Central Coast Voices addresses the many ramifications of change and how today's choices will affect tomorrow's community. This program is an extension and production of "Action for Healthy Communities" an organization committed to identifying and carrying out projects that will improve the quality of life in San Luis Obispo County.

As many as 25 million Americans are unable to read or write. In San Luis Obispo County alone, there are an estimated 25,000 functionally illiterate adults. Of the 500,000 immigrants and refugees who arrive in the United States each year, most are illiterate in their native language. Supporting the development of literacy has the ability to transform these individuals’ lives and their communities, empowering individuals by removing barriers to their success.
While people’s attention has been elsewhere, the southern border crisis has continued. In August the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported more than 200,000 migrant encounters at the southern border, a 317% increase over last August, and a 21-year high. This is the second month in a row where the number has been over 200,000 encounters. What is worse is that this comes with an increase in the number of unaccompanied minors crossing the U.S. and Mexico border. Last month, the CBP reported the average number of unaccompanied children in CBP custody was 1,435 per day, compared with an average of 1,353 per day in July.
Alcohol is the leading preventable cause of birth defects and developmental disorders in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports an estimated 1 in 8 women drinks during her pregnancy, putting her child at risk, and as a result every year thousands of infants are born with disabilities because they were exposed to alcohol in the womb. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Awareness Day held yearly on September 9th, is a reminder that there is no “safe” level of alcohol while pregnant.
