The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS), founded in Edinburgh in 1983, is a membership organisation which bottles and sells single cask, single malt whisky. It purchases individual casks from more than 170 malt whisky distilleries in Scotland and throughout the world, bottles them and retails directly to its members. It also runs three private members' rooms in the UK and in several international locations.
The origins of the Society lie in Phillip "Pip" Hills' travels around the Scottish Highlands in the late 1970s, during which he sampled several whiskies drawn straight from the cask.
Hills was so affected by what he tasted that, in 1978, he persuaded several acquaintances to share in the cost of a cask from the Glenfarclas distillery. Over time, the group of friends expanded to become a small syndicate and more casks were purchased, bottled and distributed to subscribing members.
Coinciding with the decision to open membership to the wider public in 1983, the Society purchased its first property, The Vaults, in Leith; a building, whose vaulted wine cellars reputedly stretch back to the 12th century.
The Society created a set of members' rooms there.
In 1996, the Society launched a share scheme for its members, the proceeds from which were invested in the purchase of a London venue.
2004 saw the Society open a second venue in Edinburgh – a Georgian townhouse on Queen Street. In the same year, the Society was acquired by Glenmorangie plc.
To mark the 25th anniversary of its foundation, the Society redesigned its bottles, to include more information and a full tasting note on the front of the bottle.[4]
In 2015, the Society was sold back to private investors from Glenmorangie plc (now under the ownership of LVMH).
In June 2021, the private owners floated the holding company The Artisanal Spirits Company plc on the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange.

Powers Irish Whiskey is teaming up with some of Northern Ireland’s best artisans to host a series of
immersive whiskey influenced events and experiences this May to celebrate World Whiskey Day.
The Powers X event series will showcase a variety of local artisan brands and producers at a series of
intimate events and at-home experiences.

Inspited by our land and the many generations before us and their sometimes wayward attitude, Wayward Irish Spirits is working towards becoming Ireland’s most beautifully situated premium Single Estate, grain to glass, distillery. We are located outside Killarney at the Lakeview Estate, our family’s home of 900 years. Unusually, we grow our own barley here that is distilled for us into Lakeview Single Estate Whiskey, launching in 2022. Distilling onsite follows in 2024.
Alongside this, The Liberator Irish Whiskey is our range of Whiskeys sourced as young spirit from 6 of Ireland’s finest distilleries. We mature these further in the Estate’s unique microclimate, then finish and blend them in small batches to create unique flavourful Whiskeys. We carefully source and fill only the finest and freshest casks connecting with our family history for our 300 year old stone bonded Storehouse ‘The House of Contentment’. This is our modern take on the old Irish tradition of Whiskey Bonding – before the advent of big brands, merchants would refill emptied wine, port and sherry barrels with spirit from their local distillery to provide ‘house Whiskeys’ for their customers.
Our first releases are Ireland’s first vatted malt Whiskey which we’ve finished in really fresh Tawny Port casks – The Liberator Malt in Tawny Port and a lighter characterful premium blend, The Liberator Small Batch. Every year we have some Liberator Storehouse Specials – these are very small releases of interesting Whiskeys from our Storehouse and can be trials for new products, single cask releases or cask strength versions. All are gently cut over many weeks, not chill filtered or coloured or otherwise messed with.
The Liberator celebrates the legacy of our forebear Daniel O’Connell, the original campaigner for human rights, regardless of race, gender or religion and often hailed as the greatest ever Irishman, after whom many streets, bridges and buildings throughout Ireland is named. His passionate oratory and insistence on peaceful protest mobilised millions to ensure Irish voices were heard for the first time. From a noble family of traders and warriors, poets and smugglers, this determination to do things our own way informs everything we do.

Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world with 29 distilleries operating simultaneously in 1835. How had this remote fishing port and royal burgh become the epicentre of Scotland's greatest export? David Stirk reveals all in this engaging and well illustrated insight into the people who were the movers and shakers behind this huge industry. The origins lie in illicit distilling which was prevalent all over Kintyre in the late 18th century. Many women were involved in this business which made many ordinary folk very wealthy and out of these origins, the legal trade was established in 1817 with Campbeltown Distillery being the first of many. Over the course of the next two decades every street and corner in the burgh had a distillery or brewery built on it. The names were redolent of Kintyre history and placenames: Kinloch, Caledonian, Dalaruan, Lochhead, Longrow, Meadowburn, Burnside, Kintyre, Rieclachan, Union, Argyll, Glenramskill, Highland, Springbank and Albyn, to name only some. It is no idle boast that Campbeltown was the Victorian whisky capital of the world and just as great schemes rise, so do they fall. Ultimately the town's prosperity waned with the Great War, the depression, prohibition in the USA and the failure of local coal seams. Now only Springbank, Glen Scotia and Glen Gyle remain in production, solitary reminders of the once great whisky days of this Royal Burgh.

Venture 100 km Northwest of Belfast and you’ll find the town of Limavady tucked away in the Roe Valley, its coastal climate and fertile land the perfect setting for Irish whiskey production, which began in 1750 at the Limavady Distillery. At its peak, the distillery was producing 1.2 million litres per annum, every bottle a postcard from the town to whiskey drinkers across the world.
Of course, nothing worth having comes easy, and in the 1910s the Limavady Distillery was shuttered during the global downfall of Irish whiskey.
The years passed. Experience became memory, memory became legend. From that legend sprang an idea, and the new Limavady Whiskey was born.

The origins of Tullamore D.E.W. date back to 1829, established by Michael Molloy. On his death, the distillery eventually passed to his nephew, Bernard Daly who later appointed Daniel E. Williams as the distillery's General Manager. Under Williams's watchful eye, the distillery expanded and prospered, launching the whiskey bearing his initials (D.E.W.), Tullamore D.E.W..

Kilbeggan Distillery situated on the River Brosna in Kilbeggan, County Westmeath, Ireland. It is owned by Japanese Beam Suntory. A small pot still distillery, the licence to distil dates to 1757, a copy of which can be seen in the distillery.
Similar to many Irish distilleries, Kilbeggan endured financial difficulties during the early 20th century, and ceased operations in 1957. However, the licence was maintained and the distillery was later refurbished, with distilling recommencing on-site in 2007.

To mark the 200th anniversary of the world’s biggest Scotch whisky brand in 2020, Diageo’s head of whisky outreach, Dr Nicholas Morgan, penned a new book recounting the history behind Johnnie Walker.
A Long Stride is the first in-depth account of the history of blended Scotch whisky brand Johnnie Walker, which dates back to 1820.
The tome recounts how the brand survived late Victorian and Edwardian Britain, endured two World Wars and the Great Depression to achieve global success as the world’s best-selling Scotch whisky. Johnnie Walker was also said to have transformed the world of advertising.
A Long Stride is the result of years of research by Morgan and decades within the whisky industry. The hardback also details the development of Scotch whisky as a popular drink across the world.

Leading Irish visual artist, Leah Hewson, has released her latest work, but you won’t find it in a gallery or exhibition.
Partnering with Waterford Distillery, Hewson has createdBinary Assimilation – an original artwork for the bottle label of the distillery’s flagship single malt whisky coming this autumn: The Cuvéee.
Hewson’s aim was to celebrate the 'many layers and complexities within Waterford’s distillation process and the immense sensory experience of consumption’.
Waterford’s unique methodology is terroir-driven. The concept, which is commonly practised by the world’s greatest winemakers, is based on the principle that factors such as weather, soil, and microclimate influence the flavours found in barley and the whisky made from it.
To make its multiple award-winning Single Farm Origin whiskies, Waterford Distillery maintains the integrity of each crop of barley by harvesting, storing, malting and distilling it separately. Each Single Farm Origin has been produced separately using barley grown only on individual terroirs throughout the South of Ireland.
This individuality can be celebrated in its own right, but the ultimate aim is to layer these component spirits together – in precisely the same manner as a Grand Vin in Burgundy, or Grand Cuvée in Champagne – for ultimate complexity. The whole, greater than simply the sum of its parts.
This means – for the first time in whisky production anywhere – Waterford Distillery is assembling 23 different Single Farm Origin component single malts to create the definitive Waterford Whisky: The Cuvéee. It is a lodestar for the brand and a milestone bottling.
Leah Hewson’s original artwork reflects the intricate nature of such a milestone product. Two computer-generated images that are depicted in paint have been divided into strips and overlaid with opaque and transparent red and green stripes, and a neon squiggle in to create ’ambiguity and illusion’.
Leah Hewson said: ”Binary Assimilation celebrates the many layers and complexities of Waterford’s approach to whisky production. The brand’s scientific and methodical approach reflects my own and this provided an inspiration to sync art, flavour and character into something visually striking. By building the piece in layers through colour, I was able to create new dimensional effects to match the concept of The Cuvéee.”
Mark Reynier, Founder and CEO of Waterford Distillery said: “This is no ordinary whisky – it's our lodestar, a key milestone on our terroir-driven journey – our raison d'etre. Its vision, evolution derived from unprecedented logistics, merits an equally outstanding label. We commissioned one of Ireland’s leading artists, Leah Hewson, to create a contemporary image that was unlike another whisky label. One that shared the elemental construct, evoking vibrancy, a bold statement and a multi-layered feel. A label unlike any other, for a whisky unlike any other.”

In 1918, a young Japanese man with an ambition to make genuine whisky went alone to Scotland to unveil the secret of whisky making. He is Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka WhiskGiven the chance to go to Scotland, Masataka became the first Japanese ever to master how to make whisky. He enrolled at the University of Glasgow, took chemistry courses and then apprenticed at three Scotch distilleries. The young and passionate man was fortunate to learn first-hand from craftsmen and have practical trainings to master blending. The two notebooks filled with every detail later became Japan’s very first guide in whisky production.
In 1920 Masataka returned to Japan with his Scottish wife Jessie Roberta (Rita). The two had married earlier that year and Rita decided to immigrate to Japan to support her husband’s dream. However after returning to Japan, Masataka and Rita were heartbroken to find out that Settsu Shuzo, the company which invested in Masataka to learn in Scotland, had to abandon its plan to produce genuine whisky in Japan due to recessions after World War I.
In the meantime another company, Kotobukiya Limited (Suntory), was in search for someone who could conduct whisky production. Being the only Japanese who knew how to produce whisky at that time, Masataka was hired by Kotobukiya in 1923 to direct building the Yamazaki Distillery. There he led the project and devoted himself to producing Japan’s first genuine whisky.
After his ten year contract with Kotobukiya, Masataka decided to become independent to make his own ideal whisky. In 1934 he went north and built his first distillery in Yoichi, Hokkaido, a place - though inconveniently located - he had always considered to be the ideal site for him to make whisky. The environmental conditions of Yoichi were in many ways similar to those of Scotland with a cool climate, crisp air and appropriate humidity. The company first started producing apple products under the name of “Dai Nippon Kaju”, meaning the “Great Japanese Juice Company” while he was preparing to produce whisky. In 1936 the first pot still designed by Masataka and made in Japan was installed and started distillation. Finally in 1940 the first whisky from Nikka was launched. The brand name of this whisky was “NIKKA WHISKY”, short for "Nippon Kaju", which later became the name of the company itself.

Alfred Barnard’s comprehensive 1887 book The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom provides detailed coverage of 162 British distilleries, save Avoniel in East Belfast (founded 1882 by William Higgin, closed 1929) who declined his request. Barnard gives current enthusiasts an overview of past practices, however the man himself remains a mystery as he is missing from 1901 census!

We started this back in 2012/2013 with a archiving research team led by Prof. Moss from Glasgow university.
Starting with the list of the 100+ closed distilleries we first needed to know which ones we could legally register. There’s no point researching one if we can’t do anything with it at the end.
We then created a shorter list of distilleries which covered the regional differences of single malts. island, coastal, highland, lowland…
The team then went to work researching these closed distilleries to see what information was still available in a variety of archives around Scotland. Old excise records were used to gain an understanding of the casks used. Drawings, photographs, newspaper articles, whisky books (eg Barnard), old letters, maps were all used to get an understanding of the distillation, grain, yeast, location, peat, heating, water.
While doing all of this it was important to find out what the reputation of the whisky was. We wanted only distilleries which had a sterling reputation for making great whisky.
An added benefit of the research was a trove of wonderful and often colourful stories of the people associated with the distilleries at the time. Such as Peter Dawson and Alexander Bonthrone.
All the information is boiled down to create a very detailed profile of what the whisky should have tasted like originally. Then, as it’s not possible for us to recreate a 1800’s whisky exactly today. The team then theorises what the whisky would be like if they were still in operation today. A detailed profile of this modern day “homage” is then created. An expert blending team then has a rigorous (read heated argument) over which single malts need to be brought together to create this profile. In some instances secondary cask finishing is required to delivery the desired result.

This idea grew organically, fueled by a fascination with the unusual, supported by the growing availability of American craft whiskey and motivated by a desire to share the journey with others.
More than eight different types of American whiskeys comprise the 50 State Blend including fourteen bourbons, fourteen ryes, twelve single malts, one single malt rye, one Tennessee whiskey (duh!) one millet, one sorghum and six whiskies that don’t cleanly fit in any of those particular categories.
Each draft of the 50 State Blend keeps the ingredients constant but changes their proportions. Barrel-finishing was introduced to the process beginning with Draft #4.

Over the centuries loads of whiskey marks have disappeared. Some have endured, yet many have sunk against stiff competition and changing fashions. Now and again documentation of lost marques appearce to remind collectors what's been lost to history. Unusal bottles are found in out houses, signs are listed on online auction sites. Or toby jugs, ashtrays and other marketing ephemera appear at sunday markets, second hand shops or I saw you coming dealers.

Sliabh Liag Distillers is a family owned craft distillery and the first in Donegal for over 175 years. They have set out to reclaim the once proud (if somewhat illicit) distilling heritage of Donegal and relate the history, stories and culture of the area through our Irish Maritime Gin, An Dúlamán. The Legendary Dark Silkie has, on the nose, fresh apple, pipe tobacco and the comforting dry smoke of a peat fire. To taste, the whiskey is super soft with a salted-caramel sweetness, dark chocolate and liquorice, oak, leather and a dry spicy smoke. The finish is warming with smoky malt, peanut butter and melts away.
