As the former head of the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Griffith University, Michael’s expertise encompasses crime analysis and retail crime prevention, and of course he is our resident academic at the Profit Protection Future Forum.

Today we are joined by Matt Tierney, Manager, National Retail Investigation Support Unit at New Zealand Police. The National Retail Investigation Support Unit is an internal police unit and was established in November 2021 with an aim to target recidivist offenders who are offending in multiple locations across the county. Nationally, the unit partners with the retail sector and crime prevention organisations and works with Police staff at a district level to assist them to specifically target offenders causing the greatest harm to the retail sector, its staff, and customers. The NRISU is coming up to their 2 year anniversary so a good time for an update.

Unfortunately the abuse of Retail staff from aggressive customers is increasing and in a survey conducted by the National Retailers Association, over 88% of retail workers interviewed had experienced abuse from customers, whilst over 85% of workers had experienced verbal or physical abuse whilst trying to prevent crime. So today we talk about – Is the customer always right ? Is this the “new normal” for retail ? How can we prevent it ?

We are excited to announce that this year, that Michael, in conjunction with Griffith University, will be conducting research for the 2022 AU/NZ Retail Crime Report. The last report was done pre pandemic in 2019 by Dr Emmeline Taylor, and a lot has happened in the last couple of years, so the data should be really interesting. Michael gives us an overview of the Report and details some of the new questions that have been added to enhance the quality of the data. Stay tuned, the survey will be released next week. It wasn’t uncommon that some premises were targeted multiple times throughout a day. The offenders are inhaling the substance from the can. We talk about some of the customer behaviours we have seen over the last 8-10 weeks, and how violent behaviour affects our retail staff and also talk about processes that can be implemented to ensure the mental health and safety of our retail teams are paramount to an organisation.Some of the statistics from the Report :* Over 90% of respondents had experienced aggression or violence in their workplace with over 36% reporting they experience it at least five times a year * While only 32% of respondents reported a physical injury as a result of violence or aggression in the workplace, more than 76% noted an emotional/psychological injury * 54% of respondents reported having received no training in the management of violence or aggression * Violence and aggression is accepted as either “normal” or a “regular part of the job” by more than ½ of the respondents.

On today’s episode we're talking via Skype with Dr Emmeline Taylor, a Criminologist in the Department of Sociology at City, University of London. Emmeline has completed many research papers and has been published extensively about a number of different topics. In Australia, Emmeline has held positions at ANU in Canberra and UTS in Sydney, where she is an Associate of the Designing Out Crime research centre. Emmeline has been actively involved in the PPFF since its conception in 2015, regularly presenting her research to participants.
