The National Sleep Foundation recommends seven to nine hours of sleep per night for adults between 18 and 64 years old, yet more than one-third of adults aren’t getting the recommended sleep and between 10% and 30% of adults struggle with insomnia. A host of studies and reports has linked insufficient sleep to depression, ADHD, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. Back in 2014, the CDC labeled sleep deprivation a public health epidemic— with over 70 million adults suffering from a sleep disorder.

On today’s episode I interviewed sleep and rest expert, Amanda Slinger to explore the topic. Amanda has a medical background and over 20 years of experience working in educating organisations on the critical role that rest and sleep play in optimising individual and collective performance.

Leading her team at SleepSpot, she has built a visionary, science-based Employee Recharge Programme, which is reshaping the landscape of workplace wellbeing by helping organisations nurture a healthy, engaged and happy workforce. Amanda is Founder and Director of three companies across mining, healthcare, and L&D, she has a Bachelor of Science (Nursing), a Graduate Diploma in OHS, a Graduate Certificate in Business Management, is a Certified Sleep Practitioner, a Lead Auditor, a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and is currently studying a Graduate Certificate in Business Psychology.

Mental health remains a pressing issue across industries, but the construction industry stands out in an alarming way. 77% of employees say that they experience burnout at their current job. At best, this means increased sick days and reduced productivity in companies. At worst, this means an increased risk of suicide, with the construction industry having a suicide rate 4.5 times higher than the general public. This is unacceptable.

Sharing your personal story can be a cathartic process, providing relief and healing by validating your experiences and creating a sense of connection and empathy. Whether through spoken words, writing, or other creative outlets, storytelling allows you to confront your demons, make sense of challenges, and build a path towards healing and resilience. It empowers you to rewrite your own narrative, transforming pain into growth and adversity into strength, ultimately contributing to improving your mental well-being.

The construction industry and the trades experience uniquely challenging work conditions such as long hours, job uncertainty, and harsh working environments. This takes a toll on both the mental and physical health of employees, and often leads to unhealthy coping strategies, such as abusing alcohol and drugs to cope with stress. As men, it's often difficult to admit when we need to take a break, and even more difficult to admit when we need support. I've found that having candid conversations goes a long, long way, and I've seen first hand the change that comes from it on more occasions than I can count.

It takes courage to admit that you're struggling, and it opens up a space for others to do the same. Research shows that companies who invest in effective mental health solutions receive $2.18 for every dollar spent. We need to support our blue collar workers. Those who literally build the foundation for our nation. Together we can facilitate change and save lives, one conversation at time.

We live in an era where technology has connected us in more ways than ever before, yet the human connection, the one that truly matters, often eludes us. We find ourselves in a paradoxical situation: amid all the likes, shares, and comments, genuine emotional understanding and empathy can be in short supply. It's as if we've forgotten how to truly connect with each other on a deeply emotional level.

The balance between ambition and being present is a delicate dance that many individuals find themselves navigating in today's fast-paced world. Ambition drives us to set goals, achieve milestones, and reach for new heights, which is undoubtedly a valuable trait. However, the pursuit of ambition can sometimes lead to a state of perpetual striving, where the focus shifts to the future and the next achievement, leaving the present moment neglected.

Being present, on the other hand, involves immersing oneself in the here and now, fully engaging with the current experience. It's about savoring life's small moments, cultivating mindfulness, and finding contentment in the present circumstances. The challenge arises when these two seemingly opposing forces intersect.

Striking a balance between ambition and being present requires a mindful approach. It's about recognizing that while ambition propels us forward, the journey itself is equally valuable. Being present doesn't mean giving up on goals; rather, it involves infusing intention and awareness into each step taken towards those goals.

Mindful ambition involves setting objectives, working diligently towards them, and yet maintaining an awareness of the present moment. It's finding joy in the process and celebrating progress along the way. This balance prevents burnout, nurtures mental well-being, and fosters a sense of fulfillment.

Ultimately, embracing both ambition and presence allows for a more holistic and enriched life. By intertwining these two aspects, individuals can pursue their ambitions with vigor while also cultivating a deeper connection to the richness of life as it unfolds in each moment.

Today’s guest discusses strategies in finding such a balance. Lauren Barirani is a registered clinical counsellor with experience working with children, youth, and adults. She is the founder of Apricott Wellness.

The relationship between financial wellbeing and mental health is a delicate balance that profoundly impacts our lives. Financial struggles can cast shadows of stress and anxiety, while stability can lift our mindset with a sense of security.

This connection is not one-sided. Just as financial challenges can harm mental health, mental health issues can lead to financial missteps, creating a cycle.

Roughly 46 percent of people with debt also have a mental health diagnosis - it is clear we need to do more.

The key lies in embracing a holistic approach that nurtures both aspects. Seeking help for mental health is wise, just as consulting a financial advisor is for money management. True financial wellbeing involves living within your means, setting achievable goals, and understanding that happiness isn't solely tied to wealth.

The intertwining of financial wellbeing and mental health is a crucial aspect of our lives. By tending to both, we can create a balance that resonates with our sense of purpose and builds resilience. It's about empowering yourself to navigate challenges while taking care of your wellbeing beyond monetary measures.

Today’s guests, Eleni Prontzos and Bryn Swayze are focused on helping bridge the gap between financial and mental health. They came into the financial industry wanting to make a meaningful, long-term impact in the lives of Clients and their loved ones. They are dedicated to educating clients while giving comprehensive, up to date financial advice to help you achieve your goals.

There are endless issues surrounding mental health in companies.

When comparing industry rates of mental illness, the construction industry sticks out like a sore thumb. 77% of employees say they have experienced burnout in their current job. At best, mental health issues lead to more sick days and reduce company productivity. At worst, it can lead an increased risk of suicide with the construction industry having a suicide rate 4.5 times higher than the general public. This needs to change.

I am really excited to share we you our first construction industry forum discussion with:

Angelina Pillai: Chief Executive Officer at Association of Consulting Architects

John Toomey: Founder of Wide Awake Wellness

Lisa Davie:Project Engineer at Lendlease

Martin Smith: Group General Manager of Health, Sustainability and Climate at John Holland

We discussed a number of issues, such as the state of mental health in the construction industry, impacts of Covid and the ongoing challenge of improving mental health & wellbeing in the industry.

And finally, A huge thank you to Lendlease for sponsoring this podcast.

I hope you enjoy!

...

This is the 12th episode of the Brick by Brick series. This series was launched due to the positive reaction to the construction series and is proudly sponsored by Lendlease. We will be interviewing a range of people from the industry and will be discussing a range of topics such as the state of mental health in the industry.

Australia loses one construction worker every two days to suicide & more than 20% of the construction industry are shown to have had a mental health condition. These figures are made even more compelling as it is an industry that employs 10% of the working population. We feel this podcast will play an important role in creating conversations and awareness.

Our goal is to change the construction industry, one conversation at time.

...

A huge thank you to our sponsor Lendlease for all of the work they are doing in mental health. They have a holistic approach to health & wellbeing, and continue to grow their focus around mental health. They know that employees are likely to experience higher levels of stress, anxiety and depression if they work in the construction sector. In Australia, construction workers are six times more likely to die by suicide than a workplace incident.

Looking after the physical and mental health of our people is a significant part of the Lendlease culture. In support of this, Lendlease introduced wellbeing leave in 2015 – giving all employees one day every four months to attend to health & wellbeing related needs.

We've been conditioned to believe that strength is all about suppressing emotions, staying stoic, and never showing vulnerability. But what if we challenge that belief and offer a new perspective, giving people, especially men, permission to feel.

Emotion plays a significant role in how we connect with others, how we lead, and how we make choices.

We live in a society that sometimes overemphasizes certain traits based on gender. But true strength, as brilliantly put by Dr. Brene Brown, is the perfect combination of tough and tender. It's about being courageous enough to embrace vulnerability and connect with our emotions. That's what makes us truly powerful.

The following was derived from a TED talk delivered by my next guest, Mike Cameron. Mike has traveled across North America, delivering his powerful message on giving people, especially men, permission to feel. With over two decades of studying the impact of emotions on human behavior, he's a business leader and a sales professional who knows how crucial it is to connect with our feelings.

Mike's journey led him to study the works of experts like Dr. Antonio Demasio, Dr. Travis Bradbury, Dan Goman, and the renowned Dr. Brene Brown, just to name a few. He learned that emotions play a vital role in how we make decisions and connect with one another, both personally and professionally.

But Mike's journey took a tragic turn when he faced the unimaginable loss of his girlfriend, Colleen. In the face of such adversity, he discovered that true strength lies not in suppressing emotions but in embracing vulnerability and learning from our feelings.

Mike urges us to redefine what it means to be a badass, to dismantle the outdated stereotypes, and give ourselves permission to feel and be courageous enough to face our emotions head-on.

You can learn more about Mike here: https://mikecameron.ca/

This is the 8th episode of the Brick by Brick series.

I took a lot out of this conversation. We touched on a number of topics, but perhaps most importantly, we discussed the state of the psychological industry and how individuals can navigate finding the right professional for their needs. This is a very complicated area that we are traditionally not educated on.

“You can’t find what you are looking for, by searching for it. What you seek cannot be found. Peace is unfounded. Grounded in letting go. The flow, falling softly like snow. What does it taste like? Now use your imagination. You can create anything you want. That moment in time. It cannot be unfounded.”

This is a quote from my next guest, Shaun Randall. I really loved this chat and connected with Shaun on many levels. He is authentic and has followed his own path by practicing the art of listening to his deepest self. Shaun's story really encompasses one of my favourite quotes 'Life only makes sense backwards, but must be lived forwards'...I felt this was a fitting name for the episode.

Speak & Share is a Not For Profit Mental Health Organisation who encourages the tough conversations and challenges the stigma associated with mental health. Through a preventative proactive approach, they facilitate school, corporate and sporting club programs, as well as local events to connect community and raise awareness to positively impact mental health awareness.

Speak & Share's founding directors are three best mates who have shared the loudest of laughs and have lent each other a shoulder through the hardest of times. Like a lot of us, they too have experienced the pain of losing a best mate to suicide, a family member to a workplace accident, and enduring the separation of parents. With each others support, they have been able to stand tall through these hard times.

This was one of my favourite Move Your Mind interviews and was a long time in the making!

It was so great to sit in person with Brock in Vancouver and learn about the many journeys he has been on in his 75 years of life. His enthusiasm and mindset is infections and rubs off on everyone he meets. I really took so much out of this interview and am sure you will too!

...

Brock grew up in Vancouver, Canada. His story began as the first person to bicycle around North America (1970, 10,000 miles / 16,000 km) on a journey of self discovery and reflection.

He later completed 2 more epic bicycle rides to raise awareness for a KINDER world… in 2000 (Cycling for Kindness), 18,000 Km & in 2009 (Cycle it Forward), 12,000 Km. Brock is an inspirational speaker the author of 9 books including the ‘Reflections’ series which sold over 100,000 copies. His newest book “The Great Gift…for someone special” has received widespread acclaim.

Some other of his proudest accomplishments include being the founder of the ‘World Kindness Concert’, Co-founder ‘Kindness Rocks’ (Concert in schools to prevent bullying), Founder of ‘One-of-a-Kind Stories’, ‘Clam Chowder for the Soul’, Porridge for the Soul” & Monday Night Music at the Beach (performers sharing music from the heart). His passion is for stories of people who have overcome tough challenges & artists with a positive message.

...

Brock has a documentary coming out on February 26th at the Cinematheque Theatre in Vancouver, so make sure to book a ticket via his website!

We've all got a story, and although different, we're actually more alike than we give ourselves credit for. Most (if not all) of us have experienced pain. Most of us have had some form of trauma in our lives. Most of us have had to overcome something that felt impossible to navigate.

Feeling seen and (un) heard for most of her life, Patricia courageously shares how she was able to navigate a life of mental abandonment, abuse and trauma, and ultimately, find her power and worth within in order to create a new story. She shares her deepest secrets, pitfalls, and triumphs along the way in hopes of inspiring her readers to choose themselves, and realize that they, too, can have it all.

Life took an interesting twist for Ryan in 2014. After the breakdown of a marriage, financial problems and a lifetime of not having the tools to handle negative emotions, he found himself in the depths of drug addiction. He was in a very dark place, using Ice & GHB everyday and running into trouble with the law. However, he was not only able to crawl out of that black hole, but was to become the most peaceful & happy he had ever been. This led him to completely immerse himself in how people end up in emotional pain and how it’s possible for anyone to be free from it.This led him to opening The Centre for Healing (Formerly The Melbourne Centre of Healing), to help people who have found themselves in the pain he once was. He has successfully helped many people in getting past their Addictions & Mental Health issues through his experience, understanding and knowledge.

This is the Twelth episode of our Move Your Mind limited construction series. We will be interviewing a range of people from the industry and having conversations around the state of mental health in the industry.

Australia loses one construction worker every two days to suicide & more than 20% of the construction industry are shown to have had a mental health condition. These figures are made even more compelling as it is an industry that employs 10% of the working population. We feel this podcast will play an important role in creating conversations and awareness.

Carley Baker graduated from Purdue University in 2015 with a Bachelors in Kinesiology. After being a personal trainer for a year, she decided to attend nursing school at Marian University, and graduated in 2017 with her BSN. After passing the NCLEX, Carley moved to Southern California to further her career and obtained her first nursing job working for Mission Hospital in their Medical-Surgical, Trauma, and Ortho unit. Currently, she also works for University of California-Irvine in their Trauma/Neuro unit.

About Operation Happy Nurse:

Our operation officially launched in 2019, but the idea sparked much earlier. We were founded by Shannon McPeek, a neonatal ICU nurse in her fifth year of service. At the start of her career, Shannon deeply suffered from work-related anxiety. It was spirit-crushing, affecting both her personality and health. She felt isolated and didn’t think anyone else could understand her struggles, but this couldn’t have been further from the truth. Many of her colleagues and friends, she learned, were dealing with similar mental health issues. This realization motivated her to kick-start our non-profit community to help the nursing profession battle work-related stress, anxiety and depression together.

This is the Sixth episode of our Move Your Mind limited construction series.

Rotem has been in the construction industry for close to 20 years now – kicking off his career pushing wheelbarrows and then growing the business alongside his father at Cobild. 18 years on, Rotem has quite literally built thousands of relationships for life through the buildings that Cobild has built.

Rotem’s passion for people is second to none. He continues to drive Cobild from strength to strength with the values he lives by and instils in the team, AKA Cobildian’s, who continue to amplify the culture at Cobild.

Focusing only on the controllable's in life, Rotem is a master of mindset and ultimate optimism. With his boundless amounts of energy and enthusiasm, he is quite literally infectious to be around.

Talitha Bateman is an American actress. After making her acting debut in a 2013 episode of the sitcom The Middle, she has starred in the independent drama film So B. It (2016), the science fiction film The 5th Wave (2016), the supernatural horror film Annabelle: Creation (2017), the disaster film Geostorm (2017), the romantic comedy film Love, Simon (2018), and the horror film Countdown (2019). In 2020, Bateman starred in Away (a Netflix original), alongside Hilary Swank.

I really enjoyed this conversation and was super impressed with the level of self awareness Talitha has at such a young age. She has a lot of insight into mental health and how to manage your emotions and she speaks from personal experience.

This is the fifth episode of our Move Your Mind limited construction series. We will be interviewing a range of people from the industry and having conversations around the state of mental health in the industry.

Australia loses one construction worker every two days to suicide & more than 20% of the construction industry are shown to have had a mental health condition. MATES is a charity established in 2008 to reduce the high level of suicide among Australian construction workers. MATES provides suicide prevention through community development programs on sites, and by supporting workers in need through case management and a 24/7 help line. We serve the construction industry in Queensland and Northern Territory, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia, the Energy industry in Queensland and New South Wales, and nationally to the Mining industry. MATES was established in response to a major report on suicide (the ‘AISRAP Report’) within the Queensland Commercial Building and Construction Industry. This report found that suicide rates in the industry were higher than the Australian average for men, and that youth suicide within the industry could be as much as 2.38 times more common than among other young Australian men.

This was a really compelling interview into being true to yourself at all cost. In a world where we are often seeking validation and success, Tom sets an example of removing the noise and listening to your core needs.

Tom Boyd lived the dream of many young Australians. As the 2013 AFL number 1 draft pick, he was marked as a future superstar in his sport. Fame and money were guaranteed, all the more so when he returned home to Melbourne to join the Western Bulldogs on a record-breaking $7 million contract.

But success as a footballer came at a cost Tom wasn't prepared to pay. The intense scrutiny from media and the public added to the enormous expectations he placed upon himself, creating a toxic cycle of insomnia, anxiety and depression. Even being part of the Bulldogs' famous drought-breaking Premiership win in 2016, when Tom arguably played the greatest game of his career, could not fundamentally change the chronic mental health issues he was experiencing.

Tom decided to make one of the bravest calls of his life and walk away from the team he loved, from his hugely lucrative contract, from celebrity and adulation. He did it because he knew he was much more than the sum of these things, and that mental wellbeing was the one essential he could not ignore.

Tom is now a public speaker and mental health advocate and recently released his first book, Nowhere to Hide.

This was one of the most impactful interviews I have had on Move Your Mind. It is the kind of story you would expect to see in a movie. Luke took me on such a journey (as he does through his speaking career and through his books) and spoke with such honesty, rawness and vulnerability. I highly recommend you take the time to have a listen!

Luke uses his "Breathtaking" story to inspire deep, lasting change, and self-awareness, for a wide range of audiences, from primary schools, high schools, businesses, events, and even prisons.

For eight years of his life, Luke was an obese alcoholic, self-confessed bully and thug. On the outside, he looked strong and confident, even happy at times, but on the inside his thoughts would haunt him. He was incredibly scared, depressed, anxious and paranoid. He now regularly speaks and has written books to help others.

Mental Health is a huge issue in the entertainment industry and I always love getting insight from different actors and performers about their experience. I really enjoyed this chat with Taylor Gray covering his recent work and how he maintains balance in an ever changing industry.

Taylor Gray is an American actor, best known for playing Ezra Bridger on the animated television series Star Wars Rebels, and Bucket in the Nickelodeon series Bucket & Skinner's Epic Adventures.

Mental Health education in children is critical to making long term change in society and today's guest is dedicating herself to this cause.

Margo Ward is the founder and CEO of KidsXpress Life. Her vision and inspiration for this world-first program was bestowed on her by the children she worked with as Head of Play Therapy at the Sydney Children’s Hospital. While working predominantly with chronically ill children within Oncology and ICU, Margo saw the opportunity to broaden the scope of creative approaches to therapy with children, and she began to develop a new model for looking at trauma and grief counselling.

In 2005, Margo shared her vision for a unique expressive therapy program with potential investors from the private sector. Margo realised that by uniquely combining music, art, drama and play therapies in a group therapy context, the program would have incredible potential to transform young lives. Investors from across the private & corporate sectors believed in the potential of the program, and so KidsXpress was born. In a short time, Margo established a highly credentialed board (including renowned economist Dr John Hewson as Chair), a talented and passionate team of therapists and sponsors, referral pathways and a robust set of program effectiveness metrics to get the attention of government and other youth support services.

In 2011 Margo was awarded a scholarship to attend the Executive Leadership Program at Stanford University, an experience that has not only underpinned the next stages of expansion of her social impact interests but also opened up opportunities to address societal issues on a broader scale.

Margo’s vision continues to shine through the work of KidsXpress; transforming the lives of hundreds of children, their families and communities through leading expressive therapies.

Addiction is one of the most serious issues we face in society today and we are not nearly educated enough on the many facets of it. It stems further than just drugs and alcohol - many people are addicted to work, exercise, validation & social media...the list goes on. Today's guest talks about her own addiction and how she became sober while using comedy to educate others about these serious issues...

...

Pam Gaslow has designed catalogs for J.Crew, performed stand-up comedy and has even worked as Henri Bendel’s only female security guard...it's safe to say she has had an eventful life. She has written several books covering topics such as her journey from a toxic marijuana addiction and has performed at comedy clubs across the U.S using candor, honesty and wit to educate people about serious issues. The New York-born writer is also a contributor to The Huffington Post, The Good Men Project, The Times of Israel, and Newsbreak. This was one of the most powerful stories I have heard since starting the Move Your Mind Podcast. Kyle Tyrrell is a Lieutenant Colonel turned high performance coach who overcame issues such as PTSD to eventually thrive and find his calling in helping others. He has seen things that most of us will never experience and openly shares his learnings.

At the age of 15 Kyle was awarded the Australian Defence Force Scholarship to become an Army Officer ushering in a 24 year career as a combat commander.

From bombs and bullets on the front line in Iraq, to the war rooms in Army Headquarters and finally to the Board Rooms of Australia, Kyle has been acknowledged as an inspiring and talented leader and strategist.

He holds an MBA, is a Graduate of the AICD Company Directors Course, is a certified coach, and is a Graduate of the Australian Command and Staff College. In the 2007 Queens Honours he was the recipient of the Commendation for Distinguished Service for outstanding command and leadership in war. He left the Army at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Lara Norman Arquero is a young and passionate cook from Ibiza, Spain. She was culinarily mesmerised since she was a toddler, when she would spend most of her time in the kitchen with her mother. She lived in Galicia for a few years, where she found herself truly connected to nature's gifts: the beautiful seafood and the freshest ingredients that the North of Spain has to offer.

Lara cooks with her heart and soul, which she believes are the main ingredients to success. She began to pursue her culinary journey at the age of fourteen. From working in modest cafes, restaurants, bakeries and ice cream parlours, it was a combination of wide eyes, discipline and curiosity that led her to work alongside some of the world's most prestigious chefs and at restaurant venues that she had always admired. Such as The Ritz London, where she joined John Williams’ brigade, Hide restaurant by Ollie Dabbous and the two-Michelin starred Claude Bosi at Bibendum.

Following the current world situation, Lara began working as a private chef for clients across the UK, as well as offering international bespoke services. She teamed up with a bunch of adrenaline junkies, including hardworking Michelin-star trained chefs, bartenders and sommeliers to offer you a ride of the senses through the palate... and so Euphoria was born.

Lara is also an ambassador for the Burnt Chef Project. Launched in May 2019 it was setup with the sole intention of eradicating mental health stigma within hospitality

Michael Anthony is the author of the best-selling book Think Unbroken, as well as a coach, mentor, and educator for adult survivors of child abuse. On a mission to create change in the world, Anthony teaches at Think Unbroken Academy and hosts the “Michael Unbroken” podcast. He spends his time helping other survivors get out of “The Vortex” to become the hero of their own story and take back their lives.

With his mother cutting off his finger at the age of four, Michael Anthony has experienced tremendous amounts of trauma. As a child, Anthony grew up in an abusive household which led to drug and alcohol use by 12 years old, homelessness, and an overall lack of stability. Throughout his teen years, Anthony ran with gangs, used drugs, stole cars, and broke into houses all in order to survive.

“I was leveraging and using my trauma as an excuse to not show up for myself,” Anthony reveals.

By the time he was 20, he was morbidly obese and a workaholic. Anthony reflected on his life and realized that “no matter what, no matter where you are from or how bad your trauma was… there is always potential for what’s next.” It was this pivotal moment that caused him to turn himself around and change the life he was living.

“Acknowledge that bad things have happened to you and accept it, not in that you deserved it but in that it was a reality, and move forward,” Anthony tells the audience.

“Though trauma may be our foundation, it is not our future.”

As one of the UK’s most influential mental health advocates he regularly speaks on BBC, ITV & Channel 5 news. Josh has also spoken in the House of Commons, contributed to mental health policy and even advised the scriptwriting team on Hollyoaks. He has run resilience workshops for village schools and global brands alike. Additionally, he is an ambassador for Nacoa – a national charity supporting people affected by a parent’s drinking.

...

In Josh's words:

It was the beginning of seriously planning my suicide.... December 2019 I’ve just finished delivering my resilience workshop with another global organisation.

Back then I believed that resilience was the ability to keep going no matter what, to avoid any struggle and show up. That ideal drove me to a place where I felt the best thing to do for my children was to take my own life.

Today I have a new idea of resilience. One that is fluid, that allows me to struggle and ask for help. One that allows me to keep my head up and shoulders back in spite of my internal struggles. One that embraces vulnerability and keeps me reachable. One that helps me to understand what I feel, know what I need as a result and be able to communicate that within my activities and relationships.

Rather than driving me to suicide, this idea of resilience has helped to deliver emotional resilience training to village primary schools and global brands alike.

I don’t believe I’m a new person, I’m the same person, with the same emotions. The difference today lies within what I do with the energy of those emotions.

I believe in change...

Greg Louganis is considered the greatest diver in history, having won Four Olympic gold medals in the three-meter and 10-meter diving events. He is also the first man in Olympic history to sweep the diving events in consecutive Olympic Games.

Greg won a record 47 national titles and 13 world championships throughout his diving career and was the first person to receive a perfect score of 10 from all seven judges in an international event.

At the Seoul 1988 Games he suffered a concussion during the preliminary rounds of the three-meter event that almost put an end to his medal hopes. He competed despite the injury, claiming two gold medals and becoming the first man in Olympic history to sweep the diving events in consecutive Olympic Games. After his competitive diving career, Louganis became a LGBTQ+ activist and worked frequently with the Human Rights Campaign to defend the civil liberties of the LGBTQ+ community and those diagnosed with HIV.

I met Greg in Australia while a contestant on a reality TV show called Celebrity Splash and have since stayed in contact. The thing I respect most about Greg is his selflessness and vulnerability - a trait that he has used to help millions of people around the world.
