It’s always my hope that even if you have a different story that you can hear parts of yourself in the conversations had here, and that you can walk away with tools on how to navigate the not-often-spoken about topics that may be holding you back from living in the present. My mission is to offer you tools, insights and stories to help you on your journey.  But one of those journey’s I have neglected to address – which now seems glaringly obvious – is that of racism. I overlooked this experience most likely because of my privilege as a white person. I am waking up to my role as the “good white liberal”. No one wants to be thought of as racist, but by not speaking up about this topic – is in fact condoning it. So by not speaking about systemic racism I was playing a role in contributing to it.  Here are some resources you may want to look into: Books: White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism Fearing the Black Body by Sabrina Strings Me and White Supremacy: Combat Racism, Change the World, and Become a Good Ancestor  Shows, Movies, […]

What’s your type: Myers Briggs:  Enneagram:  4 Tendencies:  If you had to change careers to something totally different and your education was paid for what would you train to do? What is something that most people assume about you that isn’t true? When do you feel the most like the most confident badass version of YOU? What is one item of clothing that makes you feel YOU? What is something you’ve recently discovered or re-discovered that you really like? What is a part of your daily routine that you are loving right now? I know you feel a deep connection with trees which is so beautiful- tell me about how that’s unfolded for you? What are some lessons you’ve learned from trees? What is a favorite […]

Bri started Little Wandering Soul on Instagram in January 2019 when she was going through a hard time. About her struggles with depression, anxiety, coming out and her life-long journey of learning to love herself. Bri began feeling like she wasn’t alone anymore – she felt encouraged, valued and like she had purpose. It’s been less than a year and she is so grateful for this platform that has given her opportunity, connection, confidence and most importantly, a way to give back to her community.  She […]

The term ‘orthorexia’ was coined in 1998 and means an obsession with proper or ‘healthful’ eating. Although being aware of and concerned with the nutritional quality of the food you eat isn’t a problem in and of itself, people with orthorexia become so fixated on so-called ‘healthy eating’ that they actually damage their own well-being. Without formal diagnostic criteria, it’s difficult to get an estimate on precisely how many people have orthorexia, and whether it’s a stand-alone eating disorder, a type of existing eating disorders like anorexia, or a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Studies have shown that many individuals with orthorexia also have obsessive-compulsive disorder. Today I had the pleasure of chatting with Dr. Soph Mort who is seriously just the coolest. Dr. Soph is a Clinical Psychologist, life coach and yoga teacher. And basically her aim is to make psychology more accessible to people outside of just the therapy room (um yassss!). This means that most of us live in a world where we feel like we can’t ever relax, where we can never just BE. And as a result our world becomes saturated with a looming sense of failure, and a fear of our own emotional experiences. She wants to help people re-learn about their own experience and affirms them in recognizing that their emotions are normal. Today I’m chatting with fellow fitness trainer Jasmine Cruz. I first met her in Nantucket, while visiting my gal pal Georgie Morley (who y’all may remember from episode #73 and #53 here on the pod). I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Jasmine and I hold very similar values when it comes to our approach to training (which is RARE!). Looking back, I was so caught up in my ego when I first began training. I was desperate to prove my worth to clients. Frantic to justify, with measurable data, that I could help people lose the inches and pounds. Fitness was a way to help someone achieve satisfaction with their appearance (a fleeting and never-ending goal). And while the road was paved with good intentions, I didn’t have the capacity to train outside of this mindset. Fortunately, I’ve grown so much since that time, and my approach to training has shifted drastically. So you can imagine my delight when I met Jasmine who shares a similar story. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: Her journey to becoming woke as a personal trainer Her approach to training now vs. in the past The turning point that caused her to shift the way she […]

I’ve had the honor and privilege of witnessing her transform over the past 15 months. This transformation goes far beyond the physical changes you can see from the outside. As she shares in this conversation, she’s experienced a dramatic shift from hating who she saw in the mirror to truly loving herself. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: How she felt called to pursue a new path after losing her father to suicide in 2014 Shifting away from chasing the means to get to an “idealized” end The all consuming nature of chasing an elusive perceived ideal How we attach our identity to the number on the scale How she realized that her weight did not directly correspond to her level of happiness. (feeling unhappy in a smaller body) Love the person that comes to the workout each day Shifting from looking in the mirror and hating herself to LOVING herself She has discovered a new relationship with movement through realizing that she doesn’t have to EARN her worth, because […]

This program empowers young people to reach their full potential by developing media literacy awareness, cultivating individual strengths, building resilience to social pressures that impact body image, and nurturing a positive social environment. Opened her eyes into the subconscious effect of advertising. The myths (appearance ideals) we subscribe to, because of advertising. And how men and women are represented in media. We’ve dug into ‘WHAT’ is going on around us: things like: thoughts we have, feeling disconnected from ourselves, noticing the rules we’ve adopted. So today I want to dig even deeper, and start to unpack the ‘WHY’ – – so today’s episode is a bit different. We’re talking about Trauma. Trauma is derived from the Greek word for “wound,”. And unfortunately almost all of us have experienced some kind of wounding event: Something that hurt your feelings, made you feel minimized, or unsafe. And as you’d probably guess without learning healthy coping skills as children, we often carry these wounds with us into adulthood. They show up as things like anxiety, depression, addictions, perfectionism, eating disorders, OCD, alcoholism etc. All of course in varying degrees – think of it like a spectrum. From my experience there is always a ROOT [a deeper reason] why we do the things we do. Weather we know it or not – – underneath the beliefs & behaviors: we’re all just trying to feel a sense of belonging✨✨, acceptance, enoughness, okayness, safety, and security. We know this. We all have an innate desire to be seen, heard, valued, appreciated, and liked by others. I mean, it’s kinda […]

Without a job, or a place to live, she instinctively followed her intuition: took the leap and trusted that the universe would guide her. She shares about the life changing experience she had during the 3 months she stayed at Hilton Head Health. Side note: I watched her IG stories everyday, while she was at HHH, where she shared a recap of her day. They were seriously some of the most open & thoughtful reflections I’ve come across. She shared the fears she’d faced and the things she’d learned from them. And although I have spoken to a number of non-diet RD’s in this second season of the podcast, I’m always surprised at how each of the conversations take such a different path. We talk about Cara’s experience with disordered eating and how she found her way to freedom. We also focus on: the prevalence of disordered eating in female athletes, the misleading marketing tactics – used by the diet industry – that mask diets/weight-loss, and how we can find an identity in dieting praying on our need to belong & be accepted. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: Cara’s intuitive eating journey The difference between ‘disordered eating’ and an ‘eating disorder’ How elimination diets (like vegetarian or vegan) can mask disordered eating tendencies Her “cheeseburger phase” experiment The guilt she experienced upon starting her intuitive eating journey How being alone can exacerbate emotions when you are feeling triggered The importance of eating food that YOU personally find satiating Health = the controllable behaviors that we can actually influence The importance of our overall lifestyle & the behaviors we embody to our health Eating […]

Julia Datt is Australian born and brought up, and of Indian origin. She found great success as a beauty editor. Craving something more challenging she turned to high-fashion modeling. She went on to work in Mumbai India and was featured s on India’s version of Next Top Model. Julia really challenged the cultural standards of what is to be a model. Traditionally models are expected to be submissive and basically void of personality. Julia was repeatedly told that she “talks to much, thinks too much, and needed to lose weight”. With a great passion for justice and fairness she fought to have influence in a corrupt industry. She asked questions like: “why do I have to be beautiful? Why do I have to walk around like a barbie doll to be liked or accepted?” IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: Growing up she never dieted or exercised, however when she began modeling in her early 20’s she adopted a daily 2-hour intense cardio session and restrictive dieting practices. Her new strict lifestyle regime caused her to experience constant pain & bloating in her stomach (very common side effect of anorexia/over-exercise) She shares various Ayurvedic techniques she discovered to help treat bloating […]

In today’s episode I’m chatting with my good friend Seth Oberst, DPT, CSCS. I’m such a fan of his approach to physical therapy because ultimately he helps people cultivate a deeper awareness of themselves. He educates people on how to regulate their own body so that they may take back control. He strives to help people  feel connected to themselves in the present moment. And in case you didn’t know, Seth is actually a returning guest from season 1 here on the podcast! You can check out the first episode we did here: LPP #3 Connecting With The Present Moment with Seth Oberst   Ever catch yourself clenching your teeth? Unfortunately this is one of my default responses to stress. And I’d like to take a minute to dive a little deeper into this word “stress” because I feel like it gets thrown around a lot. Stress is such an ominous term, and it doesn’t really help us get a handle on identifying the root cause. So I think a more useful approach is: to get curious and more specific about what it is we are feeling. To go back to my teeth clenching. I can pinpoint the moment when I became […]

Anna has a strong desire to change the representation of what recovery looks like x Her diagnosis with MS and the story of her sister’s ED x her experience of being seen as “other”, feeling invisible to others because of her wheelchair (she can relate to others who may feel excluded by societal norms) x When we actively avoid seeing the things that make us uncomfortable, so as not to stare, we are in fact not acknowledging someone. Which is the equivalent of erasing this person from your field of vision – and they can see you doing that x Choosing the path of least resistance which is 1000% acceptance x The false illusion of control, that we are in control of the disorder, when in fact the disorder is controlling us x Tell […]

Hey Pod Squad! In today’s minisode I’m sharing ALL about my most recent experience of overcoming fear! This past weekend I lead a workout at Lululemon here in Greenville. And in full disclosure there were SO many times I wanted to reschedule the event, or not even do it altogether????????‍♀️???? Literally wanted to curl up in a ball and hide…all out of FEAR.???? Fear of not doing a good job. That people would leave disappointed. Fear of not looking the part….But none of that happened! It actually turned out AMAZING✨ And I’m proud to say that I faced these fears (thanks to lots of encouragement from my husband Michael , some confidence-boosting mantras, and power poses). I stood in front of the room. All eyes on me. I had them set an intention and then I lead them through a workout. And as i did my focus shifted. And I realized how much courage it took for every person who decided to be there. To show up.???? Slowly all those fears started to melt away as I began moving. I found my voice. I began connecting with the the room, with the people. I know it may sound clique but I was […]

During our trip I started The Alchemist and I felt like it was speaking to my soul. Every few pages I was underlining something I wanted […]

We stay trapped by our old habits and remain dependent upon others for our survival. The guest’s I’ve had on the Liveng Proof Podcast have recognized their power. They understand how beautiful, capable, strong & independent they are. They are explorers hunting for what feeds their soul. I wanted to kick off today’s intro with a concept I’ve been thinking about lately and that is this idea that we cannot truly take in the view from the top of the mountain, unless we have climbed it ourselves. People can tell us what it looks like, show us pictures, or even footage…but until we have walked the path ourselves, we cannot fully comprehend and appreciate the perspective of that journey. Personally I am a closet autodidactic. I’m always hungry to learn. I strive to take care of myself so that I can best serve those around me. I understand that where I pour my energy is where I will grow. I’m also very aware that there will be setbacks and challenges, but that these are necessary tests: they are how I will grow. And I deeply respect the process. I […]

Ariel Turner with her husband TJ| Instagram @arielhturner Today I’m speaking with the lovely and verbose Ariel Turner. Ariel is a journalist and although she technically works a 9-5 I primarily felt drawn to her because of the distinctiveness of her job. Ariel is a food critic, she’s your real life  Anton Ego: the restaurant critic the food from the movie Ratatouille. I personally had never met anyone who reviews restaurants for a living so I was very intrigued when I met her.    Naturally I went into my conversation with Ariel thinking we would be chatting about writing, journalism, or food? But this conversation took on a life of it’s own. And one I certainly wouldn’t have expected. And I think that’s the thing. With each interview I do, I’m learning that I am a guide. I do not aim to limit potential. Ariel took me off the map in this conversation. We went on tour of her life. This gems in this episode would never have happened if I had “stuck to the plan”. I gave her the space to lead me and share with me things like struggling with postpartum depression, battling suicidal thoughts, getting out of […]

I don’t have to struggle in silence. Carrying the things that weigh me down, as a party of one, holds me back from moving forward. It’s amazing to realize I have a team. People I trust. People who’s love and support lighten my load. This episode is a very special one. It’s a little different than my other episodes. My guest is still an total girl-boss and entrepreneur. Jeni Cain  is the owner of Monkee’s of the West End, a high-end boutique clothing store. But instead of focusing on the journey of her business, we are diving a bit deeper. A business she started out of her 450 square foot studio apartment in New York City. After single handedly launching her business. Ruta found herself in a very curious predicament. As luck would have it Ruta was able to share her product with Oprah through a friend. And sure enough, Oprah selected Ruta’s Ah-ring to be included in Oprah’s favorite things, The O List in The Oprah Magazine. Lisa is the owner of Downtown Yoga Greenville – aptly named as it is located in the heart of downtown Greenville, SC at Studio 17. It’s a beautiful light filled space complete with exposed brick and wood floors. It’s the studio I had been longing to find, but did not discover until January of this year. As a personal trainer I recognized the ideological benefits of yoga…I would take a hot yoga class every now and then. Or jump on the bandwagon when a local studio was offering some kind of discount. But none of the places I tried had any real staying power (not for me at least). I was not pulled to continue going back. They did not have what I was ultimately looking for. I wanted traditional yoga. I wanted to find a place where I could find some inner stillness. I wanted to leave feeling rejuvenated and more centered. She may be young but she has arguably endured more obstacles than most of us face in our entire lifetime. I’ve actually first met Martha back when I was helping tutor her for her SAT’s – so it’s a bit nostalgic for me because now she’s starting the next chapter as she is preparing to graduate college. A little over 3 years ago, during Martha’s freshman year at  USC she was struck by a stray bullet, and was left her paralyzed from the waist down. At 18 years old her life completely changed – she had to find a new normal – a new way to more forward.  In this episode we discuss her journey. She’s developed a deeper appreciation for seizing the moment. And says if anything she’s now more courageous than ever! Originally from Queens, New York, Rich and his younger brother George were introduced to the sport of cycling by their father Ricardo. George rode in the Tour de France 17 times, has been part of nine winning Tour de France teams, and won three US National Road Race championships – and those are just the highlights. Closing out February with a true visionary & one of my very good friends: Macy Walker. I’ve personally known Macy for over five years. We met while working together at an interior design firm. I didn’t know it on my first day of work, but she lived in my apartment building. Funny story I had actually walked to work on my first day because my husband and I only had one car at the time. It was June and we live in SC so as you can imagine it got hot (and humid) early on in the day. So you can imagine the gratitude I had for Macy when she offered to drive me to work every morning. Pretty much from that day on we were attached at the hip. And it didn’t take long for me to see that this girl was a real a real go-getter. She had vision, knew what she liked, and had an incredible work ethic – all of which I really respected & admired! She eventually moved back to her home state of Mississippi in 2013. In this episode we have a very special treat  – and I will say in advance that we cover some very deep, substantial, and also sensitive material in this episode. For some people who listen to this, it will be I think the most important podcast episode you ever listen to. And that has nothing to do with me and everything to do with the stories and lessons you will hear from Shannon Pierce Shannon is a magna cum laude graduate of Clemson University and has spent over 20 years as a practiced nurse. She is also the founder of CareCam Innovations and the inventor of the patented CareCam Documentation System. This “Medical Documentation System” was issued a U.S. Patent in June of 2009. Additionally She was awarded “Innovator of the Year” and the “Unsung Hero Award”  by Interim Healthcare. In this episode Shannon talks about how frustrated she was with traditional healthcare documentation. She saw that too much time was spent documenting patient’s care, sacrificing the amount of facetime clinicians actually spent with patients. She recognized early on that written, typed, and dictated records are time consuming, error prone, subject to fraud and abuse, and cumbersome to retrieve. So […]

Eric comes from a history of people with a passion for health and wellness. Skoloff senior was a pediatrician, so you could say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree… Eric spends the first half of his day alongside neurosurgeon’s in the operating room looking after his clients as they undergo brain surgery. The second half of his day has been devoted to launching his latest venture: Cycle Bar: a brand new streamlined spin cycling studio. As we discuss everything from their coffee shop obsession to building their dream business from the ground up. A little over a year ago they decided to join forces and start a new venture to create a place that blended both their strengths. Every year that I go back home to New Hampshire for Christmas I make a point to stop by and visit with Al Fulchino of Fulchino Vineyard….the same place where I celebrated my wedding day. This year’s visit promised to be extra special, as I had scheduled an in-person-interview with Al for Dec 23rd.  I always send my interview questions to my guest’s ahead of time so they can familiarize themselves and feel more comfortable during our conversation. Al chose not to see the questions beforehand – said he didn’t want to overthink anything and cause it to influence his responses.   We each pulled up a chair, he poured us each a glass of his signature Cenare red wine, and we begin chatting. Al’s interview was going better than I could’ve ever imagined, at about 75 mins into the interview we decided to take a short break. I went to pause the recording as I normally would and for whatever reason the entire recording disappeared! […]

Today you’ll hear my conversation with Charles Pate as we talk about everything from star gazing in Africa to teaching art to inmates in a high security prison.   First let me give you a little bit of context: Charles has newly relocated back to Greenville, SC with his wife Sarah and their baby boy Charlie.  Anyone local to the Greenville area may know his work from sculptures displayed throughout the city. Charles is an award-winning painter and sculptor from Greenville, SC. After national success at an early age, he enrolled in the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), where he graduated with honors in painting and art history in 2008. Charles believes that art-making is in his DNA. Charles follows in the footsteps of his father, Charlie, who is also a painter and sculptor. The father and son duo have worked as a team to collaborate on several major projects but also work independently of one another. Charles has shown work both internationally and stateside. Oddly enough, I was introduced to Charles artwork through my husband, who plays basketball with him. And in fact we discuss the duality between Charles the Artist and Charles the Athlete. His artistic side includes […]

Today you’ll hear my conversation with Jessie Artigue, she is literally one of my podcasting heros. It was an absolute honor to have the opportunity to chat with this lady! Let me give you a little bit of context; Jessie lives in sunny Long Beach, California with her husband Gerard and their puppy dog, Sadie Mae. You guys may know this gorgeous lady from her hilariously entertaining podcast Marriage is Funny which she co-hosts alongside her husband. And most recently she’s branched out as the solo host of The Perfect Wife podcast (which I’ve currently already binge listened to)???? She’s a style expert by trade and spent former years as a professional journalist. In this episode she shares [for the first time ever] the NEW exciting project she’s been working on, to be launched in 2017! You can find out more about both podcast shows at theperfectwife.me and meetthepeppers.com. Oddly enough, I discovered the Marriage is Funny podcast through instagram, from a post from Jess Lively a while back. Like many people I binge listened to their episodes and found them SO relatable. I have to say that their show has brought up conversations between my husband and I , where I’ve honestly learned some things I never knew about […]

Imagine this — You start do everything right, you graduate with a solid degree, you get a respectable well-paying job, and you start to earn a “living” but you feel like something is missing. And what’s worse; the reality that you are  just a cog in the wheel and 40 years away from retirement, hits hard.  This is where my guest Anthony Tenaglier found himself one day. He began to dig deeper and started getting back to his roots hiking, climbing, and journaling his thoughts. What started as mere notes to collect his thoughts Eventually became his first published book: The Impression of a Good Life: Philosophical Engineering  Anthony was seeking a better reality; one that aligned with his values of hard work, entrepreneurship, and crafting a meaningful career. In his book he brings light to the uncomfortable truth about the traditional song and dance: the life we think we are expected to live.  Here’s the raw, vulnerable truth about designing the life you want to live and the lessons Anthony has learned from his own life.   IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL FIND OUT ABOUT Anthony tells us how being asked if he thought himself a failure, brought him to where he […]

Today on The Liveng Proof Podcast, we are speaking with New Hampshire-based make-up artist & business owner, Johanna Hinkle Payeur of Jo Louise Beauty We’re discussing how she got to where she is today, her mission to help women cultivate self-love & confidence, as well as her experience growing up trying to be traditionally “successful.”   From an early age she’s always loved to create. Growing up she was the go-to among her group of friends for hair and make-up. And like many creatives her path was certainly not a straight one. She originally pursued a path in graphic design, worked at a tanning salon, and even sold printers. All the while knowing she felt out of alignment. She decided to shake the idea of working the traditional 9-5 and began investing in educating herself about her passion: the beauty industry. Knowing she had a vision of one day being her own boss. And she did just that! Johanna launched Jo Louise Beauty in 2014 and her business quickly took off. She eventually opened her own retail space. And just this month (Nov 2016) she has moved to an even bigger location to support her growing business. She is so grounded and stays focused on the thing […]

I have a very unique connection with today’s guest. I went to elementary school with him and he lived just down the street from where I grew up. He was in the grade ahead of me and I can’t say our paths crossed much back then but it’s funny how life can circle back and connect you again with someone (yet another amazing perk of this podcast).   Today’s guest is Casey Elsass who followed his calling to pioneer his love of adventure and food. He is one of the co-founders of Bushwick Kitchen which began in 2014 as a 30-day bet to start a company. And now their product is on the shelves of William Sonoma! IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: Casey’s thirst for adventure “not wanting opportunity to slip by…that’s the kind of person I am” The insight he had to find “normalcy” after the first few years of starting up Recognizing the need for connection after experiencing work-induced solidarity Why creating a product from scratch feels vulnerable & requires bravery How Casey handles disappointment & success Casey’s typical morning routine MEMORABLE QUOTES FROM THIS EPISODE: “Success is the graceful execution of Plan B” “I think the only failure […]

James Bobo Eason grew up an athlete: he played football, baseball, and basketball. He picked up his first set of weights at 15 years old. The plates powdered with dirt from the set-up he had created in his backyard. He eventually made it into a real gym, but realized he was on his own to figure everything out. Ultimately this became his reason: he wanted to give to others what he had not had in those early days – someone to show him how to properly use the equipment. Trial and error proved to be his method back then. Bobo kicked off his career as a bodybuilder at the Greenville Athletic Health Club in 1978 and placed 2nd. With his competitive drive, he knew he had found his calling. His early days as a drug-free bodybuilder eventually led him to powerlifting. In 1982 he began his powerlifting training with the intention to put on some size. And he did just that. Bo put on 77 pounds to his 5’7” frame; from 178 during his bodybuilding days to a solid 255. To no surprise he excelled in the powerlifting arena. His heaviest squat (in the gym) was 804, his legal DL at […]

IN THIS EPISODE: CONNECTION to people and CONNECTION the between nervous system and the body Seth see’s people in PATTERNS – and behavior mirrors patterns How people get stuck in patterns When we are stressed we go back to the habits that got us there How stress affects breathing Tissues muscles and joints can get stuck in a pattern that the brain perceives as a threat/ dangerous Type A, results/goal oriented personality types and risk of higher tension closed/narrow focused = further perpetuating (mentally rigid/tighter = physically tighter) Not open to learning something new REAL vs. PERCEIVED “threats” OPENNESS & willingness to change and adapt to new patterns Stacked Breathing: or inhale on top of inhale.
