Human life holds a unique place in creation because it gives us the capacity for self-awareness, moral choice, spiritual discipline, and direct realization of the Divine. We carry instinctual forces within us, yet we also have the ability to refine the mind, awaken the heart, and consciously participate in the evolution of the soul.

This episode reflects on the rare opportunity of human incarnation, the responsibility that comes with spiritual practice, and how Kriya Yoga helps us make use of this life for awakening, liberation, and a deeper relationship with Spirit.

Drawing from his own sincere inquiry, Pushya brings forward questions that many practitioners quietly carry—about technique, imagination, intuition, realization, lineage, and the long arc of spiritual maturation. Ryan responds with clarity shaped by a couple decades of practice, teaching, and personal experience, offering insight that is both grounded and reflective.

Topics explored in this episode include:

  • The role of imagination and contemplation in meditation and higher states of awareness
  • How and when to work skillfully with subtle inner experiences without falling into fantasy
  • What enlightenment and liberation actually mean within the Kriya Yoga and Yoga Sutra framework
  • The difference between momentary spiritual glimpses and stable realization
  • The importance of lineage, fidelity to practice, and embodied understanding
  • The most challenging and most rewarding aspects of a lifelong spiritual journey

In this episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast, we explore a question many meditators quietly wrestle with: Why does life sometimes feel less interesting as meditation deepens?

As spiritual practice grows, interests, motivations, and relationships can begin to shift. Activities that once felt exciting may lose their pull, while inner life becomes richer and more compelling. Is this a healthy sign of spiritual development—or could it be a form of withdrawal from life?

This conversation examines how to recognize the difference between genuine spiritual maturation and subtle avoidance. We discuss how meditation naturally reshapes priorities, why it’s normal to outgrow certain habits or environments, and how to remain engaged with family, work, and creativity while still honoring a deeper inner calling.

The episode also touches on the role of self-reflection, the importance of psychological healing alongside meditation, and how a balanced spiritual path allows both inner realization and meaningful participation in everyday life.

If you’ve ever wondered whether losing interest in the noise of the world means something is wrong—or whether it might signal a deeper transformation—this episode offers clarity, perspective, and practical guidance.

In this episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast, Ryan Kurczak sits down with Bryan Crigler for a grounded, wide-ranging conversation on what it actually looks like to build a mature Kriya Yoga practice over time.

Bryan shares his winding spiritual path—from early curiosity, martial arts, pranayama, and psychedelic exploration, to discovering Kriya Yoga as a steady, embodied way of realization. Together, Ryan and Bryan explore how disciplined daily practice evolves into something natural and enjoyable, and how surrender, curiosity, and consistency shape long-term progress.

Topics discussed in this episode include:

  • Developing pranic sensitivity and body awareness through breath and attention
  • The role of imagination in working skillfully with pranayama and subtle awareness
  • Navigating plateaus, distractions, and shifting expectations in meditation
  • The difference between peak experiences and stable inner development
  • Psychedelics and spirituality, and why steady practice offers deeper integration
  • How meditation naturally reshapes lifestyle choices, relationships, and habits
  • Working with surrender vs. effort in advanced stages of practice
  • The practical value of the yamas and niyamas beyond moral rules
  • Creating less outer drama to support deeper inner stillness

Throughout the conversation, Bryan reflects on how sustained practice gradually raises the baseline of awareness, allowing meditation to remain accessible even on difficult days. Ryan adds context from lineage teachings, emphasizing patience, embodiment, and fidelity to practice over chasing experiences.

In this episode of the Kriya Yoga Podcast, Ryan Kurczak responds to a thoughtful question many sincere practitioners ask.

What happens when we enter the Kriya path through clarity, discrimination, and philosophical coherence—yet feel hesitant around devotion? When Sāṃkhya’s precision builds trust in the process, the Bhagavad Gita offers a first glimpse of theistic meaning, and Krishna appears as a guide rather than a belief—how do we understand devotion without forcing symbolism or sentiment?

Ryan explores how devotion unfolds organically on the Kriya Yoga path, especially for those whose orientation begins with insight rather than bhakti. He speaks to the natural maturation of devotion as practice deepens, the subtle shift from conceptual understanding to experienced inner relationship, and the role of patience, honesty, and inner readiness.

This conversation gently addresses whether devotion should be cultivated intentionally through study and openness, or allowed to arise on its own through sustained practice—and how both approaches can harmonize within a yogic worldview.

A grounded, clarifying episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast.

This episode unfolds as a thoughtful dialogue shaped by Bryan’s real questions—many of them drawn directly from his own meditation practice and from conversations with fellow students. Together, Bryan and Ryan explore how Kriya Yoga actually shows up in daily life, especially once the practice begins to mature.

They dive into nuanced territory, including:

  • Working skillfully with Yoni (Jyothi) Mudra, subtle awareness, and internalization

  • How to understand and relate to siddhis without distraction or ego inflation
  • Cultivating and trusting intuition through truthfulness and embodiment

In this opening Kriya Yoga Online Sunday Service of the year, we explore a question that sits at the heart of the spiritual path: What part of us doesn’t feel pain?

While pain is an unavoidable part of human life—experienced through the body, emotions, relationships, and changing circumstances—yogic wisdom points to something within us that remains untouched by suffering. This episode reflects on that deeper dimension of our being: the seer, the witness, the Self.

Drawing from the teachings of Kriya Yoga, this talk examines why most people come to spiritual practice through difficulty, dissatisfaction, or a sense of lack—and how meditation, when practiced with the right intention, leads not just to relaxation, but to direct recognition of our essential nature.

We explore:

  • The difference between meditation as relaxation and meditation as realization
  • Why zoning out or calming the mind is not the same as knowing the Self
  • How repeated glimpses of the witness gradually transform the way we experience life
  • Why suffering doesn’t disappear on the spiritual path, but loses its grip
  • How challenges, loss, and change become teachers rather than obstacles

This episode also reflects honestly on the nature of the human world—aging, loss, impermanence, and uncertainty—and why spiritual maturity begins with understanding life as it actually is, not as we wish it to be.

Rather than encouraging escape from the world, this talk invites a deeper presence within it. When awareness shifts from what changes to what is changeless, we discover a center of clarity, peace, and wisdom that supports us through every phase of life.

Whether you are new to meditation or have been practicing for many years, this episode offers a grounded reminder: the part of you that doesn’t feel pain is not something to be created—it is something to be recognized.

In this episode of the Kriya Yoga Podcast, we explore how Internal Family Systems (IFS) can support deeper meditation, psychological integration, and an authentic experience of divine communion.

Drawing from yogic philosophy, contemplative practice, and modern therapeutic insight, this talk examines why sincere meditation and devotion sometimes feel blocked—even after years of practice. The core insight: spiritual realization flourishes most naturally when the inner world is coherent, stable, and Self-led.

Internal Family Systems offers a practical framework for understanding the “parts” of the psyche—protective managers, reactive firefighters, and wounded exiles—and how unresolved inner conflict can quietly interfere with meditation, prayer, and daily spiritual life. When these parts are listened to, integrated, and guided by the Self, inner noise settles and spiritual practice becomes more effortless, spacious, and alive.

The episode connects IFS with key yogic principles such as Īśvara Praṇidhāna (communion or surrender to the Divine), samādhi, and Self-realization, suggesting that psychological healing is not a detour from the spiritual path, but often a powerful accelerator of it.

This conversation is especially relevant for long-time meditators who feel stalled, seekers struggling to sustain inner peace beyond the cushion, or anyone interested in bridging therapy, yoga, and contemplative spirituality in a grounded, discerning way.

In this episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast we talked about Merchant to Mystic, Isha Das’ powerful re-telling of the life of Francis of Assisi—not as a distant saint, but as a true hero whose journey mirrors our own. We explored how this young, privileged pleasure-seeker from medieval Assisi transformed into one of history’s most beloved spiritual figures, and how failure, mission, community, meditation, lifestyle change, and surrender shaped his inner evolution. We also reflected on the pivotal role of Clare of Assisi, the way Francis embodied Christ Consciousness, and how his death reflected the purity of the life he lived. What makes Isha Das’ perspective so compelling is the depth of love and lived experience behind it—his forty years as a psychotherapist and mystical teacher illuminate Francis’ story in a way that feels immediate, human, and deeply relevant for modern seekers.

The Burning Present MomentOn the spiritual path, enthusiasm often gives way to what one teacher called “the icky middle”—that in-between place where the excitement of beginning meets the challenge of transformation. It’s here that we learn: awakening isn’t just about peace or bliss. It’s about endurance, sincerity, and courage to live in the truth of the present moment.

To experience what’s real, we must let go of the small, familiar self. The process can feel raw—like peeling off layers of identity that have clung to us for years. At first, it may even hurt. But that sensitivity marks the beginning of true presence.

Just as Plato’s cave-dweller must adjust to sunlight after a lifetime of shadows, we too must learn to bear the brilliance of awareness. Many retreat back into the dark, but those who stay discover a new world waiting in the light—a world of clarity, love, and direct experience.

Letting go of old patterns, relationships, and self-images brings a natural grief. Yet this too is sacred. We honor what we’ve outgrown without turning back. In that surrender, space opens for joy and freshness—the pulse of Spirit in the present moment.

In Kriya Yoga, our practices—breath, mantra, meditation—are the steady work of freeing ourselves from the cave. When the chains fall away, we begin to sense freedom not as an idea, but as a living awareness. The invitation then is simple but profound:

Stay with the light. Live in the burning present moment where Spirit is always now.

Nirodha Saṁskāra: How the Mind Transforms in Deep YogaOne of the most fascinating ideas in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras is the subtle inner transformation that happens as the mind becomes still.

What Is Nirodha?

Patanjali defines yoga as:

“Yogaś citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ” (Yoga Sutra 1.2)
Yoga is the cessation (nirodha) of the fluctuations of the mind.

But how do we actually reach that state? It doesn’t happen all at once — it’s a gradual transformation where the restless patterns of thought are replaced by inner stillness.

The Two Competing Tendencies

In Sutra 3.9, Patanjali describes two forces in the mind:

  • Vyutthāna Saṁskāra: the tendency toward distraction and mental chatter
  • Nirodha Saṁskāra: the tendency toward silence and restraint

As we meditate and practice, the nirodha-saṁskāras grow stronger, and the vyutthāna-saṁskāras fade away. This shift is called nirodha-pariṇāma, or the transformation toward inner stillness.

The Inner ShiftThe mind doesn’t go silent all at once. It moves through many moments of stillness, where restraint begins to dominate. Over time, these moments string together into a deep, sustained state of peace.

Understanding nirodha-saṁskāra helps us see that meditation isn’t about forcing the mind, but about training it gently, allowing new patterns of stillness to take root. Every time we sit in awareness, we’re imprinting peace into the mind itself.

Yoga is about replacing mental noise with inner clarity. Patanjali’s wisdom reminds us that transformation comes not from struggle, but from consistent practice and subtle inner change.

This episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast is an excerpt from a talk given by Kriya Yoga Teacher Ryan Kurczak during the 2025 Kriya Yoga Online Solstice Retreat.

The Discussion includes:

Supportive Techniques from Chapter I: Sutras I.33–I.39Patanjali offers auxiliary methods to stabilize the mind in Sutras I.33–I.39, forming a meditative ladder:

  • I.33 – Cultivating attitudes of friendliness (toward the happy), compassion (toward the suffering), joy (toward the virtuous), and equanimity (toward the non-virtuous).
  • I.34 – Focusing on the exhalation and natural pause of breath.
  • I.35 – Meditating on subtle sensory experiences (such as inner energy or warmth).
  • I.36 – Contemplating a state free from sorrow and full of inner light.
  • I.37 – Meditating on the consciousness of one who is spiritually free.
  • I.38 – Contemplating dream and deep sleep states.
  • I.39 – Meditating on any object suitable to one’s disposition.

These are not arbitrary suggestions, but a progressive structure. For example, I.33 helps remove emotional and psychological obstacles; I.34–I.35 deepen bodily and energetic awareness; I.36–I.37 open the door to spiritual radiance and guru consciousness; I.38–I.39 reflect the ultimate flexibility and maturity of the practitioner.

The Goal of Samadhi and Spiritual EvolutionThe culmination of sustained meditative practice is Samadhi, described not as an escape from the world but as union with reality. The deeper forms of samadhi signify the dissolution of ego and personal identity, allowing pure consciousness to shine through. As described in Sutra IV.33–IV.34, transformation is a transmutation of form, as the field of consciousness evolves from gross (human) to subtle (divine).

This spiritual evolution requires the practitioner to surrender personal likes, dislikes, and egoic narratives—attaining Vairagya (detachment) and Abhyasa (consistent practice), referenced in Sutra I.12.

This episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast, When You Know Samadhi explores the philosophical and practical aspects of meditation within the framework of Kriya Yoga and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. The main topics include:

  1. The Purpose of Meditation
Meditation is presented not as a relaxation technique but as a means to access one's true, timeless essence. The goal is the cessation of mental fluctuations to recognize the stillness and fullness at the core of being.
  2. Commitment to Practice
The importance of long-term dedication is emphasized. Students are encouraged to remain engaged with the practices over time, as deep realization requires persistent application rather than brief exposure.
  3. Letting Go of the Ego
True yoga involves dissolving the ego—the "personage" that clings to identity and personality. The path is one of surrender and relinquishment of attachments to fully experience spiritual freedom.
  4. Outer and Inner Limbs of Yoga
The essay delineates between the outer practices (yamas, niyamas, asana, pranayama, pratyahara) and the inner practices (dharana, dhyana, samadhi). Mastery of the outer limbs is seen as foundational for accessing the inner experiences.
  5. The Mechanics of Meditation
Meditation (dhyana) is defined as uninterrupted focus on a single object. This focus must be maintained for 12 breaths to be considered meditation, and 144 breaths to reach samadhi. These thresholds offer a concrete structure for understanding meditative depth.
  6. Modern Distractions and Spiritual Focus
The essay criticizes modern distractions like social media and “spiritual doom scrolling.” Instead, it advocates for focused, authentic engagement with traditional texts and practices to cultivate concentration and spiritual discipline.
  7. Spiritual Transformation and Evolution
Spiritual growth is described as a transformation akin to evolution—from human to divine being (deva). This requires pouring the energy and habits of the old self into a new, higher mode of being.
  8. One-Pointedness and Daily Practice
One-pointed focus (ekagrata) is vital not only in meditation but in daily activities. Practicing concentrated awareness throughout life enhances the capacity for deeper meditation.

In this episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast Ryan reflects on a conversation with yoga retreat attendees struggling to understand or experience what is "sacred." This sparks a broader exploration of how modern life—especially overthinking, distractions, and unresolved inner conflicts—prevents many from recognizing sacredness in daily life.

Key Points:

  1. Invitation to Reflect: Listeners are asked to consider what "sacred" means to them personally—how it feels, and what blocks them from experiencing it.
  2. Modern Distractions & Impurities: Our technology-saturated, overly scheduled lives (including spiritual "doom scrolling") clutter the mind, making sacred experiences harder to access.
  3. Overthinking as a Barrier: Many overthink spiritual matters to the point of paralysis. Seeking intellectual proof or control keeps us from directly experiencing the sacred, which transcends logic.
  4. Importance of Simplicity & Stillness: Like in meditation, we must learn to let go of distractions to become receptive. Sacredness arises not through analysis, but through presence and quiet attention.
  5. Trust in Practice Over Proof: Spiritual traditions exist because they offer tested pathways to sacred experience. Rather than demanding proof (e.g., levitating yogis), one must engage the process sincerely and consistently.
  6. Skepticism vs. Surrender: While questioning is natural, endlessly asking “why” is a trap. Faith, curiosity, and practice are needed to move past doubt into lived experience.
  7. Sacredness in Relationship & Practice: True presence—whether with a child, an instrument, or in meditation—creates sacred moments. It’s not about doing more, but about being more present.
  8. Mystics Weren’t Lazy: Saints and mystics across traditions achieved spiritual insight through rigorous and consistent practice, not casual dabbling.
  9. Realization is Beyond the Mind: True spiritual awakening can't be fully described or proven intellectually. It must be experienced directly.
  10. Curiosity Over Control: Rather than trying to control or understand everything, approach the spiritual path with wonder, awe, and dedication.

Final Message: To experience the sacred, stop overthinking. Trust a well-worn path, stay curious, be present, and practice sincerely over time. Sacredness is found not through intellectual mastery, but through lived, open-hearted experience.

In this episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast, we explore the power of Kriya Yoga.

The Power of Kriya Yoga: An Exploration of Self-Realization and TranscendenceKriya Yoga is a profound spiritual discipline that seeks to bridge the gap between the human experience and transcendence. This podcast delves into the reflections shared in a comprehensive lecture on the power of Kriya Yoga, touching on its transformative potential, philosophical underpinnings, and practical applications. Through the lens of a teacher's journey and insights, we explore the essence of this ancient practice.

A Journey of DiscoveryRyan recounts his initial encounter with Kriya Yoga, stemming from a deep yearning for spiritual clarity and understanding. Raised in a Christian tradition that did not fully satisfy his spiritual curiosity, he discovered the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda through the seminal work Autobiography of a Yogi. This exposure ignited a quest for enlightenment, leading to years of dedicated practice and mentorship under Roy Eugene Davis, a direct disciple of Yogananda.

The transformative journey into Kriya Yoga begins with the premise that life is more than a physical or intellectual endeavor—it is a spiritual progression. Kriya Yoga offers a structured, "scientific" approach to transcendence, emphasizing direct experience over abstract philosophy.

Philosophy and PracticeKriya Yoga is rooted in ancient Indian spiritual traditions, particularly the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the Bhagavad Gita. Its philosophy underscores the alignment of mental, emotional, and psychological harmony as prerequisites for spiritual maturity. This discipline demands adherence to ethical principles (Yamas and Niyamas) and consistent meditative practice to unveil higher states of consciousness.

Central to the practice is the idea of directing energy within the body along the spinal pathway, engaging chakras (energy centers) to achieve self-realization. By transcending the limitations of the root chakra—associated with basic survival instincts—practitioners progress through higher centers, unlocking creativity, love, wisdom, and eventually mystical insight.

Mr. Kurczak emphasizes the role of action (Kriya) in this process. Transformation occurs through effort and discipline, aligning one's life with spiritual principles and fostering emotional and psychological balance.

The Mystical UnknowingOne of the most profound aspects of Kriya Yoga is its ability to guide practitioners into a state of "mystical unknowing." Rather than offering definitive answers, it cultivates faith and acceptance of the unknown. This "faith" is not a blind adherence but a trust born from direct experiences of spiritual support and coherence. Life's challenges are reframed as opportunities for growth, providing clarity and resilience through adversity.

Ryan recounts moments of doubt and despair, only to find that persistent practice reveals the intelligence underlying life's difficulties. Meditation and philosophical study serve as tools to decode these challenges, aligning the practitioner's actions and choices with a higher purpose.

The Human JourneyKriya Yoga positions human life as a bridge between primal instincts and divine transcendence. Drawing on the metaphor of the chakras, it describes the evolutionary journey from survival (root chakra) to spiritual illumination (crown chakra). This progression mirrors the transformation of unconscious living to a state of enlightened awareness.

The speaker highlights the importance of personal growth as a foundation for spiritual advancement. Emotional and psychological maturity, cultivated through introspection and therapeutic practices, lays the groundwork for deeper meditation. This interplay between inner harmony and spiritual practice reflects the integrative nature of Kriya Yoga.

Practical ImplicationsKriya Yoga's teachings extend beyond the meditation cushion. The discipline advocates for a life of integrity, authenticity, and alignment with universal truths. Practitioners are encouraged to live in harmony with the world, adopting sustainable practices, cultivating meaningful relationships, and embodying principles of truth and nonviolence.

Moreover, the speaker underscores the importance of personal effort and commitment. Spiritual progress is not a passive journey but one that requires active engagement with life's challenges and a willingness to let go of outdated beliefs and habits.

ConclusionKriya Yoga offers a path to transcendence through a blend of philosophy, meditation, and ethical living. Its transformative power lies in its ability to harmonize the mind, body, and spirit, guiding practitioners toward direct experiences of the divine.

As the speaker concludes, life itself becomes a form of divine communion, where every experience—joyful or painful—serves as a teacher. The ultimate goal is to realize the innate coherence of existence and to embody a state of enlightened awareness.

This podcast encapsulates the essence of Kriya Yoga as not merely a practice but a profound way of being, offering a roadmap to spiritual self-discovery and the realization of life's deeper purpose.

In this episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast, we explore:

The ultimate goal of meditation, according to authentic spiritual traditions, is to foster clarity, wisdom, and a deep connection with the divine. However, many practitioners unwittingly use meditation as a means of escapism. Instead of addressing psychological or emotional wounds, they employ meditation to suppress these issues, akin to putting a temporary bandage over a wound.

For example, individuals might meditate to escape from stress, avoid confronting trauma, or simply to appear virtuous. While such practices may offer momentary relief, they do not lead to the transformative insights that authentic meditation can provide. This misuse of meditation creates a stagnant spiritual experience, where the practitioner remains stuck in superficial states of awareness.

The Role of Discipline and Self-ReflectionA crucial stage in meditation is the development of discipline. Beginners often struggle with restless minds and the inability to focus, necessitating a period of consistent practice. This foundational phase, which may last several years, builds the capacity for stillness and concentration. However, discipline should not become an end in itself. Beyond the initial stage, practitioners must engage in self-reflection, asking themselves why they meditate and what they aim to achieve.

A critical shift from using meditation as a means of avoidance to treating it as a tool for inner transformation is essential. This involves addressing unresolved psychological complexes, embracing emotional vulnerabilities, and working through past traumas. The analogy of attending to "screaming children" within one’s psyche illustrates the importance of resolving inner conflicts before seeking the higher states of consciousness described in spiritual texts.

Practical Steps for Effective MeditationActionable advice for enhancing the quality of meditation:

  1. Set Clear Intentions: Reflect on your motivations for meditating. Are you seeking clarity and transformation, or are you avoiding unresolved issues?
  2. Limit Duration Wisely: Meditate for as long as you can remain fully present. A short, focused session is more impactful than hours of distracted sitting.
  3. Address Psychological Barriers: Seek professional help for persistent emotional or psychological issues. Techniques such as EMDR or internal family systems therapy can complement meditation.
  4. Cultivate Yamas and Niyamas: Practice truthfulness, contentment, and other yogic principles to create a foundation of ethical and emotional stability.
  5. Simplify Your Life: Minimize distractions and overcommitment to create a conducive environment for deep meditation.
  6. Honor the Body: Maintain a balanced diet, exercise moderately, and ensure adequate rest to support a healthy nervous system.

In this episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast, I interview Edwin Bryant of Rutgers University. (https://edwinbryant.org/)

Mr. Bryant has written several books, including a commentary on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and its sequel Bhakti Yoga. Along with being a prolific writer and teacher, Edwin Bryant has been a practitioner of Bhakti Yoga for over 45 years.

Since we don’t spend enough time speaking about Bhakti on this podcast, I felt he would be an inspiring guest to say more about the path of devotion. I hope you enjoy this interesting and informational conversation as much as I did.

You can find Professor Bryant's books here:

We consider the necessity of letting go from traditions that might have once been a profound source of inspiration, and if there is any way to avoid an unnecessary break with an authentic tradition.

In this episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast, we speak with Roy Thibodeau, a student of Kriya Yoga teacher, Oliver Black. https://www.yogacharyaoliver.com/

Ryan Kurczak and Roy Thibodeau talk about the book "My Dear Oliver", a limited edition book, which is a collection of the letters that Paramahansa Yogananda sent to Oliver Black.

About our guest Roy Thibodeau

Golden Lotus Yoga for Spiritual Awareness (GLYSA) was founded by Roy E. Thibodeau & Mary Ann Thibodeau in 2011. We have been disciples of Yogacharya J. Oliver Black for over 45 years and GLYSA was founded to assure the continuation our lineage, legacy, and heritage through Babaji, Lahiri Mahasaya, Sri Yukteswar, Paramahansa Yogananda, and Yogacharya Oliver. Yogacharya Oliver was one of Paramahansa Yogananda’s most advanced direct disciples, establishing the Detroit, Michigan Self Realization Fellowship (SRF) Center which he ran as an SRF minister from 1951 until 1980’s. He also established Song of the Morning Yoga Retreat in Northern Michigan which he ran until his MahaSamadhi September 16, 1989. He remained an SRF Minister, Authorized by Paramahansa Yogananda & SRF to give Kriya Yoga Initiation to qualified candidates until his MahaSamadhi. You can find out more about Yogacharya Oliver at www.yogacharyaoliver.com. Because of Yogacharya’s relationship and loyalty to Paramahansa Yogananda & SRF he was never able to authorize any of his disciples to Initiate candidates into Kriya Yoga.

Because of this situation and knowing our destiny to continue our Linage through Yogacharya Oliver we pursued authorization to perform Kriya Yoga Initiations through the help of Roy Eugene Davis another direct disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda and brother disciple to Yogacharya Oliver. We asked him to ordain us authorizing us to give Kriya Yoga Initiation under Yogacharya Oliver’s authority. Roy graciously agreed and ordained us under Yogacharya Oliver’s authority. Because of that we incorporated two names into the name of our organization.

This episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast, we explore the necessity of focus.

Key Points:

  1. Focus and Intentionality in Spiritual Practice: Ryan Kurczak emphasizes that achieving spiritual goals requires focus on actions aligned with those goals and letting go of distractions.
  2. Yoga’s Definition in the Sutras: He references Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, particularly the idea that yoga is about ceasing fluctuations of the mind, allowing connection with the eternal self or "Purusha."
  3. Concentration as a Core Skill: Spiritual practice demands developing concentration, a skill that enables one to transcend life's constant changes and achieve inner peace.
  4. Example of the Sleepless Saint: Kurczak draws on "Autobiography of a Yogi" where the Sleepless Saint describes the extensive meditation required for enlightenment, showing that dedication over decades fosters deep spiritual insight.
  5. Realistic Spiritual Growth: Although intense practice can lead to enlightenment, Kurczak underscores that small, regular meditation also brings significant progress, reducing the fear of death and afterlife anxieties.
  6. Stages of Conscious Growth: Early life experiences, shaped by past karma, lead to conscious awareness, ultimately allowing adults to make mindful choices towards spiritual maturity.
  7. Ego and Identity: Moving beyond personal ego is crucial, as spiritual progress involves letting go of individual identity in favor of unity with the larger self.
  8. Long-Term Commitment: Spiritual growth is rooted in consistent, uninterrupted practice over many years, coupled with respect and devotion, a point supported by both the Sleepless Saint's example and the Yoga Sutras.
  9. Patience and Allowing Natural Progression: Rather than forcing intense experiences, one should allow spiritual progress to unfold naturally, letting each stage build a solid foundation for the next.
  10. Universal Spiritual Lessons: Finally, Kurczak emphasizes that all spiritual work, even minimal, contributes to clarity, inner peace, and alignment with one's spiritual aspirations.

These points underscore the significance of patience, self-awareness, and dedication in spiritual practice, offering guidance for practitioners at any stage of their journey.

"Many people imagine that they can skip to higher stages of spiritual awareness without attending to lower stages. This is not true, and it is likely why so many spiritually inclined people, while well-meaning, don’t actually possess any authentic spiritual experience. Their minds may be filled with accurate descriptions of spiritual experience, from listening to their spiritual teachers or reading helpful spiritual texts, but they have not had the direct experience themselves. If they were to follow the steps, without trying to skip ahead or above their current capacity, they would find a beautiful path ready to nourish their mind and consciousness with uplifting and enlightening realizations. These realizations would clarify their field of awareness, and they would live and behave in an enlightened manner naturally, without force or strain.

The purpose of this class series is to give you the map in the form of accurate knowledge about the process, and also encourage you to follow the procedures in the order that will result in actual spiritual liberation."

The core of the talk revolves around the teachings from the Yoga Sutras, particularly Sutra 23 in Chapter 3, which highlights the importance of friendship and its role in developing spiritual strength. The speaker explains that by contemplating and engaging in true friendship, one can cultivate immense spiritual power akin to the strength of an elephant. This concept extends beyond mere social friendliness to include deep, internal self-compassion and acceptance.

The discussion delves into the idea that many people turn to meditation and spirituality due to underlying emotional or psychological distress. It is emphasized that instead of using meditation as a means to suppress these feelings, individuals should foster a compassionate relationship with themselves, recognizing and attending to their inner wounds. This approach not only enhances meditation practice but also leads to genuine spiritual growth and strength.

Mr. Kurczak also shares personal anecdotes, including the impact of significant losses in his life, which forced him to internalize support and engage in profound self-analysis. He cites the book "No Bad Parts" by Richard Schwartz, which aligns with the talk’s theme of embracing all aspects of oneself with love and compassion.

In conclusion, Ryan encourages listeners to practice self-analysis, cultivate internal friendship, and approach meditation not as an escape but as a means to become more present, alive, and spiritually robust.

Self-realization is an unqualified, aware, present state of being. It is a synonym for enlightenment, nirvana, atma[1] jnana[2], etc. Self-realization occurs when one is awake and aware of one’s timeless essence, free of identification with any thought, emotion, memory, perception, object, or feeling. Self-realization is evident when these vrittis[3] (activities in consciousness) have subsided. The system of Yoga[4] was developed to encourage a repeatable procedure to experience Self-realization.

The central practice of Yoga which provides a route to Self-realization is samadhi[5]. Samadhi is cognitive absorption. It is a state of consciousness where one focuses attention to a point, such that one is aware of what is focused on at the exclusion of all else. Repeatedly accessing samadhi, in a conscious way, results in an experience of timelessness and freedom from identification with a sense of limitation.

Samadhi is the culmination of a structured approach to meditation which results in sustained, one-pointed focus. This structured approach is called Sanyama[6]. Sanyama is described in The Yoga Sutras, Chapter 3, verses 1-3 states, “Dharana[7] is a fixation of the field of consciousness within a focal point. The single directionality of thought towards the chosen focal point is meditation. When the field of consciousness reflects the chosen focal point alone, as if empty of its own form, there is cognitive absorption.”

[1] Atma Defined: The Self. Transcendent being.

[2] Jnana Defined: Knowledge. Not data, but wisdom/knowing.

[3] Vritti Defined: Fluctuations in the field of consciousness.

[4] Yoga Defined: A formal practice with the intention, structure and purpose to cultivate repeated experiences of spiritual experience that result in absolute soul-freedom.

[5] Samadhi Defined: Cognitive absorption.

[6] Sanyama Defined: Sustained focus on a chosen object of awareness that culminates in Samadhi.

[7] Dharana Defined: Focusing consciousness an a chosen object.

Welcome back to Season 2 of The Kriya Yoga Podcast. Kriya Yoga teacher and psychoanalyst David McGrath (https://www.davidmcgrath.ie/) and I explore the benefits of counseling and psychotherapy as a way to accelerate one's spiritual growth process. Over the last 25 years, I have had significant shifts in capacity for meditation by engaging with a counselor, when needed, to help address psychological blind spots and complexes, and have seen outstanding progress in students of Kriya Yoga who remained steady in their meditation practice and supplemented their spiritual growth procedures with effective guidance from a skilled psychological professional.

If you have been practicing for a while, and are curious why your spiritual awareness is not deepening or expanding, the topic of this podcast could make a big difference in your appreciation of the spiritual path.

In this discussion we talk about my own experiences moving through difficult internal dynamics as well as the difficulty finding a helpful guide on the path to psychological harmony. Yogananda was known to have said that 90% of the spiritual battle is psychological, and after that, it tends to take care of itself. In the Bhagavad Gita, the allegory is one of profound inner growth and resolving the tendencies of confusion, doubt, fear, etc. For those on an advanced path to spiritual realization, consideration of the themes within this podcast will be of great benefit. You can also explore episode #95 from season 1, Healing Blockages of the Heart Chakra to deepen your understanding of this discussion.

Roy Eugene Davis was a Kriya Yoga Guru/Teacher in the lineage of teachers, Mahavatar Babaji, Lahiri Mahasaya, Swami Sri Yukteswar and Paramahansa Yogananda. Mr. Davis, was initiated by Yogananda and ordained by Yogananda to teach Kriya Yoga. He was one of the youngest student's of Yogananda to be ordained.

I met Mr. Davis in the late summer of 2000, and was fortunate to have had 18 years to learn Kriya Yoga from him. In this episode, we consider Roy Eugene Davis' life and what I learned from him as a student in the Kriya Yoga Tradition.

In this episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast, we have a very special presentation. Robert Martin began the Kriya Yoga Apprenticeship Program in 2019. He joined us this past September of 2022, for another end-of-year Kriya Yoga Apprenticeship retreat, and gave a talk to the participants, sharing how he has changed and developed since beginning Kriya Meditation and applying the recommended yogic lifestyles guidelines. His testimony was well received, and so I thought it useful to share with you, the audience of The Kriya Yoga Podcast. It is my wish that his words share the possibilities one can experience after consistent practice of Kriya Yoga.

Also, I want to take some time to wholeheartedly thank the supporters of this podcast. This podcast is supported by The Journal of A Kriya Yoga Patreon Community, and the donations from students of the 2-Year Kriya Yoga Apprenticeship Program. If you would like to support this kriya yoga ministry, consider joining our Journal of a Kriya Yoga Teacher Patreon community or applying to the 2-year Kriya Yoga Apprenticeship Program. The greatest power of Kriya Yoga is to give the direct experience of Samadhi.  Every step of Yoga practice is important to contribute to this experience.  In this episode, we talk about tips, pointers and indicators that can help lift your Kriya Yoga practice from a basic relaxation routine to a dynamic tool for experiencing a state of Oneness.

Much of this conversation is a continuation of an earlier podcast done with Zoe Mae, a Sanskrit teacher. The Most Important Siddhi - The Kriya Yoga Podcast Episode 50 (podbean.com) Thanks to her work and the work of Vyaas Houston of the American Sanskrit Institute we have so much accessible knowledge about how the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali inform us about the process of Samadhi.  Thank you Zoe and Vyaas.

This episode of the Kriya Yoga Podcast is an excerpt from a monthly Kriya Yoga Apprenticeship Q&A session. In this episode we discuss the path to experiencing samadhi as it is taught in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. We explore how it can be approached naturally and is accessible to anyone with the time and devotion to cultivate its experience. We also lightly touch upon ways to encourage inner light and sound perception. This is sometimes called shabda yoga.  However, it is an experience common to practitioner's of Kriya Yoga, and is also a method of Kriya Yoga meditation practice.

In this episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast, I interview Zoe Mai. This is a very important episode. Zoe and I discuss the deeper meditation practices within the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. These practices lead one to the direct and repeatable experience of Samadhi and transcendence. We also discuss the most important siddhis as described in chapter three of Patanjali's work.

Zoe Mai is the director of the American Sanskrit Institute. She studied with Vyaas Houston from the summer of 2006 until his retirement and has been dedicated to teaching Sanskrit using the ASI Learning Model since 2007. This chant, Mahāmrityunjaya Mantra, महामृत्युंजय मंत्र or महामृत्युञ्जय मन्त्र, also known as the Rudra Mantra or Tryambakam Mantra, is a verse (sūkta) of the Rigveda (RV 7.59.12). The sūkta is addressed to Tryambaka, "The Three-eyed One", an epithet of Rudra who is identified with Shiva in Shaivism. The verse also recurs in the Yajurveda (TS 1.8.6.i; VS 3.60).

One of my favorite mantras to chant, this is often misunderstood to be a mantra for physical immortality.  It is in essence a mantra for the realization of what actually IS immortal, and how you are that beyond name and form.

Due to the support of our Kriya Yoga Apprenticeship Students and our Kriya Yoga Patreon Community, I've been able to spend some time recording this sacred music.

It is my intention that you will be able to listen and chant along with this music before your own meditation practices, to help you move more fully into the process. This chant can also be played at the beginning of each day, to remember what is true.

Our guest today is Marty Wuttke, neurofeedback specialist and Kriya Yoga teacher. Marty was interviewed previously on episode 16 of the Kriya Yoga Podcast.  https://kriyayoga.podbean.com/e/neuroscience-and-kriya-meditation-the-kriya-yoga-podcast-episode-16/

In this episode, we continue our discussion on meditation and its relationship to neuroscience.  We also explore Marty's new book The Brain Sutras.

As a pioneer in the field of bio- and neurofeedback, Marty developed his unique and holistic approach to neurotherapy (Wuttke Method) based on over 35 years of experience in the field. Beginning as a deeply committed meditation teacher, he quickly saw the need for adding a scientifically based, neurophysiological component to catalyze meditation training and help meditators reach a freer and happier life.

Since 1990, Marty has been teaching neurotherapy in the United States, United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Ukraine, Thailand, and Mexico. He has been a trainer and keynote speaker for several organizations, such as the Georgia and Greater Washington Associations of Applied Psychophysiology and the Menninger Clinic. He has been a consultant to various hospitals and organizations around the nation, including the Texas Commission on Drug and Alcoholism where he helped introduce neurofeedback into several state programs in Texas. Marty created and guided the neurotherapy program in a study looking at the use of neurofeedback to reduce recidivism rates with California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) in California. He continues to consult and teach neurotherapy as well as meditation, yogic science of consciousness, and holistic nutrition.

Some experience the meditation and an awakening process as a crisis. This is not an uncommon experience. It is even alluded to as part of the beginning of our real work on a spiritual path in texts such as The Bhagavad Gita and Vasistha's Yoga. In this episode, we will discuss why spiritual work can sometimes seem like a crisis of identity.

In this episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast, we dig into deeper spiritual topics. I am joined by Mitch Hankins, creator of https://www.instinctualwellbeing.com/ and fellow Kriya Yoga student, and together we explore the following questions:

  1. How do the concepts of "control / discipline" and "letting go" fit together?
  2. What is selflessness and how does that relate to the Kriya path?
  3. Mr. Davis spoke often of pursuing Self- and God-realization for the total evolution of consciousness, and to consider this endeavor to be a "purposeful, evolutionary process" vs. desiring enlightenment for selfish reasons. Could you expand or further explain what is meant by this?
  4. How do we as "jivas" (individualized units of consciousness) relate to each other? Are we co-experiencing one reality? Do different people/things/beings actually exist, or is all of this just a figment of one's imagination?
  5. Do you think contemplating death is useful while on the spiritual path? If so, how does it help?
  6. Our guest today is Marty Wuttke, neurofeedback specialist and Kriya Yoga teacher.

Every Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, our Kriya Yoga Apprenticeship Program convenes for a week long retreat. The following talk is from the 2019 Year 2 Kriya Yoga Apprenticeship retreat. Our topic centered upon the work of Swami Sri Yukteswar. In his book the Holy Science, he discusses spiritual baptism, and the profound effects of contemplating the "word of God".  In christian traditions it is amen. In Yoga it is OM.

In this episode, Phil McLemore and I discuss statements in the New Testament that indicate the philosophy of Jesus in harmony with Yoga practice. We discuss the value of considering the teachings of Jesus as a mystical (maybe even yogic) way to enlightenment. Mr. McLemore gives us plenty of examples of statements attributed to Jesus related to the core practices of meditation and non-attachment.

Our Guest: Philip McLemore worked as a Campus Minister for 8 years at Auburn University, AL, and the University of Georgia. He then served as an active duty Air Force Chaplain for 21 years, followed by 8 years as a Hospice Chaplain. Philip turned to yoga meditation to help with a health crisis and awakened to an expansive spiritual life previously un-imagined. He has been teaching meditation for 20 years and has developed a system for teaching yoga meditation to Mormons and Christians. He was taught Kriya Yoga by Roy Eugene Davis, a direct student of Paramahansa Yogananda. In 2008 Mr. Davis ordained and authorized Phil to teach Kriya Yoga meditation and philosophy.

In this episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast we will explore what it means to live a successful life from a yogic, or spiritual, perspective. These ideas can also be related to living a life of purpose.  Yogananda was known to have said that the purpose of life was very different from what most people think. If we can grasp how a spiritual perspective views what success truly means, all our questions about our life's purpose will likely be resolved.

Just before dawn on August 14th, 2000 I met my spiritual teacher, Roy Eugene Davis, a direct disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda.  It was the Monday morning meditation session at the beginning of a weeklong retreat at the Center for Spiritual Awareness in Lakemont, GA.  The meditation hall was dark, barely lit by a streetlight shining through the Eastern facing glass doors.  I sat quietly in the third row back with the other retreat participants waiting for the first session of the week to begin...
