Join us as we continue in our study of James 2:14-26 as we get a clear understanding for how to know we are truly members of God’s people.
We are in our fifth message in the Dirty Theology, James, series. Join us as we study James 2:1-13, learning that God’s people are called to relate to one another the way God relates to us.
We are in our third message in the Dirty Theology, James, series. Hear Pastor Evan Snyder as he teaches through James 1:19-27.
Join us as we study Psalm 2. Psalm 2 reminds us that the world rebelling against God and God's people is not a new occurrence. Just as David did, we can meditate on the promises of God and be reminded that his kingdom alone will last forever.
Join us as we study Psalm 1. Psalm 1 acts as a guide to the purpose of the Psalter and an invitation to experience the delight that comes when we meditate on the Word of God.
For our final week in our FORMED series, we study Acts 2 among many other passages to understand how Jesus calls His church to live the Christian life together.Reflection Questions:
How have you typically defined Christlike character and endurance for yourself? How would it make you feel if a friend… …asked you to read the Bible with them once a week?…asked you to help watch their kids so they could go on a date or get some rest?…wanted to talk about faith more because they were struggling with doubt?…confessed sin to you and wanted some accountability?…invited you over for dinner to hang out?…called you to share something they read in Scripture that really encouraged them? What do you assume your friends feel whenever you think about calling them to ask for help? Why do you think we are so programmed to manage as much of life and faith as possible on our own?Read Acts 2:42-47.
How do you envision the way this church lives life together? What practical things could we as a church do to better live by the example of the early church in Acts 2? Why is self-reliance antithetical to the gospel?
For our ninth week in our FORMED series, we study Ezekiel 36 among many other passages to understand the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives.Reflection Questions:1. Read Ezekiel 36:22-28, Jeremiah 31:33, and John 14:26. What is God’s role in our growth and sanctification?2. Review 1 Thessalonians 5:16-21, Isaiah 63:10, Acts 7:51, Ephesians 4:29-32, 1 Corinthian 12:3, and Jude 19. What does it seem the Spirit is trying to do in us and how do we fight against that?3. Review Acts 1:8, 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, Matthew 10:19, and Romans 8:26-27. In what ways does the Spirit empower us?4. How do you feel the Spirit has gifted you for ministry?5. One way we can resist the Holy Spirit is through disregarding God’s Word - do you know of anything in God’s Word that you feel tempted to ignore?6. One way we can resist the Holy Spirit is through being unteachable. Who in your life has permission to challenge, exhort, teach, or even rebuke you? How have you responded to this in the past?7. One way we can resist the Holy Spirit is through being unkind. God is a gracious, patient, and gentle God and He calls His people to display the same character. Why do you think unkindness is a way of quenching the work of the Spirit in us?8. Read Philippians 1:6 & Hebrews 12:7-11. Why is God a good Father through His discipline? Why is this good news that God will complete His work of sanctification in us, even if we resist?
We continue in our FORMED series and study Ephesians 4 and 2 Corinthians 5 to understand WHY it is critical that Christlike Character be formed in us.Reflection Questions:1. Christlike Character is when our “inner being is at rest under the compassion and Lordship of Christ.” What is the inner being?2. What do you think it means to be at rest under the compassion of Christ?3. What do you think it means to be at rest under the Lordship of Christ?4. What does it look like to accept the compassion of Christ but not His Lordship? Or to accept the Lordship of Christ but not His compassion?5. How would you describe the state of your inner being? Where is Christ molding, shaping, and challenging you? Do you give time to reflect on your inner being?6. Ask those closest to you about their thoughts on the state of your inner being. Do they see you as someone who is at rest under the compassion and Lordship of Christ?7. What does it mean to minister the compassion and Lordship of Christ to others and why is it crucial that our inner being be at rest in these things in order to minister them to others?8. Where has God called you to be a minister specifically? What does it specifically look like to minister the compassion and Lordship of Christ in these spaces?
Noah Joyner, the President and Founder of the Hispaniola Institute of Theology (HIT), visits us to share about their work in the Dominican Republic and take us through a similar workshop they teach their students. Grace Hill Church has been a partner with HIT for the last five years.
We study Matthew 9 to learn about the compassion that God has shown us and the compassion He calls His people to show the world as ministers of the New Covenant. Reflection Questions:
Read Luke 14:16-24 and Luke 15:11-32. Using these parables from Jesus, compare and contrast the Old Covenant with the New Covenant. Try to be as detailed as possible. What is God’s role in each? What is the role of God’s people in each? In Matthew 9, why are Jesus’ actions incompatible with the Old Covenant thinking of the Pharisees? What does Jesus mean that His blood inaugurates a New Covenant when He serves the Last Supper? How would you describe New Covenant Compassion? What does Jesus’ example show us? What are the prerequisites for New Covenant Compassion? Do you find that you have this kind of compassion toward the lost, the poor, the oppressed, and the broken? Maybe some, but not all? Does New Covenant Compassion make your uncomfortable or uneasy? Describe what it makes you feel. Can you remember a time where you developed compassion for someone after you learned their story? In what ways can you begin to daily remind yourself of the compassion that God has shown you?
This morning, we study Hebrew 4:9-10 to learn about the rest that God is inviting us into from the stress and anxiety that we experience in this life.
We continue in our series FORMED. We study John 10 and learn about what it means to walk closely with Jesus.Reflection Questions
How have you wrestled with discerning the “will of God” in the past? What decisions were you trying to make? What was that experience like?Do you more naturally view Jesus as a shepherd who is with you at all times or a distant owner who expects you to perform with little help or guidance? We primarily hear God’s voice in the mundane and not the extraordinary.
In what ways do you seek to hear God’s voice - through coincidence, dreams, or major life events?Do you tend to commune with God through being with other people or through solitude? Why?What would it look like to bring more regularity and balance to these spiritual disciplines?Joy is not found in worldly gain but in God.
How would you describe your “promised land” - the place or circumstance that you have been waiting on and are convinced will bring you rest and joy?Would you take that promised land without God?Why is it true that our promised land is wherever God is?The Will of God is not a mystery of the future but a reality in the present.
How would you describe your current life circumstances? How does it make you feel that your in the middle of God’s will right now? What would it look like to walk closely with Jesus in the midst of these circumstances right now?
Pastor Evan Snyder continues in our study of James - James 1:5-8. Does anyone lack wisdom? God tells us to ask him - he gives generously! Wisdom begins with trusting the Lord.
We continue our 10-week discipleship journey called FORMED. We study Lamentations 3 among other passages to learn how the Gospel not only provides forgiveness from our sins but also provides healing from the ways that we have been sinned against. Reflection Questions: Read Genesis 2:25-3:8.
Why do you think Adam and Eve wanted to cover their nakedness when they first sinned? Why were they afraid of God? Why were they afraid of one another?Do you feel uncomfortable talking about the ways in which you have been wounded and hurt through life? If so, why? When doing self-examination and in partnering with God in your sanctification, why is the question: “What’s wrong with me?” not enough? Why must we also be curious about the question: “What happened to me?”In what ways do our wounds in life shape our character? Be specific.Read Lamentations 3:1-26.
How does this prayer make you feel? Do you feel permission to pray similar prayers to God?What present struggles do you have that might be connected to ways in which you have been sinned against in the past?In what ways have you covered yourself up with the fig leaves? Have you shared this with a trusted person? What do you think healing looks like from this wound? What do you think it looks like to take real responsibility for the ways in which this has shaped your character? Is your local church a safe place for you to invite others in on a healing and repentance process?
We continue our 10-week discipleship journey called FORMED. We study Psalm 51 and consider that the mark of a mature follower of Jesus is we know we’re complicit in the brokenness of this world, we’re not defensive, and we’re quick to repent. Reflection Questions:
Read Genesis 3:1-13 & Romans 1:21-22, 24-25.
In what ways did Adam and Eve think they were being wise? How was it, in reality, foolish? Take some time to consider your own story. As you reflect, in what ways do you relate with Adam and Eve and have made similar choices?
Read Psalm 51.
In what ways does David seek to explain his sin, defend his actions, or clarify his true intent? What does David ask God to do in this prayer? What does it mean that God desires a broken and contrite heart over our offerings (v.16-17)? The mark of a mature follower of Jesus is we know we’re complicit in the brokenness of this world, we’re not defensive, and we’re quick to repent.
Where do you notice defensiveness in yourself? What happens in your body when this happens? How do others experience you when this happens? (Maybe ask a few people who are close to you.) How does the Gospel make it safe for us to practice self-awareness? What does it look like to practice self-awareness? What does it look like to show grace to one another and minister the Gospel to one another as we all grow in letting our defenses down as God forms us into something new?
We begin a study through the book of James. James lays out practical wisdom for followers of Jesus to live by. Life is hard and following Jesus can be messy business but there is hope for living in a broken world.
We continue a new 10-week sermon series learning about how Christlike character is formed in us and what it means to live life following Jesus. This morning, we study 2 Timothy 3-4 to learn how character is anchored in God's Word. This series is designed to be a discipleship tool so the people of the church can help each other grow in Christlikeness. The reflection questions below can be used to specifically apply what we are learning to your life. These questions are meant to be asked and answered in a community setting such as a small group or one-on-one.REFLECTION QUESTIONS:
We begin a new 10-week sermon series learning about how Christlike character is formed in us and what it means to live life following Jesus. This morning, we study Ephesians 2 to learn how character flows from our identity.
This series is designed to be a discipleship tool so the people of the church can help each other grow in Christlikeness. The reflection questions below can be used to specifically apply what we are learning to your life. These questions are meant to be asked and answered in a community setting such as a small group or one-on-one.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS:
If you have been following Jesus for more than a few years, in what ways have you seen God form Christlike character in you? Ask your spouse, a close friend, coworker, or family member - how do they describe the ways in which your character has changed since following Jesus? Would they affirm that some or all of the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) are evident and/or growing in you?
If you are new in your walk with Jesus, what kind of character do you hope that God forms in you? What do you imagine as you read Jeremiah 18:1-6? Which fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) do you believe might be lacking in your character?
Review Ephesians 2:1-10.
-What words are used to describe a person prior to God’s intervention in their life through Christ?
-What verbs are used to describe God’s intervention in someone’s life?
-What is God’s motivation for doing these things?
-What must a person do to “be saved” according to this passage?
In reference to Ephesians 2:1-10, can you describe some specific ways you would expect a person's character to change as a result of their understanding of God's actions and grace? Be specific and thorough.
Review Ephesians 2:19-22, Galatians 5:22-23, and John 13:34-35.
-Why must we follow Jesus as a community and not individually for God to form Christlike character in us?
-What character formation opportunities might be missed if we seek to follow Jesus alone and don’t participate in a committed community of Jesus followers?
We finish our study in 1 Thessalonians by studying 1 Thessalonians 5:12-24 together. Paul is going to give us a vision for how the church should operate and how each and every person is INDISPENSABLE to that vision.
