Local Roots: Mountain Bikes, Craft Beers, and Snowboards: Recent Episodes

Larry Lynch and Brian Davis

Our wives told us we talk too much about bikes. So we started a podcast about all our favorite things. Mountain bikes, beers, snowboarding, and most importantly Michigan. Every week we explore some of our favorite cities in Michigan, the beers they make, the trails they have, or the hills you can shred.

Local Root's Podcast is hosted by Larry Lynch and Brian Davis.

This podcast is perfect for people who love to talk about: Mtb trails Mountain Bikes Snowboarding Michigan's best mountain bike trails Michigan's best breweries Craft beer What's going in Grand Rapids, Mi Devastating stories Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/localroots/support

(Side note, larry's mic was unplugged and it recorded through the computer. Dumb, I know.)

This is absolutely one of our favorite events all year and it hurts to face the reality that this pandemic has brought to the entire mountain bike community. So now what?

I guess there's no need to train anymore, right?

This week we explore some ways to still capture the fun of iceman but on a smaller level.

What's in this episode?

  • Race alternatives

  • What to do if you already registered

  • Comparing nutrition: What makes you ride faster? Are there any solutions to get you through a ride, when you're not really up for a ride?

  • The future of MTB vs Gravel bike technology

  • Can bikes really shift themselves?

  • Sams Club! It rules.

PLUS EXCLUSIVE CONTENT: Larry's ultimate guide to ditching all the BS in your house and living a pure, stress-free life.

We have George, Katie and Craig from Rockford Bike Shop this week! Well, it only took me 2 weeks to find time to edit this one! Wow.. who would have thought I could forget how to edit an IN PERSON podcast?

We had such a fun time recording with the gang at RBS. It felt really good to get out of the house and record a podcast with some super cool, authenticity nice, local business owners.

We can’t thank them enough for keeping the shop open late to set up 5 mics and ramble on for a couple hours about bikes, beers, boards and of course a couple stories about pooping during a race. … Yeah, that happened this week too, I swear it’s not on purpose.

Please fo visit Rockford Bike Shop, and let them know you heard them on Local Roots!

Follow us on the internet.

Sorry for the episode delay! We have an awesome episode we recorded last week with the Rockford Bike Shop gang. However, I am struggling to get all the mics synced up and edited. We had about 5 people for a 2 hour record.

So! We are swapping episodes. This week is now Brian Zajak, our new friend and MTB instructor, while in a couple days I will have the Rockford Bike Shop episode out!

Thanks for being cool and understanding!

Check out more from Brian especially the Cannonsburger,  here:

This week we kick it with our new friend Brian Zajak. Brian is a Grand Rapid's native who has been riding since he was a kid. This week we explore the culture around riding Cannonsburg Ski Area, Brian's exciting multi island race, and of course, emergency poops (again).

It was such a blast recording with Sheyn this week! You might know him on youtube as The Crashing Dad, where he makes some awesome MTB content.

Sheyn is also a proud father who was willing to sit down and give us some valuable parenting advice. As we are learning, it's not easy to balance bike rides, a full time job, a child, a wife and a podcast/youtube channel.

There's also some pretty huge news from Larry this week too...

Hey guys, we are going to postpone this week's episode until Saturday.

Resources as mentioned in this mini episode:

Guide for people looking to be an ALLY. This is a great, all in one resource. Please take a look.

8 can't wait. Please Please Please look at these proposed rules for police. Data proves that together these eight policies can decrease police violence by 72%Michigan bail fund - The Michigan Solidarity Bail Fund is a project to bail out those most in need and those who put themselves at risk fighting for our collective freedom. "There is no shame in admitting when you don't know something or are learning something new. This is a movement that requires continuous education and learning from each other. Racism is ingrained into every aspect of our lives, the government, our policing systems, even ourselves."

We believe that with the small platform we have, it is worth the effort to share some valuable resources to help the #BLM movement. Brian and I are by no means trying to pretend that we know what it is like to be back in this country. We do not have the answers. And, in fact we would encourage you to not even listen to this and instead click the resources we have linked above. We simply, want to share our thoughts, voice our concern, make our support heard, and take a tiny step towards a better world.

Share your stories!

We want to hear your favorite MTB story. If it's good we will play it on the pod! Leave your short stories here: https://anchor.fm/localroots

The one thing that all mountain bikers can relate to is biting off a little more than we can chew. Whether it's getting bonked on an epic new trail and realizing you're only halfway done. Maybe realizing half way through a muddy Iceman that you should have learned how nutrition works. Or, like all of us mid-air, as you realize your bike shouldn't be facing this direction, you think to yourself.... Oh S#!T.

These are those stories.

Another BONUS EPISODE!!!!!

We have seen so many new people join the podcast! We almost doubled our listens last week and we are just too excited!

In all transparency, this episode was recorded before our most recent episode.  Does that make sense? Yikes. Was that even worth mentioning?

This week we dive into an IPA Sour from Speciation Artisan Ales, right here in Comstock Park.

Plus Brian shares his story about getting in fights about Mountain Bikes on facebook marketplace. We have all dealt with people who feel powerful behind a keyboard, so I am sure you all can relate to his situation.

Follow us @localrootspod

Does anyone even read these descriptions. Is it okay that I only spend like 5 minutes writing these. Does anything even exist?

I will buy the first person who dm's us on instagram a $5 gift card if you actually read this far into the description and let me know.

Yup. It's exactly what it sounds like. For the next 3 days we have a digital billboard on US-131 Northbound, right next passed the White Caps. Why do I spend my money this way?

Since this recording I have actually bought two versions! One is very dumb and just says Local Roots... yadda yadda yadda.

The other?

Just our faces. Why? Great question.

Aside from me never paying off my student loans due to terrible life decisions, (like starting a podcast, and buying billboards) we also break down how to treat your sweetie this V-day. Take it from us pros. :)

Last but absolutely not least is our review of Old Nation's M43. One of the all time most iconic NEIPA's here in Mighigan.

Also, I don't condone what that little kid called Brian on the ski hill.

No, we don't really want to fight 3rd graders. But we do wager an interesting thought experiment. Join us as Brian reminisces about if he could beat up the 7-year-old, yellow belted, version of himself and Larry dives into a conspiracy theory about the guy who stocks beer at the Rockford Meijer.

Also, have you watched the XFL yet? What the actual heck is happening out there? Have you seen these logos? Have you seen how wild these names are?  This week's beer is from Rockford Brewing! Brian and Larry rate the newly released Nutter Madness! Is it any good? Plus, we decide where to take our talents for this year's mug club membership!

Enjoy this bonus episode, and keep in mind, we might have tried a few too many beers before we recorded this one.

A big thank you for everyone who has been listening to the podcast! We are fascinated that we have as many listens as we do! You guys are actually insane.

Is a graham cracker a cookie or a cracker?

After we crack this nearly unsolvable conundrum, it's time to dissect two U of M inspired beers.

Big Lake's Haze and Blue. Their potently blueberry flavored Hazy NEIPA

and

North Peak's Hail APA. A Light , maybe even too light pale ale.

Who is going to win the beer to beer showdown?

Will we solve if a graham cracker is actually a cookie, or not?

It's almost worth listening to find out!!!

CHEERS!

We hope to see you soon! Feel free to DM us on instagram for any suggestions! @localrootspod
