"On the outside, everything looked great, job, car, relationship, pets, lots of friends, a business. Alcoholism was a subtle foe in my life that ate at me in snack-size bites. My life didn't go up in flames by any means but one day I woke up and realized there was nothing left for my alcoholism to eat- I was spiritually and emotionally bankrupt, and in some ways, that was worse than losing all the things I had on the outside. I was depleted and completely disconnected from the source. The relationships I had were many but most of them had no substance. I was deeply self-absorbed and so good at convincing myself I was okay that I no longer trusted the eyes looking at me in the mirror. I found my home group (Harmony Group in Ocean Beach) soon after June 13, 2021, when I hit my bottom, and I've been a regular attendee ever since. I have service commitments and meet with a sponsor weekly to work the steps. I'm still new on this journey but the change in me is evident. Before I got sober my business was struggling, I was in a job I hated, and my relationship was hanging by a thread. In a few days, I will celebrate 10 months of sobriety and I owe everything I am becoming to Alcoholics Anonymous."

Jay Wylie, Veteran Coordinator/Operations Manager at Confidential Recovery, San Diego, is a Southern California native who served as a Naval Officer for 22 years. However, a serious drinking problem derailed that career and returned him to civilian life. From his Bio--Brock Bevell is a well-regarded family man with 7 children, six daughters, and one son. He is a retired Police Officer who was run over on duty and ultimately retired from the injuries. For the next few years, Brock struggled with being retired. The day after turning in his equipment, he felt ostracized and not a part of the brotherhood. This was a huge blow to his ego, one day your chasing bad guys, and the next your picking up your kid’s toys. It was a difficult transition. It was at this time that Brock’s addiction took control of his emotions. He began to spin out of control, and he proceeded to self-medicate himself.

Terri has been a Deputy District Attorney for 27 years. As a prosecutor, she has handled a variety of cases including murders, assaults, robberies, and drug crimes, among others. She currently serves as the Chief of the South Bay branch. Prior to this assignment, she was the Chief of Narcotics for 3 years, where she saw the number of fentanyl deaths skyrocket. As a mother of three grown children, and as a prosecutor, she felt compelled to take action in an attempt to save lives. Carly founded Drop Top Company following the opioid-related passing of her friend, in attempts to do that which he could not: share his fashion innovation with the world. Initially, they donated 20% of all proceeds toward foundations battling the epidemic, then, with COVID, they reduced it to 10%, nevertheless, they have raised over $3,000 in less than two years to donate toward their foundations.

The Jamie Daniels Foundation, a Children's Foundation initiative, provides education, resources, guidance, and support to people battling Substance Use Disorder so that lives can be saved and healing can be created within families.
Ken's son Jamie had often joked that dad needed a "summer job." Unfortunately, he gave him one. Ken is co-founder of the Jamie Daniels Foundation dedicated to ending the shame and stigma that surrounds drug addiction and building a long-term safe, sober living home in Oakland County, Michigan.
After her son Jamie's death in 2016, Lisa shut down her business and focused her time solely on the opioid crisis. As co-founder of the Jamie Daniels Foundation (www.jamiedanielsfoundation.org), Lisa has spoken in front of numerous audiences, including the United States House of Representatives.

"I have a little "bottom envy" for those who have a much better drunk-a-log than mine. I was pretty much still having fun for the most part – it hadn't gotten horribly dark, and my consequences were still somewhat manageable. But I was on a track that was not going to take me to where I am today. I was heading for disaster. I came to a fork in the road, and I ended up going in a new direction. The elevator was going down – I just got off before hit an extremely low bottom.
I've been sober since October 21, 1989. I have two Home Groups, if that is allowed – Harmony Group in Ocean Beach, where I got sober and spent a good 10-years on a daily basis. I'm back down there – on ZOOM now -- three of four mornings per week. And Rancho Bernardo Early Birds at the Broken Yolk off Carmel Mountain Road – which now also meets on a ZOOM I started called, Just Say No to Corona. And I have a Wed night Men's meeting as well."

Bob was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He joined the Army in October 1967 until ending his service in May 1970, after completing two tours in Vietnam from October 1968 to May 1970. Bob is a graduate of CSUN, June 1971, with a BA in Political Science – Urban Planning. He married Janice in February of 1973 and has 3 Children, 7 Grandchildren. He worked many years at Wholesale Plumbing in Sales and Marketing.
He retired in 2015. He has been active in the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence – San Diego (NCADD-SD). This community-focused resource will fulfill its mission by providing alcohol and drug prevention training in schools, community centers, and hospitals.

Keith brings with him almost ten years of experience between intake and business development in the addiction treatment field. His overall goal is to provide resources to those individuals suffering from substance abuse and mental health issues and help them find freedom from their addiction. In this episode, Scott interviews Sheriff William D. Gore, who, since July 3, 2009, has served as the San Diego County Sheriff, an elected position. He is responsible for over 4300 employees and is in charge of the second-largest jail system in California. William has been in law enforcement for more than four decades, including working with the FBI. He has been proactive in getting NARCAN's use to counteract drug overdoses into his officers' hands, saving hundreds of lives. As Sheriff, he oversees nine incorporated cities in San Diego county, including over one million people.

The purpose of the PDATF is to coordinate and collaborate across the public health and safety sectors to provide information to the community about what is harmful regarding prescribed medications and promote prevention efforts and substance abuse treatments. They also address the safe disposal of unneeded prescription drugs that can be found in most homes.

In this episode, Scott chats with David, who joined the police department back in 1988. For the first 6-7 years, he worked patrol, then moved on to SWAT, Internal Affairs, Gangs, Robbery, and Sex Crimes before getting involved in management, which eventually led to his current position as Chief of Police. He discusses the stresses on his force brought on by the COVID 19 pandemic and drug and alcohol abuse issues. The death of George Floyd in Minneapolis has seen his officers being under extra stress, but at the same time, inrollment in the force has risen. David is on call seven days a week and approaches his duties with a passion.
