Straight Talk with Dean and Marc: Recent Episodes

Marc Lee

“Straight Talk with Dean and Marc" is a podcast that touches many aspects of our society ranging from politics and social justice to entertainment and sports. We feature guests from various backgrounds who motivate, encourage and provide tools to pursue goals and dreams whether those dreams are entrepreneurial, corporate or personal. The show is hosted by Marc Lee and Dean Geronimo.

Here's what some of our past guests are saying about the show....
It's people like Marc that care about the little guys like me that make the sun shine and the flowers grow. Listening to his podcast has become the high point of my week..... Cliff Latshaw, President at Newbasstone.

It was a delightful, interesting, and fun interview that felt more like a conversation with an old friend as Marc Lee and I talked about the book and related topics and swapped a few stories. Dean pitched in some comments along the way. Peter Davidson, Author.

As a guest on the show, I enjoyed the conversation about the connection between science and art, between activism and Afrofuturism. Marc has been a longtime friend and supporter of the Arts, especially regarding blues music and film, and it was easy having this conversation. Dean carried us down the road with his politically informed charm. I look forward to being back on the show to pick up where we left off and to carry us into what Sun Ra would say, The Spaceways! Darrell Stover, Poet and Educator

You have such a wonderful radio voice and a great demeanor with your guests on your blogtalkradio show "Straight Talk With Dean and Marc." I had fun talking with you about my new book "Dear Passenger: Welcome to My Wacky World as a Flight Attendant." I hope all our friends tune in for an entertaining time. - Elizabeth Calwell, Flight attendant and author...

Juneteenth represents a moment in time when freedom was delayed for a large group of people. In times where society is pushing back against injustice, how do we create space to celebrate and acknowledge victories? How do we build the capacity to connect with our inner selves and with those around us? How is art a perfect medium for healing and reciprocity?  We sat down with Jen Bloomer artist, activist, facilitator, and the founder of Radici Studios to learn more about art as a community healing experience.

Do you do what you say you're going to do? That's what we're going to talk about today, the power of follow through and accountability through your say:do ratio. This little idea has a huge impact on how others experience you in work and life. And until recently, like I said, it was kind of my Achilles heel.

"No.  This is not my husband's company...I built it from the ground up!"

In this episode of the Reinvention Road Trip podcast,  you'll meet my friend Shelley McPhatter,  founder and CEO of Bridgeport Construction a multimillion dollar construction firm in Durham, NC.   She's a mom of three with an ocean engineering degree and a new found love for investing.  On all accounts, she defied convention and waded through self-doubt to jump off her comfort cliff into a male dominated industry.

Shelley successfully scaled her company to over 20 employees and 25 Million dollars in annual revenue in seven years, and earlier this month, she was inducted into the NC Women Business Owner's Hall of Fame.   Ya'll,  the kicker in all this...she's in her 40's!

If you need a boost of "girl power" and a reminder of what we can do as women, you'll get it in this episode.  Shelley takes us behind the scenes and tells us how she navigated the messy middle - reinventing herself time and time again!

What does justice look like if we are allowed to contribute everything we are to the communities we’re part of? The skills, tools, and processes needed to maintain community are social-emotional learning skills. Humans are innovative and we invest in the technology needed to keep our society going, but we need to begin to invest in human innovation, in the institution of the individual, and in the skills required to build deeper connections with others.

We sat down with David Adams, CEO, The Urban Assembly. David presents an opportunity to reimagine and dream while providing an educational equity blueprint. Our favorite quote from this conversation was: “It’s difficult to hate people you’re in community with. It's difficult to strip the dignity of a person that you’re in a deep relationship with”.   We encourage you to sit back, close your eyes and join us in pursuing a better way.

How is it that a plant that is so ancient with origins in Africa and Asia still persist in modernity? How can it be both a musical instrument and bowl...a water vessel and medicine? It persist because it is not just one thing and it has been cultivated to adapt to the needs of the user. The artist, the fisherman and the medicine woman all know that the calabash is more than a hollowed out shell. It is evidence of the beauty, power and healing in the mundane should you open your eyes wide enough to see what's in front of you. Dr. Sunyatta Amen, the owner and operator of Calabash Tea and Tonics knows that our plant world holds the same power and as a trained 5th generation herbalist, she is committed to cultivating healing through ancient African and Caribbean technologies. She is a quintessential market woman shapeshifter who has learned from the adaptability of the calabash gourd of Africa how to adapt, taking the shape necessary to heal her people and community with beauty, resilience and practicality---just like her ancestors.

Dr. Amen is the founder and Tea-EO of Calabash Tea & Tonic in Washington D.C. Amen is a Cuban/Jamaican 5th generation master herbalist, naturopathic doctor, and vegan chef. She grew up vegan, the daughter of activists (her mother was a Black Panther) that owned a health food shop, Pyramid Tea & Herbal, in New York City. This was the prototype for Calabash Tea & Tonic and where she learned the medicinal value of global teas, foods, and spices. Later, she would study biology and other sciences, combining her ancestral and western knowledge that she now uses to help heal city dwellers. Calabash’s extensive tea menu is the result of Amen’s schooling and the time-tested formulas belonging to her Jamaican grandmother. In this episode, she shares with us her journey as a healer, business owner and community activist.

The Brown Mountain Lightning Bugs officially formed in early 2016, and they’ve been bringing songs of joy, pain, and dogs to audiences ever since.

Combining their unique backgrounds that range from classic rock to classical guitar, they create a blend of original music with deep roots in the past and a contemporary twist here and there.

It’s our anniversary! (Thank you for listening)

This podcast started with a family discussion on schooling through an apocalypse. We learned however that this podcast evolved into our year-long journey and exploration into important discussions that families need to have. We hope that this episode like all of the others serves as an invitation to have more meaningful discussions about justice, civics, race, and wellness.

In this episode, we talk about how to cultivate a justice mindset in kids. We briefly discuss the Derek Chauvin verdict. We ask that our listeners please keep the family of George Floyd as well as the witness who filmed this atrocity, Darnella Frazier in your prayers. We also encourage our listeners to start and stop the episode and have a family discussion with us!

It's my birthday y'all!  So grateful for another rotation around the sun. So grateful for this 54 year old body that continues to carry me and teach me about how to love, heal and take risk to be more of who I am meant to be. I can't think of a better way to celebrate my birthday with our podcast listeners than to share this delicious bonus episode! My dear brilliant and super talented sister of the heart, Lana Garland*, is a filmmaker, producer and the curator/director of the Hayti Heritage Film Festival (see website below). She invited me to moderate a conversation between the Black Girl's Guide to Surviving Menopause and show writer Shannon Houston and award-winning actress Aunjanue Ellis of HBO's Lovecraft Country for this years festival. WLana also gifted me with the audio from this conversation that I want to gift to you to say "thank you" for your support of this podcast platform that unapologetically centers Black voices and stories as we navigate menopause and aging. You are so appreciated!

Lovecraft Country, the tv show, is based on a book of the same name written by Matt Ruff and book is considered dark fantasy. The name Lovecraft is derived from an early 20th century horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, who was also a self professed white supremacist. It’s set in 1955 Chicago and begins with inviting us to join a quest. This quest is being led by the male lead character, Atticus played by Jonathan Majors (also known as Tic), who has recently returned home from the Korean war. He is searching for his father and seeking to learn and reclaim his birthright...access to and dominion over the magic that exists in his bloodline--his ancestral legacy. The entire show is stunning and it is the storyline of Hippolyta Freeman performed so impeccably by Aunjanue, Tic’s aunt and episode “I Am” that took my and the breath of some many others away.

With two full length releases under his belt, a festival all his own, and his band’s 10 year anniversary approaching, it’s hard to believe that songwriter, guitar prodigy, and event producer Andrew Scotchie hasn’t even hit 30. On his latest studio venture, the Asheville, NC native packs a punch with six new tracks that boast some of the most electrifying arrangements you’ll hear all year.

Brady Jacquin is a singer-songwriter from Asheville, North Carolina. Drawing from influences like Fleet Foxes, Mumford and Sons, and Matt Corby, his band's unorthodox style fuses acoustic and electric guitars, pianos, different percussion types, extensive harmonies, intricate finger picking, and pretty much anything else he can get his hands on! He extends this fresh approach to his lyrics as the imagery serves to lose the listener in his world (a strange world, though it may be)!

Racism shows up everywhere and we are beginning to acknowledge how that impacts different groups, but most importantly we're starting to see the benefits of working collectively to address racism. As we work together to end marginalization and discrimination, we must remember that the AAPI struggle fits into the larger push for a more just and anti-racist world. This requires each of us to work across racial and cultural groups to end oppression, racism, colorism, and xenophobia targeted at any individual or group of people.

How do we build that capacity? How can we support the Asian and Pacific Islander community during this time?

We sat down with history educators Angela Lee, Karalee Wong Nakatsuka, Stacy Yung, and Virginia Nguyen, to discuss how we might combat hate, acknowledge hurt, engage in healing, and cultivate hope as we support our Asian and Pacific Islander family, friends, students, and colleagues.

“As a culture worker who belongs to an oppressed people my job is to make revolution irresistible.”

Toni Cade Bambara

When my sister and I were little girls, we developed a skill set to be present in rooms with my mother and her best girlfriends without being detected. If we could be quiet and not make any quick movements, we could have access to the world of older Black women and bear witness to the magic of their friendship and sisterhood. We called it ear hustling. The ear hustle was a skill that improved with age and was also foiled quite often by the super human listening and motion detecting powers of the adults in our lives. My sister and I couldn't wait to be old enough to sit in that space, with these women we loved and be full participants in conversations around life.

We are so excited for the first episode of Season 3 of the Black Girl's Guide to Surviving Menopause to be an intergenerational conversation co-hosted by Aja Taylor and Cherizar Crippen! In this episode, Aja and Cherizar interviewed social justice advocate and activist Makani Themba and I about our experiences with menopause, sexual expression, intimacy and getting older. This intergenerational conversation, provided a space for exploration, connection, laughter and reflection.

Born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida by musical parents, Stephen Evans naturally had the desire to perform music.  He began by making his friends watch him perform to records of his dad’s band, Four Saints. He progressed by playing the trumpet in various school bands, singing in the choir, and performing in musicals.

In his 20’s, Stephen was inspired by his brother, Scot Evans, who was the bassist/vocalist in the regionally successful band, Floating Men, from Nashville, TN.  So Stephen started his own rock band, Mean Season, in the late 80’s where he began honing his songwriting skills on the guitar.  After a few years of local success and radio play in Tallahassee, FL, the band moved to Atlanta, GA to increase their success.  Unfortunately, the band broke up, and left Stephen to try his hand at performing solo around Atlanta.

Once upon a time in the budding music-mecca of Asheville, NC, a man with a trumpet, an acoustic guitar and a mission metamorphosed into the synergistic soul/indie-pop band, Hustle Souls. With 2 ½ years of touring under their belt, the band’s feel-good, modern meets vintage sound, have earned them a reputation as one of the region’s most promising independent acts.

Lead singer and keyboardist, Billy Litz’s rootsy influences and vulnerable compositions are embroidered, garnished, and decked out by a powerhouse soul band. The rhythm section, Tommy Moore and Sean McCann aggressively usher in a tight jazz and R&B influence, while guitarist, Chris Everett, brings the group to the next level with his rock-ribbed feel.

In 2017 the band was approached by gold and platinum mixer and producer Eric “Mixerman” Sarafin (Ben Harper, the Broadcast, Pharcyde) about making a record which has set the ball rolling at a different pace. Hustle Souls’ eclectic sound will soon come together on their debut full-length album, “Color.”

Though some might find this topic  "challenging" or "uncomfortable", living with racial stereotypes is also challenging and uncomfortable. This is a conversation worth having. We recommend that parents consider that younger children (0-7) may not be able to understand some of the themes discussed in this episode.  It is however important that if kids are online they are often exposed to racist content and concepts and that should always be discussed.

Twin sisters, Katie and Corie Pressley, were born and raised in the Appalachian mountain community of Brasstown, North Carolina. They are affectionately called Chatter and Chitter on their mother’s popular Appalachian blog Blind Pig & the Acorn.

The girls enjoyed a musical influence literally from their arrival home from the hospital. Jerry Wilson, their grandfather, who they call Pap, was a musical legend in their neck of the woods.

Jerry performed for many years as part of The Wilson Brothers. The duo performed gospel music in the polished high harmonies of the classic brother duet style. They performed at churches, festivals, homecomings, and benefits throughout the south. Over the years they won many awards including the 1998 North Carolina Heritage Award. They were also featured in publications such as “The Old-Time Herald”.

The girls often tell the story of laying in their bedroom floor with ears pressed tightly to the floor to hear the sounds of music flowing up from the basement as Pap and his band practiced. Katie says “Mama would make us go to bed but as soon as the lights were out we’d sneak from the covers, lay in the floor, and let the music lull us to sleep.”

The Pressley Girls began singing in church with other children and gradually began to sing alone with Pap accompanying them on guitar. At about the same time, Corie and Katie joined the John C. Campbell Folk School Clogging Team.

“There’s a unique dynamic going on in the music of Asheville, North Carolina singer/songwriter Kathryn O’Shea. As a writer, her songs tend toward the confessional or autobiographical, the type we most often hear accompanied by an acoustic guitar. But O’Shea’s husky, low-toned moan is buoyed instead by her skeletal banjo playing.”

-The Greenville Journal

Known best for her hauntingly poignant lyricism and masterful vocal play, Kathryn has been featured by Sofar Sounds, WPVM Radio, WNC Original Music Podcast, and more. Last fall, she opened for the internationally renowned Los Angeles-based artist Terra Naomi at 7 Stages Theatre in Atlanta, then moved home shortly after and placed 2nd overall in the 11th annual Brown Bag Songwriter’s Competition at The Asheville Music Hall. Kathryn is currently recording her debut studio EP with M.G. O'Shea, a talented audio engineer who just so happens to be her big brother. Last summer, the two worked together to produce Kathryn's debut single, “Snow."

Nora Dicker, Assistant Director from the Straight Talk Support Group joins us tonight.  They have a transitional house for offenders returning to the community.

Ms. Nora Dicker is the Assistant to the Executive Director at STSG. She grew up in Chapel Hill, NC. She has always had a passion to help others. She went to Indiana University where she got her Bachelors in Social Work with a minor in Spanish. While at school, she worked at an emergency shelter for survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking. Ms. Dicker was part of the Crisis program, and enjoyed working in crisis situations. After graduation Ms. Dicker volunteered on the crisis line and provided childcare for the Compass Center in Chapel Hill. She appreciated the opportunity to work with survivors but also wanted to be able to explore opportunities working with justice involved individuals and prison reform. Through looking into organizations that work with people involved with the justice system, she was connected to STSG. Since beginning at STSG, Ms. Dicker has been able to organize the donation of bicycles, laptops, art materials, and some gardening supplies!

Reverend Curtis Gatewood also joined the discussion.

Monika Odum is 50 years old with her roots growing from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Germany where she was born, raised and lives. She has a 33yrs plus work life as a nurse in a variety of backgrounds, mostly on the ICU and is currently teaching at a nursing school. When I was in my late 20s, I felt like I was going through a tremendous identity shift and growth spurt. The shift was from a more conventional aspirtationally bougie identity of my early 20s to one that was seeking to find my authentic self. The self at home in this body and understanding the origins of my culture beyond these shores. I was a single mom, working full time in the non profit sector, had stopped relaxing my hair (i.e. cut off my hair and was growing my first set of locs) and was seeking a spiritual path and practice that was more African in nature. From the outside looking in, old friends and some family members were perplexed, confused and some were concerned. I can tell you that my mother was worried about me. What was I doing? Why was I changing in a way that looked so different? Who was I becoming and would there still be room for our connection and love? I assured her that this growth was not an abdication of my love for her, our family or our community. It was just more me trying to find and love more of me. All of me.

Join Virginia Interfaith Power & Light for a discussion on the human right to water as a policy priority for VAIPL. Learn more about how local communities have been impacted and why the right to water is important for all Virginians

GUESTS: Leah Jones, VAIPL Community Outreach Coordinator and Kidest Gibre, VAIPL Communications & Education Coordinator

As this long year comes to a close we would like to look forward to the new year and think about the changes that we would like to see, especially as we approach the 2021 General Assembly in January. At VAIPL, this year we are advocating for various environmental justice issues including energy burden, modernizing transportation as well as the human right to water. Today, on this episode of ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE NOW! we would like to talk about earth’s universal solvent, the most important resource to all living things on earth-- water. As many of us use water every day without an issue, it is easy to forget that on a global scale having clean water is actually a privilege.

THE GET RIGHT BAND is “hip-shaking, earthquaking pure funk fun” (The Alternate Root). They are one of Relix Magazine’s “On The Verge” picks, Home Grown Music Network’s 2015 “Best New Band of the Year,” and were voted “Best Progressive Band” in Western North Carolina by Mountain Xpress readers. They have performed on the famed World Cafe, a nationally syndicated NPR show, and have brought their unique sound to major festivals and venues such as FloydFest, The Orange Peel, Music City Roots TV Show, The Green Parrot, Arlene’s Grocery, and Riverbend Fest. Combining catchy, clever, honest  songwriting with musical expertise and fearless improvisation, the live show promises to move your head, heart, and hips.

Originally from West Virginia, KOLE grew up in a musical family alongside his 5 younger brothers and sisters. He received his first major break at age 15, performing with Lacey Sturm, of Flyleaf. This would catapult him into pursuing a promising career in music. At age 18, he moved to California and began performing as a drummer gaining success in just a few years. He then decided it was time to focus on writing music for other artists and bands. This move would lead him back east to Pittsburgh where he eventually would meet a young producer, Caleb Thomas. Together they began to create the first major project of his career. KOLE's nine track LP titled CaH20, is set to release in 2021.
