It was 2 AM, and I found myself staring at the ceiling, my heart aching for someone who had left my life months ago. I couldn’t stop thinking about them, replaying memories in my mind, wishing things had turned out differently, and praying, “God, please remove this person from my heart! Please help me stop loving them, caring about them, or hoping they will love me back someday?”

Have you ever been there? Stuck in the painful cycle of loving someone who doesn’t love you back? If so, today, I want to share with you the surprising truth about why you can’t get someone out of your heart, and what you can do about it.

As human beings, you are wired for love and connection. Your survival depends on it. It is through others that you experience yourself, and it is by loving others that you learn to love yourself. Your heart, the organ of love and connection, longs to play with other hearts for the sake of loving, having fun, and feeling joyfully connected. But what happens when the person you love doesn’t love you back? How do you get someone out of your heart? Is that even possible?

The Paradox of Love and ConnectionThe more you chase after other’s love, the less loved you feel. When you buy into the idea that only through one person can you experience the love your heart longs for, you begin to look for love in all the wrong places. You become addicted to incessantly thinking about them, doing anything to gain their love and attention, and wondering how different it would be if they loved you back.

But the truth is, no other person can fulfill what is ultimately a longing of your heart and soul. Only the Divine, God, or the Presence of Love can do that.

The Addiction of Unrequited LoveMy experience has taught me, through many painful heartbreaks, that each time I make another person the source of my love, I set myself up for failure and become enslaved to them. It’s a vicious cycle of addiction that keeps you trapped in the pain of unrequited love.

When you pin all your hopes and dreams on one person, expecting them to fulfill your deepest needs and desires, you give away your power. You become dependent on their validation, their attention, their affection. You start to believe that you are only worthy of love if this person chooses you.

But the truth is, no one person can be the source of your love and happiness. That’s too much pressure to put on any relationship. When you make someone else responsible for your emotional well-being, you set yourself up for disappointment and heartbreak.

The addiction of unrequited love is fueled by fantasy and illusion. You become obsessed with the idea of who you want this person to be, rather than seeing them for who they really are. You convince yourself that if you just love them enough, they will change their mind and love you back. But this is a dangerous game to play.

The more you chase after someone who doesn’t reciprocate your feelings, the more you lose yourself in the process. You start to neglect your own needs and desires, sacrificing your self-respect and dignity in the pursuit of a love that may never be returned.

But there is a way out of this painful cycle.

How to Get Someone Out of Your HeartThe journey starts with recognizing that you are the source of your own love and happiness. You cannot find fulfillment through another person; you can only find it within yourself.

The path to healing from the addiction of unrequited love is a journey of self-discovery and self-love. It requires you to face your fears, your insecurities, and your limiting beliefs. It invites you to cultivate a deep sense of compassion and forgiveness, both for yourself and for others.

Only when you learn to love yourself fully and unconditionally can you truly love another person in a healthy and balanced way. Only when you release your grip on the fantasy of what you think love should look like can you open yourself up to the reality of what love actually is.

Out of Your Head and Into Your Heart: A Journey of HealingI remember a time when I was head over heels in love with someone who didn’t feel the same way about me. I spent months pining for them, convinced that if I just tried harder, they would see how much I cared. But the more I chased after them, the further away they seemed to drift. It wasn’t until I finally surrendered my attachment and brought this person fully into my heart that I found peace. I realized that I had been using them to avoid facing my own insecurities and fears.

The path to get someone out of your heart is to bring them fully into your heart. It means moving from your head into your heart and having the courage to face your own wounds and take responsibility for your healing. This means embracing the totality of your experience with them – the good, the bad, and the ugly – and reframing it through the higher perspective the heart offers you.

Here are the steps I recommend you follow:

  1. Appreciate the gifts and lessons that this person brought into your life, even if the relationship didn’t turn out as you hoped.
  2. Feel compassion for yourself and for them, recognizing that you are all doing the best you can with the tools you have.
  3. Release and let go of your attachment to the story you told yourself about this relationship and how it was supposed to be.
  4. Forgive yourself for any mistakes you made and forgive them for any pain they may have caused you. Forgiveness sets you and them free.
  5. Be humble enough to admit that you cannot control or change another person, no matter how much you may want to. You did your best, and it’s time to move on.
  6. Understand that your worth and lovability do not depend on this person’s feelings for you.
  7. Have the valor to open your heart again, trusting that the right person will come along when the time is right.

Keeping Everyone in Your Heart: Christ’s TeachingsIn the Gospel, Christ taught his disciples to “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). He didn’t say to befriend them, or date them or marry them. He was inviting them to keep everyone – even those who have caused them pain – in their hearts. Not on a pedestal or in a pit, but in a place of compassion, forgiveness, and understanding.

The same principle applies to getting someone out of your heart. You don’t have to forget the pain they caused you or pretend that everything is okay. But you can choose to release the anger, resentment, and bitterness that keeps you tied to them. You can choose to see them through the eyes of love, recognizing that they, too, are learning and growing on their own journey.

By keeping everyone in your heart, you free yourself from the burden of unresolved emotions and create space for new, healthy relationships to enter your life. You align yourself with the unconditional love that is the essence of the Divine, and you open yourself up to the healing power of forgiveness.

Final ThoughtsTrying to get someone out of your heart and stop caring for them is nearly impossible. The heart wants what the heart wants, which is to love and feel connected to others. So trying to get them out of your heart is to go against your own nature.

Getting someone out of your heart is not about forgetting them or pretending the relationship never happened. It’s about bringing them fully into your heart, appreciating the lessons learned, and releasing the attachment that causes suffering. When you align yourself with the unconditional love that is the essence of the Divine, you open yourself up to the healing power of forgiveness and the possibility of new, fulfilling relationships.

Finally, remember that once connected in your heart, even if you never see each other again in this lifetime, you’ll always remain connected through the Infinite Loving Heart of God. The love you gave didn’t go to waste. Exponentially multiplied, it will find its way back to you in ways you never imagined.

So, trust the journey and know that you are worthy of the love your heart desires. You are worthy of love no matter what. Keep your heart open, and let love find its way back to you.

In a world that often prioritizes conformity and playing it safe, following your heart has become a revolutionary act. It requires leaving behind the familiar and comfortable, and facing emotional challenges like pain, grief, and uncertainty head-on. But as the great poet Rumi once said, “The wound is the place where the light enters you.” By embracing these challenges as opportunities for growth, we can unlock a life beyond our wildest dreams.

This week, I’d like to offer some practical tools and advice to help you navigate the journey of following your heart. We’ll explore how to leave behind your past self, cope with the inability to turn back, and surrender to a higher possibility. Because now more than ever, the world needs more people like you who are willing to step into their authentic truth and live a life of purpose. Let’s dive in.

When my Portuguese grandfathers left the Island of Madeira in 1860 to settle in Georgetown, British Guyana, they knew in their hearts that they might never be able to return to their homeland or see their loved ones again. Sadly, they never did. However, more than a hundred years later, many future generations of Gonsalves visit the island of Madeira each year to honor their courageous ancestors who ventured into an uncertain New World.

Their story reminds us that following your heart often means making difficult sacrifices. But it’s through these sacrifices that we discover what truly matters and find the strength to create a life of meaning. As you embark on your own journey, remember that you’re part of a long lineage of brave souls who dared to listen to their inner voice and followed their hearts.

Leaving Behind Your Past SelfThe first major challenge of following your heart is leaving behind the person you once were, so that you can become the person you’re destined to be. As writer Brianna Wiest put it, “The price of authenticity is the discomfort of shedding your old skin.”

As you move forward in the direction of your heart, expect everything that is not aligned with your new path to fall away. This can be painful, as it may include releasing behaviors, places, and people who no longer resonate with who you’re becoming. However, by practicing self-compassion, cultivating a support system, and setting clear boundaries, you can navigate this process with greater ease.

Practical advice:

  • Practice self-compassion: Recognize that letting go is a necessary part of growth. Be gentle with yourself and avoid self-judgment.
  • Cultivate a support system: Surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you to be your best self. Their encouragement will give you strength.
  • Set boundaries: Protect your time and energy by saying no to anything that doesn’t align with your values or support your growth.
  • Create a ritual: Develop a ritual to honor your past self and consciously let go, like writing a letter of gratitude and release or holding a small ceremony. This helps create a sense of closure.

Embracing the Inability to Turn BackIn addition to shedding your past self, another difficulty of following your heart is accepting that you can’t turn back. With each step forward, the old life you knew fades further into the distance. But as author Cheryl Strayed wrote, “Forward is the direction of real life.”

Even if you could go back, you’d likely realize that you no longer belong in that old world. You’ve grown too much. The only way out is through – and on the other side awaits a life greater than you ever imagined possible. By embracing change, practicing heart coherence, and leaning on your support system, you’ll find the courage to keep going, even when the path ahead is uncertain.

Practical advice:

  • Embrace change: Trust that change is bringing you closer to your ultimate destiny, even if it feels uncomfortable in the moment. Reframe challenges as opportunities for growth and learning.
  • Practice heart coherence: Regularly tune into your heart through practices like deep breathing, meditation, and spending time in nature. This will help you stay grounded and connected to your inner wisdom. Start with just 5 minutes a day and build up from there.
  • Lean on your support system: During times of doubt, turn to your loved ones and community for strength and encouragement. Be vulnerable and honest about your struggles. Remember that you don’t have to walk this path alone.
  • Celebrate small victories: Acknowledge and celebrate each step forward, no matter how small. This will help build momentum and remind you that you’re making progress, even when things feel hard.

Surrendering to a Higher PossibilityPerhaps the most challenging part of following your heart is surrendering your plans and desires to a higher possibility. This means releasing attachment to a specific outcome and trusting that God, Spirit, or the universe has a plan for you – one that’s even better than you could imagine.

In the words of spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle, “Sometimes surrender means giving up trying to understand and becoming comfortable with not knowing.” It’s in the space of not knowing that we create room for miracles to unfold.

As you navigate the ups and downs of following your heart, remember that your pain, grief, and uncertainty are not just part of the human experience – they’re signs that you’re evolving into a higher version of yourself. Keep showing up, asking for guidance, and trusting the journey. Little by little, you’ll discover that you’re being led to a life beyond your wildest dreams.

Practical advice:

  • Practice self-care: Prioritize your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being through practices like getting enough sleep, eating nourishing foods, moving your body, and spending time in nature.
  • Ask for guidance: Lean into your faith and trust that a higher power is supporting you. Pray, meditate, journal, or simply have conversations with the divine, asking for clarity and direction.
  • Trust the process: Cultivate patience and trust that even the challenges are happening for your highest good. Surrender to the mystery and allow yourself to be pleasantly surprised.
  • Look for signs: Pay attention to synchronicities, repeated messages, or sudden opportunities that arise. These can be signs that you’re on the right path, even if it’s not the path you originally envisioned.
  • Practice acceptance: When faced with unexpected challenges or detours, practice accepting what is. Resisting reality only creates more suffering. Instead, focus on what you can control – your own attitude and actions.

Following Your Heart: My Personal Journey I’ve experienced the challenges and rewards of following my heart firsthand. In 2007, I made the difficult decision to leave behind my comfortable life in Los Angeles and start over in South Africa.

As I gave up my apartment, said goodbye to friends, and boarded the plane, I knew there was no going back. In South Africa, everything was unfamiliar at first. But as I embraced the discomfort, a new version of myself began to emerge. It was painful to let go of my old identity, but as I surrendered, new possibilities and opportunities arose.

Step by step, I was led to where I am today – living in southern Spain, running a professional coaching business, and dedicated to helping others follow their hearts. The more I’ve followed my own heart, the better guide I’ve become for others on the path.

As a Heart Leader, our jobs is not to create more followers, but to create more leaders. Because the world doesn’t need more people blindly following others – it needs more brave individuals who are willing to follow their own hearts, forge new paths, and shine their unique lights.

The World Needs Your LightFollowing your heart will always involve some degree of discomfort. And in a world that’s so full of darkness, we desperately need more people who are willing to do the hard thing and shine their light.

So as you continue on your path, remember this: Your courage ripples out and touches more lives than you can possibly know. By following your heart, facing discomfort, and embracing your authentic truth, you give others permission to do the same. You become a way-shower, a pioneer, a light in the darkness.

So keep listening to the whispers of your heart. Surrender to the mystery of life. Trust the journey. And know that with each step along your heart path, you’re not only healing yourself – you’re helping to heal the world.

Picture this: You’ve just achieved a significant milestone in your career, yet instead of feeling proud and accomplished, you’re consumed by an overwhelming sense of self-doubt and fear. You feel unworthy. You question whether you truly deserve your success, wondering when others will finally expose you as a fraud. If this scenario feels all too familiar, you’re not alone. This is the essence of impostor syndrome, a psychological phenomenon that affects countless individuals across various fields and walks of life.

But what if I told you that these feelings of inadequacy, far from being a hindrance, could actually be a powerful catalyst for personal growth and transformation? In this article, we’ll explore the surprising truth about impostor syndrome and discover how, by fully embracing it, you can unlock your true potential and lead yourself towards a path of authentic success and fulfillment.

The Roots of Impostor SyndromeTo understand impostor syndrome, let’s first explore its origins. The term was coined in 1978 by psychologists Pauline Rose Clance and Suzanne Imes. They observed that many high-achieving individuals, particularly women, were unable to internalize and accept their success. Despite compelling evidence of their competence, these individuals attributed their accomplishments to external factors such as luck, timing, or deception, rather than their own abilities and efforts.

Since then, research has shown that impostor syndrome is a pervasive and universal experience, affecting people from all backgrounds and professions. In fact, the higher the level of success, the greater the impostor syndrome. A study conducted by the International Journal of Behavioral Science found that an estimated 70% of individuals will experience impostor syndrome at some point in their lives. However, the true scope of the issue is often underestimated, and its potential as a tool for growth is rarely discussed.

The Impostor Cycle and Its Surprising UpsideOne of the trickiest aspects of impostor syndrome is the self-perpetuating cycle it creates. When faced with a new challenge or opportunity, you may respond in one of two ways: over-preparation or procrastination. You either invest excessive time and energy into perfecting your work, or you avoid the task entirely, paralyzed by the fear of failure. In either case, the outcome is rarely satisfying, as you attribute your success to your efforts rather than your abilities, or you berate yourself for not meeting your own unrealistic standards.

However, what if we could reframe the impostor cycle as an opportunity for growth? The very fact that impostor syndrome arises when we’re stepping outside our comfort zones suggests that it could be a sign of feelings of vulnerability and shame that need to be embraced. By recognizing impostor syndrome as an opportunity for healing and growth, you can approach it with curiosity and self-compassion rather than fear and self-judgment.

The Shame ConnectionBrené Brown, a renowned researcher and author, has extensively studied shame and vulnerability. Her work sheds light on the connection between imposter syndrome and shame. In her book “Daring Greatly,” she writes, “Shame is the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we are flawed and therefore unworthy of love and belonging.”

When you experience imposter syndrome, you may feel exposed and vulnerable, as if your flaws and shortcomings are on display for all to see. This sense of vulnerability often triggers feelings of shame, leading you to believe that you are not good enough or deserving of your success. However, Brown’s research shows that vulnerability is not a weakness, but rather a strength. By embracing vulnerability and leaning into the discomfort, you open yourself up to authentic connection, growth, and transformation.

My Personal JourneyI remember when I first started my coaching business. I had years of experience and training under my belt, but I still felt like an impostor. I would compare myself to other coaches who had been in the industry longer or had a larger following, and I would feel as if I wasn’t good enough. It took a lot of inner work and self-reflection to realize that these feelings were a natural part of the growth process.

I had to learn to embrace my own unique voice and approach, even if it felt uncomfortable at times. I had to remind myself that I was on a journey of mastery, and that every experience, whether it felt like a success or a failure, was an opportunity to learn and improve. As I began to lean into the impostor feelings and view them as a sign of growth, I found that I was able to show up more fully and authentically in my work.

The Way Out is ThroughThe key to overcoming imposter syndrome lies in understanding that the way out is through. Rather than trying to avoid or suppress these feelings of inadequacy, vulnerability, or shame, you must learn to embrace them as a natural part of the growth process. When you fully immerse yourself in the present moment, doing what you love and aligning your actions with your values and aspirations, there is no room for self-doubt, fear, or shame.

For example, when I became fully present with each client and truly listened to their problems, focusing on serving them and providing the best coaching I could offer, the feelings of vulnerability, inadequacy, or shame completely disappeared in that moment. I was fully aligned with the kind of coach I wanted to be.

A Symptom of MisalignmentImpostor syndrome is often a symptom of misalignment – a sign that you’re not living in accordance with your true self or the person you’ve chosen to be. When you feel unworthy or undeserving of success, or when you haven’t yet become the person you know you’re meant to be, it’s a clear indication that you need to realign yourself mentally, emotionally, and through your actions.

It’s important to acknowledge that if you feel like an impostor, there may be some truth to those feelings. However, rather than letting them define you, use them as a catalyst for self-reflection and growth. Ask yourself:

  • In what ways am I not being true to myself?
  • What actions can I take to align my life with my values and aspirations?

By validating your feelings and using them as a guide, you can begin to bridge the gap between who you are and who you want to be.

Don’t Fake it Until You Make ItWe all have to start somewhere, gradually growing into the person we aspire to be. As T. Harv Eker often says, every master was once a disaster. Instead of falling into the trap of “fake it until you make it,” how about adopting a mindset of “feel it until you become it”?

Feeling it until you become it means that if you want to be a successful writer, for example, you must do what successful writers do, think like a successful writer, develop the habits of a successful writer, and feel like a successful writer. The feeling is the key and an indication that you’re fully aligned.

When you’re fully in alignment with who you’ve chosen to be, as Steve Chandler, a renowned author and coach, reminds us, impostor syndrome becomes just a passing thought you release whenever it shows up in your mind.

Strategies for Overcoming Impostor SyndromeWhile impostor syndrome can feel like an insurmountable obstacle, there are practical steps you can take to break free from its grip and cultivate a more authentic and empowered sense of self.

Here are seven strategies to consider:

Acknowledge your feelings: The first step in overcoming impostor syndrome is to recognize and validate your experiences. When feelings of vulnerability, self-doubt, unworthiness, or shame arise, take a moment to acknowledge them without judgment. Place a hand over your heart, take a series of deep breaths, and deeply allow these feelings. Remember that these feelings are a normal part of the human experience and do not define your worth or abilities.

Practice self-inquiry: Set aside time for an honest conversation with yourself. Ask yourself questions like:

  • From what part of my personality are these thoughts or feelings coming from? Is it from the part of me that feels I’m not enough, or another part of me, perhaps wounded by certain traumas or past experiences?
  • What capacities, skills, or abilities do I feel I’m lacking?
  • How can I develop and master these new skills?

By bringing greater awareness to the root causes of your impostor syndrome, you can develop targeted strategies to address them. If you discover that your feelings stem from a perceived lack of skills or preparedness, take proactive steps to develop those areas and build your confidence.

Reframe your thoughts: Challenge the negative self-talk and beliefs that fuel impostor syndrome. Instead of focusing on your perceived inadequacies, shift your attention to your strengths, accomplishments, and the value you bring to the table. Practice self-compassion and treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would extend to a friend.

Embrace a growth mindset: Adopt a mindset that views challenges and setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth, rather than evidence of failure. Embrace the idea that your abilities are not fixed, but can be developed and expanded through effort and practice. As Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck notes, “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point.”

Seek support: Surround yourself with a supportive network of friends, family, mentors, and colleagues who believe in you and can provide encouragement and guidance. Share your experiences with trusted confidants and seek out communities where you can connect with others who have faced similar challenges. Remember that you are not alone in this struggle, and that there is strength in vulnerability and connection.

Align your actions with your values: When you find yourself thinking, “I’m such a fraud,” take a moment to pause and realign yourself with your true self. Say to yourself, “Cancel. I am not subject to these feelings of shame. I release them and refuse them. I am an infinite being, worthy of success.” By aligning your actions with your values and aspirations, you can begin to transcend the limiting beliefs that hold you back.

Celebrate your successes: Make a habit of acknowledging and celebrating your achievements, no matter how small they may seem. Keep a journal or record of your accomplishments and refer to it when impostor feelings arise. Recognize that your successes are a result of your hard work, talent, and dedication, not luck or chance.

Embracing the JourneyOvercoming impostor syndrome is not a one-time event, but rather a lifelong journey of self-discovery and growth. It requires patience, self-compassion, and a willingness to embrace vulnerability and discomfort. Along the way, there will be setbacks and challenges, but these are simply part of the process. As the renowned author and speaker Maya Angelou once said, “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”

By reframing impostor syndrome as an opportunity for growth and embracing the power of vulnerability, you can begin to unlock your true potential and cultivate a more authentic and fulfilling sense of self—a self that feels worthy, valuable, capable, and confident.

Final ThoughtsRemember, you are not an impostor, but a work in progress, constantly evolving and expanding into the person you were meant to be. As you embark on this inner work and reclaim your inherent, God-given worthiness, you may begin to recognize impostor syndrome as an old friend, there to remind you of that part of you that feels broken or unworthy. Rather than pushing these feelings away, embrace them and say, “I love you, you’re a part of me, and an integral part of my success.” By acknowledging and accepting these aspects of yourself, you can transform them into sources of strength and resilience.

So, the next time you feel like an impostor, I invite you to lean into the discomfort and embrace it as a natural part of the journey towards success. Trust in yourself, trust in the process, and know in your heart that you are worthy of all the love, success, and happiness the Divine has prepared for you.

You are enough, always have been, and always will be.

You deserve to be treated with love, kindness, and respect.

You are worthy of money, abundance, and unlimited success.

You don’t need to earn or prove your worthiness.

The Christ in you is worthy of love, compassion, and grace.

Something I’ve never shared publicly is how I was initiated into the path of personal Christhood, or Christ consciousness. It happened during my time volunteering for an Anthroposophical non-profit organization in South Africa. There, immersed in the profound teachings of Rudolf Steiner, I discovered the transformative power of following the Christ impulse.

In this article, I’d like to share five key lessons from Steiner’s Christology that not only transformed my own life and leadership style but also shaped my life’s mission and purpose. By sharing my story and the practical wisdom I gained, I hope to inspire you to awaken the heart leader within and align your life with the highest impulse of love, creativity, and service.

Let’s dive in.

My Journey from Actor to Minister in South AfricaMy journey into the depths of Steiner’s Christology began during a pivotal time in my life. In 2008, I decided to leave my life in Los Angeles as an actor/producer and move to South Africa, where I volunteered at the Novalis Ubuntu Institute. Under the guidance of its founders, Ralph and Anne Lise Bure, who were also members of the South African Rudolf Steiner Society, I embarked on a path of self-discovery and service that would lay the foundation for my life’s work.

It was there that I first encountered Steiner’s revelatory teachings on the Cosmic Christ, a concept entirely new to someone with a Catholic background like me. This not only transformed my understanding of leadership but also inspired me to begin my training as a minister and later establish a small spiritual community. The experience of living and working alongside individuals who embodied the principles of heart-centered leadership showed me the transformative power of aligning one’s life with what Steiner calls the Christ impulse.

Before diving deeper into Steiner’s Christology, let me provide a brief background on Steiner and Anthroposophy.

Brief Background on Rudolf Steiner and AnthroposophyRudolf Steiner (1861-1925) was an Austrian philosopher, mystic, and spiritual teacher. He led the Theosophy movement in Germany and Austria and founded Anthroposophy, a spiritual and scientific movement that seeks to understand the spiritual world through inner development and the cultivation of supersensible faculties. Steiner’s teachings encompass a wide range of subjects, including education, agriculture, medicine, and the arts, all rooted in a holistic understanding of the human being and the cosmos.

One of Steiner’s most significant contributions was the development of a holistic approach to human development called Waldorf Education. This approach encompasses the threefold nature of human beings: thinking, feeling, and willing, or simply, head, heart, and will. Through this system, the child’s body, heart and spirit are nurtured as much as their intellect. It’s no wonder Hitler closed all Waldorf schools after ascending to power!

The Significance of the Christ in Steiner’s WorldviewIn Steiner’s cosmology, Christ is a solar being of immense spiritual power and importance. The incarnation of Christ on Earth through the person of Jesus of Nazareth is seen as a pivotal event in the spiritual history of humanity and the cosmos. Through this event, known as the Mystery of Golgotha, Christ united with the Earth and became a guiding force for human evolution, enabling humanity to ultimately redeem itself and achieve spiritual freedom.

Steiner emphasizes the importance of human beings freely choosing to connect with the Christ impulse. Unlike other spiritual hierarchies that work through direct influence, Christ respects human freedom and does not impose His will upon individuals. It is up to each person to consciously choose to seek a connection with Christ and to allow this impulse to guide their spiritual development. This is the reason why, “many are called, but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:14).

Five Lessons in Steiner’s Christology to Awaken the Heart Leader WithinAfter reading several works on Steiner’s Christology and attending numerous lectures over three years on various topics related to education, occult sciences, and esotericism, here are the five key lessons I took away:

Lesson 1: The Christ Impulse is an Undeniable Cosmic Reality

“The Christ event is not merely a historical event but a cosmic reality that calls for our active participation.”

– Rudolf Steiner

Steiner’s teachings reveal that Christ is not merely a historical figure, as often portrayed in traditional Christianity, but a cosmic reality permeating all of creation. The Christ impulse, as Steiner calls it, is the evolutionary force guiding humanity towards love, compassion, and unity. This understanding transcends religious dogma, inviting us to recognize the Christ impulse as a universal principle at work in our world and throughout the entire cosmos.

During my time at Novalis, I experienced the power of this cosmic reality firsthand. In one particularly transformative moment, while meditating in the institute’s meditation hall, I felt a profound sense of connection to the Christ impulse as a living presence within my heart, connecting me to all of creation. This experience showed me that by recognizing and aligning with this impulse, we can tap into a profound source of wisdom and guidance that transcends the limitations of personal belief systems.

Lesson 2: The Path of Christ is the Path of Inner Transformation

“The path of Anthroposophy is a path of inner transformation and spiritual awakening.”

– Rudolf Steiner

Steiner’s Christology emphasizes the importance of inner transformation as the foundation for personal mastery, spiritual growth and authentic leadership development. While traditional religious practices often focus on external observances, moral codes, and ideals, Steiner invites us to cultivate qualities such as empathy, selflessness, and forgiveness from within.

At Novalis, I witnessed the transformative power of inner work in action. The leaders of the institute, who were deeply committed to their own spiritual practice, embodied a level of presence, compassion, and wisdom that inspired me and all those around them. Through their example, I learned that by embarking on a path of inner transformation, I could gradually embody the Christ impulse in my thoughts, words, and deeds, becoming a force for good in the world.

Lesson 3: The Significance of the Mystery of Golgotha

“The Mystery of Golgotha, the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ, sheds light on the cosmic significance of this event for human evolution.”

– Rudolf Steiner

Steiner’s insights into the Mystery of Golgotha offer a profound understanding of the cosmic significance of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. In contrast to traditional Christian interpretations that often focus on personal salvation, Steiner presents this event as a turning point in human evolution, enabling humanity to overcome the forces of materialism and egoism.

During a study group at Novalis, I delved deeper into Steiner’s teachings on the Mystery of Golgotha. As we explored the esoteric significance of this event, I began to understand how Christ’s sacrifice opened a path for humanity to unite with the divine through love and freedom, rather than obedience and fear. This realization transformed my understanding of leadership, showing me that true power lies not in control or dominance, but in the willingness to serve and sacrifice one’s lower drives for the greater good.

Lesson 4: The Important Role of Dedicated Spiritual Practices

“Spiritual practices and exercises can help us cultivate a deeper connection to the Christ impulse and our own inner wisdom.”

– Rudolf Steiner

Steiner’s teachings offer a wealth of spiritual practices and exercises that can help us cultivate a deeper connection to the Christ impulse and our own inner wisdom. Unlike traditional religious practices that often emphasize belief by faith and devotion, Steiner’s approach is intimate, experiential, and transformative.

At Novalis, I was introduced to a range of practices, from meditation and contemplation to artistic expression and eurythmy. As I engaged with these practices on a daily basis, I began to experience a gradual awakening of my higher faculties and a deeper alignment with the Christ impulse. These practices became an essential foundation for my journey of heart-centered leadership, helping me to develop greater clarity, compassion, and resilience in the face of the challenges I was facing.

Lesson 5: Awakening the Inner Christ Is Answering the Call to Serve

“As we awaken to the Christ within, we naturally feel called to use our gifts and talents for the benefit of others and the world.”

– Rudolf Steiner

Perhaps the most important lesson I learned from Steiner’s Christology is that true leadership is rooted in directing our unique gifts and talents in service to others. While conventional notions of leadership often emphasize power, status, and personal gain, Steiner invites us to awaken to the Christ within and to use our gifts for the benefit of the world and planetary evolution.

During my time at Novalis, I witnessed countless examples of individuals who had aligned their lives with the call to serve. Both Ralph and Anne-Lise had dedicated their lives to being of service to others by fostering their mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. From the teachers in the Waldorf school to the biodynamic farmers tending the land, each person had found a way to use their unique talents and passions to contribute to the greater good. Their example inspired me to reflect deeply on my own gifts and how I could use them to make a positive impact in the world in a way that felt natural to me.

Overcoming Challenges on the Path of Heart-Centered LeadershipWhile the path of heart-centered leadership is ultimately one of joy and fulfillment, it is not without its challenges. As you seek to fully embody the principles of Steiner’s Christology in your life and work, you may encounter obstacles such as:

  1. Resistance from others who may not understand or support your approach.
  2. Your own ego-driven desires and fears that can pull you away from your higher purpose.
  3. Systemic barriers and structures that perpetuate disconnection, inequality, and division.

When faced with these challenges, it is essential to remember that you are not alone on this path. By staying connected to the Christ impulse within you and to a supportive community of like-minded individuals, you can find the strength and resilience needed to persevere.

Practical Strategies for Overcoming Challenges on the PathSome practical strategies for overcoming challenges on the path of heart-centered leadership I found useful include:

  1. Cultivating a daily practice of meditation, inner work, and self-reflection to stay grounded and aligned with our higher purpose.
  2. Engaging in practices that deepen your connection with the earth, its elements, creatures, and the whole.
  3. Seeking out mentors, teachers, or guides who are walking the same path and can offer wisdom and support along the way.
  4. Engaging in open and honest conversation with others, even those who may hold different views, to find common ground and understanding.
  5. Trusting in the journey and surrendering to the guidance of the Christ impulse, even when the path ahead may be uncertain.

Final ThoughtsMy immersion in Steiner’s Christology during my time at the Novalis Ubuntu Institute was a true turning point in my life and leadership journey. Through the profound wisdom and embodied examples of heart-centered leaders like Ralph and Anne-Lise, I discovered a path of purpose, meaning, and service that continues to guide me to this day. I’m deeply grateful to them for taking me under their wing and nurturing the Christ impulse within me.

As you navigate the complexities and challenges of our world, the insights of Steiner’s Christology offer you timeless wisdom and practical guidance for awakening the heart leader within you. By cultivating inner transformation, engaging in practices that deepen your connection with the earth, embracing the call to serve, aligning your life with the Christ impulse, and trusting in the journey, you can become a force for love, compassion, and unity in the world.

It is my deepest hope that by sharing these lessons and reflections, you too may find inspiration and guidance on your own path of heart-centered leadership. As you embark on this journey, trust in the wisdom and love that dwells within your own heart, and know that you are part of a global community of individuals working towards the realization of our highest potential, in service to the evolution of humanity and the cosmos.

Finally, the path of heart leadership is a lifelong journey of growth, discovery, and service. By staying committed to your own inner work and aligning your life with the highest impulse of love, you can gradually embody the Christ impulse and become a transformative presence in the world.

As we each awaken the heart leader within and help others do the same, we contribute to the birth of a new culture of compassion, wisdom, and unity – a future that honors the sacredness of all life and the profound interconnectedness of all beings.

What is the Christ impulse within you asking of you?

Self-compassion is a powerful tool for spiritual growth, but it can be challenging to cultivate. Do you find yourself constantly judging and criticizing your every perceived flaw or mistake? Perhaps you find it easy to offer compassion and understanding to others, but struggle to extend the same kindness to yourself. As someone on the path of spiritual development, you may have discovered that self-judgment and inner turmoil can be significant roadblocks to your progress.

If you’re ready to experience the life-changing benefits of treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding you so readily offer others, this article is for you. In this step-by-step guide, you’ll learn how to break free from the cycles of self-criticism and embrace a more loving, heart-centered, compassionate relationship with yourself. The simple process I’m about to share with you transformed my life, and it will undoubtedly change yours. Let’s dive in.

The Importance of Self-Compassion in Spiritual GrowthMany people embark on a spiritual path seeking peace, purpose, and a deeper connection with themselves and the divine. However, they often overlook a crucial aspect of this journey: cultivating compassion for themselves. Self-compassion involves treating yourself with the same kindness, concern, and support you would show to a good friend. It means recognizing our shared humanity and acknowledging that imperfection, mistakes, and struggles are a natural part of life.

As the renowned Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh said, “When you begin to see that your enemy is suffering, that is the beginning of insight.” This wisdom extends to the way you treat yourself as well. By practicing self-compassion, you create a supportive inner environment that allows for genuine healing, growth, and transformation.

As discussed in my article on the difference between sympathy, empathy, and compassion, compassion is about easing one’s own or another’s suffering. When we extend compassion to ourselves, we ultimately aim to lessen our emotional pain, burden, and suffering.

The Role of the Heart in Self-CompassionAs a heart intelligence coach, I emphasize the importance of connecting with your heart when practicing self-compassion. The heart is more than just a physical organ; it is the center of your emotional and spiritual well-being. When you approach yourself with heartfulness and compassion, you tap into a profound source of wisdom, resilience, and unconditional love.

One powerful way to cultivate self-compassion through the heart is by practicing HeartMath’s Quick Coherence technique and locking into the feeling of compassion. This involves focusing on positive emotions like gratitude, appreciation, and love while engaging in slow, deep breathing. By entering a state of heart coherence, you harmonize your heart, mind, and emotions, creating a foundation for self-compassion and inner peace.

A Personal Story of Self-CompassionI want to share a personal story that illustrates the transformative power of self-compassion. Seven years ago, my sister passed away. Due to visa issues and not having a valid passport, I was unable to attend her funeral or be by her side during her final moments. I felt helpless, grief-stricken, and consumed by self-blame.

In the midst of this painful experience, I realized that I needed to extend compassion to myself. I couldn’t change the circumstances, but I could choose how to respond to my suffering. I gradually learned to embrace my grief while also being kind to myself by practicing heartfulness and radical self-love and acceptance. This experience taught me that self-compassion is not a luxury; it is a necessity for healing and growth. It is also one of the most powerful spiritual technologies you can ever learn.

Inspired by this realization, I want to share with you a step-by-step guide to cultivating self-compassion in your own life.

Step 1: Recognize and Acknowledge Your SufferingThe first step in practicing self-compassion is to recognize when you’re experiencing difficult emotions or facing challenges. Instead of ignoring, escaping, or suppressing these feelings, take a moment to acknowledge them. Identify the pain, fear, or frustration you’re experiencing, and validate your own struggles. Move into the body and observe all the physical sensations that arise with the pain.

Step 2: Deeply Welcome the Feelings of PainOnce you’ve acknowledged your suffering, allow yourself to deeply feel the emotions that arise. Welcome these feelings without judgment or resistance. Deeply allow each emotion until it has run its course. Recognize that experiencing pain is a natural part of the human experience and that by allowing these emotions to surface, you create space for healing and self-compassion.

Step 3: Activate Heart Coherence and Evoke CompassionTo cultivate self-compassion, activate heart coherence by practicing heart-focused breathing, and evoking positive emotions like care, gratitude, and love. One powerful way to do this is by imagining that a divine being who embodies compassion, such as Jesus or Buddha, is present with you in the room, embracing you with unconditional love and understanding. Allow yourself to feel the warmth and comfort of their compassionate presence. See yourself surrounded by a sphere of compassion and unconditional love.

Step 4: Offer Yourself Kindness and UnderstandingRadiate the feelings of compassion to yourself. Offer yourself the same kindness and understanding you would extend to a dear friend facing a similar situation, with your heart centered in compassion. Speak to yourself with gentle, supportive language, reminding yourself that everyone goes through tough times. Avoid harsh self-criticism or judgment, and instead, offer yourself compassion and care.

Step 5: Cultivate Compassion through Self-Care ActivitiesCompassion is love in action. To cultivate feelings of self-compassion and self-appreciation, engage in self-care activities that nurture your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. This may include practicing heart-centered meditation, engaging in hobbies you enjoy, spending time in nature, hanging out with supportive friends, or treating yourself to a soothing bath or massage. Remember that prioritizing self-care is an essential aspect of practicing self-compassion.

The Power of Love and CompassionLove and compassion are not merely feelings; they are powerful forces that have the capacity to transform our lives and the world around us. These innate qualities reside within each of us, waiting to be tapped into and expressed. When we cultivate love and compassion, we not only experience a greater sense of inner peace and fulfillment but also contribute to the healing and upliftment of humanity as a whole.

Take a moment to go within and connect with the love and compassion that dwell in your heart. Allow these beautiful and potent energies to fill your being, radiating outward to touch the lives of those around you. As you embody love and compassion, you become a catalyst for positive change, inspiring others to embrace these qualities in their own lives.

Every act of love and compassion, no matter how small, has a ripple effect that extends far beyond what we can see. By consistently choosing love and compassion, both towards ourselves and others, we actively participate in creating a world that is more kind, understanding, and united.

A Guided Meditation on Self-CompassionTo support you in your self-compassion practice, I invite you to experience this guided meditation, part of my 12 Virtues of the Heart Series:

Allow yourself to be guided by the soothing words and heartfelt intentions as you cultivate a deeper sense of self-compassion and inner peace.

Final ThoughtsSelf-compassion is a transformative tool for personal mastery and spiritual development, allowing you to create a foundation of inner peace, navigate life’s challenges with greater ease, and deepen your connections with others. Far from being selfish, self-compassion is crucial for living a wholehearted, authentic life. As you extend more compassion to yourself, your capacity to show up for others expands as well.

Compassion is also a muscle. The more you practice being compassionate with yourself, the more compassionate you become towards all life. Start implementing the steps I shared today, beginning small and being gentle with yourself as you build your self-compassion muscle. With consistent practice, you’ll experience a profound sense of peace, joy, and contentment.

Finally, self-compassion is a powerful spiritual technology that enables you to transform past hurt into wisdom, face challenges with grace, and become a beacon of compassion in the world. So, take a deep breath, put a hand on your heart, and embark on the path toward a more openhearted, joyful, and impactful life through the power of self-compassion. Your life will never be the same!

Have you ever wondered what it truly means to embody the mind and heart of Jesus? What would it look like to put his teachings into practice in our daily lives? If these questions resonate with you, you’re not alone. As a heart-centered leader, I’ve faced these challenges myself. Embodying Jesus’ mind and heart means living out his teachings through our everyday choices and actions, but it can be tough, especially when our behaviors don’t match our core values.

Through my own journey of awakening to Christ Consciousness, I’ve found a way to overcome self-imposed limitations, conquer self-limiting beliefs, and embody the transformative power of love. In this article, I’ll openly share my story and the lessons I’ve learned, encouraging you to awaken your inner Christ and become the authentic leader you’re meant to be. By exploring what it means to lead with love, compassion, and authenticity, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how to align your actions with your highest values and create a more positive impact in your life and the lives of those you lead and serve.

What is Christ Consciousness?Christ Consciousness isn’t about religion or dogma. It’s about awakening to the unconditional love that flows from God’s heart to our human hearts. It’s about embodying the same mind and heart that Jesus had—a consciousness of love, compassion, forgiveness, and unity.

When you lead from Christ Consciousness, you treat others with unconditional love and respect, lead with humility and a servant’s heart, make decisions based on the greater good, create a culture of trust and collaboration, and empower others to reach their full potential. Essentially, it means asking yourself in every moment, “What would love do?” and letting that guide your actions and choices.

The Universal Nature of Christ ConsciousnessThe principles of Christ Consciousness aren’t limited to Christianity. Similar concepts can be found in other spiritual traditions, such as Krishna Consciousness in Hinduism and Buddha Nature in Buddhism.

According to the consciousness research of Dr. David Hawkins, a renowned spiritual teacher and author, these three avatars—Christ, Krishna, and Buddha—represent the same level of consciousness, calibrating at the highest level of 1,000 on his map. This suggests that the essential qualities of unconditional love, compassion, forgiveness, and unity are universal and transcend individual religious traditions.

For those who may have negative associations with the word “Christ” due to past religious experiences, alternative terms such as Love Consciousness, Compassion Consciousness, or Truth Consciousness can be helpful. Ultimately, these terms all point to the same essential qualities that lie at the heart of Christ Consciousness. I call these qualities The 12 Virtues of the Heart.

From Addiction to Awakening: My StoryFor years, I struggled with an addiction to pornography and unresolved emotional pain from childhood sexual abuse. Despite my efforts to heal through the law of attraction, EFT, affirmations, and therapy, I couldn’t break free from these patterns. They created a deep distrust in people and held me back from fully embodying my potential as a spiritual teacher and coach.

One particularly challenging day, I hit a breaking point. I realized that I needed help beyond what I could provide for myself. In a moment of desperation and surrender, I wrote a letter to Jesus, acknowledging my imperfect, flawed nature and asking him to heal me and help me become the man and leader I came here to be.

What followed was a series of profound experiences, including visions during ayahuasca ceremonies where Jesus appeared to me and began to teach me about the true nature of love. These experiences marked the beginning of a transformative journey that would change the course of my life and leadership path.

Learning What Love Is NotThrough visions and revelations, I began to see how my addictive behaviors and emotional blocks were coping mechanisms to avoid facing deeper pain and a feelings of disconnection. I realized that my entire personality had been a fabrication, a series of mental and emotional programs designed to survive and cope with the world. If this isn’t who I am, then who am I really? I constantly asked myself.

In one particularly vision, Christ showed me that to progress on the path of love, to walk along side him, I needed to surrender all my preconceived notions about love, and let go of all the emotional and mental barriers I had built to protect my heart. I saw clearly that my human personality or ego, as well as my self imposed limitations, could only be transcended by a power much greater than myself: the power of Christ within me.

This realization was a turning point in my journey. It marked the beginning of a deeper surrender and trust in the transformative power of love.

Salvation as Liberation from IgnoranceIn this light, I understood that the salvation Christ offers isn’t about going to heaven in an afterlife. It’s about being liberated from our own ignorance, limited perceptions, and unloving patterns. This understanding of salvation as liberation from ignorance echoes one of Jesus’ core teachings. When he said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do,” he pointed to the idea that the root cause of what we call sin is ultimately ignorance—not knowing better. The Buddha taught a similar principle, emphasizing that when we see someone act wrongly out of ignorance, it becomes easier to forgive them and recognize their inherent innocence.

Jesus was inviting me to walk a path of the heart, a path of love that required letting go of all my unlovingness as an expression of my love for God. I began to practice forgiveness – of myself and others – not just because it was the “Christian” thing to do, but as an expression of my commitment to walk the same path of radical love that Jesus embodied and taught. I learned that early Christianity was called “The Way,” just as Buddhism was. Jesus didn’t preach a religion, but a way of being and walking in the world with love, care, and forgiveness for all life, just as the Father loves us.

This understanding transformed my approach to leadership. Instead of striving to fix or control others, I began to focus on embodying the qualities of love, compassion, and forgiveness in my own life and leadership. I saw that this was the most powerful way to inspire and empower others to do the same.

Embodying Christ Consciousness in Practice: The Jesus Prayer and Guided MeditationsAs I walked this path of healing and awakening, I discovered the profound transformative power of the Prayer of the Heart, also known as the Jesus Prayer. This ancient spiritual practice involves the repetition of a simple yet powerful phrase, such as “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me,” in sync with one’s breath and heartbeat.

Through consistent practice of the Jesus Prayer, I experienced a deepening of my connection to Christ Consciousness and a greater capacity to embody love, compassion, and presence in my daily life and leadership. I found that this prayer had the power to anchor me in the heart, even amidst the challenges and complexities of life and work.

Inspired by the transformative impact of this practice in my own life, I felt called to create a series of guided meditations to help others awaken the Christ within and experience the power of the Jesus Prayer for themselves. These meditations, which are available for purchase on my website and free on my YouTube channel, offer a practical and accessible way to begin or deepen your own journey of embodying Christ Consciousness.

Embodying Christ Consciousness in Leadership: What It Looks Like in PracticeSo, what does it really mean to “embody the mind and heart that Jesus possessed” in our leadership style? What would that look like in practice, in tangible behaviors and choices?

Here are a few key aspects:

  1. Leading with Love: In every interaction and decision, ask yourself, “What would love do?” Seek to understand, empathize, and respond with compassion, even in challenging situations.
  2. Servant Leadership: Shift your focus from being served to serving others. Seek to empower, support, and bring out the best in your team members, colleagues, and customers.
  3. Forgiveness and Non-Judgment: When conflicts or mistakes arise, choose forgiveness over judgment. Look for the lesson and the opportunity for growth, and extend grace to yourself and others.
  4. Integrity and Authenticity: Align your actions with your highest values. Be transparent, honest, and authentic in your communication and decision-making.
  5. Holding Vision: Maintain a clear vision of the highest potential for yourself, your team, and your organization. Let this vision guide your choices and inspire others to rise to their best.

As I integrated these principles into my life and leadership, I experienced profound shifts in my relationships, effectiveness, and sense of fulfillment. I found that leading from Christ Consciousness not only transformed me but had a ripple effect on those around me.

The Invitation: Awaken the Christ Within YouMy journey has shown me that awakening to Christ Consciousness is a deeply personal path of transformation, available to all who sincerely open their hearts and minds to embody the highest qualities of love. This is the reason why one of the modules of my Heart Leadership Framework focuses on Christ Consciousness, which I describe as the path of transcendence. For we can only transcend the limitations of our human egos, by invoking a power greater than the personality that created it.

If you feel called to lead from a place of greater authenticity, compassion, and service, I invite you to begin your own exploration of Christ Consciousness. Here are a few practical steps you can take:

  1. Cultivate a daily practice of prayer, meditation, or contemplation to connect with the love and wisdom of your heart. This could be as simple as setting aside a few minutes each day to sit in silence, practice the Prayer of the Heart, and tune into the presence of love within you.
  2. When faced with challenges or decisions, ask yourself, “What would love do?” Let this question guide you to choices aligned with your highest values. You may be surprised at the clarity and wisdom that emerges when you lead from this place.
  3. Practice forgiveness and compassion towards yourself and others. Remember that everyone is fighting their own battles and doing the best they can. When you find yourself judging or criticizing, take a moment to step back and choose a more loving response.
  4. Seek out mentors, communities, and teachings that support your journey of awakening and embodying Christ Consciousness. Consider exploring a transformative program like my Heart Leader Training, which provides a powerful container for healing, growth and transformation.

Remember, embodying Christ Consciousness is not a destination but an ongoing journey of growth and awakening. It requires courage to face your shadows, surrender your limitations, and allow the light of love to transform you from the inside out.

Final ThoughtsEmbodying the mind and heart of Jesus is a transformative journey that awakens us to our true nature as beings of love and compassion. As you walk this path, remember that you are not alone. Wherever your path leads, trust that you are guided and supported every step of the way by the Christ presence within you. If you’re reading this, you’re now part of a global community of heart-centered leaders committed to walking the path of love, which is ultimately the path towards your highest potential.

By fully embodying your Christ Consciousness, you become a beacon of light, inspiring others to awaken to their own divine potential. As you give yourself permission to shine your unique Christ Light, you give others permission to do the same. By incorporating the highest virtues of the heart into your leadership style, you’ll experience greater peace, purpose, and impact in all areas of your life.

If you feel called to dive deeper into this path, I invite you to explore my Heart Leader Training Program, a nine-month journey designed to support you in awakening and embodying Christ Consciousness in your life and leadership.

The world needs your unique expression of Christ’s love and wisdom. Will you answer the call?

Love. It’s a word that evokes countless emotions, memories, and dreams. But have you ever wondered what love really is? Where does it come from, and how do you experience it? Is it just a chemical reaction in your brain, a feeling in the heart, or is there something more to it?

In this article, you’ll discover that love is a multidimensional experience that spans the realms of body, mind, heart, and soul. By understanding how love operates on these different levels, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for this powerful force and learn how to cultivate more authentic, wholehearted love in your life.

The Body on Love: Exploring the Physical DimensionLet’s start with the most tangible aspect of love: the physical dimension. When you hold hands with your partner or embrace them in a warm hug, your body releases oxytocin, the “cuddle hormone” that promotes bonding and attachment. And have you ever noticed how your senses seem to come alive when you’re in love? Colors are brighter, music is more beautiful, and food tastes more delicious.

When you fall in love, your brain is flooded with a cocktail of chemicals that create feelings of euphoria, obsession, and attachment. Dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin all play a role in this “love potion” that makes you feel like you’re walking on air.

But it’s important to recognize that your body doesn’t actually experience love itself. Rather, it generates a series of biochemicals and physical sensations that you interpret as love. These bio-physical aspects of love are just one piece of the larger puzzle.

The Mind on Love: Exploring the Mental DimensionMoving beyond the physical, let’s explore how your thoughts and beliefs shape your experience of love. Have you ever had a fairy-tale vision of love that left you disappointed when reality didn’t match up? Or maybe you’ve believed that love is supposed to hurt, leading you to tolerate unhealthy relationships.

Your cognitive biases also come into play when it comes to love. You might idealize your partner, overlooking their flaws and magnifying their virtues. Or you might fall prey to the “halo effect,” assuming that because someone is attractive or charming, they must also be kind and trustworthy.

But just like the body, the mind doesn’t directly experience love. Instead, it processes a complex array of sensations, thoughts, and memories, which you then label as “love.” This mental construct of love is influenced by your unique experiences, beliefs, and expectations. It’s also influenced by culture, books, and is at the heart of Hollywood’s romanticism.

The Heart on Love: Exploring the Emotional DimensionThroughout history, the heart has been seen as the seat of love and emotion. The ancient Egyptians believed that the heart, not the brain, was the source of wisdom and feeling. And in traditional Chinese medicine, the heart is associated with joy, passion, and connection.

But did you know that your heart generates the strongest electromagnetic field in your body? Some researchers suggest that this field may play a role in your emotional connections with others, allowing you to “sync up” with your loved ones on a subtle energetic level.

However, the heart itself doesn’t experience love. Instead, it responds to the experience of love by expanding its electromagnetic field. This higher vibrational field then influences the body and mind, creating a feedback loop of positive thoughts, emotions and sensations.

There’s also the concept of “heart intelligence,” which according to the Institute of HeartMath, suggests that your heart has its own wisdom, distinct from the rational intelligence of your mind. When you learn to listen to and trust your heart’s guidance, you may find that it leads you to more authentic and fulfilling relationships.

The Soul on Love: Exploring the Spiritual DimensionAt the deepest level, love can be understood as a spiritual force that transcends the physical, mental, and emotional dimensions. From this perspective, love isn’t just a feeling or a biochemical reaction, but a way of being that is nurturing, caring, and supportive of all live It’s a state that connects you to something greater than yourself.

Many spiritual traditions teach that love is the fundamental nature of reality. The Christian Bible declares that “God is love,” while Buddhist philosophy sees love and compassion as the key to enlightenment. When you tap into this universal love, you experience a profound sense of peace, joy, and unity with all life.

From a spiritual perspective, the love you experience in relationships is a reflection of this higher love. Hence the Sufi phrase, “to God, lover, beloved, and love are one.” When you love another person unconditionally, without attachment or expectation, you are aligning yourself with the divine love that underlies all creation.

The Experience of Love: Beyond Body, Mind, and HeartAs we’ve seen, the body, mind, and heart all play important roles in our experience of love. But ultimately, love itself is a function of awareness and consciousness.

Science can measure the biochemical reactions in the brain, but it can’t capture the essence of love itself. Poets and artists can beautifully express the feelings of love, but their words and images are just pointers to a deeper reality. Spiritual teachers can guide us towards the divine love that permeates all existence, but even their teachings are just signposts on the path.

In the end, knowing about love is not the same as experiencing love. You can have a wealth of intellectual knowledge about love, but still struggle to give and receive love in your life. Or, you could let go of all your preconceived notions of what love should be, and simply be present, appreciative, and available to the experiences of love that life constantly provides.

Living from the heart means letting go of your preconceived notions about what love is supposed to look and feel like, and instead, living in the experience of love itself, engaged with each heartbeat of life. It means being present to the love that surrounds you in each moment, whether it comes in the form of a beautiful sunset, a child’s smile, your cat’s purr, passionate lovemaking, a kind word from a friend, or a warm embrace from a loved one.

My Experience of Love: Healing My Heart and Deprogramming My MindGrowing up in Venezuela, I was immersed in a culture that celebrated romantic love through nightly soap operas. Watching these shows with my family, I absorbed idealized, highly romanticized notions of what love, romance, and relationships were supposed to look and feel like.

As I grew older and began to experience love for myself, I found that reality often fell short of these idealized expectations. I suffered disappointments and heartbreaks, not realizing that I was unconsciously trying to recreate the fairy-tale romances I had seen on screen.

My healing journey brought me to painful places that required me to let go and dismantle the emotional and mental programming that had taken over my mind. It was a challenging process, confronting me with the question: if this isn’t love, then what is?

Through this process of deprogramming, I began to recognize that I had been chasing love as if it were a drug, seeking the highs of romance and passion while avoiding the deeper work of building authentic connection. As I let go of these patterns, I started to see love everywhere, in different degrees and forms.

I came to understand love as the primordial force of life itself, with fear, anger, pride, and other negative emotions arising from its absence. This realization shifted my entire perspective. I saw that my job was not to seek love, but to remove the obstacles I had built against it, as the poet Rumi so wisely said.

You don’t have to teach a baby how to love – that is their natural state. The same is true for each of us. Our nature is ultimately loving. To grow spiritually and live from the heart, we must release the unloving thoughts, feelings, and behaviors we’ve learned along the way as protective mechanisms.

Once we make the decision to follow the path of the heart, the energy of love begins to illuminate all the areas within us that need healing. It’s a challenging but profoundly transformative journey, one that asks us to continuously let go and open ourselves to the love that is always available, in each moment.

Putting It All Together: Integrating the Dimensions of LoveSo how can you integrate these different dimensions of love into your life so that you can have expanded awareness of love? Here are some practical tips:

  • Challenge your limiting beliefs about love. Notice when your thoughts create barriers to connection and intimacy, and practice reframing them in a more positive light.
  • Listen to your heart’s guidance. When faced with difficult decisions or relationship challenges, take time to quiet your mind and tune into your heart’s intuitive wisdom. My guided meditations, A Return to Love, or Seeing with the Heart, will help.
  • Cultivate spiritual practices that connect you with love. Whether through meditation, prayer, or time in nature, find ways to tap into the deeper love that permeates all life.
  • Practice loving-kindness towards yourself and others. Treat yourself with compassion and understanding, and extend that same love to everyone you encounter, even those who challenge you. My guided meditation, Radical Self-Love, will help.

Final ThoughtsLove isn’t a localized experience. Rather, it’s a multi-faceted jewel that shines through the body, mind, heart, and soul. When we love with the totality of our being, we tap into a transformative force that can nurture, heal, and inspire us and others. That’s the essence of wholeheartedness and living from the heart.

As you proceed on your journey of love, remember that the deepest experience of love comes from your own awareness and presence, not from knowledge acquired from movies or books. God, not people, is the source of love. By letting go of your preconceptions about love and being open to the love that surrounds you, you can tap into a wellspring of joy, connection, and meaning.

So let your light shine brightly, and let the love flowing from your heart inundate every aspect of your life. And remember, that love, true love, is closer than you imagine, for you were made in the image and likeness of love.

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.” This ancient Biblical wisdom from Proverbs 29:18 captures a fundamental truth: Without a clear vision to guide us, we struggle to find meaning, direction and inspiration in our lives and work. We drift aimlessly, failing to manifest our fullest potential.

But what does it really mean to have a vision? And how can you craft one that authentically reflects your deepest values, purpose and desires – a North Star that illuminates the path to your highest destiny?

In this article, I’ll share a powerful 3-step process I use to help my clients and students look within and uncover the building blocks of a truly meaningful and authentic vision. I call it, “Slowing Down to Speed Up”.

Let’s dive in.

As a young executive, Sarah had all the trappings of success – a corner office, a team of dedicated employees, and a vision board filled with images of exotic vacations and luxury cars. Yet despite her achievements, Sarah felt strangely unfulfilled. She was working hard, but for what? The vision she had crafted felt hollow, disconnected from her deepest values and purpose.

Sarah’s story is not uncommon. In my work with leaders across industries, I’ve seen countless individuals struggle to create visions that truly inspire and guide them. They dutifully follow popular goal-setting strategies, pasting magazine cutouts onto vision board and crafting elaborate mission statements. But all too often, these efforts fail to yield the desired results. The images and words remain flat and lifeless, mere visuals lacking meaning.

The Consequences of an Inauthentic VisionThe consequences of an inauthentic vision are severe. Leaders without a true north find themselves drifting from one opportunity to another, never fully committing. They struggle to inspire their teams, feeling disconnected from their own work and purpose. They fail to make the impact they desire, not because they lack talent or drive, but because they’ve lost touch with the deeper why behind their efforts.

So, how can someone like Sarah break free from the mirage of inauthentic vision and tap into something real and powerful? The answer lies in a journey of self-discovery – a process of dropping into your heart and uncovering your core values, life purpose, and heart’s desires.

Slowing Down to Speed UpIn my work with leaders, I guide them through a process I call “Slow Down to Speed Up.” Unlike traditional vision-crafting methods that focus on external goals and metrics, this approach invites you to drop from your head into your heart, connecting with the essence of who you are and what truly matters to you.

The journey begins with cultivating greater self-awareness and presence through practices like witnessing and heart-centered meditation. Witnessing involves observing one’s thoughts, feelings and sensations with open, non-judgmental attention. Heart-Centered meditation involves breathing is a pattern of slow, deep breaths that helps synchronize the heart, brain and autonomic nervous system.

With a more present and attuned state of being, we then explore three key areas:

Core ValuesThe first step in crafting an authentic vision is to clarify your core values. These are the fundamental beliefs and principles that guide your decisions and actions. To uncover your core values, reflect on the following questions:

  • What were the top 3-5 most important decisions in your life?
  • What values were driving those decisions?
  • What were you hoping to feel as a result of making those choices?
  • What values do you want to embody more fully going forward?

For example, reflecting on these questions you might identify values such as authenticity, courage, compassion, truth, and love. The key is to go beyond generic values and articulate what they uniquely mean to you. When I went through this process, I discovered my core three values are love, creativity, and freedom. Since them, they’ve become my guide when making important decisions.

As you explore these questions, look for common themes and patterns. What values seem to show up again and again? These are likely your core values – the deeper, often hidden determinants of your life.

Life PurposeThe next step is to connect with your life purpose. Purpose is what you want to ‘bring forth’ out into the world – the difference you want to make. When you are living “on purpose,” you feel a sense of vitality and meaning that goes beyond mere happiness or success.

To explore your life purpose, consider the following seven questions:

  1. What has brought you the most joy in life?
  2. What has brought you the most pain?
  3. What are the natural gifts and talents you believe you have?
  4. What are the natural gifts and talents others see in you?
  5. What contribution do you want to make in the world? What problem do you want to help solve?
  6. In what area do you want to be a leader or attain mastery?
  7. What do you believe is your higher calling or soul purpose? Why do you think God put you here, or your soul decided to incarnate?

As you reflect on these questions, look for the common threads that weave through your experiences and aspirations. What emerges is a multidimensional view of your life purpose, a compass that can guide your choices and actions.

Your purpose, for example, can be “To be a compassionate leader, creating innovative programs and services, so that refugees can live with greater dignity and opportunity.”

Heart’s DesiresThe final step in the process is to tune into your heart’s deepest desires. These are the longings and aspirations that reside in the core of your being, the things you most want to create, experience, and contribute in this lifetime.

To tap into your heart’s desires, ask yourself:

  • What do I most long to create, experience, or offer in this lifetime?
  • If I had 1 year to live, how would I spend my time and energy? What matters most?
  • What is my soul yearning for? What would make my heart sing?

One leader I worked with uncovered a deep desire to use her business acumen to support vulnerable teenagers. Another realized he longed for more adventure, freedom, and travel. As they gave themselves permission to honor these desires, their visions (and lives) came alive with new energy and possibility.

As you sit with these questions, allow yourself to dream big. What would your life look like if you were living in full alignment with your heart’s desires? What would you be doing, creating, and experiencing?

Putting It All TogetherHaving clarified your values, purpose, and desires, you’re ready to weave these threads into a cohesive vision statement or declaration that captures:

  1. The overarching impact you want to create (informed by your purpose)
  2. The core values and strengths that will guide your actions
  3. The desires and experiences you want to manifest along the way

When I went through this process myself, I arrived at the following realization and vision statement:

“My vision is to be a loving, courageous leader doing God’s work as a spiritual teacher, coach, and artist, guiding people back to their hearts and, through their hearts, to the eternal heart of God. Guided by the values of love, creativity, and freedom, I create transformative programs, content, and experiences that empower individuals to embody the Christ presence within them, enabling them to live fulfilling lives from a place of heart-centered authenticity so that they can help others do the same. In the process, I get to experience the joy of connecting deeply with others, the thrill of exploring new frontiers of human potential, and the satisfaction of contributing to a global movement of elevated consciousness and harmony.”

How Do You Know if Your Vision is Authentic? As you go through the process of crafting your vision declaration statement, it’s important to pause and reflect on whether the vision that’s emerging is truly authentic to who you are.

Here are some key questions to ask yourself:

  • Is this me? Does this vision reflect your true self, your personality, your passions, and your values? Or is it a vision you think you “should” have based on external expectations or influences?
  • Does it reflect my beliefs and ideas about myself? Does this vision align with your self-image and self-concept? Does it feel congruent with how you see yourself and your potential?
  • Does it allow me to express my natural gifts and talents? Does this vision provide a platform for you to fully utilize and express your unique strengths and abilities? Will it allow you to operate in your zone of genius?
  • Is it in alignment with my big Why? Does this vision connect with your deeper purpose, the reason you feel called to lead and serve? Does it align with the difference you want to make in the world?
  • Will it support my livelihood and lifestyle? Does this vision align with your desired standard of living and way of being in the world? Will it provide the resources and opportunities needed to sustain yourself and your loved ones?
  • Will it benefit me, others, and the world? Is this a vision that creates win-win-win outcomes? Does it have the potential to positively impact yourself, the people around you, and the larger world?
  • Will it allow me to express God through me and as me? Does this vision feel in alignment with your understanding of the Divine and your role in the larger unfolding of life? Will it allow you to express your highest self and most sacred purpose?

As you sit with these questions, tune into your body and your intuition. Notice any sensations of expansion, excitement, or rightness that arise. These are often signs that you’re on the right track, that your vision is resonating with your deepest truth.

At the same time, be aware of any feelings of constriction, heaviness, or misalignment. These may be indications that some aspect of your vision is not quite authentic, that it needs to be refined or released.

The key is to stay connected to your inner truth, to keep checking in with yourself and adjusting your course as needed. By doing so, you ensure that your vision remains a true reflection of who you are and what you’re here to create.

Living the Vision: The Journey ContinuesCrafting your authentic vision is a major milestone – but it’s just the beginning. The real test is whether you embody that vision in your daily life and leadership. This requires ongoing intention, awareness, courage, and support.

To integrate your vision:

  • Share it with others. Declare your vision to friends, family, colleagues – anyone who can serve as a sounding board and accountability partner. Ask for their support and feedback.
  • Make decisions through the lens of your vision. When faced with a choice, ask: “Which option best aligns with and advances my authentic vision?” Let your vision be your guidepost.
  • Take aligned action. Each week, identify 3 specific actions you will take to manifest your vision. Break them down into doable steps and schedule them.
  • Reflect and recalibrate regularly. Carve out time each quarter to revisit your vision. Is it still resonant and relevant? Are you living in alignment? What needs to shift?
  • Invest in support. Leading from an authentic vision is joyful and energizing – but it’s not always easy. Work with a coach, mentor or peer group who can provide ongoing encouragement, accountability and guidance.

Overcoming Obstacles to Your Authentic VisionAs you aspire to create an authentic vision that expresses who you really are, you may wrestle with doubts and perceived roadblocks. Here’s how to navigate the most common challenges:

“I don’t have time for introspection.” While life’s demands can make reflection feel impractical, investing in self-awareness is a leadership prerequisite. Start with just 15 minutes of daily journaling or meditation. The clarity you gain will more than compensate for the time spent.

“I’m not sure I have a ‘calling’.” If you’re struggling to identify your unique contribution, notice what activities energize you and what problems spark your curiosity. Your purpose doesn’t have to be grandiose – it can be as simple as “being a force for good.” Trust that as you lean into what lights you up, your path will unfold.

“My vision seems unrealistic.” Authentic visions challenge the status quo and stretch you beyond your comfort zone. Remember, a vision is a guiding star, not an overnight goal. Chunk it down, find fellow travelers, and keep moving forward. The impossible will start to feel inevitable.

“I have to be practical.” When you honor your true desires and values, you tap into a renewable source of energy and creativity that allows you to be of greater service. Yes, there are practical constraints, but often there’s more room to maneuver than you assume. Challenge yourself to find synergies where you can meet responsibilities while honoring your heart’s calling.

The World Needs Heart-Centered LeadersWe are living through a time of great change and upheaval in the world. The old systems and ways of being that lack heart, authenticity and integrity are crumbling. A new era is emerging – one that calls for greater truth, transparency, connection and care. In this pivotal moment, the world desperately needs a new kind of leader – heart-centered leaders who have the courage, compassion and clarity to guide us into a brighter future.

These heart-centered leaders are not driven by ego or external measures of success. Instead, they are deeply connected to their own hearts – to their core values, purpose, and most authentic desires. They have done the inner psychological and spiritual work to uncover the truth of who they are and the unique contribution they feel called to make. From this place of alignment and integrity, they lead with love, building a world that works for everyone.

Final Thoughts and InvitationWhere there is no vision, the leader and their followers perish. This twist on the ancient Biblical wisdom from Proverbs 29:18 captures a fundamental truth: Without a clear vision to guide them, leaders and those they lead will struggle to find direction, meaning, and purpose. They risk metaphorically ‘perishing’ – failing to thrive and reach their full potential.

If you feel in your heart the call to become this kind of transformative leader, I invite you to join my Heart Leader Certification Program, a 9-month journey in Heart-Centered, Transformative Leadership and Coaching. In a safe and nurturing community space, I will guide you through the deep work of connecting to your authentic vision and developing the nine key skills of heart-centered, transformative leadership.

You will gain the clarity and confidence to lead from your deepest truth, making the impact you know you’re here to make. You will be supported by a global community of heart-minded leaders who share your commitment to creating a world of greater harmony and wholeness. Together, we will be a force for the heart awakening that our planet so urgently needs.

“Gabriel’s Heart Leader Program helped me step into my power. I find that I am more impactful in my work with young people, activists, and leaders because I am authentic and able to use my special gifts.” – Shammillah Wilsom, Inner Activist Coach

The world needs more leaders like you – leaders with an open heart, a courageous spirit, and a vision for a brighter tomorrow. If this resonates, I encourage you to listen to the whispers of your own heart. Dare to envision the leader you wish to become and the world you wish to create. Embrace the adventure of uncovering and living your authentic purpose.

Will you answer the call?

Have you ever struggled to find the right words to comfort a friend in need, support a colleague through a challenge, or connect with a loved one on a deeper level? What if I told you that there’s one simple question that can unlock the door to more authentic, compassionate, and meaningful communication?

In this article, you’ll discover the transformative power of asking “Do you want to be heard, hugged, or helped?” You’ll learn why this question is so effective in creating a safe space for others to express themselves fully, and how it can help you become a more empathetic, supportive, and heart-centered leader so that you can better support others. Let’s dive in.

As a heart-centered leader, one of the most transformative questions you can ask when holding space for another is: “Do you want to be heard, hugged, or helped?” This simple yet profound question cuts to the core of what it means to communicate with authenticity, vulnerability, and compassion.

Whether you’re a coach, a manager, a parent, or simply someone who wants to build stronger relationships, this simple question is a powerful tool to add to your communication toolkit. It is a question which, when asked from a place of true compassion and care for another, will undoubtedly take your relationships to the next level.

The Origin of “Heard, Hugged, or Helped”The concept of “Heard, Hugged, or Helped” originated from a New York Times article written by Jancee Dunn titled “When Someone You Love Is Upset, Ask This One Question”. In the article, Dunn suggests that asking a simple question like “Do you want to be heard, hugged, or helped?” can be a powerful tool for improving communication and connection in relationships.

The idea behind this concept is to give the other person a sense of control and to respect their individual needs and preferences. It acknowledges that different people cope with challenges and emotions in unique ways, and that what might be comforting for one person may not be the same for another. By offering a choice between being heard, hugged, or helped, you can better meet the needs of the person in distress and build stronger, more empathetic connections.

The Importance of Wholehearted CommunicationIn my Heart Leader Training Program, I emphasize the importance of wholehearted communication as a pathway to personal mastery and spiritual growth. As I discussed in my article “What Does It Mean to Hold Space for Someone?”, holding space is about creating a safe, non-judgmental environment where others can express themselves fully and authentically. When you communicate from the heart, you create this sacred space. You listen not just with your ears, but with your entire being – your heart, your soul, your essence. You hold space for their emotions, their struggles, and their dreams, without judgment or agenda.

Wholehearted communication is about more than just exchanging words; it’s about creating a deep, heart-to-heart connection that transcends the mind and touches the soul. It’s about being fully present with another person, even when it feels uncomfortable or scary. It’s about allowing yourself to be seen, heard, and loved for who you truly are.

The Power of Being HeardWhen you ask someone if they want to be heard, you are offering them a precious gift: the gift of your undivided attention and unconditional love. You are saying to them, “I see you. I hear you. Your voice, your feelings, your experiences matter to me.”

Being heard is a fundamental human need and a key to emotional healing. It’s how we feel validated, understood, and connected to something greater than ourselves. When we feel heard, we feel less alone in our struggles and more empowered to face our challenges. We feel like our authentic self is being celebrated and that we have something valuable to contribute to the world.

  • A coaching client shares a painful childhood memory, and you listen with empathy and compassion, creating a safe space for them to process and heal.
  • A colleague expresses frustration with a project, and you give them your full presence, acknowledging their feelings without trying to fix or change anything.
  • Your child tells you about a struggle at school, and you put down your phone, look into their eyes, and listen with your whole heart, letting them know they are loved and supported.

The Power of Being HuggedSometimes, what people need most is not words or actions, but a physical expression of love and divine connection. When you ask someone if they want to be hugged, you are inviting them into the embrace of unconditional love.

Hugging releases oxytocin, the “cuddle hormone,” which helps to reduce stress, promote bonding, and open the heart. A hug can communicate more than words ever could: “I am here for you. You are not alone. You are loved and cherished just as you are.”

  • A client breaks down in tears during a session, and you ask permission to give them a comforting hug, holding sacred space for their release.
  • Your partner shares a vulnerable insecurity, and you pull them close, letting them feel your heartbeat and your unwavering love.
  • A grieving friend falls into your arms after a funeral, and you simply hold them in compassionate silence, honoring their pain.

The Power of Being HelpedSometimes, people don’t just want to be heard or hugged; they want to be helped. They want guidance, support, or practical assistance with a problem they are facing.

When you ask someone if they want to be helped, you are offering them your wisdom, your resources, and your commitment to their growth. You are saying to them, “I am here to support you. I have tools and knowledge that can empower you. You don’t have to face this challenge alone.”

  • A friend is struggling with addiction, and you offer to connect them with a recovery program or be their accountability partner.
  • A coaching client is feeling stuck in their career, and you offer to do a visioning exercise to help them clarify their purpose and next steps.
  • A team member is having trouble with a technical issue, and you sit with them patiently, walking them through the solution step-by-step.

The Role of Vulnerability in Building ConnectionVulnerability is a key ingredient in building deep, authentic connections with others. When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, we create space for others to do the same. By sharing our own struggles, fears, and dreams, we invite others to relate to us on a more profound level, fostering a sense of trust and understanding.

Asking someone if they want to be heard, hugged, or helped requires a level of vulnerability from both parties. When you offer this question, you are opening yourself up to the possibility of being there for someone in a way that may feel uncomfortable or unfamiliar. You are stepping into a space of emotional intimacy and connection, which can be both rewarding and challenging.

Similarly, when someone chooses to be heard, hugged, or helped, they are allowing themselves to be vulnerable with you. They are trusting you with their emotions, their physical space, or their challenges, which is a significant act of courage and faith in your relationship.

Embracing vulnerability in your relationships can lead to a greater sense of connection, empathy, and understanding. When you create a safe space for others to be vulnerable with you, and when you allow yourself to be vulnerable in return, you lay the foundation for deeper, more meaningful relationships built on trust, compassion, and genuine care.

Applying “Heard, Hugged, or Helped” in Your RelationshipsWhen you find yourself in a situation where a friend or loved one is upset, it’s essential to approach the conversation with genuine care and compassion. Rather than simply asking “Do you want to be heard, hugged, or helped?” as a standalone question, allow it to arise naturally as part of the conversation.

For example, you might say:

“Mary, I love and care for you, and I can see how upset you are. I’m wondering how I can best support you right now. So let me ask you, do you want me to hold a space for you and just listen? Would you like me to hug you and just hold you? Or is there something I can do to help?”

This approach demonstrates your sincere desire to understand and meet their needs, rather than simply following a script.

In my training, I often refer to Tej Steiner’s Five Ways of Being, a framework that helps people hold space for others. The first way of being is being “Clear.” Asking “Do you want to be heard, hugged, or helped?” allows you, as a leader or coach, to gain clarity on what it is that you’re holding space for, or what the other person is wanting by taking space. This clarity is essential for providing the most effective support and creating a safe, nurturing environment for growth and healing.

My Personal Experience as a CoachIn my experience as a coach, I have found that most people need to be heard first, then hugged, and only then are they truly open to being helped. This sequence requires empathy – the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Hearing someone and hugging them are expressions of empathy, while helping them is an expression of compassion.

As I discussed in my recent article on the differences between sympathy, empathy, and compassion, empathy is about understanding and sharing the feelings of others, while compassion takes it a step further by actively seeking to alleviate their suffering. When you approach wholehearted communication with empathy and compassion, you create a safe, supportive space for growth, healing, and transformation.

Final ThoughtsIn A Course in Miracles (ACIM), there is a powerful concept that states, “Every communication is either a loving response or a cry for help.” This idea suggests that when someone is acting in a way that seems hurtful, angry, or fearful, they are actually expressing a deep-rooted need for love and understanding. Their behavior, even if it appears negative or hostile, is a masked plea for love and connection.

Recognizing this cry for love is crucial when applying the “Heard, Hugged, or Helped” approach in your relationships. When you ask someone if they want to be heard, hugged, or helped, you are essentially acknowledging their call for love and offering them a compassionate, loving response.

By providing a safe space for them to express their emotions, offering physical comfort through a hug, or extending practical support, you are meeting their underlying need for love and connection. This empathetic response can help them feel seen, validated, and supported, leading to profound healing and transformation in your relationships.

As you navigate your interactions with others, remember that beneath every communication lies a yearning for love and understanding. By approaching each conversation with an open heart and a willingness to respond with compassion, you can create deeper, more meaningful connections and foster a greater sense of harmony in your relationships.

Is pornography holding your heart hostage? Are you tired of feeling disconnected, ashamed, and unfulfilled? Do you find yourself turning to pornography as a cheap substitute for the love and intimacy your heart truly craves? If you’re struggling with pornography addiction, you’re not alone. In today’s digital age, countless individuals – myself included – find themselves trapped in a cycle of shame and isolation, believing that true healing and connection are out of reach.

But what if I told you that there’s a way to break free from the chains of addiction and reconnect with your heart? Whether you’re just beginning to recognize the impact of pornography on your life or you’ve been struggling with addiction for years, this article will provide you with the tools, insights, and support you need to reclaim your heart and embark on a path of true healing and transformation.

Ready to break free from the grip of pornography and experience the joy, love, and intimacy your heart has been longing for? Let’s dive in.

In my previous article, “Your Heart on Porn: How Pornography Affects Your Heart,” I shared my personal journey with pornography and the realization that it could never fulfill the deep longing for connection and intimacy that resides within your heart. As you embark on a heart-centered life, you’ll discover that true healing and wholeness come from reconnecting with your heart and embracing the wisdom and guidance it provides.

If you’ve struggled with pornography addiction, you know firsthand the feelings of disconnection, shame, and emptiness that often accompany this experience. In today’s digital age, pornography is more accessible than ever, making it easy to fall into the trap of using it as a cheap substitute for the deep connection and intimacy you crave. But I want to assure you that healing is possible. By reconnecting with your heart, you can break free from the chains of addiction and discover a new path forward – one filled with authentic love, intimacy, and connection.

Why Does Your Heart Beat So Fast When Watching Porn?Have you ever noticed your heart racing when you watch pornography? This is a common physiological response that occurs due to the intense visual and auditory stimulation that porn provides. When you watch porn, your brain releases a surge of neurotransmitters, including adrenaline and dopamine, which are associated with pleasure and reward. This neurochemical cascade triggers a series of physiological responses, including increased heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration.

Additionally, the sexual arousal experienced while watching porn activates the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the “fight or flight” response. This activation further contributes to the increased heart rate and other physical symptoms you may experience.

It’s important to note that while this rapid heartbeat may feel exciting in the moment, it is not a sign of genuine intimacy or connection. In fact, the repeated exposure to pornography can lead to a desensitization of these physiological responses over time, making it more difficult to experience authentic arousal and intimacy with a real partner.

The Disconnect: How Pornography Addiction Separates You from Your HeartWhen you become addicted to pornography, you create a profound disconnect from your heart. You numb yourself to the wisdom and guidance that your heart provides, instead seeking solace in the temporary, fleeting pleasures of porn. This disconnect can manifest in many ways:

  • Emotional numbness and difficulty experiencing authentic feelings
  • Strained or broken relationships with loved ones
  • Lowered self-esteem and feelings of shame or unworthiness
  • A lack of energy or motivation to pursue your goals
  • A sense of spiritual emptiness or disconnection from a higher power

As you continue to engage in pornography, this disconnect only deepens, leaving you feeling increasingly isolated, ashamed, and unfulfilled. It’s important to recognize that the shame and guilt surrounding sexuality, often perpetuated by religious beliefs, can make it even more challenging to confront and heal from pornography addiction.

The Journey of Reconnection: Practical Steps to HealingHealing from pornography addiction begins with a commitment to reconnect with your heart. This journey may not be easy, but it is one of the most rewarding and transformative experiences you can undertake. Here are some practical steps to get you started:

  1. Acknowledge the problem and make a decision to change. This takes courage and honesty, but it is the essential first step.
  2. Engage in heart-centered practices, such as meditation, journaling, and self-reflection. These practices will help you tune into your heart’s wisdom and cultivate a deeper connection with yourself. My guided meditation ‘Letting Go of Addiction’ can be a powerful tool to help you navigate through this journey, aiding in the process of reconnecting with your heart and fostering self-love.
  3. Practice self-compassion and forgiveness. Addiction often breeds shame and self-judgment. Learn to treat yourself with kindness and understanding, recognizing that you are worthy of love and healing.
  4. Develop new, healthy habits and coping mechanisms. Replace pornography with activities that nourish your mind, body, and spirit, such as exercise, creative pursuits, or spending time in nature.
  5. Reduce time spent on electronic devices. Limit your exposure to technology and create boundaries around your cell phone and computer usage to minimize the temptation to engage in pornography.
  6. Ask yourself, “What is pornography a substitute for in my life?” Often, the answer will be a deep desire to feel connected, loved, accepted, or simply to experience joy and aliveness. Recognize that pornography provides a temporary escape from feelings of isolation, disconnection, and pain, but it cannot truly fulfill these needs.
  7. Seek support from professionals, loved ones, or support groups. Surround yourself with people who understand your struggle and can offer guidance and encouragement.

The Power of Heart Intelligence in Overcoming AddictionOne of the most powerful tools in overcoming pornography addiction is heart intelligence – the wisdom and guidance that comes from living in alignment with your heart. When we tap into heart intelligence, we access a deep well of resilience, compassion, and clarity that can guide us through even the darkest of times.

Along my own healing journey, I found HeartMath’s techniques to be incredibly useful. These exercises, which focus on cultivating coherence between the heart and brain, helped me calm the feelings of anxiety and disconnection I often experienced – feelings that I had been trying to escape through pornography.

Practicing heart coherence has numerous benefits for those in recovery from addiction. By synchronizing the heart and brain, coherence helps to de-stress the body, calm the nervous system, and promote a sense of groundedness and connection. When we feel more connected to ourselves and others, we’re less likely to act on impulses or turn to addictive behaviors as a means of escape.

One simple yet powerful technique is the Quick Coherence® Technique, which involves focusing on the heart area, breathing deeply and rhythmically, and activating a positive emotion like gratitude or appreciation. By practicing this technique for just a few minutes each day, you can begin to cultivate greater resilience, emotional balance, and heart-brain coherence.

If you’d like to experience the benefits of heart coherence for yourself, I invite you to listen to my 20-minute heart coherence meditation. This guided practice will help you find a sense of calm, connection, and clarity, even in the midst of challenging emotions or cravings.

Remember, cultivating heart intelligence is a practice – one that requires patience, commitment, and self-compassion. But as you continue to strengthen your heart-brain connection, you’ll find that you have a powerful ally in your journey of healing and transformation

Rebuilding Authentic Connections and IntimacyAs you continue on your journey of reconnection and healing, you’ll begin to experience the joy and fulfillment that comes from authentic, heart-centered connections. Whether it’s rebuilding trust and intimacy with a partner, deepening your friendships, or cultivating a more loving relationship with yourself, these connections will nourish and sustain you in ways that pornography never could.

Some strategies for rebuilding authentic connections include:

  • Practicing vulnerability and honest communication with loved ones
  • Engaging in activities that foster intimacy and connection, such as shared hobbies or date nights
  • Cultivating a daily practice of self-love, self-compassion, and self-care
  • Seeking out communities or groups that align with your values and interests
  • Deepening your connection with the Divine/God/Spirit/Source

A Recommended ResourceWhen I was struggling with pornography addiction, one book that helped me immensely was “Healing and Recovery” by Dr. David Hawkins. The chapter on sex, in particular, provided me with a deeper understanding of the healing path ahead. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to overcome pornography addiction and reconnect with their heart.

Final ThoughtsHealing from pornography addiction is a journey of reconnection – with yourself, your heart, the people you love, and your own divinity. It requires courage, commitment, and a willingness to embrace the wisdom and guidance of your heart. But as someone who has walked this path, I can tell you that the rewards are immeasurable.

If you’re ready to take the first step on your journey of healing and reconnection, I invite you to enroll in the Heart Warrior Bootcamp. This transformative program will provide you with the tools, support, and guidance you need to break free from addiction and live a heart-centered life.

In the next article in this series, we’ll explore the root causes of addiction and provide practical tips that can be applied not only to pornography addiction but to other addictive behaviors as well.

Remember, on the reconnection journey, your heart is your greatest ally and guide. Trust in its wisdom, and know that you are never alone on this journey. With each step you take, you are moving closer to the love, intimacy, and connection your heart truly desires.

Two years ago, I found myself navigating the winding roads of Spain on a newly purchased motorcycle. My heart pounded with a mix of excitement and anxiety. It had been five years since I last rode, and I felt insecure, fearing the possibility of crashing and dying in an accident. As I gripped the handlebars tightly, I realized that the initial excitement of buying the bike had gradually morphed into anxiety. How did I let this happen? I wondered. What could I do to regain my confidence and sense of excitement? The answer to these questions, as you’re about to find out, is literally one breath away.

Excitement and anxiety are more closely connected than you’ve ever imagined. In this article, I’ll share my journey from anxiety to excitement and the surprising science behind it. Follow these steps, and you’ll discover a simple yet profound tool to reframe your anxiety, build greater emotional resilience, and open up new possibilities for joy and fulfillment in your life. Let’s dive in.

My Lifelong Struggle with AnxietySomething you may not know about me is that I’ve struggled with anxiety for much of my life. As a child, I was painfully shy and afraid to speak up in class. As a young adult, I experienced panic attacks before castings, job interviews, and first dates. Even as I began to build a successful coaching practice, I still wrestled with fear, self-doubt, and insecurity behind the scenes.

However, through my training in applied heart intelligence, I learned a valuable technique. I discovered that whenever I focused my breath on my heart, I could neutralize negative emotions like fear and activate a sense of inner calm. So, as I drove my motorcycle that day, I began to focus on my breath and dropped into my heart. Immediately, I felt my anxiety begin to transform. Suddenly, I wasn’t just afraid—I was excited, exhilarated, alive. I felt open and even at one with the road. I realized that this simple shift in physiology and mindset held the key to unlocking a whole new way of being.

The Science of Anxiety and Excitement: A Closer LookNow, you might be wondering, how could something as simple as breathing have such a profound effect? The answer lies in the science behind it.

Research shows that anxiety and excitement share almost identical physiological markers. Consider this: a racing heart, sweaty palms, butterflies in your stomach – do these sensations mean you’re anxious about a job interview, or eagerly anticipating a first date? Studies have found that the hormonal profiles of anxiety and excitement are virtually indistinguishable in the body. Both emotional states stimulate the release of adrenaline and cortisol.

Adrenaline, also known as epinephrine, increases your heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate in preparation for a perceived threat or significant event. Cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone, mobilizes glucose into your bloodstream for quick energy and suppresses non-emergency bodily functions like digestion. Hence, the hormonal response to anxiety and excitement is remarkably similar, reflecting their intertwined nature.

A good way to understand this is to compare it to riding a roller coaster. Your heart races, your breath quickens, your muscles tense – and yet, you probably describe the experience as thrilling rather than threatening. The physical sensations are the same, but your mindset is different.

How Perception Changes the GameThe key difference between these states is not so much what’s happening in your body, but how you perceive, interpret and respond to it. When You’re anxious, your breathing becomes rapid and shallow, triggering the fight-or-flight response. You get trapped in negative self-talk, amplifying the stress in your body.

But when you’re excited, you tend to breathe more deeply, oxygenating the brain and body. You focus on the opportunities in the situation, not just the risks. This one difference in breathing and mindset makes all the difference in how you feel and perform. And the good news is, you can learn to make this shift deliberately – using a simple technique I learned from the HeartMath Institute.

Heart-Centered Breathing: A Gateway to ExcitementThe HeartMath Institute has discovered that the key to shifting from anxiety to excitement lies in generating coherence between the heart, brain, and nervous system. By focusing your attention on the heart and breathing in a slow, rhythmic pattern, you create a state of calm, balance, and emotional control.

This technique, known as the Quick Coherence Technique, is simple yet powerful. Here’s how you can use it to shift from anxiety to excitement:

  1. Focus your attention on your heart. Imagine breathing through it, inhaling and exhaling a soft, warm light.
  2. Breathe in for a count of 5, allowing your belly to expand. Breathe out for a count of 5, sighing out the breath through pursed lips.
  3. As you breathe, activate a positive feeling, like gratitude, compassion, or appreciation. Recall a time you felt deep care, love, or connection, and let yourself re-experience that feeling.
  4. Silently affirm to yourself, “With each breath, I’m letting go of anxiety and fear. With each breath, I’m welcoming excitement and flow.”
  5. Continue heart-focused breathing and holding the positive feeling for 2–3 minutes, or until you feel a shift in your emotional state.

I’ve used this technique in countless nerve-wracking situations – before leading a workshop or recording a video, during a difficult conversation, even in the dentist’s chair! And every time, I’m amazed at how quickly it calms my nervous system and opens me up to a more empowered state.

Embracing Discomfort for GrowthAs I rode my motorcycle through Spain that day, I realized that my anxiety was pointing me toward something important – the edge of my comfort zone, where true growth happens. Each time I noticed anxiety arising – and with it a need to close up, I dropped into my heart, breathed rhythmically, and opened up by surrendering to the feeling with faith. With each breath into my heart, I expanded my capacity to handle discomfort and uncertainty.

This is the hidden gift of anxiety: it’s a signpost pointing us toward our growth edge. When you learn to embrace it instead of running from it, you discover how capable and resilient you really are. Every time you choose courage over comfort, you grow. That’s how you build the muscle of emotional resilience.

When you master the ability to alchemize anxiety into excitement, you not only transform your own experience of life, but you also become a model of emotional resilience and courageous leadership for others. By embracing your fears and letting your heart guide you forward, you inspire those around you to do the same. This ripple effect of heart-centered living and leading is how we can heal ourselves and our world, one breath and one choice at a time.

Putting it into PracticeLearning to transform anxiety into excitement through heart-centered breathing has been a game-changer for me, both personally and professionally – and I can say the same for each client or student to whom I have taught this practice. It’s allowed me to take risks I never would have before, have difficult conversations, and stretch myself in ways that have deeply enriched my life and relationships.

As you begin to apply the Quick Coherence Technique outlined earlier in this article, remember to be patient and compassionate with yourself. Like any new skill, it takes practice to master. But with consistency and commitment, you’ll start to see profound shifts in your ability to transmute anxiety into excitement and courageous action.

The Power of Shifting from Anxiety to ExcitementWith practice, you’ll start to see anxiety not as an enemy, but as an invitation to grow beyond your self-imposed limitations. You’ll develop a new relationship with your fears – one of curiosity, compassion, and courage. You’ll discover a profound truth: behind each of your fears lies a great desire. The gateway to your deepest fulfillment often lies at the very edge of your comfort zone.

So, the next time anxiety comes knocking, take a heart-centered breath and remember: you’re just one breath and one thought away from transforming it into excitement. You have within you all the strength, wisdom, and resilience you need to meet this moment and emerge victorious. If I can do it, so can you!

Final ThoughtsBehind your anxiety, there is a deeper desire to feel fully alive. The world needs more people like you who are willing to face their fears with an open heart and let their deepest excitement lead the way. As philosopher, theologian, educator, and civil rights leader Dr. Howard Thurman once wrote:

“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

May you find the courage to transcend your anxiety and fears and come fully alive today – and every day hereafter. If you’re interested in diving deeper into understanding and transforming anxiety, I invite you to explore my three-part series on the topic:

In an era where stress and tension pervade our everyday lives, comprehensive and effective strategies for conquering anxiety have become crucial. This article serves as the culmination of a three-part exploration into understanding and managing anxiety, beginning with identifying its 20 most prevalent symptoms and disecting the 12 most common triggers. In this final part, I want to share a transformative and heart-centered approach to help you master anxiety, empowering you with tools to not just manage but transcend this unsettling emotion.

This approach, which I created for myself and has proven beneficial for all my clients and students, is quite unique. It leverages the science of heart-brain coherence, proven psychological processes, and spiritual technologies to help you address the root cause of your anxiety. It will also strengthen your emotional and spiritual core so that you can face life’s unexpected twists and turns with greater ease.

After sharing the framework, I’ll provide an example of how I applied it to get back on my feet during the most critical period of my life. Applying this framework to your life will not only transform you into a true heart warrior but also enable you to live a deeply fulfilling and purposeful life. Are you ready? Let’s dive in.

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

– Franklin D. Roosevelt

A long term, sustainable solution to conquer anxiety needs to address the root cause behind our feelings of anxiety: fear. This involves both awareness and a deeper understanding of what is really going on beneath the surface. Along with this, we must calm the nervous system, rewire our brains, develop new habits, cultivate self-love, compassion, and acceptance, and establish a strong connection with our inner selves.

The heart-centered approach to managing anxiety that I’m about to share emphasizes the important role of the heart in this process. Your heart, remember, is not only the center of your emotional system but also the epicenter of your electromagnetic system, as well as your spiritual core. As you’ll shortly see, it holds the key to helping you transition from fear into love.

A Guide to Conquering Anxiety the Heart-Centered Way1) Recognize the Symptoms of AnxietyAnxiety often manifests through a range of physical and psychological symptoms. In the first article, I discussed 20 of the most common ones. These can include feelings of unease, such as worry or fear, physical sensations like a rapid heartbeat or heavy breathing, and changes in behavior, such as avoiding situations that may cause anxiety. Recognizing these symptoms is the first step in understanding and managing your anxiety. It’s important to note that these symptoms can vary greatly from person to person and it’s always best to consult with a healthcare professional if you’re experiencing symptoms of anxiety.

2) Identify the Triggering SituationThe second step in conquering anxiety is identifying the situations that are triggering it – as I discussed in my previous article on 12 common situations that trigger feelings of anxiety in most people. These could be external scenarios like high-pressure work situations, financial strain, or toxic relationships, or internal triggers like unresolved trauma, negative self-talk, or excessive worry. The crucial part here is awareness – knowing what brings on your anxiety can help you prepare and manage your response effectively.

By identifying these triggers, you can begin to anticipate and prepare for them ahead of time and do the necessary inner work that will allow you to manage your anxiety more effectively. The goal is not to avoid these situations – most of them are simply unavoidable aspects of life and part of the human condition – but to develop effective strategies to navigate through them with grace and resilience.

3) Acknowledge Your ReactionNow that you’ve recognized the symptoms and identified the situation that’s triggering feelings of fear and uncertainty – and therefore your brain and nervous system’s response – it’s time to tackle anxiety. You must become aware of, acknowledge, and take ownership of how you typically react to stressful events. This involves examining three key components: your reactive emotion, the reactive story, and your reactive behaviors. Let’s explore each.

Reactive EmotionsEmotional reactions are the immediate feelings that surface when you’re stressed. For instance, you might experience feelings of anger, fear, impatience, or frustration. These emotions might be uncomfortable, but they are natural responses to stressors. Hence, ask yourself:

  • What feelings usually emerge when you’re anxious?
  • What is the initial emotion that arises?

Reactive StoryNext, become aware of the stories you begin to tell yourself. These can manifest as thoughts like, “I can’t handle this,” “I always mess up in these situations,” “People don’t like me,” or “There must be something wrong with me, maybe I’m not good enough,” among others. Even though these thoughts may feel real in the moment, they don’t accurately represent the truth. They are merely mental narratives that your rational mind constructs to comprehend what might be happening, based on past experiences. Thus, ask yourself:

  • Which negative thoughts often surface when you experience anxiety?
  • What is the story that your mind begins to weave?

Reactive BehaviorsFinally, become aware of your behavior when you’re feeling anxious or stressed. This could be avoiding the situation, denying there’s a problem, withdrawing from others, blaming others, or criticizing yourself. By becoming aware of these behaviors, you can start to choose healthier responses. Think about this:

  • What do you usually do when you’re feeling insecure, fearful, or anxious?
  • What are some of the habits or behaviors you engage in order to avoid feeling insecure?

To better understand yourself and grow, commit to spending a few quiet moments each day observing and becoming aware of how you react emotionally, mentally, and behaviorally when triggered by an unexpected situation or event. Do this with kindness and curiosity, not judgment.

4) Connect With Your HeartNow that you’ve acknowledged your reactions, it’s time to establish a deeper connection with your heart, creating a bridge to your emotional, energetic, and spiritual core. This science-backed practice involves focusing your mind on the rhythmic beats of your heart and regulating your breath, a key strategy to mitigate the grip of anxiety.

Accomplish this by placing a hand over your heart and breathing slowly, deeply, and rhythmically. Visualize and feel each breath you take flowing in and out through your heart. This simple technique, developed by the HeartMath Institute, will help you neutralize the destructive effects of negative emotions. For a detailed explanation of this technique, read my guide, What is Heart I ntelligence?

With each slow, focused breath, your body’s stress responses are deactivated, reducing stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. This proven method halts your brain’s basic stress responses that amplify anxiety. Simultaneously, it enhances communication between disparate parts of your brain, the logical and emotional, promoting a sense of grounded clarity. After a few minutes of practicing this, you’ll feel grounded, and start seeing the situation triggering your anxiety differently.

5) Address The Root CauseFeeling more grounded, calmer, and present, it’s time to dive deep into the more fundamental aspects of your being. This inward journey involves uncovering those core feelings, core fears, andunmet core need that your reactive feelings, stories, and behaviors were trying to protect. This requires self-inquiry, a process that needs to be approached with complete honesty, open-mindedness, and patience. Only then will you be able to address the root cause of your anxiety!

Uncover the Core FeelingsYour core feelings represents those intense, often underlying emotions that lie beneath your feelings of anxiety. These could include feelings of vulnerability, grief, loneliness, abandonment, shame, or insecurity – to name a few. Sometimes, it’s a tumultuous yet gloomy mix of these feelings. To explore what might be the core feelings behind your anxiety, consider these questions:

  • What is the more profound feeling you are experiencing in relation to your anxiety?
  • When in your life have you felt this way before? Can you trace it to a specific situation in your past?
  • What situations or people tend to stir up these feelings within you the most?

Confront the Core FearImmediately following our core feelings are our core fears. These can range from a fear of inadequacy, to being viewed as insignificant, or simply harboring a fear of not being enough. Others may fear abandonment, death, or even the unknown. These anxieties serve as defense mechanisms and only by identifying them can we hope to effectively address them. Consequently, here are some questions:

  • What is the deepest fear being triggered by the situation you’re in?
  • What would happen if your worst fears about this situation were realized?
  • Is this fear based on a credible threat or past experience, or is it an irrational construct of your mind?

Address the Core NeedThe core need represents the fundamental emotional needs that each individual craves. We all have them, as they form an integral part of our human experience. Whether it’s the need to feel safe, loved, valuable, or simply acknowledged, these emotional needs are paramount to our survival. Acknowledging these needs does not exhibit weakness. Rather, it signifies a profound act of personal strength. Reflect on these questions to better understand your needs:

  • Which core emotional needs are not being met or are threatened by this situation?
  • What exactly do you need to feel or experience deep down in order to feel safe?
  • If these needs cannot be immediately met, how can you create an environment that nurtures them?

By attending to your core feelings, fears, and needs, you embark on a personal journey of self-healing that originates from within. This empowers you to manage your anxiety in a more conscious, compassionate, and heart-centered manner.

6) Embrace a Bigger TruthHaving exposed what is really happening at the core, it’s now time to tap into the wisdom of your heart. Transcending anxiety’s circumscribed perspective requires invoking a deeper, more expansive truth about the reality of our existence. This truth can only arise from the profound spiritual beliefs and convictions you hold deep inside your heart. This change of perspective will inevitably result in a change of heart. And when the heart changes, everything changes.

Pose these empowering questions to yourself:

  • What is the ultimate truth about my innate capacity to transcend this situation?
  • What is the broader spiritual lesson I’m being asked to master or learn?
  • What belief or conviction will help me get through to the other side?

When you sincerely connect with the wisdom of your heart and the most transcendent aspects of your spiritual understanding, your perspective on a particular situation changes. It morphs into one which contextualizes challenges as opportunities for initiation into greater self-actualization, personal mastery, and soul-awakening.

Heart-Centered Meditation can be powerful tools in anchoring this broader truth within ourselves. Regular meditation helps us to cultivate a state of calm and centeredness, allowing us to better access our inner wisdom and resilience. Prayer can also be a potent method for connecting with a higher power or universal energy, providing a sense of comfort and guidance during times of anxiety. Incorporating these practices into our daily routines can help us maintain a heart-centered approach to managing anxiety, reminding us of our inherent strength and transformative power of compassion and self-understanding.

7) Choose Your ResponseYou’re finally ready to break free from the vicious cycle of reactive feelings, stories, and behaviors by consciously choosing a more compassionate, loving, or heart-directed response. This response is not driven by a reactive ego or survival instinct, but rather arises from the heart. This key change reshapes our neural connections, paving the way for healthier responses. This concept aligns with Tej Steiner’s Five Ways of Being – a framework I teach in my courses and programs. In this process, unconscious reactions rooted in fear are replaced with conscious responses that are driven by wisdom, compassion, and a deeper alignment with your core.

Respond with Compassion The first step is to confront the symptoms of anxiety, as well as the reactive feelings, stories, behaviors, core feelings, core fears, and unmet core needs with kindness and compassion towards yourself – or any others who may have triggered these responses. Everyone is doing their best with the information and experience they have at the time, including you. Instead of being hard on yourself, affirm your inherent worthiness, and accept your sensitivities and profound emotions as essential elements of your human experience.

A useful technique for achieving this is the HeartMath technique previously shared. Once you’ve neutralized negative emotions, recall feelings of care, appreciation, gratitude, or compassion. Think of a time in your life when you experienced compassion, and then consciously extend those feelings towards yourself.

As I discussed in my recent article on the distinctions between sympathy, empathy, and compassion, compassion represents an energy that nurtures and respects all life and strives to alleviate suffering. The key is the activation of self-compassion, so your response emerges from a compassionate place, subsequently reducing anxiety or fear.

In essence, I want you to feel compassion towards yourself. That’s the first step in easing your own suffering.

Reframe Your StoryNow that you’ve eased the pain and can view the situation through the lens of compassion by acknowledging the larger truth about this experience, it’s time to reframe the story in your mind. The way to do this is by replacing it with one that will serve you better and empower you to move forward, thus conquering anxiety. Here are some questions to consider:

  • What new story can you start telling yourself about this situation?
  • Do you have a specific affirmation or power statement that you can use as a mantra?
  • What fresh narrative can you create that reveals the truth about this situation?

By reframing the story, while infused with acceptance, appreciation, and compassion, you can navigate this situation with greater efficacy. This new mindset will also enable you to consciously choose more empowering behaviors.

Choose Empowering Behaviors Empowering behaviors are actions or responses that support your wellbeing, honor your core needs, and align with your heart’s desires and fundamental truths. This might entail setting boundaries in interactions that typically provoke anxiety, prioritizing self-care, or reaching out to a trusted friend or professional when you need to express your fears and concerns.

To discover these new behaviors, ask yourself:

Given what just transpired and how I’m feeling about it…

  • What is the most loving or compassionate thing I can do for myself?
  • What is the most loving or compassionate thing I can do for others?
  • What would God / Life / Source / Spirit have me do in this situation?

By consciously choosing empowering behaviors, you cultivate an internal environment that fosters emotional resilience and spiritual connection, thereby reducing anxiety. Your world perspective shifts, with fear and stress dissipating, replaced by a sense of safety, acceptance, and compassion.

By adopting this heart-based approach, you are empowered to shape a life founded on heart-brain coherence, self-awareness, and emotional resilience.

How I Applied This Framework During the Most Critical Moment of My Life

“The only way out, is in. The only path to transcending fear and anxiety is through the heart.”

In 2008, I experienced a series of traumatic events that shook me to my core. Shortly after traveling to South Africa, I was mugged, lost my job, and worst of all, my mother passed away due to lung cancer. Living abroad in a foreign country, I found myself grappling with intense feelings of anxiety about my life, future, and survival. However, this challenging period also served as the crucible in which I learned to apply the heart-centered, scientific, and spiritually based approach to managing anxiety that I’ve shared here.

Here is how I applied it:

Recognize the Symptoms of Anxiety: My anxiety manifested in various ways, including sleepless nights, pain in my chest, a constant sense of dread, and an overwhelming fear of the unknown. I realized that these were all symptoms of my anxiety, and acknowledging them was the first step towards managing it.

Identify the Triggering Situation: The triggering situations were clear: the mugging had left me feeling unsafe, losing my job brought financial instability, and my mother’s death caused immense grief. Recognizing these triggers helped me understand what I was dealing with.

Acknowledge Your Reaction: I noticed a pattern in my reactions to these stressful events. I felt fear and helplessness, told myself that I was alone and incapable of overcoming these challenges, and started withdrawing from social interactions. Acknowledging these reactions was crucial in understanding how I typically responded to anxiety.

Connect With Your Heart: Amidst the chaos, I started practicing heart-centered meditation. Focusing on the rhythm of my heart and controlling my breathing helped me feel grounded and reduced the intensity of my anxiety. This helped me feel more calm and at ease, and somehow lessened my suffering.

Address The Root Cause: I delved deeper into my feelings and realized that at the core, I felt abandoned and scared. I was afraid of being alone and not being able to survive on my own. My biggest fear was that I would not be able to survive this experience. My core need was to feel secure and loved. Acknowledging these feelings, fears, and needs was a major step towards my healing.

Embrace a Bigger Truth: Despite the overwhelming fear and uncertainty, I held onto the belief that I had the strength to overcome these challenges. I believed that God was with me, and he was putting me through these situations to make me stronger, and that these experiences were pushing me to become more resilient and self-reliant, and in many ways closer to Him. I started to tell myself, ‘what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger’ and ‘My heart will guide me towards the life God has prepared for me.’ This shift in perspective helped me see my situation in a new light.

Choose Your Response: Instead of letting fear control my actions, I made the conscious decision to respond with compassion and courage. I made myself available to others and took steps to ensure my safety, sought new job opportunities, and allowed myself to grieve my mother’s loss. I reframed my story from one of victimhood to one of growth and resilience. This new response ultimately led me along the path towards Heart Leadership and ultimately becoming the person I am today and being able to help thousands who like me are going through similar experiences.

The heart-centered approach to conquering anxiety not only helped me during this difficult time, but it has also empowered me to face future challenges with greater resilience and grace.

Creating an Integrated Lifestyle That Minimizes AnxietyIn addition to the seven steps I outlined above, it’s crucial to embrace new lifestyle habits and supplemental practices that promote wellness. For instance, regular exercise not only reduces stress hormones but also stimulates the production of endorphins, our body’s natural mood boosters. Consuming a balanced diet provides our body with essential vitamins and minerals that positively affect our mood and energy. A good night’s sleep is as important as it bolsters resilience against anxiety. Poor sleep can exacerbate anxiety symptoms, making it key to prioritize quality rest and sleep.

Being part of a supportive community and spending time with loved ones provide a sense of acceptance and belonging. It assures us that we’re not isolated in our struggles, which is empowering during challenging times. Engaging in creative activities can act as a therapeutic outlet for expressing emotions and reducing anxiety. Such activities can foster a sense of achievement and purpose, significantly enhancing self-esteem and mood.

Practicing heart-brain coherence, heart-centerd meditation, and heart-centered prayer can also be beneficial. These practices promote inner peace and balance, strengthening the communication between our heart and brain, allowing us to manage stress more effectively. Adopting these lifestyle choices can enhance our emotional systems and promote mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health.

By consciously choosing these nurturing behaviors, you arm yourself with tools to manage anxiety effectively and cultivate harmony and wellbeing.

Final ThoughtsThe heart-based solution to conquering anxiety I have shared here, brings together the most effective strategies, tools, and techniques I have learned to address not just your emotional, but also your mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. By being aware of your personal triggers and responses, deepening your connection with your heart, and addressing the root cause of your anxiety, you will undoubtedly be able to conquer anxiety and eliminate its symptoms.

I sincerely hope you have enjoyed this three-article series on anxiety. My overarching intention has been to empower you, increase your awareness, and help you live more fully and wholeheartedly, allowing you to see anxiety from a completely different perspective. All of this is for you to become the best, most loving, courageous, and compassionate version of yourself.

Finally, remember, fear is natural but anxiety is optional. We all experience fear at times, but we also possess the power to manage, conquer, and transcend the negative effects of anxiety through the power of our hearts. It’s my hope that, armed with these insights, you’ll harness this power to turn fear and anxiety from a dominating force into a motivator for personal mastery and spiritual growth.

So breathe deeply, keep calm, and take the first step on the journey to conquering anxiety once and for all! You got this.

In my previous article, we explored the 20 most common symptoms of anxiety that affect millions of people worldwide. Being aware of these symptoms is the first step in getting your anxiety under control. This week, I’d like to invite you to dive deeper with me into understanding what causes anxiety in the first place by exploring the 12 most common anxiety triggers you should be cautious about.

Prolonged feelings of anxiety can be extremely hard on the body. As someone who has helped many people deal with anxiety and having experienced it myself, I can deeply empathize with the daily struggles it creates. My hope is that by shedding light on the most common situations that trigger anxiety, you’ll feel empowered to manage your feelings of anxiety in healthier, more loving, and compassionate ways.

Let’s get started.

Understanding the Nature of AnxietyAs I discussed in my previous article, anxiety, in essence, can be seen as a natural response of your body to perceived threats. It’s an intrinsic part of the human survival instinct – a warning signal, if you will, akin to the body’s alarm system. In situations we consider dangerous or unsettling, our bodies react by inducing a state of heightened alertness and readiness as a form of protection.

This innate reaction is deeply rooted in fear. But it’s worth noting the complexity within this fear. It’s not necessarily about fearing what we know, but often about fearing the unknown, the uncertain. A great proportion of this fear stems from a variety of situations that we find challenging, disconcerting, or at times, even overwhelming.

A Deeply Personal ExperienceAnxiety is a wide-ranging, deeply personal experience. Its triggers can be as unique as the individuals themselves. That’s why it’s important to remember that what may cause anxiety in one person may not necessarily be a trigger for someone else. As they say, one man’s poison is another man’s medicine.

With this in mind, I’ve identified 12 common situations where anxiety tends to surface most frequently. These are definitely not exhaustive, but they serve as a solid starting point, allowing us to delve deeper into understanding the multifaceted nature of anxiety and the most common types of situations that trigger it.

As we go through each of these anxiety-inducing situations, remember that identifying your own triggers is the first step in managing your anxiety. Knowing what causes your fear and anxiety will equip you with invaluable insights. And this knowledge can guide you towards effectively coping with your anxiety.

12 Common Anxiety Triggers You Need to Be Aware Of1. Work and Career Worry

“Stress is caused by being ‘here’ but wanting to be ‘there’.'”

– Eckhart Tolle

Workplace stress, such as dealing with tense relationships or tight deadlines, can be a significant anxiety trigger. Challenges like facing job insecurity, pressures to excel, and long hours can lead to unease and worry.

  • The pressure of meeting expectations, amplified by our desire to succeed and be recognized, can precipitate anxiety. Navigating this remains a challenge due to the uncertainties of outcomes.
  • Imposter syndrome acts as a potent trigger, causing us to feel like frauds waiting to be discovered. This continual self-doubt fuels anxiety, leading to a self-perpetuating cycle.
  • Anxiety can also stem from the fear of job loss. The financial instability implied by unemployment, and the stress of job hunting, can wreak havoc on our sense of well-being.
  • Anxiety is often invoked by upcoming work commitments like presentations or deadlines. The stress of being evaluated and the pressure to perform can adversely affect your health and escalate your anxiety levels.

  • Financial ProblemsOften, anxiety can be traced back to monetary concerns, which is understandable as financial stability plays a crucial part in our lives. It’s an unnerving feeling when our financial state seems unreliable or beyond our control. Let’s take a look at a few examples where financial issues could potentially induce anxiety:

  • Encountering unexpected high-cost expenses such as emergency medical care or urgent home repairs, without having a sufficient savings buffer to cover them.

  • Job loss without having any secondary source of income or recovery plan.
  • Being burdened by student loans or credit card debts that seem daunting and immense.
  • Struggling to accumulate enough savings for milestone acquisitions, such as buying a house for the first time, or other significant expenses.

  • Social Pressures and Unmet Expectations

“The only pressure I’m under is the pressure I’ve put on myself.”

    – Mark Messier

Living in a society often conveys implicit standards of appearance and acceptable behavioral patterns. Consequently, as individuals, we may develop internal pressures, creating an unseen but substantial source of anxiety. For example:

  • Experiencing societal pressure to appear constantly ‘happy’ despite authentic emotions can lead to poor well-being and increased anxiety.
  • Social situations such as parties or public events can instigate social anxiety disorder. This is marked by intense worry, self-consciousness, and a fear of being judged, embarrassed, or humiliated.
  • Body-image pressures, driven by society’s depiction of an ‘ideal’ body, can lead to substantial worries, particularly among women who internalize this thin ideal and engage in social comparisons.
  • Failing to achieve social milestones such as getting married, having children, or owning a home can lead to feelings of anxiety, and a sensation of being left behind or judged for not being successful.

  • Health WorriesIt’s perfectly normal for our minds to spin out of control at the first sign of a health scare – whether it’s an unfamiliar ache, a brand-new pain, or a worrying symptom. There are several health-related situations that often kick our anxiety into overdrive:

  • Panic at the sight of an unusual mole or a sudden change in your skin tone – could it possibly be skin cancer?

  • Feeling a strange tightness in your chest and being plagued with the horrific thought – is it a heart attack?
  • Having a family history of certain diseases and living in the perpetual fear of displaying similar symptoms.
  • Receiving not-so-pleasant news at your annual health check-up – high cholesterol, for instance, can set off alarm bells in your mind.

  • Relationship ProblemsRelationship problems, spanning from romantic entanglements to friendships and family relationships, often pave the way to anxiety. Conflict, breakups, and toxic or unbalanced relationship issues can stir up significant stress, leading to anxiety. Here are a few examples:

  • Coping with trust issues: Difficulties in trusting your partner can lead to a constant state of worry or fear.

  • Enduring criticism: Regularly being the target of harsh words or criticism can create a tense environment, fostering anxiety.
  • Managing arguments: Frequent disagreements, particularly if they’re unresolved or left to fester, can intensify feelings of unease.
  • Feeling neglected or overlooked: When you feel like your needs are consistently being ignored, it can create an ongoing state of stress.
  • Dealing with distorted communication: Not being able to communicate effectively, or feeling misunderstood, can certainly be an anxiety trigger.
  • Maintaining a relationship with a narcissist or an emotionally/physically abusive person.

  • World EventsIt’s completely natural to experience a sense of worry or unease in response to distressing global occurrences like:

  • Environmental disasters, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, or hurricanes.

  • Health crises such as worldwide pandemics leading to loss of lives and disruption of daily activities.
  • Economic disturbances or societal strife propagating a sense of global insecurity.
  • Instances of terrorism or violent acts in locations previously deemed safe.
  • Exposure to conspiracy theories and fake news that propagate fear.

  • Parenting StressConcerns about children often stir up feelings of anxiety for many parents. The triggers may include but are not limited to the following:

  • A health-related scare may transform even a common cold into a severe medical concern.

  • Future career prospects and financial security of kids can be a constant source of worry.
  • The societal expectation to be ever watchful or ‘helicopter parents’ can drive up anxiety levels.
  • Struggles with conception and infertility can induce significant stress.
  • Concerns for the emotional and mental health of the offspring could lead to persistent worry.

  • Unresolved Past Trauma or AbusePast traumatic experiences, including PTSD and abuse, can deeply impact individuals, leading to lingering anxiety. This can manifest through troubling memories triggering panic attacks or flashbacks, fear of recurrence of past events, and difficulties in maintaining healthy relationships post-mistreatment. For instance, anxiety related to trauma or abuse can manifest in many scenarios, such as:

  • Interacting with people who resemble the abuser in any manner, such as similar physical traits or behaviors.

  • Visiting places or engaging in activities related to the past traumatic event.
  • Observing dates or anniversaries that pertain to the trauma.
  • Encountering triggers in movies, news, or social media involving abuse or violence.
  • Experiencing certain sounds, sights, or smells that remind one of the traumatic incident.

Unresolved trauma, repressed pain, grief, and other deep-seated emotions can often lead individuals to resort to alcohol, drugs, or misuse prescription medications in an attempt to numb the distress. This act, however, tends to serve as a temporary fix and often exacerbates the issue in the long run. While addictions themselves may not be the root cause of anxiety, they can significantly worsen the condition. Hence, it’s of utmost importance to address the primary emotional triggers for a genuine and lasting solution.

  1. Significant Life Changes

“Our anxiety does not come from thinking about the future, but from wanting to control it.”

    – Kahlil Gibran

It’s perfectly natural to feel a twinge of anxiety when there’s a major shakeup in your life. These significant life changes can usher in a wave of uncertainty and stress. You’re stepping into the unknown, and naturally, that can cause some apprehension about what awaits you. Easing such anxiety requires understanding and acknowledging it.

  • Losing a job or starting a new one.
  • Moving to a new place.
  • Getting married or getting a divorce.
  • Welcoming a new baby into the family.
  • Retirement or going on disability.
  • Being diagnosed with a serious medical condition.
  • Experiencing a major financial change, like bankruptcy or unemployment.
  • The death of a loved one.
  • Having a serious accident or undergoing major surgery.
  • Dealing with legal issues.
  • Traveling to foreign lands and not speaking the language.

  • Loneliness and IsolationThe feeling of disconnection is such a profoundly human experience that it can induce overwhelming feelings of anxiety. This sense of disconnect can come in many forms:

  • Feeling abandoned or emotionally distant from loved ones.

  • Struggling to form meaningful connections in new environments.
  • Experiencing a lack of common ground or understanding in social settings.

When we feel disconnected, we might feel as if we are alone in our experiences, exacerbating feelings of fear and anxiety. This sense of aloneness can be particularly magnified in a society where ‘connectedness’ is often reduced to the number of social media followers we have, leaving us feeling isolated despite being ‘connected’ digitally.

Isolation, whether physical or emotional, could lead to developing harmful addictions. Addictive behaviors often become a coping strategy to mitigate uncomfortable feelings of loneliness and anxiety. An individual may resort to harmful substances or negative behaviors to provide a temporary ‘solution’ to their distress. However, these often exacerbate the feelings of isolation in the long term.

  1. Technology and Social MediaOur digital landscape, packed with many benefits, also comes with a unique set of stressors. Technological advancement, while enabling unprecedented levels of connection, introduces us to certain pitfalls. The following are some reasons:

  2. We are inclined to incessantly compare ourselves with others, given the skewed and idyllic representations of life portrayed on social media.

  3. An expectation to present an unblemished life narrative for our digital audience can amplify anxiety.
  4. The dreaded phenomenon of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) often strikes when we notice our friends embracing myriad activities on their virtual platforms.
  5. We can easily be overwhelmed and stressed due to the surfeit of information readily available at our fingertips.

  6. PerfectionismPerfectionism, paired with overly high personal expectations, can push us into a vortex of anxiety. This cycle cultivates a profound fear associated with mistakes, criticism, or failure to meet self-imposed standards. This self-imposed pressure can seep into different facets of life, including work, social interactions, and personal self-expectations. Here are a few examples:

  7. Work-Related: Continually fearing that you’re not doing a good enough job, and constantly scrutinizing your performance.

  8. Social Interactions: Avoiding social events or gatherings due to the fear of being judged or feeling not good enough.
  9. Academic Pressure: Constant unease in an educational setting, obsessing over every score or grade, fearing any score that is less than perfect.
  10. Personal Relationships: Obsessing over perceived imperfections in close relationships, constantly doubting your worth and fearing rejection.
  11. Physical Appearance: Persistent worry about your looks and body image, striving for an unattainable idea of physical perfection.
  12. Health and Fitness: Fearing any deviation from a strict diet or workout routine, associating self-worth with bodily perfection.

The Role of Genetics, Family History, and Personality TypesGenetics account for approximately 30% to 40% of the risk for anxiety, indicating that genes play a significant role. If one or both of your parents have an anxiety disorder, you’re more likely to develop one too. However, this doesn’t guarantee that you will suffer from anxiety if it runs in your family; instead, it heightens your vulnerability. It’s crucial to remember that your environment, experiences, and personal resilience also count significantly.

Often, the emotional patterns we’ve grown accustomed to, such as anxiety or continuous worry, are not entirely of our own making. Embedded in our family environments, these patterns can be a reflection of what we’ve learned to mirror as children. We’re not speaking about genetics here, but rather learned behaviors and responses. From a tender age, we start developing coping mechanisms based on those that exist in our surroundings.

Our personalities and individual characteristics significantly contribute to the likelihood and severity of anxiety disorders. For instance, if you have an inherent tendency towards introversion, shyness, or low self-esteem, or if you constantly strive for perfection, this can elevate your risk. These traits often lead us to internalize stress and fear, thus creating the conditions for anxiety.

Recognizing Your Personal Anxiety TriggersThe journey towards reigning in, healing, and transcending your anxiety begins with a crucial first step – awareness. By observing and acknowledging the situations that trigger your anxiety and how your body reacts, you equip yourself with a powerful healing tool. Remember, we cannot change that which we are unaware of.

These anxiety-provoking situations often elicit physical symptoms, which might seem alarming at first. However, it’s pivotal to understand the inherent innocence within you. Instead of perceiving these symptoms as threats, try viewing them as your body’s way of sending you a message. Your body is alerting you of a perceived threat, doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Addressing the Root Cause of AnxietyAt the heart of anxiety lies a single force: fear. Whether conspicuous or hidden in the depths of our subconscious, fear is generally the foundational emotion from which anxiety blossoms. It is crucial to understand that dealing with anxiety is not about battling the symptoms. Rather, it involves peeling back the layers of fear that lie beneath.

In essence, a thorough solution needs to address not only the fear but also recognize the emotions powering it, the belief systems associated with it, and its energetic/vibrational component. Once these components are understood, we can effectively use strategies like Heart/Brain Coherence and Emotional Self-Regulation. These techniques aren’t just designed to help us handle our anxiety but also to reprogram our brain and even alter our DNA—as corroborated by the field of epigenetics—leading to a transformative change in our reactions to fear and anxiety.

In the next article, we will further explore these fascinating techniques and how they can help you master your anxiety.

Final ThoughtsAs we reach the conclusion of this article, remember: fear is a natural part of life, but anxiety is optional. Life’s twists and turns are inevitable, and fear or apprehension are natural reactions. However, constant worry, or anxiety, is not an essential part of the human experience. It’s crucial to remember that anxiety arises not from the situations we encounter, but from our body’s response to these events.

“It’s not stress that kills us, it’s our reaction to it.”

– Hans Selye

If you’re currently experiencing feelings of anxiety, awareness is your primary weapon. Understanding the types of situations that trigger anxiety in you, and how your body responds to these perceived threats, is a necessary step in managing your anxiety once and for all.

Lastly, know that you’re not alone in this journey. As your coach and guide, I’m here to help you navigate these challenges, and use them to become emotionally resilient and spiritually stronger. Have you ever been hit with a pounding headache, or blurred vision, and immediately thought the worst? Or maybe you’ve experienced a racing heartbeat, intense nausea, and an unexplained feeling of dread all at once. If so, there’s a chance you’re not falling prey to a severe medical condition, but instead dealing with the unexpected and diverse symptoms of anxiety.

Shocking as it may seem, anxiety isn’t just a form of mental and emotional unrest, but it can manifest seemingly unrelated physical symptoms that can disrupt your everyday life. Often these symptoms of anxiety can be alarmingly similar to those of serious physical illnesses, which can increase your stress levels, providing fuel for a vicious cycle of chronic anxiety.

In this article, we’ll dive headfirst into the unsettling world of anxiety, identifying 20 different symptoms – both common and uncommon, that could be your body’s way of signaling anxiety. Understanding these symptoms of anxiety not only allows you to differentiate anxiety from other health conditions but also equips you with the knowledge to manage your anxiety better.

For each symptom, I’ll also delineate the causes, and along the journey, you’ll learn how to decode your body’s whispers into a language you can comprehend, enabling you to address it appropriately.

Let’s dive in…

Throughout my journey as a professional coach, HeartMath trainer, and spiritual teacher specializing in Heart Mastery, I’ve witnessed first-hand the far-reaching effects of anxiety. I’ve spent extensive hours working closely with numerous individuals grappling with the detrimental ramifications of anxiety. With endless worry, interrupted sleep, and an inability to find joy, anxiety does more than just dampen one’s spirits – it significantly undermines the quality of life. Witnessing individuals brimming with potential getting consumed by the relentless wave of anxiety is indeed a heartbreaking sight.

Today’s rapidly advancing society sees anxiety taking many forms and leaving no one untouched – be it the overworked corporate employee, the anxious homemaker, or the stressed student. While techniques like mindfulness, meditation, and HeartMath’s Quick Coherence are valuable tools for managing symptoms of anxiety, understanding and recognizing the core markers of anxiety remains critical. The escalating prevalence of anxiety in our fast-paced lives fuels my passion for breaking down this complex psychological condition.

What Exactly is Anxiety?Anxiety, a common psychosomatic condition, is characterized by heightened fear, restlessness, excessive worry, and preoccupied thinking about potential threats or uncertain outcomes. It triggers our nervous system’s stress response, resulting in physical symptoms that are easily identifiable. Recognizing and understanding the causes of these symptoms can be the initial step in learning how to manage your anxiety. So, I’m going to explain 20 common symptoms of anxiety, some of which may not be well-known, and the causes behind them.

20 Common Symptoms of Anxiety and What Causes Them1) Headaches The journey begins with an exploration of headaches, a common but sometimes misunderstood symptom of anxiety. As anxiety takes hold, it causes tension in your suboccipital muscles – a group of muscles found at the base of your skull. This tension can, in turn, trigger chronic headaches.

Some people might brush off these headaches as the result of a stressful day at work or insufficient sleep, however, in the presence of anxiety, it’s most likely that these frequent and persistent headaches are directly linked to your mental health condition. In fact, tension-type headaches are often associated with anxiety and depression. This is why it’s integral to consider anxiety as a potential cause when you start experiencing headaches more frequently than usual.

2) Blurred Vision A symptom of anxiety that’s typically under-recognized is blurred vision. When our body senses a threat, it releases an adrenaline surge, which triggers the dilation of our pupils. This natural response mechanism is designed to enhance our ability to perceive potential danger better, as larger pupils allow more light to enter and heighten the visual acuity significantly.

However, an intriguing paradox to this phenomenon is that this rush of adrenaline can sometimes, instead, cause blurred vision. Although it might seem counterintuitive, the factors causing this are highly complex. Adrenaline also accelerates our heartbeat and redirects blood flow towards major muscle groups. These changes reduce blood flow in the eyes and affect fluid balance, leading to temporary changes in vision.

3) Ringing in The Ears Experiencing a ringing sound in your ears, or tinnitus, is a less frequently talked about yet remarkably prevailing symptom of anxiety. Putting it simply, tinnitus is a condition where an individual hears a ringing or buzzing sound, which may be persistent or come and go, and yet, no external source for this sound exists. This condition varies significantly from person to person. For some, it’s a mere annoyance, while for others, it can cause significant distress, hampering their daily routine and sleep patterns.

The link between anxiety and tinnitus is intricate. The phenomenon is still being heavily researched, but it is known that stress and anxiety can exacerbate the perceived intensity of tinnitus. The cause behind tinnitus remains ambiguous to experts, but popular theories suggest that alterations in blood flow or pressure within the ear due to anxiety might be potential culprits.

4) Concentration Problems Experiencing difficulty with concentration or finding yourself enveloped in a hazy mental state? This symptom is linked to the body’s fight or flight response, which triggers the release of cortisol and adrenaline. In an attempt to respond to this perceived danger, your brain enters a state of hyperfocus. Not on your daily tasks or responsibilities, but on the potential threat it perceives.

Essentially, these hormonal changes can cause your brain to become overstimulated and may lead to concentration problems. This may also manifest as a ‘brain fog’, where you find it challenging to think clearly, make decisions, or remember things. It’s almost like trying to navigate through a thick fog – you can’t see clearly, and everything feels distant and blurry.

5) Lump in The Throat and Swallowing Difficulties If you’ve ever felt like there’s a lump in your throat or had trouble swallowing, you might have been experiencing symptoms of anxiety. This sensation is due to the body’s natural response when we feel threatened. When this occurs, our bodies instinctively allow more air to flow into our lungs as a preparatory measure for the perceived danger ahead. This is the brain’s protective mechanism as it believes your body needs to either flee or fight. Consequently, this physiological response can result in feelings of discomfort in your throat, often manifested as a lump or an obstruction, or it could even create the sensation of choking.

6) Difficulty Breathing During a panic attack, individuals often experience a significant surge in adrenaline levels which prompts faster breathing – a physical response designed to prepare the body for ‘fight or flight’. Unfortunately, this physical response can inadvertently escalate feelings of panic, leading to what is known as hyperventilation, a state where the affected individual resorts to rapid, shallow breaths instead of engaging in normal, deep breaths from the diaphragm.

This shift in breathing pattern significantly impacts the carbon dioxide levels in your blood, leading to a decrease that, in turn, sets off a chain reaction of various other symptoms, the details of which we will delve into as we progress through this article.

7) Dizziness and Feeling Faint Dizziness and a sense of feeling faint during a panic attack can indeed be a disconcerting experience. These feelings are usually elicited by hyperventilation and changes in blood flow in the ears. When anxious, your body releases adrenaline, which essentially primes it to respond to danger.

This response can affect various systems in your body, including your circulatory and respiratory systems. As your heart rate increases due to the adrenaline rush, your blood pressure rises as well. The rapid increase in blood flow can sometimes create an imbalance, causing less blood to reach your brain. This, in combination with hyperventilation, could result in feelings of dizziness and faintness.

8) Chest Pain or Tightness Feeling a tightness or discomfort in the chest can be a direct symptom of anxiety and a panic attack. This uncomfortable feeling is often due to a couple of key factors. The primary triggers are generally muscle tension and constrictions within the arteries or blood vessels of your heart.

So, what’s the reason behind this? Well, it boils down to hyperventilation. Hyperventilation, as discussed earlier, can cause your blood’s carbon dioxide levels to drop, this, in turn, makes your blood a bit more on the alkaline side. This change in blood’s pH can cause your arteries and blood vessels to narrow. While this feeling can be uncomfortable, it’s usually not harmful for most people.

9) Heart Palpitations and Skipped Heartbeats Under the influence of anxiety, sensations surrounding your heartbeat can become remarkably distinct. Be it heart palpitations – a strong, often rapid heartbeat that one can feel in their chest or throat – or feeling your heart ‘skip’ a beat. Both emergent responses occur as your heart works harder to prepare for perceived threats.

The latter, known medically as ectopic heartbeats, might be disconcerting but it’s important to note that they are seldom a cause for alarm. Even if you perceive these sensations in your throat, it’s simply a manifestation of increased blood flow and speed through your carotid arteries. While comprehensive explanation of these occurrences would edge into complicated medical parlance, in the end, they’re just demonstrative of your body’s reflex to anxiety.

10) Disrupted Sleep Patterns Anxiety often infringes upon our sleep. Frequent waking, trouble falling asleep, problems staying asleep, or waking up feeling unrefreshed – these disruptions in sleep patterns are major indicators of anxiety disorders. Anxiety can heighten sensitivity to the surroundings, making people more likely to wake up due to minor disturbances.

Moreover, anxiety-caused hyperarousal can upend sleep schedules, leading to daytime fatigue. Whether it’s anticipatory anxiety about a looming task or residual tension from the day’s stresses, disruptions in your slumber point towards an overly worried mind needing attention.

11) Nausea or Butterflies In The Stomach Your body, when confronted with a perceived threat, shifts its focus away from functions that are less crucial at the moment, such as the process of digesting food, a task that is typically a priority under standard conditions but falls to the wayside in the face of potential danger.

As a result of this shift, the supply of blood that would typically support your stomach’s digestion processes is instead redirected towards your arms and legs, a maneuver designed to further prepare and prime your body for a potentially necessary fight or flight response. Consequently, your tummy might feel as though it has been taken over by an army of fluttering butterflies, creating a sensation commonly referred to as ‘butterflies in the stomach’ or as feeling ‘fluttery’, a sensation that is, in itself, another symptom of the anxiety you might be experiencing.

12) GERD or Acid IndigestionHave you ever experienced an unpleasant bout of GERD, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease, or a nasty bout of acid indigestion? If you have, you might be surprised to learn that anxiety could be the underlying cause. When your body goes into a state of high, recognizing a alert perceived threat, it responds by redirecting the blood flow from your digestive system – responsible for breaking down food into nutrients and energy – to your muscles.

This preparatory action equips you for the evolutionary “fight or flight” response. However, a significant side-effect of this is a slow-down in your digestion process, which can lead to a buildup of stomach acid. This can, in turn, lead to chronic heartburn and indigestion – frequent and uncomfortable outcomes of prolonged anxiety. Furthermore, this can create a vicious cycle, where the discomfort stemming from your stomach triggers further bouts of anxiety, locking you into a frustrating loop that seems inescapable.

13) Bowel Changes When nerve-wracking situations arise, do you often find yourself desperately looking for the closest restroom? This is more common than you might think, as anxiety is known to interfere with our bowel movements. During times of stress, the nerves in our body can expedite the passage of food through our digestive system, which can result in loose stools or even diarrhea.

This can be particularly jarring if you are in a public place or a situation where you can’t readily access a bathroom. Strangely enough, everyone’s body reacts differently to anxiety, and in some cases, the reaction can be just the opposite, causing a significant slowdown in bowel activity and leading to constipation, a condition that brings its own set of uncomfortable challenges.

14) An Overactive BladderAnxiety, a condition perplexing in its expression, surprisingly could lead to an increased need to urinate, a symptom that although common among those who deal with anxiety, still stands as relatively mysterious as the underlying cause continues to remain somewhat unclear, stimulating theories and inviting conjecture about its roots.

One plausible explanation that presents itself is the possibility of muscle tension inducing undue pressure on the bladder, whereas more in-depth theories propose a likely association between the cortisol-induced effects on the bladder and the complex interplay of the serotonin system, each suggesting an interconnection with anxiety, all underpinning the fact that frequent urination is indeed a very common feature to emerge amongst those battling anxiety.

15) Tremors and Twitches Whenever a threat is perceived by your body, it sets off a series of responses to get ready for action. These include increasing the blood supply to certain areas, tensing the muscles for either a fight or flight reaction, boosting blood sugar, and preparing the body as a whole for a potential confrontation.

This heightened state of readiness can lead to physical symptoms such as tremors or muscle twitches that can sometimes happen in rather unexpected places, like your eye. If you have experienced these physical responses and are feeling concerned, understand that your body is merely responding as it is naturally programmed to when faced with danger.

16) Feelings of Skin Crawling or BurningMoving on to a tad out of the ordinary yet of equal importance symptom – experiencing your skin as though it’s crawling or even undergoing a burning sensation. Such a feeling is often due to shifts in blood circulation during spells of heightened anxiety.

Moreover, anxious situations release a stress hormone named cortisol, which can render your skin more susceptible to allergens, specific chemicals, or even to the sweat your body produces. Like many of your body’s reactions in these circumstances, this is yet another aspect of your internal self-defense system responding to perceived threats.

17) Derealization or DepersonalizationIf you’ve ever felt an out-of-body experience or as though you were observing your life events in a detached state, you’re not alone. This can be a symptom of anxiety known as depersonalization. It’s as if all of a sudden there’s a glass wall separating you from your physical self, creating the sensation of being in a dreamlike state. You might question the reality of your own existence or experience a distorted sense of time and space. You grasp onto reality, but everything seems distant and unreal.

On the other hand, derealization takes depersonalization to another level: not only do you feel distant from your own self, but the world around you also appears hazy, foggy, and unfamiliar. It’s as if the vibrancy and vividness of life are muted. People and things around you may seem strangely lifeless or visual perception may be distorted with objects appearing flattened or looming.

The root cause for these unsettling sensations lies primarily in the process of hyperventilation—an overbreathing condition that upsets your body’s natural balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide, leading to an alkaline shift in your blood levels. The blood becomes too alkaline and affects the brain, altering its normal functions, thus causing the aforementioned sensations of unreality. Dealing with such experiences can be a daunting task. But don’t forget, understanding the concept and causes behind these symptoms is the first step to manage your anxiety.

18) Excessive Body HeatFeeling unexpectedly warm or even slightly feverish during a period of anxiety is a fascinating symptom. In fact, it’s your body’s natural response to perceived threats. Think of it like your body bracing itself for a bout of physical activity, such as running or exercising. When you’re in an anxious state, your body prepares itself for potential dangers, a remnant response from our ancestors’ times when a physical threat often meant a fight or flight situation.

This increase in heat is essentially the result of improved blood flow throughout your body. When the brain detects stress, it signals the heart to pump faster, delivering more blood to your muscles. This increased blood flow elevates your body temperature, hence the the unexpected warmth.

19) Weakness or FatigueAfter confronting a distressing episode of panic attack or a prolonged stretch of intense anxiety, it is not uncommon to be weighed down by a pervasive sense of weakness or fatigue. If you’ve ever indulged in an intense workout session, this bone-deep exhaustion may seem not too dissimilar. Though, in this context, the depletion of energy isn’t a result of physical endeavor but rather the emotional turmoil sparked by anxiety.

Anxiety acts as a stimulant for your body’s ‘fight or flight’ response, triggering a myriad of biological reactions. This includes a rapid increase in heart rate, surge in adrenaline levels, and tension within muscles – all factors contributing to creating an optimal state of readiness to tackle potential threats. However, in the absence of any real or immediate danger, this exhaustive preparation takes a toll on your body’s energy reserves, leaving you feeling drained.

20) Aches and PainsLiving with perpetual anxiety can often feel as though you’re stuck in an unrelenting state of fight or flight response. This is a state wherein your body is persistently on high alert, conditioned to believe that it’s continually battling or escaping an imminent threat. This seemingly unending “war” within the core of your being is a tumultuous struggle that unfortunately engenders a continuous and often overwhelming surge of troublesome physical symptoms.

Symptoms such as unpredictable aches and pains can mysteriously manifest themselves anywhere within your body. These symptoms are a direct repercussion of the heightened cortisol levels that your body persistently generates in its ceaseless quest to enhance your fight or flight response and the chronically tensed muscles that are constantly primed, braced, and ever ready to protect you from the perceived dangers that your anxiety tricks you into believing are imminent.

How to Manage Symptoms of AnxietyThe 20 signs we’ve discussed in this article show how your body naturally reacts to a built-in defense mechanism known as the fight or flight response. If you try to suppress these symptoms, it might confuse your brain and cause a stronger fight or flight reaction, which can make your symptoms of anxiety even worse. So, the goal isn’t to address each symptom separately. Instead, you should understand that these symptoms occur as a reaction to certain triggers in your environment that set off the fight or flight response. Identifying these triggers is, therefore, the important first step in learning how to manage feelings of anxiety.

The Root Cause of AnxietyWhen we look at the main cause of anxiety, it all comes down to fear. Understanding this helps us make sense of the 20 symptoms of anxiety we’ve talked about. While these symptoms may be upsetting, they’re simply your body’s normal reaction to a perceived threat. This reaction is built into us from our ancestors as a survival tool. It prepares us to either stand up to (‘fight’) the danger or escape from it (‘flight’). So, all the symptoms of anxiety you’re feeling are just your body getting ready to either fight or flee.

If you often feel scared and believe the world is a dangerous place, you’re more likely to experience these symptoms constantly. This intense awareness can result in long-lasting fear, creating anxiety. Tragically, this bodily reaction, which is designed to keep us safe, can turn into a threat when it’s triggered at the wrong time. Being continually in a state of fight-or-flight is hard on the body, causing chronic stress and many physical symptoms of anxiety.

Final ThoughtsTo summarize, these 20 symptoms of anxiety aren’t the actual issue. They are simply signals that highlight the main problem – a consistent state of fear, often unconscious, that tricks your brain and nervous system into thinking you’re perpetually endangered. This fear leads to your brain overstating its reactions and creates distinct physical signs that we perceive as anxiety. Ignoring these signs won’t solve the problem. Instead, learning what they represent and addressing the fear behind them is the first step in learning how to efficiently manage your anxiety. This will be the topic of my next two articles.

In closing, please remember…

“You don’t have to control your thoughts. You just have to stop letting them control you.”

– Dan Millman

Embrace this wisdom and keep in mind, you’re always capable of overcoming your fears and anxiety with the right support, patience, self-compassion, and understanding. By taking control of your emotions instead of them controlling you, you empower yourself to live a happier, healthier life. That is the beginning of Heart Mastery and true emotional wellbeing.
