Better agricultural and food systems lead to healthier people and healthier ecosystems

Rome, 30 May 2012- FAO launched its new policy document prepared for the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development, next 20-22 June in Brazil. The report “Towards the future we want: end hunger and make the transition to sustainable agricultural and food systems” sheds the light on the fact that hunger reduction and sustainable development are deeply linked, for such reason, better governance of agriculture and food systems is key to achieving both targets. Access to Natural resources, such as land, water and forests, is essential to produce food.

The agricultural sector has potential for opportunities to save, and even generate, energy.

FAO recently launched an Energy-smart Food for People and Climate paper, Making the case for Energy-Smart Food at FAO. The Energy-Smart Food Programme aims to help countries promote energy-smart agri-food systems by identifying, planning and implementing appropriate energy, food security and climate-smart strategies to boost agricultural growth and rural development.

Roma, 11 de mayo de 2012 – Una rueda de prensa tuvo lugar en la sede central de la FAO para la aprobación final de Directrices voluntarias sobre la gobernanza responsable de la tenencia de la tierra, la pesca y los bosques en el contexto de la seguridad alimentaria nacional, durante la 38a reunión especial del Comité de Seguridad Alimentaria Mundial (CSA).

Las Directrices voluntarias proponen principios y estándares aceptados internacionalmente para las prácticas responsables. Proporcionan un marco para que los Gobiernos puedan usarlo cuando desarrollen sus propias estrategias, políticas, legislación y programas. 11 May 2012, Rome – A press conference was held at FAO headquarters for final endorsement of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security, during the 38th Special Session of CFS. Voluntary Guidelines set out principles and internationally accepted standards for responsible practices. They provide a framework that Governments can use when developing their own strategies, policies, legislation and programmes. The guidelines aim at promoting food security and sustainable development by ensuring secure access to land, fisheries and forests to vulnerable populations.

The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives, to raise public awareness of the invaluable contributions of cooperatives to socio-economic development, particularly their impact on poverty reduction, employment generation and social integration.

Jack Wilkinson is a Canadian farmer and the Director of Nipissing-Sudbury Cooperative in Canada. He, recently, visited FAO in Rome in his capacity as a member of the IYC advisory committee (at UN level). His experience is inspiring for many other farmers around the globe.
