We are not supported by The Jewish Federation but are an integral part of the community keeping our rich culture and heritage very much alive. On the Yiddish Segment, Rochelle commemorates "The Night of the Murdered Poets" On August 12th 1952, 71 years ago, Stalin's government executed 13 Jewish political, cultural, and intellectual figures of the Soviet Union. They had previously been arrested on trumped up charges of treason and espionage and were found guilty in a sham trial.Among those shot that night were 5 well known Yiddish writers and poets, Dovid Hofshteyn, Leyb Kvitko, Itzik Fefer, Peretz Markish and Dovid Bergelson.

his week on the first segment of The Jewish Radio Hour, Rochelle Zucker features a new release by Yale Strom and Hot Pstromi called The Wolf and the Lamb - Live at the Shakh. It was recorded live in the historic and revered Shakh Synagogue of Holešov, Czech Republic.Yale Strom is a violinist, composer, and one of the world's leading ethnographer-artists of klezmer music and history. His extensive ethnographic research in Eastern Europe plays an integral part in forming the repertoire of his klezmer band Hot Pstromi. " While the songs within draw strongly from klezmer traditions, in line with the band’s origins, an innate musical and, indeed, societal curiosity reveals some surprising secrets of the past. By blending the old and original, Yale Strom & Hot Pstromi create something bold and unique. Much like the Jewish communities of Europe forged new bonds and friendships with neighbours through trade and cultural exchange, it shows that exploration can lead to greater things and enrich the lives of many. The Jewish music world lost an important voice. Lori Cahan-Simon passed away on July 28th. Both segments of today's show are dedicated to her memory. Lori was a singer, an artist and a teacher. Her diverse repertoire knew no bounds, encompassing a wide range of genres such as Yiddish and Klezmer tunes, classic American standards, R&B, blues, ballads and rock ‘n’ roll. However, in the context of the Jewish Radio Hour, her important work was in meticulously researching and recording Yiddish yontev songs. Her recordings have been the mainstay of many of our shows - especially for Peysakh and Khanike. Rochelle has selected a collection of her music. Even though Khanuke is months away, she has decided to include several songs for that holiday as they epitomize the joy and the spirit of Lori and her music.

The Yiddish segment is dedicated to the memory of Roz Usiskin Z"l. Roz was a Yiddishist as well as a political and social activist. Roz's activism included many progressive issues related to human rights, peace and social justice. She was passionate about preserving Yiddish language and culture.

The Ashkenaz Festival in Toronto is starting August 30th. In the second half hour Rochelle focuses mainly on some of the artists appearing at the festival who perform in Yiddish. On the Yiddish Segment, Rochelle commemorates "The Night of the Murdered Poets" On August 12th 1952, 70 years ago, Stalin's government executed 13 Jewish political, cultural, and intellectual figures of the Soviet Union. They had previously been arrested on trumped up charges of treason and espionage and were found guilty in a sham trial.Among those shot that night were 5 well known Yiddish writers and poets, Dovid Hofshteyn, Leyb Kvitko, Itzik Fefer, Peretz Markish and Dovid Bergelson.

As the horrific war in Ukraine continues the Ukrainian people are in our thoughts. On the Yiddish sement, Rochelle spotlights a recording called Night Music From a Neighboring Village. The artists are Michael Alpert and Julian Kytasty. Alpert is a Klemer and ethnomusicologist, while Kytasty is a specialist on the bandura who researches and performs traditional Ukrainian music on traditional instruments. The recording pairs and explores two musical traditions—East European Jewish and Ukrainian—that have existed side by side and nourished each other for centuries. Through music the artists explore the commonalities that connect us as well as the differences that have divided us. As the horrific war in Ukraine continues, Rochelle Zucker has again decided to feature songs about places in the country and by artists from there. Lenka has set to music and recorded poems that her grandmother Anna Hana Friesová (1901-1987) wrote in the Terezin (Theresienstadt) concentration camp where she was imprisoned during World War II. The songs are in Czech, but you will hear background information and explanations by Lenka herself.

Purim begins on March 16th. This week to celebrate the joyous holiday Osher Kraut hosts both segments and presents a lively "yontevdike" program.
The Megilla of Itzik Manger has become a tradition here on The Jewish Radio Hour.
In his version of the Megilla, Manger tried to present familiar material through a modernist lens. It is a retelling of the story of Esther set in contemporary Eastern Europe. Manger even introduces a new character into the narrative: Fastrigosso, Esther's jilted lover and a member of the Needles and Thread Tailors' Union, who conspires to assassinate King Ahashverosh to win back Esther's affections.

Rochelle Zucker dedicates the Yiddish segment to the memory of David Botwinik Z"L who passed away on February 9th at the age of 101. Botwinik was born in Vilne Lithuania and was a longtime resident of Montreal. He was a music composer, choral director and music educator. He was also a staunch Yiddishist The show features some of Botwinik's compositions as well as parts of an interview Rochelle did with him in 2010.

Jewish Radio is a Winnipeg Institution predating many of the others. It was started almost 80 years ago by Moshe Cantor, continued by Noah (Noyakh) Witman. After Witman's death, for almost 20 years, until his retirement in 2019, Sid Halpern served as Executive Producer. He was the "neshome" - the heart and soul of The Jewish Radio Hour. It was a labour of love. As well as hosting interesting and informative programs, he organized things and secured financing so we could continue. The show is hosted by a group of volunteers. We are not supported by The Jewish Federation but are an integral part of The Community keeping our rich culture and Heritage very much alive.

Thursday January 27th is International Holocaust Remembrance Day - a day designated by the United Nations pay tribute to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust. In 2022, the theme guiding the United Nations Holocaust remembrance and education is “Memory, Dignity and Justice”.

On January 27 at 6 PM CST, KlezKanada will present the world premiere of Silent Tears: The Last Yiddish Tango. This concert will feature new Yiddish songs based on testimonies of Canadian Holocaust survivors, composed by Rebekah Wolkstein and performed by the leading musicians Aviva Chernick, Lenka Lichtenberg, Olga Mieleszczuk, & Payadora Tango.

Sheva was born in Winnipeg and is a graduate of the I.L. Peretz Folk School. She studied at The Yiddish Teachers' Seminary, Columbia University and CUNY. She is a well known Yiddish educator and writer. Sheva held the position of Executive Director of the League For Yiddish and editor of their magazine Afn Shvel for 15 years.
The discussion will be about Sheva"s latest project : The Golden Peacock: The Voice of the Yiddish Writer Bilingual / Di Goldene Pave: Dos Kol fun dem Yidishn Shrayber.The Golden Peacock features 12 Yiddish writers reading from their work, both poetry and prose as well as English translations. Included are texts of theworks in Yiddish English along with biographies and Sheva's illuminating notes.
On the program Sheva will discuss highlights of the work and background and you will hear some of the selections from the recordings.
