Filled with stories from fans, music, culture and geo politics as we stop to consider the world as it was in 1990 be it from the upheaval in eastern Europe, the
It's fourth edition in the El Diego franchise, as Maradona enters the fray. Nigeria and Greece add real quality to Group D and there's a European derby as World Champions Germany take on Spain.
Ciaran, Scottish Kev and Mick are in the chairs as Brazil get going in the Bay Area, and the Dutch take DC. There's defections, a kidnapping, a philosophers brother, wrong handed saves and sour grapes. It's all in a day at USA 94.
The temperatures are rising as six new teams enter the fray. Rob, Billy Joe and Colin are on duty as three European teams, two African and Mexico get off the mark.
Possibly the longest episode ever! The guys are out of control. Two shocks and a World Cup on very dry home soil, sure what else would you talk about!
Thirty years on again and our intrepid team take on yet another football tournament. It's USA94, it's Day 1, an opening ceremony never to be forgotten, and a good reason why many in the host nation will never remember. Rob is joined on this one by Michael Foley, Ciaran O'Hara, Billy Joe Padden and Kevin Corcoran.
It's an absolute classic folks, the 1987 FA Cup Final. Ciaran's paying too much attention to kits, Billy's got the mother of all goal descriptions and Rob's faith in the decade is restored.
Join Rob, Mick and Kevin as they re-live the 1985 FA Cup final, with Everton chasing a unique treble and Manchester United aiming for a second Wembley victory in three years.
One of the greatest club teams ever emerged in the late 1980s under Arrigo Sacchi, but it would take a European Cup final to announce their arrival. This one features the Dutch Masters, an imperious back four and the greatest Romanian club team ever.
It's the culture club v the crazy gang at Wembley in the 1988 FA Cup Final. Ciaran, Mick and Billy are in the hot seats for a game that lives longer in the memory for the result than the football.
It's a Celtic battle for a World Cup place in Mexico. A packed Ninian Park in Cardiff, live on tv across the UK, and with a tragic climax. Rob Murphy is joined by Ciaran O'Hara, Kevin Corcoran and Michael Foley for this latest stage of our 80s tour.
Joe Fagan's Liverpool must overcome Roma on their turf to win a fourth European Cup against all odds. It's a final like few since and lifelong Pool fans Billy Joe Padden and Michael Foley join Rob Murphy to relive it.
It's the quality street gang of football podcasting for this one as Ciaran O' Hara, Billy Joe Padden, Colin Sheridan and our resident Scot Kevin Corcoran bring you the story of the thrilling 100th final of the Scottish Cup.
In 1981 Bobby Robson's Ipswich Town came very close to winning the treble, but leading into the Uefa Cup Final of that year, it was the only silverware left that could frank a remarkable year. AZ Alkmaar, the newly crowned Dutch Champions stood in their way.
It was the game that changed football forever, a shootout for the title at Anfield between 1st and 2nd to decide if Liverpool would complete the double or Arsenal win their first title in two decades. Join Rob, Ciaran, Mick and Billy Joe for Episode 1 of this brand new series.
We've reached our summit! The 22nd Day, the 52nd match, the culmination of a million stories. Billy Joe is proud, Colin's quitting, Mick's sparking up, Kevin's refreshed, Rob as always is enthusiastic and Ciaran is begging. It'll all end in tears of joy. Feel free to buy us a coffee at www.buymeacoffee.com/espana82
We've reached the third place play off. It's France v Poland, Billy Joe on accordion music, woke Colin, our World Cup Top 5s and some utterly egregious mispronunciation!
We've reached Semi Final day, and there are two of them. One may just be the next best game game in the world ever! The other might just be the most forgettable. Plus, Colin's handing out dinner invites.
Many games have been touted as the greatest game ever, but surely we've reached the one beyond dispute. Brazil v Italy for a place in the World Cup Semi Finals. Falcao, Zico and Socrates v Conti, Rossi and Scirea, Santana's beautiful game v Bearzot's Total Football. This deserved an episode of its own, so we made one.
We've reached a day we simply couldn't cover with one episode. A classic awaits, but in this episode the team are joined by Paul Hayward, to pick the bones of a World Cup that could've seen England in the Semi Finals, had they just been able to find the net against the hosts.
As Poland and the Soviets face off for a Semi Final berth, we're joined by Ryan Hubbard for a look at the story of a great Polish team. In the days second game, Northern Ireland could make it to the last four, but unfortunately for them, the French are 'incroyable'.
Marcela Mora y Araujo joins the crew for the day to reflect on a World Cup Superclásico, Argentina's exit and the legacy of Espana 82 for the national team. In the days other game, West Germany put an end to Spanish hopes of a first World Cup title.
Patrick Kielty joins the team to discuss Northern Ireland's big opportunity against Austria and Belgium could be homeward bound if they can't get a big result against the Soviets.
We've got two De Facto Quarter finals today as Argentina put their title on the line against Italy, and England aim for four wins in a row against West Germany. Special guest Matt Cooper joins the team to reminisce.
France open the second stage and set it alight, while Poland do the same against Belgium. The gang are joined by Philippe Auclair for one of the days that makes Espana 82 such a special World Cup.
It's the end of the first round group phase - England are looking to go through with a 100% record, there's the disgrace of Gijon, as Austria and West Germany change the World Cup for ever more and Northern Ireland must beat the hosts to keep their dream alive!
Never has an episode been better researched, there are more notes than a post it factory. France and Czechoslovakia are fighting for survival, Algeria could make it out of the group in their first World Cup and Honduras prove to be the hero underdogs we'd been looking for.
Diego meets Magico, Zico is magnifico and Italy invoke omerta. It's all going off as three more groups reach conclusion and Colin and Billy channel De Niro and Pacino.
The first day of what might have been. Poland might have been out, Hungary might have been through and Scotland could have won the World Cup, surely......
Algeria and Austria compete for progress to Round 2, France have to beat Kuwait and we're joined by Northern Ireland's Felix Healy to look back at the crucial game with Honduras.
England are into Round 2, Spain have home advantage and West Germany are back on the wagon after time in the Liquor Lake. Rob, Mick and Ciaran have their hands full with this one.
Having gorged on all the sugary goodness of Brazil and Argentina on Day 6. Day 7 finds Rob, Mick and Ciaran seeking a cure in Poland v Cameroon, Belgium v El Salvador and USSR v New Zealand.
Italy are still stumbling as they take on Peru, Scotland play their best half of football ever at a World Cup, only for Brazil to play a better second half and Diego Armando Maradona arrives on the World stage.
It's Day 5 and debutants Kuwait reveal their Zico to the world, Panenka has a penalty, Chile and Austria both have big ambitions and Northern Ireland bridge a 24 year World Cup gap.
Day 4 and it's a marathon not a sprint! England get off to a quick start against France, Jupp Derwal needs a ticket to Munich and the hosts get a shock in Valencia.
The crew are joined by our Scottish correspondent Kevin Corcoran, as Colin finally sees some goals and Cameroon make their World Cup debut.
Whooooooaaaaa! Brazil are here! This is What the 1982 World Cup is all about! And the Soviets, Poles and Italians aren't too shabby either.
The crew are back and this time we're sinking our teeth into Espana 82. If you enjoy this special preview of episode 1, subscribe today wherever you get your podcasts, just look for Espana 82 - One Day At A Time.

The quarter finals conclude with two dramatic games for different reasons. West Germany march on and put an end to Czechoslovakia's fairytale run while Cameroon and England play out the highest scoring game of the knockout stages with Bobby Robson's side edging a 3-2 thriller.
Our guests on today's show were both in Italy in 1990, Lubo Moravcik was on the field playing a key role in that Czechoslovakian side that left the tournament with their heads held high. Athletic UK writer Amy Lawrence went there as a football fan looking for an adventure and found it in the cities of Turin and Genoa.

Ireland take on Italy in the World Cup Quarter Final in Rome and we mark the day with a busy show. A stunning day at the World Cup. Two fierce derbies that promised fireworks on paper and delivered them to such a degree that 30 years later, we’re still learning new bits about each of the games.
Brazil’s World Cup came to a shuddering halt after just four games, they haven't missed a quarter final since and it was the first World Cup where they lost to Argentina after three previous World Cup encounters. How it happened and the accusations that followed dominate our chat.
And that’s not even the main game of the day, no, it’s the latest instalment of the Netherlands West Germany rivalry that might well have been at it’s most volatile during the two year period between 1988 semi final and this last 16 meeting won by the Germans. Their two great goals overshadowed by a double sending off of Frank Rijkaard and Rudy Voller that lives in Infamy to this day.
On the mic today, Rob Murphy, Billy Joe Padden, Mick Foley and Ciaran O’Hara with our special guest Gavin Cooney from the 42.ie who came on to balance our rose tinted glasses view of the proceedings.

That sets the tone for our crew’s discussion on the game where Costa Rica’s brave journey came to an end in a 4-1 defeat to Czechoslovakia.
Host Rob Murphy, Ciaran O’Hara and Colin Sheridan look back at that game and before all of that, discuss the big game in Naples where extra time was required to separate the side’s and Roger Milla cemented his legacy as a superstar of the tournament with two great goals. The second will live long in the memory as it involved him robbing Rene Higueta of possession and scoring into an empty net.

Rob Murphy, Ciaran O'Hara and Michael Foley are on today's show to look back on the 1-1 tie with the Dutch and all the drama that surrounded it. Scotland's journey had high points and low points but their performance against Brazil was full of courage and bad luck. Costa Rica were not short of courage either and had their luck too but above all else they had the fire power up front when it mattered.
On today's show our special guest is tv producer Kevin Corcoran, a Scottish fan who travelled to Italy to follow the Tartan Army and has plenty fo stories from the adventure. He joins Rob, Ciaran, Billy Joe Padden and Colin Sheridan to look back at Brazil's 1-0 win over Scotland and Costa Rica's barnstorming 2-1 victory over Sweden.

The podcast builds towards the perfect finale where the crew discuss arguably the finest goal of this or almost any world cup as Roberto Baggio slaloms through the Czechoslovak defence to score a goal for the ages.
We say goodbye to UAE, USA and Austria even if they technically still had a mathematical chance of being among the third place qualifiers, the exit seemed inevitable and the performances meant they wouldn’t be missed.

The first big hurdle in our project has arrived, the dubious honour of having to sit through what might well be the worst football game of the 1990 World Cup all over again fell to the feet of Rob Murphy, Ciaran O’Hara, Billy Joe Padden and Colin Sheridan.
Despite the unenviable challenge of re-watching Ireland’s 0-0 draw with Egypt, the quartet completed their mission successfully and can now say with almost cast iron certainty that they have boldly gone where no self respecting Irish person will ever go again by taking one last glance at that infamous encounter which may go down as the worst game of the Jack Charlton era.
In happier news, the crew also look back at two much more entertaining encounters as Belgium once again lit up the competition with their brilliance and Spain found their feet.

There are three games to look back at on Day 9 but there's one story that seems to stand out, England's moment of reckoning with the media on their backs and form seemingly on a downward trajectory, the fear was a repeat of Euro '88 and yet, just when all seemed to be going array, the tide started to turn.
Join Rob Murphy, Ciaran O'Hara and Michael Foley as they look back at a day where Brazil beat Juventus, sorry Costa Rica, Scotland roared back into the tournament with a win over Sweden and England found their tune even if they couldn't find the goal to crown a fine display.
Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/italia90onedayatatime/message
Czechoslovakia continue their momentum and book a place in the next round with a win over their central European rivals Austria while in the second game of the day, West Germany overwhelm the UAE. 30 years later, we find out that the consolation goal wasn’t as much of a consolation as we thought at the time.
Join Rob and Ciaran as they continue the journey, and considering it was a quiet day they even have time to speculate on what films they would have gone to in the cinema had they taken a one day only break from the action.

Two games today and two hand ball incidents with very different outcomes.
In Udine, Spain and Uruguay became the last two teams to begin their campaign and ended up deadlocked at 0-0 although Uruguay had a golden chance to win the game after Francisco Villarroya handled the ball on the goal line to prevent a certain goal. Rubén Sosa blew the chance to win it as he blazed the penalty.
The second hand ball came from the hand of Maradona early in his side's crucial clash with the Soviet Union in Naples. The Argentina number ten stopped a goal with his hand but the transgression went unpunished and the reigning champions went on to win a tight tussle 2-0.
On the show today Rob and Ciaran look back at both games and journalist Danny Carey joins the show to look back at one of the football tunes that was all across the Irish airwaves during the tournament.
Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/italia90onedayatatime/message
Join Rob, Ciaran and regular guests Colin Sheridan and Billy Joe Padden as they look back at an unexpectedly exciting day 5 with Belgium impressing in their 2-0 victory over a luckless South Korea and Egypt causing a sensation in Group F thanks to a late equaliser that earned them a draw with Euro '88 champions the Netherlands.
