This follows similar laws that have been passed in Colorado, Washington, and New York City. The California Bill also adds the requirement to provide salary ranges to current employees upon request and for employers with more than 100 employees, to provide a pay equity report annually showing average wages by job category comparing gender and ethnicity, which is a first for any state but is in line with many countries (most in the EU) which have a pay equity disclosure requirement. The first-of-its-kind annual pay equity reporting poses a series of questions and decisions for employers across the country, as many have a significant presence in California.

Join Michael and Robin on 4/28/2021 when they discuss Employee Resource Groups and how to make them more effective with Cassie Whitlock, director of HR at software company BambooHR. An answer for workplace inclusivity in the past has often been affinity groups or employee resource groups (ERGs). Need more women in leadership or initiatives more LGBTQ+ friendly? Make a group for that.
Cassie Whitlock believes that while there’s an opportunity for ERGs to provide value within an organization, they’re not an end-all solution. At some point there becomes a scaling issue -- a group can’t be made for every possible delineation. And on top of that, ERGs can inadvertently exclude employees, creating the opposite desired effect.
ERGs can have a positive impact -- it all comes down to how they’re structured and if there is an internal locus of control and employees feel empowered to affect change. Here are the core elements Cassie believes companies need to focus on when creating/refining ERGs:
Establish a clearly defined purpose for each ERG that are aligned with a business need, and actively work toward that purpose

She was offered a position and started as a part-time bank teller and worked in various lines of business before moving to VP, Diversity, and Inclusion in less than 5 years. Ashley recently celebrated 18 years of marriage to Whitney and together they have two biological sons; Bryce, 15, and Blake, 13.
Since beginning transitioning in 2008, she has worked tirelessly to promote awareness and acceptance of gender identity and expression. She works to accomplish this goal by volunteering in the community and holding education sessions for corporations. She serves on the Corporate Advisory Council for the NGLCC-National LGBT Chamber of Commerce. Also is the co-chair for NGLCC’s new global Trans+ Inclusion Task Force. She chaired the successful bid to host the NGLCC convention in 2019, and Visit Tampa Bay named her their Tourism Champion for 2017. In 2018, she started serving on the board of the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts. In 2019, she was voted on the National Board of Directors for GLAAD. GLAAD works to accelerate acceptance for the LGBTQ+ Community through media advocacy.

Evidence reveals that the #MeToo movement has not been a catalyst to move men to action in their organizations, but rather it has instead increased the likelihood of them avoiding women entirely, exacerbating gender inequalities.
There are, however, many men eager to learn how to really move the dial on inclusion. They are GOOD GUYS—they just don’t know what to do, or how to get started on their own ally journey.
David G. Smith Ph.D., a sociologist, and former Navy pilot, and Brad Johnson Ph.D., a psychology professor, guide these men in their new book, GOOD GUYS: How Men Can Be Better Allies for Women in the Workplace (Harvard Business Review Press, Oct 13, 2020). Based on their major qualitative study, they detail what excellent male allyship looks like and how to apply interpersonally (at home), publicly (at work), and systematically (through organizational change).
GOOD GUYS also reveals some of the obstacles men face—many of them don’t perceive gender inequities in the workplace at all (it’s hard to fix what you can’t see) and that men are unsure of how to take action (so they decide not to) and some see think any gains for women would mean losses for them.

In their new book LEADING WITH GRATITUDE: Eight Leadership Practices for Extraordinary Business Results (HarperBusiness, March 3, 2020), they explore why gratitude is today’s most effective way to boost employee engagement and team performance, and key gratitude practices that boost team performance, morale, and ROI, while reducing turnover.
Based on a survey of more than 1 million employees at a wide range of companies (and decades of experience with leaders), the authors identify a “gratitude gap” where people feel unappreciated – and often under attack – at work. They found that leaders are often unclear on how hard their people work, challenges they face, and how much they would benefit from sincere and explicit gratitude.
On the show, the authors can explain why gratitude is one of our most misunderstood business skills, and outline eight (8) ways leaders can gain clarity on how people contribute, including:
● Assume positive intent, which makes it much easier to learn from setbacks;
● Walk in their shoes to understand their daily frontline challenges with one-on-one time;
● Look for small wins and recognize incremental progress, not just major milestones;
● Tailor feedback to each staffer, because rewards that excite some can alienate others;

Working together, Chad and Tom are saving In-Line Packaging more than $200K in health spending. At the same time, Chad was able to increase employee incentives, rival with larger competitors (like Volvo and Boeing), decrease employer liability, and cover 100% of the cost of primary care.

As the two-year anniversary of the #Metoo movement arrives, only 15% of women believe that the movement has had an impact on their workplace, career, and opportunities in general, according to a nationwide survey conducted by Have Her Back Consulting, a women-owned and led culture consultancy.
The findings suggest that despite culture’s demand to advance equity for women, few companies have actually taken specific actions to change corporate culture. Perhaps most telling, 55% of respondents said the impact of #Metoo has been felt more on society and culture, while only 28% said it has had an equal impact on them, personally.
According to respondents, very few companies have taken actions to counter the issues that #MeToo identified. When asked what initiatives their employers have verbally committed to, 37% of respondents said “sexual harassment training” followed by 31% who said, “nothing.” When asked what actions were actually taken, 37% of respondents said “nothing” and only 28% said sexual harassment prevention training programs were conducted in their workplace.

It’s hard enough to get a job and if you have a disability, your chances are even worse.
A new study found that employer misconceptions and stereotypes contribute to the extremely high (83%) unemployment rate for people with disabilities.
The fact that 96% of people with disabilities have an “invisible disability” that’s not readily seen, combined with employer uncertainty on the cost of employing these individuals, contributes to inaccurate stereotypes. In reality, employees with disabilities bring new perspectives to the workplace and may actually save employers money.
Telework, the common go-to solution, isn’t as easy as it seems. Almost half (45%) of employers surveyed require a probationary period that prohibits telework.
Mary will offer tips for employers to crush these barriers and create a disability-friendly work culture.
