A phone call from Kingston leads Henry K back to a forgotten corner of his own past — and a blue suitcase sitting inside a storage locker in South Florida.
Inside are decades of recordings — cassette tapes, DATs, rough mixes, and studio sessions from another era.
Among them are unreleased recordings from legendary Jamaican saxophonist Deadly Headley Bennett — a musician who helped shape the sound of reggae but, like many session players of his time, never owned a catalogue of his own.
In this episode of Rootsland, Henry K begins opening those tapes and starting the long process of bringing some of that music back to life — and inviting the Rootsland family to help finish a story that began in the studios of Kingston many years ago.

In Chapter 3 of "Crucifixion of the Ghetto" Hungry Town, a chance encounter at the Studio with a Grammy Nominated Songwriter is just the right ingredient the Bigga Staar project needs to get off the ground. Henry K and Bigga travel into Hungry Town, one of Kingston's garrisons to check rising Rastafarian singer Turbulence about a feature on a song.

In Chapter 2 of "Crucifixion of the Ghetto" dancehall culture takes front stage. To get a hit "You haffe fit" loosely translated from Jamaican patios means to get a hit you have to be fit. During that fist year of recording at Studio K, those lyrics from the 1985 Black Uhuru song "Fit you Haffe Fit" had become a mantra, a catch phrase at the studio to always be alert, aware, attuned to both mentally and physically. Now that Henry K and Bigga Staar are venturing into the world of Dancehall Music, those lyrics are more useful than ever.

The 1990’s were the hey day of music video channel MTV and the shameless cross promotion between the record companies and Movie Studios. The era when a catchy song, stylish video, and charismatic artist could take a song from a hit movie all the way to the top of the pop charts. Hollywood had a formula that that worked, and at the time it didn’t include the brown skin son to Indian immigrants from England...signed to the competition. So the geniuses at the label came up with a solution, it was a half baked idea, but it just might work.

In Redemption Song Chapter 7, Henry returns to Jamaica for the first time since the loss of his close friend Brian, and the loss of his job at Pow Wow. He decides to take the Country Road to West Jamaica. until he reaches the very end...the town of Negril, where everyone belongs. The plan is for some quiet private time to reflect on his, but the funny thing about Negril, nothing goes as planned.

By 1994 Henry K had started to earn his stripes in the business, after spending years as a foot soldier patrolling the streets and lurking the studios of Kingston town. in addition to hustling "Henry K"records out of the trunk of his Neva, he partnered up with friend and producer Delroy "Dr. Marshall" Harrison, Gussie Clarke’s hotshot young engineer to form a dancehall label called "One Up Music." However, Henry's greatest accomplishment was a co-production that occurred outside the studio, and would change his life forever.

In the Season 5 debut, "Brian the Lion," Henry K pays tribute to his friend Brian, the one responsible for encouraging him to move to Kingston. Henry recounts their last conversation in Jamaica, on the roof of their house in Armour Heights. A rare interview on Jamaican TV from February 14th 1993 is unearthed, which gives a great glimpse into Henry when he first arrived in Jamaica.

Deadly Headly was a Sniper. A musical sharpshooter, that was called in when "Sir Coxsonne Dodd "needed a killer in the studio. For just a few English pounds Headly "the hired gun" along with his partner Trombonist Vin Gordon, always brought the heavy artillery...Writing, arranging, and recording timeless hit horn phrases like raindrops from the Jamaican skies. Headly was happy for the work. He loved making music and though he wasn't able to save much, he was able to pay his rent and stock his pantry. Being somewhat naive and very trusting, Headly never realized when he was getting his meager checks, what he was actually giving up. When Henry & Sia visit him in Negril, they find out....

Negril was originally named Xtabi: "The meeting place of the Gods," by the Arawaks one of Jamaica’s native Taino Tribes. Cut off from the rest of the island by wetlands, and tidal marshes with dense waterlogged soil, it was a secluded paradise , where the Arawaks lived in harmony with the land of Wood and Water, a land they inhabited for thousands of years and felt a deep spiritual connection with. Then the foreigners came. Will history repeat itself?

How can it be Forbidden if it's Love? Who is the Black Rose? On the Season 4 premiere of Rootsland, Love is in the air. Join narrator Henry K on a tropical beach in Bull Bay, Jamaica and spend the day with a "Halfpint" humble rastafarian singer, "Miss June" the hard working owner of a local fish hut, and a mysterious girl in a pink tank top with angelic eyes. Dancehall culture and the street dances that inspired it can be traced back the 1950’s to poorest and most marginalized areas in Kingston. Attended by residents who lived on gully banks and sustained themselves by sifting through garbage dumps people so broke couldn't afford to go out on the town, and frankly weren’t invited . or wanted at the party. so they threw their own inner city street dances that became safe spaces within the concrete jungles where underprivileged youth could converge and express their individuality through music fashion art and, dancing free from a judgmental middle class and popular culture that looked down on the ghettos viewed them a depraved underworld on the fringes of society. . Record Companies, music executives, publishers, mangers all looking to cash in on dancehall's recent waive of international popularity, Most were opportunists looking to take advantage of what they perceived as uneducated 3rd world artistes. Yet as greedy and ruthless as these international companies were, they had no idea of what kind of resistance they would encounter when they reached the island’s tropical shores. The Jamaican establishment, the same power hungry consortium that controlled the Islands resources and products for centuries, they also saw in dancehall as a commodity, they could exploit. In the premiere of Season 1: "Catch a Fire" dials things back to 1987 and heads to Washington, D.C., where Henry is a disillusioned justice major at American University. His life changes, however, when he walks into a record shop and eventually secures an internship at RAS Records working for trailblazing reggae producer Dr. Dread, a.k.a Gary Himmelfarb.
