And this brings Season 7 to a close!

For our final episode, we are joined by Humanize Podcast hosts Courthney Russell Jr. and Emily Braucher. These two use their podcast as a platform for social justice, engaging in honest conversations about race, and not shying away from uncomfortable, vulnerable, messy terrain. What an absolute pleasure to have this pair on our show, make sure you check out their podcast!

Listen to hear us talk about

  • How Courthney & Emily began working together

  • How nerve wracking it is to get to know each other publicly on the podcast.

  • Conversational podcasts can teach listeners that it is normal to have challenging conversations, and how to navigate them. Raising consciousness through modeling.

  • Is it delusional to have hope in these times?

  • How healing it can be to be honest with ourselves: acknowledging our conditioning and shame.

  • What is the role of white people in racial justice work?

About our guests:

Courthney Russell Jr. grew up on KY and lived in the Virgin Islands. By the time he graduated from high school, Courthney's tendency toward stereotypical behavior had him on a collision course with incarceration or death. In a last-ditch effort, he applied to medical school and was surprised to be accepted. After experiencing homelessness and graduated in 2011 with a medical degree and a new mission: leverage his knowledge in a non-traditional way to become an authentic, determined, humble leader. Today, this looks like (a) co-founding a non-profit focused on serving the homeless and vulnerable (b) co-founding WeUp CBO, a company dedicated to addressing poverty through education, healthcare, and employment © He also is the co-host of The Humanize Podcast and is board president of a Co-Op organization in Denver, Colorado.

Emily Braucher is a keynote speaker and trainer who is singularly focused on helping people create trusting relationships across differences. She does this by teaching clients the tools to overcome the three challenges that inevitably get in the way of trust: ego, culture and power. For the last decade, Emily has worked with corporate, non-profit, academic, and government clients on strengthening the inclusive brain, fostering the “trust mindset,” creating psychological safety and practicing stress management techniques, always pointing people towards the best version of themselves. In addition to running ReFresh Communication, Emily is also co-host of the podcast, Humanize: Stories from the Heart about Social Justice.

What Courthney & Emily are hooked on right now:

- Reading: Medical Apartheid by Harriet A. Washington, The 1619 Project, & The Camino

- Watching: Breaking Bad, Seinfeld, The Sopranos

We are vacillating between resignation and rage in the wake of the Roe v. Wade decision. We recorded this episode on June 28. This is a heavy and raw conversation. You will hear us dive into uncomfortable terrain and uncover the nuances in our own belief systems.

This is a harrowing time. Don’t forget to reach out and lean on your support networks, find healthy outlets for your emotions, and be an advocate and ally for those most experiencing the gravity of these decisions. Resources and more reading linked below.

Listen to hear us talk about

  • Support networks: finding outlets for rage, reclaiming agency, and what to do when the people you love don’t share your values.

  • Embracing nuance in a culture of extremism

  • Who actually experiences the lived burden of this decision? (Not men)

  • The immense undertaking of being a parent.

  • Further consequences of this decision: people who are already under-resourced will be disproportionately affected.

"Own the history, tell the truth, sit with the discomfort”.

Since our chat with Amy Hunter last week, we haven’t been able to stop thinking about Truth and Reconciliation. In this episode we take a deep dive into its history, and applications, and what it would mean for the U.S to adopt its own T&R process.

Listen to hear us talk about:

  • Truth and reconciliation: what does it really mean?

  • Does the U.S. need a T&R commission?

  • Feeling personally attacked: this isn’t about you, and you don’t need to get your feelings hurt.

  • Being representative of your race: black folks are constantly equated to their race, white people can own their whiteness too.

  • Imagining truth & reconciliation: what would it look like? Who would be in the room?

  • You don’t have to agree, but you can listen.

  • Apologies: do they mean anything? What if there was a system to walk us through this?

  • Sage’s ABCDE framework for cross-cultural communication

  3. Sage’s ABCDE approach to cross-cultural communication

- Approach with respect

- Be curious (with discretion)

- Communication for connection (clean, clear, compassionate, couragmneous)

- Dialogue (encourage discussion, don’t shut it down)

- Educate yourself (diversify sources, you’re never done learning)

Season 7 continues to bring phenomenal guests and conversations.

We have an incredible guest on this episode, whom we “met” at a live comedy show in Austin, TX. She is bold and honest, unafraid to speak to injustices and is just damn funny. We are such big fans of Rita Brent and we are beyond excited that she is joining us today.

Listen to hear us talk about:

  • How the places we live can cultivate (or hinder) our talents.

  • Using curse words: when are they necessary, and when do they detract from the value of the message?

  • Cancel culture: who gives who the power to cancel? Who is the author of this cancellation?

  • Being strategic in the internet age: everything we say can be used against us

  • Disarming through humor - using comedy to shake opinions and resonate deeply

  • Greater popularity means greater responsibility. How should we use our platforms?

  • Why it is important to acknowledge and accept our fears, and not leave this earth with regrets.

More about the hilarious and brilliant Rita Brent”

Rita Brent is a comedian, musician, and military veteran from Jackson, Mississippi. She discovered her love for music as a young girl performing in talent shows and southern Baptist churches as a drummer alongside her mother and singer-pianist, Angela. She credits her mother as the one who helped cultivate and support her talents. At age 18, she joined the 41st Army National Guard Band where she served for nine years and ended her time in service as a sergeant. Rita graduated from her beloved HBCU, Jackson State University, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass and Speech Communication, and pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

After graduating from JSU she landed at Mississippi Public Broadcasting where she served as a Radio Host and Producer. Since then, she’s been featured on Kevin Hart’s Hart of the City, TruTV’s Laff Mobb’s Laff Tracks, and Epix TV's Unprotected Sets. Rita has released three singles, “Kamala,” “Raised in the Sipp,” and “I Deserve to Be Alive”. She currently tours as a feature act with her mentors, Rickey Smiley and Cedric the Entertainer. Welcome back to another episode of Race, Culture & Beyond, A Naked Conversation Podcast! In today’s episode, we have an exceptional guest with us who will share with us all about her journey towards becoming a poet and how her writing has a special connection with religion, childhood, trauma, and racism.

Dr. Rochelle Robinson-Dukes is a professor at the city college of Chicago, where she teaches literature and English composition. She has been published in African American Review, Another Chicago Magazine, Poetry Hall, The Raven’s Perch, among many others. In addition, she’s the editor of Brownstone Barrio Bards, a journal celebrating its twentieth edition this year (you can find the link to the journal on Lulu, Amazon, and Apple Books).

Dr. Rochelle Robinson-Dukes began writing when she was only 8 years old. She started writing because she felt it was the best way to express her emotions, given that she comes from an era of “children should be seen and not heard.” She was also raised in a religious background that did not allow her to express her thoughts transparently. As a result, Rochelle put off writing for a couple of years, and the year of the pandemic gave her back that space to write about all of the bottled-up feelings she had.

Dr. Robinson-Dukes also speaks about how she never felt she couldn’t do anything. She accomplished everything she set her mind to and raised her son based on those beliefs. Rochelle gives those examples to her children: to never accept judgment, categories, or labels. And to instead look up to the leaders we have or have had.

We cover many topics including storytelling in Black culture, religion, abandonment issues, racism, family history and trauma, and self-awareness.

Thank you for listening to the show. It is such an honor to have these conversations with you. They are necessary and needed, and we are here to do the work.

Hello everyone, and welcome to a new episode of Naked Conversations! Today’s episode will be a review of many important matters happening at the moment.

As most of our episodes begin, we will be speaking about what we’re currently into:

  1. Ramy on Hulu
  2. Dave Chapelle
  3. The prophets, a novel by Robert Jones Jr.

We will also be discussing awkward moments, for instance, how Sage found herself in a teenage theater play and found it offensive for herself and her son, who watched it with her. Finally, we talk about the importance of time, place, and audience and how we sometimes don’t enjoy what everyone else finds hilarious.

One of the most significant subjects discussed during this episode will be Juneteenth:

“Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas, a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics, and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing.”

We will discuss the importance of this date, its history, and why it is a time to honor and date June 19th.

  • What Nikita is currently into, Netflix-wise. For those interested, the first Nikita speaks about is called Monster, and the second show is called Black Box.
  • What does it mean to be on a journey? For starters, being open in the truest sense. Nikita tries to do everything that the day brings, and she chooses to completely accept it instead of fighting it.
  • What an imperfect journey looks like and her experiences during 2020.
  • Her identities: Being a journeyer, women of color, gay, postpartum depression (not survivor), educator, and a mentor.
  • The importance of being true to oneself, even if that means being angry and bitter towards everything that is going on in our messed-up world.
  • A little bit more on the relationship between Sage, Erika, and Nikita.

In today’s episode, we have an incredible guest who is a brilliant and brave disruptor, with a huge smile and infectious personality.

Mirna Valerio is a native of Brooklyn, NY, a former educator, and cross-country coach, ultramarathoner, author of the Amazon bestselling memoir, A Beautiful Work in Progress, and antiracism educator. Although she began running in high school, she recommitted to the sport after a health scare in 2008 and started her blog Fatgirlrunning—about her experiences as a larger woman in a world of thinner endurance athletes— while training for her first marathon. Mirna's athletic story has been featured in the WSJ, Runner’s World, on NBC Nightly News, CNN, and in the viral REI-produced documentary short, The Mirnavator. Her writing has been featured in Women’s Running Magazine, Self Magazine Online, Outside Online, and Runner's World Magazine. In 2018 she was chosen as a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, and she has appeared on the Kelly Clarkson Show, Access Daily, and on Nigel Barker’s new V1Ve Network. When she wears her diversity, equity, and inclusion hat, she helps schools, nonprofits, and businesses to step up their antiracism efforts. She currently lives, trains, and works in Vermont, USA.

In today’s episode, we talk about Mirna’s book A Beautiful Work in Progress, as well as explore the myriad of stories from Mirna’s adventurous life.

Mirna shares:

  • Her 5 core values and how they impact her life choices (they’re awesome, and I’m adopting several of them)
  • Being a disruptor as a female, Black, plus-sized, professional athlete, and ultrarunner
  • What it means to do “adventure work” and how she came to do it
  • What books she’s reading and why she’s into them
  • How she brings people to the work of activism through teaching and adventure
  • Her INCREDIBLE journey from classroom teacher to professional athlete with corporate sponsorships (Lululemon among others!)

“We are all entitled to inhabit the Earth. People have reactions because many of the spaces (that I show up in) have historically seemed to be for white folks.”- Mirna Valerio

Welcome to the sixth episode of our fifth season of Race, Culture & Beyond: A Naked Conversations Podcast!

In today’s episode, we will be talking a little bit about the Derek Chauvin trial and the bitter-sweet feeling over it. Even though the verdict leaves us with relief and sweet emotion, the fact that we have so much more work to do regarding racism is the bitter part of it.

We will also be discussing what it is like to have a “Black card” and how easily it can feel like we’re losing it if we don’t fit the “expectations.”

Erica speaks about hilarious experiences, like trying to join a Facebook group for Black women and actually having to ask her husband and friends about the correct answers to be able to be a part of the group.

As for Sage, does she want to be “woke?” Is she? But what about liking Black music and influence from growing up in Philly?

We also share the definition of woke, and how it isn’t precisely a term that white people can be entitled to: Stay woke became a watchword in parts of the black community for those who were self-aware, questioning the dominant paradigm and striving for something better. But stay woke and woke became part of a wider discussion in 2014, immediately following the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. The word woke became entwined with the Black Lives Matter movement; instead of just being a word that signaled awareness of injustice or racial tension, it became a word of action. Activists were woke and called on others to stay woke. Merriam-Webster dictionary

Welcome to a new episode of Race, Culture & Beyond: A Naked Conversations Podcast. In today’s episode, our special guest Amy Nelson will share with us her thoughts on racism and education.

Amy Nelson (she/her/hers) works full-time supporting schools and school leaders with equity-focused school improvement and developing authentic partnerships with families and the community. She is a scholar-activist, racial justice advocate, and youth organizer. Amy is currently pursuing a Doctoral degree in Educational Studies, Innovation, and Reform, with a focus on social justice and equity in education (just passed oral exams last week!). Amy has over 15 years of experience in education, both in the United States and abroad. She brings with her a wealth of experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse students and their families. Her dedication to social justice and equity in education can be seen across many platforms: community involvement, participation on equity-based committees, teaching experience, volunteer work, as well as her research. Through her research, she aims to amplify voices that are historically marginalized, both within our education systems and in society as a whole. Amy shares her own experiences as a Black student navigating mostly white schools, and how that contributed to the work she now does. She discusses lessons learned from teaching in other parts of the world and how those experiences informed her current work.

The main questions answered during this episode center around “How can we do better to support equity in our schools?”

Schools should be great equalizers and a place where everyone feels included. Unfortunately, they don’t. We must ask ourselves, do our students feel seen at school? Are they hiding any aspects of their identity? If they can’t show up as their authentic selves, they most probably won’t be able to achieve what they truly want.

During this episode, we also discuss the relationship teachers must grow with their students. Only by relating to them, listen, and care, can we expect a change in educational spaces.

Thank you for listening to the show. It is such an honor to have these conversations with you. They are necessary and needed, and we are here to do the work.

In today's episode, we have a very particular conversation around Black-ish, an American sitcom television series created by Kenya Barris. Black-ish generates a conversation through the lens of race in daily life and makes us question if comedy is an effective way of talking about what truly matters.

We share:

  • A brief description of the scene that got us talking about a sitcom's impact on a serious matter like race.
  • What we felt while watching it. Was it okay to laugh?
  • How humor might be an effective way to reach out to people and encourage people to research and investigate more on those subjects that matter.
  • Why you should not be quiet when it comes to talking about your point of view.

Some of the most exciting pieces you will find in this episode are also women's points of view when discussing these racial matters and interesting facts regarding the percentage of black and white people who watch the show.

Just like the world, Naked Conversations is shifting and changing. This season is a collection of real, honest, and sometimes messy conversations between two friends. We’ll explore racism, antiracism, interracial friendship, activism, books, films, and more through our different lived experiences. We’ll offer questions and actions to help you go deeper into your exploration of race & culture, find your own inner disruptor, and be a part of the solution. Occasionally, we’ll bring you interviews with others who are experts in this work so we can learn together and do better.

In this episode we share:

  • The first time Erica felt the pain and terror of being called the N-word
  • What triggers Sage when it comes to talking about race
  • How Erica confronted “polite and curious” questions about her ethnicity
  • What shocked Erica about the white people she interacted with during a “racial healing” conversation
  • What Sage’s daughter had to say about the Madam Vice President-Elect, Kamala Harris

Thank you thank you for listening to the show. It is such an honor and joy to have these conversations with you. They are necessary and needed and we are here to do the work.

Happiest of Holidays and New Years to each of you.

Today’s guest is truly one of my favorite people in the world. We’ve been friends since we were neighbors in the dorms our first year in college. She captured my heart quickly with her brilliance and passion for service (as well as her humor). She’s always been fiercely courageous in her pursuit to make a positive impact through trying to answer some of the world’s hardest questions. She speaks 5 languages, is a family doctor, and has a doctoral degree in public health. She’s also a mom of two, living in Tanzania and working to make quality health care accessible to all. I love and respect this woman deeply - enjoy!

Some key talking points in today’s conversation:

  • How being an immigrant shaped her work and life choices
  • Her dream impact to reduce the number of women and children who die in childbirth
  • Her Muslim faith and how it impacts her courageous work
  • How being raised in a multicultural family informed how she sees the world
  • Silencing the inner voices of doubt and fear in order to do meaningful work
  • Living in the communities in which she works, which is now Tanzania
  • Humility and arrogance
  • Re-designing the way health systems function
  • Being a health activist

More about Sanam

Dr. Roder-DeWan is Health Specialist with the UNICEF Tanzania Country Office, a family physician and health systems researcher with expertise in maternal and child health and improving quality of care. She was the lead researcher and writer on improving quality for the Lancet Global Health Commission on High Quality Health Systems in the SDG Era. She is currently a collaborating researcher at Ifakara Health Institute in Dar es Salaam. Dr. Roder-DeWan completed her Doctorate in Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, her Doctorate in Public Health at Harvard and her postgraduate training at Lawrence Family Medicine.

Season 3 is HERE!

Here’s what I want to get into in season 3

  • Courageous curiosity
  • Hard questions and big problems

Honestly, I don’t know exactly what it’s going to look like, because this is a creative project. I’m making it with you. If you have ideas, message me on Instagram or email me sage@sagebhobbs.com

Here’s what I’ve been up to during the podcast pause:

  • I spoke at Google international women’s day - Brave, Naked and Imperfect (episode 43)
  • Spoke to a college class on naked communication and intersection of communication and racism Q & A
  • Developed and facilitated change management and culture shift training to a school staff in transition
  • Executive coaching with school principals
  • Facilitating women’s leadership 9-month program inside a corporation with EW
  • Coaching individual women who want to live, love, and lead more courageously and with greater impact
  • And being a family woman and life long learner…
  • I took my son to NYC
  • Watched my daughter finish kindergarten
  • My son's act in Julius Caesar
  • My husband wraps up his 15th year as a teacher and SEL leader
  • Camping trip in Moab
  • Family visits and birthday parties

Today’s question:

How can I do better at being an advocate, ally, and leader?

White Fragility training with Dr. Robin DiAngelo → so much, I’ll cover in a later episode or blog post (check it out on my site), but one key takeaway is how narrow our definition of racist (individual, intentional, conscious harm) is which exempts us from identifying as racist, when in fact we ALL participate as white folk in the benefits of a racist system

  • Playing Big facilitator training with Tara Mohr

One of my closest friends has been on the board of Exhale to Inhale for years. As someone who is passionate about women’s rights and leadership, who loves yoga, and who has supported teen survivors as a school counselor, I’ve been inspired by their work and have contributed to the organization.

I was curious to learn more about how this important work came into being, and how it has grown to support more and more survivors of violence over time. This conversation with Zoe, the founder and executive director, is honest and real about what the journey has been and why it’s so important for us as women to courageously show up.

Enjoy, share with your friends, and please leave a quick review wherever you listen.

We talk about:

  • How and why she started a non-profit organization while in college
  • The shame and secrecy of domestic violence
  • Exploring privilege, access, and opportunity
  • How yoga changed her life and yoga as a tool for healing
  • The idea of opting-in to leadership, even if you don’t know exactly “how”
  • The #metoo and #timesup movements
  • Intention vs. impact

About Zoe:

Zoë is proud to be the Founder and Executive Director of Exhale to Inhale. Zoë found personal strength and comfort in yoga before completing her yoga teacher training in 2009. As a senior at Barnard College in 2013, Zoë founded Exhale to Inhale. She created the vision for the organization and ensured the correct individuals and systems were in place to make her vision become a reality. Zoë spent three years as a consultant at a boutique consulting firm in New York City, before gratefully returning full time to Exhale to Inhale. She is committed to curiosity, and to choosing joy and gratitude. Zoë is thankful to all of her teachers both on and off the mat.

We’re really not given much permission to slow down and think about how our life is actually going. We’re taught to keep going, doing, being busy. It’s almost a badge of honor to be overwhelmed – it means you have a full life.

But the new year can be a chance to pause. Just for a moment. Catch our breath. Look at our life and our choices.

**In this show I’m talking about:**

 * 5 ways to manage the stress and overwhelm of this season (or any transitional and stressful time)
  • The 4 ways I approach the new year (and why I don’t care if you do it my way, but what I DO care about)

Thank you thank you for listening to the show. It is such an honor and joy to have these conversations with you. I love it (even though I’m “talking to myself,” it is SO fun and gives me hope for the world.”

I met today’s guest in an elevator and we’ve been friends ever since. It sounds absurd, and it’s completely true. I was immediately drawn to Natasha’s smile, big-heartedness, and brilliance. She’s incredibly humble- while working hard to champion women’s success, support thriving leaders, champion local non-profits, and raising three young children.

Through all of her work, both at Google and at Chai for Charity, she creates community with a mission for the greater good. Natasha is truly playing big in life, while being very relatable and honest. There’s a nugget in here for everyone… about how we show up in life in meaningful ways, moving forward despite perfectionism, juggling family and work, creating community, and more.

We talk about:

  • Expanding our definition of giving back: 4 categories of contribution and donation
  • Women’s leadership development inside of Google
  • The Urdu word for “tea” and what it means about gathering, comfort, and community
  • Her family’s immigration story from Pakistan and how it informed who she is
  • Being the first in her family to go to college, and the values her parents taught her
  • Juggling a full-time career, raising 3 boys, and starting a non-profit
  • Engaging her husband and children in her vision of service
  • Struggling with perfectionism and how it can hold us back
  • THE 3 things that I want people to feel
  • Why it’s hard to ask for help

More about Natasha:

Natasha Wright is the Founder and Executive Director of Chai for Charity, a nonprofit that connects private donors to charities working to help women thrive locally. Natasha also manages executive development programs at Google where she arms Google's senior leaders with the tools to navigate ambiguity, and confidently lead their teams through complex challenges.

She also leads Colorado's women@Google effort which offers development opportunities, facilitates connections and builds a community of professional women who empower and inspire each other. Natasha has been with Google for 12 years, and previously worked in the nonprofit affordable housing field in Los Angeles where she also earned Sociology and Urban Planning degrees from UCLA. She and her husband are raising 3 small men in Lafayette, Colorado.

  • Ethical leadership- what it means and why it matters
  • Applying inclusivity, curiosity, and authenticity to our work environments

It’s Thanksgiving week in the U.S. For me, this holiday is a reason to gather with people I love, leisurely eat, talk, laugh, and connect. I always feel a deep and real sense of gratitude on this day - aware of how much richness I have in my life (food, health, shelter, love).

I also know how valuable it is to connect to feeling grateful the other 364 days of the year, or at least more often than not. But it’s not always easy.

On today’s show, I’m sharing 5 ways that I do gratitude in my life that have really made a huge difference for me in my sense of joy, peace, and purpose. It’s practical and actionable. And has been really powerful for me (and those I’ve worked with).

I also decided to open up my journal, literally, and share some of the things I’ve written on gratitude over the last several months. What I’m actually grateful for revealed…

This Fall, I attended a beautiful event with a bunch of leaders from various industries, whose work has common theme of positive social impact. On the first evening, at the “meet and greet” gathering, I had the special opportunity to spend time with Seane Corn (yoga activist superstar and Jersey girl). In our conversation, she told me that I MUST check out the work of her dear friend, Dr. Melody Moore. Of course, I was intrigued and did some googling.

I was immediately inspired by Dr. Moore’s work with girls and women about body image, trauma, self-expression. She is a brilliant, big hearted, courageous leader. Our conversation is extraordinary - covering topics from body image to leadership to humility and more.

Here’s what we get into:

  • How and why she created Embody Love Movement, inspired by teen girls
  • Recovery from eating disorders and body dysmorphia
  • The epidemic of “general not enoughness”
  • 3 big hits that created her not-enoughness (hint: being a girl, body-centered family, being not-straight in a conservative Christian family)
  • How a yoga activism training launched a calling for change
  • A curriculum written on a barf bag on the plane, and how it started an international movement
  • Using our past experiences to build resilience and connection
  • Yoga and meditation created fertile soil for her work
  • Learning humility through launching an organization “without skills”
  • Clawing out of a shame spiral: self-compassion and self-forgiveness
  • “Sneak attacks” of insidious thoughts women have about their bodies
  • Being curious on our spiritual path and where our physical body fits in
  • Women boldly owning their leadership qualities

More about Dr. Melody Moore:

Melody Moore, Ph.D., RYT is a social entrepreneur, a licensed Clinical Psychologist, yoga teacher, author, and speaker. She is the founder of the Embody Love Movement Foundation, a non-profit whose mission is to empower girls and women to celebrate their inner beauty, commit to kindness, and contribute to meaningful change in the world. She has trained 20 trainers and over 500 facilitators to activate the mission of Embody Love Movement across the US, Europe, and Australia.

Dr. Moore’s work has been featured in the books Yoga and Body Image (eds. Klein and Guest-Jelly) and Yoga and Eating Disorders: Ancient Healing for Modern Illness (eds. Costin and Kelly) as well as National Geographic Magazine, Yoga Journal, Yoga International, Mantra, Elephant Journal, and Origin Magazine. She created the collegiate BodyImage3D program for Tri-Delta, which is experienced by every sophomore member.

She is a National Eating Disorder Association’s advice columnist, an advisor for World Muse, and a faculty member for Off the Mat, Into the World, a social-profit that empowers leaders to become conscious activists. In 2015, she was featured as one of ten “Game Changers” by the Yoga Journal and chosen as one of 100 “Most Influential Global Leaders Empowering Women Worldwide” by EBW2020.

This is a conversation about how you show up in the world, build your relationships, and make the impact you want to make.

We humans are messy, lovely, amazing beings. We’re not meant to live in isolation, but in collaboration and connection. Your personal happiness, professional success, and the impact of your time on the planet are all related to the quality of your relationships.

**Let’s dive in. I’m talking about:**

 * Knowing what you really, really want (or as close to it as possible)
  • Connecting with your pure potential (and what that could make possible in your life)
  • The power of committing to what you really want (again and again, moment to moment)
  • Mustering up loads of everyday courage

I met Angela through the longest hug I’ve ever shared with a stranger (more on that on the show)… standing by a river, in the mountains, under a tent, listening to Blaine Bartlett speak about compassionate capitalism. If it sounds kind of out there, it was. It was also amazing and I felt an immediate connection to Angela and her work on the planet.

I later heard her briefly share her story before performing her music, and I was hooked. Her voice was so deep and real. Her storytelling honest and vulnerable. And her story itself – of the agonizing soul searching and leaving her Mormon upbringing – was incredibly compelling.

I know you’ll find her wisdom, courage, and music as profound and haunting as I do.

**In this convo we get into:**

 * How being raised in an observant Mormon family in the Philippines impacted her life
  • The “moment of reckoning” when she began to consider that all she believed maynot be true
  • The darkness and despair of leaving family and faith – and how she moved through it
  • Music as an outlet for healing and self-discovery in her life
  • Her marriage, and how it nearly collapsed with her belief system
  • Exploring spirituality, faith, and friendship outside of religion
  • Sobbing and Songwriting

    More about Angela:

Angela Soffe is an Americana singer, songwriter, and musician. She is the lead singer and songwriter of the award-winning Angela Soffe Band based in the Pacific Northwest. Her latest album, ‘Second Wind’ is the result of a darkness-into-light narrative, and marks a brave return to music. Raised by American parents in Southeast Asia, the artist weaves a glowing musical tapestry inspired by the flavors of her past. The weighty topics of her new album are exquisitely offset by soothing musicality, an amalgam of folk, pop, and bluegrass with touches of new age and classical music. Throughout the album, Angela’s voice exudes a sweet emotional grace at the intersection of defiance, wonderment, longing, and vulnerability. Highlights on this soulful journey of an album include “Rocks,” “Freedom,” and “Second Wind.”

I was scared to do this episode. But I had to. I’m talking about telling our stories — in real and vulnerable ways.

This episode is an imperfect, but honest, conversation that was inspired by the recent news coverage of the Kavanaugh confirmation and its relationship to the rising up of women’s voices.

 **Specifically, this show covers:**

 * Women’s historical bravery – from the suffrage movement to the me too movement
  • A Disney moment that caused me shame and fear… and how my mom handled it
  • The importance of being heard
  • The value of bravery and collective action
  • How can you break your own silence, to both gather and give support?
  • How we’ve been conditioned, particularly about our bodies and sexuality
  • Parenting a son and a daughter for a safer and more just world

    Resources mentioned:

Susie and I met at a local Mom’s Demand Action meeting, shortly after the Parkland shooting. We were sitting next to each other in a crowded room of passionate folks, when she turned to me and said, “I know you from somewhere…” It was one of those strange, meant-to-be moments, when we realized that we’d first “met” online through a workshop I was facilitating, but then crossed paths in person.

She told me very briefly about her work with Brave Over Perfect, and I was immediately drawn to both this idea as well as Susie’s warmth and passion. We ran into each other again a week later at an intimate fundraising event for the Pachamama Alliance with Lynne Twist, and again a couple weeks later at small nordic center a couple of hours from our town, when we parked our cars nose-to-nose in the lot.

After our third chance encounter in a few weeks, we knew we had to get together and learn more about each other. I’m SO glad I did, because Susie is incredible and her story will inspire you as it has me.

**In today’s convo, we talk about:**

 * How our relationship to courage changes over time
  • Winning ultramarathons, running an international adventure travel company, and raising children
  • Confronting her very real mortality and diagnosis: the wake up call
  • The moment in her struggle when she chose “joy over fear, and brave over perfect”
  • How losing her voice gave her back her true self
  • The impact of her cancer, and her choices, on her husband and kids
  • Being of service in the world
  • Where to start with your own brave over perfect journey
  • Writing a memoir

    More about Susie:

Susie Caldwell Rinehart is an award-winning author, TEDx speaker, champion ultrarunner, a mom, and a brainstem tumor survivor. Welcome back to Season 2!

I’ve got some incredible interviews lined up for all of you, as well as intimate solo show conversations.

Solo shows are me doing some storytelling about what I’m experiencing in my own attempt to live a naked life. I’ve found storytelling to be the best way to really connect with people, learn from each other, and be real. So that’s what this is about -- I share stories, lessons, and insights that I’m learning from living a courageous, naked life of impact and connection.

It’s like going out for lunch with that girlfriend whom you get super real with.

In today’s show I’m get into:

  • The challenges of transitions (and what I do to manage the stress and emotions)
  • New experiences that stretch us (specifically lessons learned from doing my first wilderness walk with shamans)
  • Igniting your impact - a new direction for my work and the show (including meeting Seane Corn, learning about conscious capitalism, and reconnecting with deep need to make positive social impact through my work)

I hope you enjoy it and get exactly what you need from listening!

If you have been following the show, you may know that this summer, we took a trip of a lifetime. We spent six weeks enjoying amazing places, meeting friends old and new, and doing things that we have never done before. My husband and I wanted to do this trip even before we had children. We wanted to show them the world in a way that works for our lifestyle, our budgets, our timeframe. And this summer, after some planning and some creativity, we did!

In today's episode I'm going to share with you the lessons from those six amazing weeks and what you can take away from stepping outside of your comfort zone, pushing your edges, following a dream, being in a place that's unfamiliar.

1 - We are taught fear. We're taught to fear other cultures. We're taught to field people we don't understand or languages that we don't speak or religions that aren't our own.

I invite you to consider - what are the things you have been taught to fear?

2 - Traveling has given me empathy, perspective, and what little patience I have. Empathy, patience and perspective, have given me a worldview that I hope is more open hearted and open minded than it otherwise would have been had.

There are always opportunities to stretch beyond what we know. There are always opportunities to stretch beyond what we know and to grow beyond what we fear if we are willing to step into them.

How can you do that a little bit more in your life?

3 - The lifelong millennium long seeking, searching quest about being present. We struggle with this a lot in our fast moving, fast thinking, doing, doing, striving, striving culture.

Can I really, really be here now? Can I really, really feel the joy, the deep joy? Could I let that in?

4 - Look up. It is an automatic way to reengage that sense of presence and the sense of appreciation and observation and noticing.

5 - People are people living their lives no matter where you go. This looks different in some ways and in a big city you can see a different way of life within a matter of blocks.

And this idea of our common humanity just like touches my heart deeply and the trip just kept reminding me of that.

6 - For the moms and Dads who are listening, my kids can do things. If you're not a parent, apply it to yourself - you can do things that you might not think you can do! I know that sounds obvious and silly and trite, but it's amazing to watch somebody's confidence expand as you do hard things.

In trying new things, my children found a new capacity for their own capabilities.

7 - We can prioritize how we spend our time, money, and energy at all levels. I'm also a huge advocate of our own self agency and our own power of choice. We do not all get the same opportunities unfortunately, and that is unfair and it is true, but we all get some self agency in terms of how we relate to our circumstances and how we use our time, how we manage our thoughts and how we use our energy and where we give our energy, where we put our attention and how we use our money.

Are you spending your time, your money and your energy accordingly? Sit with that for a second and see if it's time to reevaluate or reassess that.

8 - It is all about connection to ourselves, to our vitality, our voice, our sense of purpose and impact and to others. The benefits of cultivating meaningful relationships are extraordinary, including sometimes the opportunity to step into others' lives and other parts of the world.

9 - Transition can be hard as hell y'all. It can be hard. It's hard for me sometimes it's very hard for my children sometimes. You got to give yourself some grace. We all need to give ourselves some grace. If we're giving ourselves some grace, we have space to give others some as well

How can I be kinder to myself right now? How can I show myself some grace while I move through transitions?

10 - How can I and how you you bring that sense of freedom and presence and courage and grace into our daily lives? How can we bring some of that newness and freshness and some of those lessons we learn when we step outside of our bubble and we step outside of our comfort zone and integrate them into our daily existence.

That's what I want to leave you with. If you can just pause today and listen to these lessons again, if you need to ask yourself those questions around how can you show yourself more kindness and grace?

How can you step outside of your daily routine and do something that is slightly uncomfortable or slightly edgy for you and see what shows up for you?

--

For those of you who listen regularly, Yay. Thank you. I love you and appreciate you deeply.

This marks the end of Season 1 of the Naked Conversations Podcast! We will be lining up more amazing women in the show. Let me know if you have topics you want me to talk about, who you might like me to interview. You can always get in touch though Instagram or email me at sage@sagebhobbs.com.

Episode 40! Whoo! I am really pumped that the podcast has gotten this far, and I’m just going to celebrate that for a minute! And I encourage you too, to celebrate where you’re making progress, where you’re growing.

What you’ll hear today is something I’ve never done on the show before. I’m going to actually read a chapter from Naked Communication: Courageously Create the Relationships You Really Want, the book that I released in October of 2016. After reading the chapter, I’m going to tell you a few more stories about what I thought regarding this topic since writing the book almost two years ago.

We’ll touch on a lot of points in this very short chapter, but at the heart of it is that “The happiness and fulfillment you seek does not exist in a vacuum. It lives in relationship with others.” I still believe in that today as much as I did two years ago. Our relationships really are the life force behind our experience of being alive.

How we communicate matters and only you have control over how you express yourself in all areas of your life.

**Key Points from Chapter 2 of Naked Communication:**

 * We have to understand ourselves best if we expect anybody else to understand us and relate to us the way we want to be related.
  • It’s important to really get clear on how you’re currently communicating and know that you can tweak, adjust, or transform completely how you communicate in your life.
  • You have to consider the myriad ways that you already communicate, not just in conflicts – though that’s a key area, but in expressing love, offering your ideas and making requests.
  • The clearer you are about your own communication, the better you’ll be at building awesome relationships.
  • Knowing yourself leads to growth and balance.
  • All day every day you are communicating.
  • Communication from others are just words, not truths. You can choose to adopt them when they serve and inspire you or let them go when they’re bullshit and keep you disconnected.
  • How you communicate directly impacts how you show up in the world around you.
  • Relationships are the foundation of everything in our lives.
  • You need to know how you use your voice and your natural communication style so that you can use it effectively. To wield it for good, wield it for change, and wield it for connection.

You want to be a more powerful and effective communicator. Somebody who builds bridges instead of walls, brings people closer together, who understands different worldviews, different perspectives, different experiences, who understands how to nurture, who understands how to empower or champion or advocate.

You can go deeper with this by reading the book or by listening to more episodesof the podcast.

Thanks for listening! Share with the people in your life if this landed for you!

Being able to put myself in the orbit of people, books, podcasts, and other things that light me up and fire me up activates me to make things happen.

In this episode, I will share the three things that is firing me up right now to really embrace our humanity. These three things make me feel inspired despite all that has been going on in the US and around the world. They get me connected to my own inner inspiration and get activated get into action. They exemplify courage, strength, and vulnerability – what Naked Conversations is really about.

Can we be courageous? Can we dig deep into our own strength? Can we be vulnerable and real and show up as we really are? Can we use our voice to make a difference? Can we express ourselves to have more love and affinity with the people in our lives?

That is what I wish for you. For all of us.

**In today’s show I talk about:**

 * The experience and emotions brought up by being at the Michael Franti & Spearhead concert
  • Michael’s amazing gift of creating a sense of unity and togetherness
  • Being able to feel hope, joy, and possibility in the world without minimizing what is broken
  • How inspiring Michael’s ability is to connect all who he is with hope, activism, and calling out our common humanity
  • The very courageous book Educated written by Tara Westover about trauma, pain, and manipulation she experienced
  • At the end, Tara found a way to create her own path and still has a lot of love for the people who did her a lot of harm
  • Lynne Twist, a woman whose presence breaks me wide open. A woman who is deeply committed to the work she is doing on the planet creating a common good in humanity
  • When you are committed to something bigger than yourself, it is easier to find the courage to follow through

It takes courage to live a truly naked life, to know yourself deeply (including the parts you don’t like that much or want to change), and then to share that truly naked self with others.

People never stop communicating, even in silence. And I’ve always wondered how we can learn to communicate to deeply connect with the people around us. This thought has been the foundation of my book, Naked Communication.

What exactly is naked communication?

Naked communication is deepening your connections in all your relationships so you can have the love and fulfillment that you crave. It’s about expressing yourself inna courageous, clean, clear, and compassionate way – stripped from self-doubt and uncertainty.

Before building connections, you must start by knowing yourself on a deeper level. I know that this requires courage and it can be frightening to really look inside and open yourself to others. But as you do, you will feel so much more freedom.

**In today’s show I talk about:**

 * What naked communication is and how can one live a naked life
  • What role courage and commitment play in developing deeper connections with people
  • How I’m committed to helping women in owning their voice and making a difference in the world
  • How our circumstances dictate our reality, but we should be constantly trying to explore our privilege and create change
  • How communication can be a tool for connection

Summer has always been a special time for me… and as many of you know, my family and I are fulfilling a dream this summer to travel together outside the country. So, more days than not, I’ll show you something of our life in London, Catalunia, and France… as well as what it’s like to travel with kids, juggle working from afar.

This season of the podcast will be a series of solo shows all about relationships, communication, and things that inspire me to learn and grow in my own naked journey. This is going to be exciting!

In today’s show I’m walking you through the how, why, and what I learned about writing Naked Communication: Courageously Create the Relationships You Really Want.

How I wrote this book. We talk about the things that I had to do to be able to finish writing the book in only around 4 months. I share the actual steps I took, both inner and outer work, when I came up against my own stuff.

Then comes the WHY. The heart of writing the book was wanting more people than I could ever coach personally to have a super affordable way to learn how to know themselves better, love themselves more, and create incredible relationships.

I strongly believe that you are capable of…

  • Asking for what you really want
  • Finding courage to be your true self
  • Finding ways to solve conflicts confidently
  • Keeping your fears of being judged for asking too much
  • Having true connections – the quality of our relationships impact our lives in profound ways personally and professionally
  • Being able to stop doubting yourself, your desires, and your worth

What did I learn from writing the book?

  • I have doubt like everyone else about being good enough, still!
  • Perfectionism is a habit that dies hard
  • I love to create!
  • I create things and then move on to something else

Which pieces of those things you can take with you? Just be honest about it with yourself. Where could you go deeper? Where could you be more you? Where could you be more naked?

If you want to deepen your mastery in all areas of your relationships, you can get my book Naked Communication here.

Whoa, this is a deep one. Ali and I were connected through a mutual friend because of some common history… cancer survivors, Penn grads, podcast hosts, shake-things-up types.

This could have been several episodes, as we discuss some HUGE topics from health care to power structures to privilege to patriarchy to emotional eating to cancer and more. Ali’s incredibly passionate and knowledgeable. She works in the health and wellness industry to disrupt systems that aren’t working and help people advocate for their own healing.

In our conversation we get intense, but also with humor and hope. Ali jokes, “Hi I’m Ali. I want to burn down the patriarchy. What do you do?” We decided we need to host our own style of cocktail party, where we talk about real things that matter to us and the world. It’s that kind of show today… enjoy and please share it with your people.

**In this convo we get into:**

 * Speaking truth to power
  • Childhood cancer and pesticide exposure
  • The “nesting dolls” of capitalism, patriarchy, white supremacy and AND our health
  • The inequitable systems and structures of why people are in poor health
  • Our battles with food, eating, and our bodies and a historical perspective
  • Binge eating and emotional eating
  • The public health injustice with food deserts and poverty
  • How we’re not social-media-cocktail-party types
  • Adverse Childhood Experience scores (ACE) and our adult food relationships

    More about Ali:

Ali Shapiro is the founder of Truce with Food®, host of the top-ranked podcast Insatiable, a holistic nutritionist, integrated health coach and rebel with a serious cause. She’s academically, practically, and empathetically aware of how the medical system, diet culture and body positivity movements all have their own flavor of crazy.

She created her Truce with Food method while in graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania where she earned her Masters in Organizational Dynamics, which is like getting an MBA in the change process, where she drew from her decade plus of working with real life clients and her own personal healing journey from having cancer as a teenager. Her work has been featured in Wall Street Journal, Prevention, Redbook, Huffington Post, the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philly Magazine and was a regular contributor to NBC Philadelphia for four years.

Talking to people is truly one of my favorite ways to spend my time. My friends, kids, clients, total strangers, I’ll talk with anyone. Since I was a young, the only thing that has ever held my attention for long is people… how they think, their interests, talents, potential, and motivations.

I’ve found that the quality of our relationships directly impacts both our personal fulfillment, and our professional success.

And yet, our relationships can also be super challenging. They can bring disappointment and stress. Think about how you can be set off by your mother. Or find yourself silenced with your boss. Or long for more intimacy with your partner.

In today’s show I’m walking you through how to be a better communicator, so you can really:

Ask for what you want authentically and effectively.
Feel more confident in your voice.
Be more connected to all the people in your life.

I go over the 4 key steps to making requests, so you can feel more ease and freedom in you you communicate. I give you examples and stories to guide you along the way.

Everything I talk about is covered in more depth in the guide that you can get for free at www.sagebhobbs.com.

And, of course, my book Naked Communication has even more support for how to really deepen your mastery in all areas of your relationships. You can get that here.

I talk to so many truly bright, capable, accomplished women who still struggle with self-doubt, imposter syndrome, or worthiness. Often, they’re outward appearance doesn’t match their inner feelings. Many struggle with the deep self-confidence they so crave, and that others assume they have.

I connected with today’s guest, Sheena Yap, because her exploration of women’s self-confidence intrigued me. While her passion to boost women’s self-confidence is inspiring, I was really touched by her desire to raise up the voices of Asian women, to bust old stereotypes and messages of how Asian women are taught to behave.

Sheena graciously taught me things about her experience as a multi-cultural, Asian woman that broadened my understanding. She’s kind and honest and deeply committed to her work with The Tao of Self-Confidence. Listen and share with your friends

**In today’s convo, we talk about:**

 * The importance of busting Asian women stereotypes
  • Podcasting as a way to do good in the world
  • Simple ways to actually boost your self-confidence
  • The story behind “The Tao of Self-Confidence”

    More about Sheena:

Sheena Yap Chan is a blogger, podcaster, self confidence consultant, author and speaker whose sole purpose, drive and passion is to help build women’s self confidence from the ground up. She currently inspires women everyday through her podcast called The Tao of Self Confidence where she interviews various women about their inner journey to self confidence.

My kids are truly some of my best teachers. It may sound cliche, but they school me daily. On today’s show I’m talking about how an interaction with my daughter was a huge “A-HA” moment for me.

It was really another opportunity for me to get even more real about my blind spots, to peel back another layer and get more naked, and to look closely at how my own conditioning still impacts what I say, how I show up in the world, and how I raise my kids.

Listen in to explore your own internal conditioning, gender stereotypes, and implicit bias… so you can break free even further, become more real and self-expressed, and be intentional about how you live your life.

I met Queirra in Vegas, but it’s not as shady as that may sound… Queirra and I met at a public speaking training for women leaders. I think we were meant to meet, because we were the two winners of an online speaking contest (and I never join contests!) to attend this event with one of my mentor-friends (and a former podcast guest), Alexia Vernon.

I was immediately drawn to Queirra’s intelligence, poise, big-heartedness, and humor. She’s very real and honest, and deeply in service of women really using their ambition to create thriving lives and careers they love. When I started the Naked Conversations podcast, I knew I wanted to have Queirra on to share her story and wisdom.

**In today’s convo, we talk about:**

 * What is ambition? And how’s it different for women
  • Being a “triple minority: young, Black, and female”
  • How, and why, we must take off our “superwoman capes”
  • The power of vulnerability
  • Intuition, spirituality, and ambition

    More about Queirra:

Queirra is a Professional Speaker and Certified Coach who helps successful leaders reinvent their relationship to their ambition. She has inspired business and professional women’s audiences with her dynamic keynotes, TED-style talks and interactive workshops to embrace a new style of ambition and step into their mogul mindset.

Before becoming a coach, Queirra led teams as a Marketing Director for more than ten years. She secretly geeks out on (okay, maybe not so secretly) productivity, personal branding and high performance. She holds the Professional Certified Coach (PCC) credential from the International Coach Federation (ICF) and a B.S. in Marketing from George Mason University.

This episode is personal. I recorded it when I was really sitting with some questions around “enough-ness” in my life, and in the lives of the women I support. It feels like our culture in the West is to keep driving and striving. A more, more, more undercurrent that sometimes propels me forward in positive ways, and sometimes messes with my sense of joy and satisfaction.

I talk about several questions that haunt me.
A mantra I use to regain my sense of grounding and gratitude.
The issue of privilege and access to opportunity.
The grain of sand in my oyster shell.

And other thoughts on my own journey to uncover how I can live a fully self-expressed, satisfying, and fulfilling live by my own definition…and how you can too.

I hope you enjoy it and pass it along to others on this “naked” exploration.

When Sara and I met through a mutual friend, as she interviewed me for her Shameless Mom Academy Podcast, the conversation flowed immediately. Sara was so honest, open, and generous.

She shared her stories with heart and vulnerability, something I find to be very difficult for many. She also went out of her way to share her podcasting wisdom with me, to guide me as I launched this show. That woman-to-woman support is priceless, and one of my favorite things about creating this podcast… meeting amazing women who want to support each other, and the broader community, to shine brightly.

Enjoy this real, raw, “naked” conversation with Sara Dean. Email me at support@sagebhobbs.com or message me on Instagram @sagebhobbs to let me know your thoughts.

 **We talk about:**

 * What it means to be shameless
  • The body image continuum… from loathing to loving
  • Her “fit-spiration” purge on social media
  • The power of doing hard things
  • Imposter syndrome and self-doubt

Sometimes it’s so easy to bored with our lives and disconnected from our vitality. We can fall into routines and habits that are the mundane, the blah.

I can’t tell you how many women I talk to that feel like they’ve lost their SPARK, their passion, their drive or creativity. Bright and capable women, who want to reconnect with themselves, who want to fuel their fire (or the small embers that are left).

It doesn’t always take a huge, wild, revolution to find our spark. Sometimes we can find our way back to ourselves by trying new things, by paying attention to what IS working well in our lives, and by taking “small” actions that light us up.

Today’s show is me jamming on 4 things that are lighting me up right now, making me feel connected to parts of my spirit and creativity that I’d been neglecting.

This conversation with Julie almost felt like the continuation of an ongoing conversation, even though it was the first time we’d actually talked! Our professional backgrounds, passions, and experiences kept overlapping in unexpected ways. I had to contain myself from interrupting all the time to say, “Oh my gosh, yes!”

Julie has a calming presence, with loads of experience and wisdom to share. I loved hearing the stories of how her work has evolved, how she’s been shaped by motherhood, and how her own leadership keeps expanding as she expands Mother’s Quest.

We talk about so much, from personal challenges, to losing ourselves in motherhood, to the power of storytelling to feel our common humanity, to activism. Listen, enjoy, and share away.

We talk about: * An inspiring definition of courage (from a 14 year old!) * What it means to live an EPIC life * The moment that moved her to activism * Using growth mindset to explore challenging topics * Leadership and permission * An incredible story of two birds in a her house, and their timely lesson

More about Julie: Julie Neale is a life and leadership coach and a facilitator. She’s also a community builder, dedicated to creating understanding and connections across differences. After a 20-year career as a leader in youth-serving nonprofit organizations, Julie turned her focus to coaching, training at the Coaches Training Institute, and facilitating a group process known as “reflection” for youth development professionals.

She founded her for-purpose venture, Mother’s Quest, to provide inspiration, coaching and community for herself and other mothers who want to live what she calls an E.P.I.C. life. She hosts the Mother’s Quest Podcast, where she shares her own and other women’s stories about the transformative experience of parenting at mothersquest.com.

In the fall of 2017, she launched the Women Podcasters in Solidarity Initiative as a twice yearly effort to raise awareness and dollars for social justice issues through the power of podcasting. The first focus of the Initiative was on Anti-Racism and the Movement for Black Lives, with over a dozen women podcasters contributing. Julie recorded three powerful episodes on this topic, one with human rights attorney Nicole Lee, a second with “Rad Women” author and activist Kate Schatz, and a third with the co-founder of Mothers Against Police Brutality.

Julie received her Masters in City Planning, Community Development from UC Berkeley and a BA in Communication Studies from UCLA, where she met her husband. She currently lives with her husband and two boys in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Some of my best friends, and several of my aunts, have always actively called themselves feminists. From being women studies majors to activists, they’ve identified with that title.

While I’ve usually shared their values and perspectives, I’ve championed similar causes or messages, the word feminist wasn’t something I claimed until recently.

I’ve got some stories to share from the past 6 months of my life that have stood out for me. Since going into business for myself I’ve seen how many women struggle with self-doubt. How it holds them back from sharing their ideas, from taking risks.

And, I’m offering you some ways to explore your own relationship to feminism (and internalized sexism) so you can show up more fully, more powerfully, and more authentically… the “naked” way.

Questions to explore: * How might a man respond to this? * How do you hold yourself back from sharing your idea, offering your input or talent, because of self-doubt, not “enough,” waiting until you’re ready? * What would it take for you to feel ready enough?

How can we do “healing” better? How can we approach physical challenges with more grace, self-compassion, and support? How can we see pain as an opportunity for growth and wellness?

These are some of the questions that today’s guest, Sera Snyder of Healing U., has asked herself since being diagnosed with a rare abdominal tumor a decade ago. She dove deep into her own physical, spiritual, and emotional healing in order to move through the pain she uncovered from her illness.

I loved this conversation with Sera because she’s so passionate, so fired up about helping women heal together, and so honest about her personal struggles. From perfectionism to eating disorders to loneliness… we get into all of it. If you find it as inspiring as I did, please share it with your friends and subscribe to the show (Thank you!)

We talk about: * How a Desmoid tumor ignited a healing journey * What it means to really feel like you’re enough, just as you are * Steps to deal with our anger, and other emotions * Ending her war with her body and eating disorder recovery * Freedom from isolation and loneliness * Healthcare and the healing process

More about Sera:

Sera is on a mission to use her voice, experience and passion for wellness to inspire healthy change. As a survivor of a rare abdominal tumor at the age of 26, Sera uses her life’s story to challenge the way we honor our personal health and overall wellness.

Sera is the founder of Healing U. Women’s Wellness, an educational community created to help women heal from the physical, emotional and spiritual pain that comes from experiencing health challenges. Healing U. offers in-person retreats, virtual programs and one day workshops.

She also founded Running for Answers (RFA), a running event that brings together a community to raise money and awareness for desmoid tumors (the cancer she experienced). The race has raised over $1.5 million for desmoid research and ignited a movement in this rare disease community. Her story to build and grow this initiative has been featured in USA Today Health & Wellness, Men’s Fitness, on the Dr. Oz Show and CBS Philadelphia.

Sera also uses her organizational, business and marketing talents to help innovative healthcare practitioners serve patients, like her, who need expertise on their healing journey. Sera is known for using an authentic and simple approach to increasing revenue, developing referral streams that convert, and building partnerships.

Sera currently lives in Charlottesville, Virginia. Between passionately sharing her enthusiasm about health & wellness, you can find her laughing with her closest friends, sipping green tea while reading a good memoir or hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

You can connect with Sera, learn more about her work, and grab her FREE e-book, “Find the Healing Your Body Really Needs” at www.healingu.org

So often I talk to bright, capable, big-hearted women who are struggling with the issue of “enoughness.” The question often sounds like, “Yeah, but what is my purpose?”

I fully want each and every purpose to have a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction in their lives. I want them to feel that their life has purpose and meaning, in whatever way they define it.

In this episode, I get into the sticky topic of our purpose and our privilege. After years of reading and learning about my own privilege, and moving through guilt and responsibility, I’m still peeling back the layers… getting more “naked.” I want everyone to have an experience of life purpose, and I recognize that we haven’t all been granted the same opportunities.

As always, I’m sharing personal stories and insights, along with clear questions and resources to help you dig deeper into your own definition of “life purpose” and the messages you received around that idea based on your place on the privilege continuum.

This show is a particularly naked one for me. I don’t have the answers, but I want to be courageous enough to ask the questions.

We all get to a point in our lives when we can’t seem to get a grip on every detail that’s going on. We tend to drift. We tend to disconnect. We tend to judge ourselves. How do we get back on our feet when this happens?

As what Jack Kornfield, Buddhist Instructor, said, *If your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete.”* We all try to be compassionate to the people that we love, but the bigger question is, can we all give compassion to ourselves? How come it’s harder for us to be more forgiving to the wrong things that we do? How come it is harder for us to shrug off the past? How come it is harder for us to love ourselves more?

Let’s explore together how we can all give ourselves a little gift of compassion.

In today’s episode I’m jamming on how we manage change in our lives… because it’s everywhere, all the time, across the board. And we often resist it. It feels uncomfortable or scary. We can feel out of control and stressed as changes arise.

But what if we could approach change in a way that really works for us?

What if we could have a dynamic relationship to the unpredictability of life, to the zigs and zags, to the ups and downs?

So, I tell stories of Monday morning meltdowns, control freak tendencies, new job stressors, yoga for the “seasoned” folks, juggling way too many roles, and more… all in the ways we dance with change in our lives.

And WHY? I get into why the heck I want YOU to shift your relationship to change. What’s in it for you (and the rest of us) when you make change your new BFF?

When I met Alison Malmon a few months ago at a dinner party she was an understated, new-to-town, mom-of-three… who was also a totally inspiring leader in the movement to de-stigmatize mental health nationwide.

I was amazed by her humility, and brilliance, as she spoke about starting a nonprofit, Active Minds, 15 years ago in the aftermath of her brother’s suicide. She’s a total powerhouse, driven by her desire to change the conversation about mental health and truly save lives.

Her work is so deeply needed, her stories very honest and real, and her passion palpable.

Please listen and share. Let’s help break the silence, and end the shame, around mental health.

We talk about: * Her brother’s suicide and how she dealt with it * Creating a movement through her work * The power of storytelling * Her definition of leadership and what it really takes * How to talk about mental health in ways that really help * Motherhood and leadership

More about Alison and Active Minds:

Connect with Alison, read real stories, find support, or get involved in this important work at http://activeminds.org/

Alison Malmon is the founder and Executive Director of Active Minds, Inc., the leading national organization that uses students as the driving force to change the perception about mental health on college campuses. Active Minds engages tens of thousands of student leaders nationwide and promotes a unified national voice for young adults in the mental health awareness movement.

Alison formed the organization following the suicide of her only sibling, twenty-two year old brother Brian Malmon. Wanting to combat the stigma that had caused her brother to suffer in silence and ultimately take his own life, she created a group on her campus at the University of Pennsylvania that promoted an open, enlightened dialogue around the issues.

Alison has been named a “Top 15 Global Emerging Social Innovator,” Washingtonian of the Year, and a Woman of Distinction by the American Association of University Women. She has also received the Destigmatization Award from the National Council of Behavioral Healthcare, Tipper Gore Remember the Children Award, inaugural Young Leadership Award from the National Mental Health Research Association (NARSAD), and more. Alison has been profiled as a “Person you Should Know” on CNN, and in stories in the New York Times, Washington Post, Inside Higher Ed, and Glamour Magazine.

In addition to her work at Active Minds, Alison sits on the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Consumer/Survivor Subcommittee, Suicide Prevention Resource Center Steering Committee, and Crisis Text Line Advisory Committee.

She is the mother of three young girls, and in her spare time, Alison loves flying 23ft in the air at the Trapeze School in Washington, DC.

In today’s show I tell stories of dance-a-thons, treks to Mt. Kilimanjaro, hoagie drop-offs, and burrito deliveries… all in service of making a difference, before I even realized that’s what I was being “taught.”

As we’re all reflecting on the past year, and the year ahead, I’ve been thinking of a couple of guiding questions for myself:

  • Did I make the difference I wanted to?
  • How can I increase my impact in the year ahead?

I fundamentally believe that all of us are inherently valuable AND that we have value to contribute back to our families and communities.

It’s not about being perfect or saintly or better-than. It’s not about a FB post that shows how “good” we are. It’s not about proving or besting.

It’s about using our strengths, skills, and power to really be leaders in our lives (and make the world a better place along the way). It’s about seeing ourselves in the biggest, fullest light possible and what we’re truly capable of creating in our lives. That’s what this episode it about. I can’t wait to hear what comes up for you when you listen.

About a year ago I entered an online contest, something that I’d never done before. I’m not really one for playing the lottery or “entering to win,” but this one spoke to me. It was a challenge to do 5 livestream videos, each one sharing a different part of my life story in a vulnerable, honest, and “naked” way.

The grand prize was a free ticket to attend a public speaking intensive for women leaders hosted by Alexia Vernon in Las Vegas. And I won!

And thus began my love affair with Alexia (Lex) Vernon, who is a big-hearted, brilliant, ambitious woman on a mission to help women step into their moxie and share their voices powerfully from any stage.

Lex has built a successful speaking and training career, as well as being an author with a new book coming out later this year, by really using courageous storytelling to make a difference in her community and beyond.

I LOVED chatting with her on today’s show and I know you’ll get a ton out of it as well.

We talk about:

  • What is MOXIE and how you can have more of it
  • Moving from total humiliation to powerful public speaking
  • Managing your fear so it doesn’t stop you from speaking effectively
  • Women’s leadership and becoming the breadwinner
  • Postpartum depression and how she moved through it

More about Lex and her work:

Branded a “Moxie Maven” by the White House Office of Public Engagement, Alexia Vernon has dedicated her life to empowering women to speak with moxie on stage, at work and in their personal lives.

As a speaking coach, she leads the Spotlight Speakers Collective, numerous virtual speaking training programs, and she consults with companies looking to develop a strong female leadership pipeline.

Alexia has inspired many audiences: Fortune 500 companies like Zappos and MGM Resorts, associations like INBOUND and the National Association of REALTORS®, and she had the honor of addressing the UN during the Commission on the Status of Women. Her book Step into Your Moxie will be published by New World Library (Fall 2018).

Alexia is facilitating a FREE, LIVE virtual workshop on January 11, 2018 – from 10:00-11:30am PST. You can sign up HERE

Discover Your ‘Secret Sauce’ as a Speaker

So You Can Create the Presentations You Were Born to Give and Get Booked Over and Over Again to Deliver Them!

In this virtual workshop you will:

  • Demystify the 4 ingredients of a transformational speaker’s “secret sauce” and unearth yours

  • Illuminate the idea(s) you want to be known for so you can develop soul-stirring presentations that move audiences to action

  • Slay self-doubt that keeps you playing small as a speaker, coach, entrepreneur and/or agent of change

  • Clarify WHY you are speaking—and, based on your speaking and business goals, illuminate how to find the audiences that need you and your message

  • Learn how to articulate your “secret sauce” so that event organizers, meeting planners and corporate leaders are eager to book you to speak

I wish so much for you in the year ahead. So. Much. And I want to support you in making it happen. Courageously, powerfully, and on your terms.

I believe that the change from one year to the next is an opportunity to reflect and create. To look at how you can build a more intentional, fulfilling, powerful, and self-expressed experience in the new year.

In this episode I go into the 4 ways that I approach the end of a year, and the start of the next one.

You’ll hear about why I don’t care what you call the process of new year “rituals,” but why I care so much that you do something. And, some key questions I use to guide my process.

It’s real, practical, and full of passion and compassion.

We NEED all of your awesomeness in 2018…more women showing up, using their voices, sharing their ideas, creating lives they love in service of the world.

Here’s to a fabulous new beginning. XO

I was so blown away by the courage and wisdom of today’s guest. And just straight up fascinated by her personal story. Joselin Linder is caring an extremely rare gene that has killed several members of her family for generations, and has only recently begun to be understood.

Joselin lives every day with an acute certainty of her own death. She watched her dad’s untimely, and painful, death from this “mystery” illness, before digging into the science of it herself. Through her own investigation, and the writing of her book The Family Gene, she’s helping to bring awareness, research, and insight to the world of genetics in the human experience.

Her story takes us beyond scientific laboratories, and into our own everyday understanding. And, wow, it’s fascinating, important, and hopeful.

Joselin Linder is a regular contributor to the NEW YORK POST, whose work has also been featured on THIS AMERICAN LIFE, MORNING EDITION and LIFE OF THE LAW. She spoke at the TEDX GOWANUS event in Brooklyn in 2014, presenting for the first time on the subject of her family gene and the deadly illness to which it leads. Exclusive to just fourteen people, the story of the gene is told in Linder’s new book, THE FAMILY GENE. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two dogs.

We talk about:

  • Basic genetics and why it’s crucial that we all pay attention
  • What it’s like to live as a “ticking time bomb,” with a deadly gene
  • Death and dying, and how to manage the fear (and beauty)
  • Living your actual “bucket list” starting right now
  • Genetics and ethics for all of us

This time of year can be crazy in the West. There’s tons of pressure to close out the year “strong” in business/work, as well as show up smiling to family functions and holiday events.

There’s a lot that I love about this season, and several things that make me feel a bit nutty.

I know I’m not alone in this December feeling. I’ve been talking to all of my clients and friends about it… the heightened pressure to juggle a million things, cheerfully and gracefully. Of course, we all want to be present and happy in this season.

I met Tanya at an incredible public speaking conference for women. When I heard her story I was deeply moved and inspired, and knew that I wanted to amplify her voice, her mission, and her wisdom.

Tanya is a mom of three children. Her oldest child was born with Cerebral Palsy. Like many parents who have children with challenges, she experienced anger, denial, frustration, and much joy in raising their daughter.

When her daughter started school, she realized how limited the options were to support her child’s full potential. She was eager to find another way, and began to research and build a new school (and really a new paradigm) for education.

But when her daughter died unexpectedly, their world came crashing down. Plans to create this new school were put on hold while Tanya struggled to manage her grief and her other two kids.

However, in time Tanya got back into action, and is now the founder of UP Academy, an elementary school that is focused on children with physical disabilities and creating a new approach to how we include and interact with all abilities, and for all kids everywhere.

Her story is badass… full of courage, compassion, resilience, and hope.

We talk about: * Creating an inclusive educational model that serves all kids * Raising a child with cerebral palsy and special needs * From denial to advocacy: a mom’s journey to start a movement * The “handicapped parking” moment that changed it all * Dealing with death and grief

More information about Tanya and UP Academy: Tanya Sheckley, MBA, is a Social Entrepreneur, Speaker, and the Founder of UP Academy.

“I believe that all children deserve access to an education that pushes them to live up to their potential. UP Academy was born of my quest to find the best education for my three children. My oldest, intuitive, curious and differently-abled with cerebral palsy, my middle, ambitious, fearless and creative and my youngest, observant, sweet, and athletic and all three of them brilliant (but every parent says that right?)

UP Academy is an inclusive elementary school that is the first in the world to offer a fully integrated neuro-development program for differently-abled students. This provides consistency and relevance to learning, as all students participate fully in our individualized and project based learning curriculum within our modern, one-room schoolhouse.

My mission is to spread awareness and joy for all people and change our societal reality around perceptions of people who are different from ourselves. My message is one of rising out of grief to make the world a kinder, more accepting place that sees the value all people can contribute when they participate fully in the world.

My experience has taught me that kids just see kids, our fears and judgement around differences is something that is learned. My goal is a world where even as adults, people just see people.”

I’m still on the hunt for the elusive answer to the challenges of “work-life-balance” and “having it all,” as a driven, passionate, successful, mom in the 21st century.

I don’t have the million dollar solution, but I’ve given it a lot of thought, and I do have some suggestions for how we can do both motherhood and career simultaneously. Because what I know for sure, is that we desperately need women’s voices and influence in all sectors of leadership as well as within our families.

In today’s show I share my own stories of trying to balance work and family (sometimes well and sometimes… not so much).

I also give several ways that I believe we can support ourselves, and each other, in balancing our professional desires with being a mom.

It’s hard as hell sometimes. And, we need to keep going for it... And we can’t do it alone. And the world needs women’s voices. And children need their moms. And we need our sanity :)

I’ve worked with many women who struggle to really appreciate their daily lives, even though they know they “should.” I’ve felt that way at times myself.

It’s frustrating and exhausting to feel like you’re not actually enjoying your life as it’s happening, or to feel like you’re stuck in your head about what isn’t working or isn’t where you want it to be.

On today’s show I’m talking about how I do gratitude in my life, and how it makes a huge difference in my happiness.

I give my 5 do/don’ts of gratitude… The ways that I use a gratitude practice (and it really does take practice) to make me a happier, more grounded, more self-aware person (even when things are shitty or hard).

I answer some questions from women in our community about how to give thanks without it feeling forced or contrived, or how to possibly feel grateful when life feels hard.

As Thanksgiving approaches here in the US, let’s explore real gratitude and how it can make serve you better.

(and P.S. I’m grateful for YOU. Thank you for listening to Naked Conversations. For finding your voice. For loving your people better. For being in this conversation. Thank you.)

The Naked Conversations podcast would likely not exist without today’s guest, Elizabeth DiAlto. She’s been a mentor of mine for over a year and I’ve learned so much about who I am and how I want to lead through her example. She’s taught me (and reminded me again and again) the power of listening to my intuition, trusting myself, and being more gentle myself (while staying true to my goals and drive).

Elizabeth is hilarious, bold, and unapologetically herself. She manages to weave spiritual conversations about masculine and feminine energy, inner wisdom, and faith into practical and grounded ways to approach life.

As the creator and founder of Wild Soul Movement, she leads an international community of women in reconnecting with their bodies, tapping into their intuition, and reclaiming their feminine power. Hope you love this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it!

We talk about: * The 4 key parts of Wild Soul Movement * The power of trust, intuition, and connecting with the divine * Narcissism, violent communication, compassion, and family patterns * What is spiritual bypassing? * Masculine and feminine energy vs. gender stereotypes * Books, books, books and being an autodidact

More about Elizabeth: Known for her raw, honest, and grounded approach to self help and spirituality, Elizabeth DiAlto is a practical mystic, an author, CEO, and host of the popular Untame The Wild Soul podcast. She’s been a teacher, leader, speaker, coach and trainer to groups and individuals for 15+ years in three different industries.

Elizabeth works with women internationally through her digital programs and speaking engagements and more intimately through in-person intensives, retreats, workshops, Wild Soul Movement™ teacher training, and her annual mentorship program, EMERGE. Her greatest mission in this life is to help those who identify as women worldwide to reclaim and redefine their own womanhood, and contribute to a new paradigm of culture where it is both safe and natural for women to love, trust, and accept themselves fully.

In 2013, Shape Magazine listed her alongside Dr Oz, Ellen, Jillian Michaels, Tim Ferriss and more as a Top 30 Motivator. She has written for and been featured in Marie Claire, New York Magazine, SELF, Shape, The Huffington Post, US News and Health Report, Yahoo! News and many more. Before developing the current work she does with women, Elizabeth was a nationally-ranked Sales Rep and District Manager for Vector Marketing (with over $1 million in sales to her credit), a certified personal trainer, group exercise instructor and nutrition coach. She’s a Reiki Master, has completed Energy Mastery trainings with Energetic Solutions, and is an avid student of many sacred traditions and lineages.

Aside from being a prolific creator and community builder, she’s an insatiable learner and a sensualist who loves spas, bathtubs, dancing (especially salsa!), reading, traveling, spending time in nature, and she has a laugh that has been described as, “a sound bath of sunshine and JOY.”

First off, I’m going to use the word marriage for the sake of ease, but it’s not limited it to hetero couples. I believe these ideas can support any romantic partnership, regardless of gender.

Also, I know marriages can be complicated, messy, and unique (I’ve been in one for over a decade myself!). I know there are no easy fixes and in the lifetime of a marriage there are different challenges that present themselves.

In this show I offer you 6 key ways I’ve found to bolster marriages. When used, they can make for better communication, deeper intimacy, less conflict, and a generally happier marriage.

Again, no quick fixes or easy answers, but some clear, actionable ways to breath fresh air into your marriage, see your partner from a different perspective, and take back some agency in one of the most important relationships in your life.

And definitely grab the FREE worksheet to help you actually implement the things I share on the show.

Like always, inspiration without action won’t get you really the results you want. And I want you to have awesome relationships and a fulfilling life 🙂

This show stems from many conversations with bright, passionate, and accomplished women who feel a bit lost or disconnected. Whether they’re moms, wives/partners, executives, teachers, entrepreneurs, or some combination of many roles… I keep hearing from women who want to feel more connected with themselves, more lit up, and more grounded in who they are.

While it’s impossible to re-find your identity in this quick conversation, it will certainly help get you started. And sometimes that’s all it takes, getting started. Once the ball is rolling, you might be amazed by what’s possible

If you used to love to dance, run, paint, read. If you wanted to change the world, run a business, travel. If you used to have opinions and ideas to share. It’s not too late. You’re still in there, and it will feel so damn good to draw it out.

What I cover in this show:

  • Exploring your loss of identity
  • 3 ways to start reconnecting with who you are
  • What are you making time for? (And what always gets left behind?)
  • The excitement of doing things you love again

Yet again, I’m so amazed by the women I get to talk to on this show. It gives me hope for the world every, single time… Rachel is a teacher, an activist, a leader, and a hugely kind hearted person.

She tackles big, challenging topics of racial equity, school inclusion, new models for leadership, and more. From being a school teacher to a principal to an educational leadership coach, she really approaches these topics with heart and courage.

Rachel tells stories about how she was a bit of an unlikely leader in this work, given her background from a small town in Texas, but was pushed by her students and life experiences to go deeper into her values and speak out.

We talk about courageous conversations, deeper listening, and how we can all do better. She also breaks down the work of her company, SPARK for Humanity, and how it came to be born (even when she didn’t expect it). And the “naked” moment she cried her eyes out while running a training in front of 250 school leaders… a moment that changed everything, and catalyzed her work.

Rachel is incredibly bright and passionate, and another amazing example of how we can play bigger and make new choices.

About Our Guest:

Rachel is a seasoned facilitator, leadership coach, inclusion strategist, and speaker, and the Founder of SPARK For Humanity, the interactive, community-building card game where everyone belongs. As a Coach and Strategist, Rachel partners with influencers and helps them ensure that their communication and community-building approach is inclusive and intentional.

Rachel helps her clients design and facilitate experiences for their diverse teams that allow them to unleash their potential to work together, build trust, and connect in meaningful ways. With a Masters from Stanford, a background in education, leadership development, and racial justice, Rachel is passionate about empowering influencers to lead with their S.P.A.R.K. and ignite positive shifts in the world.

What we cover in this conversation:

  • What inclusion really means for her and all of us
  • Changing leadership to create a culture of belonging (and change the world)
  • Geeking out on words and the power that they carry
  • All the messages we get as women and how they box us in
  • Taking intentional action, and what that’s all about
  • How YOU can speak up and lead in “little” and big ways throughout your life

I recorded this show for you right after I returned from a conference, Emerging Women Live, that blew my mind (and burst my heart.) I was deeply inspired, stretched to my edges, and motivated to action. Sounds pretty awesome, right? It sooooo was.

(Not as awesome was returning to a the first snowstorm of the season, on a Monday morning, and having my husband accidentally take my keys to work with him when I needed to get the kids to school. Life and leadership = not mutually exclusive)

From stories of unexpected human connection, to deeply inspiring visionaries, recording this show made me so happy. I wanted to bring you along on this amazing experience with me, hopefully move you a step closer into your own courageous, connected, and “naked” life.

On this episode I share:

  • Amazing stories from women I met (from Esther Perel to Dr. Tererai Trent)
  • One beautiful, and powerful, way that women lead (you included)
  • How each of us can lead in our own way (and why we must)
  • The leadership continuum (and where you fall on it)

Resources mentioned (check these out!):

  • Emerging Women and their Power Circles work
  • Dr. Tererai Trent’s work www.tereraitrent.org and her book The Awakened Women
  • Lynne Twist’s work at Pachamama and The Hunger Project and The Soul of Money

I recorded this episode after a ridiculously fun and soul-filling weekend with my friends.

I was reminded of the unbelievable beauty and power of women who fully see you, get you (all of you), support you (no matter what), love you (even when you F up), champion you (always), laugh with you (til you pee, literally), and cry with you (big snotty sobs).

And I just knew I had to share these thoughts with you while it was fresh and big and super present for me.

I’m always talking about relationships, building community, and being real in all of my coaching, talks, and in the book.

But today’s show is specifically about how to make amazing friends, and get more real and connected with the ones you already have.

If you love it, please share it with your friends and family. And then come tell me what you think over in our Facebook community.

Here are the talking points:

  • The power of female friendships
  • Debunking old BS stereotypes about women
  • Aging and the importance of relationships
  • How your tribe are your cheerleaders and support crew
  • Can’t have these girlfriends if you’re hiding
  • The pressure to have it “all together” — Screw that
  • 5 key ways to support having better, deeper, more intimate friendships with women

  • Email me at sage@sagebhobbs.com if you want to learn more about joining the next round of the Naked Communication Experience group program starting soon. It’ll be an incredible group of women, all on the path to speaking up, being more real, and having kickass relationships throughout their lives. *

I believe Grace’s name was foreshadowing the woman she would become, the woman she now is. Grace is such a light, and has incredible, hard earned wisdom that brought her into teaching all things meditation, calm, and peace. Our conversation was super fun, and very real, which is exactly how she approaches mediation. I laughed out loud, as we somehow made an analogy between mediation and chocolate milk (listen in- I swear it makes sense in context!) If you’ve ever been curious about how you can bring more ease and peace into your life, even when it feels crazy and impossible, tune in to this episode. As Grace says, if she (a self-proclaimed, loud, Latina with a ton of natural drive and ambition) can do it, then so can you.

About Our Guest:

Grace Estripeaut is a mental detox expert.

She lives to help you grab your overwhelm, your rushing and exhaustion and throw them in the trash! Her life is dedicated to help you live ‘in the sweet spot’ so you can thrive without loosing your mind or your heart.

Her 15 years of experience in meditation carried into her workplace when her CEO asked her to lead a mindfulness session for a group of executives and investors. The experience was so well received, that it sparked a career change and fueled her passion to help driven go-getter women ditch mental exhaustion and burn out, and instead, find a sustainable approach to manage your day to day.

She teaches meditation, stress management and Mindful Leadership to corporate employees in Colorado as well as online Zen Breaks.

Get Grace’s 2 Step Guide on How to Switch OFF Your Busy Mind, Wind Down & Sleep Like a Baby by clicking this link.

What we cover in this conversation:

  • How she cultivated courage, “an intense devotion to what you want”
  • The importance of reclaiming your energy and attention in a distracted world
  • How fleeing her home country at age 12 and other trials led to her seeking what she was missing in childhood… internal stability

I recorded this episode at what we affectionately call “The Lab” in my house.

Which really means, on the messy bar top, overlooking the kitchen, that is usually coated in paint, beads, crayons, and other “tools of creativity.” (That’s what I like to call mess when I’m in a good mood.)

Because that’s real life in my world these days. I’m a mom of two kids who hates housework, and really wants to spend my time doing things that matter to me. #laundrycanwait

This is Naked Conversations. It’s about being more YOU, feeling more confident, alive, powerful, and really connected to the people in your life. Even when it’s scary or uncomfortable.

In future episodes I interview amazing women (and the occasional awesome man) who share their real and inspiring stories with you… Naked style. Like uncovering the backstories of the “hero next door.” AKA seemingly ordinary women who are living big, courageous lives.

Meaning: all the struggles, fears, and doubts aren’t edited out.

In this episode, I start with my own story. Well, at least a few big parts of it that led me here to you and this work.

Honestly, it felt kind of weird to talk to myself, about myself, in a microphone.

But, I decided to listen to some wise friends who reminded me that a story is much more interesting when the storyteller is interesting.

How they really said it? “Sage, you gotta tell them who you are.”

So here we go. It’s Naked Conversations story hour.

In this episode I talk about:

  • My unwavering curiosity about people, cultures, and making a difference
  • Our conditioning as girls/women to suppress our voice and self-expression
  • My big, hard lessons on the value of relationships, choices, and living life
  • Lessons as a teenager of divorce
  • Battling cancer as a young idealist
  • Death of a parent, while becoming a parent myself
  • Scary choice to leave my career after my second kid
  • My dream and vision for Naked Conversations
  • How you can participate and learn more about your own Naked path
