Clouded by the weak global demand, slower-than-expected recovery in cross-border land transport capacity, downcycle in the electronics sector, and heightened trade friction, Hong Kong’s total exports fell in the first 4 months of 2023. Trade recovery set to accelerate in the 2H of 2023. Therefore, HKTDC Research has revised its forecast for Hong Kong’s 2023 export growth, to 0-2%.
The seventh Belt and Road Summit, jointly organised by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), drew to a successful close on the 1st of September 2022. The summit saw more than 80 senior government officials and business leaders from the Belt and Road region gathered to share their insights under the theme “Heralding a New Chapter: Collaborate and Innovate”. For the first time, the summit was held in a hybrid format, overcoming geographical boundaries by allowing those who were unable to attend in person to participate virtually. In addition to the rate at which cross-boundary land cargo flows between Hong Kong and mainland China normalise, the ongoing China-US trade issue and the geopolitical tension between Russia and Ukraine are also seen as possible impediments to improved local export prospects. This business support event aims to engage members of the international business community in Hong Kong that are currently underserved in terms of up-to-date business information on the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The physical part of the hybrid on-site/online event was held at the HKTDC SME Centre at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The half-day event featured a series of seminars offering practical business tips and updates on the latest developments in the GBA to prepare international enterprises to "go GBA" via Hong Kong. The event received an overwhelming response with more than 160 participants attending the seminars at the venue while 260 participants joined the online webinar. At the same time, 65 business advisory sessions and one-on-one consultation meetings were arranged for 47 companies at the venue to facilitate business partnerships and opportunities.
The joint seminars welcomed officials from various authorities in the GBA, along with industry leaders and market experts from banking and other sectors, to share their insights and business know-how with international medium-sized enterprises and start-ups, helping them get equipped to set up business and succeed in the GBA via the Hong Kong platform. HKTDC Research, in collaboration with United Overseas Bank Hong Kong, conducted a survey and in‑depth interviews with GBA companies in mid‑2021. Hong Kong’s exports showed a sharp rebound of 30.8% year-on-year in the first four months of 2021. With a reading of 48.7 points, the latest HKTDC Export Index has, however, indicated that exporter sentiment has continued to improve across major sectors and markets. Good News! The Hong Kong SAR Government’s Convention and Exhibition Industry Subsidy Scheme and SME Export Marketing Fund have been enhanced! Companies will be subsidised 50 per cent of its participation fee per participation in TDC's exhibitions during the period, subject to a cap of HK10,000 for each booth and HK$100,000 for each fair. In addition, the subsidy amount of SME Export Marketing Fund (EMF) will be based on the original participation fee.
