The Virginia Supreme Court on Friday blocked a new Democratic-drawn congressional map from taking effect, delivering a major boost for Republicans as they defend their narrow House majority in the midterm elections.Weeks after Virginia narrowly approved the plan in a statewide vote, the court ruled that Democratic lawmakers did not meet the procedural requirements to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot, which was written to pave the way for the redrawn district lines. Democrats were seeking a map designed to give the party up to four new House seats.

On April 15, 2026, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recited a prayer during a Pentagon service that was an adapted version of the fictional "Ezekiel 25:17" monologue from the 1994 film Pulp Fiction. Hegseth, referring to it as the "CSAR 25:17" prayer, used the adapted quote—famously delivered by Samuel L. Jackson—to describe a military rescue mission.

SPOTLIGHT: On April 21, 1937, Illinois congressman Arthur Wergs Mitchell, was told to move to the section of the train designated for African American passengers, in accordance with the Arkansas Separate Coach Law of 1891.Under threat of arrest, Mitchell moved to the designated area and filed a lawsuit once he returned to Illinois.
(GAMBIT) The Louisiana House Judiciary Committee April 16 passed a bill essentially eliminating New Orleans’ clerk of criminal court just weeks before Calvin Duncan, a Black man who was wrongfully imprisoned for decades before being elected to the position last year, is set to take office. The committee quickly passed Senate Bill 256 by Sen. Jay Morris, a Monroe Republican, on an 8-5 vote in a push to get it before Gov. Jeff Landry so that it can take effect before Duncan starts his term as criminal clerk of court on May 4.

Applause erupted in the UN General Assembly Hall on Wednesday as Member States adopted a resolution declaring the transatlantic slave trade the gravest crime against humanity. Metro Atlanta is undergoing a housing crisis, which has been fueled in part by corporate investors and left unchecked by Georgia state lawmakers. Many of these lawmakers are real estate investors themselves, an investigation by Capital B and Type Investigations has found.

Two shutdowns of the U.S. federal government have occurred in 2026, both arising from disputes in Congress about reforms to federal immigration enforcement after the killing of Alex Pretti by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents.The first shutdown lasted four days from January 31 to February 3, affecting about half of the departments of the federal government; it was caused by delays in approving a funding package that would allow time for reform negotiations. The second began on February 14 due to a lack of progress in the reform negotiations and only affects the Department of Homeland Security.

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation reports receiving more than 100 complaints from U.S. service members alleging that some commanders have framed current military operations in Iran in terms of Christian end-times prophecy, namely God’s plan for Armageddon and the imminent return of Jesus.Landon Schnabel, associate professor of sociology at Cornell University who studies religion and social change, says that the use of such apocalyptic language by commanders reflects a climate shaped from the top down.
Gas is up
Gas prices surged across Southern California this week, with the statewide average climbing above $5 per gallon and some drivers encountering prices more than $8 at the pump.The national average has risen nearly 50 cents a gallon in the week since the war in Iran began, according to AAA. The organization said prices were already trending upward with typical seasonal patterns when the joint U.S.-Israel attack on Iran drove oil prices higher.

BREAKING: (FOX) Labor Department deploys ‘strike team’ to California over $21B unemployment debt, fraud concerns: The Labor Department deployed a "strike team" to California to address federal findings of improper payments and alleged fraud within the state’s unemployment insurance (UI) program.
California has been found to have a depleted UI trust fund, along with $21 billion in borrowed federal funds to keep the system running, which federal officials say has led state employers to pay higher UI taxes to repay the debt.

(CBS News.) Longtime incumbent Sen. John Cornyn is facing the fight of his political life, with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Houston Rep. Wesley Hunt, both challenging him for the GOP nomination.
The most recent polling from the University of Houston's Hobby School of Public Affairs showed Paxton with 38% support, Cornyn at 31%, Hunt with 17% and 12% undecided. The Real Clear Politics average of polls between December 1 and February 3 gives Paxton a two-point lead.

To share the impact of the digital documentation fellowship and the way in which it has encouraged and supported the integration of historic preservation at HBCUs, HOPE Crew, in partnership with the Action Fund produced a documentary featuring the five students from the cohort.
Election & Politics: (FOX News) Democratic lawmakers say President Donald Trump’s redistricting gambit is backfiring as Virginia’s Democratic-controlled Senate advanced new congressional maps that could chip away at the House GOP's majority.
(NBC News) While some state lawmakers have been able to redraw congressional maps through legislation, Virginia's constitution mandates that a bipartisan redistricting commission handles the process. After several Republican-controlled states enacted new maps, Virginia Democrats began the complicated effort of amending the constitution to allow them to respond with redrawn district lines.
(SCOTUSblog) California’s path to the enactment of its new map was slightly more complicated than in Texas. The California Legislature adopted the new map in August, but under the state constitution an independent redistricting commission – rather than the Legislature – normally has the power to redistrict. The legislation adopting the new map therefore proposed a ballot initiative, known as Proposition 50, that would amend the constitution to allow the use of the new map from 2026 through 2030. By a roughly two-to-one margin, the state’s voters approved the initiative in a special election on Nov. 4.

Scientists have detected several thousand earthquakes, the vast majority of them with small magnitudes, in just over two weeks near Greece's volcanic island of Santorini, the University of Athens' crisis management committee said Tuesday, adding that a larger quake cannot be ruled out. Alsobrooks, a former county executive and prosecutor who beat out the state’s former Republican governor in a tight race, is the first Black senator from Maryland.Three other Black women have served in the US Senate , including Carol Moseley Braun, Kamala Harris and Laphonza Butler. Cuban authorities say at least six people have been killed after Hurricane Oscar made landfall over the weekend, with the government still working to re-establish power after days of blackouts.

ELECTION NEWS: Voting ballots were set on fire in Oregon , Washington and Arizona.
Law enforcement including the Federal Bureau of Investigation is still investigating in both Washington and Oregon, where election officials are asking voters who dropped their ballots off at these drop boxes over the weekend to get in contact so they can be sure to vote.
In a statement, Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs denounced what he described as "acts of terror" and reminded voters that they could check online to see if their ballot had been marked as returned and would be able to print out replacement ballots or cast one in person.
Oregon and Washington vote exclusively by mail and drop box while in Arizona, almost all voters cast ballots early that are returned the same way. Ballot drop boxes have been a subject of conspiracist narratives and false claims about their security since the 2020 election cycle, according to Max Read, a senior research manager for elections at the nonprofit Institute for Strategic Dialogue, which studies extremism and disinformation.
MORE ELECTION NEWS: A federal judge threw out a challenge on Tuesday brought by GOP lawmakers in Pennsylvania over overseas voters casting ballots in the battleground state, as courts across the country are issuing a flurry of last-minute rulings on ballots and how elections are run as parties seek to expand or limit voter access.
A record 1.4 million ballots have been cast in Georgia since early voting began last Tuesday. That exceeds the early vote totals in the last presidential election year. What that means for which candidates will prevail in November is still an open question, but those numbers do tell us something about the nature of this race and the strategies the presidential campaigns might take to pull off a win. Zachary Peskowitz, an associate professor of political science at Emory University, spoke with GPB’s Peter Biello.
Meanwhile, a Donald Trump rally at Madison Square Garden in News York City featured controversial comedian, Tony Hinchcliffe as one of the speakers over the weekend. His insensitive comments that lacked humor has set fire to the internet, media and ethnic organizations and groups as people are outraged by the barrage of racist comments intertwined as "comedy."
The comments, while reminiscent of many made by Trump in the campaign’s final weeks, were made by a comedian early in the night’s schedule and were supposed to be jokes. Now, they are dominating the news cycle and putting Trump’s campaign on the backfoot with just under a week until the election.
Longtime Trump adviser Peter Navarro is calling the comedian, Tony Hinchcliffe, “the biggest, stupidest asshole that ever came down the comedy pike” after he called Puerto Rico a “floating island of hot garbage” during his often-vulgar opening set.

Next, the five men who make up the Central Park Five and now call themselves the Exonerated Five have filed a defamation lawsuit against Donald Trump over his remarks during the presidential debate last month.
The lawsuit focuses on the Sept. 10 debate in Pennsylvania, where Trump said the five men — Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise — pleaded guilty when they were tried in connection with the assault and rape of a woman who had been running in Central Park on April 19, 1989, and that the victim had died.

The Ethiopian government estimates that number will more than quadruple by 2032. That’s largely because the national government took the extraordinary step earlier this year of banning the import of all gas-powered passenger vehicles — becoming the first nation in the world to do so.
It also effectively slashed the customs tax on imported cars: The tax on gas vehicles was up to 200% before they were banned, while the import tax for fully assembled EVs is just 15%, according to the country’s finance ministry.

Diddy,” a/k/a “PD,” a/k/a “Love,” was arrested last night and charged in a three count Indictment with racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution. The Indictment unsealed today alleges that between 2008 and the present, COMBS abused, threatened, and coerced women and others, and led a racketeering conspiracy that engaged in sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery, and obstruction of justice, among other crimes. COMBS is expected to be presented in Manhattan federal court this afternoon before Magistrate Judge Robyn F. Tarnofsky.

He was an American singer, songwriter, and producer known primarily for his recordings with the soul and funk band Maze. He formed Maze, originally called Raw Soul, in his hometown of Philadelphia in 1970. After moving to San Francisco and an introduction to Marvin Gaye, Maze later released nine Gold albums and created a large and devoted following.
Beverly died on September 10, 2024, at the age of 77.

WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has determined that the upsurge of mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and a growing number of countries in Africa constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) under the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR). Dr Tedros’s declaration came on the advice of an IHR Emergency Committee of independent experts who met earlier in the day to review data presented by experts from WHO and affected countries. The Committee informed the Director-General that it considers the upsurge of mpox to be a PHEIC, with potential to spread further across countries in Africa and possibly outside the continent. The situation has already spread to the United States.

In order to further sustainable building projects in Colombia, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is planning to utilize advanced 3D printing equipment from WASP (World’s Advanced Saving Project). Feature Story: Tampons from several brands that potentially millions of people use each month can contain toxic metals like lead, arsenic, and cadmium, a new study led by a UC Berkeley researcher has found. Tampons are of particular concern as a potential source of exposure to chemicals, including metals, because the skin of the vagina has a higher potential for chemical absorption than skin elsewhere on the body. In addition, the products are used by a large percentage of the population on a monthly basis—50–80% of those who menstruate use tampons—for several hours at a time.

On Monday night, more than 53,000 Black men joined a virtual conference, Win With Black Men, to rally behind the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Kamala Harris. During the four-hour call, organizers said the group raised more than $1.3m for the Harris campaign and grassroots voter organizations focused on Black men.
The success of the call, which was inspired by the Win With Black Women call the night before , runs counter to the narrative shaped by recent election polling indicating that 30% of Black men are planning on voting for Donald Trump. “Don’t let anybody slow us down asking the question: ‘Can a Black woman be elected president of the United States?’” Raphael Warnock, who represents Georgia in the US Senate, said on the call. “Kamala Harris can win. NOAA National Weather Service forecasters at the Climate Prediction Center predict above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin this year. NOAA’s outlook for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which spans from June 1 to November 30, predicts an 85% chance of an above-normal season, a 10% chance of a near-normal season and a 5% chance of a below-normal season.
While many American towns claim to have held the earliest celebrations of the holiday, U.S. officials declared Waterloo, New York the “birthplace” of Memorial Day. Historians say residents closed businesses, flew flags at half-staff, and held a ceremony to remember local Civil War soldiers on May 5, 1866 — three years after the bloody conflict ended.
In Blight’s 2001 book Race and Reunion: The Civil War in American Memory, the event unfolded at a former planter’s racetrack where Confederates held captured Union soldiers during the last year of the war. Over 250 prisoners died, most of them from disease, and were buried in unmarked graves. Black Charlestonians decided to give them a proper burial by reorganizing the graves and erecting a fence around them, TIME cites from the book. They named the burial site “Martyrs of the Race Course.”
Then came May 1, when thousands of Black residents and schoolchildren showed up to sing patriotic songs, listen to religious sermons and speeches, and hold picnics in honor of the fallen Union troops. Black Union regiments concluded the event by marching around the graves. According to Blight, nearly 10,000 people, mostly Black, attended the massive tribute.

Since 1971, marijuana has been in the same category as heroin, methamphetamines and LSD, according to NBC News. Each substance under the Schedule I classification is defined as a drug with no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. Schedule III substances include Tylenol with codeine, steroids and testosterone.
By rescheduling cannabis, the drug would now be studied and researched to identify concrete medical benefits, opening the door for pharmaceutical companies to get involved with the sale and distribution of medical marijuana in states where it is legal.

California's governor, Gavin Newsom, is in a video that has gone viral nationwide due to the nature of an in-store incident with a store clerk.
Democratic Governor Newsom has been coined by some far right politicians and voters as being "too soft on crime." This was a focus for many Republicans in California during a recall effort of Newsom in 2021--they even paid for a commercial during the recall effort purporting this misleading information, according to the Los Angeles Times. The same article explained that compared to other states, a report from the California Policy Lab found that violent crime rates increased slightly and property crime rates decreased substantially in California between 2019 and 2020.
Even if the media corrects such misinformation, some people still will choose to believe what's not true because it is more sensational. Newsom discovered this himself this past December while buying items at a Target store in Sacramento--If one store clerk is misinformed, imagine what others must believe as well ...

The three Black soldiers were identified as Sgt. William Rivers, 46, of Carrollton, Georgia; Specialist Kennedy Sanders, 24, of Waycross, Georgia; and Specialist Breonna Moffett, 23, of Savannah, Georgia, according to the Defense Department. They were all assigned to the 718th Engineer Company, a US Army Reserve unit based out of Fort Moore, Georgia, Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh said at a briefing, according to CNN.
Meanwhile, California has been suffering severe atmospheric rivers for the past several days, with more rain storms to come. An atmospheric river is a narrow corridor or filament of concentrated water vapor transported in the atmosphere. It’s like a river in the sky that can be 1,000 miles long. On average, atmospheric rivers have about twice the regular flow of the Amazon River, according to Qian Cao.
As the second week of Black History Month is under way, BHN Radio news publishers honor Carter G. Woodson for trailblazing the path from Negro History Week which spawned into Black History Month. Born in Virginia, the son of former slaves, Woodson had to put off schooling while he worked in the coal mines of West Virginia. He graduated from Berea College, and became a teacher and school administrator. Earning graduate degrees at the University of Chicago, Woodson then became the second African American, after W. E. B. Du Bois, to obtain a PhD degree from Harvard University. Woodson is the only person whose parents were enslaved in the United States to obtain a PhD in history.[6] Largely excluded from the uniformly-white academic history profession, Woodson realized the need to make the structures which support scholarship in black history, and black historians. He taught at historically black colleges, Howard University and West Virginia State University, but spent most of his career in Washington, D.C., managing the ASALH, public speaking, writing, and publishing.

FRESNO, Calif. — Irma Olguin, Jr. and Jake Soberal, the founders and leaders of the failed Fresno-based technology company Bitwise, self-surrendered today on a federal complaint charging them with conspiring to commit wire fraud and taking more than $100,000,000 from various businesses and individuals, United States Attorney Phillip A.Talbert announced at a press conference.
Olguin, Jr., 42, and Soberal, 37, made their initial appearances at the Robert E. Coyle Federal Courthouse in Fresno today at 2:00 p.m. before United States Magistrate Judge Sheila K. Oberto--they both plead not guilty to all charges. The two Bitwise co-founder-defendants are to return to the courtroom for a preliminary hearing Jan. 25. According to KVPR, they were allowed to walk out of the courtroom; Olguin Jr. made bond using her mother’s home and Soberal’s family residence was also used as his bond.
Governor Andy Beshear, the nation's most popular Democratic governor, has won re-election in Kentucky--a major win for Democrats in a red-leaning state. It was a contentious gubernatorial race with attorney general Daniel Cameron having high hopes to become the state's first Black governor, especially with the backing of both former President Donald Trump and close ties to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. (Trump carried the state by more than 25 points three years ago.)
However, the mishandling of the Breonna Taylor case was inevitably part of the downfall of Cameron's campaign; constituents felt that he did not do enough as the former attorney general to penalize the seven officers who arrived in plain clothing to Taylor's Louisville, Kentucky apartment on March 13, 2020, via a no-knock warrant in the middle of the night. The officers did not announce themselves, the boyfriend fired a warning shot, to scare away what he thought were intruders. As the officers randomly fired 32 shots into the home of 26-year old trained medic, Taylor, died instantly on location after six of those shots fatally wounded her.

For decades, Black women have been using hair relaxers to help them “fit into” global mainstream workplaces and the European standards of beauty that continue to dominate them. More recently, research has linked these relaxers to cancer and reproductive health issues — and a spate of lawsuits across the United States, and at least one in Canada, have been brought by Black women against the makers of these relaxants.
The Republican Party in the United States has moved farther right in recent years. And as it’s done so, you would think racialized Americans might be distancing themselves from it and its policies.
But at last week’s GOP primary presidential debates, three of the seven people on stage were candidates of colour. Racialized citizens also have been drawn to far-right politics, including key players in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the United States Capitol and recent racist attacks.
Which begs the question: Why are racialized people upholding white supremacist ideologies that work against them?
Daniel Martinez HoSang, a professor of Ethnicity, Race and Migration and American Studies at Yale University, has been exploring this question for a long time. He is the author with Joseph Lowndes of Producers, Parasites, Patriots, Race, and the New Right Wing Politics of Precarity. HoSang sat down with us to discuss what they call the politics of multicultural white supremacy.

(Stellantis N.V. is a multinational automotive manufacturing corporation formed from the merger of the Italian–American conglomerate Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and the French PSA Group. They carry the Jeep, Ram, Chrysler, Dodge and Fiat brands.)
UAW President Shawn Fain remained adamant about the Sept. 14, 11:59 p.m. deadline for the nearly 150,000 members to have a deal in place with the Big Three; a few hours before the strike, he made a statement on Facebook live to the public about the absolute deadline if the demands were not met.
Meanwhile, General Motors CEO Mary Barra told CBS Mornings they have presented four different offers to the UAW since they have been at the table with them since July 18, receiving 1,000 demands; Barra said GM couldn't be successful if the company met all of UAW's demands. The initial demands, she said, were over $100 billion.

CDC is tracking a new SARS-CoV-2 variant called BA.2.86 and working to better understand its potential impact on public health. This update follows CDC’s initial risk assessment summary on August 23, 2023. A variant is an alternate version of a virus – in this case, the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 – that has some mutations or changes in its genetic code, compared with the original. Mutations can alter the behavior of the viruses in various ways, such as how effectively they break into cells and how rapidly they can replicate, according to virologist and infectious disease expert, Dr. Suresh V. Kuchipudi.
BA.2.86, nicknamed Pirola, is a highly mutated new omicron sublineage of SARS-CoV-2 that was first detected in Denmark in July 2023. The World Health Organization announced that, as of Sept. 6, 2023, BA.2.86 has been detected in 11 countries. What’s interesting is that BA.2.86, the newest sublineage on the scene, seems to have come from the older BA.2 omicron lineage that was dominant in early 2022 and not from the newer omicron offshoots, according to virologist, Dr. Kuchipudi. A preliminary study reported that BA.2.86 features 33 distinct spike mutations when compared to its precursor, BA.2.
September 11, 2023, marks the 22nd anniversary of the September 11 attacks, commonly known as 9/11, which were four coordinated suicide terrorist attacks carried out by al-Qaeda against the United States on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, according to the encyclopedia Britannica.
Nearly 3,000 people had perished: some 2,750 people in New York, 184 at the Pentagon, and 40 in Pennsylvania; all 19 terrorists also died. Included in the total in New York City were more than 400 police officers and firefighters, who lost their lives after rushing to the scene and into the towers.

On the night of September 8, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Moroccan city, Marrakech.
At least 2,862 people died from the earthquake, Morocco's Interior Ministry said Monday, September 11. Over 2,500 were injured, according to CBS News.
Marrakech was founded in 1070 by the Almoravid dynasty, which derived from a tribe that was part of a larger non-Arab confederation of peoples now referred to as Berbers.

Secondhand smoke may be an important but overlooked source of chronic lead exposure in children and adolescents. That is the key finding of a recent study, published in the journal BMC Public Health by Associate Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health at Texas A&M University, Genny Carrillo and Assistant Professor of Epidemiology, Texas A&M University, Taehyun Roh.
Elevated blood levels were more common in children ages 6 to 10 than in older participants. Notably, children from low-income households showed 27% higher blood lead levels compared with those from high-income households.
Lead, unlike many other toxins, does not get diluted when exposure decreases. Nor does the body excrete it naturally. Instead, it accumulates in the bones and leaches into blood. The only way to remove it is through an oral medical treatment.
As an update to the August 5, 2023 riverboat brawl in Montgomery, Alabama on the Alabama River docks, there are now five people who have been charged in the ongoing investigation, where a Black co-captain was attacked by a group of white men.
The co-captain asked them to move their illegally parked pontoon, which was stationed in the spot typically reserved for the Harriott II Riverboat. The captain by loud speaker had already asked them to move several times, circling the river for 40 minutes, hoping the boat owners would follow his request and move their boat.
Meanwhile, the offenders who turned themselves in last week include: Mary Todd, 21, Richard Roberts, 48, Allen Todd, 23, and Zachery Shipman, 25. Also, the Black man, Reggie Ray, 42, wielding the chair at a few white offenders after exiting the riverboat due to racial slurs and threats of violence hurled his way before exiting the boat, has turned himself into the Montgomery law enforcement. One of the workers on the riverboat claimed the group of white men called him the n-word and threatened to use a gun. According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, a woman named Crystal Warren, who was working on the riverboat, said one of the white men who attacked the Black worker yelled, "Fk that n**r" before coming down the dock to fight him. Over $300,000 has been raised online for Ray's case.
However, the memes keep coming, as many Black people are identifying the incident as racially motivated; videos posted to online social media pages are depicting wielding-chair scenes, a Black history lesson on folding chairs and memes relating the Underground Railroad, historical figure, Harriet Tubman.

A Florida law that took effect on July 1, 2023, restricts how educators in the state’s public colleges and universities can teach about the racial oppression that African Americans have faced in the United States.
Specifically, SB 266 forbids professors to teach that systemic racism is “inherent in the institutions of the United States.” Similarly, they cannot teach that it was designed “to maintain social, political and economic inequities.”
The Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument became the country’s 425th national park July 25, on the 82nd anniversary of Till’s birth, as President Joe Biden established the park through proclamation during a White House ceremony. However, the pains of this racial crime still run deep because the known killers of the teenage Black youth were never charged.
"Insisting on an open caset [sic] — casket for her murdered and, I might add, maimed and mutilated son. Fourteen years old. Fourteen years old. She said, “Let the people see what I’ve seen.” “Let the people see what I have seen," said President Biden during an emotional speech before signing the proclmation.
"My God, all of us who have lost children in other ways, how hard it is even to close the casket or keep it open or to — what a debate it is."

Emmett Till was an African American teenager who grew up in Chicago and had relatives in the Mississippi Delta. At 14, he visited Mississippi on vacation in August 1955. He was kidnapped, tortured and killed by white men after being accused of whistling at and making sexual advances toward a white woman.
His mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, was an active member of the Chicago community with an especially close relationship with her son and who became a civil rights icon after his death. She quickly sought justice for her child, demanding his casket be transported home and unsealed, and then insisting his mangled corpse be shown to the world.
Till-Mobley devoted the rest of her life to seeking justice for her son, speaking publicly on issues of racism, educating children and comforting other grieving families. Her long journey was filled with setbacks, but her determination and resilience saw her through. She died in 2003.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced felony charges against 16 Michigan, Republican, resident voters, ranging from ages 55 to 82 for their role in the alleged false electors scheme following the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
According to CNN, some of the GOP electors in Michigan were local activists who were recruited to serve as “fake electors,” all while inaccurately believing there was still a chance that then-President Donald Trump might secure a second consecutive term. Others were well-connected GOP operatives. The group of 16 fake electors includes current and former state GOP officials, a Republican National Committee member, a sitting mayor, a school board member and Trump supporters who were the plaintiffs in a frivolous lawsuit that tried to overturn the 2020 results.

Black homeownership threatened by modern redlining tactics by banks
When President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Federal Housing Administration (F.H.A.), created to assist homeownership for US citizens by providing federal-loan guarantees to prospective buyers, before the 1968 Fair housing Act, Black Americans were intentionally kept out of this housing governmental assistance for decades.
The 1968 Act expanded on previous acts and prohibited discrimination concerning the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, religion, national origin, sex, (and as amended) handicap and family status. Title VIII of the Act is also known as the Fair Housing Act (of 1968).
This Act held high hopes to help integrate communities into diverse background and ethnicities, allowing the equity of quality living throughout all neighborhoods. Of course, flaws in this utopia-thinking continue to this day.

The drug overdose news headlines, the highway billboards, and the local law enforcement warnings regarding the opioid epidemic may not be alarming enough to alert most Americans that they could be next -- accidentally.
What may be alarming to some people is that most of these accidental overdose deaths are caused by a key deadly drug that has been synthesized in the streets and disguised under the predominant, fake pills sold to the unknown drug user, who thinks he/she/they is buying the fake prescription medication.
According to the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), federal organization in charge of enforcing the controlled substances laws of the United States, fentanyl is a highly addictive man-made, synthetic opioid that is 50 times stronger than heroin and 80-100 times stronger than morphine. Just two milligrams of fentanyl, small enough to fit on the tip of a pencil, is considered a potentially deadly dose.
Pharmaceutical fentanyl was developed for pain management treatment of cancer patients, applied in a patch on the skin. Because of its powerful opioid properties, fentanyl is also diverted for abuse.
Fentanyl is added to heroin to increase its potency, or be disguised as highly potent heroin.

Episode 1 of "Brewing Within" tells the dramatic story of the state of California as it entered the pandemic. From fear, to lack of information to misinformation, approximately 39 million residents were about to impacted by the virus in one way or another.

On Black Headline News as an ode to National Hip-Hop History Month, Black News Link explores the beginnings of hip-hop in two 75-minute parts one and two: Hip-hop is a subculture and an art movement that emerged from the Bronx in New York City during the early 1970s. Its development reflected the negative effects of post-industrial decline, political discourse, and a rapidly changing economy.
Looking back to New York City during this era, we see an economic collapse. The city’s economy was falling apart due to the decline of the manufacturing industry and construction of the Cross Bronx Expressway. Much of the white middle class moved to the suburbs to escape the social and economic challenges. The migration shifted demographics and segregated communities. Conditions worsened in neighborhoods prominently populated by African-Americans, Puerto Ricans, and Caribbean immigrants. Urban despair also brought rising crime, gang violence, and poverty.

In Michigan, Rina Risper addresses the concern of distasteful election campaigns thrown at Black publishers who are struggling and need the money. Risper described her personal experience and what she had to do with one stubborn client refusing to change the content of an offensive election advertisement.
Risper also reflects on the awkward statements from Michigan Secretary of State candidate, Krisina Karamo, a 37 year-old, single parent who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, and believes that the "elites drink blood and sell baby body parts after abortions."
Finally, Risper also discusses the eerie similarity of looks between the current incumbent Michigan governor, Gretchen Whitmer and her opponent, Tudor Dixon who has changed her appearance to look like Gov. Whitmer.

Community advocates from California, Ohio and Texas share the root causes of homelessness in communities
In this Black Headline News Live episode, news anchor, Julia Dudley Najieb, reviews the solutions a few cities and counties across the nations are using to decrease homelessness dramatically in this Part 2: Homelessness, replicating solutions that have been proven to work broadcast.
From an Ethnic Media Services briefing last month, Dudley Najieb featured the success stories of these almost "functional zero" homelessness communities. Community advocates, Ana Rausch and Catherine Villarreal, located in Harris County Texas, and Matthew Lewis of YIMBY out of Berkeley, Calif., both spoke about how the historical causes of homelessness and its direct link to the Black population who is homeless in disproportionate numbers.
It's been a national crisis for decades: as of 2020. homelessness has had a crippling effect on the lives of over 580,400 people in the Unites States without a place to call home, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The 2020 Annual Homeless Assessment Report Part 1 to Congress stated that there was 2.2 percent increase in homelessness from 2019.

On July 23, the World Health Organization (WHO) director-general, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, declared the escalating global monkeypox outbreak a "Public Health Emergency of International Concern" (PHEIC). Now, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary (HHS) Xavier Becerra announced today that he will declare the ongoing spread of monkeypox virus in the United States a Public Health Emergency (PHE).

Three known survivors of the massacre testified before a congressional committee considering reparations for survivors and descendants of the massacre on May 19.
