I coined the term chaotic foods to refer to products that have negative and unexpected effects on the body.

In this episode, I chat with nutritional therapist Louise Digby about her take on this topic, as well as sharing some revelations about processed foods that our conversation sparked in me.

Discover:

*Why diet foods can backfire so badly

*Why ultra-processed foods have zero nutritional qualities, but also why they promote overconsumption

*Why fat and carbs can be so addictive

*Why inflammation is such a problem - not least because of how people view it

*How these foods increase food cravings

*Why hormones are a scapegoat for other issues

*The effect sugar has on the menstrual cycle

*What Louise advises her clients to do re: artificial sweeteners

*The power of retraining your tastebuds

*Louise’s 80/20 nutritional principle

In this episode, I explore two very different real life type 2 stories.

In the first story, we meet Hannah, whose food intake was very much controlled by what I call The Inner Food Rebel.

I also interview a client of mine who in 6 weeks has dropped his A1C measure from 58 (well into type 2 territory) to 50 (pre-diabetes) and dropped 6 kilos. Find out how he achieved this.

There are four ways that Hannah and my client diverge. Four factors in their respective outcomes:

1: The Role That Food Plays

2: Control

3: All or Nothing vs Moderation

4: Possibly the most important factor of them all. Listen in to find out what it is.

The hidden gifts of diabetes? Are you bonkers, Harriet?

Well, no. This episode will give you a massive Aha moment as you turn your dread and fear about your health into a feeling that you can do something about this thing.

In this episode, I reveal three positives that you have probably never considered before about this condition.

Gift No. 1: It’s A Wake Up Call

Hear the shockingly hopeful stat that will power up your motivation to do something about type 2 diabetes. Make the choice that you didn’t know you have.

Gift No. 2: It Can Prevent a Heart Attack

Find out how (and try not to fall off your chair). These facts will blow you away - and maybe save your life one day.

Gift No. 3: The Unexpected One

The key changes that will reverse your type 2 diabetes - eating better, moving more and reducing stress - create real pleasure. This stands in opposition to fake pleasure which is a product of ultra processed foods, couch potatoing your way through the weekend and overstimulation.

Find out how you can tell the difference in this episode.

This is the second in this four-part series on Living Directly.

Part one is at https://eatingcoach.libsyn.com/ec-215-adventures-in-living-directly

The hidden price of processed foods is that they enable a mindset you long to be free of.

Another way in to this topic...

Is it possible for any food to stop you living directly - to numb you out and deny yourself a place at the table of really enjoying your time on this planet?

Answer: yes and no.

See what I mean in this short episode, and learn which belief is enabled by substances such as sugar and other processed foods

A series of four episodes focused on living directly. What's that got to do with food and binge eating, Harriet?

Living directly is much more engaging, sustainable approach to health than the traditional problem solving that the whole world has been brainwashed into.

It's making old wounds as irrelevant as a cut on your finger.

It's saying to life: I can handle the downs as well as the ups.

with the subject line GUT AUDIO

Q: What’s better than a New Year’s Resolution? A: Why, a New Year’s REVOLUTION, of course!

In this episode, I give you a total 180 degree change in how to approach health change at this most failure-prone time of the year that will revolutionise 2023 if you let it.

The gut is the subject of some rockstar cutting edge research, so why not have the best of both worlds - a huge improvement in your health AND leaving behind struggle?

Resolution smacks of push, push, struggle, do penance for your food sins and try to be a completely different person.

There are two guiding principles to make superpowering your gut health much easier:

#1 Focus on internal health and #2 Fall in love with the changes you need to make.

As I explain, this is very different from the shame-based external focus of most people’s January ‘do better’ efforts.

Julie says: “The 40 over 40 campaign is to empower woman over 40 and above, through beautiful images. There is no upper age limit! I want mature woman who have a story to tell or just want to be seen.

Maybe life has gotten in the way of how they see themselves. We lead busy lives and spin many plates and very often we put ourselves last before everybody else! The menopause hits and we suddenly feel invisible and don't like the we look and feel anymore. The connection to ourselves has become lost but, we are still that same beautiful woman and our loved ones still see our beauty even when we do not.

Through this campaign I want you to see yourself how others see you. I want you to really look at yourself and say 'wow' that's me! I am amazing!

I can bring out the inner you in different ways. Flirty, fun, sexy, bold and strong! You can be one of those or all of them. This experience is designed around and for you. With a mood board, professional hair and makeup, up to 5 outfit changes (I have some amazing gowns) style guide and beauty guide along with the fully guided photo shoot it is an experience not to be missed.

Once all 40 ladies have been photographed it will culminate in an evening of celebration. We will come together and celebrate our beautiful selves in style!

This episode is a follow on from episode 207 on your body as your long lost twin. Listen to that here:

https://eatingcoach.libsyn.com/ec-207-your-body-is-your-long-lost-twin

Today I talk about three ways to reconnect to that long lost twin inside you and make those important health and weight goals much more easily achievable.

Reconnection Point 1: Eating Presence

What is eating presence? Well, it’s slow eating, Jim - but not as we know it.

Slow eating has probably the same status in your mind as watching paint dry while being poked with a sharp stick - boring and painful.

No lie - it is uncomfortable. But in the same way that many of the great leaps forward in your life (getting married, becoming a parent, getting the promotion) involved discomfort, it is so worth it.

So what has eating slowly got to do with feeling more connected to your body? Well, when you are eating slowly, you are NOT eating fast - and speed eating is a surefire way to check out of your body. It’s as if you have to drug yourself just to sit next to your wounded self in the canteen of life. It’s like Back to the Future where George McFly is the wounded self, Biff the bully is the inner critic, and Marty (Michael J Fox) is the part of you that is eating slowly to sit by George.

Reconnection Point 2: Evolutionary Psychology

Evolutionary psychology is, in a nutshell, the part of our brain left over from our cavedwelling ancestors: our Cavebrain. Fight or flight is one example - you switch into lightning fast reaction mode if you see a dangerous driver or your child runs into the road.

The great news is that you can use your Cavebrain to feel more body acceptance.

Reconnection Point 3: Possibility Shifting

People have been in struggle for years and years around their health. Limiting beliefs are the culprit - but simply telling yourself to ignore them. The truth is that these beliefs are a faulty coping mechanism. In this episode I go into more details on this.

Join the free planning session for the 3x1 project on Tues 1st Nov 8pm UK/4pm EST (Note different time difference this week only)

https://www.theshiftinside.com/sessions/

The 3x1 Project is a one month, low maintenance way to slide a healthy new habit into your busy life - right under the radar of your self sabotage!

How many times have you started off with phrases like MASSIVE ACTION careering round your brain, high on your good intentions - only to be tripped up by your own resistance ……days later (you insert the number)

What if you accepted that resistance is a fact of life, and instead created a workaround that allowed you to make real, sustainable progress on ONE area of your health?

This is the 3 x 1 plan

One Seedling Change

One Structural Scaffold in your daily routine

Once a day track your progress and celebrate

This approach will teach your mind and body to act in spite of your own resistance AND FEEL AWESOME in the process. You will train your brain to get a hit of feel good dopamine from even small successes. What do you think is going to happen to your motivation? It will skyrocket. And your resistance? It will divebomb.

Top of many people's health goals is weight loss. The problem with this is that this perfectly useful measure of health has been corrupted by the diet and beauty industries, who have injected harsh unrealistic expectations into the mix, along with a nice toxic dose of body shame.

Actor Rebel Wilson's story around her weight loss departs from virtually every other celeb's yo yo dieting, and she has a lot to teach us about the difference between toxic perfectionism and healthy health goals.

There are two distinct reasons that I am guessing that underlie Rebel's sustainable weight change

Find out what they are in this episode.

Journaling for this topic:

Write down all the reasons you have to lose weight. Now put them in order of internal importance. For example, if you have written ‘to ease joint pain’ and then ‘to fit into my favourite dress’ then easing joint pain must come before the dress, because it impacts your life on a deeper level. Think health, think ease of movement, think what else you could do that you cannot nowadays.

Now look at the top and bottom reasons and notice if your motivation has shifted. Do you feel any better focusing on the most important item? Who else benefit from you easing this problem?

I would love to know what came top of your list, so please email me info (at)theshiftinside.com

The Cravings Anti-Challenge

https://shiftinside.vipmembervault.com/products/courses/view/1139918

Starring Albert Einstein, The Minions & your Inner Food Rebel. This free 3-day adventure reveals how even the most dyed-in-the-wool food rebel can disrupt their cravings and walk away from sugar - without willpower, self-discipline or even self-belief. Discover: * The strategy I stole from Einstein (no physics degree required) that sidesteps struggle and is a backdoor to saying no to sugar - even when you have zero willpower * What anti-cravings Minions are * Who your Inner Food Rebel is, and how to enlist their help to transform making healthy choices into kick-ass empowerment * How to channel Harry Potter to walk away from any junk food

What Is An Anti-Challenge? One of the main problems for compulsive eaters is that they are caught between two opposing energies within them (all this gets explained during the 3 sessions). One of these is their Inner Food Rebel. And there's nothing a rebel loves more than disrupting rules that are imposed onto it. And that is kind of the definition of a challenge! We are going to be craftier and more subtle than to try to dictate to ourselves :)

In anti-challenge, we ditch willpower and self-belief in order to tap into sit down for peace talks with our self-sabotage...while tying its shoelaces under the table!

Starts Monday 26th September This free anti-challenge is a mix of 3 Zoom calls and other materials, such as audio visualisations. Don't worry if you cannot attend all of the calls, because each session will be recorded.

Benefit #2 It stops you having to censor your life yourself (Which you do to avoid #1)

Heads Up

Here’s the link to access the talk on Carrot or Stick? Neither! On Wed 3rd August at 8pm UK (3pm Eastern)

https://www.facebook.com/groups/eatingcoachgroup

What is The Fundamental Fatribution Error?

I made this term up. It is a corrupted version of the fundamental attribution error (FAE), which is the mistake we make when we for example blame others' bad driving on personality defects, but if we cut someone up in traffic it is usually down to factors outside our control. Most people believe that they are above averagely skilled drivers.

The fundamental fatribution error (FFE) is when you weaponise the FAE against yourself, and is exemplified by self attack statements like "I'm so fat because It's so undisciplined"

In this episode you will find out why the FFE is so toxic AND so strangely comforting…as well as an alternative.

About The Carrot and Stick Talk on Wed 3rd August:

We all know about carrots and sticks when it comes to human motivation. Punish or reward yourself (or get someone else to do it for you) and you are sorted…right?

Wrong.

This Wednesday at 8pm UK (3pm EST) I will be talking about why I don't think either really work for stopping binge eating or freeing yourself from junk food addictions like sugar.

For anyone with a history of food compulsion, the stick will trigger their Inner Food Rebel, a force 1000 times more powerful than any goals you might set.

I have found that carrot does work SOMETIMES for me…but only under certain conditions. And it has never really landed with any of my clients.

So…what can we replace the carrot and the stick with?

Something deeper. Something that always works. Something that connects you to a more powerful way of living. Something that is totally transferable to other areas you need motivation for.

This talk will be live in the Eating Coach Facebook group. If you are not already a member, join here:

One of my favourite films is Arrival, starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. But it's not just a great movie - it is a brilliant metaphor for ending binge eating.

Adams plays Louise Banks, a linguist who the army have asked to help do a bit of translation.

Alien translation.

Yup, there's a egg-shaped UFO floating in the air, and it's all down to her to find out why.

In this clip, we see Louise take off her protective suit in order to really communicate properly with the aliens.

Everyone is freaked out, but no harm comes to her.

In this clip, the protective suit is emotional eating, and the aliens are life. The beautiful, messy, uncertain life you miss out on when you keep yourself finished via binges and junk food.

Louise takes a risk and realises she CAN get to know the aliens better.

Are you willing to take the risk of managing your life without food? What might your life look like without food compulsion?

5 Minute Appetite Suppressant Session This Thursday 28th July

Get access here:

https://www.theshiftinside.com/sessions/

Imagine if there were an appetite suppressant that was 100% natural, with zero side effects.

One that is also a digestive aid and can help reduce stress.

The only drawback is that you need to sit and do nothing for 5 minutes while the pill takes effect.

Oh yes, and it's free too.

Q: Would you take it?

A: Why the heck wouldn't you? Something 100% natural that makes you eat less, with a price tag of £0.

At this point you may be thinking: What's the catch, Harriet?

And there is one - but it's a catch in the same way that you need to learn to read in order to enjoy The Harry Potter series.

A 'catch' that you'll be glad exists.

Ok, so the catch, the big reveal - is that this appetite suppressant is….

Slow eating.

Ta-dah!

Confused? Disappointed?

Yes Harriet, I’m Totally Confused What if I told you that eating fast blocks satiety (fullness) signals to your brain. Your stomach can’t really know it has had food if it’s coming in too fast - and your body cannot properly digest and use the nutrients in the food if you have not chewed it properly.

This is a bit like a quiet drink in a cosy pub that suddenly gets overwhelmed by 20 party goers. How well would you be able to get to know each of the new arrivals?

Yes Harriet, I’m Pretty Disappointed What if I told you that eating fast puts your body into a state of stress, which triggers the release of cortisol - the fat storage hormone which is responsible for millions of people's central obesity AKA belly fat.

Central obesity is one indicator that you could be starting down the path to type II diabetes.

So maybe the point of slow eating is to avoid eating your way to a big tummy and a big health problem down the line.

Now, what if I told you that there was a easier-than-you-think way to get started with this thing that you assume is too hard and undervalue in order to justify your perception of its difficulty?

The answer is to get started in five minute increments.

The answer is to turn slow eating into a game, thereby removing all the pressure.

The answer is to leverage the power of a tribe to motivate you.

The answer is to attend The Eating Coach Zoom session on Thursday 28th July at 8pm UK time. It is free, but there will be no recording. This is only for people who take the trouble to attend. It is a highly experiential session. (Can't make it? Email me info (at) theshiftinside dot com - as I can re run this session if there is enough interest).

In it you will….

  • Understand the science behind why slow eating is such a powerful appetite suppressant and digestive aid, not to mention anti-stress technique

  • Discover two simple and fun slow eating games that work with zero effort on your part

What you will NOT have to do:

No need to eat slowly for more than five minutes

No need to eat on camera (you can turn it off if you like - your choice)

Bring a piece of fruit or salad veg (eg apple, banana, cucumber, celery etc), a plate and a knife

This session is free. If you already get my Note From emails, there is no action to take - I will remind you and send you the Zoom link in good time.

Otherwise, fill in the form to ensure you get the Zoom link. This will not be posted in the Facebook group.

“This is the greatest moment of your life, and you’re off somewhere, missing it!”

Guess the movie this quote comes from.

Now guess the lesson it has for you reclaiming your life from food.

Thirdly, guess what that quote has in common with this one from Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince:

“It was, he thought, the difference between being dragged into the arena to face a battle to the death and walking into the arena with your head held high. Some people, perhaps, would say that there was little to choose between the two ways, but Dumbledore knew - and so do I, thought Harry, with a rush of fierce pride, and so did my parents - that there was all the difference in the world.” No idea? Then listen in and I will reveal all.

Pop Quiz:

#1 Would you give a five-year-old Tolstoy's epic War and Peace as reading homework?

#2 Would you ask the office junior on their first day at work to present to the board of directors?

#3 Would you get a learner driver to tackle a Formula One racetrack?

No, no - and once again NO!

So why do millions of people regularly do the equivalent in terms of managing their health and weight?

War and Peaceing your health means taking steps that are far too advanced for you.

In this episode I talk in more depth about this, and give an alternative.

You've heard of dinner dates, right?

But have you ever thought about dating your dinner???

You: What madness is this, Harriet?

Me: This quite ludicrous title hides a very powerful shift that is the foundation for this work.

It is highly likely that for a long time you have been in a parent-child dynamic with how you eat.

Basically this involves the diet being the strict parent and the dieter being the naughty child who cannot be trusted to make their own food choices.

Looking to a diet or personal trainer or ANY external meal plan for instructions you must slavishly adhere to in meal planning and eating is to risk putting yourself in the naughty child role - because too often these meal plans etc are sold as temporary escapism.

Think: lose 10lbs in a week and so on.

No human (except those giving birth) can do so sustainably.

Instead, we are going to EXPERIMENT with trying new ways of eating. Think of me as a matchmaker, helping you find the best way to eat for yourself. If I was a dating coach, my job would not be to force my idea of Mr or Mrs Perfect onto you, but to help you meet someone who is good for you, but also that you want to date again.

Cheers now

Harriet

PS I will be in the Eating Coach Facebook group tomorrow (Wed 13th) for a new weeklyfeature - talks called What Really Works Wednesdays. I'm going to talk about something called the parent - child dynamic that is at the heart of so many compulsive eaters' food issues.

The Eating Coach is back with a series of short 5-6 min episode for your pleasure during the month of July. Today: How junk food is an anaesthetic (as well as being damn hard to spell!).

Check out the Facebook group where I will be posting more content. https://www.facebook.com/groups/eatingcoachgroup

Many people understand that emotional eating is trying to do the job of managing life, a bit like a sticking plaster or band aid.

But what I have realised is that it serves a much more subtle and invisibly powerful function - that of an anaesthetic.

If you've ever come down from any kind of high (be it from food or overstimulation) and used a takeaway to fill that emotional gap - you are using food as an anaesthetic.

If you binge because you are dreading the meeting with person X - you are using food as an anaesthetic.

If you use sugar as dutch courage before an interview in the same way alcoholics nip into the pub - you are using food as an anaesthetic.

The question is - does the anaesthetic ever work? If it did, then you would have renewed vigour, boss that meeting and ace the interview - you would be more confident with the help of food.

Of course not.

No anaesthetic can ever do more than a temporary job. That's what they are meant for. Great for dental work, rotten for emotional eating.

So the question to ask yourself before you anaesthetise yourself via the deli aisle is this:

Is it worth it?

The Eating Coach podcast is back and in this episode I have two more questions you can ask to alienate yourself from that anaesthetic.

Cheers now!

Next episode out within the next few days

In this episode, I interview Lindsay, one of my clients, on her experience putting emotional eating out of a job.

In this empowering chat, you will hear about…

*Going from feeling like a broken sugar addict to being able to say no to dessert at a big social occasion

*The awesome question (starting with “What does….”) Lindsay uses to bring herself to alignment with her higher self

*The shift from eating 7 pieces of wedding cake to not even wanting the junk after taking a bite of it

*How quitting sugar changed her relationship with herself

*Lindsay’s PCOS diagnosis and the link with binge eating

*The awesome rebel-against-your-food rebellion strategy I taught her and how it meant saying no to sugar was actually FUN

*How this work gave her the confidence to quit another addiction

The daily practice of shifting from passive sufferer to hero/ine's journey mindset

How to put a gagging order on your inner critic

The counterintuitive power of low commitment and gamification

Discover how junk foods hijacks your brain chemistry

Practise eating a nutritious AND pleasurable diet that will elbow the mood-hijacking junk out of the way - without you feeling torn between what is right and what feels good.

How to use The Staircase Approach to transition from the addict's dependence to nutritional, craving-free eating.

Emotional Regulation Difficult emotions have been demonised, and it is also these feelings that trigger compulsive eating. Is it possible that there is some link between suppression and bingeing? Hint: Yes there is!

Learn how to use the emotions as messengers reframe as a positive constructive scaffold for managing them.

Step-by-step processes that support you in learning how to manage your feelings.

Dealing with anger and guilt: safely channel and release what you should not be holding on to. Imagine what a weight off that will be!

In today's episode, we look at the second major component (as well as emotional regulation) of freeing yourself from emotional eating: Eating Presence.

In a nutshell, Eating Presence means eating nutritious food slowly.

It doesn't mean being perfect and trying to turn yourself into a poster girl/boy for low carb/keto/paleo/no dairy/no sugar etc etc.

It means aiming for the most nutritious meals possible, while still allowing pleasure.

And it means eating them consciously.

In this episode I go into detail about what Eating Presence means in the real world, and we hear from on of my clients and how it has helped her.

Imagine a postie (mail delivery person if you live outside the UK) who delivers a parcel to your home, and invites themselves in for a cuppa. Ten years later they are still there, drinking you out of house and home…

A ridiculous scenario, but if we replace the postie with difficult emotions you have a situation that millions tolerate, simply because they don’t know how else to manage their anger, disappointment, guilt etc.

When you can learn to regulate your emotions yourself, you reduce 50% of your emotional eating issues….or should I say ‘stuck emotional eating’ issues.

Emotions are messengers, and never meant to stick around. AND they are not meant to be solved.

An interview that makes no mention of food – yes, it’s true! I interview artist Catherine Rains and I wanted to bring you this interview because I extracted so much wisdom from it. Catherine is an amazing human being who has lots of life lessons that will put food out of a job.

At the end of the interview, I discuss two areas relating to compulsive and binge eating that what we talked about

#1 – Non-verbalising feelings

#2 – the difference in language between us. I referred to the victim, where Catherine talks about ‘the child’. How much of the shamed child lives in you, one who is carrying shame that doesn’t belong to her?

Highlights

“Double-pronged non-resistance”: while continually affirming the job she wanted, she was at the same time embracing the job she had.

How to be unintentionally intentional

The five words anyone can use in a negative situation to feel more empowered

Catherine’s epiphany about non resistance

The non linear nature of change.

How she diverted her energy to sidestep jealousy and intended her way to the job of her dreams

Why affirmations don’t work for so many people - because they are doing this thing alongside the affirmation

Her strategy for releasing fear and dread after her cancer diagnosis (I have never heard this from anyone else)

How she developed compassion for her husband in the midst of her divorce but still shielded herself from his manipulation

Her hilarious way of managing old resentments

Today I present a completely biased review of Whole 30. Biased? I hear you cry. Isn't that meant to be UNbiased?

Nope. I am completely skewed in favour of recovering binge eaters finding a programme that empowers them, that helps them start to trust themselves again. One that allows them to proceed at a doable pace, and build confidence as they go. This diet in sheep's clothing is not it. Read on (or listen to the podcast episode below) for more information and what the alternative looks like.

What Is Great About Whole 30
It increases awareness about all the fake natural sweeteners out there, such as agave nectar
A lack of focus on measurements, although it seems to be very happy with before and after photos, which are problematic.

Problems With Whole 30
#1 It tries to do too much, too fast.
This is not just a misguided issue that is borne ourt of well-intentioned ambition. It is a cold, hard profit-driven strategy that leverages compulsive eaters desire to escape themselves via a temporary transformation.
It is very, very hard to give up a multiplicity of foods that you are addicted to all at once and make that change sustainable. I think the clue is in the name. No wonder it’s not called Whole Forever.

#2 it Demonises Certain Nutritious Foods That Actually Reduce Compulsive Urges and Cravings
Quinoa. Lentils. Brown rice. Ah yes, how silly of me not to see that they need to placed in the nutritional sin bin with high fructose corn syrup, candy cigarettes and deep fried everything. Really? Really?

#3 Fruit Juice Is Permitted
That’s right, kids. Lentil soup is verboten, but something with more fructose than Coke is OK. Listen to the podcast episode above to hear what Dr Robert Lustig has to say about fruit juice and type two diabetes.

#4 It’s Based on Original Sin
This criticism is something that Whole 30 shares with just about every health fad and diet out there. You are broken the deprivation-fuelled edicts silently imply. You can chase that bad guilt and shame away with this nutritional hairshirt. Escape yourself in only 30 misery filled days! That is one whole month of your life you’re never getting back.
If you’ve been using food to manage your life, trying to leverage guilt over past mistakes is not only unkind to yourself…it’s downright impractical.

#5 It Denies Pleasure
Just because you may have eaten chaotically and got extreme and fake pleasure from food does NOT mean that misery and deprivation is the counterbalance. Pleasure is a core human drive, and if you deny it, your primitive Cavebrain will take over and make sure you get it via more binge eating and other unhelpful knee jerk responses. Bye bye Whole 30.

#6 It Sets Up a Parent-Child Dynamic With Food
Listen to the podcast episode to understand exactly what I mean here.

Alternatives To Whole 30
If nonsense like this programme is not the answer to your food compulsion, then what is? Here are some pointers.
*Curiosity

*Experimentation – which gives you data and is impossible to fail at. In the episode, I give a concrete example of how this plays out.

*Learning to relax enough around food to get real (not fake) pleasure from real food

*Imperfectionism

*Being present with food, instead of using it as an escape route from self

In this third part of my series on addiction, I tackle the question of why some foods are just so addictive….or as I want to rephrase it, just why is it so easy to feel compulsive about certain foodstuffs?

Brilliant Idea of The Week

is Focusmate. Find out more at
https://www.focusmate.com/

Main section

Just exactly why are some foods are just so addictive is actually 2 questions:

#1 What is it about some particular foods (their ingredients, the way they are processed etc) that can encourage compulsion?

....and

#2 Why do we feel compulsive about some foods in the first place? Why do human beings feel they need to manage problems with food at all?

#2 is a more empowering question, because it turns us from passive victims into responsible beings with the power to change our lives.

"A core part of addiction is, I think, about not being able to bear to be present in your life" ~ Johan Hari

Many people don't believe that they can manage their overwhelm and shame - but they CAN.

Is this a problem for you? In this podcast episode of The Eating Coach, we dive into this topic - one that I have not heard discussed often. I talk openly about my own anxiety around my appetite, and what happened when I actually decided to experience hunger intentionally. I was very surprised at what I discovered.

Part One: Why You Might Have a Fear of Hunger

  • Childhood experiences. Food was used to give adults power over you.
  • Food as a way to Numb yourself out
  • In both scenarios, hunger can act as a very persuasive PR tool being used by your child rebel or the part of you that feels it is essential to numb out
  • I managed overeating a long time ago, but lockdown created a very powerful PR for my compulsion because I was doing too much. I dissolved Some key relationships which created lots of fear. I perceived genuine hunger which was not always genuenuine. about managing my life

Part Two: What Happened When I Faced My Fear of Hunger

I realised that hunger is not a fire, it is a tide

I realised that hunger is plastic

I discuss the role that ghrelin (the hunger hormone plays) here and the evolutionary reasoning behind the plastic nature of hunger

Part Three: Over To You

Ideas for you to get going on your fear of hunger

In this episode, I take inspiration from The Hunger Games series, where hunger is used as a tool to control the people.

What if hunger is not what you think it is?

What if you are unconsciously using hunger as a tool to control YOUR life?

In This episode, I talk about

*How fear of hunger was an invisible force I used to oppress myself for years

The concept of restrictors vs permittors – how i used health fads. My fear of hunger and how it manifested

*What purpose fear of hunger REALLY served for me

Starring George Mcfly

*How some foods create their own hunger ecosystem

I talk about processed carbs as an example here.

*What happens when humans allow themselves to be hungry

Surprising evidence about how this is not only good for us, but easier than you think.

Part two of this topic follows in a week’s time.

Have you ever heard anyone ever say "No, thanks, I don't actually like bread"...? Nope, me neither. Taking a tour of not only the Sugar Rollercoaster, but the Neolithic age, The Roman Empire and The Hunger Games, let's take a peek at the fascinating and surprisingly shocking hold bread has on the human race.

A replay of episode 53.

Stupid Headline of The Week

No Gluten, No Dairy, No Joy

Main section: Why Is Bread So Addictive?

A short preface on gluten intolerance - the symptoms.

I then have a discussion on if we should change the word 'addictive' in the same way I want us to replace 'addiction' with compulsion'?

There are 2 reasons why bread is addictive.

Reason #1 relates to white bread. Being a source of highly refined carbohydrate, it triggers the production of glucose and consequently insulin into the blood stream. It is this regular emergency response, the call for insulin that can lead to obesity, type II diabetes and a host of other health problems.

Reason #2 is less well known. You probably know that bread contains gluten, but have you ever heard of gluten exorphins? They have an opioid effect on the brain and can cause spontaneous behaviour. Compulsive binge, anyone?

Fascinating factoid of the week: The roman empire used bread to subjugate the peoples it was dominating

https://www.theshiftinside.com/freed/ - Boundary Setting 101 Week starts on 17th May. 3 masterclasses - all completely free.

Possibly the worst titled episode in the history of this podcast. It makes you feel out of sorts just looking at it, doesn’t it?

…and that’s the point.

A TionQues is a question that is all wrong, just like the way I have spellt that very word here.

When you do something that causes you pain, like bingeing, the questions you ask yourself about it are absolutely key for the quality of solutions that you tap into.

The problem is that people often do not know what the RIGHT questions to ask are.

The TionQues you might ask yourself post binge are:

How can I make amends for my terrible greed?

How can I escape myself?

In this episode I give you some better questions to ask.

Is the concept of loss when applied to weight. Find out why it is a stupid verb to use in this context, and what to replace it with

Food Lies
Let’s look at some of the untruths we deceive ourselves in order to continue diminishing our lives with compulsion, and how we use food as a really understandable invisible cover story for deeper issues.

Find out:

  • The difference between a lazy and safety cover story

  • The difference between the lies you tell yourself ABOUT food and how food ITSELF can be a cover story - a deeply self-critical one that masks a far more neutral, compassionate truth. Don’t you want to discover what that is?

Welcome to The Shame Starvation Diet: The only regime in the world with no set meal plans, but offers side effects like freedom from deprivation, feeling awesome at last AND reclaiming your life from food AND stupid toxic guilt!

STUPID IDEA OF THE WEEK

Diets and wellness programmes that tell you exactly WHAT TO DO. Your Inner Food Rebel will not stand for that AND they are a breeding ground for toxic shame.

THE SHAME STARVATION DIET

This is divided into several sections

#1 How food can be used to manage shame

-The difference between appropriate and inappropriate shame

-How compulsion expresses instead of proves the ‘truth’ of shame

  • guilt vs shame

  • The double function of compulsive eating when it comes to toxic shame

#2 What Is The Shame Starvation Diet

-Definition

-Discussion of dealing directly with issues so you do not have to use food to deal with them vs shame that cannot be exactly ‘solved’

#3 Actions Change Beliefs

If you take actions that disrupt what your toxic shame is telling you is the truth (even though it’s a lie), you start to change a negative sense of self.

  • An example is given with meal planning
  • How your favourite film can help this process

In 2018 I did an intermittent fasting experiment. In this episode I discuss my recent learnings from a new experiment I have been doing, as well as listeners’ views on the matter.

I discuss if this mode of eating is restrictive or freedom giving.

Listener quote

‘IF has so many options, that’s what works so well, it’s finding what works with your circumstances. It’s endlessly flexible, this removes the common feelings of failure that are a part of ‘diet plans’. If you have an opportunity to enjoy food and company, just change things around.

I don’t know that there is one person who has ever fixed the problem, it’s a matter of management over a lifetime, a lifetime that you want to be enjoyable.’

IF EXPERIMENT – W/C 15th February

This is two-day experiment that will take place on Tuesday 16th and Thursday 18th February. If you want to move the two days you are welcome to, but be aware that there will be some Zoom calls so you may want to do this alongside others/

Be aware that it will also require some preparation time.

This experiment has been designed for anyone who is interested in intermittent fasting (IF) but has misgivings or questions about its workability, especially if you have a history of compulsive eating.

You are also welcome if you have some experience with IF and are looking to optimise it or try out a different approach.

How It Works

You can do the experiment alone, or join the Zoom and/or Facebook group. This will open on Saturday 13th Feb.

There will be a Zoom call on Monday 15th at 8pm GMT where I will answer any questions you might have. I will also share some ideas on the experimental mindset and how important this is

Day One is Tuesday 16th February. On this day, you are going to try IF on this day anyway you like. You choose the eating window and what foods you eat.

I will lead another Zoom call on Tuesday at 4pm then again at 9pm GMT, when I will release the 3 guidelines for Thursday’s IF day.

Day Two is Thursday 16th February. On this day you will be following 3 guidelines that I will release on Tuesday evening. These are the guidelines I use myself and have found to be very user friendly for any recovering compulsive. You then have Wednesday to get ready for Thursday, in terms of buying and preparing food. I suggest setting aside 60-90 minutes on Wednesday, although you may not need all of this time. NB You do not need an hour and a half a day for the rest of time to implement my IF approach ! Hurray! !

There will be a third Zoom call on Thursday at 4pm and again at 9pm to wrap things up.

What do you do when you not only fall off the wagon, but’s disappeared round the corner and a world-wide motivational wagon shortgage has  just been announced?

The answer: Imperfectly does it.

We need to give ourselves leeway when it comes to making change…while avoiding the trap of complacency – the ‘just do what you can’ get out clause.

This episode finds a healthy and inspiring middle ground between harsh perfectionism and lax apathy that fits perfectly with the Heroine’s Journey thinking described in the previous episode.

Last episode was all about practical strategies to reduce binge eating this Christmas. Today is more philosophical. I want you to consider if you have been pitting the festive season against New Year, with Christmas as the pantomime villain and your New Year’s Resolutions (NYRs) as the heroine?

The time to think about this is not 1.1.21, but right now.

What kind of heroine did your NYR turn out to be in 2020?

Here’s an alternative: How about a mental ceasefire? What if your binge eating of late December was not actually your defective shadow side? What if you could step aside from that whole compulsive Christmas vs polish-your-halo January?

Food for thought indeed, plus Stupid Idea of The Week gets taken over by Documentary of The Week (zero yuletide jumpers involved, I promise).

Last epsiode on reducing Christmas binge eating

View Details

https://www.theshiftinside.com/masterclass/ has all the details for my upcoming masterclass on stopping Christmas binge eating - 13th December.

How to stop Christmas binge eating? The answer to that is that you ask a very similar, but subtly different question. One that will empower you to do exactly what the title of this week’s episode is seeking.

It is very important to avoid being perfectionist about this. Isn’t that what has got you into that painful binge-restrict cycle before?

Harriet! How do you know me so well?

A: Because I was you. For almost three decades.

This episode is divided into 4 sections

THE PROBLEM

Your problem with compulsive eating at Christmas is NOT that you lack willpower and all that food is so hard to resist. The issue is more complex, and far more interesting.

The real issue is that the festive season has become so overloaded with pressure to conform and somehow be good at Yuletide. Provide the best spread. Make sure everyone is happy.

For my clients, especially women over 30, bingeing is really a wake up call. Their soul will no longer tolerate being good little girls anymore, but they haven’t yet discovered a way to rebel against these unrealistic pressures directly,

So food becomes the fall guy.

Maybe this time of year is NOT the monent to face up to such existential questions. However, you CAN make things easier on yourself by understanding the true dynamic at play.

3 Strategies To Deal With Binge Eating At Christmas

#1 Replacements

...But not any old healthy snacks you have found in your local health food store. And neither will a boring old apple suffice.

Listen to this episode and find out the key distinctions you need to understand about replacements this Yule.

#2 Plan ahead

Planning ahead to deal with difficult situations is surprisingly effective. Listen to find out more

#3 Get some space

You need time for yourself, especially if you feel overloaded. The obviousness of this statement is not lost on me. The point I want to make here is that there is work to do for many compulsive eaters in actually allowing them that space.

The Barkley Marathons is regarded as one of the toughest endurance races on the planet. Why do I call it The Failure Olympics, and why does it offer a counterintuituve escape from failure?

Assuming you even get a place in this race, you are almost certainly guaranteed to not finish. However, the gift inherent in just participating is far more precious than the disappointment of the loss could ever be.

The Barkley Marathons is not only tough, but reaches levels of eccentricity previously attained only by English aristocrats such as Screaming Lord Such. 5 marathons in 60 hours. The entry fee is less than a cup of coffee, but you must bring a personalised present for the organiser. The trails are not marked and the combined altitude of all 5 marathons equals that of Everest. Only 15 people in 30 years have ever actually finished it.

So why do it?

And what has this insane event got to teach is about recovering from binge eating and food compulsion? So much - that’s what. Even if - especially if - you’d rather cut your arm off than run a marathon, this episode is for you.

Go to https://www.theshiftinside.com/stop/to find out about next month’s coaching programme for people pleasers who want to get their life back.

Have you ever stopped to consider that there could be a link between people pleasing and compulsive or binge eating?

In this episode, I explain what I believe the common root cause of both of these experiences is.

I also give you three ways to stop being so damn nice to everyone at the expense of your own self respect.

Quote of The Week

Comes from Rita Mae Brown

The Stop People Pleasing Coaching Programme - enrollment open now!

Do you long to accept yourself, but have no idea how to do this?

Would you like to develop emotional resilience and navigate life more powerfully?

Would you like to learn how to stand up for yourself and say no without being aggressive?

Do you want to build your self confidence in a real way, without having to fake it til you make it?

Would you like to learn how to put food out of the job of life manager?

Do you want to learn how to become the role model that you long to be?

Who Is This Programme For?

I have designed this programme for empaths.

An empath is someone who has a strong tendancy to soak up others’ emotions. There are many positive aspects to being an empath such as an ability to read people well and high intuition. However, most empaths are so weighed down by how their emotional sponge nature has taken over their lives that they fall into the habit of people pleasing, finding it hard to say no and stand up for themselves.

The aim of this transformative 8 weeks is to shift how you are showing up in the world by learning to rein in these disempowering behaviours and start playing to your strengths.

How The Programme Works

This programme has two separate strands.

#1 The Empath Sessions

Managing your empath nature, self acceptance and how to start showing up in more powerful ways so that life becomes rewarding instead of draining for you.

1 x 90 minute session a week over 8 weeks

#2 Eating Psychology Sessions

Put food out of the job it was never meant to do.

This part of the programme comprises 4 x 90 minute sessions that give a solid foundation of how to eat better using the principles of eating psychology. You will dive in and try out doable food-rebel proof changes that are not too extreme. These changes have been shown time and again to reduce cravings and binge eating. We look at the HOW of eating, which is a hugely underrated part of reclaiming your life from food. I devote a whole session to sugar and give you some practical ways to free yourself from those little white granules.

IMPORTANT: If you have worked with me previously, or you do not have eating issues, you can choose to omit part 2. The programme fees will be reduced by 25% if you opt to just attend the empath sessions

This is a replay of episode 12 on Robin Williams. 6 years on from his death, one of the world's favourite comedians and actors is sorely missed - but there are also many lessons we can draw from this famously troubled funnyman's death.

The mystery magician in this episode is Derren Brown. I was reading from his excellent book 'Happy'. Get the audiobook free when you sign up for a 30 day Audible trial at http://www.audibletrial.com/EatingCoach - just search 'Happy' - or any other of the 180,000 titles to choose from for iPhone, Android, Kindle or mp3 player.

In This Episode:

Stupid Idea of The Week

This week I tear apart claims like "with added vitamins and iron" you see on children's cereal. All with the help of a chain smoking babysitter and insane PE teacher...

Robin Williams: A Lesson

"We would be doing his life and memory a disservice if we did not extract some wisdom from his choice" wrote friend and fellow actor Peter Coyote after Robin Williams' death. But this is not the whole story. Williams' early demise was not actually the result of depression. Find out what actually was (if you don't know already) as well as the unusual teaching from Robin Williams' situation that speaks to eating issues - as well as living a better life.

To think about:

*Is there really always something we can do in the face of our food compulsion, especially when it feels immoveable? Is that not a bit polyanna?

*If so, what would that look like - as well as the mental shift that accompanies it

Special treat: what your ego sounds like. I have an actual recording of it!

STRESS EATING

In today’s episode, I talk about stress eating through a rather unusual lens and help you do a 180 on how you see it.

By the way, if we are taking about stress eating, we are also talking about binge eating – because they are one and the same thing.

Have you ever considered that stress could be addictive?

I explain how this could be true, and give you a reframe for stress eating

And if so, does this change how you see stress eating? Ould this coping technique be a way to deal with a situation that you yourself have unconsciously created in order to release stress hormones?

I also give you a practical alternative to eating as a stress relief that you can do today. You can’t say fairer than that!

“I binged because I felt like I deserved a treat”. I have heard this sentence come of the mouths of clients many, many times.

In today’s show I talk about the meaning of treats, and I give you some questions to ask yourself to unpick this mystery.

Mystery??? I hear you cry. Listen on….

Treats are not bad – however they can be used as a hidden tool for self-sabotage.

#1 Treats are cover stories for ‘this is the only way I can get pleasure in my life’

#2 Treats offer pleasure – but with a huge pricetag

I offer some really useful questions to help you distance yourself from the possibly perceived dependence on treats as a coping mechanism.

…Starring The Failure of Willpower and a bright red pair of knitted shackles… Have you ever considered that there might be hidden opportunities – hidden in plain sight, no less – to reclaim your life from food – opportunities that are available to you 24/7, but never more so than now, as we start to ease lockdown in many parts of the world. BRILLIANT IDEA OF THE WEEK

A few days ago, the statue of Edward Colston, the slave trader, was ripped off its plinth and thrown into Bristol Harbour. This is not brilliant idea of the week – why not? And if not, what is? And what has all this got to do with binge eating?

MAIN SECTION

This episode begins by discussing how one of my group coaching clients, Helen, used one of our strategies to discover some unexpected and empowering changes in her life.

However, the period that many of you are entering now – the easing of lockdown restrictions – presents some incredible opportunities to reclaim your life, not just from food, but from all the burdens you are carrying that really don’t belong to you.

This is a discussion that encompasses slow eating, the limits of willpower…and a bright red pair of knitted shackles.

Q: When is an operation not actually an operation? And when does an operation have some rather unexpected consequences? A: Listen and find out. In 2011, I had a hypnotic gastric band. In this episode I explain what happened and the events that surrounded it. In this episode, I tell you all about it.

This experience was the beginning of my recovery from compulsive eating. But the $64,000 question was: how much of that was down to the hypnotherapist, and how much was down to what I did with the experience?

In this episode I share:

*What is a hypnotic gastric band

*The extra (some would say OTT) prep I did outside my sessions to make the ‘operation’ as real as possible to my subconscious mind (I don’t think anyone has ever been so committed as I was!)

*The odd thing that happened immediately after the ‘operation’

*The turning point two weeks afterwards – and the landmark three words that changed everything for me

*What Bear Grylls and a Victorian dwarf have got to do with all this

Watch that your earbuds don't burn off with the heat of this week's show! Yes, it is the the (ever so slightly bonkers) chilli challenge - and this is the woman who - up until last summer - would no more eat spicy food than retrain as an astrophysicist . I also talk about body hacking and biohacking. Hilarious Idea of The Week Ever wondered what to do if you were unfortunate enough to lose half a finger in a motorbike accident? Why, turn your misfortune upside down by transforming said missing digit into a USB stick. Yes, ladies and gentlemen.

Main section: The Chilli Challenge LIVE!!! A finger USB stick is bodyhacking - optimising (and I use term loosely) your body using technology. Biohacking is more about optimising your body using medical, nutritional and physical advances. The big, extreme biohacking invetions make big news - but I want to focus in this episode on much more basic, simple biohacking techniques you can implement today for virtually nothing.

The Chilli Challenge is one such technique. The point is that you eat more chilli than is comfortable for you in order to get an endorphin rush.

Listen as I take you through the discomfort and safe-for-compulsives high of the chilli challenge. Is it worth it? Only you can decide.

Today we are going to use Back To The Future to help you eat less compulsively in lockdown, and start shifting to a more empowered way of handling stress and food at this time.

I introduce you to the concept of the internal and external locus of control. This is rather like the introvert/extrovert divide – just as most people are not one or the other (they are ambiverts on a continuum), I believe that we live on a sliding scale between the internal and external locus of control. The trick is to shift towards one as much of the time as possible.

In the second half, I discuss how you can move from having an external towards an internal locus, using some real life examples from my recent virtual retreat.

Here is something you can do about your Coronavirus anxiety - immediately. If you give me five minutes of your time, I will give you an anxiety-calming tool that takes less than 60 seconds to implement. It costs nothing, and you can do this anywhere. You could even get away with this in the middle of a stressful meeting about COVID-19, and nobody will notice. It is not meditation, EFT or deep breathing. Before I explain exactly what this, let’s imagine anxiety as a merry-go-round (or should I say unmerry-go-round). Anxiety looks at a problem and circles it. Not only does it fail to respond to that problem, but it starts disabling your higher creative thinking, which is so vital when it comes to the complex problems of the world in 2020. Anxiety also makes you susceptible to the profit-driven hysteria of the press. Cue more anxiety. You never get anywhere with anxiety as your tool to deal with Coronavirus. All it does is let you fool yourself that your state of hypervigilance is justified. Of course we need to be vigilant with the present COVID-19 situation. What I am saying is that hypervigilance, which means fretting beyond what is useful, increases our stress levels to the point where we cannot respond effectively. This is when stress can start to put an extra unneccessary load on our immune system, which is something that everyone needs to have functioning as effectively as possible right now. Listen and help get yourself out of hyper-vigilant anxiety that you know is doing you no good at all. Today I interview health coach Jessica Romrell about emotional eating, which she defines as ‘using food to cope with or escape an emotion’

STUPID IDEA OF THE WEEK

…is the concept of being ‘too emotional’. This is a nonsense, and is expressing something subtly distinct. Find out what that is…

MAIN SECTION

Emotional eating is not about the food. Let’s get under the bonnet of this issue and go deeper.

We discuss:

  • The problem with willpower
  • What stress cycles are and how they impact emotional eating
  • Deconstructing and neutralising the shame around this issue
  • The two types of coping that Jessica recommends
  • What true self care is (clue: it’s not taking a hot bath!)
  • What habit stacking is and why it’s important

AKA Meditation for people who can't sit still...and a deeper exploration for the rest of us.

Are you one of those people who feel like they should meditate because they see gurus everywhere talk about it, but would rather stick pins in your eyes than sit down and close your eyes?

What you need is an intervention of the non-spiritual, non-BS variety. Today I talk to the only person who has ever got me to meditate, master coach Rob Scott.

STUPID IDEA OF THE WEEK

…comes from poet and playwright EE Cummins, all about belief and change

MAIN SECTION

In this interview, discover

*What the ten breaths challenge is, and the hidden benefits of failing it

*What beginners should focus on instead of time spent meditating

*The difference between thought and sensation – and why understanding this can start to dismantle compulsion

*How meditation lets you access the actual experience of being alive vs the thought model of being alive

*A definition of ‘being present’ that takes you from some 2D perfectionist social media meme to a real workable tool that will help you accept yourself

*The difference between pain and suffering – and why this is so important for your ability to manage your compulsion

“I’m going to build a house using only this hammer”

CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) is one of the most popular forms of therapy that people seek these days for a wide range of issues. Today we look at if it can help eating issues.

STUPID IDEA OF THE WEEK

Far be it from me to cast apersions on anyone’s truly healthy ice lollies…well actually, near be it because I, ahem, am doing just that. Ah, the creative engine that is reality TV…

MAIN SECTION (3 min 43)

Does CBT work for binge eating? And if so, does it have any limits?

CBT is a therapy that helps people identify and correct distorted thoughts than can affect their behaviour. And this is the really important thing to note here: in this approach, conscious, faulty thinking is at the root of behaviours such as binge eating.

The principle is that thoughts create feelings, which create unwanted behaviours, which in turn reinforce the thoughts.

I look at some evidence on this issue and give my opinion: where I see overlaps with my own coaching and what I see as its glaring inadequacies.

I talk about the invisible forces behind binge- and compulsive eating that could well escape a CBT therapist.

‘All natural sweeteners are equal; but some are more equal than others’ as George Orwell never said.

There is a massive difference between nightmares like the fake healthy-sounding agave nectar and what I have to recommend for you today.

Fortunately there is a great rule of thumb to use plus a handful of Eating Coach-approved natural sweeteners, so this does not have to be a complicated business.

Listen and learn in this highly practical episode.

Portion control is a great thing to focus on – but only if you have already got it. Virtually all clients, when they come to me, start off with lack of control uppermost in their mind. However, when they change their eating habits, they never rejoice “Control! I have control!” So what is going on here?

STUPID IDEA OF THE WEEK

…the Fridgecam. Why use your own basic intelligence when you can hand all your power over to AI?

PORTION CONTROL

We tend to think of control as a good thing, that it is the royal road to considered moderation. It is a great way to DESCRIBE a state of affairs where moderation is natural and unforced.

Control as a tool for change is however a disaster, because it is to us ideal as a tool for change.

Control wants to squash the external manifestations of control. This will not work if your compulsive overeating is fuelled by an inner rebel (created partly by the deprivation of diets and other forms of nutritional self-harm).

Control says ‘I don’t trust myself’ – in fact it is about using mistrust as a weapon against yourself.

In this episode, discover:

*A useful way to stop using the word ‘control’

*3 alternatives to portion control (14m 22)

*What teenagers have to teach us about this issue

*The A word that you can replace control with

*An eating game you can try today

Is it possible for any woman to start to accept and even like her body and appearance in less than a month?

This was the question I asked myself a few months ago when I became sick of being beaten down my poor body image.

I wondered whether I could go deeper and reproduce the success I had 7 years ago giving up sugar. I had to find a different way through that challenge than the cookie-cutter solutions being presented to me by everyone else.

And this is exactly what I have done with The Body Confident Project.

The key to gaining body acceptance – and gaining it relatively quickly - is Cavebrain.

In this episode you will find out...

*Exactly what cavebrain is and why it is absolutely crucial in this process

*Other women's experiences with this project

*Why this goes beyond being able to look in the mirror and is also about living a life that is both easier AND more empowered

NB Link to the documentary below...This is not just another review – in this episode I am going to not only talk about this documentary, but describe what the next steps are for anyone with low body confidence…which is just about everyone.

What do you get when you put reality TV, airbrushed perfectionism and cyberbullying together? A poignant portrait of how toxic body shaming can – well, let’s not say ruin someone’s life – because there is always hope…and actionable ideas that every woman can put into practice. Jesy Nelson of Little Mix fame tells the story of the cyberbullying she was subjected to even before she had won The X Factor and the start of recovery.

The question is…

What next?

In tomorrow’s extra episode I will be talking about The Body Confident Project and how this is the next step on from the awareness that Jesy and millions of women like her need to stand aside from their body hatred and stop trash talking themselves.

From “I can’t look in the mirror’"to “I look great” in less than a month…is it really possible?

Listen in and let’s see…

Today a Stupid Idea of The Week that does have a grain of truth about the causes of obesity. It is too easy to throw the baby out with the public health bathwater when it comes to OTT toxic nonsense. Yes, it’s Michael Buerk’s ridiculous anti-obese people rant. And yes, it does have something to push the debate forward…

Plus a partial replay of episode 28 from 2017: Own Your Food Compulsion.

WORD OF THE WEEK

…is Uncomfortability. This is more than discomfort, it is the ability to sit with discomfort and pain. Includes a hilarious quote from Stuart Wilde!

This is a follow on from episode 112 about how useless ‘The Secret’ and its ilk are. Today we look at a viable alternative to that nonsense: the REAL law of attraction.

QUOTES OF THE WEEK

Come from JP Sears’ video ‘The Law of Attraction Delusion’

MAIN SECTION

If ‘The Secret’ is the fast food version of the law of attraction, then we need a more nutritional feats that will sustain us mentally and see us through the inevitable unpredictability of life.

This episode answers one question: what happens when, despite your best efforts, your affirmations fall on deaf universal ears and your vision board starts going dusty with lack of manifesting?!?

To answer this question we have a orchestra and conductor on hand as well as Carl Jung. We look at the role victim thinking plays here, and what stuck stories are. The role that mystery plays.

Bonus episode. Nike installs a plus size mannequin in their flagship London store. Cue outrage from certain parts of the media and a backlash from the fat activism movement.

Who is right?

A better question is: how helpful is this marketing move to the average woman and man in the street, who feel bewildered by this controversy. They know the airbrushed perfectionism of size zero is toxic, but they do not know what to do with this opposite conception of beauty.

Join me as I try to find some middle ground in this debate.

Feeling guilty because you read or watched ‘The Secret’ and just didn’t manifest that toned new body well enough? Wonder what in the name of Rhonda you’ve done wrong as your beach body plan turns to binge baddy disaster?

Fear not, for ‘tis not your fault.

In this episode I tell you why I believe the law of attraction (in the form it is presented by books such as The Secret) is 90% drivel, 8% commonsense and 2% pure gold. I see this book as a superficial parody of an extremely powerful set of principles that can be the springboard for you to change your life.

Over the course of the next two episodes, I am going to

#1 Dismantle the nonsense and release you from any feelings of inadequacy you made have been experiencing trying to apply the LoA

#2 Give you an alternative that goes deeper and is far more realistic than the version that you have been attempting to follow – and that will be in the next episode, a fortnight today.

In this first part, I hope to achieve #1. We look at the two camps that have sprung up when this topic is discussed.

THE LIMITS OF THE LAW OF ATTRACTION

#1 It relies 100% on visionary thinking, which has a shelf life which can be veeeeeery short, depending on how great your resistance is.

#2 The snide and sneaky pressure to feel good 24/7

#3 The ‘Emperor’s New Clothes’ language

*Watch out for part two next time***

Today’s episode looks at 5 anti-compulsive eating actions you can take today – even if you don’t think you can stop yourself turning to food to manage your life.

You absolutely can.

STUPID IDEA OF THE WEEK

…is that natural automatically = good. We all know this is a bit of a nonsense, but how many times have we unwittingly fallen for the green packaging and exotic sounding ingredients list? Let’s dig into this most spurious of axioms.

MAIN SECTION

The idea for today came from me reading what could be seen as a pretty depressing statistic about eating. But like so much raw data, we can look at the information differently and turn it to our advantage.

Discover

*How to reduce the overwhelm of your cravings

What could be on the surface THE most depressing title of any episode I (or any other podcaster, for that matter) have ever put out is, in fact, a reason to feel less guilty, less disempowered and less down about your own binge eating than you might guess.

All will be revealed, with the help of some 70’s glam rock!

I talk about how modern life is setting the stage for evryone to be compulsive in many areas of life and the specific ways I see that manifesting, with eating and in other areas.

And I give you two great reasons to find some gold in this - how you can use this information to empower yourself to truly reclaim your life from food.

Can food really heal depression? And if so, is it all you need? Let's investigate...

STUPID IDEA OF THE WEEK

…is the the when/then game. We’ve all played it – and let’s face it, it’s total pants (as we say here in good ol’Blighty).

MAIN SECTION

In today’s episode I look at how what we eat can impact our mental health. As important as the information are certain caveats that you need to be aware of. The main focus is on what foodstuffs we can introduce to improve our state of mind and emotional regulation.

Included is an extract from my new audiobook Natural Antidepressants. You can buy it today (link below) or….

…alternatively you can hear it over two episodes (this week and next) of Eating Coach Extra – these are paid episodes that will be coming out every other week.

Be aware that the topic discussed is passive suicidal ideation – thoughts such as “I just don’t want to be here anymore” – as opposed to a definite intent to take one’s own life.
