Daniel Radin is the guitarist and vocalist in the band Future Teens and he’s also launched a new solo endeavor called Lake Saint Daniel - of which he has recently independently released a full-length album, “Good Things.” In this episode, we discuss Daniel’s experiences as a touring musician, doing the solo thing, and what it felt like to bring in a number of different tastes and styles into his sound without boundaries to create a very personal album. While we don’t talk a whole lot about Future Teens, I interviewed Amy Hoffman (of Future Teens) last year, and if you’d like to hear that conversation, just click here and you’ll get to hear about their wild ride to becoming a member of the band.

Mike Fox is the Assistant Director of Student and Family Engagement at Bristol Community College - he’s a great example of authentic leadership and an all-around great dude. Mike and I became acquainted six years ago when Katy started working with him at Lesley and we’ve been in touch ever since! He’s also always been a big supporter of my public speaking career so I’m glad to finally give him a platform!
Mike and I discuss the importance on entertainment on college campuses, how the pandemic have shifted our jobs, and what it means to be an authentic leader. Julia Hvsolef is the Assistant Director for the Office of Student Leadership & Community Engagement at UMass Boston - we work together! Julia is a badass educator and human being. We actually also went to graduate school together at UMass Amherst, so we’ve been connected for a few years now. In this episode, you get to hear us discuss her work with service learning programs and alternative spring break trips - as well as a hearty critique of that work and what it looks like to do jobs where we’re actively putting ourselves out of work. She’s also running the virtual Boston Maration TOMORROW (9/12), SO she’s been training hard for that - but there was a freak injury that sidelined her so you also get to hear about her rehab and how that impacted her training. All in all, a great conversation - Julia is one of my favorite people. I hope you enjoy this episode!

Casey Arn is a high school science teacher in Oregon - he’s also a massive vinyl collector and one of my good friends! Casey has been in the education world for his entire adulthood and has a lot of wisdom to bestow upon our listeners on this episode. I’m back with another new episode! This week I chatted with Phoenix Lawson (they/them) - who is a college readiness coach based in San Francisco. In this episode, they discuss making the move from Student Affairs to working in a high school readiness system. We also discuss the difficult job search process in student affairs and mental health coping during the pandemic. Phoenix is also a pop punk aficionado - essentially being raised on Blink 182 and Green Day, and more recently The Wonder Years. Kim Warnick is a team member of Calling All Crows, which is a nonprofit focused on sexual harassment prevention at gigs, festivals, and other live events. This is great timing because April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month - so I wanted to have a conversation with Kim about her work with Calling All Crows and how it’s impacted the lives of concertgoers and volunteers alike. I'm stoked to bring back Derek Zanetti of the Homeless Gospel Choir for our SECOND conversation of this podcast - nearly 2.5 years since our first chat. If you’d like to like to listen to our first conversation from Dec of 2017, click here!
Zanetti writes protest songs that are meant to make people think and find some form of comfort during these troublesome times. The Pittsburgh, PA-based musician has been creating tunes and touring the world for over a decade and his new album is his first since creating a full-band for touring. “This Land is Your Landfill” further exemplifies Zanetti’s witty yet unabashedly earnest songwriting, which is a constant source of community building within his circles. This conversation focuses a lot on the album, as well as meanders into very political spaces, which makes sense given the moment we’re currently living in. Hope you dig it! Sara Lieto is a poet, an app developer, and all-around wonderful human. Selfishly, I wanted to interview Sara because I wanted to learn more about what she does - since we always interact at the gig in Boston but never seem to make the time to sit down and have a proper chat. So I reached out and here we are! Sara has a knack for the written word and does some great work spreading radical feminism wherever she goes. This brand of feminism creates a great foundation for her as she navigates a heavily male-dominated field. We dig into gender roles and expectations, as well as what writers got us into performing and writing poetry, and of course we talk about the gig! Hope you enjoy this one!

Roman Mars is a founder of the podcast company, Radiotopia and the host of the podcasts, 99% Invisible as well as What Trump Can Teach Us About Constitutional Law. While Mars is an established radio and podcast host, he is a student of the world - as both of his podcasts deal with him constantly learning and figuring out ways in which we all fall into the larger societal landscape. Mars also grew up as a punk - as we explore throughout the episode. This punk upbringing influenced not only the decisions he made for his own education, but also how he developed his personal ethics. This conversation also goes to show that punk isn’t JUST music, but goddamn, the music helps!
This conversation was sort of a dream come true - I’ve been listening to Roman and following his work for years, so to have a chat with him for an hour felt very surreal. It was also incredibly rewarding because I learned so much and am grateful for his willingness to hop onto my little DIY pod.

David Cave is a former skrams vocalist from Denver, Colorado - which is where most of the stories in this conversation take place. Because before moving to Boston and quickly becoming one of my best friends, David lead an entirely different life. From beginning to drink and smoke at a young age, to getting in recovery through meetings and having a sponsor, to eventually finding some peace with the universe, David has lived a lot of life in just 33 years. Now, 13 years sober, David finds himself reading a lot of existentialist works, in Dharmic meditation, and seeking a lot of meaning as he moves into perhaps the biggest next step in his life - fatherhood. We had a lot of fun recording this conversation late one Saturday night after eating a bunch of Buffalo Wild Wings, and it was totally time well spent. I hope you enjoy this one!

This week I chatted with Rachel Betron! They work at Seattle University - in my home region of the Pacific Northwest! So it was nice to talk to someone so close to home! While Rachel and I haven’t met in human form yet, we hit it off quickly as this conversation quickly veered into some awesome topics. We started with Rachel’s educational and professional trajectory and eventually branched off into a larger conversation on the Seattle QTPOC DIY community - it’s roots in anti-imperialist and anti-fascist work. It’s time for a new season of the podcast! In this first episode back from the extended break, I sat down with Josh Cyr - who is the bassist from the band, The World is a Beautiful Place and I am No Longer Afraid to Die. We chilled out in the band’s tour van right before its sold out gig at the Great Scott in Boston - where Josh also played double duty playing bass for the opening act, Harmony Woods. Josh and I had a quick chat about his history in music, with TWIABP, and his perspectives on toxic and performative masculinity in the music scene. Essentially, our conversation can be boiled down to DON’T BE A DICK - which is fitting because one of the pieces of educational materials that our nonprofit provides goes by the same title. Alas, so thankful for Josh taking a moment out of his busy evening to chat with me.

Jack Senff is a singer-songwriter based out of Traverse City, Michigan. Jack has already had a wild ride through a number of genres and approaches to storytelling - especially as he’s transitioned from emo to post hardcore/skrams, and then into more contemporary indie jams - but now he’s truly on his own, using his own name, and releasing an incredibly stripped down release. Throughout his career, Jack has maintained his DIY ethics in touring, putting on gigs, and releasing his tunes - while continuing to amass and maintain a followership along the way.
Since Jack and I met a couple years ago, we’ve sort of felt like kindred spirits - hitting it off right away and with a tenacity as if we’d known each other for years. So this conversation is a continuation of us learning more about each other as we discuss Jack’s musical history, masculinity, storytelling, and what it looks like to reinvent yourself and to live various lives through music. We hope you enjoy!

Amy Hoffman is the vocalist and guitarist for the Boston-based band, Future Teens! Brian MacDonald is the Director of Residence Life at UCLA - he’s also a prominent cosplayer and promoter of the counterculture within higher education. Brian has been in the field for a while now, and this conversation serves as a way for us to unravel the many moons of his career. We dig into how authenticity comes through in our work and what it looks like to confront and acknowledge your privileges along the way. Brian also opens up about how cosplay has helped manage his mental health en route to becoming a professional Predator cosplayer. He also discusses what it was like to present at the NASPA conference this year about mental health and cosplay - and his connections to San Diego Comic Con and how he brings education in to bridge the gaps of nerd culture.

Clare Cady is the founder of the Colleges & Universities Food Bank Alliance (CUFBA) - she’s also an all-around badass. Clare and I go way back to our days at Oregon State University - where we met and became quick friends! In this episode, Clare shares her experiences with homelessness, joblessness, and food insecurity. She explores how the creation of CUFBA has impacted many college communities and the lives of even more students. We even dig deep into our mental illness similarities and what it’s like having a bipolar brain.
Clare and I also get to nerd out about fitness - explicitly about crossfit and weightlifting. We have both found community and support through our crossfit families and it’s great to discuss that together. Hope you enjoy this chat because it was great to catch up with Clare a bit!

Sarah Desmarais is the guitarist and vocalist for the Massachusetts-based band, Fucko. Sarah also works in marketing for America’s Test Kitchen - which is something I learned early in the conversation and it wound up steering the beginning of the episode. Sarah and i discuss what it’s like picking up an instrument (guitar) a little later than folks typically pick it up and start noodling around. Having also delayed my guitar learning til my 20s, I could relate to Sarah a good deal - especially around starting a band a tad later as well.

Chris Lee-Rodriguez is a brilliant musician, educator, and all-around good person. Chris is the guitarist and vocalist for the Boston-based jazzy emo band, Really From, and previously lead the math punk act, I Kill Giants. Chris recently released his first solo project with an EP called, “It Could Happen,” which he self-released on May 3. You will hear a number of these tracks throughout the episode!
Chris teaches young people how to play guitars and a number of other instruments - an experience that he reflects on in detail in this episode. This conversation also covers a lot of arenas of interest to our listeners including how Hurricane Maria impacted him and his family in Puerto Rico, to his disgust for capitalism and Shark Tank (to my chagrin), as well as Chris’ three pieces of being a good person.
This episode was recorded in a practice space - where other bands were practicing, so you may hear random bouts of song in the background here and there.

Kevin Klein is the lead singer and guitarist for the band, Valleyheart. Kevin is a multi-talented musician who has been on a wild musical journey to get to where he is today. Starting out playing in a Christian metalcore band, Exiting the Fall, Kevin eventually veered into more chill outlets as his interests in music evolved. Eventually those efforts would become the Salem, MA-based band, Valleyheart.
During this conversation, Kevin and I dig into his spiritual roots and how they have influenced, defined, and evolved during his life and musical ventures. The conversation also features a bit about the realities of booking DIY tours - playing not only in basements, but in restaurants and boxing rings as well. There’s also a great meditation or two on the influence Sufjan Stevens has had on both my life and Kevin’s life.
This is a fun and thoughtful conversation that I know you will love. AND you get to hear some beautiful music throughout. Valleyheart will be on tour with My Epic this month and into June. Katy Weaver is a professional photographer who created a career for herself out of sheer drive and passion for photography. Katy is also one of Craig’s eldest friends from college at Oregon State - the two met at the college newspaper and wound up working together off and on for many years. So they’re pretty familiar and use this episode to catch up a bit while exploring how Katy went from taking photos of Craig’s metal band in college to taking them of hundreds of people and couples from literally all over the world.
Katy is a prolific wedding photographer and provides a great deal of backstory and advice for doing great wedding photography, as well as what it looks like for her to give up the lens as she is currently planning her own wedding. The conversation also veers into some emotional spaces as Katy recently lost one of her best friends - but the memories, much like the photos, are what keep her going even through tragedy. This is one of the most heartfelt and loving conversations featured on this podcast and we hope that truly comes through.

This week’s guest is Junior Peña. Junior is the Assistant Director for the Leadership, Engagement, Advocacy, & Diversity Office (LEAD) at Salem State University. Junior and Craig have a great conversation about Junior’s journey through the field of higher education and what keeps him here through all of the ups and downs we experience. Junior went to UMass Boston for undergrad - which is where Craig works - so they had some things to discuss about that connection. The conversation evolves into a larger look at professionalism and the future of the field - as the two of them feel they are the new guard of Student Affairs amid a field that is often resistance to change and the new ways of doing things. Bill and Craig discuss Bill’s transition from growing up the midwest to living on the east coast as a professional, and branch into the always hectic work of summer housing and conference support - which is a wild never-ending revolving door of excitement. From there, we explore all of the ins and outs of planning a massive higher education conference, as well as the social justice-informed initiatives that influence all of the work that is done in community at ACPA. Allie has been in Residence Life for YEARS - and the experiences she has amassed along the way have given her a great perspective on how to support students from all walks of life. Allie is a VERY visibly tattooed professional, which plays a massive role in her relationships with students on her campus. It can also create interesting interactions with colleagues and administrators - but sometimes those folks surprise us in their levels of acceptance. We explore that in this episode. Allie also came up in the NY/NJ hardcore scene and has gone to great lengths to dedicate herself to the scene - we dig into this life of hers and how aging a bit changes our perspective on getting into the pit. In which Craig discusses his healing process from a recent accident and gives a preview of the upcoming season of the EduPunx podcast.
Hey folks!
Just wanted to share a big time update on my condition - including the original post I share about the incident - which can be found by clicking here!
Since the incident, I have done a quite a bit of healing - I’ve always been moved into a carbon fiber cast, which is much more enjoyable than the plaster cast I had for three weeks! A big positive if that I do not need surgery! So just a few more weeks and hopefully they will remove the cast and I can start PT.
The bigger issue, as I discuss in the episode, if the brain stuff - the mental trauma that this incident has put me through. I think of the incident everyday. I think of it nonstop when we drive, when I drive, and whenever I see a cyclist. I think of all the what-ifs and what could have happened. It’s terrible, but this is my life now.
Many folks have asked about legal stuff - and yes, I have two lawyers managing everything for me. My medical bills have even already been covered, which is fantastic!
During the episode, I even take a moment to thank the great folks at Timbuk2 for replacing my backpack that was damaged in my recent accident. they worked with Katy to get it to me and were super supportive in knowing their product quite literally saved a customer’s life. they EVEN gave Katy a new pack for being such a supportive partner!

Nicole Mazzeo runs the DIY sex-positive organization, Pleasure Pie. While Nicole was once located in Boston, she now resides oversees - in the Netherlands - which makes this our second international conversation of the year! We actually had this conversation at the beginning of October - before the podcast was corrupted, and before I was hit by a car last week. So it’s good to know that a lot has changed between then and now. But the conversation is full of fun reflection and perspectives on sex education, destigmatizing sexual health, and what it takes to be incredibly neurotic and keep up with so many projects.
Pleasure Pie is a small activist organization based in Boston, MA. Its efforts center around sex positivity, body positivity, and positivity about other good things. It makes alternative sexuality education materials (including zines, illustrations, and publications) and experiences (events, conversations, and workshops). We’re back after a month away with a chat with Macseal drummer, Francesca Impastato. Francesca is a graduate of Berklee College of Music - where she focused on drums and music business, as well as instrument repair - of which, she has a fantastically misogynistic story to share. Francesca began drumming at the age of 5 - and not just hitting the drums with sticks, but actually finding the rhythm and beat and playing from there. One could say she was born to play the drums.
Francesca and I sat down in my practice space in Allston, Mass on Sunday while a jam band was rocking out above us to chat about everything that came to our minds. It was great timing because Francesca was only in Boston for a short period of time before heading down to New York to prepare for Macseal’s weekender tour. Dylan Slocum is the lead singer and guitarist for the punk rock band, Spanish Love Songs. Dylan grew up playing baseball and was even a collegiate pitcher - which gave him a fascinating look into the college experience from the standpoint of a student athlete. Dylan and I broke down the lack of self-care that exists for a majority of student athletes, and how Dylan eventually developed his own path through education and even the punk rock realm.
Dylan and I sat down in my kitchen after a hefty Red Robin meal and got right down to business. The conversation often meanders through various life experiences - including exploring education options and opportunities throughout college while eventually finding worth in making music. He also does some great work in the classroom - but through a much different approach. That’s the thing about James - he’s able to do both; the bit of being an authentic professional teacher, and the bit of being an authentic punk musician. And as you’ll learn in this conversation, everything is a bit.

Dawn Graham is a punk educator, a zine creator and distributor and one of my favorite people! Dawn works with Boston young adults as they interact with and learn more about current technologies. They’re an endlessly talented and devoted creator of zines - and you get to hear all about how they found their gateway into zines at a very young age. So zines are in Dawn’s blood!

Andi Macone is the New England Youth & Young Adult Program Manager for Phoenix Multisport, which is an active sober community dedicated to supporting those in recovery from addiction and substance use disorder. Andi is also Craig's former colleague at UMass Boston. The two have had a wonderfully supportive relationship over the last two years. Both are also in recovery, so this conversation focuses on recovery, fitness, and how it can be hard to stay in control of our lives when responsibilities begin to stack up.
Craig recently started attending classes at The Phoenix (primarily at the suggest and support of Andi) and has already felt incredibly welcomed by the community. From CrossFit and climbing, to hiking, running, cycling, yoga and more, The Phoenix believes in fostering human connections in mental, physical and spiritual fitness is a powerful way to rebuild wounded bodies and spirits, and restore hope. The only membership fee is 48 hours of continuous sobriety. Ever since beginning at the Phoenix, Craig cannot stop sharing how much the community is creating a renowned sense of purpose for his recovery and fitness goals.

Glorivette and Rox run the Queerdos Brand, which is a DIY activist clothing brand meant to uplift and empower the experiences and humanity of queer people of color. The two were inspired by the recent insurgence of "The Future is Female" shirts, but they wanted to focus on the broader queer community in order to encompass folx regardless of gender and orientation.
We had a bi-coastal conversation this week, in which we discuss the struggles of being a queer person of color - and all of the cultural stigmas that are then piled onto societal stigmas. The conversation also veers into the hope we can create in solidarity with one another in the queer community and what that looks like in today's political climate. Glori and Rox are great people and we're so thankful they both took time out of their day to share such a thoughtful conversation and we hope you dig it!

Chris Paraskevas is a high school English teacher, vinyl and tattoo collector and baseball player based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada! This marks our first ever international conversation! Chris is an avid fan of literature, culture, and how social issues intersect and inform everything he teaches his students. Chris is a risktaker in the classroom - having taught a unit using the first season of the TV show, Atlanta, to dissect racial issues explored in the show through the classroom context. He also makes sure to push his students to think outside of their experiences and to consider the humanity and well-being of others through literature and music.
Chris and I break down what it's like teaching in Canada, being a working professional in the education field while being very visibly tattooed, and how important it is to be confident in the classroom. We also get into something I haven't pondered in a long time - teaching from a place of fear and that limits our work. This was a wonderful conversation and I'm very excited to share it with y'all because it's this sort of conversation that made me want to start this podcast!

Matt Coviello is a Public Safety officer at UMass Boston. Officer Coviello's focus on the force is community outreach and educational work. Craig and Matt work together at UMass Boston and are both very visible people on campus. Craig and Matt discuss what it's like working on a college campus in a big city like Boston, how the 2009 recession impacted Matt's initial approach to entering the police force, and why some of the most rewarding aspects of his work often occur outside of the campus.
Folks may wonder, "what is a cop doing on a podcast with the word 'punk' associated with it?" And that's a good question! We primarily wanted to bring Matt into the conversation because many of my colleagues work with public safety on their campus. Yannick Florest is an educator, teacher, and a rapper. Yannick has been educating in the New York area for his entire adulthood, and has taken much of what he has learned throughout the last decade or so and has put it into his music through the avenue of hip hop. Yannick has an incredible flow, brilliant messages, and some wonderful autobiographical flourishes that makes his art feel that much more personal as it is enjoyable.
Craig and Yannick met up in Brooklyn, NY a couple weeks ago to, well, meet for the first time, and to chat about life, education, anime, and hip-hop, all while in the confines of a somewhat still lobby of a Brooklyn Marriott. The two dig into the challenges of being truly authentic with students, how peers can perceive that authenticity, and the value of being a creative person within education - and how we let it out and let loose! This was such a lively conversation and we hope you love it too!

Late Bloomer is a grunge rock and roll band from North Carolina - the band consists of three progressive dudes doing work in the scenes of their relatively conservative state to challenge toxic masculinity and to uplift social justice initiatives. And it just so happens that Josh, the bassist and vocalist of the band, initially went to college to be a teacher and was planning to continue into the field until the Great Recession of 2008 derailed those plans. Even though he watched his educator friends drop out of the field, he realized that he had other options - like music!
The band recently released a new LP, "Waiting," through our friends at 6131 Records and it truly kicks some major ass. Fans of Dinosaur Jr., Basement, Fiddlehead, and Fugazi may dig the hell out of this album.
We also dig into how weird genre classifications work, as well as claiming straight edge after getting sober, the art of piano tuning, teaching little kids how to play guitar, and a bunch about random movies. The episode was recorded at Cafe Maddies in Quincy, Mass - so there is some noise and chatter in the background.

Corinne Chun is an educator, a Teach for America alum, and an Oregon State Beaver! Craig and Corinne get to catch up after a few years of being separated by oceans and life so talk about the world of education from the perspective of someone who grew up in Hawaii. Corinne chronicles her early days coming up through the education system on the island, while discussing the motivations to experience college on the mainland - at Oregon State University, where the two were RAs together!
Corinne is also an alum of the Teach for America program, which gives people the opportunity to build a more equitable future through educating students in high-risk communities. While most folks enter the program from carious fields - often not from an education background, Corinne DID have an education background and teaching certification already. After all, Craig and Corinne went through the same Education Double-Degree program at Oregon State together, so they had many classes together and on this episode, they definitely reminisce about those days. Aria Carpenter loves sex. Aria also loves educating folks about sex! So it's a great thing that she works for a sex toy shop called Good Vibrations here in Massachusetts. Aria is not only highly informed on understanding different sex toys, lubes, and condoms, she is also adept at leading workshops and educational opportunities for colleges and other work spaces. So this is going to be our most sexually explicit conversation to date - and that's a good thing because frank conversations on sex need to happen more often.
Since Craig and Aria are both sexual health educators, this conversations dives into a lot of their work and their differing perspectives as Craig is a cis-man and Aria is a Trans woman. Ultimately, it's a conversation that explores sex positivity, pronoun use, and the reality that we're always going to offend people and that's okay - but how we follow up matters. Aria is a very outspoken activist and is actually one of Katy's former students, and in the fall, she was featured in this Boston Globe piece about the trans student experience at Lesley University.
This is truly an expansive conversation that will even branch into an extra episode this weekend, so stick around for more!

Mauricio Dimas is a chef. A damn good chef. He is the Chef de Cuisine at a high-end Mexican restaurant in Portland, Oregon called, Autentica. Mauricio is one of Craig's eldest friends - having met in sixth grade in 1999 - and the two have been through a lot over the years. Craig and Mauricio met up at a donut shop in Portland on Craig's recent trip home and decided to record a chat!
While attempting to attend college, Mauricio realized that the traditional education route was not for him. So he decided to drop out of community college so he could pursue a different passion - a passion deeply connected to his family, his culture, and his love of food. In seeking out culinary school, he preferred the trade school approach to education. We get into what it was like making such a decision, how he earned his way into the industry, and what it takes to run a restaurant - the community, the planning, and the ways to keep it fresh.
We also dig into the recent challenges to immigration policy and how it impacts the restaurant industry, as well as a quick note on the passing of Anthony Bourdain - who was one of Mauricio true inspirations.

Conor McLaughlin is an adjunct professor in the Leadership Studies Department at San Diego University - where he teaches on the ethics of leadership. His work is heavily influenced by his punk roots and straight edge lifestyle, which we get into on this episode! Conor is a well-dressed academic punk, which also sort of bucks the typical stereotypes of what a punk should/could look like.
We dig into a lot of social and societal issues surrounding punk, privilege, and working in higher education as white men who are working toward dismantling systems of oppression from the inside. It isn't easy work, but we lay some groundwork for HOW it could be done - perhaps a follow up episode will be needed for this one!

In March, Craig hosted a panel for Tattooed Professionals at the ACPA Convention in Houston, Texas. The theme for this year's ACPA Convention was "Be Bold" and on his third attempt submitting this panel idea to other conventions, it was finally accepted! After all, what's more bold than being tattooed!

Chris Gilbert is a Director of Special Projects at Harvard University - the oldest institution in America, and an institution where he has held a number of titles, and holds a vast amount of knowledge. So this week Katy Hamm sat down with Gilbert, amid his interest in making the historically gender-exclusive Final Clubs gender-inclusive, a move that has sparked a great bit of controversy among current students and alums. Gilbert digs into the motivations for this proposed move and how his experiences being in the Harvard community have informed him over nearly a decade.
Gilbert also came up in the punk scenes of Chicago, is a straight-edge vegan, and is quite heavily tattooed - something you'd imagine would be a bigger issue at Harvard, but as you'll hear, there are a lot of misconceptions about Harvard. Gilbert is a fantastic person to hear discuss some of the history of Harvard, how he battles imposter syndrome, and a plethora of other enamoring topics throughout his conversation with Katy Hamm this week! Neal Karkhanis is a guitarist and singer in the band, The Great Heights Band, a Baltimore-based indie/pop punk band that releases its new album, "Rad Pop," this Friday! Karkhanis is also a lawyer, and Healthcare lobbyist for his day job as the Director for Government Relations for the Maryland Hospital Association. Karkhanis actually founded the band while in law school, which is equally impressive as it is absurd - but as he explains, there's a system to law school.
Karkhanis and I also dig into how we were both determined to succeed in education because of an educator telling us that we wouldn't succeed - so in true punk form, we learned out of spite and persevered. You also get to learn A LOT about the politics around healthcare access and the challenges and opportunities Karkhanis has had along the way.

Shawna Potter is the lead singer of the Baltimore-based feminist punk band, War on Women. Shawna is an activist for human rights, social justice, and gender equity - and is the founder of the Baltimore chapter of Hollaback, which is an initiative to combat street harassment. Shawna has also been facilitating workshops on sexual assault prevention - which she hopes to bring to college campuses, along with the bands' performances.
We spoke with Shawna about the creation of the new War on Women album, the state of politics, and whether the #MeToo movement is actually going to make a difference in the conversation and prevention of sexual assault moving forward. This conversation is also important because we address how to call-in folks when there are disagreements and learning opportunities as allies and how we can all stand to be a little more patient with each other.

Matthew Politoski started Animal Flag as a solo project many moons ago and over the years, it has become a band that is a force to be reckoned with. Politoski also comes from a pretty musical family, which is how he learned to make music - and now he works as a music educator, supporting kids and young adults of varying levels of knowledge learn how to be better musicians and ensembles/bands. We get into what he's learned along the way en route to finding out a number of fantastic musical connections - because the world is truly a tiny place.
On April 13, Animal Flag releases its new album, "Void Ripper," through Flower Girl Records and Triple Crown Records - an album that allowed Politoski to explore a number of topics that helped him process existence, faith, and the intersections therein. "Void Ripper" is a stunning rock album that is as raw as it is beautiful and elegant. Make sure you check it out when it drops!
Also, Matthew and I certainly got onto a number of tangents that were certainly related to the conversation - yet, one such tangent deserved it's own bonus episode, which you will hear this weekend! So stick around for that!

This is a special episode of the podcast because it features a talk/performance that I gave at Raritan Valley Community College in Somerville/Bridgewater, New Jersey last week! The talk is called, "Survival Ain't Pretty," and it's a talk that I've delivered a few times now, and I love doing it because it allows me to include my music and my poetry throughout the talk of me describing my life as someone who has lived with, survived, and struggled with ADHD, addiction, and mental illness.
There is a lot covered in this talk, and I know it might feel like a lot to take in, but after having done this podcast for over 9 months now, I felt it was time to truly let folks in on who I am as a person, especially at such a pivotal moment in my life and my exploration of mental health support services. Being vulnerable like this isn't easy, but it's something I've become quite accustom to over the years.

Sheridan Allen is the founder and director of Punk Talks, which is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting folks in the music industry with free mental health services. Sheridan currently hails from Philadelphia and is a trained therapist, social worker, and all-around great human being.
Punk Talks aims to provide free mental health assistance to bands, industry professionals, and fans while also educating and raising awareness of mental health and self-care. Punk Talks just officially became a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, so we get into that process, as well as what Sheridan has learned over the last three years of running the organization. This conversation is full of advocating for mental health support and community building, we both share out personal experiences with mental illness and survival - and share a number of ideas for how you can find support and help your friends as well.

Dane Erbach has been a high school teacher in the suburbs of Chicago for over a decade. Michi Tassey is a music therapist, the keyboardist and vocalist for People Like You, as well as the songwriter behind Nature Shots - her latest solo effort, with which she recently released her debut LP, Foreclosure. Foreclosure is an emotionally dense album. Throughout our conversation, Michi and I get into how channeling very personal source material can make for a very cathartic experience - especially when being present in the moments of which you're channeling.
We also dig into Michi's work as a music therapist, where she understandably gets to nerd out a bit about how music impacts the brain - spoiler: it all comes down to rhythm - and how music can literally help people heal from traumatic injury. Jess Hall and Tom Stevens are half of the Eastern Mass-based band, oldsoul. oldsoul releases its debut LP, "coy," this Friday, February 9 on Counter Intuitive Records. Jess plays guitar and sings and yells a whole bunch, and Tom plays guitar and sings and talks on the album as well. They're also BOTH recent college graduates!!
In this chat, we dig into the origins of the band, what it takes to keep a band alive while attending college, and the importance of safety at gigs in today's #MeToo society of folks finally listening to survivors and holding abusers responsible for their actions.

It's nice to be back after a taking a week off for the holidays and my birthday!
This week, I am chatting with two great punx, human beings, activists, and prevention specialists. Kat Stuehrk and Matt Walsh run the nonprofit, Our Music My Body. Our Music My Body is a Chicago-based collaborative campaign led by Between Friends & Rape Victim Advocates to raise awareness about sexual harassment in the music scene. They do this work because they believe everyone deserves to feel comfortable and safe when they go to a concert or festival. OurMusicMyBody works with festival and venue staff, musicians, and music fans alike to create fun and consensual music experiences for all.
We had a great chat the other night about the work they do, the challenges of confronting misogyny and harassment, and what it looks like to conscientiously attend gigs and festivals. It's work that I am personally dedicated to, and am thankful there are many others doing similar work in their communities! Ben McNamee is an Academic Advisor and Student Services Specialist at UMass Boston, he also grew up punk, straight edge, and an avid ska kid. Ben and I work together! It's awesome. We have also presented on how punk culture influences the work we do with our students, and how we use what we've learned through the years as punks to educate and grow in our communities.
In this episode, we get into Ben's career as an academic advisor, and an advocate for supporting transfer students, as well as the work he does supporting our professional union at work. He explains the difficulties of maintaining a union, as well as the struggles of beginning one - if someone were interested in learning how to do so. And we chat a bit about music along the way! It's a fun time. It was great to sit down in my office at UMass Boston and have this chat with Ben and I hope you like it!

This is PART TWO of the conversation on Grad School preparation that started last week, so I STRONGLY suggest that if you haven't listened to the first part, check that one out first!
On this episode, we dig into professional expectations, whether a Masters degree is necessary for entry-level positions in Higher Education, as well as a bunch of advice for folks seeking grad school is thrown out and it's a lot of good stuff!

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST
A few weeks ago, I reached out to the Millennials in Student Affairs Facebook Group and shared an old blog post that I wrote three years ago with some tips on navigating and researching graduate programs in Student Affairs in Higher Education. From the response this post always receives, I wanted to also ask if any of my recent graduates/new professionals were willing to chat with me about their experiences in grad school. The five folks I speak with on this episode are all FRESH in the field, with no one having more than 3 years of post-grad professional experience. Lauren Kashan (Sharptooth) &
Femmes in Hardcore
WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST!
This week, Katy Hamm returns as the host of the podcast to bring you a special chat with a very badass guest. Lauren Kashan is the lead singer for the melodic hardcore band, Sharptooth. Lauren also holds a Herpetology degree from Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland. She is a self-proclaimed Reptile Lady and works as an Environmental educator, regularly visiting schools, libraries, and other spaces where she teaches folks about reptiles and other fun creatures.
In this episode, Katy and Lauren bond over their shared love of hardcore music, wanting more femme representation in hardcore, and how fighting the patriarchy often starts in the pit. Katy's return to hosting duties is a doozy this week and you are bound to love it! And you get to hear some of the kickass tunes from the new Sharptooth album, Clever Girl, which is out THIS FRIDAY through Pure Noise Records.

High School Poetry
WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST!
This week, we bring you a very chill conversation with Xavier Pastrano, who is the bassist and lead singer of the sludge/stoner metal band, Skin of Our Teeth. Xavier is also a high school English teacher in Sioux Falls, South Dakota! The dude is incredibly passionate about poetry and literature and we connect on our shared experiences as English teachers - since I taught high school English for a couple of years as well.
We also get into race relations a bit, since Xavier was raised as a mixed kid by a single white mother. And since Xavier lives in a very conservative state, we get into the politics of being a more progressive educator in areas where inclusiveness might not be a priority in the education system. Needless to say, we had a lot to discuss - so much so that there will be a bonus episode later this week of just us talking about music and vinyl!

- Xavier discusses how his Black Like Me unit with his students was deeply impactful for his students.
- It was powerful to hear how Xavier's students reacted to the racist murder of Emmett Till.
- Xavier and I have a shared love of the post punk/dark wave band She Wants Revenge.
- I was glad to learn that Xavier took one of his students' favorite artists, Twenty-One Pilots, and demonstrated the poetic devices at play in their song, “Car Radio."
- I discuss how I used four songs in Thrice's "Alchemy Index" album as a demonstration of Shakespearian sonnets.
- It might not be the recipe that Xavier references in the conversation, but here is a recipe for eggless egg salad!
- In classic English teacher fashion, Xavier lists "Catcher in the Rye" and "Perks of Being a Wallflower" as two of his favorite books of all time.
- For his all-time music favorites, Xavier displays his true varied taste in music by naming, Baroness (specifically the "Blue" album) and No Doubt (specifically “Tragic Kingdom”) as the top of the list.

This week is a special episode of the podcast because it's the FIRST episode where the reins are handed over to Katy Hamm! You might remember them from our 14th episode, where we discussed mental health in the workplace. Well now Katy is the host, chatting with one of their students, Anaëlle Séïde!
Anaëlle is a senior at Lesley University studying Biology and Cognitive Neuroscience. She is also a co-director of the peer social justice education organization at Lesley called CommonLYNX - which is a fantastic pun since the Lesley mascot is the Lynx! Katy and Anaëlle dig into the details of what it takes to run a peer mentoring program based around diversity, inclusion, and identity development. They also break down, from the student perspective, the barriers that exist between student and admin in terms of professional boundaries and respect.

Matt Nazario-Miller is a fantastic human being who has turned his loves of the marketing world and student affairs into a full-time gig by becoming the Social Media Specialist at UC Davis for their office of Student Affairs Marketing Communications. As someone who did a graduate thesis on student engagement through social media, I was eager to chat with Matt about the topic of social media because even I have a bunch to learn.
This is one of the most focused conversations of the podcast so far - with great reason, because it's important to focus on how to truly engage students through social media. Plain and simply, it isn't easy - but there are some great tips and suggestions discussed throughout this chat if you are making changes to your approach to social. This week is a real fun and lively chat with musician, Greg Nahabedian, of the art-punk/hardcore band, Dérive. Greg is an incredibly interesting human being and a multi-talented musician, who also teaches piano to people of all ages.
Greg and their fiancee, Chelsea, came over to my apartment to record this episode, and we got into a lot of different topics - from Greg's early days breaking into the music industry as a drummer-for-hire, to attending Hampshire College for music composition, and into their life as a DIY punk artist traveling the country on self-booked tours. We also get into a bit of faith, queer issues, as well as why piano and classical music isn't dead! Dillon Nettles is the Community Programs Director for the Montgomery Education Foundation (MEF) in Montgomery, Alabama. Dillon has lived in the south his entire life, and the timing of the heinous, racist, and bigoted events this weekend in Charlottesville, he shares his thoughts with me!
We also dig into his work at the MEF and what got him into the education field, as well as what keeps him doing this work in spite of the various systems of racialized oppression and segregation that still exist and persist in America in 2017. This is a fascinating conversation and I am so excited to share it with you all.

This week I am chatting with one of my eldest friends, Greg Jungwirth! Greg and I go way back - all the way back to McNary High School in Keizer, Oregon. Back then it was a lot of playing poker on the weekends, making crappy movies, and playing pickup sports whenever we could. Today, we're both very educated and Greg is now a Resident Physician at Valley Medical Center in Renton, Washington!
While I was (and am) a major goofball, Greg is the smartest person I know. So it was very cool to have a serious conversation, as adults, about healthcare and what it's like maneuvering the complicated minefield of being a doctor. I learned SO MUCH in this conversation, as we dove into the shady backroom deals that were being made in the recent attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and what that uncertainty looked like in his medical center. This weeks I chat with an incredible human being named, Cassie Wilson! Cassie is an accessibility activist and musical entrepreneur who runs the online music reviewing site, Sick Snaps, as well as the nonprofit, Half Access.
We chat about music, Taco Bell, being from Oregon and the greater purpose of Cassie's work in the scene today. Half Access is a program that gives disabled music fans a voice in accessibility issues and ableism at concert venues through a database of music venues and its accessibility needs and issues, while also developing ways to help venues improve their practices.
Having recently turned 19 (HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!), she is already making a major name for herself as the recipient of a $10,000 grant from Hopeless Records and Sub City. She was flown to Cleveland to receive the award in front of thousands of people and musicians she admires at the Alternative Press Music Awards!

I am so stoked to share this week's conversation with Josh Odam. Josh and I met during my time as a grad student at UMass Amherst, where he was an undergraduate student. Through our interactions, I quickly learned about the poise and passion he possessed. It was magnetic.
Since I left the Amherst community, I stayed in the UMass family - as I now work at UMass Boston - and I have kept in close touch with Josh as he has developed his brand of DIY activism through a clothing line he created. Josh started Free Negro University as a way to spread some positivity to his friends and community members in Amherst and beyond.
Josh and I dig deep into the politics of race in America - especially in regard to the education system. Seeing as Josh is now a graduate student in Labor Studies, his perspectives on the intersections of race and the work force are incredibly nuanced and embattled. This was an informative and fun conversation and we hope you enjoy it!

Strap yourself in! This one is a bit longer than usual - and that's because we spoke with not one, but FIVE people this week! And I use "we" because this week my partner, Katy Hamm, joins in on the conversation!
While on vacation to Orlando, Florida, we took a day or so and visited St. Petersburg, Florida and connected with some of our friends at Presence! Presence is a web and mobile software platform that helps institutions identify ways to increase student engagement, better allocate resources, enhance assessment practices, and promote opportunities, ultimately improving outcomes and retention.
Beyond all that mumbo jumbo, Presence is one of the most innovative education-based startups in the field today. The organization is growing at a rapid rate, now being contracted to over 100 campuses, and with like a bajillion donors and investors!
And yet, it all started VERY DIY roots by CEO, Reuben Pressman, who you get to hear a lot from on this episode!
