The idea of rest sounds wonderful, but in reality, rest is a radical, countercultural act of resistance to the powers and principalities of a world at war with God and his kingdom of peace. To practice Sabbath is to draw a line in the sand against all external (and internal) forces that would encroach upon your apprenticeship to Jesus and formation into his image.

Bert Alcorn, Mark Avery, and Ryan Hinkle recently returned from an amazing trip to Nepal. The main reason for the trip was to celebrate the graduations of 46 pastors and leaders who just finished a 2-year Pastoral Training Certificate Program through Touch Nepal, but it was also a great time for the guys to see some of our local leaders who we partner within Nepal, and to visit some of the significant religious sites for Hindus and Buddhists.

In this episode, we’ll explore the profound and provoking call from Jesus that changes our whole lives.
What if following Jesus was more than just showing up at church occasionally? What did Jesus mean when we he said “come, follow me?”
In this episode we explore the call from Jesus then, and now.
What’s our problem with Christians? First of all, Jesus didn’t call for Christians, but disciples.
But, if you were to walk into a room full of 100 Christians and say the word “discipleship” and you might get 100 different definitions or explanations of what that word means.
In this episode we explore what is and isn’t a Christians, and what Jesus was actually talking about when he said “come and follow me.”
What would it look like to not just survive, but the thrive? Not just endure, but mature? In the midst of hardship, trouble, setbacks, disappointment, or in the language of the Bible ‘various trials’, how can we not just make it through, but flourish?

Jesus is our joy because He is our treasure and greatest good. There is a unique type of joy to which God’s people are called. It’s more than a happy mood, but rather a choice to trust that God will fulfill his promises.

What we believe about the future shapes how we live in the here and now. The resurrection is a core doctrine and historical event, and without it, Christianity loses any sense of power, truth, eternality or substance, it unifies, motivates sexual purity, empowers us to love and gives us hope for victory over death.

At the core of the Gospel is Jesus dying for sins, being buried and raised on the third day. In those key moments in history lies the power of God for salvation. Our whole eternity is dependent on the atoning work of Jesus and his victory over sin and death. We need this message and Paul makes sure that no Corinthian proceeds without this critical reminder of God’s grace through Jesus.
The primary purpose of manifestations of the Spirit is to build up the body, the potential exists for us to use the gifts for our own benefit and that ends up bringing confusion into the mix. How we serve in the gathering (in church) should be guided by the principle of what is helpful to whoever might be in the room (outsiders are present).

What is prophecy? How do we use prophecy? Are there rules, guides, or instructions from Scripture? Tom Logue, the Lead Pastor of Restore Temecula, unpacks this gift and how it's useful for the building up of the church.
We believe God is a generous God, so, we act and give generously, even when it stretches us.
When we gather, we all have something to contribute - but that contribute should always build up the church and be in pursuit of love for God, one another, and the outside world.
Love is the prevailing lens for the church community to exist in. The status of Spiritual people (those animated by the spirit) is authenticated and marked by love. Grace-gifts are temporal and Love extends into eternity, thus must control all our actions and thoughts.

Paul has just finished multiple sections on the ways that the church can “destroy” the temple of God and now he is talking about how the members can begin to build up the body of Christ by the power of the Spirit.

The church body in Corinth has misunderstood the purpose, value, and blessing of the Lord’s Supper and in abusing it are creating a Gospel issue as it relates to the understanding of Jesus’ sacrifice.

Don’t do things that will make your brother or sister stumble, rather in everything we do, live and worship in a way that builds them up and glorifies God.

In humility, we make day to day, moment to moment decisions to honor God as we go through life. Paul offers himself as a picture of one seeking to live a faithful life.

To be an apprentice of Jesus means to order your life around three goals: Be with Jesus, become like Jesus, and do what he did. Our predestined purpose is to be conformed into the image of Jesus, that process takes participation and intentionality. How can we grow to become more like Jesus through prayer?

Undivided devotion to the Lord should guide decisions about whether to remain single or to marry, but other factors, which point to the value of remaining unmarried, should all be considered.
What defines you as a believer is not your family, your job, etc. but your identity in Christ.
All relationships are complicated, we need Jesus at the center of all of them to find the joy, contentment and hope that the Gospel brings. Whatever your situation, work hard to put Jesus at the center and “Glorify God with your body.”
The Gospel is powerful to work in any broken person and in all forms of brokenness. -1 Corinthians 6:9-11, 8; Romans 8:11

As followers of Jesus, we don’t live in a bubble, but we do have a different ecosystem… our lives are shaped by a new kingdom and the world does not know how to properly engage that, so there are things that we need to deal with “in house”.

Someone claiming to be a follower of Jesus, yet living in unrepentant sin is not only unacceptable, but it damages the entire church. The remedy to sin in the body is to defend holiness and purity in our individual lives and in those in the church, and in grace, walk with those in sin, as a family, toward reconciliation.

Christ crucified is the crux of the foolish Gospel. Your faith is not in the wisdom of men, first and foremost your faith needs to placed in Jesus or it will crumble.

Paul opens his letter - that all of life's most complex problems can be seen through the lens of the gospel - to the new Christians in Corinth, by first greeting them and affirming his identity in Christ, and theirs.
We are going to start the year together as a church with a season of prayer and fasting as we believe and seek the Lord for breakthrough in our lives, in our church, and in our city. We believe in the power of prayer and we believe if anything of significance is going to happen, it is going to be birthed in prayer. There are three levels to our contending: Our lives, our church, and our city.

The description of Yahweh as slow to anger reveals both his patience/compassion AND his genuine anger/wrath towards the wicked.

As a church, we responded to the tragedies of this past week with lament.
A lament is an implicit act of faith in which the community of faith turns to God as its only source of hope and comfort.
The biblical psalms feature several remarkable expressions of lament. In these laments, the worshiping community expresses grief and frustration at the brokenness of the world.
Biblical laments are a witness to God’s desire for honesty in worship. No experience in life is too difficult to be brought before God.
Throughout Scripture, we see a common pattern of lament. Laments:
- Are Address to God
- Involve an affliction, complaint, and recognition that all is not right in the world
- Contain a request for God to do something about the injustice
4 End with confidence and praise
There is an active spiritual battle, with "gods" and they are real, at work, but Yahweh us above them all.

God presents himself to Moses by telling him his name… This is a huge moment and it is going to help shape our understanding of who God is.

Sacrificial worship is an act of spiritual warfare, as we declare Jesus is King and no one or nothing else is.

The garden of Gethsemane is a key moment for us to see Jesus as “sent” for a purpose and simultaneously that he is a man who struggles with the weight of obedience. When we struggle with the weight of obedience we should look at the garden and see the importance of Jesus’ battle with obedience.
Jesus institutes the idea of remembrance into the church, what does it mean for us to remember his finished work as we continue on as the “body of Christ”
It’s not about how much we can give to Jesus. This is about recognizing all that Jesus has done, and either (1) worshipping an living in response (the woman) or (2) rejecting him (the religious leaders and Judas).

Jesus is preparing his disciples for his absence and ultimately posing the question: Did we hear the words of Jesus and obey them? Jesus gave us specific instructions about how we should be living in this season. He wants us to be awake, alert, ready, faithful, obedient, and diligent. It is a good and acceptable challenge for us to be all the more diligent when we hear passages like this that teach us to press into faithfulness while we wait for Jesus.
God chose to reveal the good news of Jesus’ birth to lowly outcasts, demonstrating his pursuit and grace for all! Our response is to rejoice because we have been pursued, we have been shown grace, in Jesus we have life and salvation and we are brought into God’ redemptive plan for all creation, and that’s the best possible news.

Devotion to Jesus is an essential facet to our faith, and a truly counter-cultural life.

As he and his disciples begin their ascent to Jerusalem, Jesus mercifully heals two blind men in Jericho.
There is no life with God apart from his grace. He generously gives and serves his people. When we begrudge others or angle for a privileged place, we step outside of the grace that God has offered. Humility and service are the way forward.
For those in this world that have much, the cost of following Jesus is high as the invitation is to release our hold on the things of this world as we give our lives to him.
What if marriage wasn’t meant for your happiness but for God’s glory? Our marriage and singleness demonstrates the heart of God and the gospel. In a world filled with fractured relationships, selfish motives and happiness theology, God desires for his people to reflect a different way. As Jesus prepares for his journey to the cross, both he and the disciples are reminded of his true identity as the Son of God.
Jesus reveals the nature of his messiahship. He is a suffering Messiah, and those who are his disciples must suffer with him. God has a plan to reach this world through Jesus, if we are to follow him, there must be a change of allegiance and regular commitment to lay aside our will, and live the will of God under King Jesus. Jesus invites you to follow him like he invited his disciples, deny yourself lay down your will every day and pledge allegiance to Jesus, in doing so you will find life. It here where we start to understand how to live the gospel of the kingdom now.

Who is God? What has he done? Who am I? How then shall I live? These questions start in the most critical place for us to grab ahold of… Who is God? What we discover in this passage, is that what we believe about God dramatically impacts how we relate to him and how we live in this world. Each of us needs to be reminded of the truth of who God is in our journey of preaching the Gospel to ourselves. Peter proclaims it here and it’s on the truth of that proclamation that Jesus declares he will build his church. Our mission, as God’s people, is fueled by this fundamental question: who is Jesus to us?

Jesus wants deeper satisfaction for us than earth provisions but will use them to direct people to himself.

The Kingdom is the greatest treasure a person can ever experience. When somebody understands the Kingdom of God, it becomes the most valuable thing that they know of. It changes your value system, changes your purpose, changes your relationships, changes your goals. Nothing is left unaltered when you realize the true value of the Kingdom of God.
At the heart of this parable, and Jesus’ explanation of it, is a note of patience - not just the patience of those workers waiting and watching, but of God himself. Jesus is teaching his disciples and us to be patient and know that God is aware, watching, waiting and determining. The kingdom in the meantime is growing and permeating the earth through the making of disciples, prayer, ministry and the power of the Spirit.
God is a pursuing God, and through the life, death, resurrection, and victory of Jesus, is pursuing you and I!

In a turning point in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus changes his teaching tone from an “all call” to a more specific, and at times cryptic, invitation into the kingdom of God. Jesus gives the parable of the sower and soils, exposing himself as a “reckless,” but gracious sower, calling us to receive the power of the gospel and respond by making ourselves good soil.

Relationship with Jesus takes priority over every other relationship, even the relationship with one’s family. Jesus’ disciples are his true family, and in him, we are part of this new Kingdom family of God that is being formed. Through Jesus our deepest needs are met and our future in this present age finds footing as we learn from Jesus how to live now. Come into discipleship to Jesus and rest in his finished work, come to Jesus and learn from him, and let your soul find deep satisfaction and peace.
An encounter with Jesus demands a response. Jesus reserved the harshest critiques and condemnations for the people that knew him, his message, miracles and ministry best, and still rejected him.
There will be times that we build up a picture of Jesus in our minds and we have to readily and regularly reset our own thoughts to align with the actual Messiah.

Jesus tells his disciples on mission that we don’t have to fear because we are valuable to God.

Today, we want to pause take time to reflect and pray for refugees in and outside our country who are experiencing great fear. We know that throughout scripture, God invites his people to care for the immigrant, the alien and the sojourners, and we want to continue to that tradition. While that problem may seem far from the steps of Ventura, we must remember three vital things:
- That praying is the most crucial and powerful thing we can do to fight the powers of darkness and evil and aligning our hearts to God's.
- We all came from somewhere else, and we all know what it feels like to be in hostile and unfamiliar territory.
- This is an issue at our very doorsteps. There people all around us in Southern California dealing with the realities of this weeks events.
We're reminded of Moses' mother, from our bible reading plan, who, out of desperation, sent her son up the river to give him at a chance at life, when staying at home would mean certain death. We're also reminded of Jesus, Mary and Joseph fleeing to Egypt to escape Herod and infanticide in their homeland. The story of refugees fleeing violence in their homeland is engrained in our story, narrative, heritage and our faith. It was part of the journey of our savior Jesus Christ.
Jesus, we pray today that you would be present with refugees and immigrants. You know what's it's like to migrate, leave everything, and cross a border. Jesus, teach us what it means to be a church in this season. Teach us how to resist fear and trust in your power, sovereignty and care. And teach us what it means to respond in hospitality, compassion and love.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
As Jesus is preparing and sending his disciples out, he reassures them and promises that in the midst of persecution and opposition, God will be with them, equipping them and sustaining them. Jesus says the way we can exchange our problems with mission for his promises for mission is to be with him, become like him and do the things he did.

As people are seeing and experiencing the power and authority of Jesus, they are left with two options: reject him or embrace him.

The disciples that followed John the Baptist were noticing that Jesus’ disciples weren’t fasting once or twice a week like the other religious people did, and they ask him why. As Jesus answers their question, he uses three metaphors. These three metaphors leave us with the question: why do we still fast today?

Matthew is one that saw the power and the value of the Kingdom of God and left everything to follow Jesus immediately.
The unexpectedness of Jesus’ mission now begins to elicit opposition. People do not like to have their worldview rattled or value systems challenged. As Jesus calls unexpected and unappreciated types of people to follow him, he encounters resistance from the religious establishment.

Jesus has authority over everything on earth. The authority of Jesus produces either faith or fear as we dwell on the reality of all that God has done through Jesus Christ.

The Son Of Man is an ambiguous, mysterious and weighty title Jesus uses for himself over 80 times throughout the Gospels.
The life of following Jesus is a compelling one that demands a high cost and immediacy that challenges our modern sensibilities.

Jesus has the authority as king to tell his disciples and the crowds how to live in his kingdom, and he says the first step is to see that Jesus himself is the only true foundation on which to build our lives.

Jesus is the way the truth and the life, and those that enter through Jesus will produce fruit which finds its basis in repentance. The invitation from scripture is the be with Jesus, be like Jesus and do what he did. The invitation is to saturate yourself and delight yourself in him and be transformed. The invitation is to encounter Jesus and be changed.

The problem with prayer and our prayer lives is that we have not yet been convinced of God’s goodness. When we believe that God hears us, God answers us, and God is good, we tap into the richness, power, and beauty of a vibrant prayer life than changes reality.

Enter the book of Matthew: the Jewish people are a very different people than where we left them in Nehemiah, and everything Jesus taught and did must be understood in this context. By this point, Israel wanted political, social and military victory. They were concerned with being their own kingdom, not God’s. So when Jesus comes on the scene talking about the kingdom of God, this is timely and inflammatory language.

God's generosity, as well as His call for us to be generous, is meant to protect us from falling prey to the cares and the pleasures of this world.

Through the story of God’s people in Nehemiah, we learn that our foundation and motivation for worship is the finished work of Christ securing our identity in him and the more we are saturated in the story of God, the greater our capacity and desire is to worship God with our lives.

As the people of God are reminded of the story of God it leads them to recommit to the obligations of the covenant, which includes observance of the law, giving, worship, commitment to a holy identity, Sabbath observance, and contribution to the priests/temple. As we understand the story of God and who we are in Christ, it compels us to live a life reflecting the goodness and grace of God.

As we explore God’s story, it shows us how broken we are and how merciful and gracious God is, and leads us to repentance.

As Ezra read from the law, the Hebrews are faced with their restored identity and place in the story of God, and respond with an eagerness to learn the scriptures, repent of sin, celebrate God’s grace and live differently.
Nehemiah 8:1-18
As the people of God take shape into his community, there are structures and systems that are put in place to carry out the purposes of God.
With the internal struggles and oppression among the Hebrews dealt with, Nehemiah’s attention is turned, once again, to the completion of the wall. The wall is almost done, but there was a final effort from external enemies to oppose the work in the city of Jerusalem, by harming, intimidating and discrediting Nehemiah. Nehemiah’s singular focus on God’s mission, in the face of opposition, shows us how to resist distraction, temptation, and disobedience to God’s call on our life, for his mission.

The people of Israel cried out because of the oppression from within the people of God. Nobles and officials were exacting crushing interest and bankrupting their brothers and sisters, forcing them to go into slavery. Nehemiah roots out the sin of the people, calls them to repentance and strive for holiness, and shows them how to live in their restored identity as God’s people.

God’s heart for the brokenness of this world involves a call to his people to respond in obedience and faithfulness.

Thriving in exile, Nehemiah garners the favor of the kind and goes to Jerusalem to rally and cast vision to God’s people to restore the wall of the city. As he casts vision, he encounters opposition and encouragement, but ultimately as we go into the areas God has called us, God gives us our identity, strength, power and foundation. God promises to send a savior to redeem his people and restore creation. Thus, God’s solution to all of the woes and problems of the world come through Jesus.
