Jesus cautions and reminds us that it’s easy to do the right and good things for all the wrong reasons.

There is a propensity in all of us to do the right things for all the wrong reasons. This is especially true in the church. This isn’t just at the giving level – in chapter 6 Jesus identifies 3 important practices he assumes we’ll do: give to the poor, pray, and fast.

In short Jesus is teaching us how to not be religious

Redemption City Church is built around the idea of practicing the way of Jesus, together, for the renewal of the city. We believe that to be an apprentice of Jesus is to order your life around three goals: be with Jesus, become like Jesus, and do what Jesus did. Our dream is that as we live this way, our lives, our communities, and our city, will be transformed.  Our prayer is as Jesus prayed, that God’s will would be done in Boston as it is in Heaven.

We live in a time of history when it's never been easier to listen to the best content in the world, and yet to do almost all of it with a complete lack of accountability. We listen to sermons as entertainment. We have access to the best and latest teachings regarding Jesus and Scripture.

But the point of all of this is for you and me to become like Jesus by obeying Him. The Sermon on the Mount is a call to more information but transformation from the inside out.

We don’t know how much longer this pandemic, and the accompanying social unrest, will last. We were all hoping that by the beginning of 2021 life would start to return to normal. That, clearly, has yet to happen.

So, here’s the question: How do we not just survive the coming season – but rather come out the other side of it with a new inner strength and fortitude, and above all, spiritual formation in the the person of Jesus?

Is there a way to travel this road of pain together with joy?

Join us as we pause to reflect this past year and begin looking forward with joy.

In Jesus’ time, making promises one could not keep was prevalent. Lack of integrity was seen as something acceptable and Jesus says lack of integrity has no place among God’s people. Jesus taught that if you say you are going to do something, do it and if you can’t say no. Live with integrity. Thats it. Simple, profound, but so challenging.

Attitudes about marriage in culture have been shifting in a downward trend and is disappearing fast. There are many reasons for this. One reason among many why people choose not to get married is divorce. Many come from divorced backgrounds. Others have parents in a bad marriage and many don’t want that life. Whatever the reasons are for not getting are not always for godly reasons but broken ones.

What does all this mean for followers of Jesus? How do we interact with the realities of marriage in a broken and fallen world? How can we commend commitment in an age of divorce?

We live in a sex driven society. The church has responded to it in one of two ways: condemnation or accommodation. The problem with condemning or accommodating views regarding sex culture is that it assumes we are passive victims of desire, and in both views it places all blame for our struggle “out there” in the culture. Jesus’ words on from the sermon on the mount offers us a more nuanced view.

All the warnings in the Bible about sex are designed around the idea that sex is good and the warnings are there to protect something that is powerful and fragile – it is not designed to suppress freedom.

One of the things Jesus teaches is that calling someone a fool/idiot is closely related to anger, in that it represents a destructive attack on one’s character and identity. Jesus warns us that the person who violates another person made in God’s image in this grievous way is liable to the hell of fire. Followers of Jesus are commanded to treat others with dignity and respect rather than giving anger a place in our human interactions, especially with other Christians. All devaluing of people has no place in the kingdom of God.. How do we respond to Jesus' ethic of honor in the midst of a shame and outrage culture?

So many Christians don’t know what to do with the Old Testament or how to apply it. Sadly, this results in having a low view of the OT and thats unfortunate because Jesus loved the OT and because in it we see the very character of God.

If Jesus is who he claims to be, then his opinion should be very influential in shaping our own. Jesus had a high view of Scripture that included all of the Old Testament. He loved and obeyed it. Like Jesus, followers of His are called to the same care and ethic.

Perhaps this year, more than ever, you need no convincing that the world is not right. You can’t really long for the better world Jesus promises until you admit the messed up parts of this one. Advent is a chance to do this. The word “advent” means “the arrival.” In advent we wait for the arrival of Jesus not as a baby but as judge who will come to make all things new…the one who will restore our humanity. Advent is an invitation for you to slow down and reorient hope around Christ.

Habakkuk discusses the doubt and pain we feel when things go horribly wrong. But it ultimately explains why God allows us to experience pain, suffering and doubt. In short this is a book for those that struggle with God. And truth is we all struggle and need grace.

We took a break from the book of Ecclesiastes to consider the cultural moment we are in. We are living in one of one of the most divisive times of our country and while the country seems to be fracturing, the church has to remain a place not defined by the politics of the day but by hope in God who restores and renews His people. Still, how do we make sense of the political madness we find ourselves in and what is the way forward for the church?

Living well in God’s world means recognizing that when it comes to our own lives, we are not mini-gods, and this is his creation, not ours. Our life is given to us and things come and go and seasons change, and it is only God who knows exactly where everything is meant to go, in which order, at what time, and why.

Ecclesiastes 1-2 teaches that only God gives to us enjoyment and satisfaction in life. Endless enjoyment does not come in a box, does not come from sex, it is not the key ring to your dream house. We all know what it’s like to have tasted the best life has to offer and still be left wondering what comes next. God has to give us enjoyment, or the thing itself (box, sex, house) will leave us unsatisfied.

If we won’t live forever, or even long enough to make a lasting difference to the world, how then should we live? It takes the whole of Ecclesiastes to answer that question – the argument is cumulative and we need to allow the Preacher to give us the answer bit by bit, like an artist painting a canvas – here is the 1st answer: Accepting death is the first step in learning to live

Acts 3 is the first instance of a miracle, and if you understand this miracle, in a way, you understand them all. This miracle shows you how God feels about suffering in the world and what he’s doing about it, and what he’s saying to us in that suffering; and it shows us, as the church, what our mission is in the world.

In Acts 2:42-47, we get a sneak peak into the everyday life and rhythms of the early church. Quickly, we see that Christianity isn’t a call to find ourselves, but to lose ourselves in him and to learn to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. When the church is comfortable and cultural – she tends to be weak. When the church uncomfortable and countercultural – she tends to be strong.

Acts 2 tells us the story of the church and how she was born. In this teaching we explore both necessary of means of the word and power if the church is going to exist in the world today.

View Details

Since it’s inception, Christianity was never popular or accepted in the broader culture. Christians were seen as ‘bizarre’ ‘weird’ ‘outlandish’ ‘repellent’ The overall culture resented Christians and its beliefs. Yet the church flourished because it refused to accommodate to culture. It flourished because it was distinctively different.

This is why we need Acts to help us understand our place in this culture and God’s purposes in this world. We need Acts to teach us that our convictions must run deep…

We need a Vision that is not based on fear or survivor mode – but rather a rich presence in our own time that inspires the beauty and possibility of Christ’s church. The good news is that the church has advanced and borne beautiful fruit in cultural situations much more complex and challenging than our own

The advancement of the KOG does not depend on the cultural situation we find our selves in nor upon our performance. Rather – the book of Acts invites us to follow the way of Christ in His great redemptive work in our time.

What makes life meaningful is the beauty of Christ. Proverbs 8 is about God giving us a whole new way of seeing everything.
