Better late than never. Coming to you one day later than planned, Oh When The Saints podcast reviews the Leicester City game and looks ahead to Liverpool away. It's Groundhog Day. Once again Saints went ahead in the Premier League, and once again they threw those points out of the window. We discuss Ralph's team selection, his head-scratching subs, Salisu's display, Ings' Euro dream, and Diallo's poor form. Oh When The Saints podcast analyses the performance at St Mary's as Saints overturned a two-goal deficit for the first time since March 2016 to beat Burnley 3-2 in an absolute thriller. It's an international break special at OWTS podcast! This week we discuss James Ward-Prowse's first goal for England - and we ask, has James done enough to make Gareth Southgate's squad for the Euros? We then turn our attention to Danny Ings and debate his chances of forcing his way back into contention for England in time for this summer. Che Adams is also on the agenda after making his Scotland debut, and our new contributor Ben Thompson joins us from Edinburgh to give us the Scottish view on Che, Stuart Armstrong and Ben's hopes for Steve Clarke's side at the Euros (in the same group as England by the way!). Southampton comfortably beat Bournemouth 3-0 on Saturday to reach the FA Cup semi-finals. That was a nice sentence to write! However you decide to dress it up - we're well and truly in the muck now. It's 10 defeats from our last 12 Premier League games. Four points taken from a possible 36. Relegation form. Bottom of the table form. Sunday was another low for Saints as we lost 2-1 at home to struggling Brighton. It was a desperately bad defensive display and a pathetically inept attacking performance. Not a great combination. Oh When The Saints podcast breaks down the match, what went wrong, what went right (anything? no), where we go from here, and we give our verdict on Ralph's position. We'd really appreciate if you followed us on our social channels. There were positives and negatives for Southampton as we slipped to a 5-2 defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday. Defensive mistakes once again cost us dearly after a good first-half performance at the Etihad. We discuss the errors, Ralph's surprising team-sheet, another goal for Che, Diallo's impressive cameo, and the MASSIVE game at home to Brighton on Sunday. SOUND THE ALARM - THREE POINTS FOR SOUTHAMPTON! It had been a long time coming but after 10 Premier League matches we finally ended our winless run on Saturday. Goals for James Ward-Prowse and Che Adams earned the victory for Saints at Sheffield United, allowing us all to breathe a collective sigh of relief. On the agenda: key players returning from injury to impress, Che's super strike, another clean sheet for Fraser, in praise of Nathan Tella and Stuart Armstrong, what to make of Minamino, Ralph's 100th game, and much more. This is a bit like torture now. It's one point from 27 for Southampton after another defeat - this time at Goodison Park against Everton on Monday Night Football. Oh When The Saints podcast reviews the major talking points including Ralph's decision to go with Forster, Ralph's substitutions, our lack of creativity, the disastrous performance of Nathan Redmond, more strange refereeing, and much more! Roll on Sheffield United on Saturday. Or not actually. That's going to be miserable, isn't it? We'd really appreciate if you followed us on our social channels. Not getting any better, is it? A desperate second-half performance at Elland Road condemned Southampton to a seventh Premier League defeat from our past eight games. Oh When The Saints podcast reviews all the major talking points from the match. They include: another second-half collapse, a complete absence of leadership, Ralph's decision-making, a penalty overturned, Che Adams' goal ruled out, and much more. Pain. After six consecutive weeks of painful Premier League defeats, a weekend finally arrived when we didn't lose the game. That feels nice, doesn't it? A much-improved defensive performance earned us a 1-1 home draw with in-form Chelsea on Saturday. Oh When The Saints podcast returns to review the major talking points including Minamino's finishing ability, Kante's unpunished lunge, Ralph's new Plan B, Bednarek's right-back display, Djenepo's starring role, Salisu's impressive full debut, and much more. That didn't last long, did it? After the positives from the 2-0 FA Cup win at Molineux, Saints reverted to form with a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to the same opposition on Sunday, this time in the Premier League. It was the same, old story - a second-half collapse seeing us throw away points from a winning position. We discuss why it keeps happening, plus we ask: 'Is Ralph panicking?' Also on the agenda, we chat about Kyle Walker-Peters' latest injury, our options for Chelsea, and much more. We'd really appreciate if you followed us on our social channels. That feels pretty good, doesn't it? Southampton are back to winning ways. It took a while, but thanks to Danny Ings and Stuart Armstrong we are in the FA Cup quarter-finals. We review the performance at Molineux as Saints dispatched Wolves, with the major talking point being the debut of Mohammed Salisu. The OWTS lads discuss Salisu's display, plus also debate Fraser Forster vs Alex McCarthy, the merits of Nathan Redmond up front, and much more. Pain. It's been a rough week for us - first the Aston Villa VAR fiasco. Then the Manchester United humiliation. And now the latest, a very different kind of humiliation at Newcastle on Saturday. Pat, Jack, and Mainstone review the performance on Tyneside as we lost our fifth straight Premier League game. Where do we go from here? What's gone so badly wrong with our defence? What changes need to be made for Thursday? And can it be blamed on Ralph, our injuries, the players, rotten luck or a combination of all four? We'd really appreciate if you followed us on our social channels. A red card after 90 seconds? Check. Another VAR disaster? Check. Another Mike Dean horror show. Check. Another nine-goal defeat? Check. There are angry tears all over the microphone this week as we attempt to pick the bones from another shellacking, this time to Manchester United. Where do we go from here? What does it mean for Ralph? Did we learn no lessons from Leicester? Is Mike Dean the world's worst human being referee? Lots of questions to answer as we battle through a podcast we hoped we'd never have to record. A depleted Saints side lost 2-0 at Leicester City on Saturday evening - we discuss all the fallout from the match. The main topic is the injury crisis - first-teamers including Jannik Vestergaard, Danny Ings, Oriol Romeu, Moussa Djenepo, Michael Obafemi, Nathan Tella, Nathan Redmond and Mohamed Salisu all missed out. To add to that, Will Smallbone picked up an injury at Leicester and we'll also be without Ryan Bertrand in our next Premier League game - at home to Arsenal - after he picked up a suspension following his 5th booking of the season. Time for something a bit different. With our FA Cup third-round match against Shrewsbury called off due to COVID, we decided to turn this episode into a Special Look at one of our favourite parts of football - The Away Day trip. Pat, Jack and Mainstone discuss their favourite memories of watching Southampton on the road. De Ridder's leveller at Reading in 2012, Rickie Lambert's hat-trick at The Den, Long's strike at Anfield, the 6-0 demolition at Wolves, Jos The Boss at Upton Park and much more. How about that then? Not a bad way to start 2021 as Southampton beat the defending champions Liverpool 1-0 at St Mary's on Monday night. Danny Ings scored the only goal - his 50th in the Premier League - as the Saints moved up to 6th in the table. We are FOUR points off the top. It's January. Pinch me. Ralph collapsed to his knees in tears at the end, yes, it was that kind of evening. Our last podcast of 2020! But it's four games without a win for Southampton now after a goalless draw at home to West Ham on Tuesday evening. Pat and Jack review the performance, discuss the (rushed?) return of Danny Ings, and the unusual situation of a self-isolating Ralph Hasenhuttl managing us via video link. We also look back on a very successful 2020 for the Saints - only Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd and Chelsea earned more Premier League points than Southampton over the calendar year. Back to winning ways! Danny Ings returned from injury to earn Southampton a 2-1 win at Brighton on Monday night. Super Jannik Vestergaard scored his 3rd goal of the season to cancel out Pascal Gross' early penalty. Then Danny stepped up with 10 minutes to play to grab all three points after Kyle Walker-Peters was fouled in the box by Solly March. Or was he? VAR got involved after referee David Coote initially gave a free-kick before changing his mind to a spot-kick. Love it. We discuss the controversial decision, plus pick our top performances and look ahead to the Christmas fixture list. Hope you enjoyed your weekend, Saints fans! A brilliant 2-0 win over Newcastle on Friday night saw Southampton reach the top of the Premier League table for the first time in the club's history. Cue lots of beer consumed on Friday/Saturday. Although results over the weekend have since seen us drop off the summit, it was still an outstanding achievement by Ralph and the boys. It was also the first time since 1988 that we led the way in the top flight. History made. Pat, Jack and Mainstone discuss the match, our brilliant start to the season, Theo Walcott's impressive return to the club, super Che Adams among the goals, what it means to be top of the table, and much much more. The Saints go marching on, on, on. It's five unbeaten for Ralph's men now after a 4-3 win at Aston Villa, and to be honest, the scoreline flattered the home team. We should have been out of sight after going 4-0 up, but sloppy defending late on made it close. The three points came at a cost too. Jan Bednarek, Ryan Bertrand, and most crucially, Danny Ings, all picked up injuries. Ings, in particular, is concerning as the striker suffered a knee injury and we await news of his scan. The former Liverpool man was blighted by knee problems during his time at Anfield, and it remains to be seen how serious this problem is. Fingers crossed it is not too bad. Saints are rolling. The lads secured a brilliant 2-0 win over early pace-setters Everton on Sunday to move 6th in the Premier League. It was a complete team performance with goals from James Ward-Prowse and Che Adams, before Lucas Digne was sent off for a straight red card in the second half. Southampton are now unbeaten in four games, an excellent response to defeats to Crystal Palace and Tottenham in our first two matches. Pat, Jack and Mainstone are joined for the first time by former Southampton journalist Joe Batchelor as the quartet break down all the major talking points from St Mary's. Lots to discuss on this week's episode of OWTS. We start with a look back at our 3-3 draw against Chelsea, a superb result for the Saints at Stamford Bridge. Southampton twice battled back from behind to earn a point, with Jannik Vestergaard heading home a stoppage-time equaliser to extend our unbeaten run to three games. Pat and Jack recap the match before welcoming a very special guest to the podcast - former Saints and Everton midfielder Barry Horne. Barry joins us to discuss his time at Saints, playing alongside Matt Le Tissier, Alan Shearer and others, his favourite Southampton memories, and his thoughts on Saints' next opponents - Everton - who also happen to be the club Barry supports. Two wins in a row, two clean sheets in a row! And a new centre midfielder signed too. It was a great Sunday for Saints as they beat a poor West Brom team 2-0 at St Mary's. Pat, Jack and Mainstone discuss the performance, with impressive displays from Kyle Walker-Peters, Jannik Vestergaard and Oriol Romeu. It may be Romeu's last start for a while too after Saints also confirmed the signing of Ibrahima Diallo from Brest for a £12.7m fee. Diallo is likely to be a direct replacement for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg - we chat about the signing and what to expect from Saints on Deadline Day. Wow. That was bad. Southampton were destroyed 5-2 by Tottenham at St Mary's on Sunday after a disastrous second-half display. Pat, Jack and Mainstone assess the damage from the performance. Who's to blame? Why did we play such a high line? Where is our midfield? Is Alex McCarthy on borrowed time? Any positives to take? Oh, and when are we going to BUY A MIDFIELDER?!?! Episode 23 is focused on fantasy football. The Premier League season is fast approaching and many of you will be setting your Gameweek 1 line-ups soon. To help you out, we've drafted in Fantasy Football Scout editor David Munday to give us all the stats, tips and tricks to make sure we win our mini-leagues this season. Well, to make sure we don't finish bottom at least. David is a legend in the FPL community and he tells us which Saints players to own (beyond just Danny Ings), he shares his favourite FPL strategies, his key differentials and his top players to own/avoid in the opening gameweeks. If you love fantasy football, this is a must listen ahead of the new season. With Jack off boozing in Bournemouth this weekend, after the fantasy football chat it's left to Pat to recap Saints' first preseason game. Ralph's boys absolutely smashed Swansea 7-1 at St Mary's so Pat struggles to avoid getting carried away. Later in the podcast Pat also discusses the breaking news that Harrison Reed and Mario Lemina have completed their moves to Fulham. Welcome to episode 21! It was a busy week at St Mary's with no fewer than three signings made - Mohammed Salisu, Kyle Walker-Peters and academy arrival Luke Pearce. Pat and Jack discuss all the deals, plus they assess the departure of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. How will his time at Saints be remembered? Also on the agenda, transfer talk involving Michael Obafemi, a discussion of potential Saints targets in central midfield, and a brief look at the LD Sports sponsorship story. That's a weird one. On Episode 20 it's a special interview with Real Valladolid expert https://twitter.com/MartiRVCF (Marti), who joins us to give us all the info on potential Southampton signing Mohammed Salisu. Sky Sports are reporting Southampton have completed a deal to sign Salisu from Real Valladolid for £10.9m. But we've never seen him play. What's he like? Strengths and weaknesses? Is he a dominating centre-back or a play-it-out-from-the-back defender? Maybe both? On Episode 19 it's an end of season special as OWTS is joined by Jake Hughes from St Mary's Musings. Saints ended on a high with a 3-1 home win over Sheffield United on Sunday. Pat, Jack and Jake briefly recap the game before moving on to review Southampton's entire 2019/20 campaign. A stonking win over Pompey, more ups and downs than a Thorpe Park rollercoaster, and of course THAT October defeat at St Mary's. This season had it all, and that's not even mentioning the small matter of a worldwide pandemic postponing the entire sport of football for three months starting in March. On the agenda > best moments, worst moments, standout players (not named Danny Ings), aims for next season, prospective transfers, what to expect from OWTS over the summer, and much more. On Episode 18, OWTS returns to review Southampton's 2-0 win at Bournemouth. We're now unbeaten in six games! Can the season never end please. Danny Ings (who else?) opened the scoring before Che Adams sealed the victory in stoppage time, although we did need a helpful VAR intervention to seal the three points. Pat and Jack discuss the main talking points, the standout performances (KWP that's you again), the form of Che, and much more. Plus, Pat speaks to the lads at award-winning Fulham podcast Fulhamish to get the lowdown on Harrison Reed. The midfielder is seriously impressing on loan at Craven Cottage, leading to speculation he could return to St Mary's this summer and potentially fill the void in our first-team left by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's impending departure. Michael Obafemi's 96th-minute equaliser secured a fully deserved 2-2 draw for Saints at Old Trafford, after goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial overturned Stuart Armstrong's opener. Pat and Jack discuss the main talking points, who impressed, who struggled, where that now leaves Southampton in the Premier League table, and much more. A special shorter-than-usual extra episode this week thanks to the Premier League's crazy fixture list. Pat and Jack jump on to record their reaction to Southampton's 1-1 draw at Everton on Thursday evening. Saints were massively unlucky not to take three points after dominating their opponents in the first half, leaving Jack to wonder whether it was the best 45 minutes of football we've played under Ralph Hasenhuttl so far. Danny Ings' hot streak continued, while Kyle Walker-Peters also impressed. Both topics were discussed, plus a number of other match talking points.
