Technology & Choice, and SAFE Crossroads podcasts: Recent Episodes

John Ferguson

Welcome to the Crossroads of Project SAFE, and Technology and Choice podcasts. Safecrossroads covers the technology, applications, ideas and people of SAFE Network, where SAFE stands for Secure Access For Everyone, with the keynote of Privacy, Security and Freedom for all.

Technology and Choice covers almost anything viewed through the lens created by the concepts of technology and choice, taken together.

Your host is John Ferguson, the Simpleton of the Project SAFE, because sometimes it takes a simpleton to ask the right questions. After all, we can't all be geeks.

Visit www.safecrossroads.net and technologyandchoice.com for additional blog posts and articles.

It is a delight to have back two previous guests, Nikita Baksalyar and Lionel Faber, for a wide-ranging conversation that touches on many advances in SAFE Network development. Centering around the recently released Vault program library, we explore the implications of other advances, including new data types, how they relate to each other, safecoin integration, and a lot more.

The concept of the Perpetual Web--private, secure and free--takes on much greater clarity.

Enjoy.

The SAFE Network is a project of such large scope, doing things that have never been done, it can be hard to wrap one's head around the whole thing without a lot of work. But in the end it is for people to use. It needs to be easily adopted and made to work by everyone.

As core development progresses rapidly towards beta launch, tracking the evolution of the user experience (UX) development can help everyone understand the potentialities for this vast project from a practical, people-empowering perspective.

To help us with that we talk to Jim Collinson, a UX Designer at MaidSafe. He walks us through some of the approaches and priorities of UX design in general, and shares insights about the process of evolving UX in parallel to the core team putting final form to the networks basic functionality.

MaidSafe's Crust (Connections in Rust) program library was necessary due to lack of existing tech to do what was needed for the SAFE Network.

The QUIC protocol has evolved and now provides a connection solution which the whole internet will likely be moving to--really great for the internet at large, and really handy for the SAFE Network's development. The SAFE project will be an early adopter, because the protocol already contains the needed functionality to make further development of Crust unnecessary.

We talk about this move, the nature of both Crust and QUIC, and more, with MaidSafe's back-end lead, Spandan Shamar. As usual Spandan is very helpful in breaking this all down for us simple folks, but hopefully being informative to dev types, as well.

We last talked with Jim McCanney back in March 2018 when he had recently been selected as one of five international finalists in the Water Abundance Xprize. In this episode we follow up to find out what happened.

In addition to that we do a good coverage of the technologies he's developed to efficiently extract water from the air and, more importantly, how to power the process with his Wing Generator, his game-changing development in using the wind to generate power for any (and almost all) uses. If you are not familiar with his Wing Generator Project, I guarantee that you have seen nothing quite like this. It's brilliant, and when you get the picture you're certain to agree.

Then the question is, What are we going to do about it?

If you are interested in pursuing one of the approaches we discuss, contact Jim at his website below, or contact your host at simpleton@safecrossroads.net

As the various parts of SAFE Network development come together, facility for mobile access to and use of the network becomes a greater priority. Most individuals now use mobile devices for a large part, if not all, of their internet access.

Our guest is Lionel Faber, a front-end developer with MaidSafe's remote office in Chennai, India.

We talk about mobile development for SAFE in general and the new developer tools for native Android apps in particular. The SAFE Network offers something unique: the opportunity to make truly decentralized apps that interact directly with the network rather than requiring for servers to be maintained.

MaidSafe just released a completely in-house version of the SAFE Browser with some very cutting-edge features and toggles to explore experimental features. It's still rough-cut,as browser experiences go, but it opens the door to some very advanced development options as the SAFE Network matures toward readiness for launch.

Helping us get a feel for this step forward are two of the MaidSafe front-end developers most responsible for this new step: Gabriel Viganotti and Josh Wilson.

Understanding where the SAFE Browser has come from, where it is and where it's going can give one new insight and a real feel for why SAFE Network development is really in a field of its own.

I've been wanting to do an overview of the SAFE Network for some time, as a sort of new introduction, an update on where the project has currently gotten to, and a view of what's ahead.

Dug Campbell from MaidSafe helps me try to accomplish this, because I found it really hard to do by myself! Dug has gained a lot of experience talking about the SAFE Network with a wide variety of different people in varying circumstances. He also, being based there in MaidSafe headquarters, has continual access to the heart of the team.

I hope a broad variety of listeners will find this episode interesting and useful, from those with little tech experience, to developers.

Ayurveda is a practice for maintaining and restoring health with origins dating back 10,000 years. It has been practiced consistently since. Might there be something to learn here? Might it offer choices for health and healing which are not available in the modes and institutions which most of us are used to?

I recently had the privilege of meeting and interviewing a Vaidya (practitioner/doctor) of Ayurveda, Lokesh Rathuri. He presents the basic understandings on which Ayurveda is built, in a way that opens the subject for a beginning understanding. It is a different view than most in the West are used to. You get to decide where there is merit there to warrant further exploration. We also discuss the interface of eastern and western practices and how they can inform each other's understanding and practice.

Our guests on this episode are Josh Wilson and Gabriel Viganotti. Both are front-end developers for MaidSafe, working with Resource Description Framework (RDF) in a number of forms, to enhance the uses of the SAFE Network.

We really get down to what RDF is, how it relates to Linked Data and the Socially Linked Data (SOLID) project, and other use cases that are creating a real revolution in how we manage data, making it both more useful as well as returning control of users' data to users.

Your host learned a lot. Hope you find it useful.

A rather historical event in the United States gives us an interesting opportunity to examine a bunch important dynamics through the lens (or "Looking Glass") of Technology and Choice as a tool.

There may never have been a time, not only in the United States but the rest of the world, when we have been so connected and yet so polarized at the same time. Whether you hold to the old Chinese curse ("May you live in Interesting Times") or not, there is no question that we do live in interesting times.

While a listener may be able to guess the co-hosts' political inclinations, this episode is not about that. It's actually much more about what we all have in common, and how the interplay of technology and choice can help us understand what's happening and effectively use technology to magnify our individual and collective influence.

In this episode we catch up on some of the things that have been going on in SAFE Network development, where it's been and what's coming down the line now, including the roll out of public testing of the automated peer-to-peer connection library, Crust (standing for "Connected" "Rust").

How do you ensure all the nodes of an amorphous P2P network get and stay connected, even past firewalls and routers? How do you do it when most nodes are being run by non-technical people using their spare computer resources? The demands are high. Will Crust be up to the job?

As the creator of something, do you give it life? As a fiction writer, does a story acquire a life of its own? As a software programmer, do you sometimes feel that what you're creating has something to teach you? Is your creation of any sort just something you do and have done, or do you nurture it and query it about what it needs to succeed?

I recently had the pleasure of visiting my old friend, Robert Worstell, on his farm in Missouri, after 20 years of not seeing each other in person, but 15 years of regular communication and collaboration.

This was a very meaningful and useful time for us both, and I hope our conversation conveys some fraction of meaning and usefulness to the listener. We mine a vein of gold here, not just about writing, but about the relationship of anyone with the subject of what he or she is creating. It's a perspective that applies across the board, whether one is a writer, a programmer, a salesperson or carpenter, etc. We hit on something very interesting regarding the intersection of technology and choice which I, personally at least, found quite profound. Enjoy. And consider how the mechanics discussed here might apply to what you do and what you create.

My old friend and sometimes co-host, Robert Worstell, returns and we explore the topic of research, especially from the angle of learning how to write fiction, and writing in general.

Over the years Robert has rolled up his sleeves and plunged into many subject areas to establish for himself what the underlying principles are that allow one to master the subject or action, used what he learned to be effective in the field, and then shared what he learned with others. In the process he has published an impressive volume of books, articles and stories, and learned to make a reasonable living doing so, sharing what he has learned so that others can benefit from what he finds.

In our discussion we also get in pretty close to the essence of what makes the pair of concepts "technology" and "choice" such a powerful tool to examine how to do things.

On Thursday evening, May 24th, 2018, MaidSafe released publically the PARSEC consensus protocol. PARSEC stands for Protocol for Asynchronous, Reliable, Secure and Efficient Consensus. It is being released under very permissive, open-source GPL and MIT licensing for potential use in a wide variety of circumstances by a wide variety of projects quite aside from the SAFE Network.

For the MaidSafe, the release of PARSEC puts the final major research barrier behind it, opening the door for a straightforward path to releasing the SAFE Network. More accurate timelines should now become possible.

Our guest is Pierre Chevalier, a software engineer with MaidSafe, who is one of the authors of the PARSEC protocol whitepaper.

We make an attempt to help listeners who lack a technical background to grasp the meaning and importance of PARSEC, as well as many aspects of the SAFE Network and consensus challenges in related projects. We also try to include enough to appeal to the more technically savvy.

Enjoy.

The Meritocracy Chronicle will be a regularly recurring segment, dedicated to discussing and documenting the evolution of the game SFEOS and the principles of crowd founding. See links below for more details on both SFEOS and Crowd Founding.

The term meritocracy can have a variety of connotations and meaning, depending upon users and context. Here it is used only to indicate that the levers of control and influence within a group or activity are best and most justly yielded by those with "skin in the game," i.e., those who have invested time, energy, heart and effort to the creation and sustenance of the activity.

The advent of cryptocurrencies, crypto tokens, smart contracts, and other such tools offer a lot of possibilities that are worth exploring in terms of creation and maintenance of social activities, groups and economies. Building SFEOS is a project to implement and evolve those tools in an environment that is interesting, engaging and desirable, but where catastrophic events have less catastrophic real-world consequences. In other words, we want SFEOS to be a big, beautiful, inviting sandbox which will, hopefully, grow to be a potentially lucrative economic and social reality.

Having fun, sharing experience and learning are the keynotes.

The Meirtocracy Chronicle is your touchstone on how and where it's all going.

Enjoy!

As promised in the last episode, Chadrick Mahaffey shares his presentation about EOS, the history behind it, the value proposition and why he is bullish on its mass adoption.

This is far from an exhaustive and authoritative treatise. It maybe even leaves one with more questions than answers. But it is a good foothold about the EOS platform as it is developing, and why an enterprise developer such as Chadrick could be excited about the possibilities of what should be enabled by it.

If you haven't listened to episode #31, about SFEOS, don't miss it. It highlights some of the uses to which Chadrick and others are looking to put EOS to work doing.

Chadrick Mahaffey and I introduce you to SFEOS, a project that he originated and is shepherding, that I and others are helping along.

SFEOS is a lot of things at once:

It's a game that is fun, that engages players in adventure and economics and social organization in the game universe.

It's a project that is developed, advanced and governed solely by players with real skin in the game, those who contribute value.

It's a distributed autonomous organization/community with an economic system that acts both in the game and outside the game to incentivize and reward all participants.

It's a tool to painlessly drive adoption of cryptocurrencies and crypto-assets and integrate them into day-to-day experience.

It's a learning tool and testing ground in the realms of crypto asset, social and political organization, economics, etc.

It's all these and more.

Mostly it's designed to be FUN!

Want to play?

Listen in and see what's afoot.

NOTE: There is an explosive Easter Egg of revelation in the body of this episode regarding cryptography. It is likely you haven't heard about it before, so keep hands on your bonnet.

"Alternative Energy" as we've known it has been a disaster for the most part. Everybody wants to "be green," do it right, be efficient, be really smart, but billions in government subsidies have mainly resulted in no progress except to line a lot of pockets and increase central control.

Professor Jim McCanney is an almost unicorn-level oddity amongst scientists: a truly independent scientist who has funded his own research and never signed non-disclosure agreements or other intellectual chains to any government, corporation or other institution. He's gone his own way and applied his genius where he thought it was needed.

Scientists and their institutions either love him or hate him. He's made many discoveries that contradict "main stream" scientists. You'll have to judge for yourself whether he connects with truth or not. Just remember to use objective rather than authoritarian standards in your analysis.

Prof. McCanney's Wing Generator and Water Project is a monumental effort to break the chains of centralized control of power and water, and give choice back to individuals and smaller groups. Real science and independent action are the road. Government subsidies? Not so much.

How about cheap, plentiful power that is available almost anywhere? Can real science do that? Can WE do that? Might Bitcoin miners profit from using this resource? You decide. It's sure worth giving a listen to someone with his track record.

With the SAFE Alpha 2 Network running for some months now, providing a stable, improving interface for developers to interface with and learn to use the SAFE APIs, a lot of development activity is taking place by independant App Developers.

Our guest for this episode is Shane Armstrong, an experienced and successful software engineer who recently discovered the SAFE Network and has jumped right in and started developing and implementing important apps for the network.

We discuss his perspective as an experienced engineer approaching the SAFE development process and the network as a whole, the tools in place to speed developers' interface and exploitation of the network, and why he sees the network's implementation as so important.

The main problems in talking about the SAFE Network are understanding (1) the enormous scope of the project, (2) the various specific innovations it represents, (3) how those innovations interrelate in the overall system, and (4) why the approach is fundamentally different than pretty much anything else that is being attempted.

Regardless of the technical level of the enquirer, Project SAFE has lacked a really good landing place to begin exploration into it.

In this episode we interview the originators and main contributors to the recently released SAFE Network Primer and give some very good insights to what the SAFE Network is about, why it's important and how to more easily approach and understanding of how it is designed.

I start off this episode sharing a bit about why I'm doing this series on festivals in general and the One Love Festival in particular, and why it's important. Part of this is a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of abandoning existing systems and technologies prematurely, in an effort to use new social systems and technologies to improve on or fix existing ones. There's a balance to be struck. Food for thought.

Then I share a delightful interview with Melanie Davenport and her husband, Nick. Melanie and Nick are avid festival goers and share why. They also are vendors at festivals, where Melanie shares her custom clothing creations, Gypsy Spirit Apparel, designed especially for the needs and wants of other enthusiasts. There are specific needs and her adaptation of the technologies she uses is interesting.

We also talk about their introduction to cryptocurrencies and the appeal to this community, and how it can help it evolve in desirable directions.

It was a great pleasure to visit them in their home and get to see Melanie's operation. See the links below to get access to what she's about. Nick, too.

We talk about what he's done, why he changed from being a promoter and producer of hip Hollywood parties attended by the likes of Hugh Hefner and his entourage, and others, to producing a different kind of experience that allows for people to connect on a whole different and more satisfying level.

We also talk about his part in last year's One Love Festival, and how his technical application will be helping transform it even more as it goes forward. Only hints so far about cryptocurrency integration, but that's coming.

Modern technology has enabled us to do so many things that were never possible in history. People move more, farther and faster than ever in history. The internet has allowed us to communicate and form relationships with others from almost anywhere.

But the impulse for in-person connection with others, the forming of personal bonds, is strong and too often unfulfilled.

Festivals of all sorts are exploding in popularity all around the world. These events take many forms, for many reasons. What they hold in common is that they are gatherings of people of common interest, in person, to celebrate community in their preferred forms.

In this episode, we talk with Ken Schwenker, a motion picture producer who has gone on to produce a series of powerful events and festivals to help meet that need for true community reconnection. We talk about the rational and technology for putting on such a festival, what the six-year-running One Love Festival is about, and drop hints about other technological innovations to be forthcoming surrounding this year's festival.

I had some great talks with folks at the Texas Bitcoin Conference in late October.

This episode:

Paul Puey, CEO of Airbitz and the new Edge wallet, on taking the core concepts and success of Airbitz and taking it to a new level of reach and implementation, rebranding as Edge, and making it much more than just a wallet, but a real tool for security.

Julian Smith, Pres. and CEO of Blockfreight, about integrating blockchain tech into the vastly important movement of freight round the world.

Dhruv Bansal, Co-founder and CSO, Unchained Capital, about why "friends don't let friends sell Bitcoin" and the advantages of borrowing rather than selling an appreciating asset.

John Bushe, Pres. and Permaculture Designer for ZeroWaste, about the vast resources squandered in wasteage, the opportunities and benefits of exploiting them, and how blockchain tech is being targeted for integration to improve outcomes.

Ernest Hancock, Editor and Chief of the publishing and activist site Freedoms Phoenix, and host of the broadly popular radio show, Declare Your Independence. Ernie was at the conference to network and share the collaborative project called "Pirates Without Borders."

The SAFE Network is a huge software infrastructure project which is currently in Alpha 2, a network of distributed nodes, hosted on cloud servers for MaidSafe as the many intricacies of the architecture are fine tuned. A future iteration will return to nodes hosted by external participants at home, but Alpha 2 exposes a stable set of interfaces which developers can use learn how the network functions and how to build applications for it.

Today we talk with Gabriel Viganotti of Cordoba, Argentina, who is both an independent developer working on apps to run on the SAFE Network, and also a contractor with MaidSafe, working on front-end development.

In this fourth installment of The Hemp Corner, we set out to better understand the amazing biochemical relationship between the human species and the cannabis plant. To get very far we have to break out some understanding of biochemical interactions in general and how they influence the human experience.

Our guest, Dr. Jim Laurenzano, is a medical doctor who not only has a deep technical knowledge, but his 35 years of striving to engage his patient's understanding and full participation in their own treatment has given him an excellent ability to help others grasp a useful picture of what's going on, in terms they can understand. We use that skill to uncover some fascinating insights into not only cannabis, but the way life works on a biochemical level.

Those who are into cryptographic and networking technology will find some deep, and perhaps useful, parallels.

Governance - the act or activity of looking after and making decisions about something -- Merriam-Webster.com

Those wary of the complexity, inequities and corruption of govern-ment tend to also be wary of the idea of govern-ance. But there's no way around it: Governance (by the above definition) happens one way or the other, because otherwise stuff just happens. Not an optimum scene, for sure.

Arthur Breitman, CT0 and lead developer of Tezos, started thinking about this years ago, and started developing Tezos as a way to account for the inevitable need to adapt the means of decision-making and action within a decentralized cryptocurrency environment.

In this episode we try to take a simpleton's approach to examining Bitcoin and related currencies in a way most anyone can follow, and then examine the factors that need to be managed in any decentralized cryptocurrency system, and start to examine how Tezos deals with these points.

I say "start," because we could only get so far in one hour. There's more to come, but you don't want to miss this one, for sure.

Co-host Michael Bright and I present the third in the Hemp Corner series. Those used to hearing mostly about internet and cryptocurrency tech may wonder why we're exploring such a mundane and seemingly distant subject of agriculture.

As this series goes forward, we will definitely be exploring the direct interfaces between internet tech, cryptocurrency and the agronomy of hemp, but to start, we explore how the nature of hemp works towards a common goal: Decentralization.

Starting from the acquisition and handling of seeds, a whole set of new agricultural, social and industrial options open around hemp, options which are largely unique to this fascinating

This is the second of what we're calling The Hemp Corner of Technology & Choice. After doing a high-altitude overview of hemp and cannabis in the first Hemp Corner, we thought it would be a good idea to work at straightening out all the scrambled thinking about cannabis and hemp that has been brought about by nearly eight decades of prohibition and contradictory propaganda.

To do that we called in the big guns. Joy Beckerman-Maher is a 25 year veteran of laboring for hemp. As we discover in the interview, that's a much more literal statement than it might at first appear.

Joy will (and did) call one down for calling her an "expert" because she has been in the trenches, dealing with the governmental and legal sides of the industry as well as all the production and educational sides. However we decide to label her, SHE KNOWS HER STUFF.

This interview was a blast, and took some turns that caught me by surprise. I think we achieved what we set out to do, though. And we had fun getting there. Hope you do, too.

IN THIS EPISODE

We're very, very jazzed to be introducing a new series within the Technology and Choice podcast, dedicated to the technology and choices of Cannabis, a plant species which encompasses so very much more than just its psychoactive variety, marijuana.

Co-Host Michael Bright of The Hemp Connoisseur Magazine joins John for this periodic series, to assist in exposing the intimate relationship that this plant has had with Mankind for millennia, how that relationship has been broken, and the technical and social aspects of reunification on into the future.

We just get cranking here by doing a whirlwind romp through a small fraction of the plant's uses and benefits in such areas as agriculture, medicine, manufacturing, and oh so much more.

Future episodes will track innumerable aspects of the biology and technology of all things cannabis. It's almost not at all about getting high--not to lessen the importance of that aspect, mind you (we'll definitely go there in due course).

Be prepared for ongoing fascination . . . and an up-swelling of your own enthusiasm, we're betting.

Technology is all about better directing influence, whether it be influence on the environment, the materials at hand, electronics, software, or people. And there is a lot of technology on the nature of influence and persuasion amongst people.

In this episode, we look at how influence is the most fundamental action of life, and why it's a good idea to not be ignorant of the technologies of personal and social influence. After all, who really wants to be a dupe? Answer? Those who remain ignorant of the nature and mechanics of personal influence.

A few days at the Porcupine Freedom Festival in New Hampshire netted a load of wonderful connections, some very interesting insights and a few very relevant interviews, from the perspective of the technology and choice pair.

First up in this episode is Sam Patterson, Chief Operating Officer of OB1, the company developing the Open Bazaar protocol and ecosystem. Sam shares some insights about the ideals of peer-to-peer commerce, shares some very encouraging news about the current real-world successes of the platform, and shares exciting news about the near future, which will make the ecosystem tons better still.

Next we spend some quality time with Larken Rose discussing his very ambitious and fabulously important project, The Mirror. This could be one of the most important projects in existence for opening human potential, so listen up and consider pitching in.

Finally, we speak with Jeremy Kauffman of LBRY (pronounced "library"). With their imminent launch of the LBRY platform, listeners are in a unique position to get in on the ground floor of what I found to be one of the most exciting practical applications of blockchain technology to come along recently. Content distribution is about to get a really great tool that everyone can use, even the "big guys." Listen for how to get an inside track on the launch for listening to this podcast. MAGIC WORDS

David Irvine, Founder and lead developer of MaidSafe has faced a huge workload over the last couple of years, moving the SAFE Network towards launch. So much so that he hasn't recorded an in-depth interview in over two years. That changed today.

In this episode he finally speaks--quite a lot, actually. Our two hour interview covers much of what has been going forward with the SAFE Network, the technical barriers, some of the huge breakthroughs, the community, and a lot more.

Most of the second half of the interview deals with matters relating to a blog post being published at about the same time as this podcast (linked below), making full community disclosure about planned actions to reinforce capital availability to accelerate development and community outreach, a likely source of lively discussion on the SAFE Network Forum.

Aside from all the wonderful data, perspectives and strategy disclosures, the interview is a great dose of David Irvine in person.

Chadrick Mahaffey is a software developer and fan of the SAFE Network. For years he's been working to understand organization principles so as to evolve a way that people can "Labor in Freedom."

In this interview, we go into the background of how he arrived at what he now calls The Crowd Found Hub, a system using smart contracts and crypto tokens to allow for a very open and fruitful way to organize group activities in a completely voluntary way, but with a way of rewarding value created by participants.

Could change a lot of the way we think about how we "have to" do things.

Why does decentralization as a concept motivate so many people so powerfully and often so irrationally? I wrote this article as part of the process of dissecting the anatomy of my own itch regarding decentralization.

Enjoy this recording and visit the written article at http://www.safecrossroads.net/articles/the-decentralization-itch-3/.

Thanks to Adam B. Levine and the Let's Talk Bitcoin network for original encouragement to record this. The track you hear was edited by Adam and was released as part of Episode 233 (https://letstalkbitcoin.com/blog/post/lets-talk-bitcoin-233-recursive-iterations) of the Let's Talk Bitcoin podcast.

Following it the postscript to the written article:

Postscript: I’ve been podcasting and writing about the SAFE Network for a few months now, and the inspiration for this article kept eating away at the back of my brain the whole time, till I finally put it on the page and worked with it till it was done. It was only after I’d finished it up and I was telling a friend about the subject matter that a further revelation hit me: The inspiration driving me (and others, I think) to bring the SAFE Network to fruition is my understanding that the technology underlying the network’s design is built from the inside out with respect for Self granted to the individual user by default. That in itself is an immensely powerful thing. Add to it the fact that the technology promises to be superior in so many other ways in terms of speed, efficiency, scalability and more, and it’s hard to contemplate the effect it will have on humanity. As I say, this is an afterthought to the article, which easily stands on its own. But I take this opportunity to encourage you to explore Project SAFE for yourself. The ramifications of the SAFE Network, and the open source technology it makes available to mankind for other applications, are more significant than I know how to communicate. Visit safecrossroads.net, Maidsafe.net, safenetwork.wiki, SAFE Crossroads Podcast feed on LetsTalkBitcoin and find out what it’s all about. JF

Come one, come all, to the last planned class of the SAFE Network School.

We do a high-level overview of what we know about the SAFE Network in a way that even parents, friends and family of the proud graduates will be warmed with what they learn, and be proud of those who have worked so hard to get closer to the bare metal of this elegant technology.

Graduates will be reminded of all that they have learned by noting the intricate details that have been artfully avoided in this presentation for broad consumption. This is your graduation test, students.

This is not just rah-rah, either. We take up a few important points which didn't get proper attention in the class series proper, but should be of interest to everyone.

grok-- [Martian] literally meaning "to drink" but taken to mean "to understand at a deep, intuitive level." (from the novel Stranger in a Strange Land, by Robert Heinlein, a story about a human raised by Martians)

In this Episode

Having explored the SAFE Network from end to end through our School series so far, in this Class we are finally ready let safecoin help spread our senses out through the SAFE Network as a whole. We can now begin to grok SAFE in fullness.

Now can we embrace some key aspects of the network that we've not yet been able to fully appreciate. We clarify and break down the types of data on the SAFE Network and start of get a grip on what can be done with them. We follow the life cycle of a safecoin and define clearly what a safecoin actually IS.

We revisit part of an earlier interview with Benjamin Bollen, who helps us understand the handling of data types in network as a whole, and what the connection and routing software libraries make available to other distributed network developers.

And finally we hear (indirectly) from David Irvine about the developments discussed in this class and what they let developers start working with, to take the SAFE Network (and other projects it will surely spawn) up to and then beyond what the current internet allows--except decentralized, economical and truly secure from the start. Very stimulating stuff.

We've hacked through lots of details. Now let the big picture settle in.

History in the making. Exaggeration? You be the judge. This last week Daniel DaBek announced the release of the whitepaper on the new Safe Exchange. More than just a protocol, it is the core tool kit necessary to establish a decentralized contract marketplace, via which anyone will be capable of exchanging with anyone, anywhere, according to prearranged contractual conditions.

We discuss the current crowdsale, designed to raise the modest capital needed to finish development, but also to distribute governance of the exchange a much as possible amongst the future users of it.

This is one you really don't want to miss. It will change your vision of how things can be when "Free Trade" is more than just a political buzzword.

Class VII of the School of the SAFE Network takes us to the realm of Self-Authentication, something else new to the world which will first appear with the SAFE Network, but will certainly become a standard for those who wish to have true control over their data and electronic relationships.

Class V of the School of the SAFE Network brings clarity on another component of the SAFE Network configuration which is critical to the autonomous functioning of the network.

We explore some of the problems and solutions of peer-to-peer networking, and explore some of the key terminology necessary to communicating about it.

We really only scratch the surface enough to better understand what the SAFE Network needs to accomplish to operate properly, but the miracles regularly performed all the time in providing us all with the connectivity we've come to expect become more appreciated in view of an understanding of the wild and amorphous Internet environment.

We have a talk with Peter Jankuliak, lead maintainer of the SAFE Network connection library, on topics related to today's class, and progress on the current technical sprint.

In Class IV of the SAFE Network School we get down to bedrock on one of the most important aspects of the SAFE Network. We have loads of fun, actually. It's back to school for sure, but also has a bright gem of entertainment to help bring the lesson home.

With this material we are able to get our feet on solid ground on not only how the network organizes and administers so many intricate actions, but we see the foundations of the very different, but very powerful method of establishing consensus and truth within the SAFE Network.

Please understand that the data dealt with here may lack the full clarity it should if you have not become quite familiar with the material in the previous SAFE Network School Classes. Going over the relevant sections of the SAFE Network Wiki and these podcasts and referenced material more than once is recommended for best comprehension. The technology underlying the SAFE Network contains a number of new innovations/discoveries, all in play at once. Understanding does not yield well to snapshots.

In Class III of the SAFE Network School we break down some of the underlying computer technology needed to get a better grip on why the SAFE Network can do what it is designed to do. We take a closer look at the Vault structure and get an understanding of what a distributed hash table is about, and much more. Find out what David Irvine has to say about how to share understanding the technology of the SAFE Network, from his years of experience telling others about it.

Come along as we start to peel apart the "secrets" of how the SAFE Network is designed and why it is so powerful. There are no secrets, actually. It just takes a little patience, perhaps some repetition. But it's worth it!

Unless you are already quite familiar with the SAFE Network, technically, it is recommended that you listen to the other Classes in this series first. Reading and following along with the SAFE Network Wiki (linked below) is also a great idea.

Class Two of the SAFE Network School takes us deeper. We probe down and start to pull apart the great intricacy of the SAFE Network by closely examining the key elements that make it work. But not too fast or overwhelmingly. You'll be surprised how understandable it is when guided by a Simpleton who has already done most of the brain-warping exploration, so that you don't have to warp YOUR head so much.

Come along as we start to peel apart the "secrets" of how the SAFE Network is designed and why it is so powerful. There are no secrets, actually. It just takes a little patience, perhaps some repetition. But it's worth it!

Since the SAFE Network is being built on a very different combination of fundamentals than has ever been used before and because it is so intricate, it's not possible to just wade in and get a full picture of it without some work. This is especially true because the network is still in development and so can't be used and learned by experience, either.

Your host and others have been expending a lot of effort behind the scenes to improve the documentation and make it more accessible to everyone. That project is very far from satisfactorily complete, but good progress has been made.

I am also aware that there are a lot of people like myself who have the time to listen, but not to sit down and study. Also a lot of people learn best be audio input.

As we go forward, these School podcasts will not stand alone very well. Understanding of later ones will depend on earlier information and insights. But that's okay. It's the only way to go deeper.

I also see this approach making listener participation much more inviting. I look forward to feedback, questions and other input, and will do my best to integrate everything into a great experience for all.

We're happy to announce the opening of the Simpleton's School of the SAFE Network.

Since the SAFE Network is being built on a very different combination of fundamentals than has ever been used before and because it is so intricate, it's not possible to just wade in and get a full picture of it without some work. This is especially true because the network is still in development and so can't be used and learned by experience, either.

Therefore, the effort of this podcast up to this point has been to share and create interest in the SAFE Network, hopefully enough to inspire folks to take the time to dig in and study the subject more closely. That's been a fine approach, as far as it goes. Looking at various functions and news, and exploring the people of the network has been valuable, but after a while it's not enough.

So here is what we are going to do: The SAFE Crossroads Podcast hereby opens its own SAFE Network School. We'll see where all it goes but, to start, the SAFE Network Wiki is a great basic overview of the network, with a lot of detail that will help. The other facility is the Simpleton himself, who is not a geek but has spent many, many hours interfacing data about the network directly, on the SAFE Network community forum, etc., and has accumulated insights which others should find useful.

Your host will be reading the wiki aloud, stopping to comment, cross-reference, look up glossary and other definitions, and generally working through the basics of the SAFE Network making them as accessible as possible. You'll get to see where the Simpleton has outstanding question, too, because I'll be open as we explore this together.

We'll still be doing other types of podcasts as appropriate. But if you see the distinctive SAFE Network School logo, you'll know you're back in class.

So, let's see how this goes!

This week chronicles a mini adventure I had trying to connect with others in the south Texas area who might want to form a meet-up regarding the SAFE Network.

It started with a post on the SAFE Network Community Forum (https://forum.safenetwork.io), on to connecting with and appearing on The Crypto Show(www.thecryptoshow.com), and back to an interview with the Project SAFE member who suggested The Crypto Show connection, Rich Beer. All in all, it was an interesting adventure and I hope you'll enjoy some of the results.

I haven't given up the quest to connect with others in my general area who are interested in and want to know more and perhaps get involved in Project SAFE. Only just started, in fact. The adventure continues!

In March of this year, an unexpected type of post appeared on the SAFE Network community forum.(https://forum.safenetwork.io/t/a-different-perspective/3232). It was from a teacher with a very unique take on what is being undertaken in Project SAFE, and the effect it was having on a lot of students. This is a very refreshing look to the future, and a shining example of a teacher who knows how to make a difference.

We are delighted to present a recap of important aspects of the SAFE Network ecosystem and why they are important, followed by a great interview with Tim Coomber of Scotland, one of the hosts of the LIFE IS PEOPLE videocast on Google Hangouts/Youtube. We explore the subject of how the SAFE Network--through the application N99 (Network 99)--will allow content creators to be compensated by the network itself, whether consumers pay for their content or not! This is a game changer for creative people, especially artist, musicians, writers, gamers, news publishers, and many other types of people who create content that people find valuable.

News

The SAFE Crossroads Podcast is now accepting submissions for intro/outro and bridge music for use on a rotating basis on the podcast. If used, the artist(s) will receive attribution both verbally on the podcast and in all show notes. Additionally, proportional to the use, when music is used on a podcast, the artist will receive a percentage of the LTBcoin distribution awarded by the LTB network for that episode.
