Lust and gluttony don’t start in your body, they start in your story about what will finally make you feel okay. We go after the deeper question behind the habits: what am I trying to soothe, and what am I willing to cross to get it?

We pick up our Lent teaching series on the seven deadly sins by naming why these two are so persistent. Drawing from John Cassian, Augustine, and Aquinas, we talk about why lust and gluttony are “long wars” and why they often drive the excuses behind other struggles. You’ll hear a reframing that cuts through shallow definitions: lust isn’t only sexual sin, and gluttony isn’t only overeating. Gluttony is consuming a good thing beyond its purpose to medicate pain or insecurity. Lust is craving fulfillment in a way that bypasses God’s will, timing, or boundaries.

From dopamine shopping and information overload to validation chasing, relationship dependency, and achievement obsession, we apply ancient wisdom to modern patterns with a clear goal: move from the city of man, where we try to fix ourselves with man-made steps, to the City of God, where we live by the Spirit and the blood of Jesus. We close with Galatians 2 and a simple, searching practice: ask what love requires of you right now.

Our phones have trained us to escape the moment, and the cost is higher than wasted time. Emily and I talk candidly about the seven deadly sins as more than extreme “bad people” problems and how moralism can distort sin into either self-righteousness or quiet despair. Drawing from the wisdom of the early church fathers and the desert mothers and fathers, we name what many of us feel but rarely confess: we cannot fix our sin nature on our own, and we cannot become like Christ without Christ.

We dig into acedia, the restless refusal to do what love requires, and how it shows up in modern life through constant distraction, multitasking entertainment, and numbing behaviors. We share real examples from parenting, relationships, and everyday pressure, plus a simple diagnostic that keeps coming up: what is my motive right now, and what am I trying not to feel? We also explore nostalgia and why it can either become gratitude that anchors you in the present or despair that makes you want to live somewhere else.

Along the way, we reflect on Walden by Henry David Thoreau and how media can give a false sense of awareness while blinding us to the people God actually placed in our care. If you are hungry for Christian spiritual formation that leads to repentance, presence, and deeper dependence on Jesus, you will find practical next steps here. Restlessness has a way of disguising itself as normal. Sometimes it looks like scrolling before we even get out of bed. Sometimes it looks like a packed calendar and a “successful” life that still feels hollow. Today we name that ache for what it is: acedia, the ancient spiritual struggle the early church called the noonday demon.

We walk through the meaning of acedia as more than laziness. It is resistance to the demands of love, a heart that stops caring about the right things. Drawing from John Cassian and Thomas Aquinas, we explore why acedia can show up as total withdrawal or as hyper-productivity, and why our culture often praises the very pattern that keeps us spiritually numb. We talk about how acedia whispers, “If God loved you, you’d be somewhere else,” then pushes you toward distraction, avoidance, chronic dissatisfaction, and treating prayer, Scripture, generosity, and forgiveness like optional add-ons.

Then we get practical. The historic cure is not more noise or a new escape plan. It is presence. It is forcing ourselves back into the “cell” of our real life, noticing the sun rise and set, and choosing gratitude that watches, waits, and remembers. Whether you feel stuck in your calling, checked out in your relationships, or unsure you’re making a difference, this is an invitation to show up with your whole self and do what love requires right where God has you.

What if the reason we feel stuck isn’t a lack of effort, but the wrong target? We take a hard look at moralism—the checklist faith that rushes people through spiritual “levels”—and show why it can’t heal the heart. Instead, we trace a slower, deeper path where sin is seen as disordered love and distrust of God, and where union with Christ restores what rules cannot.

We start by challenging the fast-track myth and naming pride as the root that feeds so many branches of sin. From there, we reframe three everyday struggles—envy, wrath, and greed—through a practical, pastoral lens. Envy often hides a lie about God’s love; we counter it by celebrating others from a place of secure affection in Christ. Wrath thrives on control and vengeance; meekness becomes strength under God’s justice, refusing to multiply harm. Greed promises security through possession; generosity, sourced in Jesus rather than habit, trains our trust and loosens our grip. Along the way, we explore how culture normalizes the “religion of self,” why private choices aren’t really private in a communal body, and how virtues lose power when detached from the Vine.

What if the sin you confess isn’t the sin that’s driving you? We draw from the early church’s wisdom on the seven deadly sins to diagnose the roots beneath our most familiar habits. Rather than chasing quick fixes, we ask the harder question: what's your motivation behind the things you're doing?

We start by reframing confession. Overwork, gossip, withdrawal from church, and short tempers with kids often look like problems to solve, but they’re usually symptoms. Pride can whisper “I’m indispensable,” greed says “never enough,” and acedia numbs us with distraction and listlessness until silence feels unbearable. By tracing actions back to motives, we show how real transformation begins when desires change first, and behaviors follow as fruit.

Pride takes center stage because it hides in plain sight, quietly corroding relationships. You’ll hear twenty practical “fruits of pride” to spot in everyday life—sinful competitiveness, people-pleasing, craving recognition, resentment in serving, self-sufficiency, interrupting, and the subtle “I deserve it” mindset that kills gratitude. We connect the dots with Scripture, from Jeremiah’s blunt diagnosis to James’ promise that God gives more grace to the humble. Along the way, we tackle parenting anger, church disengagement, and the restless boredom of acedia, offering language and examples that make the inner landscape unmistakably clear.

We close with three simple practices to kill pride and grow humility: make your life about others, submit to trusted people who can name your blind spots, and repent often by naming the root sin, not just the behavior. If you’re ready to stop managing symptoms and let grace heal the cause, this conversation will give you a path forward. If this helped you see your heart more clearly, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review to help others find the show.

The heavens open over the Jordan and a voice calls Jesus “Beloved.” Moments later, the Spirit leads him into a wilderness where every shortcut beckons. That tension—identity affirmed, then instantly tested—anchors our journey through Matthew 3–5 and frames a richer understanding of Lent as a season of honest formation, not hollow performance.

We explore how the early church guarded truth by retelling it, and how desert fathers and mothers chose prayer, fasting, and solitude to hear God clearly. Along the way, we map the three ancient temptations that still stalk modern life: the urge to provide for ourselves on our terms, the impulse to protect our image and avoid pain, and the lure to promote ourselves with power divorced from obedience. Each is answered by Scripture not as a slogan but as a story lived—words planted in childhood, prayed in community, and practiced in secret.

From the Kidron Valley’s shadow to the quiet room of Matthew 6:6, we show why turning down the world’s volume is the only way to notice God’s whisper. We talk identity before activity, and offer simple, concrete rhythms to carry you beyond a sprinting faith: close the door, open your Bible, sit in silence, and let gratitude steady your heart. If you’ve felt the pull toward shortcuts or the pressure to hustle your way through a dry season, this conversation will help you reframe the desert as a place of clarity, courage, and character.

Hope doesn’t live behind us; it’s being prepared ahead. We dive into Advent as a season of patient, forward-looking formation, pushing back on the rush to celebrate early and the nostalgia that quietly tells us the best days are gone. From Mary’s courageous yes to the early church’s costly love, we trace a simple thread: God meets us in the middle of ordinary life, and hospitality is how hope takes shape.

We unpack Luke 2 with cultural clarity: the “no room” moment likely refers to a full guest room, not a failed inn, placing Jesus’ birth inside a bustling home where animals warmed the night. That shift changes everything. The manger sits in the center of human life, not on the edges, and the incarnation becomes a model for how we welcome Christ now—by welcoming people whose presence may complicate our schedules and challenge our assumptions. Mary’s forward-looking faith counters the despair of longing for rooms we can’t return to; Advent trains us to prepare a place while Christ prepares one for us.

From there, we connect the dots to the early church’s witness. The gospel spread less through polished arguments and more through embodied compassion—tables set for strangers, care for the vulnerable, and courage to love beyond convenience. As we move toward Christmas, we name the most sacred work many of us will do: set the family table, slow down enough to notice the lonely, and make room for God in the mess, the noise, and the real. If Jesus was born in a house, then our homes can become holy ground today.

What if the way we tell time shapes the way we love God? We trace the deep roots of Advent and Candlemas to show how the early church used feasts to form memory, kindle joy, and carry light from the sanctuary into ordinary homes. Along the way, we meet Anna in Luke 2—a widow of great age whose quiet devotion becomes a loud sermon about steadfast hope. Her story pushes back on the myth that only big platforms change the world, revealing how staying, fasting, worshiping, and praying can open our eyes to recognize Christ when He draws near.

We explore how secular calendars took center stage and why the church once organized life around retelling God’s acts. From the Nativity candles taken home as living reminders to the offering of light returned on Candlemas, these practices were never about optics; they were about formation. We dig into the history, the Reformers’ calendar cuts, and the way those choices still shape how we mark the season today. Then we contrast Zechariah’s divinely imposed silence with Anna’s honored voice, highlighting Luke’s careful theme: God dignifies the overlooked and entrusts His message to those the culture underestimates.

This conversation is both historical and deeply practical. You’ll leave with simple ways to embody Advent: light a candle and pray at dinner, choose a modest fast to make room for presence over hurry, begin and end each day with short prayers, and serve quietly without fanfare. If you’ve ever wondered how to move beyond holiday noise into holy attention, Anna’s life offers a clear path—steady, unseen, and radiant with hope.

What if the pace you live at is starving the person you’re becoming? We explore why a culture of acceleration cannot produce a deep soul, and how real spiritual formation requires a slower, steadier path. Using a simple visual of four concentric circles, we show why the inner life—personal growth, healing, and spirituality—sets the ceiling for everything public and visible. When the outer expands faster than the core can sustain, life forms sinkholes. The antidote isn’t more polish or better systems; it’s a return to presence.

Together we walk through five stages of prayer that unfold across a lifetime. Verbalization honors the dignity of your voice and the beauty of asking. Reflection shifts the question from “Do this” to “What are you already doing?” and trains your attention through daily examen. Listening often arrives through a dark night, where feelings fade and obedience deepens around the still, small voice. Watching loosens our grip on outcomes as we keep people and plans on the altar and let God move. Being, inspired by Brother Lawrence, becomes a quiet, continual awareness of God in ordinary moments—no performance, just presence.

Along the way, we name the risks of leading from the outer rings and the quiet practices that strengthen the center: unhurried Scripture, honest confession, patient silence, and gratitude in the everyday. We challenge the myth that growth must be fast, and we pray for a pace that your soul can carry. If you’ve been measuring success by visibility, numbers, or timelines, this conversation invites a reset toward depth, sustainability, and joy with God.

What if the biggest reward for your life isn’t a title or a win—but the people who cross into eternity because you stayed faithful and chose unity over pride? We dive into Philippians 4:1–3 with a clear lens: joy follows the mind, unity fuels mission, and spiritual maturity is measured by how quickly we reconcile rather than how loudly we insist we’re right.

We start by tracing Paul’s pattern—orthodoxy before orthopraxy—showing how belief shapes practice and why surface fixes never stick without a transformed heart. From there, we look at his tender yet urgent appeal to Euodia and Syntyche. He doesn’t air the details; he calls them to share the same mind in the Lord. That phrase becomes the engine of the whole conversation: the mind of Christ from Philippians 2, the low road of humility, the willingness to lay down reputation for the sake of unity. Along the way, we call out the “autoimmune church” problem—when the body attacks itself through gossip, factions, and stories we invent about each other’s motives—and offer a practical, pastoral path toward reconciliation that moves beyond venting and into repair.

We also highlight the often-overlooked strength of women co-laborers in the early church, naming Euodia and Syntyche alongside Clement to show how gospel work has always been carried by women and men together. Finally, we lift our eyes to the book of life and the eternal perspective that frees us from craving credit and anchors us in quiet, faithful service. People are the crown. Unity is the lane. Joy is the byproduct of a mind fixed on Christ and a team committed to peace. If you’re leading, serving, or simply seeking a healthier church life, this conversation will give you a hopeful, sturdy roadmap for navigating conflict, nurturing humility, and keeping your eyes on what lasts.

What if the real test of faith isn’t what you believe in theory, but how you walk it out with other people—especially the ones who rub you the wrong way? Journeying through Philippians 3, we explore why Paul refuses to let belief stay abstract. He moves us from orthodoxy to orthopraxy, from ideas to daily habits, and he roots the entire shift in one provocative claim: Christians don’t live fragmented lives. Our heavenly citizenship informs everything—work, politics, relationships, desires—because Jesus is not a weekend identity; he’s the organizing center.

Expect some holy discomfort as we challenge fragmented living and gimmick-driven spirituality. Paul’s invitation to imitate his life confronts our obsession with polish and ease. He was poor, opposed, often alone—and deeply content. The early church saw glory through a cross-shaped lens, not a pain-free one. That vision steadies us now: we can lean into community when offended, guard doctrine without losing love, and set our minds above without abandoning the world we’re called to serve.

What's worth more than your most impressive accomplishments, your proudest moments, your deepest knowledge? According to the Apostle Paul in Philippians 3, absolutely nothing compares to knowing Jesus Christ.

Paul's credentials were impeccable: properly circumcised, pure Israelite lineage, from the prestigious tribe of Benjamin, Hebrew-speaking, Pharisaically trained, zealously religious, and legally blameless. By all cultural standards, he had every reason to boast. Yet he declares all these achievements as worthless—literally "dung" or "rubbish"—compared to knowing Christ.

The episode traces Paul's spiritual journey from intellectual knowledge of Christ to intimate relationship with Christ to fully experiencing Christ through resurrection power, suffering, obedience unto death, and ultimate resurrection hope. This progression challenges us to examine our own spiritual development: are we still clinging to religious accomplishments, family heritage, theological knowledge, or even past sins as sources of identity?

Most powerfully, we confront the question: what are you boasting in? Whatever credentials or achievements you value most, Paul invites you to count them as loss for the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus as Lord. Only when we release our grip on everything else can we truly gain Christ and be found in him.

What are you truly trying to attain in your spiritual journey? This question anchors our exploration of Philippians 3:12-14, where Paul reveals the delicate balance between who we already are in Christ and who we're becoming.

The spiritual life isn't about finding some secret formula or hidden path—it's about the gradual transformation into Christ's image. Paul gives us a three-part framework that revolutionizes our approach to discipleship: forgetting the past, embracing the present, and looking ahead to the future. This isn't just theoretical theology; it's practical wisdom for anyone who feels defined by their history or stuck in their current circumstances.

One of the most powerful concepts we unpack is the Michelangelo metaphor of spiritual formation. When the famous sculptor was asked how he created his masterpieces, he explained that he simply removed everything from the stone that didn't look like the image he saw within it. Similarly, God sees the masterpiece within us and is carefully chiseling away everything that doesn't reflect Christ's image. Your mistakes aren't marring the sculpture—they're being removed to reveal the true you.

Perhaps most revolutionary is the shift in how we view others. When we understand that the ultimate goal is union with Christ, we stop seeing people as obstacles, competitors, or even just friends—we see them as image-bearers whom we're called to help move closer to Christ. This transforms how we approach marriage, leadership, conflict, and every relationship. Instead of merely avoiding sin, we actively pursue honoring others as Christ.

Whether you're wrestling with past trauma, feeling frustrated with your current spiritual progress, or unsure about your future direction, this message offers a fresh perspective that combines theological depth with practical application. Join us as we discover what it means to press on toward the goal for which Christ has taken hold of us.

The study of Philippians 3 offers a refreshing counterpoint to our culture's constant pursuit of novelty. When Paul writes, "For me to write the same things to you is not tedious, but for you it is safe," he strikes at the heart of effective spiritual leadership.

Drawing from basketball analogies, this episode explores how the greatest NBA players—Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan—never outgrew practicing free throws. Similarly, spiritual maturity isn't about discovering exotic new truths but mastering foundational ones. Just as championship games often come down to free throws, our spiritual effectiveness depends on consistently returning to basic gospel truths.

The Apostles' Creed serves as a powerful example. These twelve simple statements weren't elementary teachings to eventually outgrow—they were core truths Christians would "repeat until the day we go to glory." From God as Creator to the resurrection of the body, these fundamentals provide spiritual protection in a world constantly pulling us away from truth.

Paul's stern warnings against "dogs," "evil workers," and "the mutilation" reveal his concern about legalism creeping into the church. Those imposing religious requirements missed the essence of true faith. Paul counters with a beautiful definition of genuine believers as those who "worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh."

This tension between legalism and grace remains relevant today. As leaders, we must guard against both legalistic tendencies and the temptation to seek novelty over substance. Our cultural drift away from foundational truths makes Paul's message more urgent than ever—repeating core values isn't tedious; it creates safety for those we lead.

What free throws of faith do you need to keep practicing? Which foundational truths need renewed emphasis in your leadership? This episode challenges us to embrace the power of spiritual repetition in an age obsessed with the new and novel.

What makes someone willing to risk their life for people who don't even appreciate them? This powerful examination of Philippians 2:25-30 unpacks the extraordinary example of Epaphroditus, a man whose faithful service nearly killed him—yet he was ready to do it all again.

The passage reveals five critical roles that define authentic Christian service: brother (shared identity), coworker (shared purpose), soldier (shared fight), messenger (shared message), and minister (shared burden). These distinctions aren't just theological concepts but practical guideposts for how we relate to one another in ministry contexts.

Epaphroditus exemplifies extraordinary commitment, carrying on his ministry despite knowing the Philippian church might have preferred Paul or Timothy instead. His story challenges us to examine our own motivations. Do we serve for recognition and appreciation? Or are we willing to persist faithfully even when it costs us dearly? Most importantly, we learn that joy isn't the absence of sorrow but can exist alongside it when we remember who we ultimately serve.

Whether you're feeling unappreciated in ministry, wrestling with difficult relationships in your church, or simply trying to understand what faithful service looks like, this message offers profound encouragement. Share this episode with someone who needs the reminder that their service matters to God, even when others don't see its value.

What if your everyday complaints were actually a form of blasphemy? In this powerful exploration of Philippians 2:15-18, we discover the radical call to become "blameless and harmless children of God" in a world that values self-defense and righteous anger.

The ancient Greek word "akareos" paints a striking picture of Christians as defenseless lambs without horns – completely vulnerable yet protected by the ultimate Shepherd. This counterintuitive approach challenges our natural instinct to defend our reputation, "clap back" at critics, or vindicate ourselves when wronged. Through personal stories and biblical insights, we see how taking the high road isn't weakness but profound spiritual strength.

The episode concludes with a powerful reminder that our entire Christian journey begins and ends with simple trust in God. Just as the Israelites forgot God's mighty works and focused on their inadequacies, we too can lose our effectiveness when we shift the spotlight from God's power to our limitations. When facing impossible situations, our testimony should remain unchanged: "I trust God."

The tender balance between God's work in us and our active response to Him forms the heart of Paul's message in Philippians 2:12-18. Diving deep into this rich passage, we explore what it truly means to "work out your salvation with fear and trembling" while recognizing that "it is God who works in you."

What does it look like to handle your spiritual calling with reverence? The Greek words Paul uses paint a vivid picture—phobos (fear) describes carrying something precious with extreme care, while tromos (trembling) acknowledges our dependence on divine guidance for tasks beyond our natural abilities. This isn't about being terrified of God, but about approaching our responsibilities with holy awareness.

Have you noticed how easily we slip into complaining? Paul, writing from a Roman prison cell, challenges us to do everything "without complaining or disputing." In our contemporary culture, where ranting attracts attention and validation, Christians are called to stand apart through grateful attitudes and loving responses. Early church father John Chrysostom even compared complaining to blasphemy—it implicitly questions God's goodness and provision.

Whether you're leading a ministry team, managing household responsibilities, or navigating workplace challenges, this message reminds us to approach every task with reverence and gratitude. The deeper our relationship with God grows, the more naturally our actions align with His purposes—not to gain approval from others, but because His will has genuinely become our own.

What happens when we reduce Jesus to merely a powerful deity rather than our sovereign Lord? While exploring Philippians 2:5-11, we dive into why this passage became the most quoted text among early church fathers as they defended essential Christian doctrine against dangerous heresies.

This episode examines how the early church confronted four major heresies—Docetism, Arianism, Nestorianism, and Gnosticism—and why their modern versions continue threatening orthodox faith today. From moral relativism that subjectively redefines sin to syncretism that blends Christianity with other religious practices, these repackaged ancient errors undermine biblical truth in subtle but devastating ways.

How do we guard against these influences? By distinguishing between "closed-hand" non-negotiable doctrines and "open-hand" matters where Christians can respectfully disagree. We must reject modernity's pressure to innovate doctrine, submit to wise spiritual leaders, remain comfortable with divine mystery, and pursue Christ with both love and reverent fear.

What truly sets Christian community apart from other social groups? In this episode of our Philippians series, we dive deep into chapter 2:1-4, uncovering Paul's four distinctive markers of authentic church life: encouragement in Christ, comfort of God's love, fellowship of the Spirit, and affection and mercy.

The original Greek structure reveals something profound—these virtues aren't self-manufactured but flow naturally from divine sources. When we're rooted in Christ, walking in love, filled with the Spirit, and practicing mercy, the expressions of encouragement, comfort, fellowship, and compassion naturally overflow. This challenges our Western tendency to focus on manufacturing these qualities rather than nurturing them.

What story are you telling about the painful chapters of your life? In this powerful exploration of Philippians 1:12-18, we discover how Paul transformed his imprisonment into a platform for the gospel.

The apostle who endured five brutal whippings, multiple beatings, stoning, and three shipwrecks didn't view these as obstacles but as opportunities to blaze new trails for God's kingdom. His secret? The "paper plate perspective" - seeing his life not as precious china to be preserved but as a disposable vessel meant to serve others and carry something far more valuable than itself.

This mindset shift changes everything about how we navigate suffering. Rather than seeing ourselves as victims of circumstances - whether economic hardship, relational difficulties, health challenges, or workplace struggles - we recognize our true identity as "prisoners of Christ." We don't get to choose what happens to us, but we absolutely control the story we tell about our circumstances.

The way through suffering isn't escaping it but worshiping through it. When we maintain this focus, our praise becomes louder than our prison walls, and what others see isn't our pain but a beautiful place of sacrifice. Are you china or a paper plate? Your answer might just change everything.

What would leadership look like if we truly held people in our hearts? When the Apostle Paul wrote to the Philippians from prison, he made a radical statement—"I have you in my heart." Not just in his thoughts or on his ministry checklist, but in his heart. This wasn't passive sentiment but a conscious choice that transformed his leadership even in chains.

This episode explores how prayer evolves from obligation to joyful communion as we mature spiritually. Paul distinguishes between quick "breath prayers" scattered throughout our day and deep, consecrated times of focused intercession. Both are essential to spiritual formation, yet many believers gravitate toward one while neglecting the other.

Perhaps most transformative is Paul's emphasis that character development flows from connection rather than striving. Just as trees don't strain to produce fruit but simply stay connected to their source of life, Christians develop the fruit of righteousness not through moral effort but through deepening their relationships with Christ. This perspective revolutionizes our approach to discipleship, shifting focus from behavior modification to authentic connection.

This episode is a message from our First Wednesday service. In the message, there are 5 different groups of people who are baptized then ask the question, "what shall we do?" They all knew that baptism wasn't the final step in their faith journey, but just one of the steps in their faith journey. It's important that we too ask the question, "do the people in my workplace know I am a Christ follower without telling them?"

5 Fruits of Repentance:

  1. The fruit of repentance is generosity where there was selfishness.
  2. The fruit of repentance is honesty where there was dishonesty.
  3. The fruit of repentance is contentment where there was dissatisfaction.
  4. The fruit of repentance is love where there was selfish gain.
  5. The fruit of repentance is living a life led by the Holy Spirit where there was my own plan.

Recipe for Anointing (Exodus 30:22-24):

  1. Meekness & Submission
  2. Uprightness
  3. Humility
  4. Inner-cleansing

Week 6 Study Material - Life of David

View Details

This episode is the fifth part of a series I started on the life of David. During this episode I talk about how David's wife, Michal, who was notorious for judging David's extravagant worship. Michal should have been down celebrating with everyone else, but instead she chose to sit in a place of judgement. Religion has the same effect on a person, and often judges other’s freedom because they lack the experience of freedom themselves.

At the end of the episode, I discuss the content with a friend, and I hope you can do the same! I want to encourage you to grab a friend or a small group and go through this material with us.

Scriptures Covered:

  • 1 Samuel 18:20-28; 19:9-17; 2 Sam 6:20-23; Ps 59

My hope is that this podcast helps grow your faith and equips you to accomplish your dreams and goals!

This episode is the fourth part of a series I started on the life of David. During this episode I talk about how Saul had a mighty advocate in David, a mighty warrior who’s heart was to serve Saul with humility. Instead of basking in that advantage, Saul became jealous and insecure in his position when David was around. He began to compare himself to David, take the score of every win and loss, and despise David’s victories.

At the end of the episode, I discuss the content with a friend, and I hope you can do the same! I want to encourage you to grab a friend or a small group and go through this material with us.

For David to be successful in battle, he had to learn to value God’s opinion above all others.

Week 3 Study Material - Life of David

View Details

This episode is the second part of a series I started on the life of David. During this episode I talk about how God was preparing David’s heart in the field. David enhanced his craft in the field. He played his harp in front of the Sheep before he played in front of Kings. It was the field that prepared him to skillfully play before the King, and it was his skillful playing that brought God’s spirit upon Saul. Every single thing was for a reason. David was described in this way:

  1. He played skillfully
  2. He is a valiant man
  3. He is a man of war
  4. He is a prudent leader
  5. The Lord is with him

At the end of the episode, I discuss the content with a friend, and I hope you can do the same! I want to encourage you to grab a friend or a small group and go through this material with us.

We live in a generation that is overwhelmed with anxiety, stress, and worry. We all go through it at some point in our lives. Let's talk about disappointment. Maybe you have been believing for something and then it turned out to be a disappointment and not what you thought, so how do we deal with disappointment? God told us we were to ask and receive but what happens in between the ask and the receive is where the enemy comes in and tries to tell us lies. I want to discuss how to deal with disappointment and overcome what the enemy is trying to tell you.

Lies from the enemy:
1. This is the way it's always been
2. Your best days are behind you
3. Your never going to get out of this

Truths from God:
1. The new thing will not look like the old thing / Isaiah 43:19 (AMPC)
2. Your best days are ahead / Proverbs 4:18 (MSG)
3. Jesus came to set you free from the sins you've committed and the pain others have brought to you / Luke 4:18 (NIV)

God has great things ahead no matter the lies or disappointment
keep yours eyes on God!

I'm excited to share a message with you that I spoke at One Church in our Selfless series. Over the past month we have been focusing on how to be more selfless in the new year. Today, we are focusing on the story of Cain and Abel in Genesis 4 and how Cain's problem wasn't really about Abel but more about himself. Cain focused on comparison, anger, unforgiveness, and pride which led to his resentment for his brother. I hope this encourages you and leads you be more selfless while overcoming any of these areas you may find yourself in.

Do you ever stop to think about what YOU want? We are faced with so many opportunities in life and most of the time it turns out like a game of deal or no deal! Today, I want to talk to you about doing what you want. It's time to stop seeking approval from others to guide your decision because the truth is everybody has an opinion about what you should do. Jesus said in Mark 10:51 to the blind man, "what do you want me to do for YOU?" And He is asking you the same thing!! Every dream and goal starts on the inside of you, not others! Start making the most of your opportunities and don't let people who are behind you define you!

  1. My spirit is my responsibility

With the Holiday season, you have probably seen a lot of snow globes around and chances are you've picked one up and shook it around! I think that we can learn a lot from how snow globes work and how a snow globe perspective can give us a spiritual lesson and change the way we see our life! In Galatians 1:15-16 the Bible tells us, But when He, Who had chosen and set me apart [even] before I was born and had called me by His grace (His undeserved favor and blessing), saw fit and was please to reveal (unveil, disclose) His Son within me so that I might proclaim Him among the Gentiles (the non-Jewish world) as the glad tidings (Gospel), immediately I did not confer with flesh and blood [did not consult or counsel with any frail human being or communicate with anyone]. This verse in Galatians can help us to see that:
1. Every snow globe is made with everything it needs on the inside
2. When things feel like they are falling apart they are actually coming together
3.They are made with the owner in mind
4.They are unmoved by circumstances
5. Just because you don't see Him doesn't mean He isn't there

What is servant leadership? At One Church we have a core value that Servant Leadership is our Identity. In Proverbs 24:27 the Bible tells us Put your outdoor work in order and get your fields ready; after that, build your house. We have to be planted in the house of the Lord before we can build our house! Today, I want to talk to you about your field and being a servant leader through these topics:

Having limitless faith in the society we live in today can be hard. Especially when we are surrounded by negative people and your current situation doesn't look encouraging. I'm here to tell you that God's timing is perfect, it's time to get your hopes back up and stop listening to the negative things people say! Quit letting other people disqualify you from what God has already qualified you for! Just as the Lord told Elijah in 1 Kings 18, He is about to send rain on your land. It doesn't matter what your circumstances are like or what people are saying, if you walk by faith there are no limits to what God can do! Ephesians 6 tells us to put on the armor of God, not that it's already on or we are born with it. We have to physically put it on ourselves each day. It's a choice! Verse 16 tells us to take up a shield of faith so that we can extinguish the darts of the enemy. I love this so much because it's basically telling us that we will have attacks from the enemy but if we choose to put on the shield of faith we can overcome! If you could ask Jesus anything, what would it be? Most of the time we don't even ask because we are afraid of not saying the right thing. 100% of prayers that you never pray will go unfulfilled. The Bible tells us in Mark 16: 17-18 to pray bold prayers in Jesus name and we can do big things! There is authority available for the believer. For so long I asked myself the question, Does God answer prayer. Now I know He does! Your life is as limited or unlimited as your prayers. Friend, it's time to start getting results from your prayers and believe that in Jesus name all things are possible! That tells me one thing, that we need to slow down! The only way we can overcome stress is by submitting our lives to God's plan and slowing down in the process. When we are thankful where we are in the process we will be able to manage our stress better and live a healthier life. In today's culture it can be a challenge to raising Godly children. Maybe you aren't a parent yet but you are planning for kids in the future. Either way, we must start by being an example. We all have goals to set, the difference is who actually achieves your goals and who doesn't. There are 4 key factors that I believe hold us back from achieving your goals. These reasons not only keep us from believing we can set our goals but keep us from growing and moving forward in our life. Friend, it's time to set and acheive your goals and let nothing hold you back! Do you ever have moments of wondering what to do when God is silent in your life? He gives you a promise and then months go by and your questioning what He told you. Sometimes we get ahead of God because we think He hasn't responded fast enough but the truth is sometimes those promises take longer because what we can't see is that God has something much greater and bigger for you! In the story of Abraham, we see that he waited 13 years to see God's promise fulfilled!! Romans 4:20 tells us, "No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God." I want to be like Abraham knowing that no matter how long it takes even when I can't hear God, my faith will not waver! Has God put a dream in your heart but after years of pursuing it you ended up giving up because you feel like it's not worth it? I want to encourage you that even though you may not see it, God is preparing you and molding you for where you are going! We see in Hebrews 6:12, "We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised". You have to be faithful with what God has given you at this time in your life and have the patience to endure what it takes to get there. I love the book of Ruth because it is a great example of what it means to stay faithful where God has called you to be! Welcome to the Crystal Sparks Podcastl! I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me is a commonly known bible verse in Philippians. However, do you really believe that you can? I think a lot of times we think its possible for other people but when it comes to ourselves we think otherwise. Friend, just as the Bible tells us in Romans 8:11, "And if the Spirit of Him Who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, [then] He Who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also restore to life your mortal (short-lived, perishable) bodies through His Spirit Who dwells in you", we have the same power in us!! If you believe that, what can that power do for you? Has God given you a promise but you are starting to question if it will actually come to pass? Friend, it's okay to have moments of doubt and questioning but at the end of the day are you choosing to believe what God has promised you? In Romans 4:19-21 the Bible tells us about Abraham, "Without becoming weak in faith he considered his own body, now as good as dead [for producing children] since he was about a hundred years old, and [he considered] the deadness of Sarah’s womb. But he did not doubt or waver in unbelief concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong and empowered by faith, giving glory to God, being fully convinced that God had the power to do what He had promised." Even if you doubt just know that you are stronger than you think you are! Just like God's promise to Abraham, he didn't choose him because he was strong he chose him because he was willing! God has the power to do all that He has promised you, you just have to put your trust in Him. He is more than able! We all have habits in our life, some are healthy habits others not so much. All throughout the Bible it tells us how Jesus had a habitual pattern of seeking God and going to pray. Our life is a product of our daily routine, we have to make up our mind and start making small changes along the way. Where are you believing to be? The life you are currently living doesn't have to be how it will always be, start creating healthy habits in your daily routine and be encouraged in your self control knowing if Jesus had to do it, so do we! Today I want to talk to you about what to actually know about Caleb from the Bible. In Joshua 11, the story in the Bible tells us about spies that went to view the promised land and that Caleb's report was good! As time goes on we see that something that could of taken a much shorter time ended up taking years to be fulfilled! There were several times where Caleb could of gave up, comprised, and said I'm too old for this, however, he continued following the Lord wholly. He knew the promise of God and wasn't going to stop until he saw that come to pass! What dreams has God put in your own heart but after a few months you get distracted and compromise? I want to encourage you today to begin believing again for everything that God has promised you! Feeling unqualified to do something is a common trait most people carry. In order for us to be more confident and feel qualified for what call God has on our life we must: 1- Quit saying negative things about yourself 2- Trust that if God calls, God will equip We have to quit analyzing our flaws and trust that God will always equip us with what we need. He doesn't call the qualified, he qualifies the called. If we were qualified to do what God has called us to then we wouldn't need Him. Stop telling yourself who you aren't and start telling yourself who God says you are! I believe there are 3 relationships that are the most important relationships you could have. These 3 relationships will change how you see yourself, others, and your relationship with God. In 1 Peter 3:10-11, the Bible tells us, “The one who wants to enjoy life and see good days [good—whether apparent or not], Must keep his tongue free from evil and his lips from speaking guile (treachery, deceit). He must turn away from wickedness and do what is right. He must search for peace [with God, with self, with others] and pursue it eagerly [actively—not merely desiring it]." Even the Bible tells us that we need to focus on 3 relationships to have peace. I hope this message encourages you to strengthen your relationship in all areas of your life! Do you ever have moments of feeling overwhelmed or like everything is about to fall apart? I know I do! I believe this is because we let our circumstances overcome our peace. What the Bible says about peace in Exodus 14:14 is "The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” Are you holding on to peace or holding on to your circumstances? You are as peaceful or as frustrated as you choose to be!
