She also talks about her experience during UAB Medicine's COVID-19 surge staffing plan, which enabled UAB School of Nursing students to work as Patient Care Technicians and gain valuable clinical experience.

On the fifth episode of Legacy of Leadership, we talk with UAB School of Nursing alumna and former faculty member Marguerite Kinney Handlin, DNSc, RN, FAAN. For more than 30 years, Dr. Kinney has been instrumental in establishing initiatives that showcase better patient outcomes through the demonstration of efficacy of health care when nursing and medicine work as colleagues. Her awards and honors are numerous and include the UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and induction into the Alabama Nursing Hall of Fame.

On Episode 4 of Legacy of Leadership, we talk with Dr. James Harris, Professor of Community/Mental Health Nursing at the University of South Alabama (USA) College of Nursing and former Deputy Chief Nursing Officer of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Nursing Services. He is a member of countless national task forces and work groups for advancing nursing. A Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, Dr. Harris has been recognized for his leadership by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Sigma Theta Tau International Epsilon Nu Chapter, the Alabama State Nurses Association and Who’s Who in American Nursing.

On Episode 3 of Legacy of Leadership, we talk to D’Ann Somerall, DNP, CRNP, FNP-BC, a five-time UAB graduate with three degrees from the UAB School of Nursing. Somerall spent her nursing career as a women’s health nurse practitioner and caring for underserved populations. From 2010-2017, Somerall worked at The UAB School of Nursing’s nurse-managed clinic at The Foundry, where she provided care to under- or uninsured residents of the Birmingham community.
Somerall currently serves as the President of the Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama and Region 8 Coordinator for Sigma, an international nursing organization.

On the second episode of Legacy of Leadership, we sit down with Constance Smith Hendricks, RN, FAAN, dean of Tuskegee University’s School of Nursing and Allied Health. Dr. Hendricks is a two-time graduate of the UAB School of Nursing, where she earned her BSN and MSN. She holds a PhD in clinical nursing research from Boston College, where she was the first African-American to complete its nursing program.
