our sins. We explain away our sin and pass the blame. But we can't hide from God. If we want to stay in close relationship with God, we must own up to our sins and turn back to a God who loves us.

We all need more of God. But most of us are not cultivating a hunger for Him or actually seeking more of Him. Many of us are content where we are. Others of us feel like we’ve tried seeking more but it hasn’t worked. But God’s will for all of us is to keep seeking more of Him until we find it.

We are afraid to expect too much from God. But Paul’s letter to the church in Ephesus shows us that we can’t expect too much from God. He will consistently outperform our expectations, if we open ourselves up to his love.

Many of us are discontented with our lives. We aren’t where we wanted to be. We aren’t with the person we want to be with. We aren’t as successful as we want to be. Discontent can destroy our lives. But it can also be the catalyst for what God wants to accomplish in us.

Integrity is the quality of actually being who we say we are. In our lives, integrity is challenging to sustain. But God has given us a tool to create and keep integrity in our lives. The tool is often painful, but it works. We have the choice whether to use it or not.

Psalms 1 confronts us with two groups of people. One group is useless and weightless. The other group is productive, steady, consistent, and flourishing. The difference comes in when we receive our insight and guidance.

God has built an alert system into our lives. This internal sense alerts us to the brokenness of our lives and our need for him. We can ignore it, but it’s hard to totally forget. When we listen to what God is telling us from our past, we can walk in freedom in our future.

Life is often mundane, disappointing, and random. The Spirit-led life described in Acts seems exciting, powerful, and fulfilling. How do we bridge the gap between our normal lives and what's described in Acts? Paul's time in Corinth shows us that there's so much more to the Spirit-led life than miracles and prophecy.

Followers of Jesus are expected to share the reality of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection with people far from God. But sharing the gospel is daunting, awkward, and easy to ignore. Faced with a decision, Paul received clear instructions from the Holy Spirit about what he should avoid and what he should pursue. We can receive the same clarity from the Spirit about what we should do. But we need tp learn from Paul's life so we can be ready to receive that kind of clear direction. Passage: Acts 16:6-10

The early church faced its first internal crisis over the question of whether non-Jews must be circumcised to be saved. This question had serious implications for Christianity (and gentile men!). The tension culminated in a meeting at Jerusalem. What was decided has forever shaped our faith.

Paul’s mission led him into times of hardship and suffering. And he expected the same things to happen to other followers of Jesus. The Bible is clear that the gospel of Jesus is accompanied by hardship. How have we missed that truth and why do we struggle so much with it?

Satan means "accuser." He ignores our identity in Christ and defines us by our past. He accuses us to tear us down. But Jesus is our advocate. He defends us and speaks on our behalf. Jesus was the only Righteous one. Through him, we can find a new identity and safety from Satan's accusations.
Everything good in your life is from God, and Satan wants to destroy it. Satan hates your physical existence and will do whatever he can to end you. But we are not defenseless against him. God has given us a weapon that will make us capable of withstanding whatever Satan tries to destroy.
Satan wants to be ruler of everything-- that is his motivation. The people of God are God's treasured possession, so we have a target on our back. Satan will use our weakness and our pride to destroy anything good that will happen in or through our lives. Our only hope is to remain rooted in Christ and humble before God. When we let God fight our battles, we will be victorious.
Satan is the Father of Lies. He twists and warps our understanding of reality. He attacks our trust in what God has said to bring confusion and death. On our own, we have no way to combat Satan's schemes. Only God's word can bring clarity and life. The Sword of the Spirit is our strongest weapon against Satan's deception.
