The tragic drowning of a close friend from a refugee background has prompted Annie Gao and Clare McBride Kelly to establish the Refugee & Migrant Swimming Project, in partnership with Royal Life Saving ACT. This project will provide people living in Canberra from a refugee and migrant background to learn to swim and critical water skills.
Refugees trapped in Indonesia, with no work or education rights, live without economic security and have little prospects of finding permanent resettlement in a third country. Operation Not Forgotten is a potential lifeline for refugees subject to Australia's offshore detention regime to resettle and rebuild their lives in Canada under that country's Community Sponsorship Program. Three Canberra women - Sister Jane Keogh, Robyn Fetter and Julie Demicoli - with Operation Not Forgotten, speak about creating a pathway of freedom for people who have been in immigration detention for 9 years and more.
In October 2001, a small fishing boat left Indonesia with over 400 people en route to Australia dreaming of safety, reuniting with family and building a home. Tragically, 353 people died when the SIEV X sank. The background to this horrific event was John Howard's 2001 election during which people seeking asylum were demonised and scapegoated. We commemorate the SIEV X, and honour those who lost their lives and remember their families 20 years on.
After well over three years, the Muruguppan family - Priya, Nades and their two little girls - are out of prison-like immigration detention. But they are still prevented from returning to their home and community in the Queensland town of Biloela as the youngest child is in 'community detention'. Subject ACT covers some interesting fundraising and charity activities going on in and around the Nation’s Capital. In the first part of the program, we are joined by local Photographer Ina Jalil from Ina J Photography to discuss her up and coming fundraising book project called the Tails of Canberra. The Tails of Canberra is a coffee table book showcasing photos of Canberra dogs with the aim to raise funds for dogs in need and the ACT rescue and foster. We take this opportunity to discuss Ina’s work more broadly as a Canberra-based photographer.

In the second part of the program, we are joined by Nick who is an executive member of the Regional Education Support Network (RESN) to discuss how the organisation is addressing education gaps and barriers faced by regional high school students across Australia. RESN provides free tutoring and academic support services to regional high school students. Nick is passionate about his cause having experienced some of the disadvantages of completing his high school studies in the rural town of Grafton in northern New South Wales.

This fascinating area of research brings together archaeology and anthropology to explore prehistoric human remains for evidence of care giving and, by extension, compassion. Dr Lorna Tilley discusses the bioarchaeology of care and what this might tell us about ancient human societies.
More than 200 men are still being held in PNG under Australia's offshore detention regime after almost 7 years. Many are suffering worsening physical and mental health issues as a result of this prolonged indefinite detention. The Greens have come close to taking the second Senate seat for the ACT over the last few election - will 2019 been their year?
SubjectACT's Nathan Gubler spoke with Penny Kyburz, who is running for the Australian Greens here in the ACT, hoping to take a seat in the Senate after the election takes place in May. According to her website, Dr Kyburz is "an academic, innovator, activist, policy adviser, and mother, [spending her] career working as a researcher and lecturer in computer science, a video game developer and entrepreneur, a digital rights campaigner, and now a political adviser."

The upcoming Australian federal election is looking set to be fought on, among other things, tax reform. While the Labor Party want to wind back certain perks for the well-to-do, such as negative gearing and dividend imputation, the Liberals insist these changes will affect the aspirational middle-class and pensioners, in the case of the latter. Meanwhile, a lot of the electorate are left bedazzled by the complications of the debate, left wondering what policy change will effect whom.
SubjectACT's Nathan Gubler spoke with John Passant, Canberra correspondent at Independent Australia and former Assistant Commissioner of Taxation at the Australian Tax Office. John Passant has written on tax for years, and explains how these mechanisms work and why Labor are arguing for a winding back of them. We then explore whether a campaign based on these reforms represents a rejuvenated Left ready to dismantle rampant neoliberalism, or if is a case of Labor wanting to rock the boat.

This is an interview with Pastor Ken Perrin and his wife Chris from the Ainslie Church of Christ. They have created a social hub where people can come to find friendship and support in the heart of Canberra.
Paul Dumetz is a talented and awarded ceramic artist and teacher with Canberra Potters Society based at the Watson Art Centre in Canberra. Paul is very active in the Canberra community supporting people who have a disability and engaging them in creative activities. Paul also identifies himself as a person with with Asperger's syndrome and encourages people to focus on their abilities. This recording was made live in Paul's ceramic workshop at Watson Arts Centre, so the background noise adds to the authenticity. We hope you enjoy hearing this inspiring young man speak.
Tonight on the eve of ANZAC Day 2018 we have an Interview with Daniel Boney from the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra discussing the Frontier Wars campaign to remember the conflicts between Europeans and Aboriginal people since 1788.
This week Catherine and Ismail interview a group of young Refugee Activists who were recently arrested for a sit-in protest at the Immigration Office in Braddon, ACT. They were protesting over the ill treatment of asylum seekers in both the offshore detention centres Manus Island and Nauru.
In this segment, SubjectACT looks at the ACT Government's recently released climate change strategy and their attempts to get the public's views on it. Is it a genuine attempt?
In a public lecture, Dr Sophie Lewis provides some insights into a burgeoning area of interest within climate research, the field of climate attribution. This area assesses to what degree humans have influenced, and contributed to (through the emission of greenhouse gases), particular climate events. After this, Sophie goes on to discuss how heatwaves, both their prevalence and intensity, may change in the future as the climate warms.
On the 29th of March this year, ACTU Secretary Sally McManus gave an address at the National Press Club, outlining the aims and purpose of the Change The Rules campaign. Citing rising inequality, flatlining wage growth and an insecure workforce, McManus called for a collective effort by unions and workers to demand better bargaining powers, an increase to the minimum wage, amongst other things. Included in McManus's speech was for workers to join their union.
To coincide with May Day, SubjectACT's Nathan Gubler spoke with Alex White, Secretary of UnionsACT, about Change The Rules, and the 12 Days of Action organised by the trade union movement at the time of broadcast. Some of the topics touched on include the prevalence of insecure work in Australia, encouraging workers to join a union and how the union movement plans to take their message to parliament.

When the Australian Capital Territory was given self-government in 1988, the hunt for a flag to symbolise the nation's capital was on. The ACT Government went with a design by Ivo Ostyn; but, as you'll hear, the final result was not quite what he had in mind. Rather than embracing Ostyn's proposal of a simple floral design, it was insisted that the finished product include the ACT Coat of Arms. What results is a flag not just with the wrong heraldry, but a flag that forgoes striking simplicity in favour of an overly complex design.
Ivo Ostyn has been campaigning ever since to have the original vision of the ACT flag instated as the official flag. SubjectACT's Nathan Gubler spoke with him about what makes a good flag, the original and proposed design, as well as what needs to be done to get the flag changed. They also briefly touch on the issue around a new Australian flag, and that the ACT has no official mammal symbol.

But despite consecutive Census data showing Australia is becoming more secular and atheist, Easter and Christmas remain widely celebrated, albeit in less Christian and more secular ways. You may have heard of it, but you just as likely have not. It's the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or the TPP, a highly secretive free trade deal between 11 pacific nations - including Australia - which may see massive ramifications in the efficacy of our laws to regulate the ambitions of global corporations. As for the economic benefits, they have not been convincing to the likes of Pat Ranald, convenor of the Australian Fair Trade and Investment Network, who have been raising the alarm bells about the TPP for nearly a decade.

A decade ago, a book called Affluenza by the Australia Institute's Clive Hamilton and Richard Denniss sent shockwaves through the cultural landscape, with an analysis of Australian culture rarely talked about at the time. It described a vast proportion of Australians who, while earning well than enough to live on, finding themselves feeling poor and unhappy. Instead of trying to increase our leisure time and thereby earn less than we might, we opt instead to earn more so we can buy more things. This was due to an emphasis on owning products of status and state-of-the-art technology bringing about a fulfilling life, rather than the old-fashioned values of creativity and family, to name a few.
Richard Denniss is back a decade later to tackle the plague of affluenza in Australian culture, and the diagnosis isn't good. He believes we not only recognise ours as a consumerist culture, but embrace it, believing we are propelling the economy to unprecedented heights of growth. Our propensity to replace rather than repair, to throw away perfectly good gear to keep up with the times, and generally embrace the purchase of goods over services, not only damages public life but also trashes the environment. But rather than lay the blame at the feet of immoral individuals, Denniss believes serious cultural shifts need to occur if we are to increase leisure time, improve our environmental impact and end the anxious need to buy more stuff.

The migration of many different peoples from many different cultures is a fundamental aspect of modern Australian history. And while mainstream conversations around migrants, refugees and the migration experience usually revolve around whether or not they should be allowed to live in Australia, what's often left out mixed feelings of belonging to multiple places, nostalgia for distant lands and memories evoked by food, song and language.
It is these strange, ineffable feelings that are the concern of be:longing, "an online publication exploring personal experiences of migration, cross-culture, nostalgia and divided (or shared) belonging". SubjectACT's Nathan Gubler spoke with Dunja Cvjetićanin, co-founder of be:longing, and Anita Patel, who is Acquisitions Editor as well as a key contributor, about the website and the work they collect. They also talk about their own experiences of mediating between different cultural spheres.

Recently a music benefit called Rockin' For West Papua was held at Smith's Alternative in the city, raising awareness and showing solidarity for the independence struggle in West Papua, a province west of Papua New Guinea and currently occupied by Indonesia. West Papua has experienced similar repressive actions as seen in Catalonia recently (but in many ways more extreme), but receives far less press and attention particularly considering it is one of Australia's closest neighbours.
To explain the history and current situation of West Papua and its struggle for independence from Indonesia, SubjectACT's Nathan Gubler spoke with Ronny Kareni, co-founder of Rize Of The Morning Star and currently living in Canberra. They discuss how West Papuan nationhood was hijacked during the decolonisation process and the repressive Suharto regime, as well as the economic motives of Indonesian occupation and the level of repression faced by pro-independence activists. They also discuss Black Brothers, the legendary West Papuan rock band whose politics saw them exiled and moved about all over the world.

Tim The Yowie Man is a big name around Canberra, known for his work in cryptonaturalism and following the trail of urban myths and legends scattered around Australia.
With the help of Austography, Tim The Yowie Man has put together a new series, which will be on YouTube soon after its premiere at the National Film and Sound Archive on the 18th of October. SubjectACT's Nathan Gubler sat down with him to discuss what's in store in the series, including investigations into the mysteries of Lake George, the haunted tales of Burnima Homestead... and discovering the South Coast's best pies.
The discussion extends into Tim's initial yowie sighting which kickstarted his investigations, his theory on what a yowie might be and the stark divisions in the yowie/bigfoot hunting community.

2017 has marked several milestones in the advancement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders' rights in Australia: it has been 50 years since the 1967 Referendum and 25 years since the Mabo decision was handed down by the High Court. It is also 20 years since the Bringing Them Home report, which brought the dark history of the Stolen Generations to light, and nearly 10 years since the Federal Government apologised to said Stolen Generations.
Another important moment occurred with regards to the latter two, that is the case of Bruce Trevorrow vs the State of South Australia. This case saw Trevorrow - an Aboriginal man who was unlawfully taken by the state as a 13 month old child in 1957 - financially compensated, as well as have the crimes committed against him acknowledged by the courts. This was the first time a Stolen Generations victim was compensated by any means, and was a crucial turning point in the conversation around the Stolen Generations and partially catalysed the Apology half a year later.
To talk about this important legal case, SubjectACT's Nathan Gubler spoke with Joanna Richardson, who was Bruce Trevorrow's solicitor in the case. The interview touches on who Bruce Trevorrow was, what happened to him, what lasting damage was done, as well as how Trevorrow's case was built. We also touch on how important the trial's verdict was, what the Apology to the Stolen Generations meant to Trevorrow and the Uluru Statement's proposal of a Truth and Reconciliation process.

Human rights such as freedom of speech and religion are often invoked by many Australians and even many politicians, but did you know Australia is the only democracy without a federal Bill or Charter of Rights?
To discuss this issue, SubjectACT's Nathan Gubler sat down with Tim Vines, Vice President of Civil Liberties Australia, and Sam Tierney, a Board member of CLA and an ACT solicitor. Tim talks about how a Bill or Charter would function to ensure human rights are better protected in law on a federal level, while Sam talks about how the ACT's own Human Rights Act 2004 has been used to protect human rights in the territory.

Natalie Cooper is co-chair of Equal Voices, a cross-denominational Christian group advocating for LGBTI rights within the church. Included in our conversation is the EV's Apology to LGBTI+ people, current support for LGBTI rights in different denominations and what kind of points we might make to our Christian friends to change conservative perceptions of what homosexuality is.

SubjectACT's Nathan Gubler investigates the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey and the campaign for marriage equality with two different guests with two different perspectives.
Todd Schild is a supporter of marriage equality and LGBTI rights, yet will be boycotting the Postal Survey on the grounds of his fundamental objection to the courting of public opinion on human rights issues.
Kevin Boreham, ANU College of Law lecturer who specialises in human rights law, will be voting 'yes' (despite similarly objecting to the Postal Survey) as he believes a boycott would be ineffective. Included in our discussion is the use of human rights language to back the 'no' case despite the absence of a federal bill or charter of rights, how having no charter will effect the challenge of the survey in the High Court, the chances of the High Court challenges succeeding, and how Australia's protections against hate speech compare to other parts of the world.

You may have seen recently, advertising posters at bus shelters with photos of a young person in a t-shirt that says “Job Hunter Not Dole Bludger”.
While this campaign was launched by the national welfare group Brotherhood of St Laurence, our research into this story led us to a perhaps surprising driving force behind it, in the form of the bus shelter advertising company, Adshel.
Curious to find out more about the motivations behind the campaign, SubjectACT's Jennifer Thompson spoke with Adshel’s Director of People & Performance, Franck Appleby. We also hear from the young job hunters themselves.

SubjectACT presenter Doug Dobing talks with St Edmunds' College student John-Paul Romano and his father, well-known Canberra solicitor Peter Romano about John-Paul's controversial suspension, his passion as an advocate and his future.
In the first part of the program, we talk about the events that led up to John-Paul's indefinite suspension for apparently having a 'dangerous' attitude. He said he just wanted to give the students an opportunity to start a conversation about changes at the College.
But there's more to John-Paul, as school is a small part of his life. Later in the program, we discover more about John-Paul.
Despite being 17 years old, he is an already an active volunteer and leader in the Canberra community, involved in several resident group committees and has a passion for being an advocate.

"I must say the pain of leaving the birthplace is still here with me, and you know, one doesn't make the decision to leave everything behind, which is true because I couldn't take anything with me," said Lieut.Colonel Xuyen Pho.

Executive Producer Becca Posterino talks to Michael Costigan about the valuable contribution of the Tara Costigan Foundation, in support of survivors of domestic and family violence in the ACT and Australia.
In February 2015, Tara Costigan was breastfeeding her newborn baby when her former partner burst into her home and brutally killed her baby, while her sister stood by helpless.
Tara's devastating death sparked a profound grief for her family and friends and horrified many Australians. Tara's uncle, Michael Costigan, felt compelled to act and helped establish the Tara Costigan Foundation. Tara's legacy lives on in this foundation as it remains committed to raise awareness and provide support for survivors of domestic and family violence in the ACT and Australia.
The Australian Institute of Criminology statistics reveal that one woman a week is killed as a result of domestic and family violence. Disturbingly this figure cannot account for deaths indirectly linked to domestic and family violence.
Recently, Becca Posterino spoke to various members of the Tara Costigan Foundation (TCF) including TCF CEO Michael Costigan to recognise the launch of 'Tara's Angels' - professional health workers who will provide wholistic support for domestic and family violence survivors and their families.
Becca also speaks to a survivor of domestic and family violence and reveals how the vital work she does, promotes awareness in the ACT community.

Executive Producer Becca Posterino speaks to Dr Lorana Bartels, Associate Professor School of Law & Justice at the University of Canberra, Dr. Ruth Armstrong, British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellow, St. John's College Research Associate at the University of Cambridge and Dr Amy Ludlow, College Fellow and Lecturer in Law at Gonville and Caius College at the University of Cambridge.
Recently Drs Armstrong and Ludlow visited Australia and SubjectACT was invited by Dr Lorana Bartels to discuss this pioneering project in the UK. The UK project is informing Dr Lorana Bartel’s academic research in the ACT and Australia more broadly.
As mentioned on the University of Canberra website, Drs Armstrong and Ludlow designed, deliver and are evaluating an initiative called Learning Together. Learning Together brings together students in prisons and universities to study university-level courses with each other, in the prison environment. The program has spread rapidly in the UK and will be running in approximately 20 prisons by January 2017.
Their approach contests the rituals of stigmatisation, a normative and punitive approach to rehabilitation by offering a new approach including rituals for redemption. Furthermore Dr Lorana Bartels will lead a similar collaborative learning project with Queensland University of Technology law students to commence in 2017.

Dr Anthony Hopkins is a Senior Lecturer at the Australian National University, College of Law and is also a defence barrister. He explores compassionate justice and its potential to positively impact the prison experience.
Anthony was a criminal defence lawyer in Alice Springs at the Central Australian Aboriginal Legal Aid Service. There he experienced first hand the challenges of a punitive approach, particularly the effects on Indigenous Australians.
Anthony also has a continuing vipassana meditation practice and integrates his research into this form of meditation to inform his academic endeavours.

Greens candidate for Murrumbidgee and former MLA Caroline La Couteur, sheds light on the cost of the light rail revealing a very contrasting figure to that quoted by Liberal candidate Brooke Curtin.
While light rail continues to dominate the election campaign, Brooke Curtin, candidate for Kurrajong, also identifies rate increases as an underlying issue the Liberal party intend on setting straight.
Minor party candidate for Sustainable Party Australia Martin Tye, clarifies his party's vision of economic, social and environmental sustainability. The light rail in his party's view does not necessarily represent the best economic option for the ACT community.

The ACT election presents an opportunity to ACT Community Council Presidents who represent their communities and share insights on issues and opportunities.
I spoke to President of the Gungahlin Community Council; Peter Elford to discover Gungahlin locals positively view development in their area. However improved roads, access to local public schools and surrounding suburbs remain a priority.
Similarly, President of the Woden Valley Community Council, Martin Miller expressed the need for urban rejuvenation including upgrades to the bus interchange. With the closure of the Woden Basketball Courts, there is also an absence of an indoors-sporting venue and there is widespread community interest for an arts precinct in the Woden Valley.
The ACT election results will indefinately influence how government reponds to these issues. People within the ACT have the opportunity to express the concerns of their communities directly to electoral candidates and potentially determine community outcomes.

Dr Barbara Speers is the Co-Director of the Citizenship and Wellbeing Research Group of the Centre from Research in Education at the University of South Australia and has completed a PhD in girls bullying behaviours.
Barbara's research makes a clear distinction between conflict and bullying and acknoweldges the importance of recognising and addressing bullying behaviours in the community and education context.
Bullying in her view, commonly emanates from a need for power and can be active and passive making it a complex issue to confront.
