Boonmee McElroy recently released her first book, "I Hate Potatoes: They Make Me Cry". It's a huge accomplishment and something she said would be happening when we spoke to each other for Episode 92 of this podcast. Boonmee lived through an impoverished and abusive childhood in Thailand. For the first time, in her new book, she tells the full story and how she uses her experiences to better her life and the lives of others.
For me, this is the 100th episode of my podcast. It's a huge accomplishment to have published so many meaningful conversations.

Thanousay "T" Khamphoune realized a few years ago that sharing his story might be encouraging to others that have had a lot to overcome. As a child, he and his siblings had to live with different family members while his parents had legal problems. He was frequently moving and changing schools. Eventually being reunited with his dad brought some positives but also many challenges and threats of being taken away from his parents once again.
Through all of this he's continued to work hard, pursue his dreams, and maintain the best life that he could. Sadly, he lost his youngest brother to suicide in the fall of 2021, adding another trauma to his family life.
Still, "T" strives to be encouraging to others facing difficult challenges in their own lives.

Gary Arndt is the creator and host of the "Everything Everywhere Daily" podcast. The podcast is a newer extension of his work as a successful travel blogger on the website everything-everywhere.com. Gary's podcast showcases his never-ending curiosity and wide variety of interests, while providing great, well-written information in a short amount of time each day for his audience.
In this conversation we discuss the growing success of his podcast and some of what he has learned from it in the first year and a half. Plus we share observations and lessons from traveling. Gary has been to well over 200 countries and territories, each US state twice, and each Canadian province three times.

Jeff Rinde was one of the other neighborhood farm kids when I was growing up in rural central Minnesota in the 1990s. While my family continually became less and less involved with farming, Jeff and his two older siblings partnered with their parents to expand the family farm into a much larger family business.
What drew him to a life of farming? What does it take to make it as a modern farmer? The beef industry is accused of being one of the causes of climate change. Is farming sustainable?

My oldest two nephews Chase Carstensen and AJ Torfin joined me for an epic road trip to eleven national parks and three national monuments. In this episode we recap our exciting journey. We did the Delta Lake hike at Grand Teton National Park, the Angels Landing hike at Zion National Park, hiked to waterfalls at Glacier National Park, and whitewater rafted through Browns Canyon in Colorado.
Chase is quite the adventurer and the main guest in this episode. AJ and I attempt to guide Chase through some of our observations we had of him during our journey. Chase turned 18 years old during the road trip.

Luke Boser left small town Minnesota shortly after high school nearly 20 years ago and has been living in Alaska and a few other distant places ever since.
Visiting Alaska for the first time recently, I concluded that a certain type of person settles there. Luke is an outdoorsy, rugged, adventurer, which seems to fit the demographic. He shares the story of his recent trip to hunt for a brown bear, something relatively few people are able to do.

Natalia Cortes has been living in San Francisco for almost three years and this experience has had a big impact on her life. Originally from Colombia in South America, she spent nearly a decade studying and working in several different countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Now in the United States for a few years, she's gained a lot of perspective on what it takes to make it in Silicon Valley, and how vastly different the cultures are in the United States.
Natalia has been traveling to many parts of the United States recently and happened to be in Minnesota when the Derek Chauvin trial verdict was announced for his murder of George Floyd. We share opinions on that and how it ties into history and the importance of understanding history.

Boonmee McElroy has overcome extraordinary obstacles in her life. Growing up in poverty in a small village in Thailand, vital things like food and education were not always available to her. After years of struggle she began to grow a career as an international life coach and inspirational speaker in Asia.
As fate would have it, she met an American man while on a flight, eventually married him, and settled into a new life in Rochester, Minnesota. Now over a decade and many big life events later, Boonmee (Oui) is re-establishing her former career as a life coach and inspirational speaker.

Noah Franske has a passion for math and for adventure. That combination has led him to Vietnam where he has been teaching math at an international school for the last 18 months.
One of his math-related interests is investing and personal finance. A portion of his investment portfolio is devoted to cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin.
In the conversation, Noah helps me talk through some of my recent thoughts regarding crypto and the stock market. He also explains what the pandemic has been like in Vietnam as an ex-pat. Plus we explore the term "ex-pat" and how it's not used in the United States.

Krizia Almoite has not been a photographer for long. When she lost her job in the middle of the pandemic, Krizia put nearly all of her time into making her newest interest into her new career. In under six months she's landed some big clients and was hired as the photographer for a new movie being filmed in Minnesota.
She's building a growing brand through social media by being the same open and unbashful person I've always known her to be. Krizia is opiniated, expresses her self freely, and attempts to bring out the best in the people around her.
Through her self-expression, I realized that I too was someone that could have a photoshoot: a thought that I had never considered before. As I post the photos from my photoshoot around the release of this episode, I'm learning to be confident about my appearance in a new way. And I have Krizia to thank for that. Amanda Koonjbeharry has an impressive résumé of social work. Currently she is the Director of Public Policy for the Citizens League of Minnesota. Previously she had led a project for anti-sex trafficking in the Minneapolis area, and has been involved in numerous roles that serve communities and families that are in need. She holds two Master's degrees (Social Work & Public Policy) and a Bachelor's degree (Family Social Science) from the University of Minnesota. In 2018, Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal named Amanda as a "40 Under 40" honoree.
In the conversation we discuss some of the projects she has worked on, what motivates her to do the work she does, and how her family being from Guyana ties into all of it. Plus we reflect on 2020 and look ahead to 2021.

Larry Rose was a Side Judge in the National Football League for nearly 20 years. He worked Super Bowl XLII when the New York Giants defeated the previously undefeated New England Patriots. Since retiring from the NFL five years ago he's taught, trained, or supervised football officials from the NCAA's Southeastern Conference and umpires from summer collegiate baseball's Northwoods League.

AJ Torfin is my oldest nephew. He has been working extremely hard over the past few years to earn a scholarship to play football in college following his senior year in high school.
His senior year in high school is taking place online only. And his fall football season was originally postponed until spring before a recent decision moved the season back to the fall.

Ryan Voz is co-owner of the Willmar Stingers baseball team located in central Minnesota. Like virtually all of sports leagues in America, the Northwoods League schedule couldn't go on as originally planned. That meant Ryan and his franchise could cancel the season, or they could "roll with the punches" and make the most out of a difficult situation.
On August 20, the Stingers finished their season, playing 42 total games, 24 home games, and averaging 254 fans per game.
Ryan explains the challenges, if it was worth it, and how he has grown as a person through this stressful summer.

Matt Bishop has been through more in eight years than most people will go through in 80 years. Surviving cancer twice, a bone marrow transplant, a coma, and withstanding dialysis everyday and severe back pain, each day brings its challenges.
But Matt is a fighter. He has loyal and loving family and friends in his corner. Through this, Matt is writing a book called "The Heart Of The Fighter".
Matt wants to share his story so that everyone knows that no matter the circumstances they can keep fighting.

As the NBA season was being suspended and the NCAA basketball tournaments were being canceled, so were the seasons of sports teams and leagues all across the country. University of Montevallo's head baseball coach Chandler Rose is still dealing with the emotions of having relationships suddenly change and the work invested in to the season disappear.
Chandler, in his 10th season as head coach of the NCAA Division II school in Alabama, shares his perspective on what he dealt with in mid-March and what happens next for his players.
Ten years after a battle with cancer, Chandler reflects on what he's learned.

As Superintendent/Principal, Ryan Baron has been challenged to oversee and execute an entire new way of educating school children. Some kids did not have internet access at home. Others rely on the school meals.
The communities of Tri-County Schools in northwestern Minnesota, like all school districts in the state, have transitioned as best they can.
Ryan was my first best friend during our time in school in Browerville, Minnesota. He was my guest on Episode 11 of the podcast as well. During that episode we talked a lot about his passion for genealogy and family history and got back into that topic near the end of this conversation.

Tibor Majzik accepted a deal seemingly too good to refuse when he decided to study for free in Denmark for a year. Tibor, from Hungary, decided to stay and finish his education there only leaving for semesters abroad in South Korea and Australia. Now married and beginning his career, he shares his perspectives on what makes Denmark such a great place to live.

Kiki Seit was studying at a university in Italy when the country began to get overwhelmed by the novel coronavirus. She shares the story of how she realized she needed to leave the country and booked a flight home to Kyrgyzstan the day before Italy went on lockdown and was able leave the country the day after. She has been forced into quarantine ever since arriving to her country.
Kiki and I met in Greece two weeks before this came to fruition. She is one of the great people I met on my journey and we share the story that brought us together randomly.

Mariah (Moss) Schumacher's plan for an extensive journey through Europe laid the groundwork for my recent opportunity to travel there. My week in Greece split between Athens and Crete gave me ample time to begin to know Mariah who has been touring the continent since July 2019.
Mariah finds beauty in places and situations others might not. Mariah has endless love to give, which helps to explain how polyamory exists in their life. Mariah's awareness of their own energy and that of others helps to explain why they choose to use gender-neutral pronouns to describe themself.
Mariah's journey through Europe and journey through life is one that is impacting many.

Gene Healy is someone I have met a few times in the past year and the more I am around him the more fascinated I became. He has meandered around the world for many years learning about himself and incorporated much of what he has discovered into his healing practice in Florida where he leads his clients through acupuncture, meditation and more.
He has briefly been a rapper. He has briefly been a monk. He has a great story about a silent retreat. He's always seeking to learn and grow. He and I share that mentality and I met him because of that at some events led by Michael Bernoff.

While the world was stunned and saddened by the tragic death of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and six others, Steven Brown was struck personally by the loss of three of those six other lesser known individuals.
Steven was a player for baseball coach John Altobelli at Orange Coast College in the mid-2000s and remained very close with "Alto" ever since beginning his coaching career. He's known the entire Altobelli family, including Keri and Alyssa who also perished with their husband and father in the crash.
In this episode, Steven shares some personal stories and lessons from his connection with John and his family. We also discuss how we met in 2011 and Steven's journey so far in his coaching career.

Dave Overlund and I have similar backgrounds. We both grew up as big sports fans in Minnesota and pursued a career in sports broadcasting while studying at St. Cloud State University. Dave has stayed on that path, working in radio in St. Cloud for several years.
In December, when St. Cloud State cut its football program, I took notice to an opinionated article Dave wrote about the sudden decision. It expressed a sentiment shared by many and called out some of the decision makers at the University.

Lee Bush has one son. As a single mother, it was a constant challenge to keep her son out of trouble. His list of mental health afflictions includes Asperger syndrome, ADHD, Intermittent Explosive Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Dysthymia, and PTSD. Once he became an adult, it was out of her control as he entered the legal system and was treated like a typical prisoner. Lee is working and hoping to get changes to the system so that when her son returns to civilian life he has a better chance to stay out of trouble than before. And generally she hopes more people can be more compassionate towards the challenges of others.
Lee recently also experienced the sudden death of a man she was dating and shares the positives she can take from that hardship.
Lee is treasurer for Minnesota Mineral Club where she considers herself a rockhound. And she is a member of Freethought Toastmasters.

Drew Nicholas is director and producer for "Blood Memory: A Story of Removal and Return". This decade long project is culminating with screenings in select cities and a international release on public television in 2020. The film shares perspectives and emotions of individuals taken from their tribal communities to be raised to lose their identity in boarding schools and with White families.
Drew was in his early 20's when beginning the project and is now in his 30's and a changed person. This is a conversation about a young man learning about himself while learning about and telling the stories of a community which he had no previous ties.

Comedian Mark Normand has been making waves recently in the world of stand up comedy. Jerry Seinfeld thinks he could be the next comedy star and Joe Rogan recently had him as a guest on his ultra popular podcast.
Meanwhile, I have been infatuated with his dark comedy to the point where I question whether I should even be laughing at some of what he says. But I do laugh. He is hilarious to me. Millions of people struggle with a social anxiety disorder called shy bladder syndrome, or bashful bladder syndrome, or paruresis. I am one of them.
This is labeled a bonus episode because there is no guest. As the podcast continues with a greater focus on vulnerability, I felt it was right to share a story from my life that has impacted me greatly.
Having a shy bladder dictated how I approached or avoided social situations for several years. I am not over this still. But I've learned to deal with it, in part by becoming more willing to talk about. For a very long time I told no one. I thought I was the only one. I suffered in silence. I felt tremendous shame and embarrassment. It was a great lesson for me to become more open with my struggles. Perhaps it will do the same for you.

Ryan Voz has sustained a successful career in baseball for over 20 years. He was the general manager of the Alexandria Beetles baseball team during the five summers that Curt Carstensen was the team's play-by-play broadcaster in the early 2000s. For the last 10 years Ryan has been co-owner/operator of the Willmar Stingers baseball team. In the conversation with Curt, Ryan shares some of the lessons he's learned through his baseball journey. Tom Jump is a philosopher and has weekly debates on his YouTube Channel, TJump. He most commonly debates expert theologians to promote reason and atheism and debunk religious claims. Tom, dealing with depression and social anxiety, has spent much of the last decade secluded, studying philosophy and writing a model of epistemology and morality, which he uses to defend his arguments on his YouTube Channel. Hodan Nur arrived to the United States as an adult nearly 20 years ago with no English and little formal education. After many years and a few setbacks, Hodan recently received her GED, the equivalent to a high school diploma. In this conversation with Curt Carstensen, a former tutor, Hodan explains some of the difficulties she's endured, such as not knowing how to help her child with her kindergarten homework and struggling to have enough money to eat.
