Do we stop to tell athletes how dope they are as human beings? Athletes can get stuck for years if they don't know who they are. We have to give athletes opportunities to have integrated experiences. Athletes need an opportunity to make sense of who they are.

As athletes we grow accustomed to a certain way of doing things. We understand that if we put in the work, we will see results. Life does not necessarily work the same way. If you are at the free throw line and you miss the first one you can simply bend your knees a little more and knock down the second one. Unfortunately life isn’t that simple.

Often times society can fail to see our utility outside of sport and it often leads to athletes being enabled instead of others building us up. Over time the responsibility of being a collegiate student-athlete can take a toll on you physically, psychologically, and emotionally. When you finally step away from your sport you enter a time of extreme vulnerability. Many athletes get involved in sport as way to cope. Once it’s over we are forced to deal with issues that we have suppressed for years. It is extremely dangerous when your sport is stripped away from you.

Life as a college athlete is similar to a dictatorship considering the fact that we don’t have to think for ourselves. Many former student-athletes have no idea how to function independently.
Life after sport is often the first competition athletes find themselves totally unprepared for. They find themselves competing again people who have spent years preparing themselves for careers in tech and STEM while most athletes spent years preparing to win championships. We find ourselves playing catch up.

Many student-athletes come out of college with an interesting combination. Full scholarship athletes have no debt and a crazy mentality. Often times we focus on what we lost because we no longer have our sport. In reality we should focus on what we do have and use those things to our advantage as we move forward.

When you want something bad enough, obstacles don’t really matter.
When adversity comes into your life that’s a sign for you to level up!
The transition into life after sport is often rough because as athletes we grow accustomed to doing one thing but no one really prepares us for the day when that one thing is over. We spend so much time devoted to our sport that we don’t take the time to develop our other gifts and talents. The one thing that gave us all of our confidence is stripped from us and it seems like it happens overnight.
Many of us struggle to figure out what sort of value we have if we can no longer score points. You do not want to miss this episode with special guest Yolanda Moore.

Life after sport leaves a big void and many former athletes are short sighted. They often and make poor decisions as they are scrambling to figure out what’s next. It happens so quickly. We go from living the life of an athlete and being somewhat spoiled to sometimes struggling to find full time employment. Once we finally transition into life after sport we feel as if we are losing a piece of who we are. For years our sport took up the majority of our time and it seems as if it’s all over in the blink of an eye.

In order to become an elite athlete you have to believe that you are the best. However, considering the fact that the vast majority of athletes do not make it to the pros, many athletes often find themselves scrambling to figure out what’s next.
In this episode special guest Leah Howard talks about some of the mental health issues today’s athletes are facing. Some athletes deal with eating disorders while others may experience anxiety or depression. As athletes many of us have to deal with the pressure of overcoming injuries. Some athletes have anxiety as it relates to career transition.

Athletes grow accustomed to receiving special treatment because of their physical talents. This can make the transition into life after sport extremely difficult. Although many athletes feel as if they have lost a huge part of their identity it is important to reflect on your career and the lessons you learned that can assist you as you prepare to win championships in life!

On a scale of 1-10 how prepared were you for life after sport? When we are locked in on our sport it is sometimes all that matters to us. However, we have to realize that at some point our sport will come to an end and we will have to be prepared for something totally different.

As athletes we often put so much stock into our athletic identity that once our playing days comes to an end we feel as if we cease to exist. So many athletes have issues even believing that there is life after the game.

We have turnover in every industry but in the realm of competitive athletics the shakeout is athletic turnover. You constantly have athletes coming in and out of the athletic industry. As an athlete every single one of us will be a product of the shakeout at some point in time.

Being an elite athlete can be a gift and a curse. We have to have laser vision. In order to make it to the college or professional ranks you have to be locked in. Often times we don’t put enough energy and effort into preparing for life after sport.
Once we enter life after sports we have to play catch up to other individuals who didn’t have basketball or football as their primary identity. When its time to transition out we often haven’t taken the time to assess what else we are good at. The game doesn’t last forever but we view it as if it does. At some point the love affair comes to an end. Will you be prepared?

As athletes we are trained to never show any weakness. We are taught that if we show any emotion our competitor will take advantage of us. We grow accustomed to being super heroes on stage but once ball is over many athletes find themselves alone and depressed. Because of our pride and our beliefs many former athletes refuse to ask for the help they need to figure out what’s next.
It is important for athletes to re-establish their identity once their playing days come to an end. For many of us being an athlete is our primary identity. It’s how we see ourselves and it’s how others see us.

In this episode featuring Lee Rubin we discuss a number of topics that will help athletes at every level as they navigate life after sport. As athletes we have the ability to thrive under pressure but we are often ill equipped to recognize and articulate the soft skills we have that will allow us to be assets to various organizations.
As athletes navigate life and attempt to figure out next steps its important to pay attention to the things people constantly compliment you on. Those compliments reveal your gifts and talents that could very well lead you to discovering what could possibly be your next craft.

If you look at a track and field team you will see a group of different people who all bring different gifts to the team. The throwers are usually larger in stature and stronger. The pole vaulters typically don’t have that same strength and size. If a thrower tried to compete in the pole volt it would probably put them at a disadvantage based on their body type.
All of us have innate talents and skills that allow us to do certain things well. We mess up when we try to copy the next person instead of being true to ourselves. We have to figure out were to operate and how to maximize our gifts. When we play our role not just in sports but in life, everyone wins.

When we walk away from our sport we often feel as if we have lost a huge part of ourselves. We tend to feel as is we have lost our purpose once our sport no longer defines us.
As athletes its seems counter intuitive but it is through slowing down that we notice more. We have to seek out ways to find balance especially in today’s hyper connected society. We don’t give ourselves an opportunity to stop and pay attention.
Mindfulness practices like yoga and meditation can prove to be extremely beneficial to former athletes as we seek to find some sense of balance.

As athletes we all have similar dreams coming up. We envisioned ourselves playing for our favorite professional or collegiate teams. Because we were so focused on our sport we didn’t adequately prepare for the next chapter of life.
As we begin to navigate next steps we lose our “access card” in a sense. For so long we received special privileges because we were athletes. As we navigate new arenas we find ourselves in unfamiliar territory where people simply don’t care about what we accomplished on the field or on the court.

Hoop Juice is a recruiting service designed to help women’s basketball players of all levels find a place to play basketball and continue their education.
As former athletes it can be hard to figure out who you want to be and what you want to be as your life has revolved around your sport for years. You have to get uncomfortable and put yourself in situations that will allow you to find other things that may interest you.

This is an episode unlike any other. We talk about the intersection between social work and sports. Social workers are advocates and activists who can help athletes in a variety of ways.
Social workers help people who experience everyday problems and they help people who are in crisis. Social workers can help athletes navigate life events so that they can be the best people they can be. Social workers need a seat at the table along with sports psychologists in order to give our athletes the holistic development they need.
In this episode we also talk about the plethora of issues our black student-athletes face from a social workers perspective. Many black student-athletes come from challenging backgrounds where they were raised in one parent or no parent homes. Some deal with bouts of homelessness while others have to face gun violence. Somehow in spite of their circumstances they find their way onto a college campus. In many instances they are unprepared for the coursework but it is difficult for them to find someone who looks like them and can truly understand who they are and where they come from.

“We play twenty plus games a year. Every third night we are either going to experience success or failure and that’s a tough way to live.”
-Khadija Head
As athletes we often tie our entire identity to gravity. If the ball goes in we are a success. If the ball doesn’t go in we failed. At some point we have to be intentional about understanding that we are more than our sport.
Whenever you unveil a new layer of yourself that has nothing to do with your sport take the time to explore it. It is so important to create margin in your life. By doing that you will begin to see that your sport is just a small portion of who you are as an athlete or a coach.

After several failed dating experiences Amanda McGrew decided to become the solution instead of simply complaining about the problem. With all of the niche dating apps for Christians, Vegans, Farmers, and other groups of people Amanda decided she needed to create a dating app for athletes. Athletes have an ability to connect with other athletes in a way that is rare.
Part of the struggle as we transition out of sport is finding a new place to add value. It is so important to identify your tribe and find a group of people you can serve.
More often than not our sport makes up a huge part of our identity. Many of us are aware that we could be good at something else but fear of the unknown keeps many athletes from exploring and truly tapping into other areas. It is so important to find new things to celebrate and explore. No one wants to be the 35 year old former athlete constantly talking about how they made the All Conference team their junior year of college.
Take the time to ask yourself if you have other passions and things you could be great at. Take the time to tap into a creative side of you that many of us never take the time to explore.
As an athlete it is important to understand that your commitment to the grind is what separates you. You may not want to sit in study hall on Sunday night but you do it anyway. You may not want to go to the dining hall as soon as they open but that’s the only time you can go. You may not want to endure a two hour film session after a 4 hour practice but you do it anyway. Playing four years of collegiate sports is a test of your will. If you can endure that and thrive you can truly accomplish anything you set your mind to. Most athletes don’t truly value the skill set they gained until it’s over.

The truth is that most athletes don’t envision their careers being over at 22 or even 25 years old. Often times we go to college to play sports and we aren’t necessarily serious about leveraging the opportunity to get a quality education that will allow us to jump-start our career.
It can be extremely difficult to cope with the fact that your sport is over and it is not unusual to experience some levels of anxiety or depression. At times we don’t want to even be around the sport we once loved simply because it is too painful. Many former athletes turn to drugs and alcohol in an effort to medicate themselves and numb the pain and avoid the fact that it’s really over.
As athletes we create this persona. Many of us have nicknames and we literally transform into our alter ego on the court or field. Unfortunately many of us don’t take the time to get to know ourselves outside of our sport.
We talk about this and so much more on this week’s episode.

“Basketball is what I used to do, not who I am.”
As athletes we tend to forget to remind ourselves that life is much bigger than our sport. Many times athletes spend 20 or more years dedicated to their sport and if you aren’t intentional about planning next steps the transition can seem overwhelming.
One of the keys to success is to be passionate about what you do. However, if you can become knowledgeable within your sphere of influence and combine that with your passion those two things will allow you to experience success on another level.

Sometimes it takes former athletes a while to realize that our playing days are really over. In this week’s episode former softball player Ashley Facio describes what it felt like once the letters HR no longer stood for home run but human resources.
Playing sports allows us to understand the importance of sacrifice. Ashley talks about the fact that in softball many times you will step up to the plate and bunt just so that your teammate can move forward.

As athletes we go from literally having an entire army of people to support us to being on our own literally overnight. It is extremely difficult for athletes who are often viewed as super human to share their insecurities and doubts. Thankfully there are more and more people willing to come forward and share their story in hopes of helping other athletes successfully navigate the transition.
One thing to keep in mind as you transition is that you need to find new creative outlets. Athletes are artists. Having the ability to contort your body is a form of art. Once sport ends we lose that outlet and we need to replace it. Athletes have a creative nature and it’s hard to turn it off once you stop playing. We have to figure out how to move that energy into a different direction.

Within the black community there is an elevated social status tied to athletics that many of us cling to. Sports allow us to escape as we get a certain sense of freedom on the playing field. So many African Americans view athletics as the only means to financial freedom. Once we realize that we will not obtain our ultimate goal of playing professionally it can be extremely difficult to let go and step away from our sport.

No matter what career field you decide to enter it is so important to find your unique niche. You need to be the mad scientist at whatever you are bringing to the table. You have to see yourself as a unique specialist. In order to stand out you have to be like the Aunt who is bringing her signature mac and cheese to the family function. You are not valuable until you perfect what makes you different. Find you lane. Perfect it. Be obsessed with it. When people look at you then need to know exactly what you can bring to the table. Make sure no one in the country knows more about that thing than you. When someone is looking to hire someone within a specific niche they should look to you as a no brainer to fill the position.

Life after sport can be extremely frustrating, as the rules that apply to our game don’t always get us the same results in life. If we want to become better shooters we get more shots up. If we want to become better ball handlers we work on tons of ball handling drills. However, as we navigate media, corporate, or other arenas we come to realize that although we may put in the work we may not always be given the opportunity that we believe we deserve.
As we navigate life it is important to understand the power of the pause. As kids we focus on making the varsity team. In high school we obsess over which college we will play for. We are always focused on what’s next. In order to uncover your gifts and realize what comes to you naturally we have to take the time to pause and reflect. Our coaches force us to pause and study film. Once we no longer have our coaches in our ear we have to have the discipline to study “film” on our own and make the necessary corrections.

This week’s episode goes from 0-60 in about .002 seconds as special guest Matt Mounier answers the million dollar question…
If we all know that less than 2% of collegiate student-athletes will play professional sports why don’t we hear the stories of the other 98%?
Many athletes are under the impression that everything will be easy once they are done playing sports. They believe that companies will desire to hire them just because they are former athletes. Often times the transition is more difficult than athletes envision.
Matt also brought up another great point in which he mentioned a survey. The survey was taken by male football and basketball players at NCAA division one, two, and three institutions. 66% of the athletes surveyed believed they would play professional sports. Matt posed a great question by asking what happens when reality slaps you in the face?

As athletes we must realize that when our playing career comes to an end we are not just turning another chapter. We are literally starting on another book. The great part is that we get to decide what we will write on page one of this new journey.
It’s important to develop a diverse portfolio. As athletes we put all of our eggs in one basket knowing that at some point we will have to transition into the next stage of life. We discuss this and so much more in this week’s episode.

As athletes we have to be honest with ourselves. In the midst trying to balance a chaotic schedule of practice, travel, and class we have to find time to pause. We have to ask ourselves what we can truly see ourselves doing. There are tons of amazing professions but you have to find the best fit for you.
It is also important to define what true winning means for you. You do not want to miss this episode featuring former pro turned coach Josh Cooperwood.

As athletes we go to war with our teammates. Sometimes one of the hardest parts of stepping away from our sport is not having the same relationship with our teammates anymore.
One of the greatest yet often overlooked things we take away from our sport is the ability to be patient. Patience is a skill that will serve us well long after the ball stops bouncing.

As athletes we have so much more to offer than what we do on the field or court and it is so important that we find our voice and use our platform.
While the majority of the students on campus are trying to figure out who they are outside of their parental sphere, athletes already come in with a label. As athletes we have to figure out who we truly are because the sport stops. So many of us are lost when the ball stops.

In many cases the sport we love and dedicate the first 20 years of our lives to is often taken from us in an instant. The end of our playing career could come as a result of an injury or being cut by a professional team. For some athletes this leads to a deep dark depression. Some athletes turn to alcohol and pills to numb the pain.
There are so many athletes suffering alone in silence. The good news is that there is light at the end of the tunnel. You can figure it out and you can bounce back. Sets For Life is designed to tell the untold stories of former athletes. You do not want to miss this episode featuring special guest Leo Sullivan.

As athletes we can gain a false perception of what it truly takes to obtain certain luxuries in life. We grow accustomed to chartered flights, five star hotels, and catered meals. Once our playing days come to an end we have to figure out where we fit in society and what we can do to provide for ourselves.
Many athletes struggle with the transition out simply because they never prepared for it. It is so important to feed your mind with things outside of your sport.
You must come to grips with the fact that you will have to start over. You may be the senior and the leader on your team but a few months later you could find yourself on a corporate job where you have less experience than all of your coworkers. In a sense you will be a “rookie” all over again. There is nothing wrong with starting over. It is simply a part of the process.
