As part of Goat Farm's new Furniture Lab initiative, Nikki Starz constructs a sculpture that appears to be a pile of pillows but is solid and sturdy enough to handle the Goat Farm's residents.
With the help of Tian Justman, Stephanie Clayton Bennett, Addison Adams, John Cable, etc... Nikki uses a variety of materials to coat and solidify the pillows into a furniture installation right outside the Warhorse Cafe.
Chris Childs (Hello Ocho/Faun and a Pan Flute) debuts “\ˈsīlən(t)s.” a three movement work for chamber orchestra.
Chris talked with us about the drastic change in dynamic from playing with a band to conducting a 27 piece orchestra. We also get a bit of insight into the two year process of creating “\ˈsīlən(t)s.”, as well as a sneak peak into some of the rehearsal sessions.

The High Museum's Wieland Family Curator Michael Rooks discusses the current Sprawl! show and two of its contributors, David Baerwalde and Ashley Anderson. Baerwalde and Anderson, both Goat Farmers, talk about having their work added to the High Museum's permanent collection.

This summer, the High will present its second major exhibition featuring recently acquired works on paper by Georgia-based artists. A sequel to the successful 2013 exhibition Drawing Inside the Perimeter, which featured work by Atlanta-based artists, Sprawl! will include drawings by artists who live and work in Atlanta and other cities in the metro area and beyond, such as Athens, Columbus, Decatur, Lawrenceville and Smyrna.
The drawings in the exhibition act as a roadmap exploring the broad diversity of artistic production and approaches to art-making in Georgia, and the featured works also demonstrate both the overlapping spheres of influence and divergent interests and priorities of the artists.
Thanks to Michael Rooks for his time and help with this episode. Special thanks to Marci Tate of the High Museum for her help in coordinating.
Music for this episode provided by the lovely people of Little Tybee and their album For Distant Viewing. Special thanks to Goat Farmer Brock Scott. http://www.littletybee.com

We spoke via Skype with Severn Eaton, half of the Jam D Jam duo.
Jam D Jam is a response to a contemporary dilemma shared by all Atlantans, rush hour congestion throughout the city. This radio based interactive entertainment intervention will invite participants to use these moments to contribute to an ever-changing soundscape. Calling in from their vehicles, their unscripted words or noises of frustration, boredom, aggression or anxiety will be transformed into musical invention & looped back to the traffic, the public, the performers. EMC's will be working with a diverse set of Atlanta music makers and producers to collaborate in sampling these unpredictable recordings.
A multi-story, multi-location projection project that grows in scale, run-time and complexity, this project invites people to explore the communities and histories of different areas of the city. The content for each story will be mined from the location where it is to be projected. The stories will be simple, open & experimental. Filmed from a unique aerial perspective moving from the city scale to the human scale using a heavy-lift remote drone that Stansell's team built from the ground up. The project will culminate in a fourth location that wraps the built environment in narrative. All four stories will weave together, producing a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. This project, introspective & anthropological in nature, will provide an inverted view of Atlanta's sprawl, moving from broad to narrow, focusing in on the human elements of the city. The aleatory form of storytelling will guide Stansell's team towards collaborations with participating poets & musicians depending on the content captured.
The Dream Collection Agency (DCA) is a corporate entity designed to collect, document, and recycle dreams. The Agency solicits public dream donations via an online Dream Depository and an in-store collection laboratory. Dream donations are cataloged and recreated in three dimensional digital environments using cutting edge 21st century Oculus Rift VR technology. Visitors to the storefront collection laboratory are invited to experience these documented dreams in a safe and secure virtual reality environment under the watchful eye of professionally trained Dream Technicians. "As virtual reality and other technologies become more widespread in the near future, we would like to begin discussing the implications of existing in both a physical & digital reality and at which point will we allow our hopes, dreams, and ambitions to become nothing more than a computer simulation. We would like to find out if this digital experience & corporatization cheapens or enhances our naturally occurring mental visions." – DCA

Site-specific architectural enhancements to mundane buildings and spaces in Atlanta. Buildings are planned and built to be anywhere. Therein, important factors of history, locality and place are in danger of being lost. This project offers an opportunity to reexamine the history & current identity of our city through the faces of its buildings using custom mass-produced parts that are adjusted passively by the environment – the place. Collins will be working with GA Tech University's School of Architecture, the Digital Fabrication Lab and a cross-disciplinary team of students. Envelope will take something ordinary, everyday and passed-by and, with thoughtfulness and experimentation, turn it into something unexpected, useful and beautiful.
A large-scale application of a grid pattern and vector fields, this installation will use a pattern of laminar flow to consider the human experience of moving through time and space. Scientific discovery is increasingly pointing toward an understanding of both time and space as fluid; altered by things such as memory, mass, consciousness, and distance. As technology persistently invades our time and redefines our space we may begin to feel an increasing insecurity about our connection to ourselves and the natural world. Flow Fields creates a massive Cartesian landscape within Freedom Park with the simple concept of direction as a tool for self-contextualizing and psychological mooring. Flow Field(s) emerged through ongoing collaborations between Wentzel and Dr. Joel Kimmons, a scientist at the CDC. Their current focus is in the area of behavioral design, work that has a continuous effect on the direction of this project.

Domination of Black Notes by Drew Baker
Years ago, while taking an accompanying class in undergrad, two of my colleagues were working on the Brahms Violin Sonata No. 1, Op. 78. It is piece that continues to floor me. Of the many astonishingly beautiful moments throughout, the piano chords at the outset have always been of particular interest. Brahms takes simple triads and voices them perfectly—the register, the spacing of the notes, the way those chords provide a buoyant cushion over which the violin melody stretches out—all of these elements combine to create something sublime.
In a way, I’ve been trying to live within the world of those chords for some time now. Brahms’ chords serve a traditional role in harmonizing a melody, and yet, is the melody necessary? More simply put, can chords, these monolithic musical creatures, rome free? // Domination of Black is taken from a poem of the same title by Wallace Stevens. The notion of a singular color exerting “dominance” reminds me of a James Turrell exhibit I once attended. For one of Turrell’s pieces, I entered a room that seemed pitch black. My eyes, however, adjusted and I realized there was a light sculpture in the corner. The darkness, once absorbed, provided a focus that illuminated so much subtlety. // Out of the window, I saw how the planets gathered Like the leaves themselves Turning in the wind. I saw how night came, Came striding like the color of the heavy hemlocks I felt afraid. And I remembered the cry of the peacocks.
(closing stanza to Domination of Black by Wallace Stevens)
