We are two teachers using student made podcasts to nurture students' reading, writing and communication skills.
By this time in the school year the students have now developed a daily habit of writing in my class. They also know whether it is a composition or a short response to a question that they must write in complete sentences and fully answer the question to show understanding. They are now accostume to sharing their writing with their classmates. I hope you enjoy their examples of light energy.

This week we have been discussing the forms of energy for our second grade science. I used this platform for this week's episode to check for their understanding. The students had to write a summary of the three forms of energy and give an example of each form of energy. I used this to check their understanding of the concept. Most students were right on target. I did however have some that had some misconceptions that I will have to address and reteach. The students were excited to share and it was a great way to check for understanding of the topic as well as to encourage their writing, reading fluency, and reading accuracy.

Our class completed a research about community workers. They did a brainstorm to decide on what community worker that they would like to write about. After selecting their community worker they were grouped with other students researching the same community worker in their class. Then they began to find out the answers to three questions. They had to find out what their community worker did and why it was important to the community. They also researched the equipment that their community worker needed to perform their job. Lastly, they had to find out the average yearly salary of their community worker. After the research the students wrote a rough draft, edited, and published their stories. Writing is a powerful way for kids to grow in writing. They can use their imaginations and the writing skills that I have taught them to communicate with others and to reflect on their own learning. After using daily writing prompts you will notice an improvement in their writing and in their abilities to present their ideas. The students had a choice in which journal prompt to share. They also practice reading it before each recording to increase their confidence and reading fluency. My next goal is to increase the details that the students add to their journal entries so that their writing becomes more interesting and shows more feeling and descriptions.

In this episode the 2nd grade students share the stories they wrote on the first day of school about their favorite food. I used this writing sample to get an idea of the writing skills that they possessed at the beginning of the school year. Before they read their stories we had a mini-lesson to create a chart titled "Presenting Checklist". I also modeled how to read in front of an audience.
