In my early days of learning Personal Finance, I have always relied on others to grow my money.
This is why I fell for scams, bought expensive but inadequate insurance, locked myself into a 15-year savings plan with risk of losing my money if I stop my contributions, discovered my advisor's dishonesty, and purchased a property without stable employment.
Unfortunately, just like me in 2015, marami pa rin akong nakakausap who are not fully in control of their finances.
They rely on their relatives, spouse, friend, financial advisor, real estate agents, and other professionals to make financial decisions and manage their money.

Seigmond “Mang Emong” Abad started his journey as an Overseas Filipino back in 2014. His extensive background in banking and never-give-up attitude helped him succeed as a Financial Advisor from the day he started working.
We both met in 2018. We teamed up as advisors and started our project called Empowered Expats - a series of vlogs that focused on personal finance and personal development. In 2019, together with some of our friends, we co-founded a creative design company to serve as another stream of income. Everything was going well for him during that time as he started his transition to filmmaking. He won prestigious competitions, became a Nikon brand ambassador, got interviewed by ABS CBN for his work and became a 2019 The Filipino Times Filmmaker of the Year finalist.
But when the pandemic came, everything went south. He went behind on his car payments, unable to pay the rent and even got his phone line cut for not having any money to pay for it. What’s worse was he couldn’t send any money back home to support his daughter at the height of the pandemic!
Today, he's one of the most sought after filmmakers in the UAE, working with top fashion designers like Michael Cinco and Splash, the largest fashion retailer in the Middle East!
In this episode, he shared how he overcame the thought of quitting, how his obsession to his craft as a filmmaker opened up other opportunities for him, and why we should never give up on our dreams no matter what struggle we might face.

Yung iba naman takot mag invest kaya save, save, save lang sa buong buhay nila!

Last December of 2021, a post I made about a scampany went a bit viral. Before the rest of the world knew it was a scam, I was mocked and shamed by people I didn’t know and those who i thought were my friends!
Natakot din ako para sa safety ko, but I knew that part of being an advocate of Financial LIteracy is to combat investment scams para wala na silang maloko pa. I’m just blessed to have the people who supported me during that tough season.
Kaya sa episode na to kasama natin ang isang fellow Yaman Coach who had experienced a tougher challenge than me when he exposed a certain Ponzi Scheme in the past.

Let’s all face it!
Retailers are smart. They know your weaknesses and how to capitalize on them.
So every time you go shopping — online or IRL — you're being taunted by infinite reasons to buy more, more, more.
Consumer experience these days is not simply designed; it's engineered.
Research determines the ads you see, the scents and sounds you encounter in stores, even the way a salesperson might casually touch your arm.
But how do we know that we’re buying from someone who has our best interest or if this retailer is doing its best to make you go beyond your budget?
Kaya sa episode na ‘to we’ll be joined by an Ms. Valerie Peramide-Fischer.
She is...

Direk Guddy Hernandez started his career for 20+ years in ABS CBN as a dubber. Sya yung isa sa mga boses ng mga paboritong cartoon characters nating mga batang 90’s! Pero bago marating ang buhay na meron sya ngayon, lumaki muna sa hirap si Direk Guddy. He was born in Marinduque and at a young age, he already knew the value of hard work and how he can make money without having any capital. Kaya nung bata pa lang sya ay marami na syang mga raket at isa na dun ang pagbubunot ng sahig ng kanyang mga kapitbahay kung saan he was paid for only 25-50 cents per job! Nagpursige pa rin sa buhay si Direk Guddy until he became the News Program Director for ABS CBN. Pero kahit naging maganda na ang kinikita nya bilang direktor eh nalubog pa rin sya sa utang at kung anu-anu pang financial problems! In this interview he shared with me how he overcame his debts, how he made more money during the pandemic selling dried fish, and why poverty should never be a hindrance for a person to not succeed in life. What you’ll learn from this episode: - Diskarte sa buhay - The importance of having that burning desire - How to prioritize savings - How to be a long-term investor thru mutual funds - Why choosing the right partner is vital to your financial success

Na-experience mo na ba na habang nag scroll ka ng social media feed mo eh may nag appear na ad bout an item na matagal mo nang gustong makuha or iregalo sa mahal mo.
After clicking the ad, napansin mo na ang mahal pala nung item na yun and hindi mo na ma-afford kasi sira na budget mo this month because of the holiday season!
But wait, there’s more!
Merong banner sa baba that says, Buy Now, Pay Later with 4 easy interest-free payments!
Napaisip ka bigla…. instead na 1000 dirhams, 250 na lang! siguro kaya ko na tong bilhin ngayon.
Wait lang! Wag kang kikilos ng masama!
Isipin mo muna..
Is it OK to buy the item now and pay for it later?
Are Buy Now Pay Later companies actually “helping” you get the things you want—right now.
Or do they actually “help” you go into debt for a lifestyle you can’t really afford.
Yan ang ating tatalakayin ngayon as we discuss this increasingly popular payment scheme called Buy Now, Pay Later AKA BNPL.
In this episode you’ll learn:
What Buy Now Pay Later is
What you can buy with BNPL
How BNPL works
How BNPL companies make money
Advantages of BNPL

Earlier this year, a digital artwork was sold for 69M USD!
A .gif of a flying cat sold for lots and lots of money!
Popular memes being purchased from left and right!
Just today, I saw a Lebron James dunk being auctioned for 500k USD!
Indeed, nonfungible tokens also known as NFT’s have become a sensation this 2021!
With sales volumes that surged to $10.7 billion in the third quarter of this year, there’s really no question that NFT’s can be the next biggest thing!
So… are NFTs much bigger than art and other digital collectibles?
Is it the New Frontier?
Or is it all just hype?!
To discuss more about this NFT craze I have invited Arlan Vicencio:

May nag ask na gumawa ako ng list of money lessons sa pinaka sikat na Netflix series ngayon, Squid Game. Currently meron ng 111 million fans since its premiere on September 17! It is a series that revolves around a contest where 456 players in deep financial debt put their lives at risk to play a series of children's games for the chance to win a ₩45.6 billion prize or 1.9B PHP! I personally believe that Squid Game is the kind of series everyone should watch to remind them to not take their finances for granted. Kung wa-epek ang mga motivational movies then I think eto ang pinaka aalog sa mga taong kailangang ayusin ang kanilang way of managing their finances. That being said, I have listed a couple of life and money lessons from the most popular series in Netflix today! SPOILERS AHEAD!

Mae Mendoza was an Overseas Filipino in Dubai for 12 years!
She’s been married for the last decade and is now the mom of Noah, her 2-year-old boy.
Straight out of college, she immediately went to the UAE and worked as a Cabin Crew in the Emirates, the most prestigious airline in the world.
Like many Overseas Filipinos, she got buried in debt at a very young age but after she got herself out of it, she dedicated her time learning more about personal finance.
To help fellow Kababayans avoid the same fate, she Co-Founded Investhusiasts Social Club, a nonprofit organization that conducted unbiased financial seminars for Filipinos in the UAE.
Her entrepreneurial journey began when she Co-Founded Crewssentials, a Flight Attendant Planner, and HealthyBucket, an online wellness store in the Philippines.
In addition to getting out of debt, she mentioned TONS of Wisdom Bombs that many Overseas Filipinos should learn from!

In most cases, it's not recommended to buy life insurance for children. Kasi ang main purpose ng Life Insurance is to cover the loss of income if the bread winner dies.
Pero ano ba ang pros and cons of having a life insurance for your young child?
Let’s talk about it in this episode!

Bro Ion has been a Blogger and Overseas Filipino in the UAE for the past 15 years.
He became famous for his Boy Dubai blog, but little do most people know is that he probably is whom I consider as the “unluckiest” Overseas Filipino I know when it comes to finding the right employer in his first 3 years as an OF.
He experienced being locked in a room by his very first employer!
Also, experienced delayed salaries for up to 3 months, until he went to the Ministry of Labor twice and won an off-court settlement with his non-paying employers.
Not only that, he also did 10 exasperating visa change exits before eventually finding better employment.
But what I like about him is his perspective on how he views his struggles in life.
Now working as a digital transformation consultant at Accenture Middle East, he definitely has gone a long way by God's grace and of how he puts meaning not just in his circumstances, but also in his finances.

Kahit negative ang ating budget, dapat pasitib pa rin tayo sa buhay.
Wag lang sa COVID.
There are tons of studies claiming that optimism is good for a person’s financial health.
The positive perspective is associated with healthier financial habits, and therefore, better financial results.
Pero..
How do we really define Optimism?
Is it a result of being financially sound or is it the other way around?

On the surface, marriage might seem to be all about love and companionship. On a deeper level, it’s much more than an emotional commitment—it’s also a financial one.
In the US, marriage statistics show that lack of compatibility in the financial arena causes almost 41% of divorce.
If a couple is not on the same page about how the finances are going to be handled, it can lead to terrible problems.
So in this special episode I brought in a married couple na I really admire.
Jeric is a Laguna native who started his Overseas Filipino life in Dubai in 2011. He also serves as the Feast Builder of Feast St. Mary's Dubai, a prayer gathering of the Catholic Lay community, Light of Jesus Family and the caring husband to Apple.
Apple is an Ilongga by blood, raised in Dubai since 1989, and in the Catholic Lay community life with her family through Couples For Christ since the early 90s and the loving wife of Jeric.
Together they are the loving parents of Joseph & Zelie and the host of Langga Speaks Podcast!

If you want to upgrade your life, you need to upgrade your way of thinking, and one of the best ways to do that is by reading.
When I added reading as part of my daily activities 4 years ago, my life changed for the better!
And as I was preparing for this episode, I encountered 2 different studies.
In 2017, National Book Development Board (NBDB) mentioned that 43% of Filipino adults read to gain new knowledge.
However in 2018, the Philippines had the lowest reading comprehension among 79 countries based on a global survey done by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). The most popular genres for adult respondents are: the Bible, romance novels, short stories, picture books for children, and almanacs or encyclopedias.
It seems like as a general population, we don't seem to be very interested in reading about personal finance and probably that’s one of the reasons why only 25% of us are financially literate.
Kaya sa episode na to, our special guest will help us get ready to read!

Will you trust a robot or an AI to handle your finances?
Why not?
For the past couple of months, I have been investing in a robo advisor because of its simplicity, ease of use and most importantly - low management fees!
With their growing popularity, a question begs to be answered: are robo advisors better than the traditional human financial advisors that we are so used to?
To help me find the answer, I have invited Michele Ferrario, the CEO & Co-Founder of StashAway.
In January of this year, Stashaway became the first digital wealth manager in Southeast Asia to manage more than $1 billion, and early this week, they have raised US$25mil in Series D funding led by Sequoia Capital India.
This goes to show how promising the company is and the entire Robo-Advisory industry in general.
Prior to SA Michele was the former CEO of Zalora Group and the co-founder of Rocket Internet in Italy and Pakistan. He worked as Investment Manager at Synergo and as Engagement Manager at McKinsey. He earned his MBA at Columbia Business School and his Bachelor of Science in Finance at Bocconi University in Italy.

Let me tell you something.
Financial Literacy is not enough to improve our finances.
Yes, you heard (or read) it right!
Alam mo ba na there is no empirical evidence that financial education improves our financial behavior. In fact, studies show that the effect is a miniscule 0.1%!
Kaya in this episode, we’ll be joined by Ms. Rose Fres Fausto AKA FQ Mom.
She was an investment banker turned full-time homemaker and now a writer and speaker on money and family using Behavioral Economics principles. She graduated with honors with a degree in A.B. Economics from the Ateneo de Manila University, pursued Behavioral Economics in consultation with the Father of Behavioral Economics and Nobel Laureate Richard Thaler and Dan Ariely of Duke University. She completed an Executive Course on Behavioral Economics at the Harvard Business School.
She’ll tell us some basic information about Behavioral Finance and why Financial Education alone is not enough to get better at our finances.

Filipinos love free stuff, even in getting financial advice.
But is free advice really for free?
If not, then how much does free advice cost?
Also, why would you pay for a piece of financial advice if you can watch YouTube videos and a lot of Financial Advisors offer it for free?
Here’s the thing….
Consumers need to understand that Financial Advisers who offer free advice are intermediaries and are not doing charity. They are are compensated by financial companies via commissions. If they are giving "advice", they get something out of the products sold. It is still fine if the product sold is suitable, but sometimes, it is not.
There lies the catch. There is always that angle of conflict of interest that one needs to be aware of. You really don’t know whether what they are selling to you is really good for you or good for them as a commission-generating sale.
On the other hand…
There are those who are fee-only advisers or “fiduciaries” who are legally obliged to act in your best interest. They usually charge a flat salary or fee or receive a cut (1 percent is typical) of the assets under management. Because of the compensation structure, these advisers are seen as having fewer conflicts of interest than commission-based advisers.
Fee-only advisers are rare in the Philippines, and I know that there are still a lot of commission-based advisers who truly have the heart to help their clients.
So in this somewhat controversial topic in the Financial Services Industry, I have invited Mr. Aya Laraya. He instantly became one of my FinLit heroes when I first watched his Pesos and Sense program.
He’s been involved in different financial industries in the Philippines since 1989. He is a Certified Securities Representative, a Registered Financial Planner, a Certified Investment Company Representative, a Realtor, a writer with an MBA from University of Western Australia and the Founder of Ronin TVM App, a mobile app for financial advisers to efficiently engage clients and prospects.
In this episode we’ll tackle the REAL cost of free advice, what you need to be careful of when getting a free advice, how to find the right adviser, and more!

Financial Ignorance is expensive.
Please allow me to expound.
Did you know that if you invest $1,000 monthly for 30 years and make an 8% average annual return from your sensible stock portfolio, minus 1% per year for all investing costs, you’ll end up with $1,227,000?
But paying just 1% extra in costs will lose you $218,000 of that! Unfortunately, most plans available will charge you a lot more.
So if you want to make the most of your investment, you must keep those fees as low as possible.
I’m so thrilled by my next guest as I consider him as a celebrity when it comes to Expat Investing here in the UAE!
Steve Cronin has advised the top management of banks, asset managers, and sovereign wealth funds all over the world, including princes and prime ministers for over the past 17 years.
He is a Board Member of SimplyFI.org, a Debt Panel contributor for the popular newspaper, The National, and a Corporate Wellness expert.
In 2016 he set up a small blog about saving called DeadSimpleSaving.com, primarily for expats.
Whether you’re an expat or not, I’m telling you to NOT MISS THIS SPECIAL EPISODE WITH STEVE!!

Some feel lofty and risky.

When considering whether or not to make a jump, there tend to be more convincing reasons to stop taking the risk. After all, the justified mind wouldn't trade the security and stability of the present moment for an unpredictable and rocky future.
In this episode, my next guest will help us uncover the the rationality of taking the leap, discuss the proper mindset needed to make a successful jump and a list of check lists before finally making your first or next leap of faith.

BUSINESS OWNERS & ASPIRING BUSINESS OWNERS LISTEN UP!
One of the seven habits of highly effective people, as Stephen Covey said, is to begin with the end in mind. As successful entrepreneurs, we also have to think about the exit plan from the very beginning if when the time comes that we need to sell our business.
But how?!
Many business owners fall into the trap of overvaluating their business and most decide to sell their business when it’s already too late, usually, when they’re already facing losses and close to bankruptcy!
Don’t worry because my next guest is Michelle Seiler Tucker, Founder and CEO of Seiler Tucker Incorporated. As a 20-year veteran in the M&A (Mergers & Acquisitions) industry, she is regarded as the leading authority on buying, selling, fixing, and growing businesses. Her and her firm have sold over a thousand businesses in almost every vertical and have a remarkable track record of success.
She’s been featured in INC, Forbes, Entrepreneur Magazine, USA Magazine, Fox Business News and CNBC. She’s an international keynote speaker and has spoken alongside many prominent speakers like Eric Trump, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kathy Ireland, Donna Karen, Stedman Graham, Randi Zuckerberg, Steve Wozniak, and more. She’s also the Best-Selling Author of the book “Sell Your Business for more than It’s Worth” and has a new book called “Exit Rich®.”
In this episode we’ll talk about building a sustainable, scalable, and sellable business utilizing her proven techniques outlined in her newest book Exit Rich®.

Good news! You can change your current behaviors entirely and become the person you always wanted to be!
We are not inherently "good" or "bad" with money. However, over time, we have built good and bad habits around our finances, and this is what generally makes the difference between someone who manages money well and someone who doesn't.
Rather than beating yourself up for your shortcomings, you can simply focus on building better money habits.

One reason many people don’t become entrepreneurs is that they just don’t know where to begin.
What we often forget is that the most successful entrepreneurs in the world all started the same way! They didn’t know what the first step was or what they had to do, but they all managed to take it and become the amazing success stories they are today.

Many expats face huge financial crises when they get slapped by a lawsuit! Ignorance of the law excuses no one, and these costly mistakes can be prevented only if we are equipped with the proper information. There are some who don’t even know their rights as an expat.

Creating content is a necessary skill if you want to stay relevant these days, and with the increasing number of people consuming audio content, podcasting can be a good platform to send your message across.
This episode does not mainly talk about money (well, touched on monetization a little bit). Darbs is a leader when it comes to content creation while Nicholo is an expert in terms of strategic social media marketing.
Here we talked about our idea of what a meaningful content is, self worth, how we started, how to not give a f----, adding value, knowing which content to start with and even the perspective of an agency when the time comes that you're ready to monetize!
This is a FULL-PACKED episode that new or seasoned content creators can still learn from.

Humans are more emotional than rational.
We buy things not only because we think we need it but because we FEEL the need to buy it! We buy mainly on our emotions and justify with logic.

Can Overseas Filipinos invest while working abroad? Definitely yes!
However, our chosen investment vehicles require the right strategies in order for us to achieve the desirable results.
Pablo Santos Jr is part of KD Agriventure, a Dragon Fruit farm in the Philippines that he co-founded while he works in one of the top companies here in the UAE.
Can you really buy happiness? Experts say that you can…well, to a certain extent and amount.
In my younger years, I was one of those dudes who bought stuff just to fill that void until I got caught up in the endless pursuit of acquiring things just to feel happy.
During my time as a sneaker head, Antonio Aguirre Jr. was definitely the person who everyone admired in the sneaker scene. Known as Mr. Sole Slam, he revitalized the sneaker culture in the Philippines when he launched Sole Slam Manila in 2011!
In addition to being the CEO of Sole Slam Inc., he's also a creative consultant for many companies/brands like Smart, SMB, Vans, Reebok, URCC, Marlboro and FILA to name a few of them.
He’ll talk about why more money will not make you happy but instead use it as a tool to make other people happy.
A research shows that genetics accounts for one-third of financial behavior, however, the researchers found that upbringing is an important factor in the investment behavior of young people but that its effect is replaced over time by the accumulated life experiences of the individual.
In our next Finance Fridays, I will be joined by Ben Lebig Jr, an accomplished Global Finance Professional with more than 19 years Finance and related experience on various industries.
Being an OFW for more than a decade already has taught him so many lessons about life and money. In his experience helping a lot of Filipinos in the UAE, he will tell us what really accounts to an OFW’s spending habits.
Certain things just don’t mix well like red wine and vodka. The same goes for your finances.
Business owners intertwine business and personal finances all too often. After all, you are your business, but blending up the two will mean a mess at tax time.
Fitz Villafuerte is the man behind the popular financial blog, Ready To Be Rich. It started in 2007 which aims to help Filipinos achieve financial independence and live life in their own terms. When I started my journey, his blog was where I usually turn to for better understanding of the stock market, mutual funds and other investment vehicles in the Philippines.
Maintaining clear lines between your business and personal expenses doesn’t need to be challenging. In our next episode, Fitz will clarify the similarities and differences of handling personal and business finance. He'll also share his experience being the Owner of 199jobs and as the Director of Wealth Arki.
The Philippines has experienced two major Financial Crises before this COVID Pandemic happened - ’97 Asian Financial Crisis and ’08 Global Financial Crisis, and in every adversity, we Filipinos have shown resiliency.
In our next episode, we’ll have a quick throwback with Coach Efren Llamas Cruz. He is a mentor not just to me but to a lot of Financial Planners as well. He is a registered financial planner of RFP Philippines, seasoned investment adviser, bestselling author of personal finance books in the Philippines, and Chairman of Personal Finance Advisers.
His 30 plus years experience in the financial industry makes him the best "tour guide" for this trip down memory lane. He will share with us his first-hand experience during the last two crises and how this pandemic is different from them.
The '97 AFC, '08 GFC and the COVID-19 crises can last for some years or so, but there’s one crisis that can last for generations if not properly planned for - our Personal Financial Crisis.
"Find your passion" is probably the most popular advice that you will hear from many successful and influential individuals of our modern time. It is defined as a feeling of intense enthusiasm towards something.
Our next guest is someone you're probably familiar with. He's a good friend and I would consider as the epitome of execution! Darbie Kim, AKA Real Talk Darbs, showed the courage to continue his passion for vlogging just recently. He resigned from his well-paying job during the lockdown to become a full-time vlogger!!
Why and how did he find the determination to pursue the unknown even at the time of crisis? With all the interesting things that we want to do, how can we know that one thing is worth pursuing? More importantly, how can we sustain living a life we are passionate about?
Na-experience mo na bang maubos ang savings mo nung nagkaron kayo ng emergency sa Pinas?
In this pilot episode of Finance Fridays, I will be joined by Rienzie Bionela, a seasoned Registered Financial Planner with more than a decade of experience in helping families plan for their future!
We'll discuss how an Overseas Filipino can avoid financial troubles when his or her loved one back home falls sick.
