Episode 70 -  We investigate the idea of work-life balance. What is it? Is it really a thing? How do we get it?

Look at all this stuff we covered:

What really IS work-life balance? Why much of the advice seems to be unhelpful It means different thing to different people Three different perspectives from the 'TED' stage

It is important and urgent for us to solve Work-life balance is a fallacy We could revisit our perspective

Steve-In-The-Field's adverts are definitely unhelpful! What happens if you 'google' family-life balance or hobby-life balance Considering the research, what are the practical steps?

Take up Shawn Achor's DAILY challenge for 21 days

Write down 3 gratitudes Journal 1 thing that went well because of you Exercise Mediate Perform 1 Random Act of Kindness

Take stock of your life

Look at the whole picture Consider everything Michael Hyatt's 10 domains can help:

Social Parental Marital Physical Emotional Intellectual Spiritual Financial Avocational (hobbies) Vocational (work)

Set goals for the two or three you want to improve

Be specific How would you feel? What would be happening?

Work out the little things

What are the little things you can do, which will support the bigger goals? How will you measure if you're doing the little things?

Keep a record... Make a commitment... Log a daily streak...

How do we consider 'work' in light of these new plans?

Boundaries Commitments Choices with intention

Episode 62 -  This is a great episode! In our second look at todoist, we move up to Level 2. Our survey said most of you use paper to manage your tasks. Todoist Level '2' could really help YOU too!

Look at all this stuff we covered:

We meet 'Emma' who has different stuff going on in her life - work stuff, hobby stuff, home stuff - and she manages it all with todo lists on paper and spreadsheets Projects - they're not just for big things like building hospitals

Preparing Lucy's birthday celebration is a project Learning the guitar is a project Be clear on what the tasks are for your project Why you MUST get flames painted on the Volvo How todoist can help you manage projects

Why you might consider the premium package A sentimental 'lockdown' reminiscence of going for a coffee Labels - grouping 'like' tasks together Batching - a great way to work Deciding which tasks to do when My labels:

Using todoist's fabulous 'natural language' to set up multiple recurring tasks and put them in the right place at the right time:

"Choose colour of #flames @pc on Saturday at 3 pm" "Check Facebook every weekday at 9 am #social @mobile"

Karma - why it's vital, but all other task managers miss it out Gamification Neopolitan Ice Cream bar charts (this is mine)...

Emma has now:

Grouped all her different activities into projects Set up recurring tasks Created labels so she can batch tasks together Learned guitar Gained a sense of accomplishment and achievement

Episode 53 -  In the last of our re-visits to helping you get even SHARPER this year, we go back to episode 30 where we summarised all the good stuff about routines. How is your start of day routine? Is it setting you up for the best you can be each day? And what about your end of day routine - does that help you wind down in the right way? These episodes are definitely worth another listen, which is why we did it!

If you'd like to listen to the FULL episodes, the links are here:

Episode 12 (Hello Good Morning) where we cover:

Why you should think about your morning routine Planning to plan from a personal perspective Having a morning routine isn't just for people running multi-million pound operations But if they do it - why shouldn't you? I've done the research in places like Success magazine,  Forbes,Tony Robbins, Jim Rohn, David Allen and so on, so you don't have to. Here are some articles for further reading:

(Success link removed as article has since been taken down) Fastcompany - The morning routines of the most successful people Forbes - Routines of 7 successful but human millennial entrepreneurs

What my morning routine is - and why I do it Circadian rhythms and - why they make you feel like you do Your alarm is a conflict, but you can make it work for you Why I get up at 4:50, and why you should get up at 6:37 Laugh, smile - do it FIRST The psychology of smiling Water water everywhere - get it inside you Run for your life - why some exercise every day is a good idea Oy - YOU! How your 'start of day' and your 'end of day' routine support each other, and support you getting stuff done Why Forbes.com say how you end your day is critical - in this article Michael Hyatt says, "The right activities before you sleep can set you up for success the next day" in this article The two groups of 'end of day' routines - the workday one, and the dayday one Why it's even more important to have a defined end of day process if you do work which doesn't have its own clear end to each day THE END OF WORKDAY ROUTINE: A great template for a 7 step routine from todoist.com - the full article is here

  1. Clean up your physical and digital workspace
  2. Review your to-done’s
  3. Write out tomorrow’s to-do list
  4. Set yourself up to “Eat Your Frog” first thing in the morning
  5. Confront the things you’ve been putting off. (Break them down and choose one 'next step' for tomorrow)
  6. Set a time to end your workday and stick to it
  7. End on a high note:

Forgive yourself Show gratitude Do someone a favour

My personal end of workday routine (from 18 Minutes: Find Your Focus, Master Distraction and Get the Right Things Done) looks like this:

Spend 5 minutes asking yourself these key questions:

How did my day go? What went well? What were my challenges? What did I learn today? About myself? About others? What do I plan to do - differently or the same tomorrow? Who did I interact with? Anyone I need to update? Thank? Ask a question? Share feedback with?

Episode 52 -  We go back in time, to an episode we originally broadcast in 2017 where we summarised the best ideas we'd found on setting GREAT goals. This version of EP29 is edited to be a bit tighter. We've got rid of the out of date stuff, and kept the good stuff. Wanna set better goals for 2019? Give it a listen.

If you'd like to listen to the FULL episodes, the links are here:

Episode 18 (Why Your Goals Aren't Working) where we cover:

The resource out there on setting goals 5 steps which many people agree on when setting successful goals

1) Visualising your goal – invoke all of your senses

The brain’s link between sounds, smells and memory

2) Writing your goal down – using the S.M.A.R.T. acronym

Be Specific about what the goal is Define how you would Measure whether you’ve achieved the goal Use ‘Action’ language – Do, Become, Develop Realistic – either take this literally and make the goals realistic, or take the ‘Big Hairy Audacious’ approach and set really stretching goals. You decide! Set a Time limit to when you want to achieve the goal by

3) Sharing your goal

Two schools of thought on this, make them public, or keep them private. Here are two perspectives: Fast Company say make it public  Derek Sivers says keep them private

4) Break it down

Be sure to split bigger goals into smaller steps Be clear on the NEXT step Make it something you can do within 24 hours

5) Plan

Set yourself dates in the diary to review your progress AND to celebrate your success

The one thing missing from most of the advice – WHY Why WHY? Never underestimate the power of stating the obvious 30 million people have given up smoking this way 5 whys according to iSixSigma 5 whys according to Toyota A version delivered from our kitchen table How you can make reviewing progress more satisfying Use a good planner to manage your progress – this is nice Action Day Academic Diary 17/18 The importance of being flexible – your goals don’t have to be set in stone In fact if you set the wrong ones, and you’ve changed them, then the process works!

Episode 19 (10 Great Ways To Track Your Goals) where we cover:

Why it’s no good just deciding on your goals Apps and mobile based resource can track and support your goals, because your device is always with you We reviewed loads of different websites, blogs and resource to research what apps are out there We (I) found 95 different apps to consider So then I filtered them based on which ones got recommended the most In the episode, I talked about the top 5 – here they are:

Coach.me Goals on track Strides Irunurun Lifetick

Next up was ‘paper based’ resource – sometimes it’s just nice to write with a pen Especially if you’re in a field (or the field) The Self Journal – here’s the link While researching The Self Journal, I came across this video by Gillateen. He’s funny and cool Action Day planners Two further bits of resource which are paper based but not journals:

Design the Life You Love by Ayshe Birsel – here’s the link Field Notes notebooks, my absolute fave – here they are Fisher Space pen, it can write upside down, underwater, in the snow. So if you find yourself upside down in snowy water it’s a must. Also if you just want to have a handy small pen, it’s also a must. Again – here’s the link

How many? Phenomenal brain numbers

He has written about cognitive load Empty your brain Stop things filling it up You'll thank yourself, feel more relaxed, be creative and your 3 pounds of fat and water will be SHARPER!

Lewis Hamilton doesn't drive a Hillman Imp A good news/bad news sandwich around how flexible your brain is What a great article from Lachlan Brown at - Hackspirit.com He tells us 7 activities or hobbies that science says can make you smarter

Episode 44 -  Can you rely on time? Can you manage it? What were you doing with yours 3 days ago at 3:15pm? Wanna find out? Then have a listen!

Some of the USEFUL stuff in there is:

Time management doesn't work What does 'time' even mean? Could we change how we measure time - some people already have Time seems to stretch depending on what you are doing Psychology Today explain why the years pass faster as you get older Terry - come one, give him a chance! At least his facts are real

The earth doesn't revolve every 24 hours The French tried to 'decimalise' time - TWICE! In the Soviet Union they changed the length of the week 3 times in the 20th Century

Changing your approach to what fills your day could work two ways:

Getting more done in the same time Doing the same amount in less time

Which one do you want? They're both good for different reasons Lunchtime - how do you do yours? Why measuring 'performance' just based on how many hours someone works may not be useful Is it time to find out what fills your 168 hours? E-mails take up more than we think according to - Forbes.com That's just e-mails, where are your other 'time-thieves'?

Track your time - it's VERY revealing

The Art of Manliness wrote - this article on the subject You can do it in different ways - one way is with apps Here's one  The one we used was - Toggl Consider how you're going to track your time with an app, there are 2 key ways:

Every time you start a new task, log it Checking in each 15/30 minutes and logging what you've been doing

The great thing about Toggl is that you can select categories and tags My categories were:

Work - reactive actions (meetings, resolving stuff etc) Work - proactive actions (planning, developing, strategy) Routines Travel Calls Self development Eating Family time Relaxing Meditating Messing about Podcast production

Instead of apps, try tracking time using a paper-based method There's loads around - but we made one for you Download it either from this image here...

Or if your shownotes don't show the image download it here - The Sharp Time Tracker

Decide on doing weekday/weekend or both Log actions every 15/30 minutes (you decide) Write EVERYTHING down - including messing about time (e.g. social media scrolling) Be honest Suspend judgement until you've finished Do it for at least 1 week - 2 if you can

If you want to - log it on paper first (the raw activities) and then put into Toggl afterwards You can then categorise and Toggl gives you reports in different ways Take what you've learned and use it to inform what steps you want to take Go and look at any of our other episodes to work on what you've decided on A good place to start if you want to plan your day better is Episode 35 We discovered that Terry needs some equipment training!

Episode 43 -  What makes us happy? Lots of things. Whether being happy means getting through things quicker, spending more time focusing on what's important, or being inspired - here are some ideas.

Some of the USEFUL stuff in there is:

A recommendation from Charles Duhigg (Author of Smarter Faster Better and The Power of Habit) It was this excellent piece by Alice Boyes at Harvard Business Review:

Why we fail at focusing on what's important How to change that

Schedule time for them Isolate the most impactful bits Anticipate and manage your feelings of anxiety Spend less time on unimportant tasks Prioritise tasks that will reduce your number of urgent/unimportant tasks Pay attention to what helps you see and track the bigger picture

A podcast recommendation we've made before - 10% Happier Being happy doesn't just mean laughing, it can also come from feeling uplifted The latest episodes of 10% Happier do just that, give them a listen If you want to just get things done in the day we found a resource with 5 quick tips It was compiled by Ashley Stahl at Forbes.com We've covered these tips in various guises before, but they are worth revisiting and checking in with ourselves by asking, "Do I do these well?"

Stop multitasking Take breaks Set small goals Take care of the biggest tasks when you are most alert Implement the two minute rule

Question - What are you doing when you are happiest? The answer may not be what you think We look at and listen to the Ted Talk by Matt Killingsworth He explains how he created an app that 15,000 people responded to From 650,000 reports, he learned that there is one thing we're doing more than anything else when we are happy You'll have to watch the talk, or listen to the episode to find out!

It's possible I claimed it incorrectly, but we had a great chat about how YOU can finally free time up to get that creative project up and running - or in fact do anything which has been burning a hole in the back of your mind for the last few years.

Some of the USEFUL stuff in there is:

Jessica's first piece of work that I discovered - Out On The Wire Then I found the amazing - Growing Gills We talked about how to focus on what's important How it can be difficult to find space to get that creative idea off the ground What you need to do in order to do it Jessica's fantastic - Creative Focus Workshop

Episode 41 -  Four ideas and suggestions for the price of one episode! And of course that price is ZERO pence, cents, yen, euro etc...

Some of the USEFUL stuff in there is:

Before we hit the subjects, a simple plea asking for your help - if you like what we do, please tell one friend who you think would also like what we do ONE: A great blog we found at lifehacker.com from Michelle Woo Michelle suggests we should split our to-do list into 2:

A simple list A hard list

She goes on to explain why paying attention to your biological rhythms can help you get more done Backed up by people such as Molly Crockett and Dan pink The full article by Michelle Woo is here The funny one at Buzzfeed (ketchup for bookmarks) TWO:  Evernote have a smashing podcast The episode we spotlight is one featuring Michael Hyatt and Marvell Allen Marvell talks about how influence is not limited to managers How people who work in organisations have as much influence in business She also helps us deal with difficult managers Evernote podcast link here THREE: I found a blog from success.com which was really inspiring Jim Rohn is quoted talking about his views on 'value' versus 'valuables' It takes a bit of reading - but it's worth your attention Success must be attracted and not pursued - Jim Rohn FOUR: Finally the amazing Daniel Pink (author of Drive) held a Ted Talk in 2009 He makes a compelling case for thinking more carefully about using incentives Instinctively you might think that if you offer an incentive, people will do better But you would be wrong To find out more - watch this super talk And if he convinces you - buy a copy of Drive and find out how you can make it work for you

We have got a VERY special episode next time - I'll keep you in suspense, but if you've planned to get a creative project off the ground it will be well worth your while checking in.

Episode 40 -  Problems not going away? Struggling to solve the big ones? Then this episode is for you. We look at the Creative Problem Solving model and how it can help YOU sort them out.

Some of the USEFUL stuff in there is:

Steve In The Field is back - OH NO!

What do we mean by 'problem' ?

The things that cause us to struggle:

What the heck is 'convergent thinking'? Quotes - they sound nice, but many don't really help do they? Lisa and Steve at the table are back - HOORAY! We demonstrate why 'sticky thinking' doesn't help

Creative Problem Solving - the CEF full explanation is here  The key stages of the Creative Problem Solving model

Clarify

Gather as much information as you can about the problem Use - The 5 Why Technique Ask more questions - Who? What? Where? When? How? Define your aim - where do you want to get to, what would the world be like if the problem went away? Remember, the problem may not be the thing you want to solve

Ideate

Come up with as much data as you can on the problem Brainstorm Use search engines Make lists Do Mind Maps DON'T judge at this stage - just get as much varied information as you can

Develop

Now you sort everything out Start to prioritise the things which may help you Consider losing the things which are obviously unhelpful

Implement

Turn it all into a plan Make it actionable Be SMART Do IT!

Episode 37 - In this final episode on managing your focus and attention, we look at dealing with the stuff that comes up in your day and give you some great techniques and solutions to help you get it done well.

Some of the USEFUL stuff in there is:

What's led to this episode:

Episode 34 - How to say 'NO' to reduce your workload Episode 35 - How to decide what's important when prioritising Episode 36 - How to use 5 key tools to plan your day:

A notebook (or somewhere to dump your 'mind') An Action list Buckets A Calendar A Routine

BUT DON'T WORRY IF YOU HAVEN'T LISTENED TO THEM - OR PREPARED... There's loads in this one you can use either on its own, or with the structure

How does your day look? Are you a canoeist, a balloonist, or a cyclist?

PLANNING THE DAY

This should take 5 minutes once you've got your template ready

I use the questions from Peter Bregman's 18 minutes model:

—Review your Action list – what will make this day highly effective? —What can I realistically accomplish in my areas of focus? (From EP35) —What will leave me feeling productive and successful at the end of the day? Then pick 3 things from your Action List and put them into your calendar for today as they are now things which MUST happen on this day

How you do this is up to you, but the key is choosing 3 'Important' things to do today If you have more than 3 things, or you're not sure which ones to choose use:

The Urgent/Important Principle - A detailed explanation here from Mindtools.com Urgent = It's got a deadline (usually someone else's!) Important = It will help you make progress on one of YOUR bigger goals

Ideally you want to pick 3 things which are 'Important' but not 'Urgent'

Eating the Frog Choosing the right energy levels Planning in breaks and movement

Setting a chime every hour to check we're on course. When it goes off...

—BEEP! STOP! Take a deep breath. Then… Am I doing what I most need to be doing right now? Am I being who I most want to be right now? Recommit to how you're going to use your next hour

DOING THE DAY

Scenario 1 - You are presented with a single simple action to complete

Can you fully do this action, completely within 2 minutes? Is it a single item which does not have loads of others behind it? If so - do it as soon as you are presented with it This is the 2 minute rule Use this rule with discretion - don't just default to doing everything as it comes along

Solution 1 - If that action can be done completely - apply the 2 minute rule

Scenario 2 - You're presented with a number of tasks and/or some will take more than 2 minutes

Stop and think about what each thing means to you - what do you have to do? What is the 'action' you have to do to fully complete this task Break it down into multiple actions if needed Write each action down in a sentence with the 'action' word at the front E.g. "OUTLINE the Redman report" or "CALL the garage to book the car in" If you have a system - put it in there. If you don't - park it by putting it onto a list

Solution 2 - Break the task down into a doable action - and put onto a list OR use your notebook/action list/buckets to put it into your system

Scenario 3 - Being presented with 2 or more things which want your attention NOW

Use the Urgent/Important Test again

The phone is ringing it's your son's school The boss wants a response to an email within 10 minutes A colleague is asking for some help with a task

We decided that the school call was 'Urgent' AND 'Important' - so we did this first The boss request - that was 'Urgent', but not 'Important' (in our test) so we did this next Jane's request was 'Important' but not 'Urgent' - so we planned to help her later today when we had time

Solution 3 - Use the Urgent/Important principle...

Episode 36 -  In the second of our series on managing your focus, we give you the structure to help you set your day up to be efficient, manage your focus and attention, and win at life.

Some of the USEFUL stuff in there is:

Don't wish your life away just trying to get to the end of your day Demand a high quality of life DURING the day 5 Tools and Techniques to bullet-proof your day and make progress towards what's important Some of it comes from - David Allen's GTD And some from - Peter Bregman's 18 Minutes And the rest is from mw We look at the 5 tools in a simple 'manual' way first

A Notebook An Action List Buckets A Calendar A Routine

1) A Notebook - Or something to dump your 'head stuff' into...

Stop waking up at 2am because you've just remembered things The journey my Fisher Space Pen took

INTERACTIVE LISTENERS - DECIDE ON HOW YOU ARE GOING TO ENSURE YOU CAN WRITE DOWN ANYTHING THAT COMES TO MIND AND GET IT OUT OF YOUR HEAD

2) Action List - Stop being woolly...

What's wrong with a to-do list? I let you in on the secret The actual to-do list I was referring to (actually it's a good article) 'Write Blog Post' is the wrong thing to have on your list A better version could be:

Decide on Blog Post Subject Write first paragraph Write second paragraph Write third paragraph Review and edit post Choose an image Upload to Wordpress Post on Twitter

Start with an "Action" and keep it simple

INTERACTIVE LISTENERS - IF YOU HAVE YOUR LIST FROM LAST WEEK, RE-WRITE THE ITEMS ON THERE INTO ACTIONS. A VERB OR ACTION WORD FIRST - AND KEEP IT SIMPLE.

IF YOU DIDN'T DO LAST WEEK INTERACTIVELY, PRACTICE WRITING OUT SOME TASKS AS AN 'ACTION'

3) Buckets - Where you put the stuff ready to do it...

Choosing categories to batch your work. GTD calls them 'Contexts'. Deciding on your buckets. Consider:

Where do you do your stuff? Who do you do it with? What items or devices do you need? What are your different frames of mind? What do you tend to do when you've got high/low energy?

A good resource for inspiration is at - Simplicity Bliss My buckets:

Errands/Shopping - Things to buy, dry cleaners, groceries (we use Wunderlist for this) Home - Clearing garage, painting, housework Agendas - Things I do with other people, work, family, everyone Quick Jobs - Firing off e-mails, reading memo's, updating calendar Calls - Self explanatory Downtime - Where I put articles, website links or pamphlets for later reading Brain Dead - Cleaning things, tidying, clearing out Full focus - Stuff I have to pay attention to, writing reports, reviewing complex data, meetings. Often these will be things I will use the Pomodoro technique for Routines - Regular repetitive tasks. Things I do every day/week. All my repeat things are in here from daily meditation to clearing e-mails to zero. My 18 minutes actions are in here Review - The weekly review, along with any regular reports and info I get which doesn't need full focus, but is also not a 'quick job' Someday Maybe - Things that I don't need to do soon, but which I want to keep on the radar because thay may become live tasks at some point. Be careful as this can easily become a 'dumping ground' so must be cleared out weekly

You need a physical representation of each bucket with the relevant jobs or actions physically inside them. You can use Expander Files, Filing Cabinets, In-Trays, A book divided into sections, Even actual buckets! Note - if you are doing this with pen and paper, it's important to keep a copy of the full action list somewhere ready for your weekly review. Episode 35 -  The first episode in a series of 3 where I share with you my trusted system for managing my activities. In this episode we work out how to define what's important to you, so you can make the rest of the system work really well. This is an interactive episode - you will need some paper, and a pen if you want to work this out for yourself.

Some of the USEFUL stuff in there is:

Time Management doesn't work - you can't manage time! Why we can only ever do one thing Stop trying to manage the time, and start managing what you pay attention to You don't need to feel anxious any more about what you haven't done You can apply this to work, home, family or life in general No apps in these episodes (almost) Steve in the Field makes a brief appearance - and of course a poor choice! Why you need a filter to decide on what's important to YOU The four levels which will help you decide importance:

Level 1 - What's the point or purpose Level 2 - What are the different areas Level 3 - What is the stuff - the detail Level 4 - What should I do right now

Whatever you're reviewing, start at Level 1) The point or purpose

Job - What is the point or purpose of your job? Why does that role exist? Some answers could be:

To grow a business, to make people's lives better, to pay the bills!

Vocation - What is the point or purpose of the vocation? Where is the value of that vocation to society? Some answers could be:

To make society better, to remove suffering, to help disadvantaged people

Parent - What is the point or purpose of being a parent? How would you define aims which might be bigger than you? Some answers could be:

To prepare children to be great adults, to help children learn to make a contribution, to ensure children feel loved and secure

NOW COME UP WITH 2/3 'PURPOSES' THAT APPLY TO YOU!

Then it's time to look at Level 2) What are the different areas?

Job - What are the broad areas you focus on in your job? Some answers could be:

Marketing, Sales, Developing People, Recruitment, Customer Engagement, Networking

Home Maintenance - What are the areas you look after or need to plan for? Some answers could be:

Gardening, Decorating, Housework, Plumbing

NOW COME UP WITH 10-20 'AREAS' THAT YOU FOCUS ON OR WORK IN APPLICABLE TO WHAT YOU'RE REVIEWING

Now it's time to look at Level 3) The detail, the stuff, all the tasks you get involved in

Job - What are all of the tasks and activities you work on, everything you can do with your hands, arms, legs, brain, mouth - physical things you can do Some answers could be:

Meetings, presentations, complaints, producing reports, appraisals, interviews, phone calls, writing reports, raising invoices, creative activities

Parent - what is the stuff that fills your day? Some answers could be:

School runs, parent/school meetings, making lunch, homework, bedtime stories, dealing with accidents, cleaning.

NOW COME UP WITH THE ENTIRE LIST OF ACTIVITIES AND TASKS YOU GET INVOLVED IN. THERE'S LIKELY TO BE LOADS SO TAKE SOME TIME OVER THIS. RE-VISIT THE LIST A FEW TIMES. THERE'LL BE STUFF YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN!

Lisa and Steve had a bit of a chat at this point to see how she got on NOW! Put your Level 3 list (Activities) to one side, you'll need it for next week Grab your list for Level 1 - think really carefully are you happy about your 2/3 things you've got for Level 1 ? Grab your list for Level 2 - the areas of focus. Look at them, consider them against level 1 purpose, ask yourself this question - which ones are most likely to positively support Level 1 stuff? What are 3-6 areas of focus which more than any others support Level 1 ? Put a star by the side of the 3-6 areas of focus you’ve chosen Then rewrite each one an ACTION starting with a verb like 'grow, build, sell, develop, gain,

Episode 29  In this episode we help you prepare for a sharper new YOU for next year, by revisiting the subject of goals. We've produced a compilation episode on the subject, with all the really useful stuff from episodes 18 and 19.

He’s funny and cool My Pro Planner They had a nice video too – here it is Action Day planners Two further bits of resource which are paper based but not journals:

Design the Life You Love by Ayshe Birsel – here’s the link Field Notes notebooks, my absolute fave – here they are Fisher Space pen, it can write upside down, underwater, in the snow. So if you find yourself upside down in snowy water it’s a must. Also if you just want to have a handy small pen, it’s also a must. Again – here’s the link

Episode 22 -  We're having a look at sleep this time. We learn why sleep is important, how a lack of it can literally kill you, what happens when we do get sleep and how to achieve it. There's also a liberal sprinkling of nonsense from 'Steve out in the field' which he thought was a good idea:

Some of the stuff in there is:

Episode 21 -  UPDATE* - Mike is no longer working in the voiceover industry, but I think there's lots to get out of this episode, so I've left it up.

This week we talk to Mike Broderick. Mike is a UK based entrepreneur who specialises in Voiceover work. Mike shared with us his challenges, his solutions, and how he gets things done whilst continually revisiting how he does them. There are some practical tips in there, and I think a lovely story on Mike's frame of mind. Enjoy.

Some of the stuff in there is:

How Mike went from Economic Development to talking into a microphone for a living Douglas Puryer's book - Your life can be better How it may have ideas for all of us Finding it hard to focus Batching Learning to not beat yourself up Why meditation allows you to decide what you feel about something The risks of trying to be too perfect The benefits of investing in  a tool to speed up your processes instead of just sticking with doing things the same way Smiling Finding the opportunity to practice in everything you do The Moment Podcast with Brian Koppelmann and Seth Godin How our minds create a story after things happen to justify actions our brain and body already decided on Our story and how it may not be accurate Mike's myth and why he's changing his mind on it The power of taking time to define what you're grateful for Aiming to get a little better each day Meditation Google for creating lists with your voice Ralph Waldo Emerson - "What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us. Episode 20 -  This week we're showing you how to get in control of your inbox. Two options for you - pick any of the tips you like and apply them individually, or apply them all and get to 'INBOX ZERO' every day. In the first few minutes we look at why email is not necessarily helping us, and then in part two we show you 10 things you can do differently.

Some of the stuff in there is:

PART 1 - 01:33

Who Elwood Edwards is Why e-mail is different now than it was in 1989 The Radicati Group Estimate 269 Bn emails sent a day - in this article Why e-mail is no respecter of hierarchy, time or our priorities The Daily Mail claim email is taking up over 2 hours a day - article here The Huffington Post claim it's taking up over 6 hours a day - article here Lifehacker explain why it can take over 20 minutes to get interrupted concentration back - here The CTO who learned that email was costing his company the equivalent of a Learjet - article here We ask - do you want one whole working day back every month? Where some of my solutions have come from:

GTD Merlin Mann

PART 2 - 09:08

How to clear your inbox

Frame of mind - treat email like post, it's a task to get done so you can get back to your job, it isn't your job Process emails don't read them - what's the verb, what's the action, be clear on what you need to do, and when, and then put it into a system 2 minute rule - if you can complete the action in 2 minutes, do it Notifications - turn them off, and process mail at structured times in the day Multiple folders -  get rid Set up two folders - Action and Awaiting Response Challenge expectations - especially your own. Would you prefer to be someone who is productive, or someone who has a reputation for responding to emails Don't accept other people passing their urgency onto you - make your own decisions about whether the content is important and/or urgent - (don't forget there's a difference) Send fewer emails -  consider other methods of communication Avoid cc and reply all - unless you want ten emails back for the price of one

Episode 19 -  Last time we looked at setting goals. But unless you do something about them, they end up being nothing more than good intentions. In this episode we share the resource that's out there to help you do your goals, keep them on track, measure your performance and make them happen. We feature 5 apps, and 5 'paper based' resources - so there's something for everyone!

Some of the stuff in there is:

Why it's no good just deciding on your goals Apps and mobile based resource can track and support your goals, because your device is always with you We reviewed loads of different websites, blogs and resource to research what apps are out there We (I) found 95 different apps to consider So then I filtered them based on which ones got recommended the most In the episode, I talked about the top 5 - here they are:

Coach.me Goals on track Strides Irunurun Lifetick

I also promised you I'd link to the top 10 in the shownotes, so here are the next 5:

HabitBull StickK Balanced Habit List Way Of Life

Next up was 'paper based' resource - sometimes it's just nice to write with a pen Especially if you're in a field (or the field) The Self Journal - here's the link While researching The Self Journal, I came across this video by Gillateen. He's funny and cool My Pro Planner - (link disabled while they re-stock) They had a nice video too - here it is Action Day planners - here's the link Two further bits of resource which are paper based but not journals:

Design the Life You Love by Ayshe Birsel - here's the link Field Notes notebooks, my absolute fave - here they are Fisher Space pen, it can write upside down, underwater, in the snow. So if you find yourself upside down in snowy water it's a must. Also if you just want to have a handy small pen, it's also a must. Again - here's the link

I also said I'd publish links to all the resource we used for this podcast. Here you go:

Lifewire.com Michael Hyatt Entrepreneur.com App Advice.com Buzzfeed The Job Network The Guardian Lifewire (again) Forbes Books Lifehacker Tomas Lau Free Apps For Me Archipreneur Makeuseof.com Inside Source pk.acmgold.com Flightcentre Better Humans NY Times Inc

PHEW! As I said - we do the work, so you don't have to!

Episode 18-  We've spent some time looking at goals. No, not football goals - life goals! We've gathered together 5 KEY actions for setting effective goals, plus ONE missing thing that most of the resource doesn't tell you. It's not a secret, it's in the title!  Some of the stuff in there is:

The resource out there on setting goals 5 steps which many people agree on when setting successful goals

1) Visualising your goal - invoke all of your senses

The brain's link between sounds, smells and memory

2) Writing your goal down - using the S.M.A.R.T. acronym

Be Specific about what the goal is Define how you would Measure whether you've achieved the goal Use 'Action' language - Do, Become, Develop Realistic - either take this literally and make the goals realistic, or take the 'Big Hairy Audacious' approach and set really stretching goals. You decide! Set a Time limit to when you want to achieve the goal by

3) Sharing your goal

Two schools of thought on this, make them public, or keep them private. Here are two perspectives: Fact Company say make it public  Derek Sivers says keep them private

4) Break it down

Be sure to split bigger goals into smaller steps Be clear on the NEXT step Make it something you can do within 24 hours

5) Plan

Set yourself dates in the diary to review your progress AND to celebrate your success

The one thing missing from most of the advice - WHY Why WHY? Never underestimate the power of stating the obvious 30 million people have given up smoking this way 5 whys according to iSixSigma 5 whys according to Toyota A version delivered from our kitchen table How you can make reviewing progress more satisfying Use a good planner to manage your progress - this is nice Action Day Academic Diary 17/18 The importance of being flexible - your goals don't have to be set in stone In fact if you set the wrong ones, and you've changed them, then the process works!

Episode 13 - Kicking 'luck' to the kerb and ending your day with intention!

We follow up last week's 'start of day' routine focus, with its neighbour and bedfellow - the 'end of day' routine. These two powerful rituals can add up to making all the stuff that happens in your day manageable, easier - and leaving you more time to do the things you WANT to do. We give you ideas, pointers, places to look at and plenty of information to get you on our way to setting up your own end of day routine.  Some of the stuff in there is:

THE END OF DAY (DAY) ROUTINE:

Set a 'turn off your screen' time - and stick to it

What Scientific American say about - using screens before bedtime Coffee - did you know it has a 'half-life'? - The effect of caffeine on sleep

Wind-down time, take it seriously

Take the time to work out how long you need to start your wind-down process. Mine is 45 minutes between starting, and going to sleep

Journal. Take time in your wind down space to write down:

What went well for you today What you learned today which developed you, or improved something Three things you appreciate, or are grateful for. The more basic, the better

Episode 12 - Start your day with a killer morning routine

After taking a pause so we can 'be better' - we're back this week with an episode on starting your day in the best way you possibly can. After all, if you're going to be good at things, and have a great day - you're in with a fighting chance if you start that day well. In this week's episode we look at why you should think about your morning routine, how small things can make a difference, and where to find out how successful people start their day.  Some of the stuff in there is:

Why you should think about your morning routine Planning to plan from a personal perspective Having a morning routine isn't just for people running multi-million pound operations But if they do it - why shouldn't you? I've done the research in places like Success magazine,  Forbes,Tony Robbins, Jim Rohn, David Allen and so on, so you don't have to. Here are some articles for further reading:

Success - 10 morning routines of wildly successful entrepreneurs Fastcompany - The morning routines of the most successful people Forbes - Routines of 7 successful but human millennial entrepreneurs

(time) Get cold - If it's good enough for Tim Ferris and Tony Robbins, it's good enough for us What 30 seconds in a cold shower tells you about taking things for granted The 6 steps: Alarm - set it with intention, don't snooze Laugh - look in the mirror laugh or smile at yourself, I promise you, it's funny and good Water - half a litre, 16 ounces re-hydrate quickly after you've woken up Activity - walk outside, gym, run - whatever works for you You time - 10 minutes of meditation, yoga, or just taking 10 to stop and think what you want to do today Shower - cold blast, 30 seconds at the end.

Episode 11 - The word on the street about getting YOU time

In our final episode on getting some 'me-time' we turn to two books which I think you'll like. Both of these books are easy reads, clear and enjoyable. 10% Happier is more specific as it's primarily about how Dan found meditation could help cure his chattering voice, while How To Live a Good Life is broader looking at options across your life in general. Great reads, and if you prefer your resource in the form of something you CAN take into the bath, on the bus or places that you can't use on-line resource, then I thoroughly recommend giving them a try.  Some of the stuff in there is:

What having a panic attack, live, on-air, in front of millions of people - sounds like How Dan Harris moved from that to changing his life Paying attention to that voice in your head, and then doing something about it Meditation - it's not just for hippies Showering, bolognaise and the weather The book 10% Happier - 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works - A True Story Why a kind sounding man, can give you powerful insights Jonathan Fields - explanation of why reading his book is a good idea Where to get a free chapter of the - How To Live a Good Life book

Episode 10 - Plan to get down

This week we consider the idea that planning to do nothing, helps you do more. It seems weird, but there is research showing that if you achieve 'down-time' you actually get better at doing stuff. Well we're gonna be all over something that involves being BETTER aren't we? So, continuing the theme of 'me-time' we look at apps and on-line resource to help you do just that.  Some of the stuff in there is:

Episode 9 - Why you should take time out for yourself, before you crash.

Ok, it's a little dramatic, but in reality how long should you go supporting and helping others - before you decide to spend time on yourself? Beginning with a quest set by our conversation in Ep8 with Mel Elliott to find out why we should focus on setting time aside for ourselves, in this episode we end up crashing planes, meditating and bringing it all together in a good life.

Some of the stuff in there is:

Why we should plan in some time to ourselves What could motivate us to plan in some downtime Why you should attach your oxygen mask first - Telegraph article Considering building up your resources, before you give to others Jonathan Fields and - The Good Life Project Planning to fill the part of our lives described by Jonathan as the "vitality bucket" The power of music, and learning an instrument Psychology Today - The 10 Ways Musical Training Boosts Brain Power Planning to relax What Katy Perry, Steve Jobs and Oprah Winfrey have in common Meditating - It's not woo woo Dan Harris - The 10% Happier Podcast The One You Feed Podcast - EP147 Washington Post article on the science of meditation

Episode 8 - In conversation with Mel Elliott

This week's episode is a recording of a conversation I had with Mel Elliott about her world as a successful professional voiceover artist. We talked about the challenges of being a Mum, juggling a busy job with an ever-moving landscape, and her solutions to getting better at what she has to do, in order to spend more time doing what she wants to do.

Mel's many solutions are listed below with links to stuff that you can go and look at if you'd like...

Some of the stuff in there is:

Never do the same thing twice, once is great - twice automate Templates for email - here's a link to doing it in Outlook Keyboard shortcuts, and YES they can save you 8 days a year - have a look here Routines - get one in the bag before lunch, build half hour buffer at end of the day (when I read the one above at first I thought I'd written a 'half hour buffet' at the end of the day, that also works!) Plan on a Friday - rolling lists in the week Prioritise health and well being Eat together - Some ideas and inspiration here if you're struggling to do it  Full stop on the working day - clock off, end process, blanket, shutdown Put phone away when with kids Get something done if it is as quick to do than put on a list - GTD 2 minute rule James Rhodes book on - How to Play the Piano If you want to hear more from Mel - her voiceover website is here

It was great talking with Mel, and I've now got my challenge set to look at how we can prioritise 'me time' without feeling guilty or disrupting our commitments.

Episode 7 - Habits and the written word

In the last of our series on habits, we look at the written word and where you can find potentially life-changing advice if you're happy to spend a little bit of time diving into these excellent books. Sometimes, you can't get a quick solution or a hack. Sometimes you've got to put a bit of work in, and read a book. And BOY do we think it's worth it!

Some of the stuff in there is:

Even if you've already read it, it's worth re-visiting - The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People The urgent important matrix - Eisenhower version Charles Duhigg - Smarter Faster Better: The Secrets of Being Productive in Life and Business The Peter Bregman Podcast Peter Bregman -18 Minutes: Find Your Focus, Master Distraction and Get the Right Things Done

This week we look at Apps to support you with the 'cue' and 'reward' steps, and some other online resource which can help when you want to change your behaviour. From presentations to party planning, a good understanding of why we behave like we do is key to unlocking the changes you really want to happen.

Some of the stuff in there is:

New Year's resolutions, and why they don't stick - some stats Gym memberships - some stats from Planet Money Apps which can help you with the 'cue' and 'reward' parts of habit forming For both Android and Apple there's - Coach.me Prefer simple and on Android? try - Loop Habit Tracker Prefer simple and on IOS (And Android)? try - Habit Bull Why the behaviour and reward cycle is so powerful - Judson Brewer on the TED stage Procrastination and how to attack it

Episode 4 - Omnibus and Interview

This week's episode is a longer one, and it's an episode of two halves. The first part is a recap of the things we've covered so far in episodes 1-3. We're planning to do this monthly, to give people the opportunity to listen to one longer episode covering the key take-away's so they can get the 'facts' without the other stuff we do. It doesn't cover everything, and of course you'll miss the fun stuff, but we're trying to help you get this podcast in different ways to suit you.

All of the links we refer to are in the relevant shownotes for episodes 1,2 and 3. So if you'd like to find out more about anything we cover, pop over to the relevant episode and it's all there.

The second half is a recorded conversation with someone who has come along to talk to us about what their challenges are to 'being better', and how they overcome them.

This week I spoke to Lisa Rouse. It may seem like we hit it off really well, that's partly because we did and partly because she's my partner in crime.

Lisa talked about the challenges of being a mum, working a full time job, and running a business. If you want to find out more about her business at Frenzyhouse, or the smashing Soundwave art here are some links:

As it's a longer episode, here are the timings to help you find the bit you want with links to the full episodes

02:11 An introduction to podcasts (From Episode 1) 07:44 Facebook (From Episode 2) 11:35 Twitter (From Episode 3) 17:58 LinkedIn (From Episode 3) 22:08 A conversation with Lisa

Episode 3 - You don't need to be faster, just better

Social media doesn't have to be a drag, it can be a superb resource, and lively to use if we think about how we're using it. We talk about how to keep up with the ever-increasing social media 'noise' here in this episode. Can you use LinkedIn and Twitter to get better? We think so, and explain how and why you should. This time we take our life in our hands by talking to people on the street, and at least one of them isn't me!

Some of the stuff in there is:

LinkedIn - should you? LinkedIn claim 60% of the UK's student and working population are connected in this article The We Are Flint survey which gives a different and interesting perspective Some suggestions to get the most out of your time if you dive in to LinkedIn

Thank people - they'll appreciate it Take time to set up your profile Join groups - you can get good information Re-share articles - people will notice you Write articles. Come on, you know you want to. After all you know something that no one else does Limit your time on there - I reckon 30 mins a fortnight or month is probably enough

Useful info from Forbes.com on setting up your profile and getting the most from LinkedIn

Twitter - do you bucket?

Some of the numbers I quoted were from this article from Brandwatch Using lists and how it may save your life. Or time. Or money. Ok, maybe not your life, but definitely time and after all time is money eh? Some suggestions for starting your lists:

'Family stuff' - this could include people who tweet about days out, kids clothes, education and so on 'People I want to engage with' - this is self-explanatory. Bear in mind people do see what you've called the list you put them in, so something like 'great connections' or similar may be a good name for this list Local Network People linked to the field you work in (field=vocation, not somewhere sheep graze, unless of course you're a farmer in which case it could be spot on). People linked to the field you want to work in (!) 'Inspirational People' 'Monday List', 'Tuesday List' - this is a different way to do it. Limiting the time you spend online each day

My top five tips for new Twitter users:

Do NOT buy followers, or connect back to people claiming to "increase your followers to 20,000!". They are a waste of time, it's pointless and doesn't help you Engage with people, that's a much better way to grow than any 'hack' Remember that we're human (well most of us) and we like to be acknowledged Re-tweet and share tweets, it will grow your connections and show people you're interested in what they're talking about Use Hashtags - they still work. Maximum 3 per tweet though. #After #all #this #just #looks#annoying!!!

And my bonus tip - Use the Twitter Hour. Here's a link to a directory from Design That Fits

Episode 2 - Escape the Tractor Beam

In this second episode we look at social media and how to consider using it to help us be BETTER at what we do. We also go out on location, and take our life in our hands!

It might sound like I'm on a mission to upset the apple cart when it comes to social media, and I guess I am a bit. Taking control of your use is the key - after all, we don't want external things to control us do we?

In this episode we cover:

Sending messages from the future Thinking differently about what successful people do - and stealing it to help us Why some social media is rubbish How to break the vicious circle using technology Ditching the 'News Feed' (it's the secret Tractor Beam) The difference between Profiles, Pages and Groups - did you know? How Arnie came back through Facebook Getting outside - go on, do it now (well after you've finished listening eh) We use bad grammar in one section - did you spot it? We did it on purpose, honest guv'. Why the PowerPuff girls are messing with your head
