The record was 1-250, the one being in 2018 when Maryland-Baltimore County were the first 15 seed to knock out the then overall Number 1 seed in Virginia. On Friday night March 17 at the East Regional in Columbus, Ohio saw more history. The FDU Knights were quicker, they were more aggressive, and completely shut down Zach Edey of Purdue for the last 9 minutes. The historic upset with a final score of 63-58 will be remembered forever, as the Retrievers are no longer alone.

With the Super Bowl behind us, I want to welcome all of you bandwagon (aka the casual) fans who only follow college basketball in March.

And there has been plenty of news besides the hiring of Charlie Baker as the next NCAA President. Three schools have been playing musical chairs on who will be the overall number 1 seed in less than a month before the draw is released.

When this blog was published, Alabama climbed to Number 1 in the polls for the first time since 2003. For a time, Houston and Purdue have also claimed the top spot. Conversely, the gradual slides of bluebloods Kentucky and North Carolina have the rest of the college world on notice.

The first part of this podcast is dedicated to everyone who survived all of the flooding and those frightening mudslides in Los Angeles and especially in the collar counties surrounding San Francisco. Very little news on Tuesday, except that the Pac-12 mentioned on Monday that their overall TV package may not be as much in terms of overall dollars as either the SEC or the Big Ten. The possibly of moving most of their basketball games to Amazon might be gaining some steam. ESPN however still wants to do their popular "Pac-12 After Dark" series, especially during football season, which I totally get.

This news is according to John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal website.

Remember that several conferences will have hundreds of new games to look forward to, starting with Loyola (Chicago) playing in the Atlantic 10. The school that replaced the Ramblers in the Missouri Valley is the University of Illinois-Chicago aka simply UIC. The Flames join longtime Ohio Valley foes in Murray State and Belmont in what promises to be one crazy edition of "Arch Madness" when it happens in St. Louis from March 2-5, 2023. Please look at my Season Preview blog to see all of the conference realignments for easy reference.

I close out this short pod by wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and the best of holiday wishes for 2023.

Stay safe, everyone--especially with that really huge blizzard that will be paralyzing 28 states just in time for Christmas Eve. I hope to be back shortly after the New Year's holiday weekend.

A day very few people thought would never happen in April 2021 finally came true on Tuesday night.  This is truly a pinch-me moment, as Dr. Mark Emmert--the ultimate jerk outside of former President Donald J. Trump will finally leave behind one of the worst run organizations in United States, let alone world history as president of the NCAA.

More details on why this is such a happy moment for all administrators, athletic directors, and the many thousands of student-athletes are included in this special blog:

https://fortyminutesofhoopsfun.wordpress.com/2022/04/27/huge-news-as-ncaa-president-dr-mark-emmert-to-step-down-no-later-than-june-20-2023/?fbclid=IwAR1fVRQO8cO6ZeRaeHbNVRKloMzBTeWAuKqZVatVCz1ZkwetxLRTMBA4HGo

Along with the 9-0 Supreme Court decision in June 2021 ushering the Wild West with NIL, this announcement signals a seismic shift in the overall collegiate sports model.  Regardless what you think the NCAA should be representing in the future, be very thankful that a cool breath of very fresh air has arrived.  Like Kool & The Gang sang in 1981, "Celebrate good times, come on."

WOW! Is your heart still beating after this ultimate thrill ride? If you did, consider yourselves lucky.

Go ahead and breathe out a slow exhale, ladies and gentlemen.

If you read in my blog, the second semifinal game was going to be 10,000 times bigger than any Duke/North Carolina game, or pick your favorite sports rivalry--the two trump cards UNC will have forever in Chapel Hill will beating Coach K in his final game on the bench at Cameron Indoor Stadium and this all-time thriller by a final score of 81-77

Still, proper context is needed here:

What Mike Krzyzewski did for 47 years and with Duke since 1980 will never be duplicated or surpassed again.

1,202 wins will stand forever, F-O-R-E-V-E-R!!!! 13 Final Four appearances, where some including myself thought John Wooden's record of 12 between 1964 to 1975 would never be broken--but that's what they say, right?

For 2 hours and 22 minutes on Saturday night, the second of April, in the year Two Thousand and Twenty Two at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana--it will be the day nobody will NEVER forget. For the Tar Heels to do what they did required every ounce of strength, durability (even when double-double machine Armando Bacot injuring himself late in the game before ultimately fouling out.)

I will have the blog in my show notes as soon as I can. Breathe slowly, people. Come back down to Earth.

Seeing all of those lead changes and ties definitely felt like the first time when Muhammad Ali met Joe Frazier...that type of electric atmosphere. Above all, this night will be remembered like I said earlier in the week:

Wasn't that fun, ladies and gentlemen? It sure was.

When the brackets came out, there was little chance that the nastiest rivals ever to play college basketball were going to meet.

That is, until the regional finals when Duke beat up Arkansas at the West Regional in San Francisco. The following day, North Carolina squashed the Cinderella dreams of the first Number 15 seed to reach the Elite Eight in tiny St. Peter's at the East Regional in Philadelphia.

And so, the 258th all-time meeting between the state school and the private, elitist school separated by only eight miles will clash on college basketball's biggest stage.

Think of the other huge rivalries in sports: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers; Chicago Bears vs. Green Bay Packers, Boston Celtics vs. Los Angeles Lakers. If you are talking college football, you have Ohio State vs. Michigan, USC vs. Notre Dame, Auburn vs. Alabama, and in recent years with Alabama vs. Georgia.

Of course, there is that other vicious rivalry featuring pure animosity every December when Kentucky battles Louisville. Most of that is usually one sided, and when they collided at the 2012 Final Four--the fans liquored up a storm on Bourbon Street, and more of the same was expected this week way down yonder in New Orleans.

Saturday night, April 2, 2022 is going to be ten thousand times bigger than that. All week, it has been 24/7/365 chatter on sports talk radio, Twitter, and YouTube. Although my podcast sets up as a short primer, please tap on your phone or click on the link below for those who have either a desktop or a laptop to read my comprehensive Final Four preview.

And yes, I did touch on a bit of the first semifinal between Kansas and Villanova, but there isn't too much to talk about there.

Enjoy, and please leave some comments before the approximate 8:50 p.m. Eastern time tip-off Saturday night on TBS:

Welcome to Part One of my Selection Sunday Special Edition of Big Z College Hoops Central.

These were my initial reactions to the draw as it was revealed live on CBS.  If the audio was barely audible, my phone was a few feet away from the speakers, so you might have to turn the volume up just in case.  Overall, the Selection Committee did a great job and boy did the Mountain West and West Coast Conferences impress with 7 teams total making it in. Say what you want about the Big Ten leading the way with 9 schools, but along with the Big 12 had the strongest metrics all season.  A deeper drive into the brackets will be provided later on Sunday night.

Welcome to Bracketology 101.  Topics covered include what AQ’s and at-large teams are, what is a bid thief, and how the seeding and finally the brackets are in their final form that we see the second Sunday in March, aka “Selection Sunday” on CBS.

My objective is for all fans, new and old to gain a deep appreciation of how men's college basketball has taken a life of its own since 1979.  Also, please beware of the bubbles, they might burst when you least expect them--usually in a period of 12 days. In normal times, I would be welcoming all of the bandwagon fans the day after the Super Bowl.  However, with the Winter Olympics taking place at the same time followed by the punch heard around the world after Wisconsin beat Michigan by double figures, there are major lessons to learn after what Juwan Howard did during the handshake line.  I offered my thoughts in my blogs on Sunday and Monday.  Hopefully, we can all turn the page and start getting ready for the really fun times in March.

As I mentioned, here are the two links with general information on how the 68 teams are discussed, selected, and then finally seeded and settled into the brackets on Selection Sunday.  I look forward to your comments anytime:

The annual Bug 12/SEC Challenge had some good games, but the way UK took out the loudest crowd at any indoor sporting event was impressive to say the least. Also of note, it was the Rick Barnes homecoming tour. He did salute the crowd prior to the game, but Tennessee fell short by a single point. And sorry for the last part of my podcast being cut off, so check out the second and shortest part above. As always, thank you for listening.

Hall of Fame broadcaster Dick Vitale decided on Monday that he needs more rest with his voice and has decided to wait until fall to return. He did all of 3 games, but they were each memorable moments and the fans stood up and cheered. I ask everyone to pray for him and to periodically check both his Twitter and Instagram handles for updates. On the court, the first really Big Monday saw Kansas in a major dogfight with Texas Tech before KU survived in 2 overtimes. Overall, an interesting Monday night and it’s all in my podcast and blog:

Besides the two titanic games with Gonzaga beating UCLA and Duke edging out the Bulldogs in a possible Final Four preview, there were some other noteworthy games during Thanksgiving weekend. Dayton stunning Kansas at the buzzer was a fun game, and how Baylor won in the Bahamas spoke volumes. That and a special anniversary took place on Sunday in this short podcast. The MTE’s are underway, as the Mohegan Sun Casino had a true NCAA tournament feel on Sunday. A few other tourneys in South Carolina and Florida produced some interesting results. That and a brief review of the Maui Jim tournament held in Las Vegas, again due to the COVID-19 virus spreading across Hawaii. Finally, welcome back Dick Vitale to the ESPN airwaves as the top 2 teams in Gonzaga meets UCLA once again late on Tuesday night for those watching in the Eastern and Central time zones. Happy Thanksgiving to all of my online friends in the United States. Please continue to stay safe and healthy.

The NCAA was in the middle of the conference postseason tournaments before a tidal wave of press releases around 80 hours before the draw was to take place in New York. Fast forward 16 months later, and an event with nearly 5 times the athletes is in Tokyo, where Japan is in their forth State of Emergency. I briefly explain in this podcast why I am so angry, shocked, and agree with the Japanese public that the Summer Olympics should be canceled. This is still a public health crisis. If everyone thought the first wave in March 2020 was bad, this Delta variant is packing more punch with very little mercy, especially for those who have not received or had one dose of the J&J vaccine. June 30, 2021 will be remembered as a very happy day. All college student-athletes can finally earn money, no matter what sport they play or what state they are enrolled in. Bottom line ladies and gentlemen, take advantage of several deals with players on Instagram and Twitter. Support your local businesses, because there are many alumni and boosters ready and willing to help market his/her “brand”. Until Congress makes this a national law, this is one extremely bold move where thousands of young people really need as much help as what the market dictates.

A bit of background before I begin, but I had some technical difficulties with the app, so I thought I would try things out via a desktop.  Sure hope my voice came out fine.

Anyways, there was some major news in recent weeks with Gonzaga and Kentucky among such schools landing some big-time recruits.  Also of note, the NCAA has a few days in late June hoping to take a vote on the names, images, and likeness concept (NIL).

Five southern states already have laws in the books that will take effect on July 1, so it could mean that the NCAA could exclude them or they could have an unfair advantage if the NCAA decides to use their typical delaying tactics.  Hopefully, this long overdue change that many millions of student athletes were taken advantage of in not receiving one dime for playing the sport they love will see the light of day.

Tuesday, April 27 was another dark night for all fans of college sports. With Dr. Emmert sticking around for two more years, it is sad seeing someone who is not a proactive leader. With NIL on the horizon and gender equity as hot button topics, Conference commissioners and athletic directors mostly hate him, but a group of university presidents voted unanimously to keep him. It is shocking, but this move did not surprise me at the least.

Coach K of Duke had some rather choice words on Tuesday night. For those who did not hear or see the Zoom press conference, he mentioned about how the conferences are muddling through trying to schedule games, adhere to testing on planes, buses, staying in hotels, and during practices. I came away thinking, 'Are playing the games really necessary?' Considering that case records in the USA are setting new records every day, the facts from frontline workers and important medical officials continue to mention: Wear your mask and keep your distance, especially inside any public place--whether it is at a grocery store, Wal-Mart, Target, shopping mall, or restaurant if your area allows a few people to welcome customers.

As ugly as that sounds, please realize that all of the Power 5 schools have excellent medical facilities. My biggest concern involves some of the mid-majors, especially those in the West that some student-athletes have to take a long drive to find the nearest hospital. With hundreds of games already either canceled or postponed, this unprecedented season is slowly moving along...even with DePaul having not played one game and Tennessee playing once. Xavier on the other hand has played all seven games as of December 9 and are perfect in terms of having negative cases.

My best advice, continue to check out websites like the NCAA and ESPN for all of the latest deals. Of course, also check my blog where I update major cancellations and any important games worth noting at fortyminutesofhoopsfun.wordpress.com.

With several student-athletes catching the coronavirus since football and basketball workouts involving some Big Ten and SEC schools that started in mid June, the virus shows no end in sight. In this podcast, I provide some insights after watching the Monday, June 22, 2020 ABC News program "GMA3 What You Need To Know", hosted by Amy Robach and Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton.

Dr. Ashton spent a good bulk of the first 10 minutes and the last 3 minutes talking about the measures that professional and especially college sports are facing. From daily temperature checks to student-athletes not able to use showers at their practice facilities and trying their best to avoid being outside in closed environments--such as bars, restaurants, hair salons, shopping malls, residence halls, etc.--this is going to get really ugly.

And yet, during the Memorial Day holiday weekend--there they were in the south: Soaking rays on the beach, having pool parties, and sitting less than 6 feet at outdoor restaurants. I am very, very concerned that within 2 weeks, more people are going to catch the virus. But I hope they recover and show very minor symptoms.

If you are thinking about heading out in public, ask yourself these four questions:

What are the risks of going or not going? What are the benefits of going or not going?

Comments are always welcome, and please check out my blog on WordPress for more on this unprecedented time in our history.

What was building up to being the most topsy-turvy NCAA tournaments of all time instead saw the cancellation for the first time in its' history. Not even World War II stopped those students in competing for college basketball's highest achievement. As heartbroken we all are as fans--I cannot stress more than enough with the coronavirus continuing to spread like a tidal wave all over the globe.

Bottom line, ladies and gentlemen--even if we are healthy, we all have to do our part: Wash your hands for 20 seconds at a time, don't touch your face except where you are showering and for the guys when shaving.

Please stay healthy, and most important of all--STAY HOME. The more people can avoid coming in contact with this "invisible enemy", the better off we will be as a society in the long term. Binge watch your favorite shows on Netflix, or be like me and watch NCAA tournament games from past years.

Cook some of your favorite dishes, or better yet--search online for a recipe worth trying. Reorganize your house, or a portion of your house. Play some games. Once things return (hopefully) back to normal, you can take that pile of clothes, toys, etc. to your nearest Goodwill. Even if you have books, vinyl records, DVD's/Blu Ray discs, or even those who still have CD's--I am sure many Half Price Books stores nationwide will be more than happy to help others. Thank you again for enjoying my podcasts. Please tap or click on my link to read of my blogs and I hope to be back again once there is major news to report. Take care.
