The Mädels With a Microphone investigate a German pop culture phenomenon, the TV cop show Tatort (meaning crime scene), which has been running on German TV for over 30 years.
Every Sunday evening at 8:15 pm, Germans love nothing better than to gather in their local bar to watch various fictional detectives solve fictional crimes in a different German, Swiss or Austrian city each week.

A woman is sitting alone at the hotel bar with a glass of something orange in front of her. You wouldn’t know straight away that she’s a prostitute. She’s wearing glasses and her clothes look simple. The bar’s other customers do not bring sex to mind, necessarily. Middle aged couples, a few men having a drink. It’s one of these expensive, soulless hotels that cater to business people, not far from Marble Arch.

LONDON, Mon, 29 Nov—I’d been eagerly anticipating the Phillip Pullman-Neil Gaiman event on Monday evening, only to see, when I arrived at the Cambridge Theatre’s entrance, an A4 piece of paper tacked on it apologising for Phillip Pullman’s absence, as he was ill. Still, there was Neil Gaiman to look forward to, and as stands-ins: American writer Audrey Niffenegger (The Time Traveler’s Wife), who read “The Three Snake Leaves” from Philip Pullman’s new collection of Grimm Tales(27 Sep/UK, 8 Nov/US; Penguin)—you can also hear Phillip Pullman’s own reading of this on BBC Radio 3—and award-winning American children’s author Meg Rosoff.

Cover illustration by Filipe Jardim, a Brazillian artist who specialises in fashion and travel illustration, spending half of his year in his native city of Rio de Janeiro and the rest circulating the globe. Filipe first made his mark when invited to produce Louis Vuitton’s Rio de Janeiro “Carnet de Voyage”. This beautifully produced book was the perfect showcase for his work and resulted in further commissions for Hermes and Issa. Recently he was asked to provide illustrations to launch the Wall Street Tiffany store in New York, whilst continuing editorial work for The New Yorker and S/N magazine. It was 20 years ago that British photographer Russell Young first lent his eye to celebrity culture. The assignment was photographing George Michael for the sleeve of an album called Faith. That job launched a career and soon Russell was shooting musicians like Morrissey, Bjork, Springsteen, Dylan, REM, New Order, The Smiths, Diana Ross, and many other celebrities. The next natural step was directing music videos; Russell directed a hundred music videos during the heyday of MTV.
Russell Young's art works are currently on show at London Gallery, Whisper Gallery, 27/28 EastCastle Street, W1W 8DH, by appointment only.

Swedish born Mikaela Westerholm began her photographer career while studying fashion and media in London. After moving to L.A. to continue her studies and gain more experience, she returned to Stockholm, assisting some of Sweden’s most respected photographers. Having freelanced for several clients such as Puma, international online PR firm Edelman and the National Theatre of Sweden, she settled at company called Peas, which is a commercial photo studio based in Stockholm. To keep her creativity flowing she does side projects such as this one, so she won't get too caught up in the commercial world. The Hugo Awards have been running for over fifty years and remain the best known literary award for science fiction writing. The nominees for this year were announced recently, so this week I’ve been reading the entries for the Best Short Story category.
The awards are named after Hugo Gernsback, founding editor of the cult sci-fi magazine Amazing Stories, which was pivotal in popularising the genre in the mid-20th century.
