Justin

Welcome to The Studio.

What is a Studio? It means different things for different folks. For some, it is a creative space. For others, it is where production and mixing happen. For others still, it is a place to talk and chat and share ideas. The Studio is many things; but most of all, it is a place where YOU are welcome. Here, will cover topics that run the spectrum from Writing Studies to video games; from the cosmic to the mundane.

My name is Justin Cary. Thank you for joining me. Shall we go in?

Sometimes, a video game comes along that feels like it transcends the rules that most video games follow. Need to onboard your player? Pop up windows with one to two sentence descriptions of what buttons to press. Exposition needed? Maybe an NPC can deliver that, or a note found left on a nearby table. What about all those map markers? Video games spend a lot of time, usually in the first hour, teaching you how to play the game; what the controls are, how to track things or craft things or upgrade things; all the things. This type of onboarding can be useful and is often necessary to bring new audiences and players into that game world. Sometimes, a game takes a little bit of a different approach.

I knew from the first few moments of Sifu that this was one of those games. My gaming Spidey-sense can immediately tell me what kind of game I am getting into based simply on the HUD, or heads up display. This is all the visual information the game presents to you on the screen at any given time. Think mini-map and inventory quick access. Health Bar. Compass. Objective markers to follow. Some games have very busy HUDs. Others do not. From the moment Sifu begins, you are presented only with the stunning and beautifully crafted world around you. The camera sits close to the character you control; almost touching his shoulder. You hear the sound of rain all around you, the night sky glowing above and the you take your first Hud-less steps into the world of Sifu. Right away, this game tells the player what this experience is going to be like; a seamless, engaging kung-Fu action story that relies heavily on player skill and very little on pop ups, HUDs and the game ‘telling you how to do stuff’. If you have ever played Breath of the Wild, you know what I’m talking about. That game offers very little in terms of on screen display stuff, tutorial pop ups and direction; in a good way.

“The shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality, for no one can become conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort. To become conscious of it involves recognizing the dark aspects of the personality as present and real. This act is the essential condition for any kind of self-knowledge.”

The pace of life in the 21st Century has created “infostorms” that overwhelm our senses. Is believing in some of the sensationalist things we see actually quite a rational response?

It’s commonplace to say that we’re all deluged by more information than we can possibly handle. Less commonplace is the acknowledgement that human judgements also rely upon secondary information that doesn’t come from any external source – and that offers one of the most powerful tools we possess for dealing with the deluge itself. This source is social information. Or, in other words: what we think other people are thinking.

Writing is like water. It be as placid and calm as still, pre-dawn lake or as raging as a roiling ocean. It can be hard enough to stand on and gentle enough to bring life to a new sapling. It can give life. It is needed. It is malleable and flexible and all around us and a source of great power and great mystery. Indeed; if writing is all of these things, then why do writers, academics, teachers, researchers and so many others continue to force writing to be only one thing? To me, this seems like looking at water and saying it can only exist in a plastic bottle; shaped and shipped and packaged and produced to serve one singular goal. Water is not that. And neither is writing.

Why it’s time to stop worrying about the decline of the English language

It's time to challenge the notion that there is only one way to speak English

Language is complicated. The way humans communicate using that language is even more complicated. And it is in this complexity that the beauty and the infinite depth of human communication is revealed. It is also in this complexity that systems arise and are built which cater to certain ways of speaking and harm others. Turning to the field of writing studies, a very White academic voice is valued above most others. Think about the last time you were given a bad grade on a piece of writing because it had grammatical errors, or it didn’t ‘sound’ academic enough? What does this mean? What is ‘academic writing’ and how did this standard become the norm? As writers, what might we do to challenge these systems that privilege certain kinds of writing over others?

Assignment: Describe and Blow Up Your Writing Process

Please use the text entry box below to tell me how you write.  Talk to me about how you have been taught how to write up to this point; what was high school like?  What did your teacher tell you about 'the writing process' and how do you go about composing essays for school now?

Next, I want you to blow this shit up.  Reimagine your writing process; take the guardrails off and imagine what writing could be like for you in a perfect world.  How would you do it?  What would it look like?  If there were no grades, no teachers, no BS holding you back; what would you do with your words and how would you do it?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Critical Reflection Critical reflection is a writer’s ability to articulate what s/he is thinking and why. For example, to explain the choices made in a composition, to contextualize a composition, to address revisions made in response to reader feedback, etc.

By the end of FYW, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate reflecting on their writing in various rhetorical situations;
  • Use writing as a means for reflection;
  • Demonstrate their rhetorical awareness, their writing process, and their knowledge of conventions with regard to their own writing;
  • Illustrate that reflection is a necessary part of learning, thinking and communicating.
