Your Everyday Health Hacker is helping you make small changes for big rewards in your health and wellness.
I'm Dr. Liza Leal, your everyday healthhacker and the Meridian Minute, and today we're talking about better sugar alternatives, hidden additives in sweeteners, and simple ways to support your health through nutrition.
At Meridian Medical Dental Healthcare powered by Meridian Health Institute, we really believe in caring for the entire body — from head to toe — and that includes what we're putting inside our bodies every day.
One of the most common questions I get from patients is:
"Doc, what sweetener should I use? The pink packet? The blue packet? The green packet?"
And honestly, it can get confusing because there are so many products on the market.
What I usually tell patients is this:
The less processed the sweetener, the better.
Now, some artificial sweeteners have been controversial over the years. Certain studies have raised concerns about possible long-term metabolic effects, gut microbiome disruption, increased cravings, or other health concerns when consumed heavily over time. The research is still evolving, so I always encourage moderation and reading labels carefully.
Two of my favorite alternatives are:
The key word is PURE.
A lot of commercial sweeteners marketed as "stevia" actually contain additives like:
Those additives may still affect blood sugar and insulin response, even if the front label says "zero sugar."
So flip the package over and read the ingredients.
Pure stevia leaf extract and monk fruit are popular because they generally do not spike blood sugar significantly, making them helpful for many people trying to improve metabolic health or reduce sugar intake.
Now let's talk about why this matters.
When we constantly spike our blood sugar with highly processed carbohydrates and sugars, our insulin levels rise. Over time, this can contribute to:
And many people notice that after a high-sugar meal or drink, they crash afterward and feel tired or sluggish.
One sweetener people ask me about a lot is erythritol.
Erythritol is a sugar alcohol commonly used in sugar-free products. It has very few calories and minimal impact on blood sugar for most people. However, some individuals may experience bloating or digestive discomfort, especially if they already struggle with IBS or sensitive digestion.
Nutrition is never one-size-fits-all.
Another thing I encourage patients to focus on is building a balanced breakfast instead of skipping meals entirely.
Now, intermittent fasting can work well for some people, but many patients unintentionally under-eat during the day and then overeat later at night. So instead of focusing only on fasting, I encourage patients to prioritize stable blood sugar and adequate protein intake.
Some easy breakfast ideas include:
I personally love chia pudding:
Just add chia seeds to almond milk or coconut milk, let it sit overnight, then add berries, nuts, or cinnamon in the morning.
Simple. Easy. Nutritious.
And speaking of nuts — while nuts do not contain cholesterol, some are higher in fats and calories than others, so portion size still matters. But many nuts, especially walnuts and almonds, may actually support heart health when eaten appropriately.
One of the biggest takeaways today is this:
Your body does best with foods that are closer to nature and less processed.
Read labels.
Watch hidden sugars.
Focus on protein and fiber.
And remember — small consistent choices create long-term health.
We'd love to hear from you in the comments:
What are your favorite healthy sugar alternatives or breakfast hacks?

Hi everyone, I’m Dr. Liza Leal, your host today for the Meridian Medical Dental Healthcare Podcast, powered by Meridian Health Institute — and I’m also known as your Everyday Health Hacker.
Today we’re talking about what’s really happening to your collagen, muscle, and hormones when you’re on GLP-1 medications — and more importantly, what you can do to stay looking healthy, strong, and vibrant while you lose weight.
A lot of people using GLP medications experience rapid fat loss. While that’s wonderful for metabolic health, many people start noticing changes in their skin. Their face can look more hollow or sallow, skin may feel thinner or less elastic, and they may notice sagging in areas like the jawline, neck, arms, or abdomen.
So let’s talk about how to prevent that.
🥩 Protein Is Non-Negotiable
The first thing I tell patients on GLPs is:
You must be eating enough protein.
At a minimum, most people need around 100 grams of protein per day, though that varies based on body size and muscle mass.
If someone isn’t eating enough, we may slow the titration of their GLP medication. Your body needs nutrients in order to regenerate tissue — especially collagen and muscle.
Even if you are taking collagen supplements, it often isn’t enough by itself during rapid weight loss.
Research shows that after significant weight reduction, facial collagen can decrease — which is why we have to be proactive.
🧬 Why Collagen Loss Happens
When fat volume decreases quickly, the structural support beneath the skin also declines. That can lead to:
This is sometimes nicknamed “Ozempic face,” but it’s really collagen loss combined with fat loss.
💡 How We Stimulate Collagen
One treatment we use is Ultherapy PRIME, an FDA-cleared ultrasound treatment that stimulates fibroblasts to produce collagen.
It can be used on the face, neck, décolleté, arms, abdomen, and other areas that need tightening.
We also use Radiesse, a calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) biostimulator. When hyper-diluted, it isn’t used as a filler — it’s used to stimulate your own collagen production and improve skin firmness and elasticity.
The goal is never to make you look “filled.” The goal is to help you look naturally supported and refreshed.
💪 Muscle Preservation = Metabolic Protection
People ask, “How do I keep muscle while losing weight?”
Two essentials:
✔ Protein
✔ Resistance training
If you’re over 40, lifting weights should be part of your weekly routine. Muscle supports metabolism, protects joints, and helps skin look better by maintaining structure underneath.
🔥 Thyroid & Weight Loss Resistance
Another hormone we have to talk about is the thyroid.
Your thyroid controls your metabolic rate. Some patients do everything right — exercise, eat well, follow their GLP plan — but still struggle with fatigue and slow weight loss.
They’re often told their labs are “normal.”
But there’s a difference between normal and optimal.
TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) may fall within a wide lab range, but many women feel best when it’s in a tighter, more optimal window. Personalized thyroid care can include different forms of T3 and T4 depending on the individual.
There is no one-size-fits-all thyroid plan. Personalized medicine is key.
💧 Hydration & GLP Medications
GLPs often blunt thirst signals, which can lead to dehydration.
Aim for:
Hydration supports metabolism, skin health, muscle function, and energy levels.
🧠 Hormones in Midlife (Women)
In your 40s and beyond, hormonal shifts can affect fat distribution, mood, and skin.
Many women experience:
Symptoms of progesterone decline may include:
Balancing hormones supports body composition, mood, and overall vitality.
🥗 How to Calculate Your Protein
Here’s a simple method:
So if you’re 140–180 pounds, you may need roughly 70–90+ grams daily, often closer to 100 grams during active weight loss.
Great sources include fish, lean meats, eggs, and protein smoothies.
✨ Collagen Nutrients
Look for high-quality, pharmaceutical-grade supplements to ensure proper dosing.
⚖️ Safe Pace of Weight Loss
Ideal pace: ½ to 1 pound per week
Some patients lose 2–4 pounds weekly at first — often due to reduced sugar cravings — which can be fine short-term if nutrition and muscle support are in place.
When plateaus occur, we reassess protein, inflammation in the diet, hydration, sleep, and exercise.
😴 Sleep & Airway Support
Sleep is essential for metabolic and hormonal balance.
We sometimes use lower jaw orthopedic splints to support proper jaw alignment and airway function, which can improve sleep quality and recovery.
🧬 Regenerative Therapies We Use
In addition to ultrasound and CaHA biostimulators, we may use:
These therapies stimulate natural regeneration.
✨ Final Takeaway
GLP-1 weight loss can be life-changing — but protecting your collagen, muscle, hydration, thyroid, hormones, and sleep is what helps you look and feel your best long-term.
At Meridian, we believe in whole-body, personalized care.

Many people ask why does my knee or hip hurt and the x-ray looks better than my spouse's x-ray who has more arthritis yet is more active than I am... Here is the key, with exercise we polish the joint so that it is a smooth surface, hence smoother ease of movement. Arthritis can come for many reasons, time, ageing, trauma, inflammatory illnesses caused by autoimmune illnesses and more. Then there is osteoporosis, bone is not being made faster than the breakdown of the bone causing thinning of the bone. To help you have a mobility and maintain mobility movement is key!
Listen today to Kelly Spencer https://www.silverfitnessonthego.com and Dr. Liza Leal your Everyday Health Hacker to help inspire you to move into the future.

Welcome back to the Every Day Health Hacker channel, today we will be discussing Mobility is Life with special guest. Kelly Spencer, owner of Silver Fitness. Many patients ask what type of exercise and how to get started on a wellness journey to prevent osteoporosis. The earlier the better, we always encourage. As we become mature in our life and our bones, we can loose muscle tone and loose bone strength, as our bones start to decrease the amount of new bone created our old bone literally sticks around. You have heard on our previous videos, that many treatments today for osteoporosis will just keep old bone around which can cause fracture, loss of teeth, many individuals even loose the dental implants they have had placed. Our bones are truly the foundation of our strength and to be able to lift up our arms to the top shelf of a counter, or step up stairs, we want to be able to do so comfortably with steadiness and strength.
Activity is life! Listen, Watch, Subscribe, Like and Comment. Outdated or Expired Medications are always a question at the doctor's office, especially when a patient is on a weekend outing away from major retail stores, they ask can this medication "still" be taken? It's a great question! Many studies have shown that tablets and capsules even 10 years are greater than 88% effective. Longer shelf lives of medications sitting in your cabinets loose their potency and efficacy.
A Law was passed in 1979 for pharmaceutical drug manufactures to require a date to 'guarantee' full potency and safety. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov (Drug expiry debate:the myth and the reality- PMC)
The Shelf Life Extension Program (SLEP) was started by the FDA for the Department of Defense to order to help cut costs https://www.fda.gov/emergency-preparedness-and-response/mcm-legal-regulatory-and-policy-framework/expiration-dating-extension
SLEP is used in order for preparedness for our military and natural disasters like earthquakes, viral outbreaks, hurricanes, tornados and more. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) oversees the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS). In helping to prepare for natural emergencies it is also what brings Emergency Use guidelines, we all remember that from COVID.

Update from 2023:
Heat exhaustion is less serious than heatstroke also sometimes called sunstroke.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion can occur quickly or over a few days.
Many patients will call complaining of leg cramping here is a list of symptoms:
Heat exhaustion can lead to:
- headaches
- muscle cramping
- nausea and vomiting
- excessive sweating and cold clammy skin
- on occasion a decreased pulse and feelings of weakness
- dizziness and sometimes fainting
- dark-colored urine can occur from dehydration
It's important to note that heat exhaustion can be alleviated with hydration and moving to cooler temperatures indoors.
Heatstroke is a life threatening medical emergency and your body's temperature can rise to 104 or more. It needs immediate treatment and we encourage you to call 911. Heat stroke affects the brain and nervous system which can lead to serious injury.
It also affects your organs. Immediate attention is required. When a person has reached this level they usually have stopped sweating, as their body's ability to cool is now disabled they are more likely to faint as well as have the symptoms arriving from heat exhaustion.
Instead of a weak pulse, the body responds with a racing heart beat.
They may appear confused, agitated, slurred speach and appear if they are drunk if they had been drinking alcohol. Alcohol and heat do not mix and a serious event can be mistaken for a drunken fool instead of a heat stroke that can cause a person to loose consciousness and even coma.
These are simple definitions to help you and your loved ones seek medical care. The key is to stay hydrated while out in the sun, use sunscreen and have shade available.
Remember to keep an eye out on your fur children as pets can also suffer from these same consequences and if the pavement, sand or walking is area is hot on your feet it is also hot on all of our four legged friends. Be safe, stay hydrated, wear sunscreen and foot protection for all of us two legged and four legged friends.

Were you referred to a specialist? Did you feel right at home with the specialist? How do doctors communicate these days? Drinking water is not the best way to stay hydrated, did you know you can flush out your needed electrolytes? Let's learn about hydration, electrolytes and if you are drinking enough or too much water.
Have you had a cancer screening at your last physical? Do you know how often you should have a cancer screening? Let's talk about breast, prostate and colon screening to just name a few and what does an abnormal test mean.
Every New Year, Many set out with new resolutions, let's consider a journey of health this year. Let's keep those resolutions and goals past February, when 70% loose their momentum. A great way to start your year, is with a physical, blood laboratories, saliva testing for hormones, EKG, Ultrasound of the heart and carotid dopplers.
Consider starting a lifestyle check today! Ask your physician…
We continue our prayers over Damar Hamlin, whom we many continue to speculate what could have happened. Let's be reminded our heart health can be in our control. Damar had a very rare incident, especially if it was the impact that caused the arrythmia, reports show 20 incidents a year of Commotio cordis. A highly unusal impact to the heart. Young people of all ages when entering sports are recommended to have an EKG, another uncommon arrythmia is called Wolffe Parkinson White Syndrome, which is an electrical dysfunction that is commonly seen on an EKG.
So this year, we hope you take the time to start the year new, take the time to have a physical with your doctor, establish a relationship with your doctor and dentist so you can on prevention instead of reaction to illness.
Did you know that most diseases can be seen in the gum tissue and mouth. We will discuss more in the next podcasts.

By restating, Let's make a better choice, it was easier to have smaller portion sizes and substitute the carbs for veggies. When it came to ice cream, which is still tasty consider #Haloicecream, @icream4rebels @eatlightened, there are so many to choose from and health protein and snacks are key when you are needing energy. When you have to take prednisone, many will complain of having the munchies and are gaining weight. Let's learn today how to combat those hormonal changes and help explain why a burst of energy occurs when taking prednisone. With Children, you may see them more active than they had been all month...yes, these are normal effects.
While Prednisone's side effects can be serious, used in the right amounts it is life altering and life saving. Many patients who are on long term physiological prednisone, actually do not loose weight, however their adrenal glands do not produce the hormone that makes cortisol, very similiar to prednisone and they need the medication to be able to function. Many patients with CMV or EBV also share that they felt normal while taking prednisone, because they finally had energy back. Learn more today how prednisone can affect you.

If your baby or child looses their appetite, runs a fever there are several concerns. For babies, look for nasal flaring and if the lung muscles look retracted (like their working hard) these symptoms are serious and your child may need to be sent to an ER. Many children have RSV and suffer from mild symptoms, however it can turn serious quickly. If this should happen to you, be sure you ask for a nebulizer, with medication shortages we have seen inhalers prescribed to three year olds. So glad these parents call their doctor as we recommend a nebulizer, holding the mask up to the baby or child to breath in, It's okay if they are crying. Crying is great for the lungs and the medication can quickly get into the lungs to help the child breath better.
The flu is around this year more than ever, like Covid and RSV
it spreads easily, washing your hands continues to be important as well as covering your sneezes and coughs. We hope today's podcast shares an insight that helps you ask questions to your doctor in a time of need.

During the pandemic public became wary of shortages of many things, including toilet paper. Today, the concern for medication is a real concern. What should you do if you receive a call from your doctor's office or pharmacy that your needed medication is no longer available? We will cover a few immediate options that you can take. 1. Consider different dosages, for example if you normally receive a 30 mg dose of Adderall, you may have to consider a 20 and a 10 mg or three 10 mg tablets as your dosage. The difficulty that arises from this change of prescription is that it is recorded in many states' Prescription Monitoring Program. Which means that instead of dispense 30 tablets you may have to receive 90 tablets of a smaller dosage. These numbers are all reported to the government monitoring program, which many patients are leery of.
While we encourage natural supplements for our patients many may need ADD/ADHD medication to stay concentrated in school or their workplace. If you find you have encountered a shortage immediately ask if there is an alternative dosage your doctor can e-script in and immediately ask for the pharmacist to cancel the previous one, by doing so this helps protect you and your doctor's license.
Other shortages have included: a few months ago, we found difficulty with a shortage of a popular type 2 diabetic medication, it was mainly caused by viral videos of weight loss a benefit of the medication for many patients used on label and off-label.
Hypertensive medications have had to be changed due to re-calls.
While many patients found these issues frustrating, we shared with each patient this is a new opportunity to find alternative methods of therapy and treatment and many patients were able to change there lifestyle and have weight loss, with the effect of no longer needing the medication. While patients with ADD/ADHD found new opportunities in their career that kept them focused and excited about their endeavors with a new drive in knowing that they were no longer dependent on the medication they took all through Middle School and High School.
Every obstacle in medication, we find new solutions and new studies help us daily to be better doctors and better providers. We hope today's episode provides food for thought. Holiday stress can cause you to clench and grind your smile causing jaw pain and headaches, this can be easily relieved by equilibrating your teeth so that all the teeth are balanced. As we all know balance is key, without balance we may consume more sugar and carbs to feel better for just the moment. With a good nights sleep we feel better, smile more and share joy. However if you are waking up with a headache, you are not balanced and your subconscious mind is on over drive with worries of the world. We want your Supra-conscious awareness to live your dreams and if you are in stress it’s hard to dream and you are consumed with worry.
We specialize in taking care of the whole body from head to toe. A few things to immediately consider is a physical, laboratory blood studies to determine how your insides are working, a dental exam and hygiene. Did you know that the health of your teeth can share what is going on systemically? The plaque on your teeth is the same plaque in your heart and we want you to stay healthy and avoid both.
A few other considerations for yourself include If you haven’t had a mammogram, schedule it today and that goes along with a colonoscopy if you are over 45 or earlier or if you have a family history of colon cancer or polyps.
Holidays are for making lasting memories and to be able to do that we must take care of our health and maybe gift yourself to a little Botox, filler or collagen supplements. Did you know Botox can also help your headaches and help reduce tension. When individuals are grinding their teeth and clenching due to stress we can help change the physiological pathways with Botox and other ‘cocktails’ for health that can even be IV vitamin therapy to help you have the energy you deserve this holiday season. We hope todays episode brings more thoughts and questions and know we want to be your resource for all your medical and dental needs. Email your questions at info@everydayhealthhacker.com

Many patients over 50 and under desire to maintain, preserve, uplift and produce collagen for natural results that turn back the hands of time. Let's discuss more than just fillers and neurotoxins, Ultherapy is a technology that helps rebuild the infrastructure of our facial features and body. Immediately, most will recognize a tightness and over 90 days collagen will fill in. Most patients will start with an area usually around the eyes, after a follow up visit, they will add the lower face, decollete and other parts of the body. Yes, it stimulates collagen growth in the dermal layers and to help accentuate the results we recommend a liquid collagen to help provide nutrients.

If your mom, dad or elderly loved one is having memory issues, wether dementia, Alzheimer's small vessel disease that causes short term memory loss, when should you decide on memory care and is assisted living an option.
Many with memory disorders can move to an assisted living facility, they have monitors on the floor so that if the patient tries to walk the front desk is alerted for immediate assistance. Even in assisted living or memory care, patients can wear a device that is similiar to a life alert that they can push for assistance. However, many individuals may forget how to ask for help and that is when it is best to have laser movement devices that can alert the front desk.
Many patient families ask when it is best to move their parents many prefer to be by their friends and have a unique support system with family, church and friends that allows them to maintain their independence. Others, may become more difficult as they refuse to take medications that allows the family to help them. It is one situation that can be better handled with assisted and memory care alternatives. For our patients one of the easiest transitions is from hospital, to rehabilitation to assisted living or memory care. However, it's not always that easy. Families become overwhelmed as their loved ones forget how to drive, get lost or wonder. In these instances having a family meeting with the doctor they trust can help them with this transition as we all want our loved ones to be safe in every environment.
Family members want to keep their loved ones safe and recently on the news we have seen and heard devastating incidences of loved ones being harmed, this is absolutely criminal and should you suspect it you should report it to the authorities for investigation and criminal charges. Family members should be their to care for loved ones as they care for them as children and not take advantage whether financial or physical. It's a journey that if you need assistance in the care of your loved ones, know their are specialists to help you.
There are specialty care centers that have counselors on staff to help with the transition for the patient and the family. In today's episode we will discuss a few scenarios and answer questions from emails received. If you have a question please email us at info@everydayhealthhacker.com

COVID strains continue to change, similiar to how we prepare for flu season, we know approximately 6 months prior what the strains may be and are predicted based on what is known in the moment. COVID is no different.
What we are sharing with our patients is to continue to carry that hand sanitizer, remove yourself from an area that a person is coughing. Just recently, a patient traveled to a meeting, their VP gave a seminar and shared while blowing their nose that they have a summer cold, never testing for COVID and never taking precautions to protect those that were in the small conference room. Guess who all got COVID: yes yes those in the conference room. So teachers, and business owners and personnel, if you think someone is ill ask to move to a different place in the room, if they won't take precautions. Offer Over the Counter Covid tests, if you haven't ordered your free supply, order at COVID.gov/tests or call 1-800-232-0233 Illness has led to a shortage of employees, and we want our children to have the opportunity to learn so let's prepare them the best way we know how, which means eating breakfast, lunch and dinner. Remember some children do not have that opportunity. Our grandchildren bring an extra sandwich because at 9 they already see the differences some children do not have and they want to help. Ask the teacher what you can help with, while many teachers are unable to publicly ask for supplies through amazon, consider dropping off sanitizer, tissue and paper towels and ask what else they may need.
Let's encourage vitamins in your children, keeping their immune system up is the best way to learn and stay healthy. We adults need to do the same. For a list of vitamins take a look or listen at our podcast comments on COVID - Recovery 101
Vit D3 2000- 5000 iu daily
Vit C 500–1,000 mg twice a day
Quercetin 250 mg/day
Zinc 30–40 mg/day (elemental zinc)
Melatonin 6 mg before bedtime (causes drowsiness)
2 x daily – gargle (do not swallow) with oxyfresh a non-alcohol mouth rinse.
Oral hygiene- brushing your teeth and flossing is imperative to gums a oral systemic understanding of your health starts with your mouth. See your dentist and hygiene every 3 to 4 months. Your smile is one of your greatest assets! (See our straight talk video and podcast)

The Return of Covid, yes, it's Back and on the rampage. Patients have been callling with positive home covid tests and suffering from different symptoms. The key part we want to share is even if you are vaccinated you can still get COVID. We see symptoms with this variant of sore throat, severe headache, cough and runny nose. Some also complain of body aches, chills and fever, not all the symptoms are in every person. Most think it is a cold, however it is much more than just a cold that can leave patients fatigued, exhausted and tired of being sick and tired.
While Paxlovid is an option for patients the concern is that it can have an interaction with other medications. We continue to share a cocktail of different medications with patients and are having success with quick recovery. If you think you have COVID, find out the best time to test and the best treatments in this podcast. With Dr. Liza Leal, your @everydayhealthhacker and Mike Herzing, renowned radio host and founder of @LetstalkWheels and our @meridianhealthinstitute co-host.

Our Next Episode we will discuss COVID Long Hauler Syndrome, stay tuned....
Heat exhaustion is less serious than heatstroke also sometimes called sunstroke. Symptoms of heat exhaustion can occur quickly or over a few days.
Many patients will call complaining of leg cramping here is a list of symptoms:
Heat exhaustion can lead to: * headaches * muscle cramping * nausea and vomiting * excessive sweating and cold clammy skin * on occasion a decreased pulse and feelings of weakness * dizziness and sometimes fainting * dark-colored urine can occur from dehydration
MonkeyPox is a rare disease that is transmissible through direct contact and possibly secretions. It was first described in 1958 and the first case was in 1970. Most recently in this known outbreak the first case in the United States was from a person who had traveled from Nigeria . Monkeypox is from the viral class orthopoxvirus. Similiar to the vareola virus and is considered milder than small pox however has been known to cause death.
While some experts share that the origination is unknown it has similar characteristics to viruses that existed over 3000 years ago found in Egyptian mummies others have described it from research colonies of monkeys that later spread to humans in 1970.
There is no known treatment however it is vary rare and usually a self limited disease lasting 2-4 weeks with a 5-21 day incubation period. Symptoms are fever, headache, muscle aches and backache., swollen lymph nodes., chills, and exhaustion. Currently doctors, infectious disease specialists are using anti-virals to help mitigate symptoms however there are no known FDA approved treatments specific for MonkeyPox.

Exhausted, wanting to take a nap everyday at the same time. Waking up in the morning after 8 hours of sleep and feel like you never slept. We have answers for you, today we will discuss indepth common hormonal problems, sleep apnea causes that your ENT does not discuss with you that are super simple to alleviate. What would you do if you could sleep 45 minutes more. Everyday patients share their overwhelm with exhaustion, from work fatigue to physical and emotional fatigue. A few secrets we will discuss include testing for chronic fatigue and common viruses that can cause your exhaustion called EBV or Ebstein Barr Virus and CMV (Cytomeglovirus), very similiar in characteristics of symptoms as Mono, which most people have heard from. Did you know these virus' steal your ATP, if you can remember back in school days it takes ATP to make energy. Every time you move a muscle ATP is being released, and without it you are exhausted and may also feel muscle fatigue and weakness. Testing for these are a simple blood test.
Another common cause of fatigue is thyroid disorders, any age can suffer from dry skin, constipation, hair loss and extreme fatigue and weight gain in many. A simple test looking at your thyroid profile can bring valuable information to quickly correct the hormonal balance. Many patients may have normal TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) but it is not optimal. I prefer my patients to be between 0.5-1.5 not the typical 0.5 to 5 which most of our patients have significant symptoms at 3.0. In addition, we want to look at the balance of T4, T3 Thyroid Uptake of T3 and TPO which is an inflammatory reaction of antibodies, helping healthcare professionals determine the causes of the problem. Be sure to ask your doctor to test for Vitamin D and Progesterone because the balance between these is very important for optimal health.

Do you find your self covering your smile or holding one side of your face when you are in zoom meetings. Since the pandemic we hear from patients... they are concerned about their smile, their appearance, their jaw line. It comes from every direction of concern. Your Self Image IS important, We want you to #Smile. Today we will discuss the importance of self image and well being. Your smile is more than just straight teeth, think of it this way. Many after staring at a computer screen find themselves with a headache, shoulders are tired and their neck is strained. Did you know by equilibrating your bite (balancing your bite) you can rid yourself of the tension. Do you catch yourself clenching your teeth or your loved one says you are snoring at night, there is a solution.
First if you clench and grid your teeth, let's remediate that habit with a simple splint, it's actually called an orthognathic orthotic device, many think of it as a night guard, however it's far from something that can be bought at a store. This device can help give you a facelift without cosmetic surgery. As we age and loose collagen, we are also loosing bone, which makes are lips turn down, Chins drop and the square jawline desired by many men is no longer there. We have an answer and it's simple.
The first step is a panoramic X-ray, the second the #secretweapon 3-D Imaging called #itero. Itero, can help doctors and dentists team together to build your smile, straighten your teeth, equilibrate your bite, which ultimately rid your body of headaches, multiple sinus infections, ringing in your ears, as well as jaw, shoulder, neck and back pain.
The second is if you snore, and or no longer want to wear a CPAP. Guess what we have new answers and new secrets to share with you that are comfortable appliances that will help align your bite, (jaw) so you can have a good night sleep without feeling clausterphobic.
Do you see your cheecks and facial features loosing collagen. Along with a dental face lift there is also an medical enhancement called ultherapy, a laser ultrasound therapy that lift, tightens and firms. It's a comfortable procedure that you can do on your lunch back and be back in front of the camera.
The key is small changes bring #bigrewards and together we hope to be your resource for medical and dental questions and needs. We truly mean it - ask us anything.
We want to thank #teammeridian, @MikeHerzing and @Everydayhealthhacker, Dr. Liza Leal for sharing the information today. Don't forget your free gift of of toothpaste with the following link http://ltl.is/5yczjnf.

Dr. Liza Leal discusses her latest medical journey through major surgery to help encourage you and your family. Even with the best laid plans sometimes there are hiccups and you have to know what to do when that occurs. After 4 years in a wheelchair with Rheumatoid Arthritis, let’s just say things happen. Today we want to share with you 3 steps to a faster recovery.
Step 1. Have a written plan for your surgery and post -op surgery
a. Do you get nauseous easily- be sure your anesthesiologist and all the doctors on your team are aware of it. b. Are you sensitive to pain medications, many may not be aware that many times less pain medication works well. It is important to have a plan for your medications and a relationship with your primary care physician if you need someone who knows you to advocate for you. It’s what we do in primary care and your pre-surgery visit. c. Bring your favorite pillow, blanket and home pictures to help you focus on recovery. d. Bring a few of your favorite snacks like bone broth #Bariwise, oatmeal, or #jello e. Ask when you arrive to your room if a snack is available and order your meals it can take hours depending on the time you are released from the post-op recovery room. f. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and don’t be afraid to ask for an administrator or patient liason if you feel you are not being heard. It’s okay, having surgery and being a patient, you are very vulnerable and it is uncomfortable to release control. g. Nurses are healers -- be kind they are there to help you recover and have a heart and passion for caring for you h. Know all the numbers to your doctor’s after hour and or on-call person. You may need to call them if there is a transfer order that was not communicated between the nurses leaving a gap in care. Your doctor wants all their orders followed and they are your advocate and the maestro to your best care. i. If there is an on call doctor, be sure to have them visit with you. In today’s technology a video conference is easy at 3 am. It’s what we do as doctor’s we are here to serve and emergencies are emergencies.
Step 2 Discharge Planning
a. Be sure to have a discharge plan with an appointment scheduled for your follow up. b. If you have multiple surgeons and doctor’s to follow up with be sure all are scheduled before you leave. c. If you need rehabilitation and physical therapy have your appointments scheduled a case manager or social worker is key to helping you navigate these areas and your personal advocate whether a spouse, family member, or close friend can be sure these are all part of the check off list in getting ready to go home.
Step 3 Going Home
a. Bring a pillow for your ride home if you need to be situated to be more comfortable b. Stay positive, Be kind c. Have your medications delivered prior to your surgery or after your surgery use a delivery service. Many pharmacies will offer a delivery service and it is helpful during a time you may not be able to drive. d. Have a few meal plans already to go so you do not have to think about the basics, grocery shopping before your hospital dates if it is schedules is very helpful otherwise #instacart is a Godsend. How do weather changes affect your body, does your tendons, muscles and joints hurt. It is because changes in barometric pressure can cause your tissue to
expand and contract. In joint spaces this expansion has a reaction of building fluid and as it fights the reaction the fluid with in the compartment causes more pain. Many times when a front comes in patients will complain of tension and migraine headaches being worse. It is very similiar this little bit of inflammation becomes over the top and the body can not stay ahead of it so inflammation occurs and where there is inflammation there is pain. To help alleviate these issues, it is understanding weather and barometric pressure and utilizing splint therapy and tape techniques to help decrease the pressure and fluid build up caused by inflammation.

Thank you to our co-host Mike Herzing of Nationally Syndicated Let's Talk Wheels and our entire team at Meridian Health Institute and Meridian Medical Dental Healthcare.
Sugar we all desire sugar at sometime and some people crave it on a daily basis. Many offices you will see a candy bowl at the corner of someones desk, the key is don't do it. Sugar is the number one culprit to causing inflammation in your body. Inflammation causes disease, ageing and if you have an auto-immune condition it can cause your body to reject everything you want to do. But how do you stay away from sugar. Many people have heard of all types of diets, the key we recommend is.... it is not a diet, it is a lifestyle and together we can learn the five basic tools to gain a healthier you.
Step 1 No smoking
Step 2 No alcohol
Step 3 No Sugar
Step 4 Carbohydrate grams decrease to under 50 preferably 25
Step 5 No diary, there are no orange cows, so if you are going to have dairy choose a different source, Coconut milk, Almond milk, goat cheese, white cheese is much healthier choice if you have to have cheese.
So many people ask how do you do it, is it will power, yes and no. We combine the lifestyle with meditation and prayer. When you feed your body the nutrients it needs you heal faster, feel better and your energy improves.
So how do we get started? When I was 203 lbs in a wheel chair and gloomy the key for me was attitude and a can do attitude, once the attitude came the desire to change was inherent. It can be done. Today we will talk about how to convert some of your favorite dishes, If you like cookies, cupcakes and cake, how about a new way to bake? Not a baker, there are new bakeries that are all a healthier choice using Cassava flour or almond flour, using swerve or monk fruit. You just have to try it to like it. My favorite sweeter is from NuNaturals called Nu-Stevia no bitter taste in my opinion.
When patients are first getting started we recommend a few changes and after 21 days we make additional changes. Keeping a diary we help you to transform your likes to new likes and loves. Who would have guessed I crave strawberries instead of a bowl of ice cream. Yes it can be done, you have to train your brain and your way of thinking. You have a powerful tool and you can do it and we can do it together.
In today's episode I also mentioned my favorite pandemic cooking book by Natasha Newton: The Southern Keto Cookbook, did I say keto, well yes I did, while many of the keto foods do not meet the guidelines of a anti-inflammatory way of life, it does give great tips on cooking habits.
Start with making a list of the foods you like then counter the thought with a better choice. For example, chocolate pudding, or chocolate mousse. Have you ever tried Avocado chocolate mousse, it's yummy and it taste like a Chocolate Pot, which is from my favorite resteraunt in Park City, Utah, try it you will like it.

We look forward to caring for you and your family and we want you to expect a difference!
Doctors are human and in these almost past two years of COVID, fatigue is evident and evident all around. Recently, I went with a family member to a specialist appointment, it truly was not expected. It was with a doctor, I send many of my patients too and speak to all the time on the phone regarding patient care. I was surprised, embarassed as the doctor, turned the table from the concern of my loved one to his latest travels and expertise regarding radio frequency helicopters, mind you the person he was talking to was an experienced pilot, has a drone of every size, radio frequency helicopters of all sizes and loves anything mechanical, Oh by the way did I mention this family member is also a surgeon. Yes, it was a shock and surprise. Here is how we turned around an uncomfortable encounter with a highly referred doctor, with such grace by my family member. The patient, who happened to be the pilot and surgeon politely shared and encouraged the referring doctor. It was almost as if we were in a sales meeting looking for the best benefits of the product and taking the time to learn about the other person. Yes, it should have been the other way around. How did it turn around? What turned it around is that after much questioning of his hobbies, the surgeon whom we were referred to finally opened his eyes and his ears, and understood the patient knew a little more than he did. Of course, I wanted to say "gotcha" as this was beautiful turning point where we finally saw the caring person I have always spoken to caring for mutual patients and now a family member. What I am trying to relay is that every doctor does not have bedside manners, they have knowledge and they have skill, however you the patient and the loved one of the patient does not have to put up with their bad day. Give them grace, share forgiveness, and know it is okay to ask your primary doctor for another referral. Remember it is the rule of 25%. 25% of people, you will like instantly, 25% you will learn to like 25% you will not like and 25% will never like you and it's okay. Know who you are and know there are many fish in the sea. The key is to be prepared, ask questions and if it is going side ways, patience is a virtue and give grace, then talk with your primary care physician to find the right fit for you. Never be shy and Never feel you have to accept the referral. You have choices and you have the right to fire a doctor, a topic for another episode.

Many patients ask when should they have vaccines. Did you know that there is a schedule of vaccines from birth through all ages of life. As adults, many are unaware of adult vaccines. If you decide to become a healthcare professional you learn all about them early as you can not enter into professional school without them. If you are unaware if you have had a specific vaccine ask your primary care physician to check a titer. A titer will check antibody levels to see if the vaccine is active. This is most common for patients checking immunity for Hepatitis B and most recently for COVID.
Yes, Yes, we can check your bodies immunity. The best way to keep immunity is to be informed of your options and educate you and your family for the best steps you can take. This also includes nutrition, exercise and supplements if you are not eating enough fruits and vegetables your immune system becomes compromised. If you have questions, want to improve your health, or just need a reboot for your health, know that you can ask us any question any time....
Please like, comment and subscribe we look forward to being your personal resource of information for you and your family @everydayhealthhacker powered by @meridianhealthinstitute

Patient Director Adriana Solis, discussed Straight Talk! What's healthier about straighter teeth! The connection between your health and misaligned teeth. Misaligned teeth can lead to premature wear, tooth loss, gum disease, and build up of bacteria associated with bigger problems including heart disease. Bacteria and its byproducts trigger an inflammatory response in the body. It is hard to remove plaque and bacteria from misaligned teeth. This can lead to inflamed gums, soft tissue damage, receding gums, pockets between the teeth and gums, bone loss and tooth loss. Poorly aligned teeth can put extra stress and pressure on the teeth and jawbone. This stress and pressure can also lead to cold sensitivity, chipped or cracked teeth, TMJ, muscle pain, jaw pain and headaches. Problems start in your mouth and can spread to the rest of the body. Severe gum infections increase the risk of Heart Disease, Stroke, Lung Diseases, Alzheimer's Disease, problems with Pregnancy and complications with Diabetes.

Today we will discuss if ingredients should have a tax. The sugar tax also known as the “soda tax" is generally considered to be a per ounce excise tax on drinks sweetened with sugar. Taxes also apply to iced teas, fruit drinks, sports drinks, and most other drinks with added sugar. Should ingredients be taxed? Is this the start of taxes for all ingredients?
Beverage taxes are unpopular. It’s difficult to understand how common grocery items will cause a tax burden falling on families. Not only do they disproportionately hurt working families and small businesses, it does not help individuals become healthier either. America's leading beverage companies believe there is a better way they already have multiple beverages with ‘zero’ sugar choices and they are tasty. Beverage companies are helping to educate and encourage consumers to think about balance when choosing a beverage and providing healthier choices. The key word is choice. We encourage healthy options and if you have questions please do not hesitate to reach out to us or email at Info@everydayhealthhacker.com for additional information on nutritional guidelines and plans for you. It seems that every where you turn there is a new supplement or vitamin on the market. You go online and you see all the assortments and choices. One of the things that we want to clarify today is how to choose the best one for you and your family. The key is to note that the supplements are not regulated and therefore as long as the average is the particular milligrams it states in the bottle it’s considered legal. For instance if a container of vitamin C says 500 mg the average of the container must be 500 mg therefore one may be 250 mg another one 750 mg as long as the average is 500 mg it’s considered a consumable product. One of those frequent ask questions is the regulation of CBD and in the United States CBD will be license starting in 2022 by the USDA. Many supplements on the market are also in the non-prescription PDR which is the physicians desk reference. Why not every vitamin company can afford to market in the PDR it doesn’t mean that there are not good supplements on the market. When I was in a wheelchair, I had a very unbalanced diet. After months and months of research I found the plan and of course in time many of those companies are no longer here and therefore as a physician I choose to continue to study, research and recommend for my family, family of patients individualized protocols that meets their needs. Some of our patients have leaky gut and require liquid or chewable supplement. We recommend aloecure to many of them to help coat the esophagus and stomach balance the pH and improve their health. others prefer to take a tablet or capsule. To those who are desiring weight loss many times we recommend MCM Nutrition exogenous ketones. Everyone needs to hydrate and we encourage to drink DURT
A play on words the increase hydration, chelates improves your natural ability of immunity with a balanced pH and more.

Every Day Health Hacker is the brainchild of Dr. Liza Leal. Dr. Leal is Board Certified in family medicine and is the Chief Medical Officer of Meridian Medical -Dental and the Meridian Health Institute. Dr. Leal promotes self-care and shows people how to take charge of their health, something we all need. It’s my pleasure to introduce Dr. Liza Leal. Doc, folks like me, have been looking to take control of their health for years, and I want you to explain again this week about the Learning Lab and Questions Gene writes: Being a baby boomer has sure been a ride. For the last two years, I have lived with chronic pain and find myself struggling to get off of opioids. It started with knee pain, and then if it’s not one thing, it’s another. I can’t seem to get away from them. I was (still try to be) an active male; however, joint pain has impacted my lifestyle. How can I wean myself off of pain meds and better health? Discuss Learning Lab and MCM Nutrition and how that relates. Also
Discuss opioid crisis in America. Addiction vs.Physiologic Dependence
Leanne writes: I’m forty-five years old and feel like I am sixty. My problem is that I can’t seem to get away from the dinner table. My job makes dieting harder because I have to entertain clients at dinner at least once a week. I find myself stress eating, and it all becomes a vicious cycle. I need to lose at least twenty fivepounds. How can I get started? Emma writes: I am forty-four years old and the youngest of four children. Cancer seems to run in my family. My mother passed from Cancer, my oldest sister passed from it, and both my brothers had a brush with it. I have been Cancer free (so far), and I am athletic and relatively healthy. You talked last week about boosting your immune system. Would that help improve my odds? If so, how do I get started with this? Craig writes: I am a 38-year-old male in good health. With the pandemic, I have been washing my hands A LOT! I heard in the past that it isn’t always good to wash your hands all the time. Is that still true? Is there a time when I need to be especially careful? Thanks for the help! Join us at the website everydayhealthhacker.com and learning lab.

Questions: 1) I’m a 65 YO Male in relatively good health. Considering the pandemic and how some people feel about vaccinations, would it be wise to get flu and pneumonia shots? And should I go for the COVID vaccine when it gets here? 2) I’m a 40-year-old single mother of two school-age children. Both are attending school in person. Is there a way to boost my (our) immune system? I can’t afford to get sick and could use a little direction. 3) I’m a 55-year-old single male in fair health. Since I don’t eat that well, I have decided to start taking vitamin supplements. The question is: Where do I buy them? Do I go to a nutrition store, or are the things at Wal Mart good enough? If I am going to put something in my body, I want it to be healthy. Do you have a place for me to get QUALITY products? Ok, folks, we are out of time. I want to thank Dr. Leal for taking the time today to help us on the path to better health.
