Temptation is tricky. It presents itself as being overwhelming; as if we can’t help but sin. But this is not reality. God always provides a way to move beyond it: it’s called worship.

If there is one spiritual discipline I wish I had understood and embraced earlier in my faith, it would be praying Scripture.

This verse should have its number retired and entered into the Hall of Fame our out of context verses. We’ve made this a “go to” verse for inviting people to “invite Jesus to come into your heart.” The problem is, it’s not about that at all.

“For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” ??Romans? ?15:4? ?ESV??
Too often we forget that when the New Testament was written, its writers didn’t consider it the inspired Word of God. For them, the Hebrew Scriptures (what we call the Old Testament) was the only authoritative Word.
And it was in those Scriptures that they found the encouragement and hope they needed.

“If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you today, by loving the LORD your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules, then you shall live and multiply, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it.” ??Deuteronomy? ?30:16? ?ESV??
This verse and others like it always provokes two thoughts from me: first, is life really this simple? And second, why do bad things happen to good people.

When pulled out of context, this verse feels like a proverb - a short, catchy saying designed to invoke meditation on a principle of wisdom.

This very famous Psalm is often read and prayed through during times of spiritual attack. But what if we received this as a promise to be lived by every day?

Is this a promise of prosperity? Should we look for opportunities to seed into the spiritual realm in order to be blessed financially?

Have you ever thought about how a candle changes everything in a dark room? It’s impossible to escape its influence. This is how our lives are to be.

The Bible is so much more concerned with us living out what we say, rather than saying we believe the right things.

What are you willing to give up in order to prosper? In the ancient world, people were willing to give up nearly everything in order to have financial wealth, children, long-life.

I think when we’re honest, we are half-hearted more often than we would like to be. Especially when it comes to prayer.

Simple doesn’t always mean easy. This verse is simple. But carrying it out is much more difficult to do than it is to understand.

There’s a reason we’ve all heard the cliche: “Talk is cheap.” Integrity resides where our actions and our words match. And for the Christian, this starts with a reverence for God.

Strength, love, and masculinity aren’t often used together. They should be.
