A new documentary film by Cyle O’Donnell is set to depict the town of Quartzsite, AZ and its politics, rivalries and melodrama.
O’Donnell describes the film like this: “From allegations of corruption, police harassment and embezzlement, to a murder-for-hire scandal between the first two mayors, the tiny, desert town of Quartzsite, Arizona has seen conflict reserved only for major cities. Now Mike Roth and the police chief he says falsely arrested him are both running for sheriff in the 2020 elections.”
The complex story has been unfolding for years around 40 minutes south of Parker, and many of the original ‘characters’ are still around. But O’Donnell says he didn’t intend to be making the film at all.
“I actually stumbled onto this latest project while filming a travel and culture series I’ve been producing for the last ten years across 43 countries,” he told Parker Live. “Quartzsite is a hub for travelers, and so I was there in February last year filming the insider’s perspective of the nomadic movement when I met Rain Goldenbear. Her interview changed the course of the last year-and-a-half of my life which has essentially been interviewing nearly 60 witnesses across 11 Arizona towns, from judges and attorneys, to police chiefs and newspaper reporters, to politicians and council people, to activists that have ultimately become the centerpiece of the project. In fact, they even inspired the name of the film, Big Trouble in Little Quartzsite.”
The events in Quartzsite, O’Donnell believes, encapsulate many of the issues playing out across the nation today, from individual liberty to police power.
“It’s a microcosm for everything we’re seeing across national headlines right now; corruption, police brutality, systemic imbalances and so on. The film will discuss its early roots, but mostly focuses on the last 30 years,” he said.
A ‘camel driver’ known as Hi Jolly, a b-movie star, a gum museum, a naked bookseller, a murder-for-hire plot between two mayors, an armed march by a right-wing group on Town Hall, giant rock and gem shows, rumors of martial law, hirings and firings and allegations of corruption, Alex Jones and the front cover of the USA Today all factor into the history in Quartzsite. And the story is still ongoing.
“Mike Roth, who plays a major role in the film, is running for sheriff,” O’Donnell said. William Ponce is, too, who was an officer in Quartzsite back when Chief Jeff Gilbert was being accused by Roth of corruption. “So what I’d like to do is have this film released before October, just in time for the November elections. I’d like to see this film come out before then because it is packed full of very relevant and timely issues that face every Arizonan, and every American right now. And since Arizona has something of a history of making impactful statements on political issues throughout the states, I want this film to be a part of that discussion.”
Because he didn’t know what he was getting into, O’Donnell is over-budget on the documentary, which is now also a podcast. He’s offering supporters a free copy of the film in exchange for donations that will allow him to cover editing and other post-production costs.

We often have people coming through Parker, AZ on their travels across America, and often for a cause. In this case, Stephen Swift, an Oregon man, is on the last leg of a 6-year journey across the country.
Stephen began his journey in 2012 after losing his wife in a car crash, having his daughter in a coma for 3 months and being diagnosed with cancer for a second time. He took to the road and hasn’t lived at home since.
He travels with a bicycle trailer, a tent and some sleeping bags and says he’s doing it to support cancer patients and survivors, and to connect with them.

‘GMZ UTV Winter Nationals Casey Folks Parker 250 Presented By Polaris’ is the full name of the race that kicked off the 2018 Best In The Desert season in Parker, Arizona Saturday.
The entry list was 14 pages long and brought racers from across the United States in multiple classes of desert-appropriate vehicle, including bikes, quads and the hugely popular-and-growing-fast UTV class, which features extremely capable off-road vehicles with side-by-side seating arrangements and effective suspensions for racing on uneven terrain.
Motorsports podcast host and racer Jim Beaver said that sport UTVs such as the popular Polaris RZR have a lot of energy behind them, having grown in popularity among recreational users and the world of off-road racing.
“There’s hundreds of UTVs”, said Beaver, who was a competitor in the race, speaking live on KLPZ 1380am on Friday. “It’s been a big industry shift. The ATV industry is dead. Motorcycles are still strong but UTVs have taken off.”
One of the biggest names in off-road racing, Robby Gordon, was acting co-driver for his son Max in their UTV at this race, joining some of the other big names in the sport.
In the big races, the winning motorcyclist was Skyler Howes of St. George, UT. The winner of the quad class was driven by Josh Row of Lakeside, CA and Travis Dillon of Spring Valley, CA. The winner of the UTV race was Brandon Schueler of Phoenix, AZ, Miles Martin of Peoria, AZ and Pat Stone of Payson, AZ. Race results for all classes will be available when posted at bitd.com.
The event was renamed the ‘Casey Folks Parker 250’ after the founder of Best In The Desert racing association, which puts on the race, who died after suffering a stroke at the Parker race one year ago.
The schedule of events concluded Saturday night with the GMZ Race Products Awards Presentation at BlueWater Resort River’s Edge Cantina.

An “explosion” is how Sheriff’s Captain Curt Bagby described the collision of a white Corvette with a guardrail north of Parker last night. The collision happened so close to Bagby that the debris from the crash rained down on his vehicle, he told Parker Live.
Part of the car ended up on the other side of the guardrail and embankment, the other part landing upright on the roadway continuing to move. The driver did not need medical attention.
The incident was a reminder to Bagby of how suddenly someone can become a victim, and serves as a potent reminder of the importance of road safety.

Sheriff Bill Risen stopped by KLPZ’s studio Wednesday morning to talk about his department’s findings after checking in on vulnerable elderly people during the current extreme heat wave (listen above, 15 mins).
Risen said the deputies coordinated with Parker Police Department, Quartzsite Police Department and others Tuesday to try to reach some of the county’s most isolated population to ensure their welfare.
“Many of our elderly live out there by themselves,” Risen noted, adding that often there are homes placed on extremely rural desert roads, some of which are unnamed, and the deputies have to try to find them. Such isolation is life for many of La Paz County’s elderly who moved out to the desert to retire.
With temperatures of 123 degrees in Parker, AZ Tuesday, Risen said Captain Bagby had become concerned about the effects of the heat and the propensity of air conditioners to fail on days with extreme heat.
“We sent our deputies out,” Risen said. “We gave priority dispatch which means the dispatch of the deputies to check on the seniors took priority over many other different types of calls because this is a life or death situation.”
Risen told KLPZ listeners that they had discovered people who were in a bad way.
“We found two people who were in need of immediate aid,” he said. “Their air conditioning had quit working and they needed water. […] One was out in Wenden area, the other was down in Cibola. They had no A/C. They were surviving, I mean not comfortably, my deputies were dying with the heat when they went into their houses.”
Arrangements were in the process of being made to bring the subjects to Parker to stay at a motel while air conditioners were acquired, but the residents declined, according to Risen.
“They ultimately said no, it’s okay, we don’t want to be a bother.”
Risen appealed to the audience to help out by buying a case of bottled water and bringing it to the Sheriff’s Department on Laguna Avenue in Parker.
“It’s not a game, it’s a matter of them surviving. […] I will guarantee that all of it will go to the people it’s supposed to go to.”
He added that the deputies are checking on motorists stopped at the side of the road, too, ensuring they have water and that their vehicles are operational or they’re getting help.
At least two locals had already donated air conditioners by midday on Wednesday, with others sending fans and still others donating cash to buy new A/C units for the vulnerable living in the desert.
As of 10am, Bagby was on his way to deliver the first of the units to install in the home of a woman whose unit had stopped working.
Risen said deputies had also succumbed to heat exhaustion in the desert, and asked citizens to check that law enforcement officers are okay when they pass them in rural areas too.

The Parker Tube Float is back for 2017 with a whole new route! Starting at Buckskin Mountain State Park and floating along the Colorado River for 3 miles to the south end of La Paz County Park north of Parker, Arizona, floaters are in for a treat on Saturday, June 10th, 2017.
The new route makes for a shorter float, with after-float live music, food and drinks at the end in what the Parker Regional Chamber of Commerce & Tourism hopes will make for a new and improved event on the 40th anniversary of the original float back in 1977. Chamber Director Mary Hamilton told KLPZ 1380am the event should be safer, more enjoyable and better for the river’s regular users than any before it (listen by pressing the play button above – 40 mins).
A shuttle will be available for drivers, who will drop their group off at Buckskin Mountain State Park before driving their vehicle to the finish line at La Paz County Park and getting the shuttle upriver to join their group. Sheriff Bill Risen and Captain Curt Bagby stopped by the studio of KLPZ 1380am Monday to talk about the challenges of operating the La Paz County Sheriff’s Department on reduced funding.
Risen, elected in November, told Parker Live‘s John Wright that he has been asked to cut $30,000 per month from the department’s budget, and has not resolved how to do it yet. Earlier in the day, he addressed the Board of Supervisors, saying that his department had responded to 1,295 calls in the last 30 days, and cited numerous instances when patrol deputies were so thin on the ground that there was nobody at all on patrol in key districts.

The Parker Regional Chamber of Commerce and Tourism has announced a new route and big changes for the 2017 Parker Tube Float.
Making the announcement live on KLPZ 1380am, event organizer Mary Hamilton said that the Float will be held on June 10th, 2017 on an entirely new stretch of the Colorado River north of Parker.
“The route has been shortened and the event area has actually been relocated,” Hamilton told listeners. “We are launching at Buckskin Mountain State Park with the awesome cooperation of Arizona State Parks and the awesome cooperation of La Paz County Parks … going to the event area at La Paz County Park which is just south of Pirate’s Den, where we used to launch.”
Last year, complaints were received by several of the many homeowners on the old route, which passed by some large riverside neighborhoods. The concerns ranged from confrontations with floaters to litter and other issues. A common note was that the length of the Float contributed to these issues.
“By shortening the route, it will now be less than 3 miles instead of almost 8,” Hamilton said. “A shorter Float. There’s reasons it took people almost all day to float down the river and those reasons will be eliminated by this new route.”
Hamilton also said that there is a lot more interest from volunteers since last year’s event as the need for them has become more obvious. She appealed to the Parker community to get in touch with her office to volunteer at the next event, which is supported by many formal entities and agencies also. The need for assist vessels were mentioned in particular, with some boat companies coming from areas like Las Vegas to contribute as assist vessels at the event, and others still needed.
The cost of the event for floaters will go up from $10 to $20 for this year’s event, which Hamilton said could be thought of like a ticket to a music festival or concert.
“It’s a fundraiser,” she said, adding that the event’s revenues are a budget item for her organization, which supports commerce and tourism in the Parker area.
In another new change, shuttles will be provided for the drivers of private vehicles who want to drop their fellow participants off at Buckskin and then park at the finish line at La Paz County Park. The shuttles will bring those drivers north to Buckskin where entire groups can then float back to where their vehicles are parked.
“What we’re providing is a safe day to float the river, have some fun, enjoy the scenery, make some new friends,” Hamilton added.

Parker Live stopped by AWC's Parker Learning Center to chat for the first time with Dr. Daniel Corr, who will be the 9th President of Arizona Western College in La Paz and Yuma Counties in just a few months.
Press play to hear what Dr. Corr thinks the purpose of the college is, and how he thinks it can play an important role in the Parker area and the other communities served by AWC. Dr. Corr comes to the area from Scottsdale Community College. He was hired after an extensive 3-month search.
A reception was held Tuesday at the Parker Learning Center and was attended by community members, board members, staff and faculty. One attendee told Parker Live it was nice to meet Dr. Corr and that he seemed like a good fit for the college. Dr. Corr is expected to start formally in July.

An estimated 10,000 to 20,000 people are set to descend upon the small desert town of Quartzsite, AZ, and they aren't the usual customers.
A who's who of rock en español will appear on stage in Quartzsite, AZ at the Rock Fiesta festival on March 18th and 19th.
The first-time two-day festival is being called the 'Coachella of Latin rock' and brings with it lots of big-name headliners like Caifanes and Cafe Tacuba, bands that may not be familiar to the rest of the American music audience, and even less so to the snowbirds who make up the typical Quartzsite population in the winter months. Swap meets and RV gatherings this is not.
Most of the bands playing are Mexico-based with huge numbers of fans in the United States. The line-up includes many bands who are credited with defining the Latin American rock sound, including El Tri, Molotov, Panteon Rococo, Kinky, Maldita Vecinidad, PXNDX and others.
"We've sold tickets in 24 states," Alejandro Evoli, the festival's Associate Producer, told Parker Live. "We have sold tickets in Chicago, we have sold tickets in Texas, we have sold tickets in California, Alabama, Alaska, also in Puerto Rico."
A 155 feet-long main stage will be situated on the Desert Gardens Show Grounds in Quartzsite, with a late night dance tent featuring DJs, cantina, VIP sections and beer gardens close by. The main festival areas will be flanked by camping areas, including spaces with full RV hookups. There'll even be a water slide there - the largest in the world, according to Evoli.
"This is the first Latino rock festival with camping in the world," Evoli added. "So it's a unique experience."
2-day tickets on the festival's website start at $139 until March 14th, when they go up to $159. For single-day tickets, it's $85, going up to $95 on March 14th. The event runs from noon through 2am on March 18th and 19th. Attendees must be at least 18 years old. The website is rockfiesta.com.

Have you ever wondered what your real alcohol tolerance is, what your blood alcohol content (BAC) may look like after a typical night out at a bar, or how much it's safe to consume before you get behind the wheel or a car or boat?
With the help of the La Paz County Sheriff's Lieutenant Curt Bagby, we tested that tolerance with 4 volunteers at Roadrunner Floating Dock Bar on the Parker Strip.
Years ago in the Parker area, Sheriff's deputies would train for DUI enforcement with volunteers from the community. People would drink a pre-determined quantity of alcohol and deputies would use various techniques and breathalyzers to judge their impairment under the law. Sometimes people could 'hold their liquor' and not show signs of impairment, but still be over the legal limit. Other people would show signs of impairment but not be over .08, in which case they could still be arrested for being 'impaired to the slightest degree'. Other times people would know their limits, and be unimpaired and under the limit, and therefore within the law.
As the weather warms up and the Parker area demographics change in their annual way, parties for Spring Break, Memorial Day and the start of summer encourages more alcohol use. This special edition of the Parker Livecast was recorded at Roadrunner Floating Dock Bar & Restaurant, where Jeff was kind enough to sponsor the podcast in the interests of education and promoting safety with alcohol.
The cast includes 4 volunteers, 2 bartenders, Sheriff's Lieutenant Curt Bagby and Roadrunner owner Jeff McCormack, who was curious about his own tolerance also. We tested at certain intervals and recorded the time since the podcast began, how our volunteers felt (in a rating out of 10), their blood alcohol content (BAC) and approximately how many drinks they had consumed by that point. The results, as you'll hear, are interesting, and we've published a chart here too for your interest.
As the results show, everybody reacts differently to alcohol. Some feel it quickly and show immediate signs of impairment, even while technically under the legal driving limit. Others peak quickly and then slowly come down. Others take a while to show blood alcohol elevation, even having been obviously impaired for a while.

Can alcohol be a part of a healthy lifestyle? How can a DUI affect your insurance rates? What are the signs of alcohol impairment? How does this affect bartenders in their work?
Listeners will be able to tell that we ended up having a lot of fun, which is often the case at a bar like Roadrunner. But fun can be disarming and can encourage reckless behavior and unwise judgment. So the message out of this episode of the Parker Livecast is ultimately a very familiar one: Don't drink and drive!

Lieutenant Curt Bagby has been in law enforcement for over two decades, but he's never had a week like this: spent mostly dealing with calls from media outlets around the world who all want information about a completely unimportant story about the discovery of two Costco skeletons on the bed of the Colorado River north of Parker. Bagby has been on lots of TV and radio news shows this week after the story went viral.
